Mechanical constraints to unbound expansion of B. subtilis on semi-solid surfaces

IMPORTANCE

How bacterial cells colonize new territory is a problem of fundamental microbiological and biophysical interest and is key to the emergence of several phenomena of biological, ecological, and medical relevance. Here, we demonstrate how bacteria stuck in a colony of finite size can resume exploration of new territory by aquaplaning and how they fine tune biofilm viscoelasticity to surface material properties that allows them differential mobility. We show how changing local interfacial forces and colony viscosity results in a plethora of bacterial morphologies on surfaces with different physical and mechanical properties.

Enhancing the mechanical properties and surface morphology of individualized Ti-mesh fabricated through additive manufacturing for the treatment of alveolar bone defects

Titanium meshes are widely utilized in alveolar bone augmentation, and this study aims to enhance the properties of titanium meshes through heat treatment (HT) and the synergistic finishing technology of electric field and flow field (EFSF). Our findings illustrate that the titanium mesh exhibits improved mechanical properties following HT treatment. The innovative EFSF technique, in combination with HT, has a substantial impact on improving the surface properties of titanium meshes. HT initiates grain fusion and reduces surface pores, resulting in enhanced tensile and elongation properties. EFSF further enhances these improvements by significantly reducing surface roughness and eliminating adhered titanium powder, a byproduct of selective laser melting printing. Increased hydrophilicity and surface-free energy are achieved after EFSF treatment. Notably, the EFSF-treated titanium mesh exhibits reduced bacterial adhesion and is non-toxic to osteoblast proliferation. These advancements increase its suitability for clinical alveolar bone augmentation.

Surface properties of membrane materials and their role in cell adhesion and biofilm formation of microalgae

In this study, the effects of surface properties of membrane materials on microalgae cell adhesion and biofilm formation were investigated using Chlorella vulgaris and five different types of membrane materials under hydrodynamic conditions. The results suggest that the contact angle (hydrophobicity), surface free energy, and free energy of cohesion of membrane materials alone could not sufficiently elucidate the selectivity of microalgae cell adhesion and biofilm formation on membrane materials surfaces, and membrane surface roughness played a dominant role in controlling biofilm formation rate, under tested hydrodynamic conditions. A lower level of biofilm EPS production was generally associated with a larger amount of biofilm formation. The zeta potential of membrane materials could enhance initial microalgae cell adhesion and biofilm formation through salt bridging or charge neutralization mechanisms.

Temporal dynamics of adhesion of oral bacteria to orthodontic appliances

Adhesion of the most common dental biofilm bacteria to alloys used in orthodontics in relation to surface characteristics was analyzed. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Streptococcus oralis (S. oralis), Veillonella parvula (V. parvula), and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actynomicetemcomitans) were incubated for 4 h with nickel-titanium (NiTi) and stainless-steel (SS) wires. The surface roughness and free energy of the alloys, as well as the hydrophobicity of the alloys and bacteria, were assessed. NiTi had higher surface free energy and rougher (p<0.001) and more hydrophilic surfaces than SS (p<0.001). The hydrophobic properties of the bacteria decreased in the following order: V. parvula>S. oralis>S. mutans>A. actynomicetemcomitans. Bacterial adhesion generally increased over time, though this pattern was influenced by the type of alloy and the bacteria present (p<0.001). In a multiple linear regression, the principal predictor of adhesion was bacterial hydrophobicity (p<0.001), followed by time (p<0.001); alloy surface characteristics had a low influence.

Streptococcus salivarius as an Important Factor in Dental Biofilm Homeostasis: Influence on Streptococcus mutans and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in Mixed Biofilm

A disturbed balance within the dental biofilm can result in the dominance of cariogenic and periodontopathogenic species and disease development. Due to the failure of pharmacological treatment of biofilm infection, a preventive approach to promoting healthy oral microbiota is necessary. This study analyzed the influence of Streptococcus salivarius K12 on the development of a multispecies biofilm composed of Streptococcus mutans, S. oralis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Four different materials were used: hydroxyapatite, dentin and two dense polytetrafluoroethylene (d-PTFE) membranes. Total bacteria, individual species and their proportions in the mixed biofilm were quantified. A qualitative analysis of the mixed biofilm was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The results showed that in the presence of S. salivarius K 12 in the initial stage of biofilm development, the proportion of S. mutans was reduced, which resulted in the inhibition of microcolony development and the complex three-dimensional structure of the biofilm. In the mature biofilm, a significantly lower proportion of the periodontopathogenic species A. actinomycetemcomitans was found in the salivarius biofilm. Our results show that S. salivarius K 12 can inhibit the growth of pathogens in the dental biofilm and help maintain the physiological balance in the oral microbiome.

High-Antimicrobial Gallium-Doped Zinc Oxide Thin Films on Bio-Based Poly(Ethylene Furanoate) Substrates for Food Packaging Application

Thin films of gallium-doped zinc oxide (GZO), with a thickness of around fifty nanometers were deposited on bio-based poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) substrates by radio-frequency sputtering. By optimizing the Ga concentration in the target, the optics, water vapor barrier and antibacterial properties of PEF/GZO composite films can be adjusted. The highest visible light transmittance of the samples was around 85.1%. Furthermore, by introducing some GZO films with typical concentrations, the water vapor barrier and antibacterial properties of PEF films were improved. The optimized water vapor permeability of PEF/GZO composite film was 5.3 × 10^-12 g·m/m²·s·Pa, and the highest antibacterial rate can reach 99.85% after 4 h. By XPS analysis, the antibacterial mechanism in the samples is envisaged to be mainly due cytotoxicity of Ga ions. The above results indicate that PEF/GZO films have great potential in the field of antibacterial food packaging.

Structure-Based Design of Dual Bactericidal and Bacteria-Releasing Nanosurfaces

Here, we report synergistic nanostructured surfaces combining bactericidal and bacteria-releasing properties. A polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-block-PMMA) diblock copolymer is used to fabricate vertically oriented cylindrical PS structures ("PS nanopillars") on silicon substrates. The results demonstrate that the PS nanopillars (with a height of about 10 nm, size of about 50 nm, and spacing of about 70 nm) exhibit highly effective bactericidal and bacteria-releasing properties ("dual properties") against Escherichia coli for at least 36 h of immersion in an E. coli solution. Interestingly, the PS nanopillars coated with a thin layer (≈3 nm thick) of titanium oxide (TiO₂) ("TiO₂ nanopillars") show much improved dual properties against E. coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) compared to the PS nanopillars. Moreover, the dual properties emerge against Listeria monocytogenes (a Gram-positive bacterium). To understand the mechanisms underlying the multifaceted property of the nanopillars, coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a lipid bilayer (as a simplified model for E. coli) in contact with a substrate containing hexagonally packed hydrophilic nanopillars were performed. The MD results demonstrate that when the bacterium-substrate interaction is strong, the lipid heads adsorb onto the nanopillar surfaces, conforming the shape of a lipid bilayer to the structure/curvature of nanopillars and generating high stress concentrations within the membrane (i.e., the driving force for rupture) at the edge of the nanopillars. Membrane rupture begins with the formation of pores between nanopillars (i.e., bactericidal activity) and ultimately leads to the membrane withdrawal from the nanopillar surface (i.e., bacteria-releasing activity). In the case of Gram-positive bacteria, the adhesion area to the pillar surface is limited due to the inherent stiffness of the bacteria, creating higher stress concentrations within a bacterial cell wall. The present study provides insight into the mechanism underlying the "adhesion-mediated" multifaceted property of nanosurfaces, which is crucial for the development of next-generation antibacterial surface coatings for relevant medical applications.

