Symmetrical P4 Cleavage at Cobalt: Characterization of Intermediates on the Way from P4 to Coordinated P2 Units

N-Heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene ligated half-sandwich complexes of chromium(II) and chromium(I)

The synthesis and characterization of a series of Cr(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) complexes of the type [{Cr(NHC)Cl(μ-Cl)}2] and [(Cyp)Cr(NHC)X] (Cyp = η5-C5H5, cyclopentadienyl; η5-C5Me5, pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; X = Cl, η3-C3H5; NHC = IMeMe, IiPrMe, IMes, IDipp) as well as the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene cAACMe ligated complexes [(η5-C5H5)Cr(cAACMe)X] (X = Cl, NPh2), [(η5-C9H7)Cr(cAACMe)Cl] (C9H7 = Ind, indenyl) and [(η5-C13H9)Cr(cAACMe)Cl] (C13H9 = Fl, fluorenyl) are reported. The reduction of [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)Cl] with KC8 in the presence of CO afforded the NHC ligated Cr(I) metallo-radical [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)(CO)2]. Quantum chemical calculations performed on [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)(CO)2] confirm for this complex a predominantly chromium centered radical.

Direct Comparison of Subvalent, Polycationic Group 13 Cluster Compounds: Lessons learned on Isoelectronic DMPE Substituted Gallium and Indium Tetracation Salts

The tetracationic, univalent cluster compounds [{M(dmpe)}₄ ]⁴⁺ (M=Ga, In; dmpe=bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) were synthesized as their pf salts ([pf]^- =[Al(OR^F )₄ ]^- ; R^F =C(CF₃ )₃ ). The four-membered ring in [{M(dmpe)}₄ ]⁴⁺ is slightly puckered for M=Ga and almost square planar for M=In. Yet, although structurally similar, only the gallium cluster is prevalent in solution, while the indium cluster forms temperature dependent equilibria that include even the monomeric cation [In(dmpe)]⁺ . This system is the first report of one and the same ligand inducing formation of isoelectronic and isostructural gallium/indium cluster cations. The system allows to study systematically analogies and differences with thermodynamic considerations and bonding analyses, but also to outline perspectives for bond activation using cationic, subvalent group 13 clusters.

Coordination Behavior of a P4 -Butterfly Complex towards Transition Metal Lewis Acids: Preservation versus Rearrangement

The reactivity of the P4 butterfly complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ,η1:1 -P4 )] (1, Cp'''=η5 -C5 H2 tBu3 ) towards divalent Co, Ni and Zn salts is investigated. The reaction with the bromide salts leads to [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η2:1:1 -P4 ){MBr2 }] (M=Co (2Co), Ni (2Ni), Zn (2Zn)) in which the P4 butterfly scaffold is preserved. The use of the weakly ligated Co complex [Co(NCCH3 )6 ][SbF6 ]2 , results in the formation of [{(Cp'''Fe(CO)2 )2 (μ3 ,η4:1:1 -P4 )}2 Co][SbF6 ]3 (3), which represents the second example of a homoleptic-like octaphospha-metalla-sandwich complex. The formation of the threefold positively charged complex 3 occurs via redox processes, which among others also enables the formation of [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }4 (μ5 ,η4:1:1:1:1 -P8 ){Co(CO)2 }][SbF6 ] (4), bearing a rare octaphosphabicyclo[3.3.0]octane unit as a ligand. On the other hand, the reaction with [Zn(NCCH3 )4 ][PF6 ]2 yields the spiro complex [{(Cp'''Fe(CO)2 )2 (μ3 ,η2:1:1 -P4 )}2 Zn][PF6 ]2 (5) under preservation of the initial structural motif.

C–F bond activation of perfluorinated arenes using NHC-stabilized cobalt half-sandwich complexes

A study on the reactivity of cobalt half-sandwich complexes [Cp(*)Co(NHC)(olefin)] with perfluoroarenes demonstrates that C–F activation occurs along a one-electron oxidative addition pathway.

