Molecular engineering of octupolar NLO molecules and materials based on bipyridyl metal complexes

Theoretically designed M@diaza[2.2.2]cryptand complexes: the role of non-covalent interactions in promoting NLO properties of organic electrides

Organic excess electron compounds with significant nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are widely employed in optoelectronic applications. Herein, single-alkali metals with diaza[2.2.2] cryptand (M@crypt,M=Li, Na, and K) are investigated for optoelectronic and NLO properties by using the density functional theory. Thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of present complexes are computed through interaction energy (Eint) and ab-initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. M@crypt complexes carry excess electrons and mimic molecular electrides. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis and reduced density gradient (RDG) spectra demonstrate the roles of the weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions between metal and complexant. The remarkable hyperpolarizability (βo) value up to 1.41 × 106 au may be credited to the presence of loosely bound excess electrons. The hyper Rayleigh scattering hyperpolarizability (βHRS) is recorded up to 1.31 × 106 au for the K@crypt. Furthermore, frequency-dependent first-order and second-order hyperpolarizability is more prominent at the applied frequency of ω = 0.042823 au. The electron localizing function (ELF) and localized orbital locator (LOL) analysis further disclose the nature of interaction between alkali metal and complexant. The TD-DFT method is adopted to get excited state parameters and absorbance properties. An electron density difference map (EDDM) is exploited to evaluate the orbital contributions in excited states. Hence, the studied electride may become a promising candidate for NLO materials. We anticipate that the present work will provide insight into further development of molecular electride for optoelectronic applications.

Exploring nonlinear optical properties in a hybrid dihydrogen phosphate system: an experimental and theoretical approach

CONTEXT

The controlled slow evaporation process conducted at room temperature has produced a novel hybrid material denoted as (2-hydroxyethyl) trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate [2-HDETDHP] (C5H14NO+, H2PO4-), synthesized through the solution growth method. X-ray crystallography analysis reveals a triclinic structure with a filling rate of P and a Z value of 2. This hybrid material displays noteworthy absorption characteristics in the middle and far ultraviolet regions. UV-visible spectroscopy further establishes its transparency in the visible and near-visible ultraviolet domains. FT-IR spectroscopy examines various vibration modes, elucidating their relationships with the functional groups within the structure. Two- and three-dimensional fingerprint maps, coupled with three-dimensional crystal structures through Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, unveil the dominance of O•••H and H•••H interactions in the structure, comprising 49.40% and 50.40%, respectively. Fingerprint plots derived from the Hirshfeld surface assess the percentages of hydrogen bonding interactions, with 80.6% attributed to a fragment patch. The experiment of antimicrobial efficacy of a synthesized product, conducted in triplicate, demonstrated the synthesized product's potential antimicrobial activity.

METHODS

Hirshfeld surfaces are employed to investigate intermolecular hydrogen bonding, specifically within single phosphate groups. The molecular structure of 2-HDETDHP was refined using single-crystal X-ray analysis, while its optical characteristics were examined through UV-visible spectroscopy. FT-IR spectroscopy is employed for the assignment of molecular vibrations of functional groups in the affined structure. Quantum calculations were executed with the GAUSSIAN 09 software package at B3LYP/6-311G level of theory, to optimize the molecular geometries. The antimicrobial efficacy of a synthesized product was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against antibiotic-resistant Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Aspergillus niger, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Microorganisms were cultured on nutrient agar, and inhibition zones were measured after incubation, with streptomycin and amphotericin as positive controls.

Electron transfer-mediated synergistic nonlinear optical response in the Agn@C18 (n = 4-6) complexes: A DFT study on the electronic structures and optical characteristics

Seeking highly efficient and stable non-linear optical (NLO) materials is crucial yet challenging, given their promising applications in laser diodes and photovoltaics. In this study, we employ the excess electron and charge transfer strategies to theoretically design three novel complexes, namely Agn@C18 (n = 4-6), by adsorbing silver clusters onto the cyclo[18]carbon ring (C18). Our aim is to investigate the NLO characteristics of these complexes using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. The results reveal that the adsorption of Ag clusters onto C18 leads to a decrease in excitation energy and an increase in dipole moment and oscillator strengths, thereby significantly enhancing the hyperpolarizability of the complexes. Strikingly, among all these complexes, Ag6@C18 exhibits the highest first hyperpolarizability value of approximately 109496.2620 au calculated at the B3LYP/cc-PVDZ-pp level of theory, which is about 1.3 × 106 times higher than that of pure C18. This finding validates the effectiveness of the proposed strategies in enhancing the NLO response of the species. Moreover, the calculated UV-Vis absorption spectrum demonstrates that the Agn@C18 complexes with excess electrons exhibit absorption at longer wavelengths (ranging from 385 to 731 nm) compared to C18. In addition, the stability, chemical bonding, and charge transfer characteristics of the Agn@C18 (n = 4-6) complexes were also discussed. These findings highlight the potential of these complexes for the development of highly efficient NLO devices.