Anammox-based granulation cycle for sustainable granular sludge biotechnology from mechanisms to strategies: A critical review

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granular sludge is a promising biotechnological process for treating low-carbon nitrogenous wastewater, and is featured with low energy consumption and footprint. Previous theoretical and experimental research on anammox granular sludge processes mainly focused on granulation (flocs → granules), but pay little attention to the granulation cycle including granulation and regeneration. This work reviewed the previous studies from the perspective of anammox granules lifecycle and proposed various sustainable formation mechanisms of anammox granules. By reviewing the anaerobic, aerobic, and anammox granulation mechanisms, we summarize the mechanisms of thermodynamic theory, heterogeneous growth, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)-based adhesion, quorum sensing (QS)-based regulation, biomineralization-based growth, and stratification of microorganisms to understand anammox granulation. In the regeneration process, the formation of precursors for re-granulation is explained by the mechanisms of physical crushing, quorum quenching and dispersion cue sensing. Based on the granulation cycle mechanism, the rebuilding of the normal regeneration process is considered essential to avoid granule floatation and the wash-out of granules. This comprehensive review indicates that future research on anammox granulation cycle should focus on the effects of filamentous bacteria in denitrification-anammox granulation cycle, the role of QS/ quorum quenching (QQ)-based autoinducers, development of diversified mechanisms to understand the cycle and the cycle mechanisms of stored granules.

Assessment of the Antibiofilm Performance of Chitosan-Based Surfaces in Marine Environments

Marine biofouling is a natural process often associated with biofilm formation on submerged surfaces, creating a massive economic and ecological burden. Although several antifouling paints have been used to prevent biofouling, growing ecological concerns emphasize the need to develop new and environmentally friendly antifouling approaches such as bio-based coatings. Chitosan (CS) is a natural polymer that has been widely used due to its outstanding biological properties, including non-toxicity and antimicrobial activity. This work aims to produce and characterize poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-CS surfaces with CS of different molecular weight (Mw) at different concentrations for application in marine paints. Loligo opalescens pens, a waste from the fishery industry, were used as a CS source. The antimicrobial activity of the CS and CS-functionalized surfaces was assessed against Cobetia marina, a model proteobacterium for marine biofouling. Results demonstrate that CS targets the bacterial cell membrane, and PLA-CS surfaces were able to reduce the number of culturable cells up to 68% compared to control, with this activity dependent on CS Mw. The antifouling performance was corroborated by Optical Coherence Tomography since PLA-CS surfaces reduced the biofilm thickness by up to 36%, as well as the percentage and size of biofilm empty spaces. Overall, CS coatings showed to be a promising approach to reducing biofouling in marine environments mimicked in this work, contributing to the valorization of fishing waste and encouraging further research on this topic.

Microbial Adherence to Contact Lenses and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a Model Organism for Microbial Keratitis

Microbial keratitis (MK), the infection of the cornea, is a devastating disease and the fifth leading cause of blindness and visual impairment around the world. The overwhelming majority of MK cases are linked to contact lens wear combined with factors which promote infection such as corneal abrasion, an immunocompromised state, improper contact lens use, or failing to routinely disinfect lenses after wear. Contact lens-related MK involves the adherence of microorganisms to the contact lens. Therefore, this review discusses the information currently available regarding the disease pathophysiology, the common types of microorganisms causing MK, physical and organic mechanisms of adhesion, material properties which are involved in adhesion, and current antimicrobial strategies. This review also concludes that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a model organism for the investigation of contact lens microbial adherence due to its prevalence in MK cases, its extremely robust adhesion, antimicrobial-resistant properties, and the severity of the disease it causes.

Bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate for microalgal photosynthetic biofilm to bio-remove ammonia nitrogen from high turbidity wastewater

Treatment technologies based on microalgal biofilms have an enormous potential for dealing with water pollution because they can efficiently redirect nutrients from wastewater to renewable biomass feedstock. However, poor light transmittance is caused by the high turbidity of wastewater, which hinders the commercial application of microalgal biofilm-based wastewater treatment. Here, a bifunctional substrate with lighting and biofilm support functions was constructed using a light guide plate. In a biofilm photobioreactor (bPBR) with a bifunctional lighting/supporting substrate (BL/S substrate), light can directly irradiate the biofilm to avoid attenuation by the turbid wastewater. Direct irradiation of light onto the biofilm led to a 93.0% enhancement of microalgal photoconversion efficiency when compared to that of a supporting substrate without lighting (SO substrate). Meanwhile, the maximum growth rate of the microalgal biofilm on the BL/S substrate was 8.7 g m^-2 d^-1, which was increased by 60.3%. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) from the digested wastewater contributed by the microalgal biofilm reached 22.6 mg L^-1 d^-1, which was higher than the previously reported that of NH₄⁺-N from turbid digested wastewater by the biofilms. Furthermore, the BL/S substrate can facilitate the secretion of abundant extracellular polymeric substrates, which results in the stable adhesion of the biofilm onto the BL/S substrate. The optical density of the microalgae cells at the outlet of the bPBR with BL/S substrate was below 0.1, which was 94% lower than that of the bPBR with the SO substrate. The results indicated the BL/S substrate may avoid the loss of microalgal biomass, and almost all biomass could be easily harvested from the biofilm for algae-based biomass resources. Consequently, this study can offer a promising alternative with efficient treatment technologies for wastewater with high turbidity.

