Selective penetration of fullerenol through pea seed coats mitigates osmosis-repressed germination via chromatin remodeling and transcriptional reprograming

BACKGROUND

The alteration of chromatin accessibility plays an important role in plant responses to abiotic stress. Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNMs) have attracted increasing interest in agriculture due to their potential impact on crop productivity, showcasing effects on plant biological processes at transcriptional levels; however, their impact on chromatin accessibility remains unknown.

RESULTS

This study found that fullerenol can penetrate the seed coat of pea to mitigate the reduction of seed germination caused by osmotic stress. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed that the application of fullerenol caused the high expression of genes related to oxidoreduction to return to a normal level. Assay for transposase accessible chromatin sequencing (ATAC-seq) confirmed that fullerenol application reduced the overall levels of chromatin accessibility of numerous genes, including those related to environmental signaling, transcriptional regulation, and metabolism.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that fullerenol alleviates osmotic stress on various fronts, encompassing antioxidant, transcriptional, and epigenetic levels. This advances knowledge of the working mechanism of this nanomaterial within plant cells. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Light-Powered Directional Ion Transport via PFN-Br/MoS2 Heterogeneous Membranes: Band Alignment and Activation Energy Barrier Engineering

Biological photoresponsive ion transport systems consistently attract researchers' attention owing to their remarkable functions of harvesting energy from nature and participating in visual perception systems. Designing and constructing artificial light-driven ion transport devices to mimic biological counterparts remains a challenge owing to fabrication limitations in nanoconfined spaces. Herein, a typical conjugated polyelectrolyte (PFN-Br) was assembled onto a laminated MoS2M using simple solution-processing vacuum filtration, resulting in a heterogeneous three- and two-dimensional nanoporous membrane. The designed band alignment between PFN-Br and MoS2 enables effective directional ion transport under irradiation in an equilibrium solution, even against a 30-fold concentration gradient. The staggered energy structure of PFN-Br and MoS2 enhances charge separation and establishes a photogenerated potential as the driving force for ion transport. Additionally, the activation energy barrier for ion transport across the heterogeneous membrane decreased by 60% after light irradiation, considerably improving ion transport flux. The easy fabrication and high performance of the membrane in light-powered ion transport provide promising approaches for designing nanofluidic devices with possible applications in energy conversion, light-enhanced biosensing, and photoresponsive ionic devices.

Supramolecular Sequential Light-Harvesting Systems for Constructing White LED Device and Latent Fingerprint Imaging

The fabrication of supramolecular light-harvesting systems (LHS) with sequential energy transfer is of significance in utilizing light energy. In this study, we report the non-covalent self-assembly of a sequential LHS by pillar[5]arene-based host-guest interaction in water and its applications in white light-emitting diode (LED) device and latent fingerprint imaging. The host-guest complex WP5 ⊃ ${ \supset }$ G self-assembles into nanoparticles in water and shows enhanced aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The nanoparticles can be further used to construct sequential LHS with fluorescent dyes 4,7-di(2-thienyl)-benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (DBT) and sulforhodamine 101 (SR101). Impressively, the system shows white-light emission when the molar ratio of WP5 ⊃ ${ \supset }$ G/DBT/SR101 is 1100/2/16. The material can be coated on a LED bulb to achieve white-light emission. In addition, the sequential LHS exhibit multicolor fluorescence including red emission, which have been successfully applied to high-resolution imaging of latent fingerprints. Therefore, we demonstrated a general strategy for the construction of sequential LHS in water based on macrocyclic host-guest interaction and explored its multi-functional applications in white-light LED device and imaging of latent fingerprints, which will promote future development and application of supramolecular LHSs.

XPS Depth-Profiling Studies of Chlorophyll Binding to Poly(cysteine methacrylate) Scaffolds in Pigment-Polymer Antenna Complexes Using a Gas Cluster Ion Source

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth-profiling with an argon gas cluster ion source (GCIS) was used to characterize the spatial distribution of chlorophyll a (Chl) within a poly(cysteine methacrylate) (PCysMA) brush grown by surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from a planar surface. The organization of Chl is controlled by adjusting the brush grafting density and polymerization time. For dense brushes, the C, N, S elemental composition remains constant throughout the 36 nm brush layer until the underlying gold substrate is approached. However, for either reduced density brushes (mean thickness ∼20 nm) or mushrooms grown with reduced grafting densities (mean thickness 6-9 nm), elemental intensities decrease continuously throughout the brush layer, because photoelectrons are less strongly attenuated for such systems. For all brushes, the fraction of positively charged nitrogen atoms (N+/N0) decreases with increasing depth. Chl binding causes a marked reduction in N+/N0 within the brushes and produces a new feature at 398.1 eV in the N1s core-line spectrum assigned to tetrapyrrole ring nitrogen atoms coordinated to Zn2+. For all grafting densities, the N/S atomic ratio remains approximately constant as a function of brush depth, which indicates a uniform distribution of Chl throughout the brush layer. However, a larger fraction of repeat units bound to Chl is observed at lower grafting densities, reflecting a progressive reduction in steric congestion that enables more uniform distribution of the bulky Chl units throughout the brush layer. In summary, XPS depth-profiling using a GCIS is a powerful tool for characterization of these complex materials.

Photosynthetic-Membrane-Like Ion Translocation in Visible-Light-Harvesting Nanofluidic Channels

The selective uphill and downhill movement of protons in and out of photosynthetic membrane enabled by ion pumps and ion channels is key to photosynthesis. Reproducing the functions of photosynthetic membranes in artificial systems has been a persistent goal. Here, a visible-light-harvesting nanofluidic channels is reported which experimentally demonstrates the ion translocation functions of photosynthetic membranes. A molecular junction consisting of photosensitive ruthenium complexes linked to TiO2 electron acceptors forms the reaction centers in the nanofluidic channels. The visible-light-triggered vectorial electron injection into TiO2 establishes a difference in transmembrane potential across the channels, which enables uphill transport of ions against a 5-fold concentration gradient. In addition, the asymmetric charge distribution across the channels enables the unidirectional downhill movement of ions, demonstrating an ion rectification effect with a ratio of 18:1. This work, for the first time, mimics both the uphill and downhill ion translocation functions of photosynthetic membranes, which lays a foundation for nanofluidic energy conversion.

