{Ta12}/{Ta16} Cluster-Containing Polytantalotungstates with Remarkable Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Activity

Efficient reduction of CO2 and inhibition of hydrogen precipitation by polyoxometalate photocatalyst modified with the metal Mn

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to chemical fuels is attractive for solving both the greenhouse effect and the energy crisis, but the key challenge is to design and synthesize photocatalysts with remarkable performance under visible light irradiation. Efficient catalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR) with light is considered a promising sustainable and clean approach to solve environmental problems. Herein, we found a new photocatalyst ([Mn(en)2]6[V12B18O54(OH)6]) (abbreviated as Mn6V12) based on the modifiability of polyoxometalates, in which Mn acts as a modifying unit to efficiently reduce CO2 to CO and effectively inhibit the hydrogen precipitation reaction. This Mn modified polyoxometalate catalyst has a maximum CO generation rate of 4625.0 μmol g-1 h-1 and a maximum H2 generation rate of 499.6 μmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity of 90.3% for CO generation and 9.7% for H2 generation. This polyoxometalate photocatalyst can effectively reduce CO and inhibit the hydrogen precipitation reaction. It provides a new idea for the efficient photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR) with polyoxometalate catalysts.

Two binuclear Ni-inserted polyoxotantalates based on {NiTa10O32} units with catalytic activity

Two Ni-inserted polyoxotantalates, K5.5Na2H0.5[Ni(H2O)2{NiTa10O30(OH)2}]·21H2O (1) and K6Na4[Ni(en){NiTa10O32}]·22H2O (2, en = ethanediamine), were synthesized in this work. Crystallographic data analyses reveal that 1 and 2 have similar configurations. A minor difference between these two structures is that the {Ni(H2O)2} unit in 1 is replaced by {Ni(en)} unit in 2. Notably, the other Ni in 1 and 2 is located as a heteroatom at the center of the {Ta10} unit, which is reported in POTas for the first time. Moreover, 2 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in transesterification reactions in a preliminary exploration of the catalytic ability of the synthesized POTas.

Beyond Anion Template: Polyoxometalate as a Property Influencer in High-Nuclearity Silver Thiolate Cluster

Two 48-nuclei silver nanocages with similar structures and compositions were synthesized by using Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) BW12 and SiW11Ni as anionic templates. However, their photoluminescence and photocurrent properties showed obvious differences. These results suggest that POMs not only serve as anion templates in constructing silver clusters but also influence their properties.

Three rare-earth incorporating 6-peroxotantalo-4-selenates and catalytic activities for imidation reaction

Functionalization with belt lanthanide groups allows for the crystallization and structural characterization of homometallic selenotantalates, CsK[Ln(H2O)6Se4(TaO2)6(OH)3O18]·nH2O (Ln = Eu/Gd, n = 14 (STD-Eu, STD-Gd) and Ln = Lu, n = 12 (STD-Lu)). The basket-shaped {Se4(TaO2)6} archetype is assembled in a simple one-pot reaction of Na2SeO3 and K8[Ta6O19]·17H2O in acidic aqueous medium (pH 2) and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. This unit has been proven to be an effective precursor for the preparation of a range of new POMs containing the {Se4(TaO2)6} unit. The lanthanide derivatives STD-Eu, STD-Gd and STD-Lu have been fully characterized with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, TG analysis and PXRD in the solid state. The photoluminescence and lifetime decay behaviours of STD-Eu have been studied at room temperature, and the photoluminescence spectrum displays the characteristic emission of the Eu3+ cation. In addition, the catalytic activities of STD-Eu, STD-Gd and STD-Lu on the reaction of phthalic anhydride with phenylamines have been investigated. STD-Eu shows good catalytic activities for imidation reactions.

Chiral {Ni6PW9} Cluster-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties

A chiral three-dimensional polyoxometalate cluster-organic framework (POMCOF) H₃[(btc)Ni₆(μ₃-OH)₃(H₂O)₅(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)]·17H₂O (1, btc = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate) has been made under hydrothermal conditions in the absence of amine or chiral starting reagents. 1 shows high stability in CH₃CN/DMF (1:3), acidic, and basic solutions with the pH ranging from 2 to 12 for 5 days. The UV-vis reflectance spectra and Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that 1 could be a suitable catalyst for photocatalysis. Visible-light-driven H₂ evolution studies have demonstrated that 1 is an ecofriendly, efficient, and recyclable catalyst with a H₂ evolution rate of 1058.24 μmol h^-1g^-1. Nonlinear optical (NLO) measurement reveals that 1 exhibits a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response of about 1.4 times that of KH₂PO₄ (KDP), indicating that 1 is a potential NLO material as well.

