Solute-Solvent Interactions in Modern Physical Organic Chemistry: Supramolecular Polymers as a Muse

Hydrogen-Bonded Fibrous Nanotubes Assembled from Trigonal Prismatic Building Blocks

In reticular chemistry, molecular building blocks are designed to create crystalline open frameworks. A key principle of reticular chemistry is that the most symmetrical networks are the likely outcomes of reactions, particularly when highly symmetrical building blocks are involved. The strategy of synthesizing low-dimensional networks aims to reduce explicitly the symmetry of the molecular building blocks. Here we report the spontaneous formation of hydrogen-bonded fibrous structures from trigonal prismatic building blocks, which were designed to form three-dimensional crystalline networks on account of their highly symmetrical structures. Utilizing different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, we identify the structures at the early stages of the assembly process in order to and understand the growth mechanism. The symmetrical molecular building blocks are incorporated preferentially in the longitudinal direction, giving rise to anisotropic hydrogen-bonded porous organic nanotubes. Entropy-driven anisotropic growth provides micrometer-scale unidirectional nanotubes with high porosity. By combining experimental evidence and theoretical modeling, we have obtained a deep understanding of the nucleation and growth processes. Our findings offer fundamental insight into the molecular design of tubular structures. The nanotubes evolve further in the transverse directions to provide extended higher-order fibrous structures [nano- and microfibers], ultimately leading to large-scale interconnected hydrogen-bonded fiber-like structures with twists and turns. Our work provides fundamental understanding and paves the way for innovative molecular designs in low-dimensional networks.

Supramolecular polymerization and bulk properties relationship in ester-functionalized N-annulated perylenediimides

The synthesis of a series of N-annulated perylenediimides (NPDIs) 1-4 with an ester group and an alkyl spacer of different length in the peripheral chains was carried out, and the influence of the side chain architecture on the self-assembly, both in solution and in the solid state, was investigated. Solution studies evidenced that the carbonyl group plays a key role in the supramolecular organization of these derivatives, changing from an H-type isodesmic polymerization (4) to a J-type cooperative process as the spacer length decreases (1-3). On the other hand, bulk assays revealed an odd-even effect that correlates with the length of the alkyl spacer. Whereas the odd-spaced derivatives (2 and 4) organize in a disordered columnar hexagonal fashion, the even-spaced ones (1 and 3) show the formation of multiple crystalline (and liquid crystalline) structures. The results presented herein highlight the importance of side chain functionalization in the design of building blocks for in-solution and bulk purposes.

Nitrophenols in the environment: An update on pretreatment and analysis techniques since 2017

Nitrophenols, a versatile intermediate, have been widely used in leather, medicine, chemical synthesis, and other fields. Because these components are widely applied, they can enter the environment through various routes, leading to many hazards and toxicities. There has been a recent surge in the development of simple, rapid, environmentally friendly, and effective techniques for determining these environmental pollutants. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress on the pretreatment and analysis methods of nitrophenols since 2017, with a focus on environmental samples. Pretreatment methods include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, dispersive extraction, and microextraction methods. Analysis methods mainly include liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, supercritical fluid chromatography. In addition, this review also discusses and compares the advantages/disadvantages and development prospects of different pretreatment and analysis methods to provide a reference for further research.

Chiral Solvent-Induced Homochiral Hierarchical Molecular Assemblies at the Liquid/Solid Interface

We herein investigate the formation of homochiral hierarchical self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) via chirality induction by the coadsorption of a chiral solvent at the liquid/graphite interface by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In a mixture of achiral solvents, 1-hexanoic acid, and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, an achiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative with three alkoxy and three hydroxy groups in an alternating manner forms chiral hierarchical triangular cluster structures through dynamic self-sorting. Enantiomorphous domains appear in equal probability. On the other hand, in chiral 2-methyl-1-hexanoic acid as a solvent, this molecule produces (i) homochiral small triangular clusters at a low solute concentration, (ii) a chirality-biased hierarchical structure consisting of triangular cluster structures with different cluster sizes at a medium concentration, and (iii) a dense structure with no chirality bias at a high concentration. We attribute the concentration-dependent degree of the chirality transmission to the number of coadsorbed solvent molecules in the SAMNs and to the difference in nucleus structure and size in the initial stage of the SAMN formation.

Investigating the effects of solvent polarity and temperature on the molecular, photophysical, and thermodynamic properties of sinapic acid using DFT and TDDFT

Sinapic acid (SA) is widely used in cosmetics, foods, and pharmaceuticals due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, antifungal, anticancer, and cardioprotective properties. However, environmental factors such as solvent polarity and temperature can influence its biological activity. This work determined how solvent polarity and temperature affected the molecular, photophysical, and thermodynamic properties of SA in gas and various solvents using semi-empirical (MP6), Hartree-Fock (HF) with the B3LYP method and a 6-311++G(d,p) basis set, and density functional theory (DFT) with various basis sets, such as 3TO-3G*, 3-21G+, 6-31G++G(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p), aug-CC-PVDZ, LanL2DZ, SDD, and DGD2VP. The results indicated that solvent polarity influences molecular and spectroscopic properties, such as bond angles, dihedral angles, bond lengths, FTIR spectra, solvation energy, dipole moments, HOMO-LUMO band gaps, chemical reactivity, and thermodynamic properties, resulting from interactions between the drug and solvent molecules. The findings suggested that increasing the temperature within the range of 100 to 1000 Kelvin leads to an increase in heat capacity, enthalpy, and entropy due to molecular vibrations, ultimately causing degradation and instability in SA. Furthermore, the results showed that SA underwent a redshift in the absorption peak (from 320.18 to 356.26 nm) and a shift in the fluorescence peak (from 381 to 429 nm) in the solvent phase compared to those in the gas phase. Overall, this study provides background knowledge on how solvent polarity and temperature affect the properties of SA molecules.

