Deconstructing the Crystal Structures of Metal–Organic Frameworks and Related Materials into Their Underlying Nets

Highly Stable MOF-Type Lead Halide Luminescent Ferroelectrics

Lead halide molecular ferroelectrics represent an important class of luminescent ferroelectrics, distinguished by their high chemical and structural tunability, excellent processability and distinctive luminescent characteristics. However, their inherent instability, prone to decomposition upon exposure to moisture and light, hinders their broader ferroelectric applications. Herein, for the first time, we present a series of isoreticular metal-organic framework (MOF)-type lead halide luminescent ferroelectrics, demonstrating exceptional robustness under ambient conditions for at least 15 months and even when subjected to aqueous boiling conditions. Unlike conventional metal-oxo secondary building units (SBUs) in MOFs adopting highly centrosymmetric structure with limited structural distortion, our lead halide-based MOFs occupy structurally deformable [Pb2X]+ (X=Cl-/Br-/I-) SBUs that facilitate a c-axis-biased displacement of Pb2+ centers and substantially contribute to thermoinducible structural transformation. Importantly, this class of MOF-type lead halide ferroelectrics undergo ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transitions with remarkably high Curie temperature of up to 505 K, superior to most of molecular ferroelectrics. Moreover, the covalent bonding between phosphorescent organic component and the light-harvesting inorganic component achieves efficient spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing, resulting in long-lived afterglow emission. The compelling combination of high stability, ferroelectricity and afterglow emission exhibited by lead halide MOFs opens up many potential opportunities in energy-conversion applications.

Single-Atom based Metal-Organic Framework Photocatalysts for Solar-Fuel Generation

The growing demand for fossil fuels and subsequent CO2 emissions prompted a search for alternate sources of energy and a reduction in CO2. Photocatalysis driven by solar light has been found as a potential research area to tackle both these problems. In this direction, SAC@MOF (Single-atom loaded MOFs) photocatalysis is an emerging field and a promising technology. The unique properties of single-atom catalysts (SACs), such as high catalytic activity and selectivity, are leveraged in these systems. Photocatalysis, focusing on the utilization of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as platforms for creating single-atom catalysts (SACs) characterized by metal single-atoms (SAs) as their active sites, are noted for their unparalleled atomic efficiency, precisely defined active sites, and superior photocatalytic performance. The synergy between MOFs and SAs in photocatalytic systems is meticulously examined, highlighting how they collectively enhance photocatalytic efficiency. This review examines SAC@MOF development and applications in environmental and energy sectors, focusing on synthesis and stabilization methods for SACs on MOFs and also characterization techniques vital for understanding these catalysts. The potential of SAC@MOF in CO2 Photoreduction and Photocatalytic H2 evolution is highlighted, emphasizing its role in green energy technologies and advances in materials science and Photocatalysis.

Efficient porphyrin integrated UiO-66 probes for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of antibiotic residues in milk

Dual-emissive fluorescence probes were designed by integrating porphyrin into the frameworks of UiO-66 for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of amoxicillin (AMX). Porphyrin integrated UiO-66 showed dual emission in the blue and red region. AMX resulted in the quenching of blue fluorescence component, attributable to the charge neutralization and hydrogen bonds induced energy transfer. AMX was detected using (F438/F654) as output signals. Two linear relationships were observed (from 10 to 1000 nM and 1 to 100 µM), with a limit of detection of 27 nM. The porphyrin integrated UiO-66 probe was used to detect AMX in practical samples. This work widens the road for the development of dual/multiple emissive fluorescence sensors for analytical applications, providing materials and theoretical supporting for food, environmental, and human safety.

Research on carbon dioxide capture materials used for carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage technology: a review

In recent years, climate change has increasingly become one of the major challenges facing mankind today, seriously threatening the survival and sustainable development of mankind. Dramatically increasing carbon dioxide concentrations are thought to cause a severe greenhouse effect, leading to severe and sustained global warming, associated climate instability and unwelcome natural disasters, melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns. The treatment of flue gas from thermal power plants uses carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, one of the most promising current methods to accomplish significant CO2 emission reduction. In order to implement the technological and financial system of CO2 capture, which is the key technology of CCUS technology and accounts for 70-80% of the overall cost of CCUS technology, it is crucial to create more effective adsorbents. Nowadays, with the development and application of various carbon dioxide capture materials, it is necessary to review and summarize carbon dioxide capture materials in time. In this paper, the main technologies of CO2 capture are reviewed, with emphasis on the latest research status of CO2 capture materials, such as amines, zeolites, alkali metals, as well as emerging MOFs and carbon nanomaterials. More and more research on CO2 capture materials has used a variety of improved methods, which have achieved high CO2 capture performance. For example, doping of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with metal atoms significantly increases the active site on the surface of the material, which has a significant impact on improving the CO2 capture capacity and performance stability of LDH. Although many carbon capture materials have been developed, high cost and low technology scale remain major obstacles to CO2 capture. Future research should focus on designing low-cost, high-availability carbon capture materials.

Recent advancements in modifications of metal-organic frameworks-based materials for enhanced water purification and contaminant detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a key focus in water treatment and monitoring due to their unique structural features, including extensive surface area, customizable porosity, reversible adsorption, and high catalytic efficiency. While numerous reviews have discussed MOFs in environmental remediation, this review specifically addresses recent advancements in modifying MOFs to enhance their effectiveness in water purification and monitoring. It underscores their roles as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and in luminescent and electrochemical sensing. Advancements such as pore modification, defect engineering, and functionalization, combined synergistically with advanced materials, have led to the development of recyclable MOF-based nano-adsorbents, Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, nanocomposites, and hybrid materials. These innovations have broadened the spectrum of removable contaminants and improved material recyclability. Additionally, this review delves into the creation of multifunctional MOF materials, the development of robust MOF variants, and the simplification of synthesis methods, marking significant progress in MOF sensor technology. Furthermore, the review addresses current challenges in this field and proposes potential future research directions and practical applications. The growing research interest in MOFs underscores the need for an updated synthesis of knowledge in this area, focusing on both current challenges and future opportunities in water remediation.

