Versatile Peroxide Route-Based Kinetics-Controlled Coating Method to Construct Uniform Alkali Metal-Containing Fast Ionic Conductor Nanoshells

Constructing a uniform coating of alkali metal-containing fast ionic conductors is crucial for realizing multifunctional responses and functionalities. However, the uncontrolled coprecipitation of alkali and transition metal ions, stemming from their significant difference in reactivity, poses a significant challenge in pursuing homogeneous and continuous nanoshells for fast ionic conductors. Here, we report a versatile peroxide-based kinetics-controlled coating approach for constructing alkali metal-containing fast ionic conductors using LiNbO3 as a proof-of-concept. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was employed as an innovative precipitant, and the deposition kinetics could be precisely tuned by adjusting the pH value of the solution to facilitate the coprecipitation of the transition metal and ammonium/hydrogen ions. The latter could subsequently be exchanged with lithium ions and transformed into uniform LiNbO3 nanoshells after low-temperature annealing (280 °C). The obtained LiNbO3 coating layers are continuous, thickness-tunable, and exhibit significantly higher ionic conductivity, 2 orders of magnitude greater than conventional counterparts. This enhancement enables solid-state batteries with excellent cycling and rate performance. Furthermore, this method is extendable to various alkali metal-based (Li, Na, and K) fast ionic conductor nanoshells, injecting new vitality into the advanced applications of fast ionic conductors in various battery systems.

Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials: Progress in Synthesis and Application in Drug Delivery

Background: Recent developments in nanotechnology have provided efficient and promising methods for the treatment of diseases to achieve better therapeutic results and lower side effects. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials are emerging inorganic nanomaterials with excellent properties such as low toxicity and easy functionalization. TiO2 with special nanostructures can be used as delivery vehicles for drugs, genes and antigens for various therapeutic options. The exploration of TiO2-based drug delivery systems shows great promise for translating nanotechnology into clinical applications; Methods: Comprehensive data on titanium dioxide were collected from reputable online databases including PubMed, GreenMedical, Web of Science, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, and National Intellectual Property Administration; Results: In this review, we discuss the synthesis pathways and functionalization strategies of TiO2. Recent advances of TiO2 as a drug delivery system, including sustained and controlled drug release delivery systems were introduced. Rigorous long-term systematic toxicity assessment is an extremely critical step in application to the clinic, and toxicity is still a problem that needs to be closely monitored; Conclusions: Despite the great progress made in TiO2-based smart systems, there is still a great potential for development. Future research may focus on developing dual-reaction delivery systems and single-reaction delivery systems like redox and enzyme reactions. Undertaking thorough in vivo investigations is necessary prior to initiating human clinical trials. The high versatility of these smart drug delivery systems will drive the development of novel nanomedicines for personalized treatment and diagnosis of many diseases with poor prognosis.

Stöber method to amorphous metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers

The Stöber method is a widely-used sol-gel route for synthesizing amorphous SiO2 colloids and conformal coatings. However, the material systems compatible with this method are still limited. Herein, we have extended the approach to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) by mimicking the Stöber method. We introduce a general synthesis route to amorphous MOFs or CPs by making use of a base-vapor diffusion method, which allows to precisely control the growth kinetics. Twenty-four different amorphous CPs colloids were successfully synthesized by selecting 12 metal ions and 17 organic ligands. Moreover, by introducing functional nanoparticles (NPs), a conformal amorphous MOFs coating with controllable thickness can be grown on NPs to form core-shell colloids. The versatility of this amorphous coating technology was demonstrated by synthesizing over 100 core-shell composites from 20 amorphous CPs shells and over 30 different NPs. Besides, various multifunctional nanostructures, such as conformal yolk-amorphous MOF shell, core@metal oxides, and core@carbon, can be obtained through one-step transformation of the core@amorphous MOFs. This work significantly enriches the Stöber method and introduces a platform, enabling the systematic design of colloids exhibiting different level of functionality and complexity.

Hard carbon for sodium-ion batteries: progress, strategies and future perspective

Because of its abundant resources, low cost and high reversible specific capacity, hard carbon (HC) is considered as the most likely commercial anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Therefore, reasonable design and effective strategies to regulate the structure of HCs play a crucial role in promoting the development of SIBs. Herein, the progress in the preparation approaches for HC anode materials is systematically overviewed, with a special focus on the comparison between traditional fabrication methods and advanced strategies emerged in recent years in terms of their influence on performance, including preparation efficiency, initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), specific capacity and rate capability. Furthermore, the advanced strategies are categorized into two groups: those exhibiting potential for large-scale production to replace traditional methods and those presenting guidelines for achieving high-performance HC anodes from top-level design. Finally, challenges and future development prospects to achieve high-performance HC anodes are also proposed. We believe that this review will provide beneficial guidance to actualize the truly rational design of advanced HC anodes, facilitating the industrialization of SIBs and assisting in formulating design rules for developing high-end advanced electrode materials for energy storage devices.