A Polyniobotungstate-Based Hybrid for Visible-Light-Induced Phosphorylation of N-Aryl-Tetrahydroisoquinoline

A new organic-inorganic hybrid based on a Nb/W mixed-addendum polyoxometalate with the formula H₁₄[(Co(H₂O)₃)₂(C₁₀H₈N₂)₄(P₄W₃₀Nb₆O₁₂₃)]·4(C₁₀H₈N₂)·8H₂O (Co-POM) has been synthesized by the solvothermal method and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectrum, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Importantly, visible-light-absorption peaks around 525 nm for Co-POM indicated that this material should have potential in visible-light-induced organic reactions. Herein, we disclosed visible-light-promoted phosphorylation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline using Co-POM as an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst. In this procedure, diverse phosphorus reagents are compatible at room temperature and in an O₂ atmosphere, giving the corresponding products in good to excellent yields (up to 97%). Simultaneously, this heterogeneous photocatalyst can be recycled up to ten times with a negligible decrease in yield, showing outstanding sustainability and recyclability.

Incorporating highly basic polyoxometalate anions comprising Nb or Ta into nanoscale reaction fields of porous ionic crystals

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are oxide cluster anions composed of high-valence early transition metals and are widely used as catalysts. Yet base catalysis of POMs remains an ongoing challenge; group V (V, Nb, and Ta) elements form more negatively charged POMs than group VI (Mo and W) elements, and in particular, polyoxoniobates and polyoxotantalates are known to show strong basicity in solution due to the highly negative surface oxygen atoms. Herein, we report for the first time porous ionic crystals (PICs) comprising Nb or Ta. The PICs are composed of Dawson-type Nb/W or Ta/W mixed-addenda POMs with oxo-centered trinuclear Cr^III carboxylates and potassium ions as counter cations to control the crystal structure. Among the PICs, those with Nb or Ta tri-substituted POMs exhibit the highest yield (78-82%) and selectivity (99%) towards the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde and ethyl cyanoacetate (353 K, 6 h), which is a typical base-catalyzed reaction, as reusable solid catalysts, and they can also catalyze the reaction of other active methylene compounds. A detailed investigation into the crystal structures together with DFT calculations and in situ IR spectroscopy with methanol as a basic probe molecule shows that the exposure of [Nb₃O₁₃] or [Ta₃O₁₃] units with highly negative surface oxygen atoms to the pore surface of PICs is crucial to the catalytic performance. These findings based on the composition-structure-function relationships show that Nb- and Ta-containing PICs can serve as platforms for rational designing of heterogeneous base catalysts.

Synthesis, crystal structure and selected properties of K2[Ni(dien)2]{[Ni(dien)]2Ta6O19}·11 H2O

The new compound K2[Ni(dien)2]{[Ni(dien)]2Ta6O19}·11 H2O crystallized at room temperature applying a diffusion based reaction in a H2O/DMSO mixture using K8{Ta6O19}·16 H2O, Ni(NO3)2·6H2O and dien (diethylenetriamine). In the crystal structure, the Lindqvist-type anion [Ta6O19]8– is structurally expanded by two octahedrally Ni2+-centered complexes via three Ni–µ 2-O–Ta bonds thus generating the new {[Ni(dien)]2Ta6O19}4– anion. Two KO8 polyhedra share a common edge to form a K2O14 moiety, which connects the {[Ni(dien)]2Ta6O19}4– cluster shells into chains. The isolated [Ni(dien)2]2+ complexes are located in voids generated by the structural arrangement of the chains. An extended hydrogen bonding network between the different constituents generates a 3D network. The crystal water molecules can be thermally removed to form a highly crystalline dehydrated compound. Partial water uptake leads to the formation of a crystalline intermediate with a reduced unit cell volume compared to the fully hydrated sample. Water sorption experiments demonstrate that the fully dehydrated sample can be fully reconverted to the hydrated compound. The crystal field splitting parameters for the octahedrally coordinated Ni2+-centered complexes have been evaluated from an UV/Vis spectrum yielding D q = 1056 cm−1 and B = 887 cm−1.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of the Polyoxoniobate Modified with RGO and PPy