Intercage Polymerization of Postfunctionalized Phosphine Organic Prisms into Cage-Based Assemblies with Tunable Morphologies

Great effort has been dedicated to the engineering of porous organic cages (POCs) in geometry and topology. Yet, harnessing these cage-like entities as premade building units to construct infinite cage-based superstructures remains elusive. In this study, we design a type of vertex-modified phosphine organic prism by a postfunctionalized approach and use it as a ditopic cage monomer to achieve an intercage supramolecular polymerization via the synergy of metal coordination and π-π dimerization. The resulting cage-by-cage polymers can further hierarchically organize into superstructures of diverse morphologies and dimensionalities, including 1D fibers, 2D lamellae, and 3D vesicles. Control over the cosolvents is capable of well regulating their structural hierarchies and self-assembled shapes. This would pave a way for the creation of cage-based supramolecular assemblies and nanomaterials.

Structural insight into piezo-solvatochromism of Reichardt's dye

To date, accurate modelling of the solvation process is challenging, often over-simplifying the solvent-solute interactions. The interplay between the molecular arrangement associated with the solvation process and crystal nucleation has been investigated by analysis of the piezo-solvatochromic behaviour of Reichardt's dye, ET(1), in methanol, ethanol and acetone under high pressure. High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis spectroscopy reveal the impact of solute-solvent interactions on the optical properties of ET(1). The study underscores the intricate relationship between solvent properties, molecular conformation and crystal packing. The connection between liquid and solid phases emphasizes the capabilities of high-pressure methods for expanding the field of crystal engineering. The high-pressure environment allowed the determination of the crystal structures reported here that are built from organic molecules fourfold solvated with ethanol or methanol: ET(1)·4CH3OH and ET(1)·4C2H5OH·H2O. The observed piezo-solvatochromic effects highlight the potential of ET(1) in nonlinear optoelectronics and expand the application of solvatochromic chemical indicators to pressure sensors.

Pathway Selection in Temporal Evolution of Supramolecular Polymers of Ionic π-Systems: Amphiphilic Organic Solvent Dictates the Fate of Water

Understanding solvent-solute interactions is essential to designing and synthesising soft materials with tailor-made functions. Although the interaction of the solute with the solvent mixture is more complex than the single solvent medium, solvent mixtures are exciting to unfold several unforeseen phenomena in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report two unforeseen pathways observed during the hierarchical assembly of cationic perylene diimides (cPDIs) in water and amphiphilic organic solvent (AOS) mixtures. When the aqueous supramolecular polymers (SPs) of cPDIs are injected into AOS, initially kinetically trapped short SPs are formed, which gradually transform into thermodynamically stable high aspect ratio SP networks. Using various experimental and theoretical investigations, we found that this temporal evolution follows two distinct pathways depending on the nature of the water-AOS interactions. If the AOS is isopropanol (IPA), water is released from cPDIs into bulk IPA due to strong hydrogen bonding interactions, which further decreases the monomer concentration of cPDIs (Pathway-1). In the case of dioxane AOS, cPDI monomer concentration further increases as water is retained among cPDIs (Pathway-2) due to relatively weak interactions between dioxane and water. Interestingly, these two pathways are accelerated by external stimuli such as heat and mechanical agitation.

Cage-by-cage supramolecular polymerization via panel-decorated triphenylphosphine organic cage

Significant efforts have been dedicated to designing porous organic cage compounds with geometric complexity and topological diversity. However, the use of these cage molecules as premade building units for constructing infinite cage-based superstructures remains unexplored. Here, we report the use of a panel-decorated phosphine organic cage as a special monomer to achieve supramolecular polymerization, resulting in cage-by-cage noncovalent polymers through the synergy of metal-coordination and intercageπ-πdimerization. At a monomer concentration of 122 mM, the average degree of polymerization reaches 17, corresponding to a molecular weight of 26 kDa. The obtained cage-based supramolecular polymers can further hierarchically self-assemble into vesicular morphologies or one-dimensional nanofiber architectures. Selective control over the cosolvents can regulate their structural hierarchy and assembled morphology. This approach paves a new way for the construction of cage-based hierarchical assemblies and materials.

Lattice-guided assembly of optoelectronically active π-conjugated peptides on 1D van der Waals single crystals

The deployment of organic molecules in high-performance devices strongly relies on the formation of well-ordered domains, which is often complicated by the dynamic and sensitive nature of supramolecular interactions. Here, we engineered the assembly of water-processable, optoelectronic π-conjugated peptides into well-defined organic-inorganic heterointerfaced assemblies by leveraging the long-range anisotropic ordering of 1D van der Waals (vdW) crystals composed of subnanometer-thick transition metal sulfide chains (MS3; M = Nb, Ta) as assembly templates. We found that the monomers can readily form 1D supramolecular assemblies onto the underlying crystal surface, owing to the structural correspondence between the π-π interactions of the quaterthiophene (4T)-based peptide units (DDD-4T) and sulfur atom ordering along the NbS3 (100) surface. The heterointerfaced assemblies exhibited substantially red-shifted photoluminescence and enhanced visible-range photocurrent generation compared to solution-assembled films. Our results underscore the role of lattice matching in forming ordered supramolecular assemblies, offering an emergent approach to assembling organic building blocks endowed with improved physical properties.

A solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive

Ultra-low temperature resistant adhesive is highly desired yet scarce for material adhesion for the potential usage in Arctic/Antarctic or outer space exploration. Here we develop a solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive with excellent adhesion strength and organic solvent stability, wide tolerable temperature range (i.e. -196 to 55 °C), long-lasting adhesion effect ( > 60 days, -196 °C) that exceeds the classic commercial hot melt adhesives. Furthermore, combine experimental results with theoretical calculations, the strong interaction energy between polyoxometalate and polymer is the main factor for the low-temperature tolerant adhesive, possessing enhanced cohesion strength, suppressed polymer crystallization and volumetric contraction. Notably, manufacturing at scale can be easily achieved by the facile scale-up solvent-free processing, showing much potential towards practical application in Arctic/Antarctic or planetary exploration.