From a P4 butterfly scaffold to cyclo- and catena-P4 units

The reactivity of [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2}2(μ,η1 : 1-P4)] (1) towards half-sandwich complexes of Ru(ii), Rh(iii), and Ir(iii) is studied. The coordination of these Lewis acids leads to a rearrangement of the P4 butterfly unit to form complexes with either an aromatic cyclo-P4R2 unit (R = Cp'''Fe(CO)2) or a catena-tetraphosphaene entity.

Fragmentation Mechanism of White Phosphorus: A Theoretical Insight into Multiple Cleavage/Formation of P-P and P-C Bonds

Molecular-level understanding of metal-mediated white phosphorus (P₄ ) activation is meaningful but challenging because of its direct relevance to the conversion of P₄ into useful organophosphorus compounds as well as the complicated and unforeseeable cleavage process of P-P bonds. The related study, however, has still rarely been achieved to date. Here, a theoretical insight into the step-by-step process of three P-P bond cleavage/four P-C bond formation for [P₃ +P₁ ]-fragmentation of P₄ mediated by lutetacyclopentadienes is reported. The unique charge-separated intermediate and the intermolecular cooperation between two lutetacyclopentadienes play a vital role in the subsequent P-P/P-C bond breaking/forming. It is found that, although the first P-C formation is involved in the assembly of the cyclo-P₃ [R₄ C₄ P₃ ]^- unit, the construction of the aromatic five-membered P₁ heterocycle [R₄ C₄ P]^- is completed prior to the cyclo-P₃ formation. The reaction mechanism has been carefully elucidated by analyses of the geometric structure, frontier molecular orbitals, bond index, and natural charge, which greatly broaden and enrich the general knowledge of the direct functionalization of P₄ .

N-Heterocyclic Silylenes as Ligands in Transition Metal Carbonyl Chemistry: Nature of Their Bonding and Supposed Innocence

A study on the reactivity of the N-heterocyclic silylene Dipp2 NHSi (1,3-bis(diisopropylphenyl)-1,3-diaza-2-silacyclopent-4-en-2-yliden) with the transition metal complexes [Ni(CO)4 ], [M(CO)6 ] (M=Cr, Mo, W), [Mn(CO)5 (Br)] and [(η5 -C5 H5 )Fe(CO)2 (I)] is reported. We demonstrate that N-heterocyclic silylenes, the higher homologues of the now ubiquitous NHC ligands, show a remarkably different behavior in coordination chemistry compared to NHC ligands. Calculations on the electronic features of these ligands revealed significant differences in the frontier orbital region which lead to some peculiarities of the coordination chemistry of silylenes, as demonstrated by the synthesis of the dinuclear, NHSi-bridged complex [{Ni(CO)2 (μ-Dipp2 NHSi)}2 ] (2), complexes [M(CO)5 (Dipp2 NHSi)] (M=Cr 3, Mo 4, W 5), [Mn(CO)3 (Dipp2 NHSi)2 (Br)] (9) and [(η5 -C5 H5 )Fe(CO)2 (Dipp2 NHSi-I)] (10). DFT calculations on several model systems [Ni(L)], [Ni(CO)3 (L)], and [W(CO)5 (L)] (L=NHC, NHSi) reveal that carbenes are typically the much better donor ligands with a larger intrinsic strength of the metal-ligand bond. The decrease going from the carbene to the silylene ligand is mainly caused by favorable electrostatic contributions for the NHC ligand to the total bond strength, whereas the orbital interactions were often found to be higher for the silylene complexes. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the contribution of σ- and π-interaction depends significantly on the system under investigation. The σ-interaction is often much weaker for the NHSi ligand compared to NHC but, interestingly, the π-interaction prevails for many NHSi complexes. For the carbonyl complexes, the NHSi ligand is the better σ-donor ligand, and contributions of π-symmetry play only a minor role for the NHC and NHSi co-ligands.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Copper, Nickel, and Cobalt

The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Mono- and dinuclear tetraphosphabutadiene ferrate anions