Bridge effect on charge transfer and energy transfer in fullerene-chromophore dyads

Fullerene-chromophore dyads have attracted a great deal of research interest because these complexes can be potentially designed as nanoscale artificial photosynthetic centers, in which the chromophore and fullerene function as the electron donor and acceptor, respectively. The basic operation of this dyad-type artificial reaction center is photoinduced electron transfer from the donor to the acceptor. The fullerene and chromophore are usually covalently linked so that sufficient electronic coupling between these two moieties can facilitate the electron transfer. However, other deactivation pathways for the chromophore excited state, such as energy transfer to the fullerene, may reduce the quantum yield of the photoinduced electron transfer. Here, a series of C60-perylene dyads is exploited to interrogate the effect of the linkage on deactivation mechanisms of the chromophore excited state. For the C60-perylene dyads with a single or double bond bridge, we find that the decay of the singlet state of the chromophore is dominated by the electron transfer, and the corresponding time constant is determined to be 45 ps. On the other hand, for the dyad with a triple bond bridge, the singlet state of the chromophore is quickly quenched through energy transfer to fullerene, and the time constant is as short as 7.9 ps. Our finding suggests that the bond order of the bridge in the fullerene-chromophore dyads can be utilized to control the deactivation pathways of the excited state.

On the fundamentals of quantum rate theory and the long-range electron transport in respiratory chains

It has been shown that both the electron-transfer rate constant of an electrochemical reaction and the conductance quantum are correlated with the concept of quantum capacitance. This simple association between the two separate concepts has an entirely quantum rate basis that encompasses the electron-transfer rate theory as originally proposed by Rudolph A. Marcus whether statistical mechanics is appropriately taken into account. I have prepared a concise review of the quantum mechanical rate theory principles focused on its quantum electrodynamics character to demonstrate that it can reconcile the conflicting views established on attempting to use the super-exchange (supported on electron transfer) or 'metallic-like' (supported on conductance quantum) mechanisms separately to explain the highly efficient long-range electron transport observed in the respiratory processes of living cells. The unresolved issues related to long-range electron transport are clarified in light of the quantum rate theory with a discussion focused on Geobacter sulfurreducens films as a reference standard of the respiration chain. Theoretical analyses supported by experimental data suggest that the efficiency of respiration within a long-range electron transport path is intrinsically a quantum mechanical event that follows relativistic quantum electrodynamics principles as addressed by quantum rate theory.

Efficient Electron Transfer Driven by Excited-State Structural Relaxation in Corrole-Perylenedimiide Dyad

A sterically encumbered trans-A2B-corrole possessing a perylenediimide (PDI) scaffold in close proximity to the macrocycle has been synthesized via a straightforward route. Electronic communication as probed via steady-state absorption or cyclic voltammetry is weak in the ground state, in spite of the corrole ring and PDI being bridged by an o-phenylene unit. The TDDFT excited-state geometry optimization suggests after excitation the interchromophoric distance is markedly reduced, thus enhancing the through-space electronic coupling between the corrole and the PDI. This is corroborated by the strong deviation of the emission spectrum originating from both PDI and corrole in the dyad. Selective excitation of both donor and acceptor units triggers efficient sub-picosecond electron transfer and hole transfer, respectively, followed by fast charge recombination. In comparison to previously studied corrole-PDI dyads, both charge separation and charge recombination occur faster, because of the structural relaxation in the excited state.

All-Atom Photoinduced Charge Transfer Dynamics in Condensed Phase via Multistate Nonlinear-Response Instantaneous Marcus Theory

Photoinduced charge transfer (CT) in the condensed phase is an essential component in solar energy conversion, but it is challenging to simulate such a process on the all-atom level. The traditional Marcus theory has been utilized for obtaining CT rate constants between pairs of electronic states but cannot account for the nonequilibrium effects due to the initial nuclear preparation. The recently proposed instantaneous Marcus theory (IMT) and its nonlinear-response formulation allow for incorporating the nonequilibrium nuclear relaxation to electronic transition between two states after the photoexcitation from the equilibrium ground state and provide the time-dependent rate coefficient. In this work, we extend the nonlinear-response IMT method for treating photoinduced CT among general multiple electronic states and demonstrate it in the organic photovoltaic carotenoid-porphyrin-fullerene triad dissolved in explicit tetrahydrofuran solvent. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations were employed to obtain the time correlation functions of energy gaps, which were used to generate the IMT-required time-dependent averages and variances of the relevant energy gaps. Our calculations show that the multistate IMT could capture the significant nonequilibrium effects due to the initial nuclear state preparation, and this is corroborated by the substantial differences between the population dynamics predicted by the multistate IMT and the Marcus theory, where the Marcus theory underestimates the population transfer. The population dynamics by multistate IMT is also shown to have a better agreement with the all-atom nonadiabatic mapping dynamics than the Marcus theory does. Because the multistate nonlinear-response IMT is straightforward and cost-effective in implementation and accounts for the nonequilibrium nuclear effects, we believe this method offers a practical strategy for studying charge transfer dynamics in complex condensed-phase systems.

Instantaneous Marcus theory for photoinduced charge transfer dynamics in multistate harmonic model systems

Modeling the dynamics of photoinduced charge transfer (CT) in condensed phases presents challenges due to complicated many-body interactions and the quantum nature of electronic transitions. While traditional Marcus theory is a robust method for calculating CT rate constants between electronic states, it cannot account for the nonequilibrium effects arising from the initial nuclear state preparation. In this study, we employ the instantaneous Marcus theory (IMT) to simulate photoinduced CT dynamics. IMT incorporates nonequilibrium structural relaxation following a vertical photoexcitation from the equilibrated ground state, yielding a time-dependent rate coefficient. The multistate harmonic (MSH) model Hamiltonian characterizes an organic photovoltaic carotenoid-porphyrin-fullerene triad dissolved in explicit tetrahydrofuran solvent, constructed by mapping all-atom inputs from molecular dynamics simulations. Our calculations reveal that the electronic population dynamics of the MSH models obtained with IMT agree with the more accurate quantum-mechanical nonequilibrium Fermi's golden rule. This alignment suggests that IMT provides a practical approach to understanding nonadiabatic CT dynamics in condensed-phase systems.