Geometric, Electronic, and Optoelectronic Properties of Carbon-Based Polynuclear C3O[C(CN)2]2M3 (where M = Li, Na, and K) Clusters: A DFT Study

Carbon-based polynuclear clusters are designed and investigated for geometric, electronic, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Significant binding energies per atom (ranging from -162.4 to -160.0 kcal mol^-1) indicate excellent thermodynamic stabilities of these polynuclear clusters. The frontier molecular orbital (FMOs) analysis indicates excess electron nature of the clusters with low ionization potential, suggesting that they are alkali-like. The decreased energy gaps (E_H-L) with increased alkali metals size revael the improved electrical conductivity (σ). The total density of state (TDOS) study reveals the alkali metals' size-dependent electronic and conductive properties. The significant first and second hyperpolarizabilities are observed up to 5.78 × 10³ and 5.55 × 10⁶ au, respectively. The β_o response shows dependence on the size of alkali metals. Furthermore, the absorption study shows transparency of these clusters in the deep-UV, and absorptions are observed at longer wavelengths (redshifted). The optical gaps from TD-DFT are considerably smaller than those of HOMO-LUMO gaps. The significant scattering hyperpolarizability (β_HRS) value (1.62 × 10⁴) is calculated for the C3 cluster, where octupolar contribution to β_HRS is 92%. The dynamic first hyperpolarizability β(ω) is more pronounced for the EOPE effect at 532 nm, whereas SHG has notable values for second hyperpolarizability γ(ω).

Electrochemically-Switched 2nd Order Non-Linear Optical Response in an Arylimido-Polyoxometalate with High Contrast and Cyclability

Electrochemically switched 2^nd order non-linear optical responses have been demonstrated for the first time in polyoxometalates (POMs), with an arylimido-derivative showing a leading combination of high on/off contrast (94 %), high visible transparency, and cyclability. Spectro-electrochemical and TD-DFT studies indicate that the switch-off results from weakened charge transfer (CT) character of the electronic transitions in the reduced state. This represents the first study of an imido-POM reduced state, and demonstrates the potential of POM hybrids as electrochemically activated molecular switches.

Luminescent 1,10-Phenanthroline β-Diketonate Europium Complexes with Large Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

Substitution of the diglyme ligand of [Eu(hfa)₃(diglyme)] (where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with a simple 1,10-phenanthroline leads to a six-fold increase of the product μβ_EFISH, as measured by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Similarly, [Eu(tta)₃(1,10-phenanthroline)] (where Htta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) is characterized by a large second-order NLO response. Both 1,10-phenanthroline europium complexes have great potential as multifunctional materials for photonics.

Prediction of Large Second Harmonic Generation in the Metal-Oxide/Organic Hybrid Compound CuMoO3(p2c)

Noncentrosymmetric hybrid framework (HF) materials are an important system in discovering new practical second-order nonlinear optical materials. We calculated the second harmonic generation (SHG) response of a noncentrosymmetric (NCS) organic–inorganic HF compound, CuMoO3(p2c) (p2c = pyrazine-2-carboxylate) to find that it exhibits the largest SHG response among all known NCS HF materials with one-dimensional helical chains. Further atom response theory analysis revealed that the metal atoms Cu and Mo contribute much more strongly than do nonmetal atoms in determining the strength of the SHG response, which is a novel example in nonlinear optical materials known to date.