Super-Assembled Multilayered Mesoporous TiO2 Nanorockets for Light-Powered Space-Confined Microfluidic Catalysis

In the field of sustainable chemistry, it is still a significant challenge to realize efficient light-powered space-confined catalysis and propulsion due to the limited solar absorption efficiency and the low mass and heat transfer efficiency. Here, novel semiconductor TiO2 nanorockets with asymmetric, hollow, mesoporous, and double-layer structures are successfully constructed through a facile interfacial superassembly strategy. The high concentration of defects and unique topological features improve light scattering and reduce the distance for charge migration and directed charge separation, resulting in enhanced light harvesting in the confined nanospace and resulting in enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion. The movement velocity of double-layered nanorockets can reach up to 10.5 μm s-1 under visible light, which is approximately 57 and 119% higher than that of asymmetric single-layered TiO2 and isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres, respectively. In addition, the double-layered nanorockets improve the degradation rate of the common pollutant methylene blue under sustainable visible light with a 247% rise of first-order rate constant compared to isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres. Furthermore, FEA simulations reveal and confirm the double-layered confined-space enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion mechanism.

Multifaceted chemical and bioactive features of Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2 core/shell nanoparticles biosynthesized using Beta vulgaris L. extract

Due to increasing concerns about environmental impact and toxicity, developing green and sustainable methods for nanoparticle synthesis is attracting significant interest. This work reports the successful green synthesis of silver (Ag), silver-titanium dioxide (Ag@TiO2), and silver-selenium dioxide (Ag@SeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) using Beta vulgaris L. extract. Characterization by XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDX confirmed the successful formation of uniformly distributed spherical NPs with controlled size (25 ± 4.9 nm) and desired elemental composition. All synthesized NPs and the B. vulgaris extract exhibited potent free radical scavenging activity, indicating significant antioxidant potential. However, Ag@SeO2 displayed lower hemocompatibility compared to other NPs, while Ag@SeO2 and the extract demonstrated reduced inflammation in a carrageenan-induced paw edema animal model. Interestingly, Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2 exhibited strong antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotia sclerotium, as evidenced by TEM and FTIR analyses. Generally, the findings suggest that B. vulgaris-derived NPs possess diverse biological activities with potential applications in various fields such as medicine and agriculture. Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2, in particular, warrant further investigation for their potential as novel bioactive agents.

Biomass tannic acid modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles enhance desensitization and thermal stability of energetic materials

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) had the potential to be a desensitizing material, but its inherent characteristics presented challenges for coating on energetic materials. To enhance the interfacial interactions of energetic materials and TiO2, the surface of TiO2 was modified with biomass tannic acid (TA) to prepare the core-shell (hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane) CL-20@TA-TiO2 energetic composites. Various characterization techniques were used to investigate the thermal performance, impact sensitivity, structure, and surface morphology of CL-20@TA-TiO2. The protective layer formed by the TA-TiO2 coating on the surface of CL-20, thus protecting the material from external stimulation. The results indicated that the organic-inorganic core-shell energetic composites prepared with biomass TA as the interface layer exhibited outstanding performance.

Massively Scalable Self-Assembly of Nano and Microparticle Monolayers via Aerosol Assisted Deposition

An extremely rapid process for self-assembling well-ordered, nano, and microparticle monolayers via a novel aerosolized method is presented. The novel technique can reach monolayer self-assembly rates as high as 268 cm2 min-1 from a single aerosolizing source and methods to reach faster monolayer self-assembly rates are outlined. A new physical mechanism describing the self-assembly process is presented and new insights enabling high-efficiency nanoparticle monolayer self-assembly are developed. In addition, well-ordered monolayer arrays from particles of various sizes, surface functionality, and materials are fabricated. This new technique enables a 93× increase in monolayer self-assembly rates compared to the current state of the art and has the potential to provide an extremely low-cost option for submicron nanomanufacturing.

Super-assembly platform for diverse nanoparticles with tunable topological architectures and surface morphologies

Self-assembly leveraged by nature enables the sophisticated generation of a wide range of nanoparticles (NPs) with rich architectures and morphologies. However, existing artificial self-assembly platforms largely only allow for the fabrication of single type of NPs with limited structures, due to their inability to define interfacial interaction between seeds and growth materials, which is critically important to gain controllable growth patterns of the grown materials on the seeds' surface. Here, we report a versatile super-assembly platform that shows the capabilities to fabricate diverse NPs with tunable topological architectures and surface morphologies, e.g., molecular-like NPs, hollow asymmetric NPs, patchy NPs, etc. We unprecedentedly discovered the powerful functions of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which enable us to well define interfacial interaction between growth materials and seeds to achieve the controllable and tunable generation of various complex topological growth patterns. Moreover, the nucleation pattern (island nucleation or layered nucleation) of the patches can be thermodynamically modulated via the polarity of the solvent, while the number and size of the patches can be kinetically tuned by the ratio of polystyrene (PS), precursor, and catalyst. Interestingly, the hollow NPs can be generated by single-one processing step in our platform, unlike the multiple steps laboriously and widely employed by previously reported fabrication platforms. In addition, we demonstrate that our annealed NPs can not only selectively reflect visible light, and show well-controlled colors from gray, blue, to green, but also exhibit excellent photothermal conversion performances with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 68.7% that are superior to currently routinely reported of 40%. This super-assembly platform can serve as a powerful toolset to sophisticatedly create varied NPs with tunable hierarchical architectures and controllable surface morphologies, which would significantly benefit the development of drug delivery, nanomaterial assembly, nano pigments, nanoreactors, and beyond.