Bioinspired Light-Driven Proton Pump: Engineering Band Alignment of WS2 with PEDOT:PSS and PDINN

Bioinspired two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic systems for photo-induced ion transport have attracted great attention, as they open a new pathway to enabling light-to-ionic energy conversion. However, there is still a great challenge in achieving a satisfactory performance. It is noticed that organic solar cells (OSCs, light-harvesting device based on photovoltaic effect) commonly require hole/electron transport layer materials (TLMs), PEDOT:PSS (PE) and PDINN (PD), respectively, to promote the energy conversion. Inspired by such a strategy, an artificial proton pump by coupling a nanofluidic system with TLMs is proposed, in which the PE- and PD-functionalized tungsten disulfide (WS2) multilayers construct a heterogeneous membrane, realizing an excellent output power of ≈1.13 nW. The proton transport is fine-regulated due to the TLMs-engineered band structure of WS2. Clearly, the incorporating TLMs of OSCs into 2D nanofluidic systems offers a feasible and promising approach for band edge engineering and promoting the light-to-ionic energy conversion.

Why coastal lagoons are so productive? Physical bases of fishing productivity in coastal lagoons

Coastal lagoons are among the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. Annual primary production varies from 50 to > 500 g C m-2 year-1, being of the same order of magnitude as that of the upwelling areas. Many lagoons lie within the range of eutrophic (300-500 g C m-2 year-1) or hypereutrophic (> 500 g C m-2 year-1) conditions. The high productivity of coastal lagoons makes them subject of exploitation by many marine fishes and invertebrates, that use them as nursery areas and feeding grounds during their early life cycle phases, and most lagoons support important fisheries or maintain aquaculture exploitations. The high levels of their biological production can be explained by some of their common features as shallowness and the strong influence of terrestrial systems. Shallowness favors that the photic zone extends to the lagoon bottom and that wind can promote the resuspension of nutrients and organisms. The interaction with land also introduces significant amounts of nutrients. However, trophic variables can explain < 43 % of the fishing yields, and further than the trophic status of the lagoons, several works showed that the biological productivity of coastal lagoons can be explained by their geomorphological features such as the positive influence of shoreline development and the negative influence of depth. Using the Mar Menor lagoon as a case study, we propose that although nutrient inputs and light can be limiting factors for photosynthetic based productivity, increasing fishing yield up to a certain limit, the productivity of lagoons is mainly promoted by more general forces associated to physical and chemical gradients.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bola-Amphiphilic Porphyrin-Perylenebisimide Architectures

We report on the synthesis and characterization of a family of three water-soluble bola-amphiphilic zinc-porphyrin-perylenebisimide triads containing oligo carboxylic-acid capped Newkome dendrons in the periphery. Variations of the perylenebisimide (PBI) core geometry and dendron size (G1 and G2 dendrons with 3- and 9-carboxylic acid groups respectively) allow for tuning the supramolecular aggregation behavior with respect to variation of the molecular architecture. The triads show good solubility in basic aqueous media and aggregation to supramolecular assemblies. Theoretical investigations at the DFT level of theory accompanied by electrochemical measurements unravel the geometric and electronic structure of the amphiphiles. UV/Vis and fluorescence titrations with varying amounts of THF demonstrate disaggregation.

Rare Guest-Induced Electrical Conductivity of Zn-Porphyrin Metallacage Inclusion Complexes Featuring π-Donor/Acceptor/Donor Stacks

Charge-transfer (CT) interactions between co-facially aligned π-donor/acceptor (π-D/A) arrays engender unique optical and electronic properties that could benefit (supra)molecular electronics and energy technologies. Herein, we demonstrate that a tetragonal prismatic metal-organic cage (MOC18+) having two parallel π-donor tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-Zn-porphyrin (ZnTCPP) faces selectively intercalate planar π-acceptor guests, such as hexaazatriphenylene hexacarbonitrile (HATHCN), hexacyanotriphenylene (HCTP), and napthanelediimide (NDI) derivatives, forming 1:1 πA@MOC18+ inclusion complexes featuring supramolecular π-D/A/D triads. The π-acidity of intercalated π-acceptors (HATHCN ≫ HCTP ≈ NDIs) dictated the nature and strength of their interactions with the ZnTCPP faces, which in turn influenced the binding affinities (Ka) and optical and electronic properties of corresponding πA@MOC18+ inclusion complexes. Owing to its strongest CT interaction with ZnTCPP faces, the most π-acidic HATHCN guest enjoyed the largest Ka (5 × 106 M-1), competitively displaced weaker π-acceptors from the MOC18+ cavity, and generated the highest electrical conductivity (2.1 × 10-6 S/m) among the πA@MOC18+ inclusion complexes. This work demonstrates a unique through-space charge transport capability of πA@MOC18+ inclusion complexes featuring supramolecular π-D/A/D triads, which generated tunable electrical conductivity, which is a rare but much coveted electronic property of such supramolecular assemblies that could further expand their utility in future technologies.

Exploiting the photophysical features of DMAN template in ITQ-51 zeotype in the search for FRET energy transfer

The combination between photoactive molecules and inorganic structures is of great interest for the development of advanced materials in the field of optics. Particularly, zeotypes with extra-large pore size are attractive because they allow the encapsulation of bulky dyes. The microporous aluminophoshate Mg-ITQ-51 (IFO-type structure) represents an ideal candidate because of the synergic combination of two crucial features: the IFO framework itself, which is composed of non-interconnected one-dimensional extra-large elliptical channels with a diameter up to 11 Å able to host bulky guest species, and the particular organic structure-directing agent used for the synthesis (1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene, DMAN), which efficiently fills the IFO pores, and is itself a photoactive molecule with interesting fluorescence properties in the blue range of the visible spectrum, thus providing a densely-incorporated donor species for FRET processes. Besides, occlusion of DMAN dye in the framework triggers a notable improvement of its fluorescence properties by confinement effect. To extend the action of the material and to mimic processes such as photosynthesis in which FRET is essential, two robust laser dyes with bulky size, rhodamine 123 and Nile Blue, have been encapsulated for the first time in a zeolitic framework, together with DMAN, in a straightforward one-pot synthesis. Thus, photoactive systems with emission in the entire visible range have been achieved due to a partial FRET between organic chromophores protected in a rigid aluminophosphate matrix.

