From Simple Probe to Smart Composites: Water-Soluble Pincer Complex With Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Luminescent Behaviors

Water-soluble smart materials with multi-stimuli-responsiveness and ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have garnered broad attention. Herein, a water-soluble terpyridine zinc complex (MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc), featuring a simple donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure is presented, which responds to a variety of stimuli, including changes in solvents, pH, temperature, and the addition of amino acids. Notably, MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc functions as a fluorescence probe, capable of visually and selectively discriminating aspartate or histidine among other common amino acids in water. Additionally, when incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form the composite MeO-Tpy-Zn-OAc@PVA, the material exhibits reversible writing, photochromism, and a prolonged RTP with a 14 s afterglow. These unique properties enable the composite to be utilized in potential applications such as secure data encryption and inkless printing.

A Highly Efficient Supramolecular Polymer-Based Singlet Oxygen Generator for Photocatalytic Minisci Alkylation

Supramolecular polymers, with their specific functional units and structures, can effectively enhance the absorption and utilization of light energy, thereby facilitating more efficient photocatalytic organic reactions. In the present work, we constructed a supramolecular polymer consisting of benzothiazole derivatives (BTBP) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The BTBP monomer, known for its unique chemical structure and properties, has been found to exhibit a remarkable capability in generating singlet oxygen (1O2). As a result of the constraining impact of the macrocyclic molecule, the inclusion of CB[8] resulted in an effective enhancement in the ability to generate 1O2 while forming supramolecular polymer BTBP-CB[8]. When evaluating the quantum yield of 1O2 using Rose Bengal (RB) as a reference photosensitizer (75% in water), BTBP-CB[8] demonstrated an enhanced 1O2 quantum yield compared to BTBP, with an impressive yield of 152.4%, demonstrating that the formation of supramolecular polymer contributes to its ability to generate 1O2. Subsequently, BTBP-CB[8], a highly efficient 1O2 generator, was employed for the photocatalytic Minisci alkylation reaction, resulting in an impressive reaction yield of up to 89%. The supramolecular polymer strategies employed in the construction of photocatalytic systems have exhibited remarkable efficacy in the production of 1O2, underscoring their immense prospects in photocatalysis.

Additive-assisted macroscopic self-assembly and control of the shape of assemblies based on host-guest interaction

In these decades, considerable attention has focused on supramolecular polymers due to their unique structures and properties. More recently, macroscopic supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing interest from not only biologists but also materials scientists inspired by the sophisticated structures and functions of living organisms. Since the functions of supramolecular polymers are strongly dependent on their shape, control of the shape is an important issue in controlling the functions of supramolecular polymers. However, the control of shape in macroscopic supramolecular assemblies has not yet been sufficiently investigated. Previously, we studied the macroscopic self-assembly behavior of super absorbent polymer (SAP) microparticles modified with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and adamantane (Ad) residues (βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles, where x and y are the mol% contents of βCD and Ad residues, respectively). More elongated assemblies were formed at higher y, indicating that the shape of assemblies can be controlled by varying the interaction strength. The noteworthy is that 1-adamantanamine hydrochloride (AdNH3Cl) assisted the formation of assemblies from βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles, indicating that AdNH3Cl acts as a chemical stimulus for macroscopic assemblies of βCD(x)-SAP and Ad(y)-SAP microparticles. In this study, we have thus studied the assembling behavior of βCD(x)-SAP microparticles with Ad(y)-SAP microparticles and unmodified SAP microparticles assisted by AdNH3Cl, as well as the shape of the resulting macroscopic assemblies. AdNH3Cl assisted the formation of assemblies from βCD(16.2)-SAP and Ad(15.1)-SAP microparticles, in which AdNH3Cl crosslinked the SAP microparticles through the formation of inclusion complexes of βCD residues with the Ad residue and the electrostatic interaction of ammonium and carboxylate residues. Assemblies of βCD(26.7)-SAP and unmodified SAP microparticles were formed at the concentrations of AdNH3Cl ([AdNH3Cl]0) higher than a certain level (ca. 0.05 mM). The aspect ratio (a/b) of assemblies showed a maximum at [AdNH3Cl]0 ~ 0.10 mM, indicating that the chemical stimulus, i.e., addition of AdNH3Cl, controls the shape of assemblies formed from βCD(26.7)-SAP and unmodified SAP microparticles. This study suggests that other stimuli, e.g., heat, pH, light, redox, and force, can be utilized to control the shape of macroscopic assemblies based on supramolecular interactions.

Photoactivated room temperature phosphorescence from lignin

Sustainable photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials exhibit great potential but are difficult to obtain. Here, we develop photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials by covalently attaching lignin to polylactic acid, where lignin and polylactic acid are the chromophore and matrix, respectively. Initially the phosphorescence of the lignin is quenched by residual O2. However, the phosphorescence is switched on when the residual oxygen is consumed by the triplet excitons of lignin under continuous UV light irradiation. As such, the lifetime increases from 3.0 ms to 221.1 ms after 20 s of UV activation. Interestingly, the phosphorescence is quenched again after being kept under an atmosphere of air for 2 h in the absence of UV irradiation due to the diffusion of oxygen into the materials. Using these properties, as-developed material is successfully used as a smart anti-counterfeiting logo for a medicine bottle and for information recording.

Intercage Polymerization of Postfunctionalized Phosphine Organic Prisms into Cage-Based Assemblies with Tunable Morphologies

Great effort has been dedicated to the engineering of porous organic cages (POCs) in geometry and topology. Yet, harnessing these cage-like entities as premade building units to construct infinite cage-based superstructures remains elusive. In this study, we design a type of vertex-modified phosphine organic prism by a postfunctionalized approach and use it as a ditopic cage monomer to achieve an intercage supramolecular polymerization via the synergy of metal coordination and π-π dimerization. The resulting cage-by-cage polymers can further hierarchically organize into superstructures of diverse morphologies and dimensionalities, including 1D fibers, 2D lamellae, and 3D vesicles. Control over the cosolvents is capable of well regulating their structural hierarchies and self-assembled shapes. This would pave a way for the creation of cage-based supramolecular assemblies and nanomaterials.