Fabrication of Fe3O4 core-TiO2/mesoSiO2 and Fe3O4 core-mesoSiO2/TiO2 Double Shell Nanoparticles for Methylene Blue Adsorption: Kinetic, Isotherms and Thermodynamic Characterization

Herein, Fe3O4 core-TiO2/mesoSiO2 and Fe3O4 core-mesoSiO2/TiO2 double shell nanoparticles were prepared by first (R1) and second (R2) routes and applied for the removal of methylene blue. The reported adsorption capacities for R1-0.2, R1-0.4 and R2 samples were 128, 118 and 133 mg.g-1, respectively, which were obtained after 80 min as equilibrium contact time, and pH of 6 using a methylene blue concentration of 200 ppm. The adsorption of methylene blue using the prepared Fe3O4 core-meso SiO2/TiO2 double shell was analyzed by kinetic and isotherms models. In addition, thermodynamic investigations were applied to assess the spontaneous nature of the process. The obtained results confirmed that the pseudo-second order model is well fitted with the adsorption data and the Freundlich-isotherm assumption suggested a multilayer adsorption mechanism. In addition, results of the thermodynamic investigation indicated that ΔG° was in the range of -2.3 to -6.8 kJ/mol for R1-0.2, -2.8 to -6.3 kJ/mol for R1-0.4 and -2.0 to -5.2 kJ/mol for R2. In addition, the ΔH° and ΔS° values were found in the range of 26.4 to 36.19 kJ.mol-1 and 94.9 to 126.3 Jmol-1 K-1, respectively. These results confirm that the surfaces of Fe3O4 core-mesoSiO2/TiO2 and Fe3O4 core-TiO2/mesoSiO2 double shell exhibit a spontaneous tendency to adsorb methylene blue from the aqueous solutions. The achieved performance of Fe3O4 core-meso SiO2/TiO2 and Fe3O4 core-TiO2/meso SiO2 double shell as adsorbent for methylene blue removal will encourage future research investigations on the removal of a broad range of contaminants from wastewater.

In Vitro Safety Assessment of In-House Synthesized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles: Impact of Washing and Temperature Conditions

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been widely used in food, cosmetics, and biomedical research. However, human safety following exposure to TiO2 NPs remains to be fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro safety and toxicity of TiO2 NPs synthesized via the Stöber method under different washing and temperature conditions. TiO2 NPs were characterized by their size, shape, surface charge, surface area, crystalline pattern, and band gap. Biological studies were conducted on phagocytic (RAW 264.7) and non-phagocytic (HEK-239) cells. Results showed that washing amorphous as-prepared TiO2 NPs (T1) with ethanol while applying heat at 550 °C (T2) resulted in a reduction in the surface area and charge compared to washing with water (T3) or a higher temperature (800 °C) (T4) and influenced the formation of crystalline structures with the anatase phase in T2 and T3 and rutile/anatase mixture in T4. Biological and toxicological responses varied among TiO2 NPs. T1 was associated with significant cellular internalization and toxicity in both cell types compared to other TiO2 NPs. Furthermore, the formation of the crystalline structure induced toxicity independent of other physicochemical properties. Compared with anatase, the rutile phase (T4) reduced cellular internalization and toxicity. However, comparable levels of reactive oxygen species were generated following exposure to the different types of TiO2, indicating that toxicity is partially driven via non-oxidative pathways. TiO2 NPs were able to trigger an inflammatory response, with varying trends among the two tested cell types. Together, the findings emphasize the importance of standardizing engineered nanomaterial synthesis conditions and evaluating the associated biological and toxicological consequences arising from changes in synthesis conditions.

Surface engineering of colloidal nanoparticles

Synthesis of engineered colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) with delicate surface characteristics leads to well-defined physicochemical properties and contributes to multifunctional applications. Surface engineering of colloidal NPs can improve their stability in diverse solvents by inhibiting the interparticle attractive forces, thus providing a prerequisite for further particle manipulation, fabrication of the following materials and biological applications. During the last decades, surface engineering methods for colloidal NPs have been well-developed by numerous researchers. However, accurate control of surface properties is still an important topic. The emerging DNA/protein nanotechnology offers additional possibility of surface modification of NPs and programmable particle self-assembly. Here, we first briefly review the recent progress in surface engineering of colloidal NPs, focusing on the improved stability by grafting suitable small molecules, polymers or biological macromolecules. We then present the practical strategies for nucleic acid surface encoding of NPs and subsequent programmable assembly. Various exciting applications of these unique materials are summarized with a specific focus on the cellular uptake, bio-toxicity, imaging and diagnosis of colloidal NPs in vivo. With the growing interest in colloidal NPs in nano-biological research, we expect that this review can play an instructive role in engineering the surface properties for desired applications.

Stöber method and its nuances over the years

Some characteristics of silica-based materials, such as the control/adjustment of their physical and chemical properties, compatibility, and friendly-use synthesis methods, have held the attention of several scientific groups over the years. This condition of prominence becomes even more evident when we seek these characteristics at the micro- and/or nanoscale. Among existing methods to obtain these micro/nanomaterials, the Stöber method is the focus of this review. This method is known to enable the production of silica micro- or nanoparticles from reagents of medium-easy manipulation under mild conditions using equipment that is common in most laboratories. However, this method has many nuances that must be considered to guarantee accurate results, either in size or distribution, and to ensure result reproducibility. Thus, in this review, we discuss the effects of the primary components used in the synthesis of these materials (i.e., TEOS, ammonia, and water), as well as those of other reaction conditions, such as solvent, temperature, and ionic strength. Therefore, we discuss studies involving the synthesis and characterization of micro- and nanoparticles over the years to establish discussions between their experimental observations and proposed models. This review provides experimental observations about the synthesis of these materials, as well as discussions according to complementary and/or contradictory evidence found over the years. This review seeks to help those who intend to work with this method and provide certain key points that, in our experience, can be important to obtain desired results.