Tetrazolium-Based Visually Indicating Bacteria Sensor for Colorimetric Detection of Point of Contamination

Protective equipment for detecting bacterial contamination has been in high demand with increasing interest in public health and hygiene. Herein, a fiber-based visually indicating bacteria sensor (VIBS) embedded with iodonitrotetrazolium chloride is developed for the general purpose of detecting live bacteria, and its chromogenic effectiveness is investigated for Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus. The developed color intensity is measured by the light absorption coefficient to the scattering coefficient (K/S) based on the Kubelka-Munk equation, and the colorimetric sensitivities of different membranes are examined by calculating the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ). The results demonstrate that the interactions between VIBS and bacteria depend on the wetting properties of membranes. A hydrophobic membrane shows excessive interactions at high concentrations of Gram-negative E. coli bacteria, whose cell membrane is lipophilic. The membrane blended with hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers displays linear colorimetric responses for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria strains, demonstrating a reliable sensing capability in the range of the tested bacteria concentration. This study is significant in that explorative experimentations are performed to conceive a proof of concept of a fiber-based bacteria sensor, which is readily applicable in various fields where bacteria pose a threat.

Critical Review on Nanomaterials for Enhancing Bioconversion and Bioremediation of Agricultural Wastes and Wastewater

Anaerobic digestion (AD), microalgae cultivation, and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are the major biological processes to convert organic solid wastes and wastewater in the agricultural industry into biofuels, biopower, various biochemical and fertilizer products, and meanwhile, recycle water. Various nanomaterials including nano zero valent irons (nZVIs), metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), carbon-based and multicompound nanomaterials have been studied to improve the economics and environmental sustainability of those biological processes by increasing their conversion efficiency and the quality of products, and minimizing the negative impacts of hazardous materials in the wastes. This review article presented the structures, functionalities and applications of various nanomaterials that have been studied to improve the performance of AD, microalgae cultivation, and MFCs for recycling and valorizing agricultural solid wastes and wastewater. The review also discussed the methods that have been studied to improve the performance of those nanomaterials for their applications in those biological processes.

Advances in Biochar and PGPR engineering system for hydrocarbon degradation: A promising strategy for environmental remediation

In soil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have resulted in severe environmental deterioration, compromised soil characteristics, and negatively affect all life forms, including humans. Developing appropriate and effective clean-up technology is crucial in solving the contamination issues. The traditional methods to treat PHAs contaminated soil are less effective and not ecofriendly. Bioremediation, based on bioaugmentation and biostimulation approaches, is a promising strategy for remediating contaminated soil. The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a bioaugmentation tool is an effective technique for treating hydrocarbon contaminated soil. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are group of rhizospheric bacteria that colonize the roots of plants. Biochar is a carbon-rich residue, which acts as a source of nutrients, and is also a bio-stimulating candidate to enhance the activities of oil-degrading bacteria. The application of biochar as a nutrient source to bioremediate oil-contaminated soil is a promising approach for reducing PHA contamination. Biochar induces polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) immobilization and removes the contaminants by various methods such as ion exchange electrostatic attractions and volatilization. In comparison, PGPR produce multiple types of biosurfactants to enhance the adsorption of hydrocarbons and mineralize the hydrocarbons with the conversion to less toxic substances. During the last few decades, the use of PGPR and biochar in the bioremediation of hydrocarbons-contaminated soil has gained greater importance. Therefore, developing and applying a PGPR-biochar-based remediating system can help manage hazardous PAH contaminated soil. The goal of this review paper is to (i) provide an overview of the PGPR mechanism for degradation of hydrocarbons and (ii) discuss the contaminants absorbent by biochar and its characteristics (iii) critically discuss the combined effect of PGPR and biochar for degradation of hydrocarbons by decreasing their mobility and bioavailability. The present review focuses on techniques of bioaugmentation and biostimulation based on use of PGPR and biochar in remediating the oil-contaminated soil.

From rivers to marine environments: A constantly evolving microbial community within the plastisphere

Plastics accumulate in the environment and the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most polluted sea in the world. The plastic surface is rapidly colonized by microorganisms, forming the plastisphere. Our unique sampling supplied 107 plastic pieces from 22 geographical sites from four aquatic ecosystems (river, estuary, harbor and inshore) in the south of France in order to better understand the parameters which influence biofilm composition. In parallel, 48 enrichment cultures were performed to investigate the presence of plastic degrading-bacteria in the plastisphere. In this context, we showed that the most important drivers of microbial community structure were the sampling site followed by the polymer chemical composition. The study of pathogenic genus distribution highlighted that only 11% of our plastic samples contained higher proportions of Vibrio compared to the natural environment. Finally, results of the enrichment cultures showed a selection of hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms suggesting their potential role in the plastic degradation.

Mixed bacterial consortium can hamper the efficient degradation of crude oil hydrocarbons

Crude oil degradation efficiency can be improved because of co-metabolism that exists when bacterial consortium is applied. However, because of possible vulnerability to environmental conditions and/or antagonistic interactions among members of the consortium, the degradation efficiency can be hampered. In this laboratory-based study, the biodegradation potentials of pure bacterial isolates namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain W15 (MW320658), Providencia vermicola strain W8 (MW320661) and Serratia marcescens strain W13 (MW320662) earlier isolated from crude oil-contaminated site and their consortium were evaluated using 3% crude oil-supplemented Bushnell Haas media. The efficiency was evaluated based on the viable cell count, biosurfactant analyses, percentage hydrocarbon degradation using gravimetric analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS) analysis. There was decline in the population of W13 and predominance of W15 in the consortium as the incubation period progressed. Accelerated biodegradation of the crude oil hydrocarbons through co-metabolism was not achieved with the consortium; neither was there any improved resilience nor resistance to environmental changes of strain W13. The GC-MS analyses showed that the highest degradation was produced by W15 (48.23%) compared to W8 (46.04%), W13 (45.24%) and the Consortium (28.51%). The biodegradation of the crude oil hydrocarbons by W15, W8, W13 axenic cultures and their consortium treatments demonstrated that the bacterial constituent in a consortium can influence the synergistic effect that improves bioremediation. Future research that focuses on evaluating possible improvement in bioremediation through maintenance of diversity by continuous bioaugmentation using vulnerable but efficient degraders in a consortium is necessary to further understand the application of consortia for bioremediation improvement.