Hydrogen-Bonding-Regulated Morphology Control and the Impact on the Antibacterial Activity of Cationic π-Amphiphiles

This manuscript describes the synthesis, self-assembly, and antibacterial properties of naphthalene-diimide (NDI)-derived cationic π-amphiphiles. Three such asymmetric NDI derivatives with a nonionic hydrophilic wedge and a guanidine group in the two opposite sides of the NDI chromophore were considered. They differ by a single functional group (hydrazide, amide, and ester for NDI-1, NDI-2, and NDI-3, respectively), located in the linker between the NDI and the hydrophilic wedge. For NDI-1, the H-bonding among the hydrazides regulated unilateral stacking and a preferential direction of curvature of the resulting supramolecular polymer, producing an unsymmetric polymersome with the guanidinium groups displayed at the outer surface. NDI-3, lacking any H-bonding group, exhibits π-stacking without any preferential orientation and generates spherical particles with a relatively poor display of the guanidium groups. In sharp contrast to NDI-1, NDI-2 exhibits an entangled one-dimensional (1D) fibrillar morphology, indicating the prominent role of the H-bonding motif of the amide group and flexibility of the linker. The antibacterial activity of these assemblies was probed against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative). NDI-1 showed the most promising antibacterial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ∼7.8 μg/mL against S. aureus and moderate activity (MIC ∼ 125 μg/mL) against E. coli. In sharp contrast, NDI-3 did not show any significant activity against the bacteria, suggesting a strong impact of the H-bonding-regulated directional assembly. NDI-2, forming a fibrillar network, showed moderate activity against S. aureus and negligible activity against E. coli, highlighting a significant impact of the morphology. All of these three molecules were found to be compatible with mammalian cells from the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and hemolysis assay. The mechanistic investigation by membrane polarization assay, live/dead fluorescence assay, and microscopy studies confirmed the membrane disruption mechanism of cell killing for the lead candidate NDI-1.

Host-Guest Chemistry in Binary and Ternary Complexes Utilizing π-Conjugated Carbon Nanorings

The carbon nanorings, possessing a radial π system, have garnered significant attention primarily due to their size-dependent photophysical properties and the presence of a unique curved π-conjugated cavity. This is evidenced by the rapid proliferation of publications. Furthermore, the integration of building blocks into CPP skeletons can confer [n]CPPs with novel and exceptional photophysical and electronic characteristics, as well as chiral properties and host-guest interactions, thereby augmenting the diversity of [n]CPPs. Notably, the curved π surface structures and concave cavity of carbon nanorings enable them to host aromatic or non-aromatic guests with a complementarily curved surface, resulting in interesting binary or ternary complexes. This review provides a comprehensive treatment of literature reports on binary and ternary complexes, focusing on both their host-guest interactions and properties. It is important to note that the scope of this review is limited to host-guest chemistry in binary and ternary complexes based on π-conjugated carbon nanorings.

Photoresponsive Biomimetic Functions by Light-Driven Molecular Motors in Three Dimensionally Printed Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Despite the fascinating developments in design and synthesis of artificial molecular machines operating at the nanoscales, translating molecular motion along multiple length scales and inducing mechanical motion of a three-dimensional macroscopic entity remains an important challenge. The key to addressing this amplification of motion relies on the effective organization of molecular machines in a well-defined environment. By taking advantage of long-range orientational order and hierarchical structures of liquid crystals and unidirectional rotation of light-driven molecular motors, we report here photoresponsive biomimetic functions of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) by the repetitive unidirectional rotation of molecular motors using 3D printing. Molecular motors were built in the main chain of liquid crystals oligomers to serve as photoactuators. The oligomers were then used as the ink, and liquid crystal elastomers with different morphologies were printed. The obtained LCEs are able to conduct multiple types of motions including bending, helical coiling, closing of petals, and flipping of wings of a butterfly upon UV illumination, which paves the way for future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex actuating functions.

Mechanically Adaptive Polymers Constructed from Dynamic Coordination Equilibria

Designing materials capable of adapting their mechanical properties in response to external stimuli is the key to preventing failure and extending their service life. However, existing mechanically adaptive polymers are hindered by limitations such as inadequate load-bearing capacity, difficulty in achieving reversible changes, high cost, and a lack of multiple responsiveness. Herein, we address these challenges using dynamic coordination bonds. A new type of mechanically adaptive material with both rate- and temperature-responsiveness was developed. Owing to the stimuli-responsiveness of the coordination equilibria, the prepared polymers, PBMBD-Fe and PBMBD-Co, exhibit mechanically adaptive properties, including temperature-sensitive strength modulation and rate-dependent impact hardening. Benefitting from the dynamic nature of the coordination bonds, the polymers exhibited impressive energy dissipation, damping capacity (loss factors of 1.15 and 2.09 at 1.0 Hz), self-healing, and 3D printing abilities, offering durable and customizable impact resistance and protective performance. The development of impact-resistant materials with comprehensive properties has potential applications in the sustainable and intelligent protection fields.