Modifying the Stöber Process: Is the Organic Solvent Indispensable?

The Stöber method is one of the most important and fundamental processes for the synthesis of inorganic (nano)materials but has the drawback of using a large amount of organic solvent. Herein, ethanol was used as an example to explore if the organic solvent in a typical Stöber method can be omitted. It was found that ethanol increases the particle size of the obtained silica spheres and aids the formation of uniform silica particles rather than forming a gel. Nevertheless, the results indicated that an organic solvent in the initial synthesis mixture is not indispensable. An initially immiscible synthesis method was discovered, which can replace the organic solvent-based Stöber method to successfully synthesize silica particles with the same size ranges as the original Stöber process without addition of organic solvents. Moreover, this process can be of further value for the extension to synthesis processes of other materials based on the Stöber process.

Highly efficient photodegradation of magnetic GO-Fe3O4@SiO2@CdS for phenanthrene and pyrene: Mechanism insight and application assessment

A novel magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS embedded graphene oxide (GO) composite was prepared for the visible-light-driven photodegradation of high ring number polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The potential application of GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS was evaluated through the photodegradation of phenanthrene and pyrene in deionized water, tap water, and lake water, respectively. It was found that GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS could remove 86.4 % of phenanthrene and 93.4 % of pyrene, suggesting its potential for the degradation of high-ring number PAHs. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that pyrene has more active sites attacked by free radicals. The photoelectrochemical measurement and quenching experiments indicate that GO can transfer photoelectrons efficiently, resulting in the crucial radicals (O₂^-, OH and ¹O₂). More importantly, the photocatalytic activity kept almost constant during five cycles, confirming the significant anti-photocorrosion of GO-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@CdS. This work provides some new insights into the removal of PAHs with high-ring numbers in the natural water environment.

Fabrication of Graphene-Based TiO2@CeO2 and CeO2@TiO2 Core-Shell Heterostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Cytotoxicity

Development of light-harvesting properties and inhibition of photogenerated charge carrier recombination are of paramount significance in the photocatalytic process. In the present work, we described the synthesis of core-shell heterostructures, which are composed of titanium oxide (TiO₂) and cerium oxide (CeO₂) deposited on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) surface as a conductive substrate. Following the synthesis of ternary rGO-CeO₂@TiO₂ and rGO-TiO₂@CeO₂ nanostructures, their photocatalytic activity was investigated toward the degradation of rhodamine B dye as an organic pollutant under UV light irradiation. The obtained structures were characterized with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy surface analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Various parameters including pH, catalyst dosage, temperature, and contact time were studied for photocatalysis optimization. Heterostructures showed considerable advantages because of their high surface area and superior photocatalytic performance. In contrast, rGO-CeO₂@TiO₂ showed the highest photocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the more effective electron-hole separation and quick suppression of charge recombination at core-shell phases. A biological assay of the prepared heterostructure was performed to determine the cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and demonstrated a very low survival rate at 7.65% of cells at the 17.5 mg mL^-1 concentration of applied photocatalyst.

Kinetics-controlled regulation for homogeneous nucleation and growth of colloidal polymer and carbon nanospheres

Size regulation of uniform polymer nanospheres (PNSs) and carbon nanospheres (CNSs) below 100 nm has been difficult and is limited by multiple factors, such as ongoing nucleation, Ostwald ripening, minimization of surface energy, and high viscosity during the nucleation and growth process. In this study, a kinetics-controlled regulation is reported for the synthesis of monodispersed PNSs and corresponding CNSs with adjustable size below 100 nm. During the synthesis of PNSs, three distinct stages including surface energy control, surface tension control and viscosity control have been observed, where the concentration of block copolymer F127 (C_F127) plays a vital role in affecting the nucleation rate of PNSs and tunes the diffusion rate of monomers and migration of particles during the nucleation and growth process. As a consequence, the size of monodisperse CNSs can be customized from 100 nm down to 41 nm with PDI below 5%.

High-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring for electrical energy storage

Dielectric capacitors with higher working voltage and power density are favorable candidates for renewable energy systems and pulsed power applications. A polymer with high breakdown strength, low dielectric loss, great scalability, and reliability is a preferred dielectric material for dielectric capacitors. However, their low dielectric constant limits the polymer to achieve satisfying energy density. Therefore, great efforts have been made to get high-energy-density polymer dielectrics. By compositional and structural tailoring, the synergic integrations of the multiple components and optimized structural design effectively improved the energy storage properties. This review presents an overview of recent advancements in the field of high-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring. The surface/interfacial engineering conducted on both microscale and macroscale for polymer dielectrics is the focus of this review. Challenges and the promising opportunities for the development of polymer dielectrics for capacitive energy storage applications are presented at the end of this review.

