Versatile Transfer of an Ultralong and Seamless Nanowire Array Crystallized at High Temperature for Use in High-Performance Flexible Devices

Flexible Bioinspired Healable Antibacterial Electronics for Intelligent Human-Machine Interaction Sensing

Flexible electronic sensors are receiving numerous research interests for their potential in electronic skins (e-skins), wearable human-machine interfacing, and smart diagnostic healthcare sensing. However, the preparation of multifunctional flexible electronics with high sensitivity, broad sensing range, fast response, efficient healability, and reliable antibacterial capability is still a substantial challenge. Herein, bioinspired by the highly sensitive human skin microstructure (protective epidermis/spinous sensing structure/nerve conduction network), a skin bionic multifunctional electronics is prepared by face-to-face assembly of a newly prepared healable, recyclable, and antibacterial polyurethane elastomer matrix with conductive MXene nanosheets-coated microdome array after ingenious templating method as protective epidermis layer/sensing layer, and an interdigitated electrode as signal transmission layer. The polyurethane elastomer matrix functionalized with triple dynamic bonds (reversible hydrogen bonds, oxime carbamate bonds, and copper (II) ion coordination bonds) is newly prepared, demonstrating excellent healability with highly healing efficiency, robust recyclability, and reliable antibacterial capability, as well as good biocompatibility. Benefiting from the superior mechanical performance of the polyurethane elastomer matrix and the unique skin bionic microstructure of the sensor, the as-assembled flexible electronics exhibit admirable sensing performances featuring ultrahigh sensitivity (up to 1573.05 kPa-1 ), broad sensing range (up to 325 kPa), good reproducibility, the fast response time (≈4 ms), and low detection limit (≈0.98 Pa) in diagnostic human healthcare monitoring, excellent healability, and reliable antibacterial performance.

Illuminating Recent Progress in Nanotransfer Printing: Core Principles, Emerging Applications, and Future Perspectives

As the demand for diverse nanostructures in physical/chemical devices continues to rise, the development of nanotransfer printing (nTP) technology is receiving significant attention due to its exceptional throughput and ease of use. Over the past decade, researchers have attempted to enhance the diversity of materials and substrates used in transfer processes as well as to improve the resolution, reliability, and scalability of nTP. Recent research on nTP has made continuous progress, particularly using the control of the interfacial adhesion force between the donor mold, target material, and receiver substrate, and numerous practical nTP methods with niche applications have been demonstrated. This review article offers a comprehensive analysis of the chronological advancements in nTP technology and categorizes recent strategies targeted for high-yield and versatile printing based on controlling the relative adhesion force depending on interfacial layers. In detail, the advantages and challenges of various nTP approaches are discussed based on their working mechanisms, and several promising solutions to improve morphological/material diversity are presented. Furthermore, this review provides a summary of potential applications of nanostructured devices, along with perspectives on the outlook and remaining challenges, which are expected to facilitate the continued progress of nTP technology and to inspire future innovations.

Aramid Nanodielectrics for Ultraconformal Transparent Electronic Skins

On-skin electronics require minimal thicknesses and decent transparency for conformal contact, imperceptible wearing, and visual aesthetics. It is challenging to search for advanced ultrathin dielectrics capable of supporting the active components while maintaining bending softness, easy handling, and wafer-scale processability. Here, self-delaminated aramid nanodielectrics (ANDs) are demonstrated, enabling any skin-like electronics easily exfoliated from the processing substrates after complicated nanofabrication. In addition, ANDs are mechanically strong, chemically and thermally stable, transparent and breathable, therefore are ideal substrates for soft electronics. As demonstrated, compliant epidermal electrodes comprising silver nanowires and ANDs can successfully record high-quality electromyogram signals with low motion artifacts and satisfying sweat and water resistance. Furthermore, ANDs can serve as both substrates and dielectrics in single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (FETs) with a merely 160-nm thickness, which can be operated within 4 V with on/off ratios of 1.4 ± 0.5 × 105 , mobilities of 39.9 ± 2.2 cm2 V-1 s-1 , and negligible hysteresis. The ultraconformal FETs can function properly when wrapped around human hair without any degradation in performance.