Supramolecular Polymerization as a Tool to Reveal the Magnetic Transition Dipole Moment of Heptazines

Heptazine derivatives have attracted significant interest due to their small S1-T1 gap, which contributes to their unique electronic and optical properties. However, the nature of the lowest excited state remains ambiguous. In the present study, we characterize the lowest optical transition of heptazine by its magnetic transition dipole moment. To measure the magnetic transition dipole moment, the flat heptazine must be chiroptically active, which is difficult to achieve for single heptazine molecules. Therefore, we used supramolecular polymerization as an approach to make homochiral stacks of heptazine derivatives. Upon formation of the supramolecular polymers, the preferred helical stacking of heptazine introduces circular polarization of absorption and fluorescence. The magnetic transition dipole moments for the S1 ← S0 and S1 → S0 are determined to be 0.35 and 0.36 Bohr magneton, respectively. These high values of magnetic transition dipole moments support the intramolecular charge transfer nature of the lowest excited state from nitrogen to carbon in heptazine and further confirm the degeneracy of S1 and T1.

Water-Regulated Evolution of Inversion, Reinversion, and Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Supramolecular Organogels Based on Glutamide-Cyanostilbene Amphiphile

Water incorporated with supramolecular building blocks in organic solvents can play a key role in the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) inversion and amplification of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we demonstrate that fine-tuning the water content regulated the assembly structure evolution and made the circular dichroism and CPL sign of the system undergo intriguing inversion, reinversion, and amplification processes based on a unique and interesting glutamide-cyanostilbene system, as supported by morphology, spectroscopic observations, and time-dependent density functional theory calculation.

Dispersion-Driven Cooperativity in Alkyl Perylene Diimide Oligomers: Insights from Density Functional Theory

The cooperative mechanism is of paramount importance in the synthesis of supramolecular polymers with desired characteristics, including molecular mass, polydispersity, and morphology. It is primarily driven by the presence of intermolecular interactions, which encompass strong hydrogen bonding, metal-ligand interactions, and dipole-dipole interactions. In this study, we utilize density functional theory and energy decomposition analysis to investigate the cooperative behavior of perylene diimide (PDI) oligomers with alkyl chains at their imide positions, which lack the previously mentioned interactions. Our systematic examination reveals that dispersion interactions originating from the alkyl side-chain substituents play an important role in promoting cooperativity within these PDIs. This influence becomes even more pronounced for alkyl chain lengths beyond hexyl groups. The energy decomposition analysis reveals that the delicate balance between dispersion energy and Pauli repulsion energy is the key driver of cooperative behavior in PDIs. Additionally, we have developed a mathematical model capable of predicting the saturated binding energies for PDI oligomers of varying sizes and alkyl chain lengths. Overall, our findings emphasize the previously undervalued significance of dispersion forces in cooperative supramolecular polymerization, enhancing our overall understanding of the cooperative mechanism.

In Situ Transformation of an Amorphous Supramolecular Coating to a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Membrane to Trigger Selective Gas Permeation

We introduce a "solution-processing-transformation" strategy, deploying solvent vapor as scaffolds, to fabricate high-quality hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) membranes. This strategy can overcome the mismatch in processing conditions and crystal growth thermodynamics faced during the facile solution processing of the membrane. The procedure includes the vapor-trigged in situ transformation of dense amorphous supramolecules to crystalline HOF-16, with HOF-11 as the transient state. The mechanism involves a vapor-activated dissolution-precipitation equilibrium shifting and hydrogen bonding-guided molecule rearrangement, elucidated through combined experimental and theoretical analysis. Upon removal of the molecular scaffolds, the resulting HOF-16 membranes showcase significant improvement in hydrogen separation performance over their amorphous counterparts and previously reported HOF membranes. The method's broad applicability is evidenced by successfully extending it to other substrates and HOF structures. This study provides a fundamental understanding of guest-induced ordered supramolecular assembly and paves the way for the advanced manufacture of high-performance HOF membranes for gas separation processes.

Self-Adaptive Aromatic Cation-π Driven Dimensional Polymorphism in Supramolecular Polymers for the Photocatalytic Oxidation and Separation of Aromatic/Cyclic Aliphatic Compounds

The phenomenon of polymorphism is ubiquitous in nature, the controlled manipulation of which not only increases our ontological understanding of nature but also facilitates the conceptualization and realization of novel functional materials. However, achieving targeted polymorphism in supramolecular assemblies (SAs) remains a formidable challenge, largely because of the constraints inherent in controlling the specific binding motifs of noncovalent interactions. Herein, we propose self-adaptive aromatic cation-π binding motifs to construct polymorphic SAs in both the solid and solution states. Using distinct discrete cation-π-cation and long-range cation-π binding motifs enables control of the self-assembly directionality of a C2h-symmetric bifunctional monomer, resulting in the successful formation of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional crystalline SAs (2D-CSA and 3D-CSA). The differences in the molecular packing of 3D-CSA compared with that of 2D-CSA significantly improve the charge separation and carrier mobility, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of thioanisole to methyl phenyl sulfoxide (yield of 99 % vs 57 %). 2D-CSA, which has a vertical extended structure with favorable stronger interaction with toluene though face-to-face cation-π interactions than methylcyclohexane, shows higher toluene/methylcyclohexane separation efficiency than 3D-CSA (96.9 % for 2D-CSA vs 56.3 % for 3D-CSA).

Ultrasensitive Solvatochirochromism of Single Benzene Chromophores

Solvents influence the structure, aggregation and folding behaviors of solvatochromic compounds. Ultrasensitive solvent mediated chiroptical response is conducive to the fabrication of molecular platform for sensing and recognition, which however, remains great challenges in conceptual or applicable design. Here we report a cysteine-based single benzene chromophore system that shows ultrasensitivity to solvents. Compared to the ratiometrically responsive systems, the chiroptical activities could be triggered or inverted depending on the substituents of chiral entities with an ultralow solvent volume fraction (<1 vol %). One drop of dipolar solvents shall significantly induce the emergence or inversion of chiroptical signals in bulky phases. Based on the experimental and computational studies, the ultrasensitivity is contributed to the intimate interplay between solvents and chiral compounds that anchors the specific chiral conformation. It illustrates that structurally simple organic compounds without aggregation or folding behaviors possess pronounced solvatochiroptical properties, which sheds light on the next-generation of chiroptical sensors and switches.