Process monitoring of photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene by Au-decorated Fe3O4@TiO2 nanoparticles: surface-enhanced Raman scattering method

Recently, the degradation and detection of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) capable of producing 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) for environmental and human health risks have been developed. We prepared photoresponsive Au-decorated Fe₃O₄@TiO₂ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@TiO₂-Au NPs) under sunlight simulated Xe lamp irradiation. The photodegradation process of 2,4-DNT by Fe₃O₄@TiO₂-Au NPs was successfully monitored by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Since SERS monitoring shows intrinsic information about the molecular structure, it was possible to predict the photodegradation of 2,4-DNT. The 2,4-DNT photodegradation mechanism based on two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), which provides very beneficial information for a deeper understanding of systems, has been identified. We confirmed that Fe₃O₄@TiO₂-Au NPs can be widely used in organic pollutant degradation under sunlight. Furthermore, the combination of SERS based process monitoring and 2D-COS can be a convincing analytical technique for photodegradation studies of organic pollutants.

A Novel High-Performance TiO2-x /TiO1-y Ny Coating Material for Silicon Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Protective surface coatings on Si anodes are promising for improving the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, most coating materials have severe issues, including low initial coulombic efficiency, structural fracture, morphology control, and complicated synthetic processing. In this study, a multifunctional TiO_{2- x} /TiO_{1- y} N_y (TTN) formed via a facile and scalable synthetic process is applied as a coating material for Si anodes. A thin layer of amorphous TiO₂ is uniformly coated onto Si nanoparticles by a simple sol-gel method and then converted into a two phase TiO_{2- x} /TiO_{1- y} N_y via nitridation. The lithiated TiO_2-x provides high ionic and electrical conductivity, while TiO_1-y N_y can improve mechanical strength that alleviates volume change of Si to address capacity fading issue. Owing to these synergetic advantages, TiO_{2- x} /TiO_{1- y} N_y -coated Si (Si@TTN) exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, including a high charge capacity of 1650 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 and 84% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 A g^-1 . Moreover, a significantly enhanced rate performance can be achieved at a high current density. This investigation presents a facile and effective coating material to use as the high-capacity silicon anode in the emerging Si anode technology in LIBs.

Strategies for Controlling or Releasing the Influence Due to the Volume Expansion of Silicon inside Si-C Composite Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Currently, silicon is considered among the foremost promising anode materials, due to its high capacity, abundant reserves, environmental friendliness, and low working potential. However, the huge volume changes in silicon anode materials can pulverize the material particles and result in the shedding of active materials and the continual rupturing of the solid electrolyte interface film, leading to a short cycle life and rapid capacity decay. Therefore, the practical application of silicon anode materials is hindered. However, carbon recombination may remedy this defect. In silicon/carbon composite anode materials, silicon provides ultra-high capacity, and carbon is used as a buffer, to relieve the volume expansion of silicon; thus, increasing the use of silicon-based anode materials. To ensure the future utilization of silicon as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries, this review considers the dampening effect on the volume expansion of silicon particles by the formation of carbon layers, cavities, and chemical bonds. Silicon-carbon composites are classified herein as coated core-shell structure, hollow core-shell structure, porous structure, and embedded structure. The above structures can adequately accommodate the Si volume expansion, buffer the mechanical stress, and ameliorate the interface/surface stability, with the potential for performance enhancement. Finally, a perspective on future studies on Si-C anodes is suggested. In the future, the rational design of high-capacity Si-C anodes for better lithium-ion batteries will narrow the gap between theoretical research and practical applications.

Nanobody-based label-free photoelectrochemical immunoassay for highly sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

Until now, COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is engulfing the worldwide and still ranging to date, continuing to threaten the public health. The main challenge facing COVID-19 epidemic is short of fast-response and high-efficiency methods to determine SARS-CoV-2 viral pathogens. Herein, a nanobody-based label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor has been fabricated for rapidly detecting SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. As a small-size and high-stability antibody, nanobody was directly and well immobilized with Au nanoparticles and TiO₂ spheres by the interaction. Au deposited TiO₂ nanomaterial possessed 8.5 times photoelectric performance in comparison with TiO₂ in the presence of electron donor owing to surface plasma resonance effect of Au. Based on the steric hindrance effect, this immunoassay platform realized the linear detection from 0.015 to 15000 pg mL⁻¹, and a limit of detection was low as 5 fg mL⁻¹. The label-free PEC immunoassay design provides a new idea for convenient, rapid, and efficient test of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and broadens further application of nanobody as an identification agent to specific biomarkers.

Rapid Capturing and Chemiluminescent Sensing of Programmed Death Ligand-1 Expressing Extracellular Vesicles