Two-Photon Absorption Cooperative Effects within Multi-Dipolar Ruthenium Complexes: The Decisive Influence of Charge Transfers

One- and two-photon characterizations of a series of hetero- and homoleptic [RuL_3-n(bpy)_n]²⁺ (n = 0, 1, 2) complexes carrying bipyridine π-extended ligands (L), have been carried out. These π-extended D−π−A−A−π−D-type ligands (L), where the electron donor units (D) are based on diphenylamine, carbazolyl, or fluorenyl units, have been designed to modulate the conjugation extension and the donating effect. Density functional theory calculations were performed in order to rationalize the observed spectra. Calculations show that the electronic structure of the π-extended ligands has a pronounced effect on the composition of HOMO and LUMO and on the metallic contribution to frontier MOs, resulting in strikingly different nonlinear properties. This work demonstrates that ILCT transitions are the keystone of one- and two-photon absorption bands in the studied systems and reveals how much MLCT and LLCT charge transfers play a decisive role on the two-photon properties of both hetero- and homoleptic ruthenium complexes through cooperative or suppressive effects.

Computational Discovery of Transition-metal Complexes: From High-throughput Screening to Machine Learning

Transition-metal complexes are attractive targets for the design of catalysts and functional materials. The behavior of the metal-organic bond, while very tunable for achieving target properties, is challenging to predict and necessitates searching a wide and complex space to identify needles in haystacks for target applications. This review will focus on the techniques that make high-throughput search of transition-metal chemical space feasible for the discovery of complexes with desirable properties. The review will cover the development, promise, and limitations of "traditional" computational chemistry (i.e., force field, semiempirical, and density functional theory methods) as it pertains to data generation for inorganic molecular discovery. The review will also discuss the opportunities and limitations in leveraging experimental data sources. We will focus on how advances in statistical modeling, artificial intelligence, multiobjective optimization, and automation accelerate discovery of lead compounds and design rules. The overall objective of this review is to showcase how bringing together advances from diverse areas of computational chemistry and computer science have enabled the rapid uncovering of structure-property relationships in transition-metal chemistry. We aim to highlight how unique considerations in motifs of metal-organic bonding (e.g., variable spin and oxidation state, and bonding strength/nature) set them and their discovery apart from more commonly considered organic molecules. We will also highlight how uncertainty and relative data scarcity in transition-metal chemistry motivate specific developments in machine learning representations, model training, and in computational chemistry. Finally, we will conclude with an outlook of areas of opportunity for the accelerated discovery of transition-metal complexes.

Oxacarbon superalkali C3X3Y3 (X = O, S and Y = Li, Na, K) clusters as excess electron compounds for remarkable static and dynamic NLO response

An intriguing class of excess electron oxacarbon superalkali clusters is explored for nonlinear optical response through density functional theory (DFT) methods at CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p). These superalkali clusters shows noticeable binding energies per atom (E_b) which reveals their thermodynamic stabilities (-86.45 ∼ -119.44 kcal mol^-1). The obtained significant VIPs values also suggest the electronic stability of these clusters. The VIP values range from 2.06 eV to 3.42 eV. These clusters show remarkable electronic properties and their HOMO-LUMO gaps (E_H-L) are significantly reduced. The lowest H-L gap of 0.96 eV is obtained for C₃O₃K₃ while the highest H-L gap of 2.07 eV is calculated for C₃S₃Li₃. The obtained PDOS spectra further provide evidence for the superior electronic properties of these clusters. The clusters show excellent nonlinear optical properties as revealed from remarkable values (1.6 × 10⁶ au) of static first hyperpolarizability. The controlling factors for hyperpolarizability are also explored by using conventional two-level model. The calculated values of β_o are correlated nicely with β_tl. The crucial excitation energy is the key factor in controlling the first hyperpolarizability. In these excess electron clusters, the second hyperpolarizability (γ_o) response increases up to 4.3 × 10⁹ au. Moreover, the calculated scattering hyperpolarizability (β_HRS) values are quite significant in these clusters and the highest value of 1.3 × 10⁶ au is calculated for C₃S₃K₃. Additionally, these clusters also possess larger dynamic nonlinearities. The dynamic second hyperpolarizability with dc-Kerr effect increases up to 1.0 × 10¹¹ au. The remarkable values for refractive index (n₂) also suggest the excellent nonlinearity of these superalkali clusters.