Reduction of [Cp^ArFe(μ-Br)]₂ (1, Cp^Ar = C₅(C₆H₄-4-Et)₅) by potassium napthalenide, followed by the addition of white phosphorus, affords [K(18-c-6){Cp^ArFe(η⁴-P₄)}] (2, 18-c-6 = [18]crown-6), which features a planar cyclo-P₄^2- ligand. The related diiron complex [Na₂(THF)₅(Cp^ArFe)₂(μ,η^4:4-P₄)] (3) was obtained by reducing 1 with sodium amalgam in the presence of P₄. Protonation of 3 affords [Na(THF)₃][(Cp^ArFe)₂(μ,η^4:4-P₄)(H)] (4), while the reaction of 3 with trimethylchlorosilane gives the nortricyclane compound P₇(SiMe₃)₃ as the main product.

Rearrangement of a P4 Butterfly Complex-The Formation of a Homoleptic Phosphorus-Iron Sandwich Complex

The versatile coordination behavior of the P₄ butterfly complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)₂ }₂ (μ,η^1:1 -P₄ )] (1, Cp'''=η⁵ -C₅ H₂^t Bu₃ ) towards different iron(II) compounds is presented. The reaction of 1 with [FeBr₂ ⋅dme] (dme=dimethoxyethane) leads to the chelate complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)₂ }₂ (μ₃ ,η^1:1:2 -P₄ ){FeBr₂ }] (2), whereas, in the reaction with [Fe(CH₃ CN)₆ ][PF₆ ]₂ , an unprecedented rearrangement of the P₄ butterfly structural motif leads to the cyclo-P₄ moiety in {(Cp'''Fe(CO)₂ )₂ (μ₃ ,η^1:1:4 -P₄ )}₂ Fe][PF₆ ]₂ (3). Complex 3 represents the first fully characterized "carbon-free" sandwich complex containing cyclo-P₄ R₂ ligands in a homoleptic-like iron-phosphorus-containing molecule. Alternatively, 2 can be transformed into 3 by halogen abstraction and subsequent coordination of 1. The additional isolated side products, [{Cp'''Fe(CO)₂ }₂ (μ₃ ,η^1:1:2 -P₄ ){Cp'''Fe(CO)}][PF₆ ] (4) and [{Cp'''Fe(CO)₂ }₂ (μ₃ ,η^1:1:4 -P₄ ){Cp'''Fe}][PF₆ ] (5), give insight into the stepwise activation of the P₄ butterfly moiety in 1.

A Planar Ti2 P2 Core Assembled by Reductive Decarbonylation of - O-C≡P and P-P Radical Coupling

The complex [(nacnac)Ti(OAr)]₂ (μ₂ :η² ,η² -P₂ ) (1) is formed via reductive decarbonylation of the phosphaethynolate ion ^- [OCP], which serves as a P atom source. Complex 1 is the first structurally characterized Group 4 transition metal P₂ complex and its structure reveals the rhombic Ti₂ P₂ core is essentially planar with short bond lengths suggesting some degree of multiple bonding character between the Ti-P and P-P sites. Computational studies of 1 provide an understanding of the Ti₂ P₂ core as well as the origin of the highly downfield ³¹ P NMR spectroscopic signal.

The Cobalt cyclo-P4 Sandwich Complex and Its Role in the Formation of Polyphosphorus Compounds

A synthetic approach to the sandwich complex [Cp′′′Co(η⁴‐P₄)] (2) containing a cyclo‐P₄ ligand as an end‐deck was developed. Complex 2 is the missing homologue in the series of first‐row cyclo‐P_n sandwich complexes, and shows a unique tendency to dimerize in solution to form two isomeric P₈ complexes [(Cp′′′Co)₂(μ,η⁴:η²:η¹‐P₈)] (3 and 4). Reactivity studies indicate that 2 and 3 react with further [Cp′′′Co] fragments to give [(Cp′′′Co)₂(μ,η²:η²‐P₂)₂] (5) and [(Cp′′′Co)₃P₈] (6), respectively. Furthermore, complexes 2, 3, and 4 thermally decompose forming 5, 6, and the P₁₂ complex [(Cp′′′Co)₃P₁₂] (7). DFT calculations on the P₄ activation process suggest a η³‐P₄ Co complex as the key intermediate in the synthesis of 2 as well as in the formation of larger polyphosphorus complexes via a unique oligomerization pathway.