Cancer specific extracellular vesicles (EVs) are of significant clinical relevance, for instance programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expressing EVs (PD-L1@EVs) have been shown to be ideal biomarker for non-invasive diagnosis of cancer and can predate the response of cancer patients to anti-PD-1/PD-L-1 immunotherapy. The development of sensitive and straightforward methods for detecting PD-L1@EVs can be a vital tool for non-invasive diagnosis of cancer. Most of the contemporary methods for EVs detection have limitations such as involvement of long and EV’s loss prone isolation methods prior to detection or they have employed expensive antibodies and instruments to accomplish detection. Therefore, we designed an ultracentrifugation-free and antibody-free sensing assay for PD-L1@EV by integrating Titanium oxide (TiO2) coated magnetic beads (Fe3O4@TiO2) rapid capturing of EVs from undiluted serum with aptamers specificity and chemiluminescence (CL) sensitivity. To accomplish this we used Fe3O4@TiO2 beads to rapidly capture EVs from the undiluted patient serum and added biotin labelled PD-L1 aptamer to specifically recognize PD-L1@EVs. Later, added streptavidin-modified Alkaline phosphates (ALP) taking advantage of biotin-streptavidin strong binding. Addition of CDP-star, a chemiluminescent substrate of ALP, initiates the chemiluminiscense that was recorded using spectrophotometer. The sensing assay showed high sensitivity with limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2.584×105 EVs/mL and a wider linear correlation of CL intensity (a.u.) with the concentration of PD-L1@EVs from 105 to 108 EVs/mL. To examine the clinical utility of sensing assay we used undiluted serum samples from lung cancer patients and healthy individuals and successfully discern between healthy individuals and lung cancer patients. We are optimistic that the sensing assay can ameliorate our ability to be able to diagnose lung cancer non-invasively and can be helpful to predate the patient’s response to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy.

Gradient Hierarchically Porous Structure for Rapid Capillary-Assisted Catalysis

Synthesis of hierarchically porous structures with uniform spatial gradient and structure reinforcement effect still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of zeolite@mesoporous silica core-shell nanospheres (ZeoA@MesoS) with a gradient porous structure through a micellar dynamic assembly strategy. In this case, we find that the size of composite micelles can be dynamically changed with the increase of swelling agents, which in situ act as the building blocks for the modular assembly of gradient mesostructures. The ZeoA@MesoS nanospheres are highly dispersed in solvents with uniform micropores in the inner core and a gradient tubular mesopore shell. As a nanoreactor, such hierarchically gradient porous structures enable the capillary-directed fast mass transfer from the solutions to inner active sites. As a result, the ZeoA@MesoS catalysts deliver a fabulous catalytic yield of ∼75% on the esterification of long-chain carboxylic palmitic acids and high stability even toward water interference, which can be well trapped by the ZeoA core, pushing forward the chemical equilibrium. Moreover, a very remarkable catalytic conversion on the C-H arylation reaction of large N-methylindole is achieved (∼98%) by a Pd-immobilized ZeoA@MesoS catalyst. The water tolerance feature gives a notable enhancement of 26% in catalytic yield compared to the Pd-dendritic mesoporous silica without the zeolite core.

Kinetics-Controlled Super-Assembly of Asymmetric Porous and Hollow Carbon Nanoparticles as Light-Sensitive Smart Nanovehicles

The rational design and controllable synthesis of hollow nanoparticles with both a mesoporous shell and an asymmetric architecture are crucially desired yet still significant challenges. In this work, a kinetics-controlled interfacial super-assembly strategy is developed, which is capable of preparing asymmetric porous and hollow carbon (APHC) nanoparticles through the precise regulation of polymerization and assembly rates of two kinds of precursors. In this method, Janus resin and silica hybrid (RSH) nanoparticles are first fabricated through the kinetics-controlled competitive nucleation and assembly of two precursors. Specifically, silica nanoparticles are initially formed, and the resin nanoparticles are subsequently formed on one side of the silica nanoparticles, followed by the co-assembly of silica and resin on the other side of the silica nanoparticles. The APHC nanoparticles are finally obtained via high-temperature carbonization of RSH nanoparticles and elimination of silica. The erratic asymmetrical, hierarchical porous and hollow structure and excellent photothermal performance under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) light endow the APHC nanoparticles with the ability to serve as fuel-free nanomotors with NIR-light-driven propulsion. Upon illumination by NIR light, the photothermal effect of the APHC shell causes both self-thermophoresis and jet driving forces, which propel the APHC nanomotor. Furthermore, with the assistance of phase change materials, such APHC nanoparticles can be employed as smart vehicles that can achieve on-demand release of drugs with a 980 nm NIR laser. As a proof of concept, we apply this APHC-based therapeutic system in cancer treatment, which shows improved anticancer performance due to the synergy of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. In brief, this kinetics-controlled approach may put forward new insight into the design and synthesis of functional materials with unique structures, properties, and applications by adjusting the assembly rates of multiple precursors in a reaction system.

Interfacial Assembly and Applications of Functional Mesoporous Materials

Functional mesoporous materials have gained tremendous attention due to their distinctive properties and potential applications. In recent decades, the self-assembly of micelles and framework precursors into mesostructures on the liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, and gas-liquid interface has been explored in the construction of functional mesoporous materials with diverse compositions, morphologies, mesostructures, and pore sizes. Compared with the one-phase solution synthetic approach, the introduction of a two-phase interface in the synthetic system changes self-assembly behaviors between micelles and framework species, leading to the possibility for the on-demand fabrication of unique mesoporous architectures. In addition, controlling the interfacial tension is critical to manipulate the self-assembly process for precise synthesis. In particular, recent breakthroughs based on the concept of the "monomicelles" assembly mechanism are very promising and interesting for the synthesis of functional mesoporous materials with the precise control. In this review, we highlight the synthetic strategies, principles, and interface engineering at the macroscale, microscale, and nanoscale for oriented interfacial assembly of functional mesoporous materials over the past 10 years. The potential applications in various fields, including adsorption, separation, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, and biomedicine, are discussed. Finally, we also propose the remaining challenges, possible directions, and opportunities in this field for the future outlook.