Photo-responsive functional materials based on light-driven molecular motors

In the past two decades, the research and development of light-triggered molecular machines have mainly focused on developing molecular devices at the nanoscale. A key scientific issue in the field is how to amplify the controlled motion of molecules at the nanoscale along multiple length scales, such as the mesoscopic or the macroscopic scale, or in a more practical perspective, how to convert molecular motion into changes of properties of a macroscopic material. Light-driven molecular motors are able to perform repetitive unidirectional rotation upon irradiation, which offers unique opportunities for responsive macroscopic systems. With several reviews that focus on the design, synthesis and operation of the motors at the nanoscale, photo-responsive macroscopic materials based on light-driven molecular motors have not been comprehensively summarized. In the present review, we first discuss the strategy of confining absolute molecular rotation into relative rotation by grafting motors on surfaces. Secondly, examples of self-assemble motors in supramolecular polymers with high internal order are illustrated. Moreover, we will focus on building of motors in a covalently linked system such as polymeric gels and polymeric liquid crystals to generate complex responsive functions. Finally, a perspective toward future developments and opportunities is given. This review helps us getting a more and more clear picture and understanding on how complex movement can be programmed in light-responsive systems and how man-made adaptive materials can be invented, which can serve as an important guideline for further design of complex and advanced responsive materials.

Light-regulated morphology control in supramolecular polymers

Stimuli-responsive materials have gained significant recent interest owing to their versatility and wide applications in fields ranging from materials science to biology. In the majority of examples, external stimuli, including light, act as a remote source of energy to depolymerize/deconstruct certain nanostructures or provide energy for exploring their functional features. However, there is little emphasis on the creation and precise control of these materials. Although significant progress has been made in the last few decades in understanding the pros and cons of various directional non-covalent interactions and their specific molecular recognition ability, it is only in the recent past that the focus has shifted toward controlling the dimension, dispersity, and other macroscopic properties of supramolecular assemblies. Control over the morphology of supramolecular polymers is extremely crucial not only for material properties they manifest but also for effective interactions with biological systems for their potential application in the field of biomedicine. This could effectively be achieved using photoirradiation which has been demonstrated by some recent reports. The concept as such offers a broad scope for designing versatile stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials with precise structure-property control. However, there has not yet been a compilation that focuses on the present subject of employing light to impact and regulate the morphology of supramolecular polymers or categorize the functional motif for easy understanding. In this review, we have collated recent examples of how light irradiation can tune the morphology and nanostructures of supramolecular polymers and categorized them based on their chemical transformation such as cis-trans isomerization, cycloaddition, and photo-cleavage. We have also established a direct correlation among the structures of the building blocks, mesoscopic properties and functional behavior of such materials and suggested future directions.

Pillararene-Based Supramolecular Polymers for Adsorption and Separation

Supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their perfect combination of supramolecular chemistry and traditional polymer chemistry. The design and synthesis of macrocycles have driven the rapid development of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science. Pillar[n]arenes, a new generation of macrocyclic compounds possessing unique pillar-shaped structures, nano-sized cavities, multi-functionalized groups, and excellent host-guest complexation abilities, are promising candidates to construct supramolecular polymer materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent progress in the design and synthesis of pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) and illustrates their diverse applications as adsorption and separation materials. All performances are evaluated and analyzed in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and recyclability. Typically, PSPs can be categorized into three typical types according to their topologies, including linear, cross-linked, and hybrid structures. The advances made in the area of functional supramolecular polymeric adsorbents formed by new pillararene derivatives are also described in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PSPs for separation-based materials science are discussed. This review will inspire researchers in different fields and stimulate creative designs of supramolecular polymeric materials based on pillararenes and other macrocycles for effective adsorption and separation of a variety of targets.

Simultaneous detection and removal of mercury (II) using multifunctional fluorescent materials

Environmental problems caused by mercury ions are increasing due to growing industrialization, poor enforcement, and inefficient pollutant treatment. Therefore, detecting and removing mercury from the ecological chain is of utmost significance. Currently, a wide range of small molecules and nanomaterials have made remarkable progress in the detection, detoxification, adsorption, and removal of mercury. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in the design and construction of multifunctional materials, detailed their sensing and removing mechanisms, and discussed with emphasis the advantages and disadvantages of different types of sensors. Finally, we elucidated the problems and challenges of current multifunctional materials and further pointed out the direction for the future development of related materials. This review is expected to provide a guideline for researchers to establish a robust strategy for the detection and removal of mercury ionsin the environment.

Supramolecular assembly of dendronized spiropyrans in aqueous solutions into nanospheres with photo- and thermo-responsive chiralities

Tailoring the amphiphilicity of a molecule through external stimuli can alter the balance between self-association and repulsion, resulting in different propensities for its assembly. Here we report on the supramolecular assembly of a series of dendronized spiropyrans (DSPs) in water. These DSPs carry 3-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) with either methoxyl or ethoxyl terminals for different hydrophilicities, and contain an Ala-Gly dipeptide to provide the chirality. These dendronized amphiphiles form supramolecular nanospheres in aqueous solutions with remarkable induced chirality to a level of 1.0 × 106 deg cm2 dmol-1. They can be tuned reversibly through photoisomerization of the spiropyran moieties from the hydrophobic SP form into the hydrophilic MC form, and can even become chirally silent through thermally mediated collapse of the dendritic OEGs. Photoisomerization of the spiropyran moieties in these DSPs is accompanied by simultaneous changes of UV absorption, fluorescence emission, supramolecular chirality and aqueous solution colors. These supramolecular nanospheres exhibit characteristic thermoresponsive behavior due to thermal collapse of the dendritic OEGs with their cloud point temperatures (Tcps) being dependent on the overall hydrophilicity of the molecules and also the aggregate morphologies resulting from how dendritic OEGs are wrapped around the aggregates. Both photo-irradiation-mediated isomerization of the spiropyran moieties and thermally mediated dehydration and collapse of the dendritic OEGs influence the amphiphilicity of these DSPs and their solvation by water, leading to varied driving forces for their assembly. NMR, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, as well as DLS and AFM techniques are combined to follow the supramolecular assembly and illustrate the aggregation mechanism. All experimental results demonstrate that the reversible chirality of the aggregates originates from the balance between dendritic OEGs and spiropyran moieties against water solvation.