Oxidation-state sensitive light-induced dynamics of Ruthenium-4H-Imidazole complexes

Oxidized molecular states are key intermediates in photo-induced redox reactions, e. g., intermolecular charge transfer between photosensitizer and catalyst in photoredox catalysis. The stability and longevity of the oxidized photosensitizer is an important factor in optimizing the respective light-driven reaction pathways. In this work the oxidized states of ruthenium(II)-4H-imidazole dyes are studied. The ruthenium complexes constitute benchmark photosensitizers in solar energy interconversion processes with exceptional chemical stability, strong visible light absorption, and favourable redox properties. To rationalize the light-induced reaction in the oxidized ruthenium(III) systems, we combine UV-vis absorption, resonance Raman, and transient absorption spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Three complexes are compared, which vary with respect to their coordination environment, i. e., combining an 4H-imidazole with either 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2,2';6'2"-terpyridine (tpy) coligands, and chloride or isothiocyanate ligands. While all oxidized complexes have similar steady state absorption properties, their excited state kinetics differ significantly; the study thus opens the doorway to study the light-driven reactivity of oxidized molecular intermediates in intermolecular charge transfer cascades.

Photophysical Properties of Homo- and Hetero-Aggregate Assemblies Made of N-Annulated Perylene Derivatives

We report the absorption spectra and photophysical properties of homo and hetero-aggregate assemblies of a strongly emissive N-annulated perylene dye (P) and of a dyad made of P and a methyl viologen derivative (P-MV), in ethanol-water solutions. In homo-aggregate assemblies of P, the π-π* fluorescence of the isolated chromophore is replaced by excimer emission at lower energy, with a lifetime of 900 ps, due to excimer formation from the initially prepared excitons. In homo-aggregate assemblies of P-MV, photoinduced charge separation, with formation of P+ -MV- species, occurs in 3 ps with a charge recombination of 20 ps. In hetero-aggregate P/P-MV systems, the light energy absorbed by the P components delocalizes over various P subunits, and when a P-MV unit is reached, charge separation occurs; however, excimer emission is present for P/P-MV ratio larger than 3 : 1, indicating that delocalized excitons within the hetero-aggregate systems extend over a limited number of P chromophores.

Mass spectrometric monitoring of ligand-bridged hot electron transfer and anaerobic oxidization on auto renewable droplet-based plasmonic nanoreactors under visible light illumination

The light induced hot-electron on plasmonic nanostructures has been recognized as a breakthrough discovery for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. With mass spectrometry, we demonstrate the dynamics of hot electron transfers of anaerobic oxidization reactions on Au decorated TiO2 plasmonic nanoparticles, which were coated on the inner surface of a flask. Those nanoparticles were covered by continuously renewed liquid droplets of solvent and reactants that were transported through a Venturi jet mixer with auto-spray. In addition to intensive mass transfer in such droplet-based nanoreactors, as well as strong adsorption of reactants and rapid desorption of products on materials surfaces, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation upon visible light illumination, by which accumulated energies of plasmons are transferred to electrons in the conduction band of the material, attributes to the efficient photocatalytic transformation. Mass spectrometric detection of intermediate radical anions and negative ions with stable isotope labeling unambiguously identifies that highly energetic hot electrons can escape from the plasmonic nanostructures, be collected by adsorbed molecules, and initiate bond cleavages. It was demonstrated that losses of two H atoms result in the anaerobic oxidization of each benzyl alcohol molecule to a benzyl aldehyde molecule in the absence of molecular oxygen with more than 90 % yields. The well recyclable plasmonic nanoreactors implicate the injection of transferred electrons eventually back to electronically depleted Au+ positive ions. Bridged by adsorbed molecules, electrons were repeatedly circulated back and forth in plasmonic nanoreactors, where the collected light was eventually converted into chemical energy.

The magic of biaryl linkers: the electronic coupling through them defines the propensity for excited-state symmetry breaking in quadrupolar acceptor-donor-acceptor fluorophores

Charge transfer (CT) is key for molecular photonics, governing the optical properties of chromophores comprising electron-rich and electron-deficient components. In photoexcited dyes with an acceptor-donor-acceptor or donor-acceptor-donor architecture, CT breaks their quadrupolar symmetry and yields dipolar structures manifesting pronounced solvatochromism. Herein, we explore the effects of electronic coupling through biaryl linkers on the excited-state symmetry breaking of such hybrid dyes composed of an electron-rich core, i.e., 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole (DHPP), and pyrene substituents that can act as electron acceptors. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that strengthening the donor-acceptor electronic coupling decreases the CT rates and the propensity for symmetry breaking. We ascribe this unexpected result to effects of electronic coupling on the CT thermodynamics, which in its turn affects the CT kinetics. In cases of intermediate electronic coupling, the pyrene-DHPP conjugates produce fluorescence spectra, spreading over the whole visible range, that in addition to the broad CT emission, show bands from the radiative deactivation of the locally excited states of the donor and the acceptors. Because the radiative deactivation of the low-lying CT states is distinctly slow, fluorescence from upper locally excited states emerge leading to the observed anti-Kasha behaviour. As a result, these dyes exhibit white fluorescence. In addition to demonstrating the multifaceted nature of the effects of electronic coupling on CT dynamics, these chromophores can act as broad-band light sources with practical importance for imaging and photonics.

An emissive charge-transfer excited-state at the well-defined hetero-nanostructure interface of an organic conjugated molecule and two-dimensional inorganic nanosheet

Precise engineering of excited-state interactions between an organic conjugated molecule and a two-dimensional semiconducting inorganic nanosheet, specifically the manipulation of charge-transfer excited (CTE) states, still remains a challenge for state-of-the-art photochemistry. Herein, we report a long-lived, highly emissive CTE state at structurally well-defined hetero-nanostructure interfaces of photoactive pyrene and two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets via an N-benzylsuccinimide bridge (Py-Bn-MoS2). Spectroscopic measurements reveal that no charge-transfer state is formed in the ground state, but the locally-excited (LE) state of pyrene in Py-Bn-MoS2 efficiently generates an unusual emissive CTE state. Theoretical studies elucidate the interaction of MoS2 vacant orbitals with the pyrene LE state to form a CTE state that shows a distinct solvent dependence of the emission energy. This is the first example of organic-inorganic 2D hetero-nanostructures displaying mixed luminescence properties by an accurate design of the bridge structure, and therefore represents an important step in their applications for energy conversion and optoelectronic devices and sensors.