The inspiration and challenge for through-space charge transfer architecture: from thermally activated delayed fluorescence to non-linear optical properties

Organic molecules consisting of electron donor (D) and electron acceptor (A) subunits linked by π-conjugated bridges are promising building blocks for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and non-linear optics (NLO) materials due to their intramolecular charge transfer (CT) processes in response to external stimuli. According to the electron interaction pattern, the CT process in D-π-A architectures can be divided into two categories, through-bond/-space charge transfer (TB/TSCT). To date, research into the TADF properties of TSCT characteristic molecules has since seen significant growth. In fact, TSCT characteristic materials show great advantages in such NLO responses. In this perspective, we first briefly introduced the basic principles of NLO and TADF effects. Successively, we discuss the influence of TBCT and TSCT patterns on NLO and TADF properties, especially for TSCT characteristic. In the final part, we address the diversity and potential advantages of TSCT characteristic molecules as high-performance NLO materials. With these, it is expected that the greater structural flexibility of spatial conjugation can bring more functionality to NLO materials in the future.

Near-infrared dyes for two-photon absorption in the short-wavelength infrared: strategies towards optical power limiting

The recent advances in the field of two-photon absorbing chromophores in the short-wavelength infrared spectral range (SWIR 1100–2500 nm) are summarized, highlighting the development of optical power limiting devices in this spectral range.

Molecular engineering for optical properties of 5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline-based Ru(II) complexes

A series of homo- and heteroleptic Ru(ii) complexes [Ru(phen)3-n(phen-X)n](PF6)2 (n = 0-3, X = CN, epoxy, H, NH2) were prepared and characterized. The influence of electron-withdrawing or electron-releasing substituents of the 1,10-phenanthroline ligands on the photo-physical properties was evaluated. It reveals fundamental interests in the fine tuning of redox potentials and photo-physical characteristics, depending both on the nature of the substitution of the ligand, and on the symmetry of the related homo- or heteroleptic complex. These complexes exhibit linear absorption and two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-sections over a broad range of wavelength (700-900 nm) due to absorption in the intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) bands. These 2PA properties were more particularly investigated in the 700-1000 spectral range for a family of complexes bearing electro-donating ligands (phen-NH2).

Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes with Curcuminoid Ligands as Active Second-Order NLO Chromophores and Building Blocks for SHG Polymeric Films

The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of iridium(III) complexes having two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin as ancillary ligand have been investigated both in solution and as guest in a polymeric organic matrix. In solution, these complexes are characterized by a significant second-order NLO response, as determined by the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) technique, like the related complex with acetylacetonate. Whereas the low second-harmonic generation response of a composite film of [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(acetylacetonate)] in polymethyl methacrylate was not stable and fell down to zero upon turning off the electric field. A good and stable response was obtained with a film based on the iridium(III) complex bearing two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin.

2,2'-Dipyridylamines: more than just sister members of the bipyridine family. Applications and achievements in homogeneous catalysis and photoluminescent materials

2,2'-Dipyridylamines (dpa) and related compounds belong to the family of polydentate nitrogen ligands. More than a century has passed since their first report but new complexes and applications have been emerging in recent years owing to the versatility of dpa-based architectures. This review aims to present and highlight the main achievements attained with dpa-containing metal complexes in the domains of homogeneous catalysis and luminescent materials.

Syntheses and quadratic nonlinear optical properties of 2,7-fluorenylene- and 1,4-phenylene-functionalized o-carboranes

o-Carboranes C-functionalized by (4-substituted-phen-1-yl)ethynyl-1,4-phenyl groups or (2-substituted-fluoren-7-yl)ethynyl-2,7-fluorenyl groups, in which the pendant functionalization is electron-withdrawing nitro or electron-donating diphenylamino groups, have been synthesized and in many cases structurally characterized. Diphenylamino-containing examples coupled via the two π-delocalizable bridges to the electron-accepting o-carborane unit exhibit the greater quadratic optical nonlinearities at 1064 nm (hyper-Rayleigh scattering, ns pulses), the nonlinearities also increasing on proceeding from 1,4-phenylene- to 2,7-fluorenylene-containing bridge. The most NLO-efficient example 2-(n-butyl)-1-(2-((9,9-di(n-butyl)-2-(N,N-diphenylamino)-9H-fluoren-7-yl)ethynyl)-9,9-di(n-butyl)-9H-fluoren-7-yl)-1,2-ortho-carborane, consisting of diphenylamino donor, fluorenyl-containing bridge, o-carborane acceptor, and solubilizing n-butyl units, exhibits large 〈β〉_HRS (230 × 10^-30 esu) and frequency-independent (two-level model) 〈β₀〉 (96 × 10^-30 esu) values. Coupling two (2-((9,9-di(n-butyl)-2-(N,N-diphenylamino)-9H-fluoren-7-yl)ethynyl)-9,9-di(n-butyl)-9H-fluoren-7-yl) units to the 1,2-ortho-carborane core affords a di-C-functionalized compound with enhanced nonlinearities (309 × 10^-30 esu and 129 × 10^-30 esu, respectively).