Narrower Nanoribbon Biosensors Fabricated by Chemical Lift-off Lithography Show Higher Sensitivity

Wafer-scale nanoribbon field-effect transistor (FET) biosensors fabricated by straightforward top-down processes are demonstrated as sensing platforms with high sensitivity to a broad range of biological targets. Nanoribbons with 350 nm widths (700 nm pitch) were patterned by chemical lift-off lithography using high-throughput, low-cost commercial digital versatile disks (DVDs) as masters. Lift-off lithography was also used to pattern ribbons with 2 μm or 20 μm widths (4 or 40 μm pitches, respectively) using masters fabricated by photolithography. For all widths, highly aligned, quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ribbon arrays were produced over centimeter length scales by sputtering to deposit 20 nm thin-film In₂O₃ as the semiconductor. Compared to 20 μm wide microribbons, FET sensors with 350 nm wide nanoribbons showed higher sensitivity to pH over a broad range (pH 5 to 10). Nanoribbon FETs functionalized with a serotonin-specific aptamer demonstrated larger responses to equimolar serotonin in high ionic strength buffer than those of microribbon FETs. Field-effect transistors with 350 nm wide nanoribbons functionalized with single-stranded DNA showed greater sensitivity to detecting complementary DNA hybridization vs 20 μm microribbon FETs. In all, we illustrate facile fabrication and use of large-area, uniform In₂O₃ nanoribbon FETs for ion, small-molecule, and oligonucleotide detection where higher surface-to-volume ratios translate to better detection sensitivities.

Geometrically Structured Nanomaterials for Nanosensors, NEMS, and Nanosieves

Recently, geometrically structured nanomaterials have received great attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties, which originate from the geometric variation in such materials. Indeed, the use of various geometrically structured nanomaterials has been actively reported in enhanced-performance devices in a wide range of applications. Recent significant progress in the development of geometrically structured nanomaterials and associated devices is summarized. First, a brief introduction of advanced nanofabrication methods that enable the fabrication of various geometrically structured nanomaterials is given, and then the performance enhancements achieved in devices utilizing these nanomaterials, namely, i) physical and gas nanosensors, ii) nanoelectromechanical devices, and iii) nanosieves are described. For the device applications, a systematic summary of their structures, working mechanisms, fabrication methods, and output performance is provided. Particular focus is given to how device performance can be enhanced through the geometric structures of the nanomaterials. Finally, perspectives on the development of novel nanomaterial structures and associated devices are presented.

Solution Blow Spinning of High-Performance Submicron Polyvinylidene Fluoride Fibres: Computational Fluid Mechanics Modelling and Experimental Results

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate characteristics of high-speed air as it is expelled from a solution blow spinning (SBS) nozzle using a k-ε turbulence model. Air velocity, pressure, temperature, turbulent kinetic energy and density contours were generated and analysed in order to achieve an optimal attenuation force for fibre production. A bespoke convergent nozzle was used to produce polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibres at air pressures between 1 and 5 bar. The nozzle comprised of four parts: a polymer solution syringe holder, an air inlet, an air chamber, and a cap that covers the air chamber. A custom-built SBS setup was used to produce PVDF submicron fibres which were consequently analysed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) for their morphological features. Both theoretical and experimental observations showed that a higher air pressure (4 bar) is more suitable to achieve thin fibres of PVDF. However, fibre diameter increased at 5 bar and intertwined ropes of fibres were also observed.