Consequences of Vibrational Strong Coupling on Supramolecular Polymerization of Porphyrins

Supramolecular polymers display interesting optoelectronic properties and, thus, deploy multiple applications based on their molecular arrangement. However, controlling supramolecular interactions to achieve a desirable molecular organization is not straightforward. Over the past decade, light-matter strong coupling has emerged as a new tool for modifying chemical and material properties. This novel approach has also been shown to alter the morphology of supramolecular organization by coupling the vibrational bands of solute and solvent to the optical modes of a Fabry-Perot cavity (vibrational strong coupling, VSC). Here, we study the effect of VSC on the supramolecular polymerization of chiral zinc-porphyrins (S-Zn) via a cooperative effect. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) measurements indicate that the elongation temperature (Te) of the supramolecular polymerization is lowered by ∼10 °C under VSC. We have also generalized this effect by exploring other supramolecular systems under strong coupling conditions. The results indicate that the solute-solvent interactions are modified under VSC, which destabilizes the nuclei of the supramolecular polymer at higher temperatures. These findings demonstrate that the VSC can indeed be used as a tool to control the energy landscape of supramolecular polymerization. Furthermore, we use this unique approach to switch between the states formed under ON- and OFF-resonance conditions, achieved by simply tuning the optical cavity in and out of resonance.

Noncovalent Catalyst-cum-Inhibitor Directed Supramolecular Pathway Selection and Asymmetry Amplification by Aggregate Cross-Nucleation

The key to any controlled supramolecular polymerization (CSP) process lies in controlling the nucleation step, which is typically achieved by sequestering monomers in a kinetically trapped state. However, kinetic traps that are shallow cannot prevent spontaneous nucleation, thus limiting the applicability of the CSP in such systems. We use a molecular additive to overcome this limitation by modifying the energy landscape of a competitive self-assembly process and increasing the kinetic stability of an otherwise short-lived trap state. The additive achieves this by simultaneously catalyzing OFF-pathway nucleation and inhibiting ON-pathway aggregation. In the process, it guides the molecular assembly exclusively toward the OFF-pathway aggregate analogue. The mechanisms of OFF-pathway catalysis and ON-pathway inhibition are elucidated. By specifically targeting the nucleation step, it was possible to achieve pathway selection at an extremely low additive-to-monomer ratio of 1:100. The generality of our approach is also demonstrated for other related molecular systems. Finally, removing the additive triggers the cross-nucleation of the ON-pathway aggregate on the surface of a less stable, OFF-pathway aggregate analogue. The resultant supramolecular polymer not only exhibits a more uniform morphology but more importantly, a marked improvement in the structural order that leads to an amplification of chiral asymmetry and a high absorption dissymmetry factor (gAbs) of ∼0.05.

SOLVENTS: From Past to Present

Technological advancements in organic chemistry cannot be imagined without solvents, an essential evil due to well-recognized safety, health, and environmental risks and yet an integral part of the value chain for almost all industrially manufactured products intended for human use. A solvent serves as an essential liquid medium for different molecules to interact and react, generating products totally different from the original reactants. Reminiscences reveal water to be the first solvent used in the art of organic chemistry. This Viewpoint attempts to capture anecdotal theories and evidence on the use of this "magic liquid" and the progressive adoption of alternative liquid solvents, which have played a pivotal role in the evolution of synthetic organic chemistry. Synthetic organic chemistry, in turn, has sought to compete with nature in mimicking complex natural product syntheses in the laboratory on miniscule time scales compared with millions of years of evolutionary processes.

Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Fibres from Chiral Phenylacetylene Monomers: Cation Induced Self-Assembly

Chiral metallo-supramolecular fibres can be easily obtained by mixing a chloroform solution of a phenylacetylene monomer (PA) that bears a chiral sulfoxide group as pendant, with different equivalents of a methanolic solution of AgClO4 . Thus, while the PA is found molecularly dissolved in chloroform, the addition of Ag+ ions induce its aggregation through the formation of an axially chiral metallo-supramolecular aggregate with high thermal stable properties. In this case, the ability of the metal ion to coordinate the PA triple bond, combined with the argentophilicity of the metal ion and the planarity of the phenylacetylene drives to the formation of a helical coordination polymer, whose P or M axial chirality is determined by the chirality of the sulfoxide used as substituent of the PA. Depending on the PA/Ag+ (mol/mol) ratio, it is possible to tune the morphology of the metallo-supramolecular aggregate from chiral fibers to chiral gel.

Three Stages of Dynamic Assembly Process of Dipeptide-Based Supramolecular Gel Revealed by In Situ Infrared Spectroscopy

The exploration of short peptide-based assembly is vital for understanding protein-misfolding-associated diseases and seeking strategies to attenuate aggregate formation. While, the molecular mechanism of their structural evolution remains poorly studied in view of the dynamic and unpredictable assembly process. Herein, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, which serves as an in situ and real-time analytical technique, was intelligently employed to investigate the mechanism of phase transition and aggregate formation during the dynamic assembly process of diphenylalanine. Combined with other spectroscopy and electron microscopy technologies, three stages of gel formation and the main driving forces in different stages were revealed. A variety of stoichiometric methods such as continuous wavelet transform, principal component analysis, and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy techniques were conducted to analyze the original time-dependent IR spectra to obtain detailed information on the changes in the amide bands and hydration layer. The microenvironment of hydrogen bonding among amide bands was significantly changed with the addition of pyridine derivatives, resulting in great differences in the properties of co-assembled gels. This work not only provides a universal analytical way to reveal the dynamic assembly process of dipeptide-based supramolecular gel but also expands their applications in supramolecular regulation and high-throughput screens in situ.