Keeping the chromophores crossed: evidence for null exciton splitting

Fundamental understanding of the supramolecular assemblies of organic chromophores and the development of design strategies have seen endless ripples of interest owing to their exciting photophysical properties and optoelectronic applications. The independent discovery of dye aggregates by Jelley and Scheibe was the commencement of the remarkable advancement in the field of aggregate photophysics. Subsequent research warranted an exceptional model for defining the exciton interactions in aggregates, proposed by Davydov, Kasha and co-workers, independently, based on the long-range Coulombic coupling. Fascinatingly, the orthogonally cross-stacked molecular transition dipole arrangement was foretold by Kasha to possess null exciton interaction leading to spectroscopically uncoupled molecular assembly, which lacked an experimental signature for decades. There have been several attempts to identify and probe atypical molecular aggregates for decoding their optical behaviour. Herein, we discuss the recent efforts in experimentally verifying the unusual exciton interactions supported with quantum chemical computations, primarily focusing on the less explored null exciton splitting. Exciton engineering can be realized through synthetic modifications that can additionally offer control over the assorted non-covalent interactions for orchestrating precise supramolecular assembly, along with molecular editing. The task of attaining a minimal excitonic coupling through an orthogonally cross-stacked crystalline architecture envisaged to offer a monomer-like optical behaviour was first reported in 1,7-dibromoperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic tetrabutylester (PTE-Br2). The attempt to stitch molecules covalently in an orthogonal fashion to possess null excitonic character culminated in a spiro-conjugated perylenediimide dimer exhibiting a monomer-like spectroscopic signature. The computational and experimental efforts to map the emergent properties of the cross-stacked architecture are also discussed here. Using the null aggregates formed by the interference effects between CT-mediated and Coulombic couplings in the molecular array is another strategy for achieving monomer-like spectroscopic properties in molecular assemblies. Moreover, identifying supramolecular assemblies with precise angle-dependent properties can have implications in functional material design, and this review can provide insights into the uncharted realm of null exciton splitting.

Preparation of N-doped carbon dots and application to enhanced photosynthesis

Regulation of photosynthesis rates is one of the key ways to increase crop yields. Carbon dots (CDs), which are low-toxity and biocompatible optical nanomaterials, can be easily prepared and are ideal for improving photosynthesis efficiency. In this study, nitrogen-doped CDs (CNDs) with a fluorescent quantum yield of 0.36 were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. These CNDs can convert a part of ultraviolet light in solar energy to blue light (emission peak at 410 nm) that can be utilized in photosynthesis and that overlaps with the optical absorption spectrum of chloroplasts in the blue light zone. Consequently, chloroplasts can pick up photons excited by the CNDs and transfer them to the photosynthetic system in the form of electrons, thereby accelerating the photoelectron transport rate. These behaviors can reduce ultraviolet light stress on wheat seedlings and improve the efficiency of electron capture and transfer from chloroplasts through optical energy conversion. As a result, various photosynthetic indices and biomass of wheat seedlings are improved. Cytotoxicity experiments have showed that CNDs within a certain concentration range almost do not affect cell survival.

Biohybrid Molecule-Based Photocatalysts for Water Splitting Hydrogen Evolution

The problems of resource depletion and environmental pollution caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels greatly restrict the rapid development of human technology and industry, which has led to a high demand for the development of new and clean energy sources. Hydrogen, due to its high calorific value and environmentally friendly combustion products, is undoubtedly a very promising energy carrier. The current methods of industrial hydrogen production are mainly water electrocatalytic decomposition or fossil fuels conversion, which also results in the waste of other energy sources. Since only one-step is involved during the conversion from solar to chemical energy and thus unnecessary energy waste is avoided, solar energy photocatalytic decomposition of water provides a more viable method for hydrogen production. The utilization of biohybrid molecules, which are widely available in nature and environmentally friendly, further reduce the cost of such photocatalytic systems. This Review discusses the research progress on hydrogen production using biohybrid molecules for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The basic reaction mechanism, general types and system structures about biohybrid molecule-based photocatalysts are summarized. The current challenges and prospects in the research of water splitting hydrogen evolution by biohybrid molecules photocatalysts are presented.

Investigation of a bacteriochlorin-containing pentad array for panchromatic light-harvesting and charge separation

A new pentad array designed to exhibit panchromatic absorption and charge separation has been synthesized and characterized. The array is composed of a triad panchromatic absorber (a bis(perylene-monoimide)-porphyrin) to which are appended an electron acceptor (perylene-diimide) and an electron donor/hole acceptor (bacteriochlorin) in a crossbar arrangement. The motivation for incorporation of the bacteriochlorin versus a free-base or zinc chlorin utilized in prior constructs was to facilitate hole transfer to this terminal unit and thereby achieve a higher yield of charge separation across the array. The intense S₀ → S₁ (Q_y) band of the bacteriochlorin also enhances absorption in the near-infrared spectral region. Due to synthetic constraints, a phenylethyne linker was used to join the bacteriochlorin to the core porphyrin of the panchromatic triad rather than the diphenylethyne linker employed for the prior chlorin-containing pentads. Static and time-resolved photophysical studies reveal enhanced excited-state quenching for the pentad in benzonitrile and dimethyl sulfoxide compared to the prior chlorin-containing analogues. Success was only partial, however, as a long-lived charge separated state was not observed despite the improved energetics for the final ground-state hole/electron-shift reaction. The apparent reason is more facile competing charge-recombination due to the shorter bacteriochlorin - porphyrin linker that increases electronic coupling for this process. The studies highlight design criteria for balancing panchromatic absorption and long-lived charge separation in molecular architectures for solar-energy conversion.

Self-assembled systems for artificial photosynthesis

The last few decades have seen an impressive development in molecular-based artificial photosynthesis, thanks to the design of integrated light-harvesting antennae, charge separation systems, and catalysts for water oxidation or hydrogen production based on covalently linked subunits. However, in recent years, self-assembly and spontaneous aggregation of components emerged - sometimes also through serendipity - for the preparation of multicomponent systems aimed to perform the basic processes needed for artificial photosynthesis. Here we critically discuss some key articles that have recently shown the potential of self-assembly for artificial photosynthesis, ranging from self-assembly of antennae and charge separation systems to integrated antenna/catalyst assemblies, to planned co-localization of various components into restricted environments. It is evident that self-assembly can generate emerging properties with respect to the non-aggregated species, and such emerging properties can be quite convenient for designing efficient photocatalytic systems.