Self-cleanable, waterproof, transparent, and flexible Ag networks covered by hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene for multi-functional flexible thin film heaters

We demonstrate a self-cleanable, waterproof, highly transparent, and flexible Ag network covered by a very thin transparent polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layer using typical magnetron sputtering for multi-functional flexible thin film heaters used in smart windows. By passivation of the self-assembled Ag network with very thin PTFE films, we fabricated a multi-functional Ag network suitable for flexible thin film heaters. At a PTFE thickness of 10 nm, the Ag network passivated by hydrophobic PTFE layer showed a low sheet resistance of 11.64 Ohm/square, high optical transmittance of 80.20% at a wavelength of 550 nm, and high contact angle of 102.42°. In addition, sputtering of the PTFE layer on the Ag network improved the mechanical flexibility and reliability of the Ag network electrode. The flexible and transparent thin film heater (TTFH) with Ag network electrode covered by PTFE layer showed a saturation temperature of 120 °C at low voltage of 4.5 V and power of 2.45 W, as well as a hydrophobic surface suited for self-cleaning smart windows. These multi-functional performances of TTFH indicate that the Ag network/PTFE film-based flexible TTFH could be used as self-cleanable, waterproof TTFHs for curved smart windows in smart buildings and automobiles.

Single-Nanowire Fuse for Ionization Gas Detection

Local electric field enhancement is crucial to detect gases for an ionization gas sensor. Nanowires grown collectively along the identical lattice orientation have been claimed to show a strong tip effect in many previous studies. Herein, we propose a novel ionization gas detector structure by using a single crystalline silicon nanowire as one electrode that is placed above the prepatterned nanotips. A significant improvement of the local electric field in its radical direction was obtained leading to an ultralow operation voltage for gas breakdown. Different from the tip of the nanowire in the reported ionization gas sensors, the gaseous discharge current in this device flows towards the sidewall in the case of a trace amount of gas environment change. Technically, this discharge current brings about a sudden temperature rise followed by a fusion of the silicon nanowire. Such unique fusibility of a single nanowire in this gas detection device suggests a novel architecture that is portable and in-site executable and can be used as an integrated gas environmental monitor.

Recent progress of solution-processed Cu nanowires transparent electrodes and their applications

Research on next-generation transparent electrode (TE) materials to replace expensive and fragile indium tin oxide (ITO) is crucial for future electronics. Copper nanowires (Cu NWs) are considered as one of the most promising alternatives due to their excellent electrical properties and low-cost processing. This review summarizes the recent progress on the synthesis methods of long Cu NWs, and the fabrication techniques and protection measures for Cu NW TEs. Applications of Cu NW TEs in electronics, such as solar cells, touch screens, and light emitting diodes (LEDs), are discussed.

Modulation of surface physics and chemistry in triboelectric energy harvesting technologies

Mechanical energy harvesting technology converting mechanical energy wasted in our surroundings to electrical energy has been regarded as one of the critical technologies for self-powered sensor network and Internet of Things (IoT). Although triboelectric energy harvesters based on contact electrification have attracted considerable attention due to their various advantages compared to other technologies, a further improvement of the output performance is still required for practical applications in next-generation IoT devices. In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out to enhance the output power of triboelectric energy harvesters. The previous research approaches for enhancing the triboelectric charges can be classified into three categories: i) materials type, ii) device structure, and iii) surface modification. In this review article, we focus on various mechanisms and methods through the surface modification beyond the limitations of structural parameters and materials, such as surficial texturing/patterning, functionalization, dielectric engineering, surface charge doping and 2D material processing. This perspective study is a cornerstone for establishing next-generation energy applications consisting of triboelectric energy harvesters from portable devices to power industries.

Dual-Structured Flexible Piezoelectric Film Energy Harvesters for Effectively Integrated Performance

Improvement of energy harvesting performance from flexible thin film-based energy harvesters is essential to accomplish future self-powered electronics and sensor systems. In particular, the integration of harvesting signals should be established as a single device configuration without complicated device connections or expensive methodologies. In this research, we study the dual-film structures of the flexible PZT film energy harvester experimentally and theoretically to propose an effective principle for integrating energy harvesting signals. Laser lift-off (LLO) processes are used for fabrication because this is known as the most efficient technology for flexible high-performance energy harvesters. We develop two different device structures using the multistep LLO: a stacked structure and a double-faced (bimorph) structure. Although both structures are well demonstrated without serious material degradation, the stacked structure is not efficient for energy harvesting due to the ineffectively applied strain to the piezoelectric film in bending. This phenomenon stems from differences in position of mechanical neutral planes, which is investigated by finite element analysis and calculation. Finally, effectively integrated performance is achieved by a bimorph dual-film-structured flexible energy harvester. Our study will foster the development of various structures in flexible energy harvesters towards self-powered sensor applications with high efficiency.