The development of high-efficiency, recyclable, and inexpensive photocatalysts for water splitting for hydrogen production is of great significance to the application of solar energy. Herein, a series of graphene-decorated polyoxoniobate photocatalysts Nb₆/PPy-RGO (Nb₆ = K₇HNb₆O₁₉, RGO = reduced graphene oxide, PPy = polypyrrole), with the bridging effect of polypyrrole were prepared through a simple one-step solvothermal method, which is the first example of polyoxoniobate-graphene-based nanocomposites. The as-fabricated photocatalyst showed a photocatalytic H₂ evolution activity without any co-catalyst. The rate of 1038 µmol g⁻¹ in 5 h under optimal condition is almost 43 times higher than that of pure K₇HNb₆O₁₉·13H₂O. The influencing factors for photocatalysts in photocatalytic hydrogen production under simulated sunlight were studied in detail and the feasible mechanism is presented in this paper. These results demonstrate that Nb₆O₁₉ acts as the main catalyst and electron donor, RGO provides active sites, and PPy acted as an electronic bridge to extend the lifetime of photo-generated carriers, which are crucial factors for photocatalytic H₂ production.

Self-assembly and lithium storage performance of a nanoscale polyoxometalate based on the {MnTa18} cluster

A nanosized Ta/W mixed addendum polyoxometalate (Cs12K3H7[MnTa18Si6W54O231]·61H2O) based on the unprecedented {MnTa18} cluster was fabricated successfully under hydrothermal conditions. An excellent electrochemical performance of this compound was found in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as an anode material. The discharge capacity was 829.9 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 in the first cycle and stable at 428.4 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles, which suggests the potential application of this new compound in LIBs.

Pt-Substituted polyoxometalate modification on the surface of low-cost TiO2 with highly efficient H2 evolution performance

In this study, Pt-substituted polyoxometalate was first modified on the surface of commercially available TiO₂, forming an efficient photocatalyst with high reactivity for hydrogen evolution. During the photocatalytic process, Pt-polyoxometalates not only increase the mobility rate of electrons but also improve the separation efficiency of photoinduced electrons and holes. After photoreduction, the in situ generated Pt⁰ species are anchored on the surface of polyoxometalate anion, which prevents further agglomeration. Then, the in situ formed Pt⁰ species and polyoxometalates synergistically promote the efficiency of photoinduced electron transfer from TiO₂ to the protons adsorbed on the Pt⁰ surface. Although the content of Pt⁰ in the nanocomposite is only 0.6%, the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate reaches 5.6 mmol g^-1 h^-1 and remains stable at 4.5 mmol g^-1 h^-1 after the continuous catalytic process. Due to the modification of TiO₂ by Pt-substituted polyoxometalate, this nanocomposite represents a practical model that possesses highly efficient photoelectric conversion performance. The presented work not only extends the family of new TiO₂-polyoxometalate-based materials but also takes a further step toward the practical application of commercial TiO₂ in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution using a polyoxometalate-based copper molecular catalyst

[Cu₅(OH)₄(H₂O)₂(A-α-SiW₉O₃₃)₂]¹⁰⁻ (1) was tested as a molecular catalyst for visible-light-driven H₂ evolution and exhibited a high TON of 718.9. Many stability studies showed that 1 could maintain its structure intact during the catalytic process.

Rational regulation of transition metals in polyoxometalate hybrids without noble metal assistance for efficient light-driven H2 production

Four new noble metal-free hybrids are reported with a maximum photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 12245.59 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, which outperform all known polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal–organic photocatalysts.

A Giant Mo/Ta/W Ternary Mixed-Addenda Polyoxometalate with Efficient Photocatalytic Activity for Primary Amine Coupling

The reactivity and properties of polyoxometalates (POMs) vary remarkably as a function of the kind of addenda atoms, so the design and synthesis of new mixed-addenda POMs is a promising approach for the further development of the POM-related areas. In the present work, the first Mo/Ta/W ternary mixed-addenda POM (NH₄)₄₁H₇[K₃(H₂O)₃(P₂W₁₅Ta₃O₆₂)₆(Mo₂O₄CH₃CO₂)₃(MoO₃)₂]·85H₂O (1), which is composed of 6 {P₂W₁₅Ta₃O₆₂} linked by 3 {Mo^V₂O₄(OOCCH₃)⁺} and 2 {Mo^VIO₃} via 18 novel Mo-O-Ta bridges has been synthesized. The precursor {P₂W₁₅Ta₃}, which has lower redox potential, is crucial for the formation of 1. The red-brown solid sample of 1 shows strong absorption in the visible region. The visible-light responsive charge transfer from benzylamine to 1 was observed experimentally. 1 was proved to be an efficient photocatalyst under simulated sunlight (AM 1.5G) radiation for the oxidative coupling of primary amines to imines using atmospheric O₂.