Non-Markovianity between Site Pairs in FMO Complex Using Discrete-Time Quantum Jump Model

The Fenna-Mathews-Olson (FMO) complex present in green sulfur bacteria is known to mediate the transfer of excitation energy between light-harvesting chlorosomes and membrane-embedded bacterial reaction centers. Due to the high efficiency of this transport process, it is an extensively studied pigment-protein complex system with the eventual aim of modeling and engineering similar dynamics in other systems and using it for real-time application. Some studies have attributed the enhancement of transport efficiency to wavelike behavior and non-Markovian quantum jumps resulting in long-lived and revival of quantum coherence, respectively. Since dynamics in these systems reside in the quantum-classical regime, quantum simulation of such dynamics will help in exploring the subtle role of quantum features in enhancing the transport efficiency, which has remained unsettled. Discrete simulation of the dynamics in the FMO complex can help in efficient engineering of the heat bath and controlling the environment with the system. In this work, using the discrete quantum jump model we show and quantify the presence of higher non-Markovian memory effects in specific site pairs when internal structures and environmental effects are in favor of faster transport. As a consequence, our study leans toward the connection between non-Markovianity in quantum jumps with the enhancement of transport efficiency.

Fast Charge Separation in Distant Donor-Acceptor Dyads Driven by Relaxation of a Hot Excited State

A series of three perylenemonoimide-p-oligophenylene-dimethylaniline molecular dyads undergo photoinduced charge separation (CS) with anomalous distance dependence as a function of increasing donor-acceptor (DA) distances. A comprehensive experimental and computational investigation of the photodynamics in the donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) chromophores reveals a clear demarcation concerning the nature of the CS accessed at shorter (bridgeless) and longer DA distances. At the shortest distance, a strong DA interaction and ground-state charge delocalization populate a hot excited state (ES) with prominent charge transfer (CT) character, via Franck-Condon vertical excitation. The presence of such a CT-polarized hot ES enables a subpicosecond CS in the bridgeless dyad. The incorporation of the p-oligophenylene bridge effectively decouples the donor and the acceptor units in the ground state and consequentially suppresses the CT polarization in the hot ES. Theoretically, this should render a slower CS at longer distances. However, the transient absorption measurement reveals a fast CS process at the longer distance, contrary to the anticipated exponential distance dependence of the CS rates. A closer look into the excited-state dynamics suggests that the hot ES undergoes ultrafast geometry relaxation (τ < 1 ps) to create a relaxed ES. As compared to a decoupled, twisted geometry in the hot ES, the geometry of the relaxed ES exhibits a more planar conformation of the p-oligophenylene bridges. Planarization of the bridge endorses an increased charge delocalization and a prominent CT character in the relaxed ES and forms the origin for the evident fast CS at the longest distance. Thus, the relaxation of the hot ES and the concomitantly enhanced charge delocalization adds a new caveat to the classic nature of distance-dependent CS in artificial DBA chromophores and recommends a cautious treatment of the attenuation factor (β) while discussing anomalous CS trends.

Fullerene-Perylenediimide (C60-PDI) Based Systems: An Overview and Synthesis of a Versatile Platform for Their Anchor Engineering

An overview of the different covalent bonding synthetic strategies of two electron acceptors leading to fullerene-perylenediimide (C₆₀-PDI)-based systems, essentially dyads and triads, is presented, as well as their more important applications. To go further in the development of such electron and photoactive assemblies, an original aromatic platform 5-benzyloxy-3-formylbenzoic acid was synthesized to graft both the PDI dye and the fullerene C₆₀. This new C₆₀-PDI dyad exhibits a free anchoring phenolic function that could be used to attach a third electro- and photoactive unit to study cascade electron and/or energy transfer processes or to obtain unprecedented side-chain polymers in which the C₆₀-PDI dyads are attached as pendant moieties onto the main polymer chain. This C₆₀-PDI dyad was fully characterized, and cyclic voltammetry showed the concomitant reduction process onto both C₆₀ and PDI moieties at identical potential. A quasi-quantitative quenching of fluorescence was demonstrated in this C₆₀-PDI dyad, and an intramolecular energy transfer was suggested between these two units. After deprotection of the benzyloxy group, the free hydroxyl functional group of the platform was used as an anchor to reach a new side-chain methyl methacrylate-based polymer in which the PDI-C₆₀ dyad units are located as pendants of the main polymer chain. Such polymer which associates two complementary acceptors could find interesting applications in optoelectronics and in particular in organic solar cells.

Molecular-Modified Photocathodes for Applications in Artificial Photosynthesis and Solar-to-Fuel Technologies

Nature offers inspiration for developing technologies that integrate the capture, conversion, and storage of solar energy. In this review article, we highlight principles of natural photosynthesis and artificial photosynthesis, drawing comparisons between solar energy transduction in biology and emerging solar-to-fuel technologies. Key features of the biological approach include use of earth-abundant elements and molecular interfaces for driving photoinduced charge separation reactions that power chemical transformations at global scales. For the artificial systems described in this review, emphasis is placed on advancements involving hybrid photocathodes that power fuel-forming reactions using molecular catalysts interfaced with visible-light-absorbing semiconductors.

Energy transfer dynamics and the mechanism of biohybrid photosynthetic antenna complexes chemically linked with artificial chromophores

A light-harvesting strategy is crucial for the utilisation of solar energy. In this study, we addressed the expanding light-harvesting (LH) wavelength of photosynthetic LH complex 2 (LH2, from Rhodoblastus acidophilus strain 10050) through covalent conjugation with extrinsic chromophores. To further understand the conjugation architecture and mechanism of excitation energy transfer (EET), we examined the effects of the linker length and spectral overlap integral between the emission and absorption spectra of the energy donor and acceptor pigments. In the former case, contrary to the intuition based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) theory, the observed energy transfer rate was similar regardless of the linker length, and the energy transfer efficiency increased with longer linkers. In the latter case, despite the energy transfer rate increases at higher spectral overlaps, it was quantitatively inconsistent with the FRET theory. The mechanism of EET beyond the FRET theory was discussed in terms of the higher-lying exciton state of B850, which mediates efficient EET despite the small spectral overlap. This systematic investigation provides insights for the development of efficient artificial photosynthetic systems.