Multiple hydrogen bonding driven supramolecular architectures and their biomedical applications

Supramolecular chemistry combines the strength of molecular assembly via various molecular interactions. Hydrogen bonding facilitated self-assembly with the advantages of directionality, specificity, reversibility, and strength is a promising approach for constructing advanced supramolecules. There are still some challenges in hydrogen bonding based supramolecular polymers, such as complexity originating from tautomerism of the molecular building modules, the assembly process, and structure versatility of building blocks. In this review, examples are selected to give insights into multiple hydrogen bonding driven emerging supramolecular architectures. We focus on chiral supramolecular assemblies, multiple hydrogen bonding modules as stimuli responsive sources, interpenetrating polymer networks, multiple hydrogen bonding assisted organic frameworks, supramolecular adhesives, energy dissipators, and quantitative analysis of nano-adhesion. The applications in biomedical materials are focused with detailed examples including drug design evolution for myotonic dystrophy, molecular assembly for advanced drug delivery, an indicator displacement strategy for DNA detection, tissue engineering, and self-assembly complexes as gene delivery vectors for gene transfection. In addition, insights into the current challenges and future perspectives of this field to propel the development of multiple hydrogen bonding facilitated supramolecular materials are proposed.

Oligomer-assisted self-assembly of bisurea in organic solvent media

We report on molecular dynamics simulation evidence revealing that an oligomer additive can be used to greatly facilitate the self-assembly of a bisurea in organic solvent media, through the initial regular packing and the subsequent stiffening of the self-assembly filament. The underlying physics is attributed to the substantially reduced diffusivities of the solute and, in particular, solvent molecules, featuring a generally weakened (thermal) Brownian force under ambient conditions. Without such oligomer-induced molecular cooling-in contrast to the usual external cooling, the original solvent medium is noted to foster instead more stabilized and disordered aggregates and, in particular, it would require a temperature reduction that is practically inaccessible in order to sustain similar stiffness of the self-assembly filament. These features, in accord with recent experimental observations, highlight the open opportunity of promoting the self-assembly of small functional molecules in general solvent media without requiring substantial changes of the system temperature, as is crucial for many practical applications including the biological/biomedical ones.

Stimuli-responsive synthetic helical polymers

Synthetic dynamic helical polymers (supramolecular and covalent) and foldamers share the helix as a structural motif. Although the materials are different, these systems also share many structural properties, such as helix induction or conformational communication mechanisms. The introduction of stimuli responsive building blocks or monomer repeating units in these materials triggers conformational or structural changes, due to the presence/absence of the external stimulus, which are transmitted to the helix resulting in different effects, such as assymetry amplification, helix inversion or even changes in the helical scaffold (elongation, J/H helical aggregates). In this review, we show through selected examples how different stimuli (e.g., temperature, solvents, cations, anions, redox, chiral additives, pH or light) can alter the helical structures of dynamic helical polymers (covalent and supramolecular) and foldamers acting on the conformational composition or molecular structure of their components, which is also transmitted to the macromolecular helical structure.

Supramolecular Large Nanosheets Assembled at Air/Water Interfaces and in Solution from Amphiphilic Heptagon-Containing Nanographenes

We report the synthesis of a new set of amphiphilic saddle-shaped heptagon-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) functionalized with tetraethylene glycol chains and their self-assembly into large two-dimensional (2D) polymers. An in-depth analysis of the self-assembly mechanism at the air/water interface has been carried out, and the proposed arrangement models are in good agreement with the molecular dynamics simulations. Quite remarkably, the number and disposition of the tetraethylene glycol chains significantly influence the disposition of the PAHs at the interface and conditionate their packing under pressure. For the three compounds studied, we observed three different behaviors in which the aromatic core is parallel, perpendicular, and tilted with respect to the water surface. We also show that these curved PAHs are able to self-assemble in solution into remarkably large sheets of up to 150 μm2. These results show the relationship, within a family of curved nanographenes, between the monomer configuration and their self-assembly capacity in air/water interfaces and organic-water mixtures.

Pillar[5]arene-Based Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Without Conventional Chromophores

Fluorescent supramolecular polymers have garnered significant attention due to their successful integration of supramolecular polymers and fluorescence, offering vast potential for applications in sensing, imaging, optoelectronics, and photonics. In this study, we present a novel supramolecular polymer based on P5-OH, derived from mono-substituted pillararene macrocycles. Notably, these formed supramolecular polymeric aggregates exhibit a prominent blue emission, representing a rare instance of fluorescent polymers devoid of conventional chromophores. Furthermore, through the modification of alkyl chain ending groups attached to pillar[5]arenes, slight shifts in the emission peak could be observed. This research expands the scope of functional supramolecular polymeric systems utilizing pillararenes, providing valuable insights for the design of innovative luminescent materials and optical devices.

Concentration- and Solvent-Induced Chiral Tuning by Manipulating Non-Proteinogenic Amino Acids in Glycoconjugate Supra-Scaffolds: Interaction with Protein, and Streptomycin Delivery

We showed solvent- and concentration-triggered chiral tuning of the fibrous assemblies of two novel glycoconjugates Z-P(Gly)-Glu and Z-F(4-N)-Glu made by chemical attachment of Cbz-protected [short as Z)] non-proteinogenic amino acids L-phenylglycine [short as P(Gly)] and 4-Nitro-L-phenylalanine [short as F(4-N)] with D-glucosamine [short as Glu]. Both biomimetic gelators can form self-healing and shape-persistent gels with a very low critical gelator concentration in water as well as in various organic solvents, indicating they are ambidextrous supergelators. Detailed spectroscopic studies suggested β-sheet secondary structure formation during anisotropic self-aggregation of the gelators which resulted in the formation of hierarchical left-handed helical fibers in acetone with an interlayer spacing of 2.4 nm. After the physical characterization of the gels, serum protein interaction with the gelators was assessed, indicating they may be ideal for biomedical applications. Further, both gelators are benign, non-immunogenic, non-allergenic, and non-toxic in nature, which was confirmed by performing the blood parameters and liver function tests on Wister rats. Streptomycin-loaded hydrogels showed efficacious antibacterial activity in vitro and in vivo as well. Finally, cell attachment and biocompatibility of the hydrogels were demonstrated which opens a newer avenue for promising biomedical and therapeutic applications.