NMR exchange dynamics studies of metal-capped cyclodextrins reveal multiple populations of host-guest complexes in solution

Metal-capped molecular hosts are unique in supramolecular chemistry, benefitting from the inner cavity's hydrophobic nature and the metal center's electrochemical properties. It is shown here that the paramagnetic properties of the metals in lanthanide-capped cyclodextrins (Ln-α-CDs and Ln-β-CDs) are a convenient NMR indicator for different populations of host-guest complexes in a given solution. The paramagnetic guest exchange saturation transfer (paraGEST) method was used to study the exchange dynamics in systems composed of Ln-α-CDs or Ln-β-CDs with fluorinated guests, revealing multiple co-existing populations of host-guest complexes exclusively in solutions containing Ln-β-CDs. The enhanced spectral resolution of paraGEST, achieved by a strong pseudo contact shift induction, revealed that different molecular guests can adopt multiple orientations within Ln-β-CDs' cavities and, in contrast, only a single orientation inside Ln-α-CDs. Thus, paraGEST, which can significantly improve NMR detectability and spectral resolution of host-guest systems that experience fast exchange dynamics, is a convenient tool for studying supramolecular systems of metal-capped molecular hosts.

Efficient manipulation of Förster resonance energy transfer through host-guest interaction enables tunable white-light emission and devices in heterotopic bisnanohoops

In this study, we synthesized and reported the heterotopic bisnanohoops P5-[8,10]CPPs containing cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) and a pillar[5]arene unit, which act not only as energy donors but also as a host for binding energy acceptors. We demonstrated that a series of elegant FRET systems could be constructed successfully through self-assembly between donors P5-[8,10]CPPs and acceptors with different emissions via host-guest interaction. These FRET systems further allow us to finely adjust the donors P5-[8,10]CPPs and acceptors (BODIPY-Br and Rh-Br) for achieving multiple color-tunable emissions, particularly white-light emission. More importantly, these host-guest complexes were successfully utilized in the fabrication of white-light fluorescent films and further integrated with a 365 nm LED lamp to create white LED devices. The findings highlight a new application of carbon nanorings in white-light emission materials, beyond the common recognition of π-conjugated molecules.

Triazine pyridinium derivative supramolecular cascade assembly extended FRET for two-photon NIR targeted cell imaging

A triazine pyridinium derivative (TAZpy) was encapsulated into the cavity of a cucurbit[7]uril and further assembled with sulfonatocalix[4]-arene, hyaluronic acid and commercial dyes, which not only achieved fluorescence cascade enhancement and an effective FRET process based on macrocyclic confinement, but was also applied in two-photon NIR targeted cell imaging.

Anion-assisted supramolecular polymerization of luminescent organic π-conjugated chromophores in a moderately polar solvent: tunable nanostructures and their corresponding effects on electronic properties

Supramolecular polymers of π-conjugated organic chromophores have emerged as promising candidates in organic electronics because of their dynamic and highly ordered molecular organization. Herein, we demonstrate the formation of luminescent, highly conducting supramolecular polymers of a functionalized naphthalimide π-chromophore-based organic semiconductor in a moderately polar organic solvent (tetrahydrofuran) by overcoming solute-solvent H-bonding via assistance from fluoride anions. The polymerization is exclusively guided by the synergistic effects of cascade H-bonding (F-⋯H-N- of primary amines, followed by -CO⋯H-N- of amides), π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. An increasing molar equivalent of anions leads to a morphology transition from 1D nanowires to 2D nanosheets via nanotubes and nanorings, but above a particular threshold of the same anion, depolymerization-mediated disruption of long-range order and formation of non-luminescent spherical particles was observed. Such significant impacts of anions in supramolecular polymerization-depolymerization were utilized in modulating the electronic properties of this naphthalimide-based organic semiconductor.

Supramolecular immunotherapy on diversiform immune cells

Supramolecular immunotherapy employs supramolecular materials to stimulate the immune system for inhibiting tumor cell growth and metastasis, reducing the cancer recurrence rate, and improving the quality of the patient's life. Additionally, it can lessen patient suffering and the deterioration of their illness, as well as increase their survival rate. This paper will outline the fundamentals of tumor immunotherapy based on supramolecular materials as well as its current state of development and potential applications. To be more specific, we will first introduce the basic principles of supramolecular immunotherapy, including the processes, advantages and limitations of immunotherapy, the construction of supramolecular material structures, and its benefits in treatment. Second, considering the targeting of supramolecular drugs to immune cells, we comprehensively discuss the unique advantages of applying supramolecular drugs with different types of immune cells in tumor immunotherapy. The current research advances in supramolecular immunotherapy, including laboratory research and clinical applications, are also described in detail. Finally, we reveal the tremendous promise of supramolecular materials in tumor immunotherapy, as well as discuss the opportunities and challenges that may be faced in future development.

Dual-Responsive Supramolecular Chiral Assemblies from Amphiphilic Dendronized Tetraphenylethylenes

Supramolecular assembly of amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions to form stimuli-responsive entities is attractive for developing intelligent supramolecular materials for bioapplications. Here we report on the supramolecular chiral assembly of amphiphilic dendronized tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) in aqueous solutions. Hydrophobic TPE moieties were connected to the hydrophilic three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) through a tripeptide proline-hydroxyproline-glycol (POG) to afford the characteristic topological structural effects of dendritic OEGs and the peptide linker. Both ethoxyl- and methoxyl-terminated dendritic OEGs were used to modulate the overall hydrophilicity of the dendronized TPEs. Their supramolecular aggregates exhibited thermoresponsive behavior that originated from the dehydration and collapse of the dendritic OEGs, and their cloud point temperatures (Tcps) were tailored by solution pH conditions. Furthermore, aggregation-induced fluorescent emission (AIE) from TPE moieties was used as an indicator to follow the assembly, which was reversibly tuned by temperature variation at different pH conditions. Supramolecular assemblies from these dendronized amphiphiles exhibited enhanced supramolecular chirality, which was dominated mainly by the interaction balance between TPE with dendritic OEG and TPE with POG moieties and was modulated through different solvation by changing solution temperature or pH conditions. More interestingly, ethoxyl-terminated dendritic OEG provided a much stronger shielding effect than its methoxyl-terminated counterpart to prevent amino groups within the peptide from protonation, even in strong acidic conditions, resulting in different responsive behavior to the solution temperature and pH conditions for these supramolecular aggregates.