A new 1D Mn(II) coordination polymer: Synthesis, crystal structure, hirshfeld surface analysis and molecular docking studies

The synthesis of novel metal-organic coordination polymers (MOCP) with the chemical formula [Mn2L (SCN)2(OH)2]3·CH3OH [L = 1,5-bis(pyridine-4-ylmethylene) carbonohydrazide] {1} was accomplished using two different techniques: solvothermal and sonochemical ultrasonic-assisted. An investigation was carried out to examine the impact of various factors such as reaction time, sonication power, temperature, and reactant concentration on the morphology and size of the crystals. Interestingly, it was found that sonication power and temperature did not affect the crystals' morphology and size. To further analyze the prepared microcrystals of MOCPs, SEM was utilized to examine their surface morphology, and XRD, elemental evaluation composition. The identification of the functional groups present in the prepared Mn-MOCPs was accomplished through the utilization of FT-IR spectroscopy. Subsequently, the calcination of 1 in an air atmosphere at 650 °C led to the formation of Mn3O4 nanoparticles. The geometric and electronic structure of the MOCPs was evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The utilization of molecular docking methodologies demonstrated that the best cavity of the human androgen receptor possessed an interaction energy of -116.3 kJ mol-1. This energy encompassed a combination of both bonding and non-bonding interactions. The Results showed that steric interaction and electrostatic potential are the main interactions in AR polymer and Mn(II). These interactions in the defined cavity indicated that this polymer could be an effective anti-prostate candidate, because AR is involved in the growth of prostate cancer cells, and these interactions indicated the inhibition of prostate cancer cell growth.

pyCOFBuilder: A Python Package for Automated Creation of Covalent Organic Framework Models Based on the Reticular Approach

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained significant popularity in recent years due to their unique ability to provide a high surface area and customizable pore geometry and chemistry, making them an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. However, exploring COFs experimentally can be arduous and time-consuming due to their immense number of potential structures. As a result, computational high-throughput studies have become an attractive option. Nevertheless, generating COF structures can also be a challenging and time-consuming task. To address this challenge, here, we introduce the pyCOFBuilder, an open-source Python package designed to facilitate the generation of COF structures for computational studies. The pyCOFBuilder software provides an easy-to-use set of functionalities to generate COF structures following the reticular approach. In this paper, we describe the implementation, main features, and capabilities of the pyCOFBuilder, demonstrating its utility for generating COF structures with varying topologies and chemical properties. pyCOFBuilder is freely available on GitHub at https://github.com/lipelopesoliveira/pyCOFBuilder.

A series of isostructural metal-organic frameworks for an enhanced electro-catalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Three new isostructural MOFs (ZnTIA, CoTIA and CdTIA) were synthesized by the solvothermal synthesis of the organic linker 5-triazole isophthalic acid (5-TIA) with the transition metals Zn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) in the presence of the structure directing agent tetramethyl ammonium chloride (TMA). These three MOFs were characterized thoroughly by ScXRD, PXRD, FT-IR, TGA, BET and SEM. They have excellent thermal and water stabilities. Among all these MOFs mentioned, pristine CoTIA exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It exhibits a Tafel slope of 68.9 mV dec-1 with an overpotential of 337 mV at 10 mA cm-2 current density. The OER activity of the CoTIA MOF is relatively equivalent to that of the state-of-the-art catalyst (RuO2). Furthermore, the mechanical stability of crystalline ZnTIA, CoTIA and CdTIA MOFs was tested under ball mill pressure. The result showed that all the MOFs exhibit low tolerance to mechanical force because their structure was highly distorted or collapsed under such pressure, which is reflected by their poor electrocatalytic OER activity.

Exploring the Role of Ligand Connectivity in MOFs Mechanical Stability: The Case of MIL-100(Cr)

The key parameters governing the mechanical stability of highly porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are yet to be clearly understood. This study focuses on the role of the linker connectivity by investigating the mechanical stability of MIL-100(Cr), a mesoporous MOF with a hierarchical structure and a tritopic linker, and comparing it to MIL-101(Cr) having instead a ditopic linker. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the high-pressure behavior of MIL-100(Cr) with both solid and fluid pressure transmitting media (PTM). In the case of a solid medium, MIL-100(Cr) undergoes amorphization at about 0.6 GPa, while silicone oil as a PTM delays amorphization until 12 GPa due to the fluid penetration into the pores. Both of these values are considerably higher than those of MIL-101(Cr). MIL-100(Cr) also exhibits a bulk modulus almost ten times larger than that of MIL-101(Cr). This set of results coherently proves the superior stability of MIL-100(Cr) under compression. We ascribe this to the higher connectivity of the organic linker in MIL-100(Cr), which enhances its interconnection between the metal nodes. These findings shed light on the importance of linker connectivity in the mechanical stability of MOFs, a relevant contribution to the quest for designing more robust MOFs.