A Coformer Approach for Supramolecular Polymerization at High Concentrations

Insolubility of functional molecules caused by polymorphism sometimes poses limitations for their solution-based processing. Such a situation can also occur in the preparation processes of supramolecular polymers formed in a solution. An effective strategy to address this issue is to prepare amorphous solid states by introducing a "coformer" molecule capable of inhibiting the formation of an insoluble polymorph through co-aggregation. Herein, inspired by the coformer approach, we demonstrated a solubility enhancement of a barbiturate π-conjugated compound that can supramolecularly polymerize through six-membered hydrogen-bonded rosettes. Our newly synthesized supramolecular coformer molecule features a sterically demanding methyl group in the π-conjugated unit of the parent molecule. Although the parent molecule exhibits low solubility in nonpolar solvents due to the formation of a crystalline polymorph comprising a tape-like hydrogen-bonded array prior to the supramolecular polymerization, mixing with the coformer compound enhanced the solubility by inhibiting mesoscopic organization of the tapes. The two monomers were then co-polymerized into desired helicoidal supramolecular polymers through the formation of heteromeric rosettes.

Macroscopic Helical Assembly of One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers: Helicity Inversion Triggered by Solvent Isomerism

Assembling macroscopic helices with controllable chirality and understanding their formation mechanism are highly desirable but challenging tasks for artificial systems, especially coordination polymers. Here, we utilize solvents as an effective tool to induce the formation of macroscopic helices of chiral coordination polymers (CPs) and manipulate their helical sense. We chose the Ni/R-,S-BrpempH2 system with a one-dimensional tubular structure, where R-,S-BrpempH2 stands for R-,S-(1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylaminomethylphosphonic acid). The morphology of the self-assemblies can be controlled by varying the cosolvent in water, resulting in the formation of twisted ribbons of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-2T) in pure H2O; needle-like crystals of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)2·1/3CH3CN (R-,S-1C) in 20 vol % CH3CN/H2O; nanofibers of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-3F) in 20-40 vol % methanol/H2O or ethanol/H2O; and superhelices of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-4H or 5H) in 40 vol % propanol/H2O. Interestingly, the helicity of the superhelix can be controlled by using a propanol isomer in water. For the Ni/R-BrpempH2 system, a left-handed superhelix of R-4H(M) was obtained in 40 vol % NPA/H2O, while a right-handed superhelix of R-5H(P) was isolated in 40 vol % IPA/H2O. These results were rationalized by theoretical calculations. Adsorption studies revealed the chiral recognition behavior of these compounds. This work may contribute to the development of chiral CPs with a macroscopic helical morphology and interesting functionalities.

Chiral supramolecular polymers

As an active branch within the field of supramolecular polymers, chiral supramolecular polymers (SPs) are an excellent benchmark to generate helical structures that can clarify the origin of homochirality in Nature or help determine new exciting functionalities of organic materials. Herein, we highlight the most utilized strategies to build up chiral SPs by using chiral monomeric units or external stimuli. Selected examples of transfer of asymmetry, in which the point or axial chirality contained by the monomeric units is efficiently transferred to the supramolecular scaffold yielding enantioenriched helical structures, will be presented. The importance of the thermodynamics and kinetics associated with those processes is stressed, especially the influence that parameters such as the helix reversal and mismatch penalties exert on the achievement of amplification of asymmetry in co-assembled systems will also be considered. Remarkable examples of breaking symmetry, in which chiral supramolecular polymers can be attained from achiral self-assembling units by applying external stimuli like stirring, solvent or light, are highlighted. Finally, the specific and promising applications of chiral supramolecular polymers are presented with recent relevant examples.

Supramolecular Polymer Polymorphism: Spontaneous Helix-Helicoid Transition through Dislocation of Hydrogen-Bonded π-Rosettes

Polymorphism, a phenomenon whereby disparate self-assembled products can be formed from identical molecules, has incited interest in the field of supramolecular polymers. Conventionally, the monomers that constitute supramolecular polymers are engineered to facilitate one-dimensional aggregation and, consequently, their polymorphism surfaces primarily when the states of assembly differ significantly. This engenders polymorphs of divergent dimensionalities such as one- and two-dimensional aggregates. Notwithstanding, realizing supramolecular polymer polymorphism, wherein polymorphs maintain one-dimensional aggregation, persists as a daunting challenge. In this work, we expound upon the manifestation of two supramolecular polymer polymorphs formed from a large discotic supramolecular monomer (rosette), which consists of six hydrogen-bonded molecules with an extended π-conjugated core. These polymorphs are generated in mixtures of chloroform and methylcyclohexane, attributable to distinctly different disc stacking arrangements. The face-to-face (minimal displacement) and offset (large displacement) stacking arrangements can be predicated on their distinctive photophysical properties. The face-to-face stacking results in a twisted helix structure. Conversely, the offset stacking induces inherent curvature in the supramolecular fiber, thereby culminating in a hollow helical coil (helicoid). While both polymorphs exhibit bistability in nonpolar solvent compositions, the face-to-face stacking attains stability purely in a kinetic sense within a polar solvent composition and undergoes conversion into offset stacking through a dislocation of stacked rosettes. This occurs without the dissociation and nucleation of monomers, leading to unprecedented helicoidal folding of supramolecular polymers. Our findings augment our understanding of supramolecular polymer polymorphism, but they also highlight a distinctive method for achieving helicoidal folding in supramolecular polymers.

"Reaction"-Like Shaping of Self-Delivery Supramolecular Nanodrugs in the Nanoprecipitation Process

Nanoprecipitation, which is achieved through the diffusion and precipitation of drug molecules in blended solvent and antisolvent phases, is a classic route for constructing nanodrugs (NDs) and previously directed by diffusion-controlled theory. However, the diffusion-controlled mechanism is out of date in the recent preparation of self-delivery supramolecular NDs (SDSNDs), characterized by the construction of drug nanoparticles through supramolecular interactions in the absence of carriers and surfactants. Herein, a "reaction"-like complement, contributed from supramolecular interactions, is proposed for the preparation of naphthoquinone SDSNDs. Different from the diffusion-controlled process, the formation rate of SDSNDs via the "reaction"-like process is almost constant and highly dependent on the supramolecular interaction-determined Gibbs free energy of molecular binding. Thus, the formation rate and drug availability of SDSNDs are greatly improved by engineering the supramolecular interactions, which facilitates the preparation of SDSNDs with expected sizes, components, and therapeutic functions. As a deep understanding of supramolecular-interaction-involved nanoprecipitation, the current "reaction"-like protocol not only provides a theoretical supplement for classic nanoprecipitation but also highlights the potential of nanoprecipitation in shaping self-assembled, coassembled, and metal-ion-associated SDSNDs.