Phototriggered structures: Latest advances in biomedical applications

Non-invasive control of the drug molecules accessibility is a key issue in improving diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Some studies have explored the spatiotemporal control by light as a peripheral stimulus. Phototriggered drug delivery systems (PTDDSs) have received interest in the past decade among biological researchers due to their capability the control drug release. To this end, a wide range of phototrigger molecular structures participated in the DDSs to serve additional efficiency and a high-conversion release of active fragments under light irradiation. Up to now, several categories of PTDDSs have been extended to upgrade the performance of controlled delivery of therapeutic agents based on well-known phototrigger molecular structures like o-nitrobenzyl, coumarinyl, anthracenyl, quinolinyl, o-hydroxycinnamate and hydroxyphenacyl, where either of one endows an exclusive feature and distinct mechanistic approach. This review conveys the design, photochemical properties and essential mechanism of the most important phototriggered structures for the release of single and dual (similar or different) active molecules that have the ability to quickly reason of the large variety of dynamic biological phenomena for biomedical applications like photo-regulated drug release, synergistic outcomes, real-time monitoring, and biocompatibility potential.

Multi-chiral materials comprising metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers containing five axial motifs within a helix

Supramolecular and covalent polymers share multiple structural effects such as communication mechanisms among monomer repeating units, which are related to their axial helical structure. Herein, a unique multi-helical material combining information from both metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers is presented. In this system, the helical structure described by the poly(acetylene) (PA) backbone (cis-cisoidal, cis-transoidal) guides the pendant groups in a fashion where a tilting degree emerges between a pendant and the adjacent ones. As a result, a multi-chiral material is formed comprising four or five axial motifs when the polyene skeleton adopts either a cis-transoidal or cis-cisoidal configuration: the two coaxial helices-internal and external-and the two or three chiral axial motifs described by the bispyridyldichlorido Pt^II complex array. These results show that complex multi-chiral materials can be obtained by polymerizing appropriate monomers that combine both point chirality and the ability to generate chiral supramolecular assemblies.

Engineered Compounds to Control Ice Nucleation and Recrystallization

One of the greatest concerns in the subzero storage of cells, tissues, and organs is the ability to control the nucleation or recrystallization of ice. In nature, evidence of these processes, which aid in sustaining internal temperatures below the physiologic freezing point for extended periods of time, is apparent in freeze-avoidant and freeze-tolerant organisms. After decades of studying these proteins, we now have easily accessible compounds and materials capable of recapitulating the mechanisms seen in nature for biopreser-vation applications. The output from this burgeoning area of research can interact synergistically with other novel developments in the field of cryobiology, making it an opportune time for a review on this topic.

Thermoreversible and tunable supramolecular hydrogels based on chitosan and metal cations

A new thermoreversible and tunable hydrogel CS-M with high water content prepared by metal cation (M = Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺) and chitosan (CS) was reported. The influence of metal cations on the thermosensitive gelation of CS-M systems were studied. All prepared CS-M systems were in the transparent and stable sol state and could become the gel state at gelation temperature (T_g). These systems after gelation could recover to its original sol state at low temperature. CS-Cu hydrogel was mainly investigated and characterized due to its large T_g scale (32-80 °C), appropriate pH range (4.0-4.6) and low Cu²⁺ concentration. The result showed that the T_g range was influenced and could be tuned by adjusting Cu²⁺ concentration and system pH within an appropriate range. The influence of anions (Cl^-, NO3^- and Ac^-) in cupric salts in the CS-Cu system was also investigated. Scale application as heat insulation window was investigated outdoors. The different supramolecular interactions of the -NH₂ group in chitosan at different temperatures were proposed to dominate the thermoreversible process of CS-Cu hydrogel.

Advanced supramolecular design for direct ink writing of soft materials

The exciting advancements in 3D-printing of soft materials are changing the landscape of materials development and fabrication. Among various 3D-printers that are designed for soft materials fabrication, the direct ink writing (DIW) system is particularly attractive for chemists and materials scientists due to the mild fabrication conditions, compatibility with a wide range of organic and inorganic materials, and the ease of multi-materials 3D-printing. Inks for DIW need to possess suitable viscoelastic properties to allow for smooth extrusion and be self-supportive after printing, but molecularly facilitating 3D printability to functional materials remains nontrivial. While supramolecular binding motifs have been increasingly used for 3D-printing, these inks are largely optimized empirically for DIW. Hence, this review aims to establish a clear connection between the molecular understanding of the supramolecularly bound motifs and their viscoelastic properties at bulk. Herein, extrudable (but not self-supportive) and 3D-printable (self-supportive) polymeric materials that utilize noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, host-guest inclusion, metal-ligand coordination, micro-crystallization, and van der Waals interaction, have been discussed in detail. In particular, the rheological distinctions between extrudable and 3D-printable inks have been discussed from a supramolecular design perspective. Examples shown in this review also highlight the exciting macroscale functions amplified from the molecular design. Challenges associated with the hierarchical control and characterization of supramolecularly designed DIW inks are also outlined. The perspective of utilizing supramolecular binding motifs in soft materials DIW printing has been discussed. This review serves to connect researchers across disciplines to develop innovative solutions that connect top-down 3D-printing and bottom-up supramolecular design to accelerate the development of 3D-print soft materials for a sustainable future.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are well-organized assemblies based on highly oriented and reversible noncovalent interactions containing photosensitive molecules as (co-)monomers. They have attracted increasing interest in smart materials and dynamic systems with precisely controllable functions, such as light-driven soft actuators, photoresponsive fluorescent anticounterfeiting and light-triggered electronic devices. The present review discusses light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers with their main photo-induced changes, e.g., geometry, dipole moment, and chirality. Based on these distinct changes, supramolecular polymers formed by light-activated molecules exhibit photoresponsive disassembly and reassembly. As a consequence, photo-induced supramolecular polymerization, "depolymerization," and regulation of the lengths and topologies are observed. Moreover, the light-controlled functions of supramolecular polymers, such as actuation, emission, and chirality transfer along length scales, are highlighted. Furthermore, a perspective on challenges and future opportunities is presented. Besides the challenge of moving from harmful UV light to visible/near IR light avoiding fatigue, and enabling biomedical applications, future opportunities include light-controlled supramolecular actuators with helical motion, light-modulated information transmission, optically recyclable materials, and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems.