How Interfacial Properties Affect Adhesion: An Analysis from the Interactions between Microalgal Cells and Solid Substrates

Microalgal biofilm, a stable community of many algal cells attached to a solid substrate, plays a significant role in the efficient accumulation of renewable energy feedstocks, wastewater treatment, and carbon reduction. The adhesion tendency of microalgal cells on solid substrates is the basis for controlling the formation and development of microalgal biofilm. To promote the adhesion of microalgal cells on solid substrates, it is necessary to clarify which surface properties have to be changed in the most critical factors affecting the adhesion. However, there have been few systematic discussions on what surface properties influence the adhesion tendency of algal cells on solid substrates. In this study, the essential principle of microalgal cell adhesion onto solid substrates was explored from the perspective of the interaction energy between microalgal cells and solid substrates. The influence of surface properties between microalgal cells and solid substrates on interaction energies was discussed via extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (eDLVO) theory and a sensitivity analysis. The results showed that surface properties, including surface potential (ξ) and surface free energy components, significantly affect the adhesion tendency of microalgal cells on different solid substrates. When the solid surface possesses positive charges (ξ > 0), reducing ξ or the electron donor components of the solid substrate (γ_s^-) is an effective measure to promote microalgal cell adhesion onto the solid substrate. When the solid surface possesses negative charges (ξ < 0), an increase in either γ_s^- or the absolute value of ξ should be avoided in the process of microalgae adhesion. Overall, this research provides a direction for the selection of solid substrates and a direction for surface modification to facilitate the adhesion tendency of microalgal cells on solid substrates under different scenarios.

Adhesion of Oral Bacteria to Commercial d-PTFE Membranes: Polymer Microstructure Makes a Difference

Bacterial contamination of the membranes used during guided bone regeneration directly influences the outcome of this procedure. In this study, we analyzed the early stages of bacterial adhesion on two commercial dense polytetrafluoroethylene (d-PTFE) membranes in order to identify microstructural features that led to different adhesion strengths. The microstructure was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The surface properties were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and surface free energy (SFE) measurements. Bacterial properties were determined using the microbial adhesion to solvents (MATS) assay, and bacterial surface free energy (SFE) was measured spectrophotometrically. The adhesion of four species of oral bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitas, and Veilonella parvula) was studied on surfaces with or without the artificial saliva coating. The results indicated that the degree of crystallinity (78.6% vs. 34.2%, with average crystallite size 50.54 nm vs. 32.86 nm) is the principal feature promoting the adhesion strength, through lower nanoscale roughness and possibly higher surface stiffness. The spherical crystallites (“warts”), observed on the surface of the highly crystalline sample, were also identified as a contributor. All bacterial species adhered better to a highly crystalline membrane (around 1 log₁₀CFU/mL difference), both with and without artificial saliva coating. Our results show that the changes in polymer microstructure result in different antimicrobial properties even for chemically identical PTFE membranes.

Quantifying the importance of plastic pollution for the dissemination of human pathogens: The challenges of choosing an appropriate 'control' material

Discarded plastic wastes in the environment are serious challenges for sustainable waste management and for the delivery of environmental and public health. Plastics in the environment become rapidly colonised by microbial biofilm, and importantly this so-called 'plastisphere' can also support, or even enrich human pathogens. The plastisphere provides a protective environment and could facilitate the increased survival, transport and dissemination of human pathogens and thus increase the likelihood of pathogens coming into contact with humans, e.g., through direct exposure at beaches or bathing waters. However, much of our understanding about the relative risks associated with human pathogens colonising environmental plastic pollution has been inferred from taxonomic identification of pathogens in the plastisphere, or laboratory experiments on the relative behaviour of plastics colonised by human pathogens. There is, therefore, a pressing need to understand whether plastics play a greater role in promoting the survival and dispersal of human pathogens within the environment compared to other substrates (either natural materials or other pollutants). In this paper, we consider all published studies that have detected human pathogenic bacteria on the surfaces of environmental plastic pollution and critically discuss the challenges of selecting an appropriate control material for plastisphere experiments. Whilst it is clear there is no 'perfect' control material for all plastisphere studies, understanding the context-specific role plastics play compared to other substrates for transferring human pathogens through the environment is important for quantifying the potential risk that colonised plastic pollution may have for environmental and public health.

The structure and assembly mechanisms of plastisphere microbial community in natural marine environment

The microbial colonization profiles on microplastics (MPs) in marine environments have recently sparked global interest. However, many studies have characterized plastisphere microbiomes without considering the ecological processes that underly microbiome assembly. Here, we carried out a three-timepoint exposure experiment at 1-, 4-, and 8-week and investigated the colonization dynamics for polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene MP pellets in natural coastal water. Using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA, we found diversity and evenness were higher (p < 0.05) in the plastisphere communities than those in seawater, and microorganisms colonizing were co-influenced by environmental factors, polymer types, and exposure duration. Functional potential and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that MP exposure enriched the xenobiotic biodegradation potential and reduced the complexity of the MP microbial network. Simultaneously, null-model analyses indicated that stochastic processes contributed a bigger role than deterministic processes in shaping plastisphere microbial community structure with dispersal limitations contributing to a greater extent to microbial succession trajectories. These results implied the plastic surface had a more important role as a raft onto which microbes attach rather than selectively recruiting plastic-specific microbial colonizers. Our work strengthened the understanding of the ecological mechanisms by which microbial community patterns are controlled during colonization by plastic-associated microbes.

Effects of Nanopillar Size and Spacing on Mechanical Perturbation and Bactericidal Killing Efficiency

Nanopatterned surfaces administer antibacterial activity through contact-induced mechanical stresses and strains, which can be modulated by changing the nanopattern's radius, spacing and height. However, due to conflicting recommendations throughout the theoretical literature with poor agreement to reported experimental trends, it remains unclear whether these key dimensions-particularly radius and spacing-should be increased or decreased to maximize bactericidal efficiency. It is shown here that a potential failure of biophysical models lies in neglecting any out-of-plane effects of nanopattern contact. To highlight this, stresses induced by a nanopattern were studied via an analytical model based on minimization of strain and adhesion energy. The in-plane (areal) and out-of-plane (contact pressure) stresses at equilibrium were derived, as well as a combined stress (von Mises), which comprises both. Contour plots were produced to illustrate which nanopatterns elicited the highest stresses over all combinations of tip radius between 0 and 100 nm and center spacing between 0 and 200 nm. Considering both the in-plane and out-of-plane stresses drastically transformed the contour plots from those when only in-plane stress was evaluated, clearly favoring small tipped, tightly packed nanopatterns. In addition, the effect of changes to radius and spacing in terms of the combined stress showed the best qualitative agreement with previous reported trends in killing efficiency. Together, the results affirm that the killing efficiency of a nanopattern can be maximized by simultaneous reduction in tip radius and increase in nanopattern packing ratio (i.e., radius/spacing). These findings provide a guide for the design of highly bactericidal nanopatterned surfaces.