Double Cation-π Directed Two-Dimensional Metallacycle-Based Hierarchical Self-Assemblies for Dual-Mode Catalysis

Hierarchical self-assembly of Pt(II) metallacycles for the construction of functional materials has received considerable research interest, owing to their potential to meet increasing complexity and functionality demands while being based on well-defined scaffolds. However, the fabrication of long-range-ordered Pt(II) metallacycle-based two-dimensional hierarchical self-assemblies (2D HSAs) remains a challenge, primarily because of the limitations of conventional orthogonal noncovalent interaction (NCI) motifs and the intrinsic characteristics of Pt(II) metallacycles, making the delicate self-assembly processes difficult to control. Herein, we prepare well-regulated Pt(II)-metallacycle-based 2D HSAs through a directed strategy involving double cation-π interactions derived from C3-symmetric hexagonal Pt(II) metallacycles and C2-symmetric sodium phenate monomers. Spatially confined arrays of planar Pt(II) metallacycles and the selective growth of self-assemblies at desired locations are achieved by employing strong cation-π driving forces with well-defined directionality as the second orthogonal NCI, realizing the bottom-up, three-stage construction of Pt(II)-metallacycle-based 2D HSAs. The resultant 2D HSAs are applied as dual-mode catalysis platforms, which are loaded with two different nanocatalysts, one promoting catalytic oxidation and the other promoting photocatalytic reduction.

Solvent-Induced Pathway Complexity of Supramolecular Polymerization Unveiled Using the Hansen Solubility Parameters

Supramolecular building blocks assembling into helical aggregates are ubiquitous in the current literature, yet the role of solvents in these supramolecular polymerizations often remains elusive. Here, we present a systematic study that quantifies solvent-supramolecular polymer compatibility using the Hansen solubility parameters (δD, δH, and δP). We first studied the solubility space of the supramolecular building block triazine-1,3,5-tribenzenecarboxamide S-T. Due to its amphiphilic nature, a dual-sphere model based on 58 solvents was applied describing the solubility space of the monomeric state (green sphere) and supramolecular polymer state (blue sphere). To our surprise, further in-depth spectroscopic and morphological studies unveiled a distinct solubility region in-between the two spheres giving rise to the formation of higher-order aggregated structures. This phenomenon occurs due to subtle differences in polarity between the solvent and the side chains and highlights the solvent-induced pathway complexity of supramolecular polymerizations. Subsequent variations in concentration and temperature led to the expansion and contraction of both solubility spheres providing two additional features to tune the monomer and supramolecular polymer solubility. Finally, we applied our dual-sphere model on structurally disparate monomers, such as Zn-porphyrin (S-P) and triphenylamine (S-A), demonstrating the generality of the model and the importance of the supramolecular monomer design in connection with the solvent used. This work unravels the solvent-induced pathway complexity of discotic supramolecular building blocks using a parametrized approach in which interactions between the solvent and solute play a crucial role.

Combined NMR Spectroscopy and Quantum-Chemical Calculations in Fluorescent 1,2,3-Triazole-4-carboxylic Acids Fine Structures Analysis

The peculiarities of the optical properties of 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole acids and their sodium salts were investigated in different solvents (1,4-dioxane, dimethyl sulfoxide DMSO, methanol MeOH) and in mixtures with water. The results were discussed in terms of the molecular structure formed by inter- and intramolecular noncovalent interactions (NCIs) and their ability to ionize in anions. Theoretical calculations using the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) were carried out in different solvents to support the results. In polar and nonpolar solvents (DMSO, 1,4-dioxane), fluorescence was provided by strong neutral associates. Protic MeOH can weaken the acid molecules' association, forming other fluorescent species. The fluorescent species in water exhibited similar optical characteristics to those of triazole salts; therefore, their anionic character can be assumed. Experimental ¹H and ¹³C-NMR spectra were compared to their corresponding calculated spectra using the Gauge-Independent Atomic Orbital (GIAO) method and several relationships were established. All these findings showed that the obtained photophysical properties of the 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole acids noticeably depend on the environment and, therefore, are good candidates as sensors for the identification of analytes with labile protons.

Distinct seed topologies enable comparison of elongation and secondary nucleation pathways in seeded supramolecular polymerization

The influence of seed topologies on seeded supramolecular polymerization was examined using helicoidal and toroidal supramolecular polymer seeds. The addition of these seeds to a supersaturated solution of monomers led to distinct nucleation-growth kinetics, which were attributed to the significant difference between the elongation from helicoid termini and secondary nucleation catalyzed by the toroid surface.

Impact of sample history and solvent effects on pathway control in the supramolecular polymerisation of Au(i)-metallopeptide amphiphiles

We investigate the kinetics of the supramolecular polymerisation of an Au(i)-metallopeptide amphiphile that assembles into exceptionally long and rigid nanofibers. We developed a precise preparation protocol to measure the concentration dependent assembly kinetics which elucidated a nucleation-elongation dominated supramolecular polymerisation process. We show striking differences in the assembly behavior and morphology in aqueous media, even at organic solvent contents as low as 1 vol%, compared to pure buffer.