Polydopamine-Mediated Metal-Organic Frameworks Modification for Improved Biocompatibility

Engineered nanomaterials are promising in biomedical application. However, insufficient understanding of their biocompatibility at the cellular and organic levels prevents their widely biomedical applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polydopamine (PDA)-modified ZIF-8 are chosen as model nanomaterials due to its emergent role in nanomedicine. In vitro, the results demonstrate that the PDA coating greatly alleviates the cytotoxicity of ZIF-8 to RAW264.7, LO2, and HST6, which represent three different cell types in liver organs. Mechanistically, ZIF-8 entering into the cells can greatly induce the reactive oxygen species generation, which subsequently induces cell cycle delay and autophagy, ultimately leads to enhanced cytotoxicity. Further, human umbilical vein endothelial cells model and zebrafish embryos assay also confirm that PDA can compromise the ZIF-8 toxicity significantly. This study reveals that PDA-coated MOFs nanomaterials show great potential in nano-based drug delivery systems .

Unveiling the potential of HKUST-1: synthesis, activation, advantages and biomedical applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a unique class of nanostructured materials, resulting from the self-assembly of metal ions or clusters with organic ligands, offering a wide range of applications in fields such as drug delivery, gas catalysis, and electrochemical sensing. Among them, HKUST-1, a copper-based MOF, has gained substantial attention due to its remarkable three-dimensional porous structure. Comprising copper ions and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid, HKUST-1 exhibits an extraordinary specific surface area and pronounced porosity, making it a promising candidate in biomedicine. Notably, the incorporation of copper ions endows HKUST-1 with noteworthy activities, including antitumor, antibacterial, and wound healing-promoting properties. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the various synthesis methods and activation pathways employed in the preparation of HKUST-1. We also explore the distinct advantages of HKUST-1 in terms of its structural properties and functionalities. Furthermore, we investigate the exciting and rapidly evolving biomedical applications of HKUST-1. From its role in tumor treatment to its antibacterial effects and its ability to promote wound healing, we showcase the multifaceted potential of HKUST-1 in addressing critical challenges in biomedicine.

Rapid Exciton Transport and Structural Defects in Individual Porphyrinic Metal Organic Framework Microcrystals

To date, spectroscopic characterization of porphyrin-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has relied almost exclusively on ensemble techniques, which provide only structurally averaged insight into the functional properties of these promising photochemical platforms. This work employs time-resolved pump-probe microscopy to probe ultrafast dynamics in PCN-222 MOF single crystals. The simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution of the technique enables the correlation of spectroscopic observables to both inter- and intracrystal structural heterogeneity. The pump-probe measurements show that significant differences in the excited state lifetime exist between individual PCN-222 crystals of an ensemble. On a single PCN-222 crystal, differences in excited state lifetime and photoluminescence quantum yield are found to correlate to microscale structural defects introduced at crystallization. Pump probe microscopy also enables the direct measurement of excited state transport. Imaging of exciton transport on individual MOF crystals reveals rapid, but subdiffusive exciton transport which slows on the 10s of ps time scale. Time-averaged exciton diffusion coefficients over the first 200 ps span a range of 0.27 to 1.0 cm2/s, indicating that excited states are rapidly transported through the porphyrin network of PCN-222 before being trapped. Together, these single-particle-resolved measurements provide important new insight into the role played by structural defects on the photochemical functionality of porphyrin-based MOFs.

Interfacing metal organic frameworks with polymers or carbon-based materials: from simple to hierarchical porous and nanostructured composites

In the past few years, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been assembled with (bio)polymers and a series of carbon-based materials (graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, etc.) leading to a wide range of composites differing in their chemical composition, pore structure and functionality. The objective was mainly to overcome the limitations of MOFs in terms of mechanical properties, chemical stability and processability while imparting novel functionality (electron conductivity, (photo)catalytic activity, etc.) and hierarchical porosity. These composites were considered for numerous applications including gas/liquid adsorption and separation, (photo)catalysis, biomedicine, energy storage, conversion and so on. The performance of such composites depends strongly on their microstructural and physico-chemical properties which are mainly driven by the chemical strategies used to design and process such composites. In this perspective article, we propose to cover this topic and provide a useful survey of recent progress in the synthesis and design of MOFs-carbon material composites. This article will describe the development of composites with increasing complexity in terms of porous architecture, spatial structuration and organisation, and functionality.

Net-clipping as a top-down approach for the prediction of topologies of MOFs built from reduced-symmetry linkers

Reticular materials constructed from regular molecular building blocks (MBBs) have been widely explored in the past three decades. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the assembly of novel, intricate materials using less-symmetric ligands; however, current methods for predicting structure are not amenable to this increased complexity. To address this gap, we propose herein a generalised version of the net-clipping approach for anticipating the topology of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from organic linkers and different polygonal and polyhedral MBBs. It relies on the generation of less-symmetric nets with less-connected linkers, via the rational deconstruction of more-symmetric and more-connected linkers in edge-transitive nets. We applied our top-down strategy to edge-transitive nets containing 4-c tetrahedral, 6-c hexagonal, 8-c cubic or 12-c hexagonal prism linkers, envisaging the formation of 102 derived and 46 clipped nets. Among these, we report 33 new derived nets (icn7-icn39) and 6 new clipped nets (icn1-icn6). Importantly, the feasibility of using net-clipping to anticipate clipped nets is supported by literature examples and new experimental additions. Finally, we suggest and illustrate that net-clipping can be extended to less-regular, non-edge transitive nets as well as to covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), thus opening new avenues for the rational design of new reticular materials exhibiting unprecedented topologies.