All-Atom Nonadiabatic Semiclassical Mapping Dynamics for Photoinduced Charge Transfer of Organic Photovoltaic Molecules in Explicit Solvents

Direct all-atom simulation of nonadiabatic dynamics in disordered condensed phases like liquid solutions and amorphous solids has been challenging. The first all-atom simulation of the photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics of a prototypical organic photovoltaic carotenoid-porphyrin-C₆₀ molecular triad in explicit tetrahydrofuran is presented. Based on the Meyer-Miller mapping Hamiltonian, various semiclassical and mixed quantum-classical dynamics are employed, including the linearized semiclassical, symmetrical quasiclassical, mean-field Ehrenfest, classical mapping model, and spin-mapping model approaches. The all-atom nonadiabatic dynamics were compared to multi-state harmonic models with a globally shared bath, and the models built using the ensemble averages on the initial electronic state could reproduce the all-atom results. The solvent effect was found to be critical for the photoinduced charge transfer, and the time-dependent solute-solvent radial distribution functions revealed that only the nonadiabatic dynamics started with the effective forces on the initial electronic state could capture the correct nuclear dynamics. The proposed strategy for modeling condensed-phase nonadiabatic dynamics with atomistic details is readily applied to complex condensed-phase systems.

Cation-Selective Oxide Semiconductor Mesoporous Membranes for Biomimetic Ion Rectification and Light-Powered Ion Pumping

Artificial membranes precisely imitating the biological functions of ion channels and ion pumps have attracted significant attention to explore nanofluidic energy conversion. Herein, inspired by the cyclic ion transport for the photosynthesis in purple bacteria, a bilayer inorganic membrane (TiO₂ /AAO) composed of oxide semiconductor (TiO₂ ) mesopores on anodic alumina (AAO) macropores is we developed. This inorganic membrane achieves the functions of ion channels and ion pumps, including the ion rectification and light-powered ion pumping. The asymmetric charge distribution across the bilayer membrane contributes to the cationic selectivity and ion rectification characteristics. The electrons induced by ultraviolet irradiation introduce a built-in electric field across TiO₂ /AAO membrane, which pumps the active ion transport from a low to a high concentration. This work integrates the functions of biological ion channels and ion pumps within an artificial membrane for the first time, which paves the way to explore multifunctional membranes analogous to its biological counterpart.

Nanoionics from Biological to Artificial Systems: An Alternative Beyond Nanoelectronics

Ion transport under nanoconfined spaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and plays an important role in the energy conversion and signal transduction processes of both biological and artificial systems. Unlike the free diffusion in continuum media, anomalous behaviors of ions are often observed in nanostructured systems, which is governed by the complex interplay between various interfacial interactions. Conventionally, nanoionics mainly refers to the study of ion transport in solid-state nanosystems. In this review, to extent this concept is proposed and a new framework to understand the phenomena, mechanism, methodology, and application associated with ion transport at the nanoscale is put forward. Specifically, here nanoionics is summarized into three categories, i.e., biological, artificial, and hybrid, and discussed the characteristics of each system. Compared with nanoelectronics, nanoionics is an emerging research field with many theoretical and practical challenges. With this forward-looking perspective, it is hoped that nanoionics can attract increasing attention and find wide range of applications as nanoelectronics.

Light-induced electron transfer/phase migration of a redox mediator for photocatalytic C-C coupling in a biphasic solution

Photocatalytic molecular conversions that lead to value-added chemicals are of considerable interest. To achieve highly efficient photocatalytic reactions, it is equally important as it is challenging to construct systems that enable effective charge separation. Here, we demonstrate that the rational construction of a biphasic solution system with a ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc⁺/Fc) redox couple enables efficient photocatalysis by spatial charge separation using the liquid-liquid interface. In a single-phase system, exposure of a 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) solution containing a Ru(II)- or Ir(III)-based photosensitizer, Fc, and benzyl bromide (Bn-Br) to visible-light irradiation failed to generate any product. However, the photolysis in a H₂O/DCE biphasic solution, where the compounds are initially distributed in the DCE phase, facilitated the reductive coupling of Bn-Br to dibenzyl (Bn₂) using Fc as an electron donor. The key result of this study is that Fc⁺, generated by photooxidation of Fc in the DCE phase, migrates to the aqueous phase due to the drastic change in its partition coefficient compared to that of Fc. This liquid-liquid phase migration of the mediator is essential for facilitating the reduction of Bn-Br in the DCE phase as it suppresses backward charge recombination. The co-existence of anions can further modify the driving force of phase migration of Fc⁺ depending on their hydrophilicity; the best photocatalytic activity was obtained with a turnover frequency of 79.5 h^-1 and a quantum efficiency of 0.2% for the formation of Bn₂ by adding NBu₄⁺Br^- to the biphasic solution. This study showcases a potential approach for rectifying electron transfer with suppressed charge recombination to achieve efficient photocatalysis.

Modulation of proton-coupled electron transfer reactions in lysine-containing alpha-helixes: alpha-helixes promoting long-range electron transfer

The proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction plays an important role in promoting many biological and chemical reactions. Usually, the rate of the PCET reaction increases with an increase in the electron transfer distance because long-range electron transfer requires more free energy barriers. Our density functional theory calculations here reveal that the mechanism of PCET occurring in lysine-containing alpha(α)-helixes changes with an increasing number of residues in the α-helical structure and the different conformations because of the modulation of the excess electron distribution by the α-helical structures. The rate constants of the corresponding PCET reactions are independent of or substantially shallower dependent on the electron transfer distances along α-helixes. This counter-intuitive behavior can be attributed to the fact that the formation of larger macro-cylindrical dipole moments in longer helixes can promote electron transfer along the α-helix with a low energy barrier. These findings may be useful to gain insights into long-range electron transfer in proteins and design α-helix-based electronics via the regulation of short-range proton transfer.