A Fully Integrated Wireless Flexible Ammonia Sensor Fabricated by Soft Nano-Lithography

Flexible ammonia (NH₃) sensors based on one-dimensional nanostructures have attracted great attention due to their high flexibility and low power consumption. However, it is still challenging to reliably and cost-effectively fabricate ordered nanostructure-based flexible sensors. Herein, a smartphone-enabled fully integrated system based on a flexible nanowire sensor was developed for real-time NH₃ monitoring. Highly aligned, sub-100 nm nanowires on a flexible substrate fabricated by facile and low-cost soft lithography were used as sensitive elements to produce impedance response. The detection signals were sent to a smartphone and displayed on the screen in real time. This nanowire-based sensor exhibited robust flexibility and mechanical durability. Moreover, the integrated NH₃ sensing system presented enhanced performance with a detection limit of 100 ppb, as well as high selectivity and reproducibility. The power consumption of the flexible nanowire sensor was as low as 3 μW. By using this system, measurements were carried out to obtain reliable information about the spoilage of foods. This smartphone-enabled integrated system based on a flexible nanowire sensor provided a portable and efficient way to detect NH₃ in daily life.

Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Ultrathin Flexible Electronic Systems via Capillary-Assisted Electrochemical Delamination

Electronic systems on ultrathin polymer films are generally processed with rigid supporting substrates during fabrication, followed by delamination and transfer to the targeted working areas. The challenge associated with an efficient and innocuous delamination operation is one of the major hurdles toward high-performance ultrathin flexible electronics at large scale. Herein, a facile, rapid, damage-free approach is reported for detachment of wafer-scale ultrathin electronic foils from Si wafers by capillary-assisted electrochemical delamination (CAED). Anodic etching and capillary action drive an electrolyte solution to penetrate and split the polymer/Si interface, leading to complete peel-off of the electronic foil with a 100% success rate. The delamination speed can be controlled by the applied voltage and salt concentration, reaching a maximum value of 1.66 mm s^-1 at 20 V using 2 m NaCl solution. Such a process incurs neither mechanical damage nor chemical contamination; therefore, the delaminated electronic systems remain intact, as demonstrated by high-performance carbon nanotube (CNT)-based thin-film transistors and integrated circuits constructed on a 5.5 cm × 5.0 cm parylene-based film with 4 µm thickness. Furthermore, the CAED strategy can be applied for prevalent polymer films and confers great flexibility and capability for designing and manufacturing diverse ultrathin electronic systems.

Biomimetic Porifera Skeletal Structure of Lead-Free Piezocomposite Energy Harvesters

The elastic composite-based piezoelectric energy-harvesting technology is highly desired to enable a wide range of device applications, including self-powered wearable electronics, robotic skins, and biomedical devices. Recently developed piezoelectric composites are based on inorganic piezoelectric fillers and polymeric soft matrix to take advantages of both components. However, there are still limitations such as weak stress transfer to piezoelectric elements and poor dispersion of fillers in matrix. In this report, a highly enhanced piezocomposite energy harvester (PCEH) is developed using a three-dimensional electroceramic skeleton by mimicking and reproducing the sea porifera architecture. This new mechanically reinforced PCEH is demonstrated to resolve the problems of previous reported conventional piezocomposites and in turn induces stronger piezoelectric energy-harvesting responses. The generated voltage, current density, and instantaneous power density of the biomimetic PCEH device reach up to ∼16 times higher power output than that of conventional randomly dispersed particle-based PCEH. This work broadens further developments of the high-output elastic piezocomposite energy harvesting and sensor application with biomimetic architecture.