Novel cyclometallated 5-π-delocalized donor-1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene platinum(ii) complexes with good second-order nonlinear optical properties

For platinum complexes bearing a cyclometallated 5-thiophene-1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene, β_EFISH increases following the order of the LUMO stabilization.

Zinc(II) as a Versatile Template for Efficient Dipolar and Octupolar Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Molecular Materials §

This short review outlines the main results obtained in the field of molecular materials based on zinc coordination compounds for second-order nonlinear optics. It presents an overview of the main classes of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) active complexes bearing monodentate, bidentate, tridentate, or tetradentate π-delocalized ligands such as substituted stilbazoles, bipyridines, phenanthrolines, terpyridines, and Schiff bases. Macrocyclic ligands such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines are not covered. This paper shows how coordination to the Zn(II) center of π-delocalized nitrogen donor ligands produces a significant enhancement of their quadratic hyperpolarizability. Dipolar complexes are mainly presented, but octupolar zinc complexes are also presented. The coverage is mainly focused on NLO properties that are measured at the molecular level, working in solution, by means of the electric field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) or the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) techniques.

Unexpected High Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Activity of Metal Complexes with Three-Branched Hexadentate 2,2'-Bipyridine Ligands

Two hexadentate bipyridine ligands and their Ru^II and Ni^II complexes were prepared. The helical alignment of the three electron-donor-π-bridge-electron-acceptor (d-π-A) single-strands with bundle architecture in cooperation with the metal center can strongly enhance the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The complexation of the novel cage-type hexadentate ligands with a paramagnetic Ni^II -core almost doubles the β_HRS values compared with the corresponding diamagnetic Ru^II complexes. The hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) was performed with a highly sensitive setup for simultaneous discrimination between multi-photon fluorescence and the molecular first hyperpolarizability.

New Styryl Phenanthroline Derivatives as Model D-π-A-π-D Materials for Non-Linear Optics

Four novel push-pull systems combining a central phenanthroline acceptor moiety and two substituted benzene rings, as a part of the conjugated π-system between the donor and the acceptor moieties, have been synthetized through a straightforward and efficient one-step procedure. The chromophores display high fluorescence and a peculiar fluorosolvatochromic behaviour. Ultrafast investigation by means of state-of-the-art femtosecond-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopies allowed the role of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states to be evidenced, also revealing the crucial role played by both, the polarity and proticity of the medium on the excited state dynamics of the chromophores. The ICT processes, responsible for the solvatochromism, also lead to interesting non-linear optical (NLO) properties: namely great two photon absorption cross-sections (hundreds of GM), investigated by the Two Photon Excited Fluorescence (TPEF) technique, and large second order hyperpolarizability coefficients, estimated through a convenient solvatochromic method.

Strategic design of thiophene-fused nickel dithiolene derivatives for efficient NLO response

The zwitterionic donor–acceptor group significantly reduces the HOMO–LUMO energy gap resulting in an enormous increase in the first hyperpolarizability values.

Theoretical investigation on second-order nonlinear optical properties of ruthenium alkynyl-dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene complexes

Ru metal acetylide electron donor-acceptor complexes have important applications in the field of nonlinear optics. Herein, in this work, a series of half-sandwich ruthenium-based Cp*(dpe)Ru ([Ru*]) metal complexes with the dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene (DHA/VHF) have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the position of the [Ru*] acetylide functionality, either para or meta on the phenylene ring to the DHA/VHF core (1c/1o and 2c/2o), and additional a p-phenylene spacer (3c/3o) had a great influence on the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. The systems 1 and 3 can significantly increased second-order NLO responses compared with system 2. It was attributed to the more obvious charge transfer along y-axis, which is from [Ru*] acetylide functionality to DHA, accompanied by a significant decrease of the transition energy according electron density difference maps and time-dependent DFT calculations. The β_vec values of the open-ring complexes were larger than the corresponding closed-ring complexes owing to the smaller HOMO-LUMO gap in the open-ring complexes. It was also because of the smaller BLA values in open-ring complexes, which had stronger π-conjugation. Especially, the change ratio of β_vec value of system 2 was the largest due to the fact that their charge transfers degree varied greatly. In addition, the frequency-dependent NLO properties of the studied complexes were evaluated at 0.0239 a.u. and 0.0340 a.u. The calculation results demonstrated that the magnitude of the frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizability increased with the increasing frequency. We believe that our present work will be beneficial for further theoretical and experimental studies on large second-order NLO responses of metal complexes.