Photoresponsive reversible self-assembly of rod-coil amphiphiles containing spiropyran groups

Stimuli-responsive assembly deformation is a key feature in constructing smart soft materials, which makes them versatile and autonomous. In this study, rod-coil amphiphilic compounds containing spiropyran (SP) groups were developed and synthesized to investigate their stimuli-responsive assembly in a solution system with 99% water content. In addition to photochromic phenomena, reversible light-mediated morphological alterations occurred in these molecular aggregates. Based on the different flexible chain segments of rod-coil amphiphiles, the initial assemblies underwent a dissociation-reassembly process under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, whereupon they deformed or disassembled to assemblies. Furthermore, as the UV source was removed, the original nanostructures were gradually recovered again via the ring-closing reaction process. These compounds, interestingly, can selectively combine with copper ions to produce cross-linked co-assembled nanostructures. The copper ion complex solution of rod-coil amphiphilic compounds emitted unique bright blue fluorescence, which allowed for the specific visual identification of copper ions in aqueous solutions.

An in situ protonation-activated supramolecular self-assembly for selective suppression of tumor growth

An in situ supramolecular self-assembly in the subcellular organelles could provide a new strategy to treat diseases. Herein, we report a protonation-activated in situ supramolecular self-assembly system in the lysosomes, which could destabilize the lysosome membrane, resulting in the selective suppression of cancer cells. In this system, pyridyl-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE-Py) was protonated in the lysosomes of A549 lung cancer cells to form octahedron-like structures with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), which impaired the integrity of the lysosome membrane, resulting in selective suppression of cancer cells. Moreover, its anticancer efficiency was also systematically evaluated in vivo, triggering the apoptosis of tumor tissues with ignorable effects on normal organs. Overall, the protonation-activated self-assembly in the lysosomes based on the host-guest complexation would provide a method for novel anti-cancer systems.

An Antitumor Dual-Responsive Host-Guest Supramolecular Polymer Based on Hypoxia-Cleavable Azocalix[4]arene

The exploitation of specific guests which can respond to external stimuli is the main approach for the construction of stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymers (SPs) based on host-guest interactions. Most functional guests, however, fail to manifest stimuli-responses. Herein, a hypoxia-responsive dimeric azocalixarene (D-SAC4A) with outstanding hosting properties was used as the macrocyclic building block for the preparation of host stimuli-responsive SPs. Since azocalixarenes can also be compatible with stimuli-responsive guests, an antitumor drug, camptothecin (CPT), was chosen and linked via a disulfide-containing linker to afford a glutathione (GSH)-responsive ditropic guest (D-CPT). A unique dual-responsive SP was obtained by 1 : 1 mixing of D-SAC4A and D-CPT in water, which further assembled into SP nanoparticles (DSPNs). DSPNs displayed outstanding stability against dilution and biological interferants, as well as precise CPT-release under GSH and hypoxia conditions. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the good biosafety and tumor-suppressive effects of DSPNs.

Construction of self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane by cucurbit[8]uril hydrogel via RTIPS method and host-guest chemistry

In this work, the self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane constructed by host-guest chemistry between cucurbit [8]uril (CB [8] is a family of macrocyclic compounds comprising 8 glycoluril units) and two guest molecules based on reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) method was developed, which had excellent self-healing performance, better mechanical properties, and high permeation flux and BSA rejection rate. The membrane autonomously restored it BSA rejection rate up to about 89% from rejection rate levels as low as 21% after damage. The observed self-healing performance were attributed to the swelling of pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel into the damage position, the molecular interdiffusion of the hydrogel chains, the strong hydrogen bond of the hydrogel chains and the host-guest interaction between CB [8] and two guest molecules (HEC-Np and PVA-MV). SEM morphologies illustrated that the prepared pore-filled membrane via the RTIPS method had homogeneous and porous skin surface and sponge-like cross-section, which imparted the prepared membranes with improved permeability and better mechanical properties. Properties of MR-CB [8] membranes, which varied with increased content of CB [8], were evaluated by permeability, water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties, FRR, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The contact angle water showed that CB [8] hydrogel enhanced the surface hydrophilicity of the prepared membrane. TGA illustrated that the thermal stability improved with the increased content of CB [8]. The optimal pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel membrane (MR-CB [8]₂) exhibited that the pure water flux reached 2100.5 L/m² h, while the BSA rejection rate remained at 86.0%. The results of this work suggested pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel membrane was a more promising way to develop polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes with self-healing performance.