A General Synthesis Strategy for Hollow Metal Oxide Microspheres Enabled by Gel-Assisted Precipitation

Hollow metal oxide microspheres (HMMs) have drawn enormous attention in different research fields. Reliable and scalable synthetic protocols applicable for a large variety of metal oxides are in emergent demand. Here we demonstrated that polymer hydrogel, such as the resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) one, existed as an efficient synthetic platform to build HMMs. Specifically, the RF gel forms stacked RF microspheres enlaced with its aqueous phase, where the following evaporation of the highly dispersed water leads to a gel-assisted precipitation (GAP) of the dissolved metal precursor onto the embedded polymeric solids suited for the creation of HMMs. By taking advantage of the structural features of hydrogel, this synthesis design avoids the delicate control on the usually necessitated coating process and provides a simple and effective synthetic process versatile for functional HMMs, particularly Nb₂ O₅ as a high-performance electrode material in Li-ion intercalation pseudocapacitor.

Hydrogen spillover effect induced by ascorbic acid in CdS/NiO core-shell p-n heterojunction for significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

A new variety of CdS/NiO core-shell p-n heterojunction is synthesized by in-situ chemically depositing NiO shell on single-crystal CdS nanorods for the first time. With this method, the range of NiO shell thickness can be accurately controlled within a few nanometers. The optimized CdS/NiO sample (CSN_0.5) with a NiO shell layer of 1.5 nm exhibits a highly efficient photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate of 731.7 μmol/h (corresponding to 243.9 mmol/g/h) without using co-catalyst, which is among the highest value of all the CdS-based photocatalysts. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of CSN_0.5 at 365 nm wavelength reaches 28.19%. The remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to a hydrogen spillover effect induced by ascorbic acid in CdS/NiO, which promotes the transmission of adsorbed H* from hydrogen-rich NiO (electron-poor region) to hydrogen-poor CdS (electron-rich region) where the adsorbed H* reacts in time with the photogenerated electron to produce H₂, facilitating the H₂ evolution reaction. This work provides a method to promote the photocatalytic H₂ evolution reaction by using hydrogen spillover effect.

Rapid and specific detection nanoplatform of serum exosomes for prostate cancer diagnosis

Tumor exosomes that inherit specific molecules from their parent cells are emerging as ideal biomarkers in cancer diagnostics. Most currently available exosome isolation and detection methods are time-consuming and non-specific; thus, rapid and specific exosome detection methods are needed both clinically and in research. Here, a dual-functional platform is reported composed of reversible conjunction and "off-on" signal responses. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@TiO₂ particles with high affinity were applied to capture exosomes, and model exosomes could be isolated from solution within 20 min with a capture efficiency of 91.5%. An "on-off" fluorescence response PSMA aptasensor was constructed with improved selectivity to detect tumor exosomes by recording the fluorescence intensity with λ_ex/em = 557/580 nm. The standard curve for detecting tumor exosomes with the aptasensor was calculated as y = 371.7x + 66.17, ranging from 0.05 to 1 × 10⁴ particles/μL, with R² = 0.9737, and a detection limit of 5 × 10² particles/μL in solution. This method was successfully applied to clinical samples, and the results showed better performance in distinguishing prostate cancer patients and healthy samples than the traditional nanoparticle-tracking analysis (NTA) method. This rapid and accurate detection method for prostate cancer may aid in rapid clinical diagnosis. Integrating quickly TiO₂-based isolation with sensitive and specific "on-off" detection of PCa exosomes.

TiO2 Coating Strategy for Robust Catalysis of the Metal-Organic Framework toward Energy-Efficient CO2 Capture

High energy duty restricts the application of amine-based absorption in CO2 capture and limits the achievement of carbon neutrality. Although regenerating the amine solvent with solid acid catalysts can increase energy efficiency, inactivation of the catalyst must be addressed. Here, we report a robust metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived hybrid solid acid catalyst (SO42-/ZIF-67-C@TiO2) with improved acidity for promoting amine regeneration. The TiO2 coating effectively prevented the active components stripping from the surface of the catalyst, thus prolonging its lifespan. The well-protected Co-Nx sites and protonated groups introduced onto the TiO2 surface increased the amount and rate of CO2 desorption by more than 64.5 and 153%, respectively. Consequently, the energy consumption decreased by approximately 36%. The catalyzed N-C bond rupture and proton transfer mechanisms are proposed. This work provides an effective protection strategy for robust acid catalysts, thus advancing the CO2 capture with less energy duty.

Recent advances in porous nanostructures for cancer theranostics

Porous nanomaterials with high surface area, tunable porosity, and large mesopores have recently received particular attention in cancer therapy and imaging. Introduction of additional pores to nanostructures not only endows the tunability of optoelectronic and optical features optimal for tumor treatment, but also modulates the loading capacity and controlled release of therapeutic agents. In recognition, increasing efforts have been made to fabricate various porous nanomaterials and explore their potentials in oncology applications. Thus, a systematic and comprehensive summary is necessary to overview the recent progress, especially in last ten years, on the development of various mesoporous nanomaterials for cancer treatment as theranostic agents. While outlining their individual synthetic mechanisms after a brief introduction of the structures and properties of porous nanomaterials, the current review highlighted the representative applications of three main categories of porous nanostructures (organic, inorganic, and organic-inorganic nanomaterials). In each category, the synthesis, representative examples, and interactions with tumors were further detailed. The review was concluded with deliberations on the key challenges and future outlooks of porous nanostructures in cancer theranostics.