Fluorinated Metal-Organic Frameworks with Dual-Functionalized Linkers to Enhance Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and High Water Adsorption

Photocatalytic H2 evolution has recently attracted much attention due to the reduction of nonrenewable energy sources and the increasing demand for renewable sustainable energies. Meanwhile, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging potential photocatalysts due to their structural adaptability, porous configuration, several active sites, and a wide range of performance. Nevertheless, there are still limitations in the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction of MOFs with higher charge recombination rates. Herein, a copper-organic framework with dual-functionalized linkers {[Cu2(L)(H2O)2]·(5DMF)(4H2O)}n (fluorinated MOF(Cu)-NH2; H4L = 3,5-bis(2,4-dicarboxylic acid)-4-(trifluoromethyl)aniline) and with a rare 2-nodal 4,12-connected shp topology has been synthesized by a ligand-functionalization strategy and evaluated for the photocatalytic production of H2 to overcome this issue. According to the photocatalytic H2 evolution results, fluorinated MOF(Cu)-NH2 showed a hydrogen evolution rate of 63.64 mmol·g-1·h-1 exposed to light irradiation, indicating values 12 times that of the pure ligand when cocatalyst Pt and photosensitizer Rhodamine B were present. In addition, this MOF showed a maximum water absorption of 205 cm3·g-1. When dual-functionalized linkers are introduced to the structure of this MOF, its visible-light absorption increases considerably, which can be associated with nearly narrower energy band gaps (2.18 eV). More importantly, this MOF contributes to water absorption and electron collection and transport, acting as a bridge that helps to separate and transfer photogenerated charges while shortening the electron migration path because of the functional group in its configuration. The current paper seeks to shed light on the design of advanced visible-light photocatalysts with no MOF calcination for H2 photocatalytic production.

Gold(I)-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for Carboxylation of Alkynes with CO2

Construction of gold-based metal-organic frameworks (Au-MOFs) would bring the merits of gold chemistry into MOFs. However, it still remains challenging because gold cations are easily reduced to metallic gold under solvothermal conditions. Herein, we present the first example of Au-MOFs prepared from the networking of cyclic trinuclear gold(I) complexes by formal transimination reaction in a rapid (<15 min) and scalable (up to 1 g) fashion under ambient condition. The Au-MOFs feature uniform porosity, high crystallinity, and superior chemical stability toward base (i.e., 20 M NaOH). With open Au(I) sites in the skeleton, the Au-MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts delivered good performance and substrate tolerance for the carboxylation reactions of alkynes with CO2. This work demonstrates a facile approach to reticularly synthesize Au-MOFs by combining the coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry.

Superhydrophobic MOFs with enhanced catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2

A general approach to prepare superhydrophobic MOFs (denoted as MOFs-CF3) through a post-decorating strategy for highly efficient chemical fixation of CO2 was demonstrated. The enhanced catalytic activity of MOFs-CF3 is attributed to a synergistic effect between the Lewis acid sites of MOFs and modification of the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, which resulted in a high CO2 enrichment capacity. The possible mechanism of cycloaddition catalyzed by the MOFs-CF3 catalyst was also proposed.

Temperature-dependent rearrangement of gas molecules in ultramicroporous materials for tunable adsorption of CO2 and C2H2

The interactions between adsorbed gas molecules within porous metal-organic frameworks are crucial to gas selectivity but remain poorly explored. Here, we report the modulation of packing geometries of CO₂ and C₂H₂ clusters within the ultramicroporous CUK-1 material as a function of temperature. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals a unique temperature-dependent reversal of CO₂ and C₂H₂ adsorption affinities on CUK-1, which is validated by gas sorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments, affording high-purity C₂H₂ (99.95%) from the equimolar mixture of C₂H₂/CO₂ via a one-step purification process. At low temperatures (<253 K), CUK-1 preferentially adsorbs CO₂ with both high selectivity (>10) and capacity (170 cm³ g^-1) owing to the formation of CO₂ tetramers that simultaneously maximize the guest-guest and host-guest interactions. At room temperature, conventionally selective adsorption of C₂H₂ is observed. The selectivity reversal, structural robustness, and facile regeneration of CUK-1 suggest its potential for producing high-purity C₂H₂ by temperature-swing sorption.

Semirigid Highly Conjugated Zirconium-Organic Framework for the Capture of Micropollutants and Solar-Light Photodegradation

Micro-organic pollutants, particularly organic dyes and personal care products (PPCPs), are widely present in wastewater, and thus pose a serious risk to human health. The capture and solar-light photodegradation of micro-organic pollutants are highly challenging tasks, which require the design and synthesis of microporous materials with specific structures. As we know, organic dyes and PPCPs can be absorbed via π-π* stacking. In this paper, an iron-based metal-organic framework (Fe-UiO-68-terNap) containing semirigid conjugated aromatic ligands is prepared for the capture and solar-light photodegradation of multiple water contaminants. UiO-68-terNap was synthesized based on ternaphthalene with π-π* stacking, which would increase the adsorption capacities of organic micropollutants in wastewater. Additionally, the formation of Fe-O-Zr enhances the charge-separation ability resulting in the successful degradation of micropollutants in 240 min. The novel material has been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Fe K-edge XANES, which provide key insights at a molecular level for the design of novel materials for the capture and photodegradation of organic micropollutants.

Ortho Effects of Tricarboxylate Linkers in Regulating Topologies of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

A linker design strategy is developed to attain novel polynuclear rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented topologies. We uncover the critical role of ortho-functionalized tricarboxylate ligands in directing the construction of highly connected RE MOFs. The acidity and conformation of the tricarboxylate linkers were altered by substituting with diverse functional groups at the ortho position of the carboxyl groups. For instance, the acidity difference between carboxylate moieties resulted in forming three hexanuclear RE MOFs with novel (3,3,3,10,10)-c wxl, (3,12)-c gmx, and (3,3,3,12)-c joe topologies, respectively. In addition, when a bulky methyl group was introduced, the incompatibility between the net topology and ligand conformation guided the co-appearance of hexanuclear and tetranuclear clusters, generating a novel 3-periodic MOF with a (3,3,8,10)-c kyw net. Interestingly, a fluoro-functionalized linker prompted the formation of two unusual trinuclear clusters and produced a MOF with a fascinating (3,8,10)-c lfg topology, which could be gradually replaced by a more stable tetranuclear MOF with a new (3,12)-c lee topology with extended reaction time. This work enriches the polynuclear clusters library of RE MOFs and unveils new opportunities to construct MOFs with unprecedented structural complexity and vast application potential.