Development of Chitosan-Based Surfaces to Prevent Single- and Dual-Species Biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Implantable medical devices (IMDs) are susceptible to microbial adhesion and biofilm formation, which lead to several clinical complications, including the occurrence of implant-associated infections. Polylactic acid (PLA) and its composites are currently used for the construction of IMDs. In addition, chitosan (CS) is a natural polymer that has been widely used in the medical field due to its antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties, which can be dependent on molecular weight (Mw). The present study aims to evaluate the performance of CS-based surfaces of different Mw to inhibit bacterial biofilm formation. For this purpose, CS-based surfaces were produced by dip-coating and the presence of CS and its derivatives onto PLA films, as well surface homogeneity were confirmed by contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The antimicrobial activity of the functionalized surfaces was evaluated against single- and dual-species biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Chitosan-based surfaces were able to inhibit the development of single- and dual-species biofilms by reducing the number of total, viable, culturable, and viable but nonculturable cells up to 79%, 90%, 81%, and 96%, respectively, being their activity dependent on chitosan Mw. The effect of CS-based surfaces on the inhibition of biofilm formation was corroborated by biofilm structure analysis using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), which revealed a decrease in the biovolume and thickness of the biofilm formed on CS-based surfaces compared to PLA. Overall, these results support the potential of low Mw CS for coating polymeric devices such as IMDs where the two bacteria tested are common colonizers and reduce their biofilm formation.

Unveiling the Antifouling Performance of Different Marine Surfaces and Their Effect on the Development and Structure of Cyanobacterial Biofilms

Since biofilm formation by microfoulers significantly contributes to the fouling process, it is important to evaluate the performance of marine surfaces to prevent biofilm formation, as well as understand their interactions with microfoulers and how these affect biofilm development and structure. In this study, the long-term performance of five surface materials—glass, perspex, polystyrene, epoxy-coated glass, and a silicone hydrogel coating—in inhibiting biofilm formation by cyanobacteria was evaluated. For this purpose, cyanobacterial biofilms were developed under controlled hydrodynamic conditions typically found in marine environments, and the biofilm cell number, wet weight, chlorophyll a content, and biofilm thickness and structure were assessed after 49 days. In order to obtain more insight into the effect of surface properties on biofilm formation, they were characterized concerning their hydrophobicity and roughness. Results demonstrated that silicone hydrogel surfaces were effective in inhibiting cyanobacterial biofilm formation. In fact, biofilms formed on these surfaces showed a lower number of biofilm cells, chlorophyll a content, biofilm thickness, and percentage and size of biofilm empty spaces compared to remaining surfaces. Additionally, our results demonstrated that the surface properties, together with the features of the fouling microorganisms, have a considerable impact on marine biofouling potential.

The association between initial adhesion and cyanobacterial biofilm development

Although laboratory assays provide valuable information about the antifouling effectiveness of marine surfaces and the dynamics of biofilm formation, they may be laborious and time-consuming. This study aimed to determine the potential of short-time adhesion assays to estimate how biofilm development may proceed. The initial adhesion and cyanobacterial biofilm formation were evaluated using glass and polymer epoxy resin surfaces under different hydrodynamic conditions and were compared using linear regression models. For initial adhesion, the polymer epoxy resin surface was significantly associated with a lower number of adhered cells compared with glass (-1.27 × 105 cells.cm-2). Likewise, the number of adhered cells was significantly lower (-1.16 × 105 cells.cm-2) at 185 than at 40 rpm. This tendency was maintained during biofilm development and was supported by the biofilm wet weight, thickness, chlorophyll a content and structure. Results indicated a significant correlation between the number of adhered and biofilm cells (r = 0.800, p < 0.001). Moreover, the number of biofilm cells on day 42 was dependent on the number of adhered cells at the end of the initial adhesion and hydrodynamic conditions (R2 = 0.795, p < 0.001). These findings demonstrate the high potential of initial adhesion assays to estimate marine biofilm development.

An automated image analysis platform for the study of weakly -adhered cells

Details of the design and implementation of an open-source platform for studying the adhesion of cells attached to solid substrata are provided. The hardware is based on a laser-cut flow channel connected to a programmable syringe pump. The software automates all aspects of the flow rate profile, data acquisition and image analysis. An example of the pelagic diatom Thalassiosira rotula adhered to poly(dimethyl siloxane) surfaces is provided. The procedure described enables the shear rate to be converted to drag force for arbitrary-shaped objects, of utility to the study of many cell species, especially ones that are obviously non-spherical. It was determined that 90% of cells are removed with the application of drag forces < 3×10-12 N, and that this value is relatively independent of the incubation time on the surface. This result is important to understand how marine species interact with polymer surfaces that are used in electrical insulator applications.

Fate and transport of enveloped viruses in indoor built spaces - through understanding vaccinia virus and surface interactions

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has reinforced the necessity of understanding and establishing baseline information on the fate and transport mechanisms of viruses under indoor environmental conditions. Mechanisms governing virus interactions in built spaces have thus far been established based on our knowledge on the interaction of inorganic particles in indoor spaces and do not include characteristics specific to viruses. Studies have explored the biological and kinetic processes of microbes' attachments on surfaces in other fields but not in the built environment. There is also extensive literature on the influence of indoor architecture on air flow, temperature profiles, and forces influencing aerosol transport. Bridging the gap between these fields will lead to the generation of novel frameworks, methodologies and know-how that can identify undiscovered pathways taken by viruses and other microbes in the built environment. Our study summarizes the assessment of the influence of surface properties on the adhesion kinetics of vaccinia virus on gold, silica, glass, and stainless-steel surfaces. We found that on gold the virus layer was more viscoelastic compared to stainless-steel. There was negligible removal of the layer from the stainless-steel surface compared to the others. The results further highlight the importance of converging different fields of research to assess the fate and transport of microbes in indoor built spaces.

Thermoresponsive Surfaces Grafted by Shrinkable Hydrogel Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) for Controlling Microalgae Cells Adhesion during Biofilm Cultivation

Microalgae is a promising candidate for reducing greenhouse gas and producing renewable biofuels. For microalgae biofilm cultivation, a strong adhesion ability of microalgae cells onto the surface is a prerequisite to resist the fluid shear stress, while strong adhesion is not of benefit to the biofilm harvesting process. To solve this dilemma, a thermoresponsive surface (TMRS) with lower critical solution temperature of 33 °C was made by grafting N-isopropylacrylamide onto a silicate glass slide. The wettability of the TMRS changed from hydrophilic (contact angle of 59.4°) to hydrophobic (contact angle of 91.6°) when the temperature rose from 15 to 35 °C, resulting in the increase of adhesion energy of the TMRS to Chlorella vulgaris cells by 135.6%. The experiments showed that the cells were more likely to attach onto the TMRS at the higher temperature of 35 °C owing to the surface microstructures generated by the hydrogel layer shrinkage, which is similar in size to the microalgae cells. And the cell coverage rate on TMRS increased by 32% compared to the original glass surface. Conversely, the cells separate easily from the TMRS at a lower temperature of 15 °C, and the cell adhesion density was reduced by 19% due to hydrogel layer swelling to a relatively flat surface.