Interface Engineering of Conjugated Polymer-Based Composites for Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis can create a green way to produce clean energy resources, degrade pollutants and achieve carbon neutrality, making the construction of efficient photocatalysts significant in solving environmental issues. Conjugated polymers (CPs) with adjustable band structures have superior light-absorption capacity and flexible morphology that facilitate contact with other components to form advanced heterojunctions. Interface engineering can strengthen the interfacial contact between the components and further enlarge the interfacial contact area, enhance light absorption, accelerate charge transfer and improve the reusability of the composites. In order to throw some new light on heterojunction interface regulation at a molecular level, herein we summarize CP-based composites with improved photocatalytic performance according to the types of interactions (covalent bonding, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, and other polar interactions) between the components and introduce the corresponding interface building methods, identifying techniques. Then the roles of interfaces in different photocatalytic applications are discussed. Finally, we sum up the existing problems in interface engineering of CP-based composites and look forward to the possible solutions.

One-Shot Synthesis of B/N-Doped Calix[4]arene Exhibiting Narrowband Multiple Resonance Fluorescence

A novel macrocycle of B/N-doped calix[4]arene (C-BN) was synthesized by a one-shot double boronation. Owing to the structural tension and electron-donating properties of the nitrogen atoms in the macrocycle, reaction selectively proceeds between the adjacent benzene rings outside the macrocycle. C-BN shows a highly centrosymmetric structure with two multiple resonance (MR) fragments bridged by tertiary amine groups at the 1,3 positions of the benzene ring. Benefiting from the large intermolecular distance (>4.6 Å) between adjacent MR-emitting cores, C-BN also exhibits excellent narrowband emitting features against aggregation-induced quenching and spectrum broadening. Optimized organic light-emitting diode devices based on C-BN exhibit high maximum external quantum efficiencies of 24.7-26.6 % and small full width at half maximums of 25-28 nm over a wide doping range of 1-12 wt %.

2-Hydroxychalcone-β-Cyclodextrin Conjugate with pH-Modulated Photoresponsive Binding Properties

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular receptors are important building blocks for the construction of self-assembled functional materials. We report the design and synthesis of a pH- and light-responsive 2-hydroxychalcone-β-cyclodextrin conjugate (1-Ct) and its characterization by spectroscopic and computational methods. 1-Ct follows the typical reaction network of trans-chalcone-flavylium photoswitches. Upon light irradiation, 1-Ct can be photochemically converted into the cis-chalcone/hemiketal forms (1-Cc/1-B) under neutral pH conditions or to the flavylium cation (1-AH⁺) at acidic pH values. This stimuli-responsive β-cyclodextrin host, 1-Ct, was found to form stronger intramolecular self-inclusion complexes (K_intra = 14) than 1-AH⁺ (K_intra = 3) and weaker than 1-Cc/1-B (overall K_intra = 179), allowing control over their stability and binding properties by combinations of pH and light stimuli.

Tumor-Targeting Polymer–Drug Conjugate for Liver Cancer Treatment In Vitro

Bufalin (buf) has poor solubility in aqueous solution, poor tumor targeting, and many non-specific toxic and side effects. The advantages of high-molecular-weight polymer conjugates are that they can improve the water solubility of buf, prolong plasma half-life, and reduce non-specific toxicity. A novel water-soluble polymer–drug conjugate with buf and fluorescein pendants was prepared by the combination of reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization and click chemistry. Its anticancer performance and cellular uptake behavior against liver cancer were investigated in vitro. The polymer–buf conjugates exhibit controlled release and tumor-targeting capabilities, showing promise for clinical applications.

The Contributions of Supramolecular Kinetics to Dynamics of Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers exhibit well-controlled dynamics with fascinating capacity for remodeling, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness. Supramolecular kinetics of non-covalent bonds is a dominant control handle among the relevant factors to tailor dynamics of supramolecular polymers. This Review focuses on elucidating how supramolecular kinetics dictates the polymer dynamics in supramolecular polymer systems. The ways to tailor supramolecular kinetics are firstly examined as prerequisites for structure-activity study of supramolecular polymers. We next discuss the role of supramolecular kinetics in supramolecular polymers under different polymer architectures by the combination of both of theoretical and experimental studies. Finally, we conclude by discussing the existing challenges and opportunities in the current studies.

Dynamic grafting of carboxylates onto poly(vinyl alcohol) polymers for supramolecularly-crosslinked hydrogel formation

Supramolecular hydrogels have attracted considerable interest due to their unique stimuli-responsive and self-healing properties. However, these hydrogel systems are usually achieved by covalent grafting of supramolecular units onto the polymer backbone, which in turn limits their reprocessability. Herein, we prepared a supramolecular hydrogel system by forming dynamic covalent crosslinks between 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CPBA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The system was then further crosslinked with either calcium ions or branched polyethylenimine (PEI) to generate hydrogels with distinctly different properties. Incorporation of calcium ions resulted in the formation of hydrogels with higher storage modulus of 7290 Pa but without self-healing properties. On the other hand, PEI-crosslinked hydrogel (PVA-CPBA-PEI) exhibited >2000% critical strain value, demonstrated high stability over 52 days and showed sustained antibacterial effect. A combination of supramolecular interactions and dynamic covalent crosslinks can be an alternate strategy to fabricate next generation hydrogel materials.