Effect of Functional Groups on Low-Concentration Carbon Dioxide Capture in -Type Metal-Organic Frameworks

The selective capture of low-concentration CO₂ from air or confined spaces remains a great challenge. In this study, various functional groups were introduced into UiO-66 to generate functionalized derivatives (UiO-66-R, R = NO₂, NH₂, OH, and CH₃), aiming at significantly enhancing CO₂ adsorption and separation efficiency. More significantly, UiO-66-NO₂ and UiO-66-NH₂ with high polarity exhibit exceptional CO₂ affinity and optimal separation characteristics in mixed CO₂/O₂/N₂ (1:21:78). In addition, the impressive stability of UiO-66-NO₂ and UiO-66-NH₂ endows them with excellent recycling stability. The effective adsorption and separation performances demonstrated by these two functional materials suggest their potential as promising physical adsorbents for capturing low-concentration CO₂.

Molecular Catalysis of Energy Relevance in Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Higher Coordination Sphere to System Effects

The modularity and synthetic flexibility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have provoked analogies with enzymes, and even the term MOFzymes has been coined. In this review, we focus on molecular catalysis of energy relevance in MOFs, more specifically water oxidation, oxygen and carbon dioxide reduction, as well as hydrogen evolution in context of the MOF-enzyme analogy. Similar to enzymes, catalyst encapsulation in MOFs leads to structural stabilization under turnover conditions, while catalyst motifs that are synthetically out of reach in a homogeneous solution phase may be attainable as secondary building units in MOFs. Exploring the unique synthetic possibilities in MOFs, specific groups in the second and third coordination sphere around the catalytic active site have been incorporated to facilitate catalysis. A key difference between enzymes and MOFs is the fact that active site concentrations in the latter are often considerably higher, leading to charge and mass transport limitations in MOFs that are more severe than those in enzymes. High catalyst concentrations also put a limit on the distance between catalysts, and thus the available space for higher coordination sphere engineering. As transport is important for MOF-borne catalysis, a system perspective is chosen to highlight concepts that address the issue. A detailed section on transport and light-driven reactivity sets the stage for a concise review of the currently available literature on utilizing principles from Nature and system design for the preparation of catalytic MOF-based materials.

Stable Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks: Crystal Structure, Photoluminescence, and Chemical Sensing of Vanillylmandelic Acid as a Biomarker of Pheochromocytoma

Several isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks, viz. [Ln(DCHB)_1.5phen]_n (Ln-MOFs, where Ln = Eu for 1, Tb for 2, Sm for 3 and Dy for 4), are successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal reactions of 4'-di(4-carboxylphenoxy)hydroxyl-2, 2'-bipyridyl (H₂DCHB) and lanthanide nitrates as well as chelator 1,10-phenantroline (phen). These structures are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the representative Ln-MOF 1 is a fivefold interpenetrated framework with the uncoordinated Lewis base N sites form DCHB^2- ligands. The photoluminescence research studies reveal that Ln-MOFs 1-4 exhibit characteristic fluorescent emissions from ligand-induced lanthanide Ln(III) ions, while the single-component emission spectra of Ln-MOF 4 are all located in a white region under different excitations. The absence of coordinated water and the interpenetration property of the structures are conducive to the structure rigidity, and the results display that Ln-MOF 1 has high thermal/chemical stabilities in common solvents and a wide pH range as well as the boiling water. Notably, luminescent sensing studies reveal that Ln-MOF 1 with prominent fluorescence properties can perform in highly sensitive and selective sensing of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) in aqueous systems (K_SV = 562.8 L·mol^-1; LOD = 4.6 × 10^-4 M), which can potentially establish a detection platform for the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma via multiquenching mechanisms. Moreover, the 1@MMMs sensing membranes comprised of Ln-MOF 1 and a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer can also be facilely developed for VMA detection in aqueous media, suggesting the enhanced convenience and efficiency of practical sensing applications.

Global trends in the research and development of medical/pharmaceutical wastewater treatment over the half-century

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted public health and the worldwide economy. The overstretched operation of health systems around the world is accompanied by potential and ongoing environmental threats. At present, comprehensive scientific assessments of research on temporal changes in medical/pharmaceutical wastewater (MPWW), as well as estimations of researcher networks and scientific productivity are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a thorough literature study, using bibliometrics to reproduce research on medical wastewater over nearly half a century. Our primary goal is systematically to map the evolution of keyword clusters over time, and to obtain the structure and credibility of clusters. Our secondary objective was to measure research network performance (country, institution, and author) using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. We extracted 2306 papers published between 1981 and 2022. The co-cited reference network identified 16 clusters with well-structured networks (Q = 0.7716, S = 0.896). The main trends were as follows: 1) Early MPWW research prioritized sources of wastewater, and this cluster was considered to be the mainstream research frontier and direction, representing an important source and priority research area. 2) Mid-term research focused on characteristic contaminants and detection technologies. Particularly during 2000-2010, a period of rapid developments in global medical systems, pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in MPWW were recognized as a major threat to human health and the environment. 3) Recent research has focused on novel degradation technologies for PhC-containing MPWW, with high scores for research on biological methods. Wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as being consistent with or predictive of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. Therefore, the application of MPWW in COVID-19 tracing will be of great interest to environmentalists. These results could guide the future direction of funding agencies and research groups.