Mechanics of Bacterial Interaction and Death on Nanopatterned Surfaces

Nanopatterned surfaces are believed to kill bacteria through physical deformation, a mechanism that has immense potential against biochemical resistance. Because of its elusive nature, this mechanism is mostly understood through biophysical modeling. Problematically, accurate descriptions of the contact mechanics and various boundary conditions involved in the bacteria-nanopattern interaction remain to be seen. This may underpin conflicting predictions, found throughout the literature, regarding two important aspects of the mechanism-that is, its critical action site and relationship with geometry. Herein, a robust computational analysis of bacteria-nanopattern interaction is performed using a three-dimensional finite element modeling that incorporates relevant continuum mechanical properties, multilayered envelope structure, and adhesion interaction conditions. The model is applied to more accurately study the elusory mechanism and its enhancement via nanopattern geometry. Additionally, micrographs of bacteria adhered on a nanopatterned cicada wing are examined to further inform and verify the major modeling predictions. Together, the results indicate that nanopatterned surfaces do not kill bacteria predominantly by rupture in between protruding pillars as previously thought. Instead, nondevelopable deformation about pillar tips is more likely to create a critical site at the pillar apex, which delivers significant in-plane strains and may locally rupture and penetrate the cell. The computational analysis also demonstrates that envelope deformation is increased by adhesion to nanopatterns with smaller pillar radii and spacing. These results further progress understanding of the mechanism of nanopatterned surfaces and help guide their design for enhanced bactericidal efficiency.

Effect of Schwertmannite Surface Modification by Surfactants on Adhesion of Acidophilic Bacteria

Bacterial cell adhesion onto mineral surfaces is important in a broad spectrum of processes, including bioweathering, bioleaching, and bacterial cell transport in the soil. Despite many research efforts, a detailed explanation is still lacking. This work investigates the role of surface-active compounds, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and pure rhamnolipid (RH), in the process of bacteria attachment on the schwertmannite surface. The surface energy was calculated based on the wettability of the tested systems, and for bacteria it was 54.8 mJ/m2, schwertmannite-SDS 54.4 mJ/m2, schwertmannite-CTAB 55.4 mJ/m2, and schwertmannite-RH 39.7 mJ/m2. The total energy of adhesion estimated based on thermodynamic data was found to be negative, suggesting favorable conditions for adhesion for all examined suspensions. However, including electrostatic interactions allowed for a more precise description of bacterial adhesion under the tested conditions. The theoretical analysis using the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) approach showed a negative value of total adsorption energy only in bacteria-mineral suspensions, where SDS and rhamnolipid were added. The calculated data were in good agreement with experimental results indicating the significance of electrostatic forces in adsorption.

Polymeric Coatings with Antimicrobial Activity: A Short Review

The actual situation of microorganisms resistant to antibiotics and pandemics caused by a virus makes research in the area of antimicrobial and antiviral materials and surfaces more urgent than ever. Several strategies can be pursued to attain such properties using different classes of materials. This review focuses on polymeric materials that are applied as coatings onto pre-existing components/parts mainly to inhibit microbial activity, but polymer surfaces with biocidal properties can be reported. Among the several approaches that can be done when addressing polymeric coatings, this review will be divided in two: antimicrobial activities due to the topographic cues, and one based on the chemistry of the surface. Some future perspectives on this topic will be given together with the conclusions of the literature survey.

A scope at antifouling strategies to prevent catheter-associated infections

The use of invasive medical devices is becoming more common nowadays, with catheters representing one of the most used medical devices. However, there is a risk of infection associated with the use of these devices, since they are made of materials that are prone to bacterial adhesion with biofilm formation, often requiring catheter removal as the only therapeutic option. Catheter-related urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are among the most common causes of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) worldwide while endotracheal intubation is responsible for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Therefore, to avoid the use of biocides due to the potential risk of bacterial resistance development, antifouling strategies aiming at the prevention of bacterial adherence and colonization of catheter surfaces represent important alternative measures. This review is focused on the main strategies that are able to modify the physical or chemical properties of biomaterials, leading to the creation of antiadhesive surfaces. The most promising approaches include coating the surfaces with hydrophilic polymers, such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(acrylamide) and poly(acrylates), betaine-based zwitterionic polymers and amphiphilic polymers or the use of bulk-modified poly(urethanes). Natural polysaccharides and its modifications with heparin, have also been used to improve hemocompatibility. Recently developed bioinspired techniques yielding very promising results in the prevention of bacterial adhesion and colonization of surfaces include slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) based on the superhydrophilic rim of the pitcher plant and the Sharklet topography inspired by the shark skin, which are potential candidates as surface-modifying approaches for biomedical devices. Concerning the potential application of most of these strategies in catheters, more in vivo studies and clinical trials are needed to assure their efficacy and safety for possible future use.

Bacterial motility enhances adhesion to oil droplets

Adhesion of bacteria to liquid-liquid interfaces can play a role in the biodegradation of dispersed hydrocarbons and in biochemical and bioprocess engineering. Whereas thermodynamic factors underpinning adhesion are well studied, the role of bacterial activity on adhesion is less explored. Here, we show that bacterial motility enhances adhesion to surfactant-decorated oil droplets dispersed in artificial sea water. Motile Halomonas titanicae adhered to hexadecane droplets stabilized with dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS) more rapidly and at greater surface densities compared to nonmotile H. titanicae, whose flagellar motion was arrested through addition of a proton uncoupler. Increasing the concentration of DOSS reduced the surface density of both motile and nonmotile bacteria as a result of the reduced interfacial tension.

Kouzani A, Mosadegh B, Gharaie S. Blood Pressure Sensors: Materials, Fabrication Methods, Performance Evaluations and Future Perspectives

Advancements in materials science and fabrication techniques have contributed to the significant growing attention to a wide variety of sensors for digital healthcare. While the progress in this area is tremendously impressive, few wearable sensors with the capability of real-time blood pressure monitoring are approved for clinical use. One of the key obstacles in the further development of wearable sensors for medical applications is the lack of comprehensive technical evaluation of sensor materials against the expected clinical performance. Here, we present an extensive review and critical analysis of various materials applied in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors. In our unique transdisciplinary approach, we studied the fundamentals of blood pressure and examined its measuring modalities while focusing on their clinical use and sensing principles to identify material functionalities. Then, we carefully reviewed various categories of functional materials utilized in sensor building blocks allowing for comparative analysis of the performance of a wide range of materials throughout the sensor operational-life cycle. Not only this provides essential data to enhance the materials' properties and optimize their performance, but also, it highlights new perspectives and provides suggestions to develop the next generation pressure sensors for clinical use.