[Ln6O8] Cluster-Encapsulating Polyplumbites as New Polyoxometalate Members and Record Inorganic Anion-Exchange Materials for ReO4 - Sequestration

Various types of polyoxometalates (POMs) have been synthesized since the 19th century, but their assortment has been mostly limited to Groups 5 and 6 metals. Herein, a new family of POMs composed of a carbon group element as the addenda atoms with two distinct phases, LnPbOClO4-1 (Ln = Sm to Ho, Y) and LnPbOClO4-2 (Ln = Er and Tm) is reported. Both structures are built from [Ln6O8] rare-earth metal hexamers being incorporated in [Pb18O32]/[Pb12O24] polyplumbites, and unbound perchlorates as charge-balancing anions. Impressively, YPbOClO4-1 and ErPbOClO4-2 exhibit exceptional uptake capacities (434.7 and 427.7 mg g-1) toward ReO4 -, a chemical surrogate for the key radioactive fission product in the nuclear fuel cycle 99TcO4 -, which are the highest values among all inorganic anion-exchange materials reported until now. The sorption mechanism is clearly elucidated and visualized by single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation from ErPbOClO4-2 to a perrhenate-containing complex ErPbOReO4 , revealing a unique ReO4 - uptake selectivity driven by specific interaction within Pb···O-ReO3 - bonds.

Photocatalytic decolorization of three commercial dyes using a new heteropolyoxotantalate catalyst

The decolorization of commercial dyes is still a pertinent issue since these azo dyes are relatively resistant to conventional biological treatment methods. It is well known that polyoxometalates can absorb light in UV-Vis range that delivers electrons to the reducible species resulting in the decomposition of organic compounds. In this paper, we present the third heteropolyoxotantalate under conventional synthetic conditions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The compound has been thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. The polyanion incorporates two 3-peroxotantalo-2-phosphate clusters that are linked together by four oxygen bridges. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of the title compound 1a were investigated. After 270 min irradiation, about 90% of Rhodamine B (RhB) was removed in the presence of 1a while the degradation of RhB could be negligible in the absence of 1a, indicating it can be a promising catalyst candidate for decolorization of organic dyes. Also, photocatalytic experiment for hydrogen generation was studied, and the results show that the H2 evolution rate is 3383 µmol h-1 g-1 for compound 1a (100 mg) over 6 h with the corresponding turnover number of 432.

Hetero-metallic active sites coupled with strongly reductive polyoxometalate for selective photocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 conversion in water

The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added methane (CH4) has been a promising strategy for sustainable energy development, but it is challenging to trigger this reaction because of its necessary eight-electron transfer process. In this work, an efficient photocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 reduction reaction was achieved for the first time in aqueous solution by using two crystalline heterogeneous catalysts, H{[Na2K4Mn4(PO4) (H2O)4]⊂{[Mo6O12(OH)3(HPO4)3(PO4)]4[Mn6(H2O)4]}·16H2O (NENU-605) and H{[Na6CoMn3(PO4)(H2O)4]⊂{[Mo6O12(OH)3(HPO4)3(PO4)]4[Co1.5Mn4.5]}·21H2O (NENU-606). Both compounds have similar host inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) structures constructed with strong reductive {P4Mo6 V} units, homo/hetero transition metal ions (MnII/CoIIMnII) and alkali metal ions (K+ and/or Na+). It is noted that the {P4Mo6 V} cluster including the six MoV atoms served as a multi-electron donor in the case of a photocatalytic reaction, while the transition metal ions functioned as catalytically active sites for adsorbing and activating CO2 molecules. Additionally, the presence of alkali metal ions was believed to assist in the capture of more CO2 for the photocatalytic reaction. The synergistic combination of the above-mentioned components in NENU-605 and NENU-606 effectively facilitates the accomplishment of the required eight-electron transfer process for CH4 evolution. Furthermore, NENU-606 containing hetero-metallic active sites finally exhibited higher CH4 generation selectivity (85.5%) than NENU-605 (76.6%).

Inorganic–organic hybrid high-dimensional polyoxotantalates and their structural transformations triggered by water

In this work, novel dimeric polyoxotantalate (POTa) clusters {Cu(en)(Ta₆O₁₉)}₂/{Cu(enMe)(Ta₆O₁₉)}₂ were introduced as SBUs to construct a new family of extended POTa materials, including the first two 3D POTa frameworks and two 2D POTa layers.