Improving the performance of an anionic MOF by counter cation replacement as electrode material in a full cell setup of a potassium ion capacitor

Potassium-based energy storage devices are attracting increasing attention as an alternative to lithium and sodium systems. In addition, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be considered as promising electrode materials for this type of device due to their advantageous properties. Herein, the anionic MOF JUMP-1 and its analog with pre-loading of potassium cations, namely JUMP-1(K), were synthesized and characterized. The anionic framework of JUMP-1 is found to be extremely stable towards the exchange of the dimethylammonium cations by potassium ions. These MOFs were tested in composite electrodes in combination with conventional organic electrolytes as anode materials in a potassium-based system, including the full cell assembly of a potassium ion capacitor (KIC). The results show the significant improvement in capacity between the pristine JUMP-1 and the potassium-exchanged analog JUMP-1(K) as electrode materials. KICs containing JUMP-1(K) coupled with activated carbon (AC) display a promising stability over 4000 cycles. According to the results from these studies, the composite MOF electrode with the potassium-exchange analog JUMP-1(K) presents a promising approach, for which the electrochemical performance compared to the pristine anionic MOF is significantly enhanced.

Molecular docking with SARS-CoV-2 and potential drug property of a bioactive novel Zn(II) polymer: A combined experimental and theoretical study

A new Zn(II) coordination polymer based on o-phthalato (Phth) and 2-aminopyridine (2-Ampy) viz. {[Zn(2-Ampy)₂(Phth)]∙(H₂O)]}_n (1) has been synthesized at room temperature and characterized by elemental analyses, electronic spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis (TGA/DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The basic trimeric units of 1 form a polymeric chain by N-H⋯O and π⋯π interactions. These polymeric chains interconnect through various non-covalent interactions in two perpendicular directions to ultimately give rise to a 3D architecture of 1. The interesting non-covalent interactions in 1, contributing to its stability in the solid state are studied by Hirshfeld surface analysis and other different theoretical tools. Molecular docking study of 1 is performed against six different proteins of SARS-CoV-2. The drug potential of the synthesized compound is evaluated by ADMET calculations.

Multicomponent Anti-Kasha's Rule Emission from Nanotubular Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Detection of Small Molecules

The peak photoluminescence (PL) of conventional fluorophores is independent of the excitation wavelength (called Kasha's rule), while the search of metal-organic framework materials with the so-called anti-Kasha's rule emission remains very limited. Herein, we report the observation of anti-Kasha's rule emission in a multicomponent PL three-dimensional nanotubular metal-organic framework (abbr. MOF-NT), [Zn(μ-L)(μ-bix)]_n·0.33nH₂O [H₂L = biphenyl-3,5-dicarboxylic acid; bix = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)benzene]. The MOF-NT crystalline sample represents a notable example of strong excitation-dependent fluorescence from the ultraviolet to the visible spectral region. Moreover, by virtue of electronic flexibility and high PL efficiency, MOF-NT shows a discriminative PL response between isomeric nitroaromatic compounds. The work demonstrated the intrinsic anti-Kasha's rule emission in the crystalline-state MOF materials, providing new visions for the development of advanced solid-state emissive materials.

Pore topology analysis in porous molecular systems

Porous molecular materials are constructed from molecules that assemble in the solid-state such that there are cavities or an interconnected pore network. It is challenging to control the assembly of these systems, as the interactions between the molecules are generally weak, and subtle changes in the molecular structure can lead to vastly different intermolecular interactions and subsequently different crystal packing arrangements. Similarly, the use of different solvents for crystallization, or the introduction of solvent vapour, can result in different polymorphs and pore networks being formed. It is difficult to uniquely describe the pore networks formed, and thus we analyse 1033 crystal structures of porous molecular systems to determine the underlying topology of their void spaces and potential guest diffusion networks. Material-agnostic topology definitions are applied. We use the underlying topological nets to examine whether it is possible to apply isoreticular design principles to porous molecular materials. Overall, our automatic analysis of a large dataset gives a general insight into the relationships between molecular topologies and the topological nets of their pore network. We show that while porous molecular systems tend to pack similarly to non-porous molecules, the topologies of their pore distributions resemble those of more prominent porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks.

Hydrogen-Bond-Connected 2D Zn-LMOF with Fluorescent Sensing for Inorganic Pollutants and Nitro Aromatic Explosives in the Aqueous Phase

Herein, a novel luminescent Zn-LMOF, JLU-MOF109 ([Zn(PBBA)(H₂O)]·3DMF·2H₂O, PBBA = 4,4'-(2,6-pyrazinediyl)bis[benzoic acid], DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), was successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Zinc ions are connected by PBBA ligands to form two-dimensional (2D) layers, and the layers are further propped up through hydrogen-bonding interactions. JLU-MOF109 exhibits good sensitivity to inorganic pollutants, Fe³⁺ and Cr₂O₇^2-, as well as nitro aromatic explosives, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol. JLU-MOF109 exhibits high K_sv (at 10⁴ M^-1 level) and low limit of detection values (∼10^-6 mol/L) for the abovementioned hazardous pollutants, which is better than a majority of previously reported MOF-based fluorescent sensors. With good stability in the aqueous phase, JLU-MOF109 can serve as a promising chemical sensor for pollutant detection in wastewater.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Chemosensor for Ultrafast and Ultrasensitive Detection of Pd2+ Ions in Water, Real Specimens, and Test Strips