Multi-Biofunctional Silver-Containing Metallosupramolecular Nanogels for Efficient Antibacterial Treatment and Selective Anticancer Therapy

We develop a simple and efficient route for the fabrication of water-soluble metallosupramolecular polymers. We demonstrate that the introduction of environment-responsive metal-organic complexes within supramolecular polymers endows the resulting self-assembled nano-objects with outstanding antibacterial activity and may significantly improve the efficacy and safety of selective cancer therapy. Herein, we successfully developed a silver-containing supramolecular polymer (Ag-Cy-J) possessing a hydrophilic Jeffamine backbone and highly sensitive pH-responsive cytosine-silver-cytosine (Cy-Ag-Cy) linkages, which spontaneously self-assemble to produce sterically stabilized spherical nanogels in water. The resulting nanogels exhibit several attractive features such as unique fluorescence behavior in water, highly stable self-assembled structures in biological media, significant antihemolytic capability, highly sensitive pH-responsiveness and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against various bacteria strains. Importantly, in vitro cellular assays clearly demonstrated Ag-Cy-J nanogels highly selectively target and induce cytotoxicity in cancer cells, without affecting normal cells. The selective cytotoxic activity in cancer cells is attributed to rapid dissociation of the Cy-Ag-Cy complexes within the nanogels in the cancer cell microenvironment, followed by the intracellular release of silver ions and induction of rapid, massive apoptosis. Overall, the pH-sensitive Cy-Ag-Cy complexes within this supramolecular nanogel system may provide a route to remarkably improve the efficacy of both antibacterial and cancer drug therapies. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : We present a significant breakthrough in the development of a water-soluble silver-containing metallosupramolecular polymer (Ag-Cy-J) that spontaneously self-assembles in water into a spherical nanogel with unique physical characteristics due to the existence of highly sensitive pH-responsive cytosine-silver-cytosine (Cy-Ag-Cy) linkages within the nanogels. Importantly, a series of in vitro antibacterial and anticancer assays demonstrated the Ag-Cy-J nanogels not only exert strong antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains, but also exhibit a high degree of selective uptake and rapidly induce massive apoptosis in cancer cells without harming normal cells. Thus, this newly discovered supramolecular system may potentially provide a multi-biofunctional soft nanomaterial for efficient and safe antibacterial and cancer therapies.

A Supramolecular Hydrogel Based on Copolymers of Acrylic Acid and Maleic Anhydride Derivatives with Terpyridine Motifs

A kind of terpyridine derivative (NH₂-Tpy) in which the amino was incorporated by a short alkyl chain was synthesized. Through grafting of terpyridine units into the hydrophilic copolymers of maleic anhydride and acrylic acid PAAMa via the reaction of the amino groups in NH₂-Tpy and the maleic anhydride units, a series of gelator polymers—P1, P2, and P3—containing different contents of terpyridine units was synthesized. Under coordination of Ni²⁺ and terpyridine ligands in linear polymers, the supramolecular hydrogels H1, H2, and H3 with different cross-linking degrees were prepared. The linear polymers P1–P3 had a strong absorption peak at about 290 nm in the UV-vis spectra which was attributed to π–π* transition, and there was a new peak at about 335 nm led by the metal-to-ligands charge transfer (MLCT) when coordinated with Ni²⁺ ions. According to the rheological behaviors, the storage modulus (G′) was larger than the loss modulus (G′′). These hydrogels showed typical gel-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels exceeded 10%, and the hydrogels showed liquid-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels was less than 7%. The results of the micromorphological investigation of the xerogels from SEM illustrated the metal–terpyridine coordination cross-linking could have an important influence on the microstructures of the resulting hydrogels. Furthermore, these hydrogels based on supramolecular cross-links exhibited reversible solution–gel transition at different environmental temperatures. At the same time, the equilibrium swelling of the supramolecular hydrogels was 8.0–12.3 g/g, which increased with the decrease in the content of the terpyridine units in the resulting hydrogels.

Supramolecular assemblies based on natural small molecules: Union would be effective

Natural products have been used to prevent and treat human diseases for thousands of years, especially the extensive natural small molecules (NSMs) such as terpenoids, steroids and glycosides. A quantity of studies are confined to concern about their chemical structures and pharmacological activities at the monomolecular level, whereas the spontaneous assemblies of them in liquids yielding supramolecular structures have not been clearly understood deeply. Compared to the macromolecules or synthetic small molecular compounds, NSMs have the inherent advantages of lower toxicity, better biocompatibility, biodegradability and biological activity. Self-assembly of single component and multicomponent co-assembly are unique techniques for designing supramolecular entities. Assemblies are of special significance due to their range of applications in the areas of drug delivery systems, pollutants capture, materials synthesis, etc. The assembled mechanism of supramolecular NSMs which are mainly driven by multiple non-covalent interactions are summarized. Furthermore, a new hypothesis aimed to interpret the integration effects of multi-components of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) inspired on the theory of supramolecular assembly is proposed. Generally, this review can enlighten us to achieve the qualitative leap for understanding natural products from monomolecule to supramolecular structures and multi-component interactions, which is valuable for the intensive research and application.

Multicharged cyclodextrin supramolecular assemblies

Multicharged cyclodextrin (CD) supramolecular assemblies, including those based on positively/negatively charged modified mono-6-deoxy-CDs, per-6-deoxy-CDs, and random 2,3,6-deoxy-CDs, as well as parent CDs binding positively/negatively charged guests, have been extensively applied in chemistry, materials science, medicine, biological science, catalysis, and other fields. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advances in positively/negatively charged CDs and parent CDs encapsulating positively/negatively charged guests, especially the construction process of supramolecular assemblies and their applications. Compared with uncharged CDs, multicharged CDs display remarkably high antiviral and antibacterial activity as well as efficient protein fibrosis inhibition. Meanwhile, charged CDs can interact with oppositely charged dyes, drugs, polymers, and biomacromolecules to achieve effective encapsulation and aggregation. Consequently, multicharged CD supramolecular assemblies show great advantages in improving drug-delivery efficiency, the luminescence properties of materials, molecular recognition and imaging, and the toughness of supramolecular hydrogels, in addition to enabling the construction of multistimuli-responsive assemblies. These features are anticipated to not only promote the development of CD-based supramolecular chemistry but also contribute to the rapid exploitation of these assemblies in diverse interdisciplinary applications.