Improved charge separation and carbon dioxide photoreduction performance of surface oxygen vacancy-enriched zinc ferrite@titanium dioxide hollow nanospheres with spatially separated cocatalysts

Here, we describe the fabrication of surface oxygen vacancy-enriched ZnFe₂O₄@TiO₂ double-shell hollow heterostructure nanospheres (ZnFe₂O₄@H-TiO_2-x) coupled with spatially separated CoO_x and Au-Cu bimetallic cocatalysts. The ZnFe₂O₄@TiO₂ heterojunction and spatially separated dual cocatalysts can significantly promote the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Combined with the unique hollow double-shell heterostructure characteristics and improved surface state properties, the hybrid nanospheres can efficiently adsorb and activate CO₂ molecules. These advantages cause the optimized catalyst to exhibit remarkably higher gas-phase photocatalytic CO₂ reduction activity than the control CoO_x/ZnFe₂O₄/Au-Cu and ZnFe₂O₄@H-TiO_2-x double-shell hollow nanospheres loaded with a single cocatalyst. Meanwhile, the Au-Cu bimetal effect boosts the CO₂ conversion rate and CH₄ selectivity. The optimized hybrid catalyst with a Au/Cu ratio of 1:1 provides a CH₄ yield of 21.39 μmol g^-1 h^-1 with 93.8% selectivity. This work provides a rational photocatalyst design to improve CO₂ conversion and CH₄ selectivity.

An Efficient Uranium Adsorption Magnetic Platform Based on Amidoxime-Functionalized Flower-like Fe3O4@TiO2 Core-Shell Microspheres

Efficient removal of uranium (U) from aqueous solutions is crucial for ecological safety. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles provide a promising strategy for radionuclide recovery and separation. However, designing and synthesizing magnetic adsorbents with high sorption capacity and selectivity, accompanied by excellent stability and reusability, remain a challenge. In this work, novel amidoxime-functionalized flower-like magnetic Fe₃O₄@TiO₂ core-shell microspheres are designed and synthesized to efficiently remove U(VI) from aqueous solutions and actual seawater. The magnetic Fe₃O₄ core facilitates easy separation by an external magnetic field, and flower-like TiO₂ nanosheets provide abundant specific surface areas and functionalization sites. The grafted amidoxime (AO) groups could function as a claw for catching uranium. The maximum adsorption capacity on U(VI) of the designed nanospheres reaches 313.6 mg·g^-1 at pH 6.0, and the adsorption efficiency is maintained at 97% after 10 cycles. In addition, the excellent selectivity of the magnetic recyclable AO-functioning Fe₃O₄@TiO₂ microspheres endows the potential of uranium extraction from seawater. The designed material provides an effective and applicable diagram for radioactive element elimination and enrichment.

Preparation of an Amidated Graphene Oxide/Sulfonated Poly Ether Ether Ketone (AGO/SPEEK) Modified Atmosphere Packaging for the Storage of Cherry Tomatoes

The shelf life of cherry tomatoes is short so that new and efficient preservation techniques or procedures are required to reduce postharvest losses. This study focused on the development of a sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) film incorporated with amidated graphene oxide (AGO), for the storage of cherry tomatoes in modified atmosphere packaging. The mechanical properties, gas permeability, and moisture permeability were subsequently tested. The evolution of attributes related to shelf life, such as gas composition, physicochemical properties, and sensory properties were also monitored during storage trials. AGO, as an inorganic filler, increases the thermal stability and mechanical properties of SPEEK-based films, while it reduces the water absorption, swelling rate, and moisture permeability. Importantly, all the AGO/SPEEK films exhibited enhanced gas permeability and selective permeability of CO₂/O₂ relative to the SPEEK film. Moreover, 0.9% (w/w) AGO/SPEEK film showed an enhanced permeability coefficient of CO₂, corresponding to an increase of 50.7%. It could further improve the selective coefficient of CO₂/O₂ to 67.1%. The results of preservation at 8 °C revealed that: 0.9% (w/w) AGO/SPEEK film was significantly effective at maintaining the quality and extending the shelf life of cherry tomatoes from 15 to 30 days, thereby suggesting the potential for applying AGO-incorporated SPEEK films for food packaging materials.

Sub-nanometric Manganous Oxide Clusters in Nitrogen Doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The greatest challenge for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries application is the development of cathode hosts to address the low conductivity, huge volume change, and shuttling effect of sulfur or lithium polysulfides (LiPs). Herein, we demonstrate a composite host to circumvent these problems by confining sub-nanometric manganous oxide clusters (MOCs) in nitrogen doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets. The atomic structure of MOCs is well-characterized and optimized via the extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Benefiting from the unique design, the assembled Li-S battery displays remarkable electrochemical performances including a high reversible capacity (990 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g^-1) and a superior cycle life (60% retention over 250 cycles at 2 A g^-1). Both the experimental results and DFT calculations demonstrate that the well-dispersed MOCs could significantly promote the chemisorption of LiPs, thus greatly improving the capacity and rate performance.

In situ SERS monitoring of photocatalysts by Au-decorated Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites: novel perspectives and insights