Self-Assembled Interwoven Nanohierarchitectures of NaNbO3 and NaNb1-x Ta x O3 (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.20): Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Photocatalytic Applications, and Dielectric Properties

Dependence on fossil fuels for energy purposes leads to the global energy crises due to the nonrenewable nature and high CO₂ production for environmental pollution. Therefore, new ways of nanocatalysis for environmental remediation and sustainable energy resources are being explored. Herein, we report a facile surfactant free, low temperature, and environmentally benign hydrothermal route for development of pure and (5, 10, 15, and 20 mol %) Ta-doped horizontally and vertically interwoven NaNbO₃ nanohierarchitecture photocatalysts. To the best of our knowledge, such a type of hierarchical structure of NaNbO₃ has never been reported before, and changes in the microstructure of these nanoarchitectures on Ta-doping has also been examined for the first time. As-synthesized nanostructures were characterized by different techniques including X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopic studies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies, etc. Ta-doping considerably affects the microstructure of the nanohierarchitectures of NaNbO₃, which was analyzed by FESEM analysis. The UV-visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy study shows considerable change in the band gap of as-synthesized nanostructures and was found to be ranging from 2.8 to 3.5 eV in pure and different mole % Ta-doped NaNbO₃. With an increase in dopant concentration, the surface area increases and was equal to 5.8, 6.8, 7.0, 9.2, and 9.7 m²/g for pure and 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol % Ta-doped NaNbO₃, respectively. Photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of methylene blue dye and H₂ evolution reaction shows the highest activity (89% dye removal and 21.4 mmol g^-1 catalyst H₂ evolution) for the 10 mol % NaNbO₃ nanostructure which was attributed to a change in the conduction band maximum of the material. At 100 °C and 500 kHz, the dielectric constants of pure and 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol % Ta-doped NaNbO₃ were found to be 111, 510, 491, 488, and 187, respectively. The current study provides the rational insight into the design of nanohierarchitectures and how microstructure affects different properties of the material upon doping.

Achieving Symmetry-Breaking Charge Separation in Perylenediimide Trimers: The Effect of Bridge Resonance

Symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) provides a very promising option to engineer a novel light conversion scheme, while it is still a challenge to realize SB-CS in a nonpolar environment. The strength of electronic coupling plays a crucial role in determining the exciton dynamics of organic semiconductors. Herein, we describe how to mediate interchromophore coupling to achieve SB-CS in a nonpolar solvent by the use of two perylenediimide (PDI)-based trimers, 1,7-tri-PDI and 1,6-tri-PDI. Although functionalization at the N-atom decreases electronic coupling between PDI units, our strategy takes advantage of "bridge resonance", in which the frontier orbital energies are nearly degenerate with those of the covalently linked PDI units, leading to enhanced interchromophore electronic coupling. Tunable electronic coupling was realized by the judicious combination of "bridge resonance" with N-functionalization. The enhanced mixing between the S₁ state and CT/CS states results in direct observation of the CT band in the steady-state UV-vis absorption and negative free energy of charge separation (ΔG_CS) in both chloroform and toluene for the two trimers. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrated that photoinduced SB-CS in a nonpolar solvent is feasible. This work highlights that the use of "bridge resonance" is an effective way to control exciton dynamics of organic semiconductors.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer in Organized Assemblies—Case Studies

In this review, photoinduced electron transfer processes in specifically designed assembled architectures have been discussed in the light of recent results reported from our laboratories. A convenient and useful way to study these systems is described to understand the rules that drive a light-induced charge-separated states and its subsequent decay to the ground state, also with the aim of offering a tutorial for young researchers. Assembled systems of covalent or supramolecular nature have been presented, and some functional multicomponent systems for the conversion of light energy into chemical energy have been discussed.

Light-Powered Ion Pumping in a Cation-Selective Conducting Polymer Membrane

The simulation of the ion pumping against a proton gradient energized by light in photosynthesis is of significant importance for the energy conversion in a non-biological environment. Herein, we report light-powered ion pumping in a polystyrene sulfonate anion (PSS) doped polypyrrole (PPy) conducting polymer membrane (PSS-PPy) with a symmetric geometry. This PSS-PPy conducting polymer membrane exhibits a cationic selectivity and a light-responsive surface-charge-governed ion transport attributed to the negatively charged PSS groups. An asymmetric visible irradiation on one side of the PSS-PPy membrane induces a built-in electric field across the membrane due to the intrinsic photoelectronic property of PPy, which drives the cationic transport against the concentration gradient, demonstrating an ion-pumping effect. This work is a prototype that uses a geometry-symmetric conducting polymer membrane as a light-powered artificial ion pump for active ion transport, which exhibits potential applications in nanofluidic energy conversion.

Biomimetic Nanochannels: From Fabrication Principles to Theoretical Insights

Biological nanochannels which can regulate ionic transport across cell membranes intelligently play a significant role in physiological functions. Inspired by these nanochannels, numerous artificial nanochannels have been developed during recent years. The exploration of smart solid-state nanochannels can lay a solid foundation, not only for fundamental studies of biological systems but also practical applications in various fields. The basic fabrication principles, functional materials, and diverse applications based on artificial nanochannels are summarized in this review. In addition, theoretical insights into transport mechanisms and structure-function relationships are discussed. Meanwhile, it is believed that improvements will be made via computer-guided strategy in designing more efficient devices with upgrading accuracy. Finally, some remaining challenges and perspectives for developments in both novel conceptions and technology of this inspiring research field are stated.

Light-Controlled Ionic/Molecular Transport through Solid-State Nanopores and Nanochannels

Biological nanochannels perfectly operate in organisms and exquisitely control mass transmembrane transport for complex life process. Inspired by biological nanochannels, plenty of intelligent artificial solid-state nanopores and nanochannels are constructed based on various materials and methods with the development of nanotechnology. Specially, the light-controlled nanopores/nanochannels have attracted much attention due to the unique advantages in terms of that ion and molecular transport can be regulated remotely, spatially and temporally. According to the structure and function of biological ion channels, light-controlled solid-state nanopores/nanochannels can be divided into light-regulated ion channels with ion gating and ion rectification functions, and light-driven ion pumps with active ion transport property. In this review, we present a systematic overview of light-controlled ion channels and ion pumps according to the photo-responsive components in the system. Then, the related applications of solid-state nanopores/nanochannels for molecular sensing, water purification and energy conversion are discussed. Finally, a brief conclusion and short outlook are offered for future development of the nanopore/nanochannel field.

Visible-light-driven C(sp2)-H arylation of phenols with arylbromides enabled by electron donor-acceptor excitation

We have developed a catalyst-free visible-light-driven C(sp²)-H arylation of unprotected phenols with arylbromides to give 2-arylated phenols. This reaction proceeds through the excitation of an electron donor-acceptor complex between a phenolate and an arylbromide, electron transfer, and debrominative C(sp²)-C(sp²) coupling.