A neutral tetraphosphacyclobutadiene ligand in cobalt(I) complexes

The unusual reactivity of the newly synthesized β-diketiminato cobalt(I) complexes, [(L(Dep)Co)2] (2 a, L(Dep)=CH[C(Me)N(2,6-Et2C6H3)]2) and [L(Dipp)Co⋅toluene] (2 b, L(Dipp)=CH[CHN(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3)]2), toward white phosphorus was investigated, affording the first cobalt(I) complexes [(L(Dep)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)] (3 a) and [(L(Dipp)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)] (3 b) bearing the neutral cyclo-P4 ligand with a rectangular-planar structure. The redox chemistry of 3 a and 3 b was studied by cyclic voltammetry and their chemical reduction with one molar equivalent of potassium graphite led to the isolation of [(L(Dep)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)][K(dme)4] (4 a) and [(L(Dipp)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)][K(dme)4] (4 b). Unexpectedly, the monoanionic Co2P4 core in 4 a and 4 b, respectively, contains the two-electron-reduced cyclo-P4(2-) ligand with a square-planar structure and mixed-valent cobalt(I,II) sites. The electronic structures of 3 a, 3 b, 4 a, and 4 b were elucidated by NMR and EPR spectroscopy as well as magnetic measurements and are in agreement with results of broken-symmetry DFT calculations.

Activation of white phosphorus by low-valent group 5 complexes: formation and reactivity of cyclo-P4 inverted sandwich compounds

We report the synthesis and comprehensive study of the electronic structure of a unique series of dinuclear group 5 cyclo-tetraphosphide inverted sandwich complexes. White phosphorus (P4) reacts with niobium(III) and tantalum(III) β-diketiminate (BDI) tert-butylimido complexes to produce the bridging cyclo-P4 phosphide species {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)M]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)} (1, M = Nb; 2, M = Ta) in fair yields. 1 is alternatively synthesized upon hydrogenolysis of (BDI)Nb(N(t)Bu)Me2 in the presence of P4. The trinuclear side product {[(BDI)NbN(t)Bu]3(μ-P12)} (3) is also identified. Protonation of 1 with [HOEt2][B(C6F5)4] does not occur at the phosphide ring but rather involves the BDI ligand to yield {[(BDI(#))Nb(N(t)Bu)]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}[B(C6F5)4]2 (4). The monocation and dication analogues {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)Nb]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}{B(Ar(F))4}n (5, n = 1; 6, n = 2) are both synthesized by oxidation of 1 with AgBAr(F). DFT calculations were used in combination with EPR and UV-visible spectroscopies to probe the nature of the metal-phosphorus bonding.

Exploring the potential energy surface of E₂P₄ clusters (E=Group 13 element): the quest for inverse carbon-free sandwiches

Inverse carbon-free sandwich structures with formula E2P4 (E=Al, Ga, In, Tl) have been proposed as a promising new target in main-group chemistry. Our computational exploration of their corresponding potential-energy surfaces at the S12h/TZ2P level shows that indeed stable carbon-free inverse-sandwiches can be obtained if one chooses an appropriate Group 13 element for E. The boron analogue B2P4 does not form the D(4h)-symmetric inverse-sandwich structure, but instead prefers a D(2d) structure of two perpendicular BP2 units with the formation of a double B-B bond. For the other elements of Group 13, Al-Tl, the most favorable isomer is the D(4h) inverse-sandwich structure. The preference for the D(2d) isomer for B2P4 and D(4h) for their heavier analogues has been rationalized in terms of an isomerization-energy decomposition analysis, and further corroborated by determination of aromaticity of these species.