Photochemical and electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactivity of lanthanide-functionalized polyoxotungstates

The first example of hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of lanthanide-functionalized Keggin-based polyoxotungstates under photochemical and electrochemical conditions is reported. The HER activity under homogeneous, visible light-driven conditions and under heterogeneous, electrochemical conditions depends on the type of lanthanide functionalization, so that a new class of model HER catalysts for systematic reactivity studies is now accessible.

Pristine Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Composites for Energy Storage and Conversion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of crystalline porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, have recently attracted increasing interest in the field of energy storage and conversion. Herein, recent progress of MOFs and MOF composites for energy storage and conversion applications, including photochemical and electrochemical fuel production (hydrogen production and CO₂ reduction), water oxidation, supercapacitors, and Li-based batteries (Li-ion, Li-S, and Li-O₂ batteries), is summarized. Typical development strategies (e.g., incorporation of active components, design of smart morphologies, and judicious selection of organic linkers and metal nodes) of MOFs and MOF composites for particular energy storage and conversion applications are highlighted. A broad overview of recent progress is provided, which will hopefully promote the future development of MOFs and MOF composites for advanced energy storage and conversion applications.

Self-Assembly in Polyoxometalate and Metal Coordination-Based Systems: Synthetic Approaches and Developments

Utilizing new experimental approaches and gradual understanding of the underlying chemical processes has led to advances in the self-assembly of inorganic and metal–organic compounds at a very fast pace over the last decades. Exploitation of unveiled information originating from initial experimental observations has sparked the development of new families of compounds with unique structural characteristics and functionalities. The main source of inspiration for numerous research groups originated from the implementation of the design element along with the discovery of new chemical components which can self-assemble into complex structures with wide range of sizes, topologies and functionalities. Not only do self-assembled inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems belong to families of compounds with configurable structures, but also have a vast array of physical properties which reflect the chemical information stored in the various “modular” molecular subunits. The purpose of this short review article is not the exhaustive discussion of the broad field of inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems, but the discussion of some representative examples from each category which demonstrate the implementation of new synthetic approaches and design principles.

Enhancing Hydrogen Generation Through Nanoconfinement of Sensitizers and Catalysts in a Homogeneous Supramolecular Organic Framework

Enrichment of molecular photosensitizers and catalysts in a confined nanospace is conducive for photocatalytic reactions due to improved photoexcited electron transfer from photosensitizers to catalysts. Herein, the self-assembly of a highly stable 3D supramolecular organic framework from a rigid bipyridine-derived tetrahedral monomer and cucurbit[8]uril in water, and its efficient and simultaneous intake of both [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ -based photosensitizers and various polyoxometalates, that can take place at very low loading, are reported. The enrichment substantially increases the apparent concentration of both photosensitizer and catalyst in the interior of the framework, which leads to a recyclable, homogeneous, visible light-driven photocatalytic system with 110-fold increase of the turnover number for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Dual-Excitation Polyoxometalate-Based Frameworks for One-Pot Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution and Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Dehydrogenation of the tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives coupled with hydrogen production is important for hydrogen storage applications. Herein, we formulated a new system that embedded Dawson-type polyoxometalates as efficient photosensitizers into the pores of redox-active coordination polymers for the light-driven photocatalytic oxidative Mannich reaction and hydrogen evolution. In the designed Co-POM polymer, UV light excitation gives the excited state of the Dawson-type polyoxometalate first to oxidize electron donors or substrates; the reduced form (i.e., heteropolyblue) adsorbs visible light to achieve a new excited state, which reduced the cobalt redox sites and facilitates hydrogen evolution reaction. The photosensitizer recovered to the ground state, completing the catalytic cycle. Under the optimized conditions, Co-POM enabled the hydrogen evolution and dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinoline without the presence of any other additives. The high catalytic efficiency and robustness indicated the advantages of the combining functional polyoxometalate-based catalysts and porous characters of the coordination polymers for the development of highly active heterogeneous catalysts.

A novel Ta/W mixed-addendum polyoxometalate with photocatalytic properties

An unprecedented polytantalotungstate (POTT), Cs_12.5K_4.5H[Ta₁₂Si₄W₃₇O₁₅₈]·25H₂O (1), based on the {SiW₉Ta₃O₄₀}^7- cluster was hydrothermally synthesized. A photocatalytic study revealed that 1 exhibits significant photocatalytic water splitting activity.