Material-Independent Nanotransfer onto a Flexible Substrate Using Mechanical-Interlocking Structure

Nanowire-transfer technology has received much attention thanks to its capability to fabricate high-performance flexible nanodevices with high simplicity and throughput. However, it is still challenging to extend the conventional nanowire-transfer method to the fabrication of a wide range of devices since a chemical-adhesion-based nanowire-transfer mechanism is complex and time-consuming, hindering successful transfer of diverse nanowires made of various materials. Here, we introduce a material-independent mechanical-interlocking-based nanowire-transfer (MINT) method, fabricating ultralong and fully aligned nanowires on a large flexible substrate (2.5 × 2 cm²) in a highly robust manner. For the material-independent nanotransfer, we developed a mechanics-based nanotransfer method, which employs a dry-removable amorphous carbon (a-C) sacrificial layer between a vacuum-deposited nanowire and the underlying master mold. The controlled etching of the sacrificial layer enables the formation of a mechanical-interlocking structure under the nanowire, facilitating peeling off of the nanowire from the master mold robustly and reliably. Using the developed MINT method, we successfully fabricated various metallic and semiconductor nanowire arrays on flexible substrates. We further demonstrated that the developed method is well suited to the reliable fabrication of highly flexible and high-performance nanoelectronic devices. As examples, a fully aligned gold (Au) microheater array exhibited high bending stability (10⁶ cycling) and ultrafast (∼220 ms) heating operation up to ∼100 °C. An ultralong Au heater-embedded cuprous-oxide (Cu₂O) nanowire chemical gas sensor showed significantly improved reversible reaction kinetics toward NO₂ with 10-fold enhancement in sensitivity at 100 °C.

Fabrication of Low-Cost Flexible Superhydrophobic Antibacterial Surface with Dual-Scale Roughness

In this work, we report a large-area fabrication of a flexible superhydrophobic bactericidal surface decorated with copper hydroxide nanowires. This involves a simple two-step method which involves growth followed by transfer of the nanowires onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface by mechanical peeling. Additional roughness in PDMS is obtained through incomplete wetting of the nanoscale gaps which leads to dual-scale roughness and superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 169° and hysteresis of less than 2°. The simplicity of the process makes it low-cost and easily scalable. The process allows fabrication of nonplanar 3D surfaces. The surface shows blood repellence and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli with more than 5 log reductions in bacterial colony. The surface also shows hemocompatible behavior, making it suitable for healthcare applications. The fabricated surface is found to be extremely robust against stretching, twisting, sandpaper abrasion, solid weight impact, and tape peel test. The surface is found to withstand human weight multiple times without losing its hydrophobicity, making it suitable for several practical scenarios in healthcare and household applications.

Nanotransplantation Printing of Crystallographic-Orientation-Controlled Single-Crystalline Nanowire Arrays on Diverse Surfaces

The fabrication of a highly ordered array of single-crystalline nanostructures prepared from solution-phase or vapor-phase synthesis methods is extremely challenging due to multiple difficulties of spatial arrangement and control of crystallographic orientation. Herein, we introduce a nanotransplantation printing (NTPP) technique for the reliable fabrication, transfer, and arrangement of single-crystalline Si nanowires (NWs) on diverse substrates. NTPP entails (1) formation of nanoscale etch mask patterns on conventional low-cost Si via nanotransfer printing, (2) two-step combinatorial plasma etching for defining Si NWs, and (3) detachment and transfer of the NWs onto various receiver substrates using an infiltration-type polymeric transfer medium and a solvent-assisted adhesion switching mechanism. Using this approach, high-quality, highly ordered Si NWs can be formed on almost any type of surface including flexible plastic substrates, biological surfaces, and deep-trench structures. Moreover, NTPP provides controllability of the crystallographic orientation of NWs, which is confirmed by the successful generation of (100)- and (110)-oriented Si NWs with different properties. The outstanding electrical properties of the NWs were confirmed by fabricating and characterizing Schottky junction field-effect transistors. Furthermore, exploiting the highly flexible nature of the NWs, a high-performance piezoresistive strain sensor, with a high gauge factor over 200 was realized.