A new ultrasensitive and ultrafast Al(III) metal-organic-framework (MOF)-based probe (1) was constructed to detect Pd²⁺ ions. Extremely selective recognition of Pd²⁺ ion was demonstrated by the guest-free compound 1 (called 1') using a fluorescence signal. The quenching in the fluorescence signal was observed due to the weak interaction between the linker alkyne-π bond and Pd²⁺. The mechanism of isophthalic alkyne-π and Pd²⁺ interaction was systematically examined with the help of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The response time of the MOF for sensing of Pd²⁺ was 30 s, which is the lowest response time for MOF-based Pd²⁺ sensing to date, with an ultralow detection limit (102 nM) and Stern-Volmer constant (4.39 × 10³ M^-1), evidencing the outstanding ability to sense Pd²⁺ ion by this probe. The Pd²⁺ detection limit falls among the lowest values. Activated MOF (1') also showed considerable recyclability up to five steps with a constant sensing ability. In different water resources (Milli-Q water, lake water, river water, and tap water), the probe also showed excellent sensing ability. A paper-strip device was developed for the applicability of our material for the real field sensing application of Pd²⁺. The relevance of 1' is not only up to Pd²⁺, but it could also sense palladium in other possible oxidation states.

Selective Low-Level Detection of a Perilous Nitroaromatic Compound Using Tailor-Made Cd(II)-Based Coordination Polymers: Study of Photophysical Properties and Effect of Functional Groups

Three coordination polymers (CPs 1-3) are prepared based on diverse electron-donating properties and coordination arrangements of conjugated ligands. Interestingly, this is also reflected in their photophysical properties. The distinguishable high emissive nature of the luminescent coordination polymer shows its potentiality toward the detection of the perilous substance 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid (PA). TNP has a higher propensity among explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) due to its significant π···π interaction with the free benzene moieties present in the CPs. Among CPs 1-3, 2 exhibits the highest sensitivity and selectivity toward TNP because of the most favorable π-π stacking with the conjugated organic linker. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) and corresponding quenching constant (K_SV) from the Stern-Volmer (SV) plot for 1, 2, and 3 are found to be 0.68 μM and 7.49 × 10⁴ M^-1, 0.41 μM and 8.01 × 10⁴ M^-1, and 1.18 μM and 8.1 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism is also highly influenced by their structure and coordination arrangement.

Rational Synthesis of a Stable Rod MOF for Ultrasensitive Detection of Nitenpyram and Nitrofurazone in Natural Water Systems

Overuse of nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in agricultural products poses enormous risks to ecosystems, and effective detection and quantification of these residual pollutants are of great concern. Although several strategies have been established for detecting nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in water, searching for a new sensor material with great sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability remains challenging. Here, we design and synthesize a stable metal-organic framework (MOF) (Zn-CPTA) by employing an organic linker based on the coordination features of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate and picolinic acid. Zn-CPTA is a 3D framework built from Zn-O-Zn chains called rod secondary building units, which contains 1D open channels modified by uncoordinated carboxyl O atoms and exhibits impressive chemical stability in aqueous solutions within a pH range from 2 to 12. Especially, fluorescent Zn-CPTA can quickly and sensitively detect nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in aqueous solutions with a high quenching constant and low detection limit (LOD) (K_SV values for nitenpyram and nitrofurazone are 1.67 × 10⁴ and 1.02 × 10⁵ M^-1 with LOD of 0.625 and 0.126 μM, respectively), as well as outstanding selectivity and recyclability. Notably, the LOD value is the lowest among the reported MOFs used for nitrofurazone detection. Besides, experiments and density functional theory calculations are combined to explain the quenching mechanism. Finally, the practical application of Zn-CPTA was further explored in real environment samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Spectrophotometric Determination of Trace Amount of Total FeII/FeIII and Live Cell Imaging of a Carboxylato Zn(II) Coordination Polymer

The coordination polymer, (Zn(II)-CP, 1), {[Zn(2,6-NDC)(4-Cltpy)](H₂O)₄} (1) (2,6-H₂NDC = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and 4-Cltpy = 4'-chloro-[2,2';6',2″]terpyridine) is structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement and other physicochemical studies (PXRD, FTIR, thermal analysis, microanalytical data). 4-Cltpy acts as end-capping ligand, and NDC^2- is a carboxylato bridging motif to constitute ZnN₃O₂ distorted trigonal bipyramid core that propagates to construct 1D chain. The coordination polymer, 1, detects total iron (Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺) in aqueous solution by visual color change, colorless to pink. Absorption spectrophotometric technique in aqueous medium measures the limit of detection (LOD) 0.11 μM (Fe²⁺) and 0.15 μM (Fe³⁺), and binding constants (K_d) are 6.7 × 10⁴ M^-1 (Fe³⁺) and 3.33 × 10⁴ M^-1 (Fe²⁺). Biocompatibility of 1 is examined in live cells, and intracellular Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ are detected in MDA-MB 231 cells. Zn(II) substitution is assumed upon addition of Fe^III/Fe^II solution to the suspension of the coordination polymer, 1, in water-acetonitrile (41:1) (LZn^II + Fe^III/II → LFe^III + Zn^II, where L is defined as coordinated ligands), which is accompanied by changing from colorless to pink at room temperature. The color of the mixture may be assumed to the charge transfer transition from carboxylate-O to Cltpy via Fe(II/III) bridging center (carboxylate-O-Fe-CltPy). The product isolated from the reaction is finally characterized as Fe(III)@1-CP. It is presumed that product Fe(II)@1-CP may undergo fast aerial oxidation to transform Fe(III)@1-CP. The Fe^III exchanged framework (Fe(III)@1-CP) has been characterized by PXRD, IR, TGA and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX)-SEM. The MTT assay calculates the cell viability (%), and the tolerance limit is 100 μM to total Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺.