pH-Switchability and Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Monocyclopentadienylruthenium(II)/iron(II) Tetrazoles/Tetrazolates: Synthesis, Characterization, and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

Tetrazole/tetrazolate monocyclopentadienyliron(II) and ruthenium(II) compounds of general formulas [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆]/[(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] were investigated for their pH-switching second-order nonlinear optical (SONLO) properties. Compounds [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] (M = Fe, Ru) and compound [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] were fully characterized by (¹H-, ¹³C-, ³¹P-) NMR, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis, and compounds [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] and [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] were further characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; the synthesis of [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] was unsuccessful. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations were performed using PBE0 and CAM-B3LYP functionals to evaluate the first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) of the tetrazole/tetrazolate complexes and for a detailed analysis of the experimental data. Both functionals predict (i) high first hyperpolarizabilities for the tetrazolate complexes [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)], with β_tot[Ru] ≈ 1.2β_tot[Fe], and (ii) a 3-fold reduction in β_tot[Ru] upon protonation, in complex [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)]⁺, forecasting [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)]/[(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)]⁺ complexes as on/off, pH-switchable SONLO forms.

Ferrocenyl helquats: unusual chiral organometallic nonlinear optical chromophores

Three new dipolar cations have been synthesised, containing ferrocenyl (Fc) electron donor groups attached to helquat (Hq) acceptors. These organometallic Hq derivatives have been characterised as their TfO^- salts by using various techniques including NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies and electrochemical measurements. UV-vis spectra show multiple intense low energy absorptions attributable to intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) excitations. Each compound displays a reversible Fc^+/0 redox process, together with two reversible one-electron reductions of the Hq fragment. Molecular quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering at 1064 nm, and Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic studies on the visible absorption bands. The obtained first hyperpolarizabilities β are moderate, consistent with the relatively short π-conjugation lengths between the Fc and attached pyridinium group. A single-crystal X-ray structure has been solved for one of the complexes as its PF₆^- salt, revealing a centrosymmetric packing in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron]. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations indicate that the lowest energy absorption bands have mainly metal-to-ligand charge-transfer character. The donor orbitals involved in the electronic transitions forming the next lowest energy ICT band also have substantial contributions from the Fe atom. Good agreement between the simulated and experimental UV-vis absorption spectra is achieved by using the PBE0 functional with the 6-311++G(d)/LANL2DZ mixed basis set, and the theoretical β values are reasonably large. Oxidation of the Fc unit is predicted to cause the β_tot value to decrease by more than 80% in one of the complexes.

Synthesis, photophysical properties and in vitro evaluation of a chlorambucil conjugated ruthenium(ii) complex for combined chemo-photodynamic therapy against HeLa cells

A novel bis(porphyrinato) terbium double-decker complex HTb(DADAPor)₂ with the octupolar molecular exhibits the large off-resonant first hyperpolarizability.

Large Hyperpolarizabilities at Telecommunication-Relevant Wavelengths in Donor-Acceptor-Donor Nonlinear Optical Chromophores