The Travelling Particles: Investigating microplastics as possible transport vectors for multidrug resistant E. coli in the Weser estuary (Germany)

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in aquatic environments has been a long withstanding health concern, namely extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli. Given increasing reports on microplastic (MP) pollution in these environments, it has become crucial to better understand the role of MP particles as transport vectors for such multidrug-resistant bacteria. In this study, an incubation experiment was designed where particles of both synthetic and natural material (HDPE, tyre wear, and wood) were sequentially incubated at multiple sites along a salinity gradient from the Lower Weser estuary (Germany) to the offshore island Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea). Following each incubation period, particle biofilms and water samples were assessed for ESBL-producing E. coli, first by the enrichment and detection of E. coli using Fluorocult® LMX Broth followed by cultivation on CHROMAgar™ ESBL media to select for ESBL-producers. Results showed that general E. coli populations were present on the surfaces of wood particles across all sites but none were found to produce ESBLs. Additionally, neither HDPE nor tyre wear particles were found to harbour any E. coli. Conversely, ESBL-producing E. coli were present in surrounding waters from all sites, 64% of which conferred resistances against up to 3 other antibiotic groups, additional to the beta-lactam resistances intrinsic to ESBL-producers. This study provides a first look into the potential of MP to harbour and transport multidrug-resistant E. coli across different environments and the approach serves as an important precursor to further studies on other potentially harmful MP-colonizing species.

Beyond Risk: Bacterial Biofilms and Their Regulating Approaches

Bacterial biofilms are complex surface attached communities of bacteria held together by self-produced polymer matrixs mainly composed of polysaccharides, secreted proteins, and extracellular DNAs. Bacterial biofilm formation is a complex process and can be described in five main phases: (i) reversible attachment phase, where bacteria non-specifically attach to surfaces; (ii) irreversible attachment phase, which involves interaction between bacterial cells and a surface using bacterial adhesins such as fimbriae and lipopolysaccharide (LPS); (iii) production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by the resident bacterial cells; (iv) biofilm maturation phase, in which bacterial cells synthesize and release signaling molecules to sense the presence of each other, conducing to the formation of microcolony and maturation of biofilms; and (v) dispersal/detachment phase, where the bacterial cells depart biofilms and comeback to independent planktonic lifestyle. Biofilm formation is detrimental in healthcare, drinking water distribution systems, food, and marine industries, etc. As a result, current studies have been focused toward control and prevention of biofilms. In an effort to get rid of harmful biofilms, various techniques and approaches have been employed that interfere with bacterial attachment, bacterial communication systems (quorum sensing, QS), and biofilm matrixs. Biofilms, however, also offer beneficial roles in a variety of fields including applications in plant protection, bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and corrosion inhibition amongst others. Development of beneficial biofilms can be promoted through manipulation of adhesion surfaces, QS and environmental conditions. This review describes the events involved in bacterial biofilm formation, lists the negative and positive aspects associated with bacterial biofilms, elaborates the main strategies currently used to regulate establishment of harmful bacterial biofilms as well as certain strategies employed to encourage formation of beneficial bacterial biofilms, and highlights the future perspectives of bacterial biofilms.

Effect of rhamnolipid on the physicochemical properties and interaction of bacteria and fungi

Bacterial adhesion on surfaces is an essential initial step in promoting bacterial mobilization for soil bioremediation process. Modification of the cell surface is required to improve the adhesion of bacteria. The modification of physicochemical properties by rhamnolipid to Pseudomonas putida KT2442, Rhodococcus erythropolis 3586 and Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404 strains was analysed using contact angle measurements. The surface energy and total free energy of adhesion were calculated to predict the adhesion of both bacteria strains on the A. brasiliensis surface. The study of bacterial adhesion was carried out to evaluate experimental value with the theoretical results. Bacteria and fungi physicochemical properties were modified significantly when treated with rhamnolipid. The adhesion rate of P. putida improved by 16% with the addition of rhamnolipid (below 1 CMC), while the increase of rhamnolipid concentration beyond 1 CMC did not further enhance the bacterial adhesion. The addition of rhamnolipid did not affect the adhesion of R. erythropolis. A good relationship has been obtained in which water contact angle and surface energy of fungal surfaces are the major factors contributing to the bacterial adhesion. The adhesion is mainly driven by acid-base interaction. This finding provides insight to the role of physicochemical properties in controlling the bacterial adhesion on the fungal surface to enhance bacteria transport in soil bioremediation.

Water treatment residual: A critical review of its applications on pollutant removal from stormwater runoff and future perspectives

In recent years, many studies have been conducted on using different filter media in bioretention systems for stormwater runoff treatment. This critical review paper provides a comprehensive review on the current state of water treatment residual (WTR), a recycled material that can be used as bioretention filter media for removals of key stormwater runoff pollutants (especially phosphorus) and future perspectives with innovative modification on WTR applied for pathogen removal from stormwater runoff. This review paper comprised (i) a brief summary of the reported WTR characteristics, (ii) a thorough evaluation of WTR performance on major pollutants removal from stormwater runoff (iii) a discussion on phosphorus removal mechanisms by WTR applied in the stormwater runoff treatment, and (iv) a review of the future perspectives of WTR for pathogen removal and other potential practical application in the field of stormwater treatment. As outlined in this review, WTR in stormwater runoff treatment has yet to be fully explored. The possible enhancements, especially metal surface modification on WTR are reviewed to bring about the widespread use of WTR in stormwater reuse practices.

Quercetin repressed the stress response factor (sigB) and virulence genes (prfA, actA, inlA, and inlC), lower the adhesion, and biofilm development of L. monocytogenes

The present study explored the effect of quercetin on the expression of virulence genes actA, inlA, inlC, and their regulatory components, sigB and prfA, in L. monocytogenes. Furthermore, the physicochemical changes on the surface, membrane permeability, and biofilm formation of quercetin-treated bacteria were evaluated. An inhibitory dose-dependent effect of quercetin (0.1-0.8 mM) was observed on the cell attachment on stainless steel at 2 and 6 h at 37 °C. Quercetin at 0.8 mM prevented the biofilm formation on stainless steel surfaces after 6 h of incubation at 37 °C, while the untreated bacteria formed biofilms with a cell density of 5.1 Log CFU/cm². The microscopic analysis evidenced that quercetin at 0.2 mM decreased the biovolume and covered area of the attached micro-colonies. Also, sigB, prfA, inlA, inlC, and actA genes were downregulated by 7-29 times lower compared to untreated bacteria. In addition, quercetin decreased the superficial cell charge, increased the membrane permeability, and its surface hydrophobicity. These results demonstrated that quercetin prevented biofilm formation, repressed the genes of stress and virulence of L. monocytogenes and also altered the physicochemical cell properties.