Influence of Tartrate Ligand Coordination over Luminescence Properties of Chiral Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The present work reports on a detailed discussion about the synthesis, characterization, and luminescence properties of three pairs of enantiopure 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with general formula {[Ln₂(L/D-tart)₃(H₂O)₂]·3H₂O}_n (3D_Ln-L/D, where Ln = Sm(III), Eu(III) or Gd(III), and L/D-tart = L- or D-tartrate), and ten pairs of enantiopure 2D coordination polymers (CPs) with general formula [Ln(L/D-Htart)₂(OH)(H₂O)₂]_n (2D_Ln-L/D, where Ln = Y(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III) or Yb(III), and L/D-Htart = hydrogen L- or D-tartrate) based on single-crystal X-ray structures. Enantiopure nature of the samples has been further corroborated by Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) as well as by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. Solid-state emission spectra of Eu(III), Tb(III), and Dy(III)-based compounds confirm the occurrence of ligand-to-metal charge transfers in view of the characteristic emissions for these lanthanide ions, and emission decay curves were also recorded to estimate the emission lifetimes for the reported compounds. A complete theoretical study was accomplished to better understand the energy transfers occurring in the Eu-based counterparts, which allows for explaining the different performances of 3D-MOFs and 2D-layered compounds. As inferred from the colorimetric diagrams, emission characteristics of Eu-based 2D CPs depend on the temperature, so their luminescent thermometry has been determined on the basis of a ratiometric analysis between the ligand-centered and Eu-centered emission. Finally, a detailed study of the polarized luminescence intensity emitted by the samples is also accomplished to support the occurrence of chiro-optical activity.

Lanthanide(III) Ions and 5-Methylisophthalate Ligand Based Coordination Polymers: An Insight into Their Photoluminescence Emission and Chemosensing for Nitroaromatic Molecules

The work presented herein reports on the synthesis, structural and physico-chemical characterization, luminescence properties and luminescent sensing activity of a family of isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) with the general formula [Ln₂(μ₄-5Meip)₃(DMF)]_n (where Ln(III) = Sm (1_Sm), Eu (2_Eu), Gd (3_Gd), Tb (4_Tb) and Yb (5_Yb) and 5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylmethanamide). Crystal structures consist of 3D frameworks tailored by the linkage between infinite lanthanide(III)-carboxylate rods by means of the tetradentate 5Meip ligands. Photoluminescence measurements in solid state at variable temperatures reveal the best-in-class properties based on the capacity of the 5Meip ligand to provide efficient energy transfers to the lanthanide(III) ions, which brings intense emissions in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. On the one hand, compound 5_Yb displays characteristic lanthanide-centered bands in the NIR with sizeable intensity even at room temperature. Among the compounds emitting in the visible region, 4_Tb presents a high QY of 63%, which may be explained according to computational calculations. At last, taking advantage of the good performance as well as high chemical and optical stability of 4_Tb in water and methanol, its sensing capacity to detect 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) among other nitroaromatic-like explosives has been explored, obtaining high detection capacity (with K_sv around 10⁵ M^-1), low limit of detection (in the 10^-6-10^-7 M) and selectivity among other molecules (especially in methanol).

Separation of organic contaminant (dye) using the modified porous metal-organic framework (MIL)

Herein, the porous metal-organic framework (MIL-88B: Materials Institute Lavoisier) was synthesized and identified by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), EDS (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy), and XRD (X-ray powder diffraction) analyses. Then MIL-88B was modified using 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and presented as NH₂-MIL-88B. The synthesized materials were used to separate direct red dye 23 (DR23) as an organic contaminant from water. The effect of various important factors such as the amount of adsorbent, initial concentration of contaminants, and pH was investigated. The results showed that the modified adsorbent (NH₂-MIL-88B) had a higher adsorption capacity than the row adsorbent (MIL-88B). The amount of dye adsorption is high at lower pH values. The percentage of DR23 dye removal was complete under optimal conditions. Increasing the amount of adsorbent (0.001-0.003 g) and decreasing the pH (2.1-8.1) increases the percentage of dye removal and increasing the concentration of contaminant (50-125 mg/L) reduces the dye removal in the process. Isotherm data showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir model. Also, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models were used to investigate the adsorption kinetics. Dye adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with correlation coefficient (0.99 <). The results showed that the modified adsorbent could be used as a suitable adsorbent with a high adsorption capacity for dye removal from water.

Recent advances in metal-based nanoporous materials for sensing environmentally-related biomolecules

Highly sensitive, stable, selective, efficient, and short reaction time sensors play a substantial role in daily life/industry and are the need of the day. Due to the rising environmental issues, nanoporous carbon and metal-based materials have attracted significant attention in environmental analysis owing to their intriguing and multifunctional properties and cost-effective and rapid detection of different analytes by sensing applications. Environmental-related issues such as pollution have been a significant threat to the world. Therefore, it is necessary to fabricate highly promising performance-based sensor materials with excellent reliability, selectivity and good sensitivity for monitoring various analytes. In this regard, different methods have been employed to fabricate these sensors comprising metal, metal oxides, metal oxide carbon composites and MOFs leading to the formation of nanoporous metal and carbon composites. These composites have exceptional properties such as large surface area, distinctive porosity, and high conductivity, making them promising candidates for several versatile sensing applications. This review covers recent advances and significant studies in the sensing field of various nanoporous metal and carbon composites. Key challenges and future opportunities in this exciting field are also part of this review.