Octopolar D₂-symmetric chromophores, based on the MPZnM supermolecular motif in which (porphinato)zinc(II) (PZn) and ruthenium(II) polypyridyl (M) structural units are connected via ethyne linkages, were synthesized. These structures take advantage of electron-rich meso-arylporphyrin or electron-poor meso-(perfluoroalkyl)porphyrin macrocycles, unsubstituted terpyridyl and 4'-pyrrolidinyl-2,2';6',2″-terpyridyl ligands, and modulation of metal(II) polypyridyl-to-(porphinato)zinc connectivity, to probe how electronic and geometric factors impact the measured hyperpolarizability. Transient absorption spectra obtained at early time delays (t_delay < 400 fs) demonstrate fast excited-state relaxation, and formation of a highly polarized T₁ excited state; the T₁ states of these chromophores display expansive, intense T₁ → T _n absorption manifolds that dominate the 800-1200 nm region of the NIR, long (μs) triplet-state lifetimes, and unusually large NIR excited absorptive extinction coefficients [ε(T₁ → T _n ) ∼ 10⁵ M^-1 cm^-1]. Dynamic hyperpolarizability (β_λ) values were determined from hyper-Rayleigh light scattering (HRS) measurements, carried out at multiple incident irradiation wavelengths spanning the 800-1500 nm spectral domain. The measured β_HRS value (4600 ± 1200 × 10^-30 esu) for one of these complexes, RuPZnRu, is the largest yet reported for any chromophore at a 1500 nm irradiation wavelength, highlighting that appropriate engineering of strong electronic coupling between multiple charge-transfer oscillators provides a critical design strategy to realize octopolar NLO chromophores exhibiting large β_HRS values at telecom-relevant wavelengths. Generalized Thomas-Kuhn sum (TKS) rules were utilized to compute the effective excited-state-to-excited-state transition dipole moments from experimental linear-absorption spectra; these data were then utilized to compute hyperpolarizabilities as a function of frequency, that include two- and three-state contributions for both β _zzz and β _xzx tensor components to the RuPZnRu hyperpolarizability spectrum. This analysis predicts that the β _zzz and β _xzx tensor contributions to the RuPZnRu hyperpolarizability spectrum maximize near 1550 nm, in agreement with experimental data. The TKS analysis suggests that relative to analogous dipolar chromophores, octopolar supermolecules will be likely characterized by more intricate dependences of the measured hyperpolarizability upon irradiation wavelength due to the interactions among multiple different β tensor components.

Crystal structure of non-centrosymmetric bis-(4-meth-oxy-benzyl-ammonium) tetra-chlorido-zincate

The structure of the title non-centrosymmetric organic-inorganic hybrid salt, (C8H12NO)2[ZnCl4], consists of two 4-meth-oxy-benzyl-ammonium cations sandwiched between anionic layers, formed by isolated tetra-chlorido-zincate tetra-hedra. The double layers extend parallel to the ac plane. The crystal packing is assured by Coulombic inter-actions and by a complex N-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯Cl hydrogen-bonding system mostly involving the positively charged ammonium groups and the chloride ligands of the isolated tetra-hedral [ZnCl4](2-) units. One of the methyl-ene-ammonium groups is disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.48 (2):0.52 (2) ratio. The crystal investigated was twinned by non-merohedry with a twin component ratio of 0.738 (2):0.262 (2).

A new TPE-based tetrapodal ligand and its Ln(iii) complexes: multi-stimuli responsive AIE (aggregation-induced emission)/ILCT(intraligand charge transfer)-bifunctional photoluminescence and NIR emission sensitization

A tetrapodal zwitterionic-type ligand featuring both AIE (aggregation-induced emission) and ILCT (intraligand charge transfer) properties, namely 1,1',1'',1'''-(4,4',4'',4'''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzene-4,1-diyl))tetrakis(methylene)tetrapyridin-4(1H)-one (TPE-4PO) has been designed and applied to the assembly of lanthanide complexes LIFM-21(Ln) (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy). Apart from sensitization of NIR emission of Sm(3+) and Dy(3+), the resulting ligand and lanthanide complexes show both AIE and ILCT-related photoluminescence behaviors. The photo-response of this system to different aggregation states, solvents' polarity and mechanical grinding was demonstrated by distinguishable emission intensities and colours.

Synthesis and Electrochemical and Photophysical Characterization of New 4,4'-π-Conjugated 2,2'-Bipyridines that are End-Capped with Cyanoacrylic Acid/Ester Groups

Two new functionalized 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines that were end-capped with cyanoacrylic acid or cyanoacrylic acid ester anchoring groups, which might allow their efficient functionalization on TiO2 or other metal-oxide semiconductor surfaces, have been synthesized and characterized by electrochemical, photophysical, and spectroscopic measurements. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of these 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines with extended π systems, in particular their LUMO energies, make them promising candidates to build up inorganic-organic hybrid photosensitizers for the sensitization of metal-oxide semiconductors (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticles and/or nanotubes).