An Optical Method for Quantitatively Determining the Surface Free Energy of Micro- and Nanoparticles

Surface free energy (SFE) of micro- and nanoparticles plays a crucial role in determining the hydrophobicity and wettability of the particles. To date, however, there are no easy-to-use methods for determining the SFE of particles. Here, with the application of several inexpensive, easy-to-use, and commonly available lab procedures and facilities, including particle dispersion, settling/centrifugation, pipetting, and visible-light spectroscopy, we developed a novel technique called the maximum particle dispersion (MPD) method for quantitatively determining the SFE of micro- and nanoparticles. We demonstrated the versatility and robustness of the MPD method by studying nine representative particles of various chemistries, sizes, dimensions, and morphologies. These are triethoxycaprylylsilane-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles, multiwalled carbon nanotubes, graphene nanoplatelets, molybdenum(IV) sulfide flakes, neodymium(III) oxide nanoparticles, two sizes of zeolites, poly(vinylpolypyrrolidone), and polystyrene microparticles. The SFE of these micro- and nanoparticles was found to cover a range from 21 to 36 mJ/m². These SFE values may find applications in a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including the synthesis of these nanomaterials, such as in liquid-phase exfoliation. The MPD method has the potential to be developed into a standard, low-cost, and easy-to-use method for quantitatively characterizing the SFE and hydrophobicity of particles at the micro- and nanoscale.

Determining the Surface Tension of Two-Dimensional Nanosheets by a Low-Rate Advancing Contact Angle Measurement

Because of their atomic thinness, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets need be bound to a substrate or be dispersed in material in various applications. The surface tension (ST) of a 2D nanosheet is critical for analyzing the physicochemical interactions between 2D nanosheets and other materials. To date, the determination of the ST of 2D nanosheets has relied mainly on the contact angle (CA) method. However, because of the difficulty in measuring the thermodynamically significant Young?s CA, which is the only meaningful CA that can be used to determine the ST, significant differences exist in reported STs of 2D nanosheets. In this study, we obtained such unique Young?s CAs on graphene, boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, and tungsten disulfide nanosheets by a low-rate advancing contact angle measurement using a rigorously designed experimental setup. By interpreting the CA with Neumann?s equation of state, we determined the STs of these four nanosheets to be 29.7 ? 0.6, 30.9 ? 0.7, 27.8 ? 0.7, and 29.1 ? 0.8 mJ/m², respectively. The surface energies of these 2D nanosheets were estimated to be in the range 95?120 mJ/m² by considering the contribution of ST and surface entropy. The accuracy of these determined STs was validated by the exfoliation and dispersion of 2D nanosheets in liquids with a series of STs. The study may have important implications for understanding the physicochemical interactions between 2D nanosheets and other materials and the development of 2D nanosheet-based devices.

Analyzing the effect of pH on microalgae adhesion by identifying the dominant interaction between cell and surface

Microalgae adhesion plays a critical role in developing effective photobioreactors for large-scale production of microalgae biofuel. This study focused on elucidating the influencing mechanism of liquid medium pH on microalgae adhesion by identifying the dominant interactions between cell and substratum using a criterion. Herein, the adhesion of three microalgae onto two substrata at a series of pH was observed using a flow chamber. The results indicated that the adhesion of freshwater Chlorella sp. onto PVC and glass and marine Chlorella sp. and N. oculata onto glass decreased with increasing pH, because these adhesions were dominated by the EL interaction, and the pH would influence the adhesion primarily by affecting the ζ potential of the cell and substratum. Whereas, the adhesion of marine Chlorella sp. and N. oculata onto PVC increased with increasing pH, because these adhesions were dominated by Lewis acid-base (AB) interaction, and the pH would influence the adhesion primarily by affecting the components of surface free energy of cell. The study demonstrated that the influencing mechanism of pH on adhesion can be conclusively elucidated by identifying the dominant interaction between the cell and the surface, and may have significant implications for predicting cell adhesion in various applications.

Surface Immobilization of TiO2 Nanotubes with Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Synergistically Enhances Initial Preosteoblast Adhesion and Osseointegration

Although titanium (Ti) alloys have been widely used as implant materials, the bioinertness of pristine Ti impairs their bioactivity and early osseointegration. In the present work, we prepared TiO₂ nanotubes (TNT) layer on the titanium (Ti) surface by anodic oxidation. The anodized surface was functionalized with human bone morphogenetic protein-2 coating to form the hBMP-2/TNT surface. The release behavior of hBMP-2 on the hBMP-2/TNT surface displayed a controlled and sustained pattern, compared to that on the hBMP-2/Ti surface, which showed a rapid release. In vitro cellular activity tests demonstrated that both TNT and hBMP-2/Ti surfaces, particularly the hBMP-2/TNT surface, enhanced adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of osteoblast cells. Increased cell adhesion, improved cytoskeleton organization, and immunofluorescence staining of vinculin were observed on the modified surfaces. The TNT, hBMP-2/Ti, and hBMP-2/TNT surfaces, especially the hBMP-2/TNT surface, further displayed an upregulated gene expression of adhesion and osteogenic markers vinculin, collagen type 1, osteopontin, and osteocalcin, compared to the pristine Ti surface. In vivo experiments using a rat model demonstrated that the TNT and hBMP-2/Ti surfaces, in particular the hBMP-2/TNT surface, improved osseointegration and showed a superior bone bonding ability compared to Ti. Our study revealed a synergistic role played by TiO₂ nanotubes nanotopography and hBMP-2 in promoting initial osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and osseointegration, thus suggesting a promising method for better modifying the implant surface.

Quantitative Criterion to Predict Cell Adhesion by Identifying Dominant Interaction between Microorganisms and Abiotic Surfaces

Cell adhesion is ubiquitous and plays an important role in various scientific and engineering problems. Herein, a quantitative criterion to predict cell adhesion was proposed by identifying the dominant interaction between microorganisms and abiotic surfaces. According to the criterion, the dominant interaction in cell adhesion could be identified as a Lewis acid-base (AB) interaction or electrostatic (EL) interaction via comparison of two expressions containing the electron-donor characteristics of the microorganism (γ_mv^-) and abiotic surface (γ_sv^-) and their ζ potentials (ζ_m, ζ_s). The results revealed that when dominated by the AB interaction, adhesion would decrease with increasing [Formula: see text]. However, when the EL interaction was dominant, adhesion would decrease with increasing (ζ_m + ζ_s)². We have verified the criterion based on the adhesion of microalgae, bacteria, and fungi onto various surfaces obtained via our experiments and available in literature studies. The results demonstrated that the criterion had important implications in the prediction of cell adhesion in various applications.