Pathway-Controlled Aqueous Supramolecular Polymerization via Solvent-Dependent Chain Conformation Effects

Solute-solvent interactions play a critical role in multiple fields, including biology, materials science, and (physical) organic, polymer, and supramolecular chemistry. Within the growing field of supramolecular polymer science, these interactions have been recognized as an important driving force for (entropically driven) intermolecular association, particularly in aqueous media. However, to date, solute-solvent effects remain poorly understood in the context of complex self-assembly energy landscapes and pathway complexity. Herein, we unravel the role of solute-solvent interactions in controlling chain conformation effects, allowing energy landscape modulation and pathway selection in aqueous supramolecular polymerization. To this end, we have designed a series of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE)-based bolaamphiphilic Pt(II) complexes OPE2-4 bearing solubilizing triethylene glycol (TEG) chains of equal length on both molecule ends, but a different size of the hydrophobic aromatic scaffold. Strikingly, detailed self-assembly studies in aqueous media disclose a different tendency of the TEG chains to fold back and enwrap the hydrophobic molecular component depending on both the size of the core and the volume fraction of the co-solvent (THF). The relatively small hydrophobic component of OPE2 can be readily shielded by the TEG chains, leading to only one aggregation pathway. In contrast, the decreased capability of the TEG chains to effectively shield larger hydrophobic cores (OPE3 and OPE4) enables different types of solvent quality-dependent conformations (extended, partly back-folded and back-folded), which in turn induce various controllable aggregation pathways with distinct morphologies and mechanisms. Our results shed light on previously underappreciated solvent-dependent chain conformation effects and their role in governing pathway complexity in aqueous media.

The Influence of 5′,8-Cyclo-2′-Deoxyguanosine on ds-DNA Charge Transfer Depends on Its Diastereomeric Form: A Theoretical Study

The genetic information stored in the nucleobase sequence is continuously exposed to harmful extra- and intra-cellular factors, which can lead to different types of DNA damage, with more than 70 lesion types identified so far. In this article, the influence of a multi-damage site containing (5′R/S) 5′,8-cyclo-2′-deoxyguanosine (cdG) and 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2′-deoxyguanosine (OXOdG) on charge transfer through ds-DNA was taken into consideration. The spatial geometries of oligo-RcdG: d[A1(5′R)cG2A3OXOG4A5]*d[T5C4T3C2T1] and oligo-ScdG: d[A1(5′S)cG2A3OXOG4A5]*d[T5C4T3C2T1] were optimized at the M06-2X/6-D95**//M06-2X/sto-3G level of theory in the aqueous phase using ONIOM methodology. For all the electronic property energies under discussion, the M06-2X/6-31++G** level of theory was used. Additionally, the non-equilibrated and equilibrated solvent-solute interactions were into consideration. The obtained results confirm the predisposition of OXOdG to radical cation formation regardless of the presence of other lesions in a ds-DNA structure. In the case of electron transfer, however, the situation is different. An excess electron migration towards (5′S)cdG was found to be preferred in the case of oligo-ScdG, while in the case of oligo-RcdG, OXOdG was favored. The above observation was confirmed by the charge transfer rate constant, vertical/adiabatic ionization potential, and electron affinity energy values, as well as the charge and spin distribution analysis. The obtained results indicate that 5′,8-cyclo-2′-deoxyguanosine, depending on the C5′ atom chirality, can significantly influence the charge migration process through the double helix. The above can be manifested by the slowdown of DNA lesion recognition and removal processes, which can increase the probability of mutagenesis and subsequent pathological processes. With regard to anticancer therapy (radio/chemo), the presence of (5′S)cdG in the structure of formed clustered DNA damage can lead to improvements in cancer treatment.

Lipidation Alters the Structure and Hydration of Myristoylated Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

Lipidated proteins are an emerging class of hybrid biomaterials that can integrate the functional capabilities of proteins into precisely engineered nano-biomaterials with potential applications in biotechnology, nanoscience, and biomedical engineering. For instance, fatty-acid-modified elastin-like polypeptides (FAMEs) combine the hierarchical assembly of lipids with the thermoresponsive character of elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) to form nanocarriers with emergent temperature-dependent structural (shape or size) characteristics. Here, we report the biophysical underpinnings of thermoresponsive behavior of FAMEs using computational nanoscopy, spectroscopy, scattering, and microscopy. This integrated approach revealed that temperature and molecular syntax alter the structure, contact, and hydration of lipid, lipidation site, and protein, aligning with the changes in the nanomorphology of FAMEs. These findings enable a better understanding of the biophysical consequence of lipidation in biology and the rational design of the biomaterials and therapeutics that rival the exquisite hierarchy and capabilities of biological systems.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are well-organized assemblies based on highly oriented and reversible noncovalent interactions containing photosensitive molecules as (co-)monomers. They have attracted increasing interest in smart materials and dynamic systems with precisely controllable functions, such as light-driven soft actuators, photoresponsive fluorescent anticounterfeiting and light-triggered electronic devices. The present review discusses light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers with their main photo-induced changes, e.g., geometry, dipole moment, and chirality. Based on these distinct changes, supramolecular polymers formed by light-activated molecules exhibit photoresponsive disassembly and reassembly. As a consequence, photo-induced supramolecular polymerization, "depolymerization," and regulation of the lengths and topologies are observed. Moreover, the light-controlled functions of supramolecular polymers, such as actuation, emission, and chirality transfer along length scales, are highlighted. Furthermore, a perspective on challenges and future opportunities is presented. Besides the challenge of moving from harmful UV light to visible/near IR light avoiding fatigue, and enabling biomedical applications, future opportunities include light-controlled supramolecular actuators with helical motion, light-modulated information transmission, optically recyclable materials, and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems.

The 2Ih and OXOG Proximity Consequences on Charge Transfer through ds-DNA: Theoretical Studies of Clustered DNA Damage

Genetic information is continuously exposed to harmful factors, both intra- and extracellular. Their activity can lead to the formation of different types of DNA damage. Clustered lesions (CDL) are problematic for DNA repair systems. In this study, the short ds-oligos with a CDL containing (R) or (S) 2Ih and ^OXOG in their structure were chosen as the most frequent in vitro lesions. In the condensed phase, the spatial structure was optimized at the M062x/D95**:M026x/sto-3G level of theory, while the electronic properties were optimized at the M062x/6-31++G** level. The influence of equilibrated and non-equilibrated solvent-solute interactions was then discussed. It was found that the presence of (R)2Ih in the ds-oligo structure causes a greater increase in structure sensitivity towards charge adoption than (S)2Ih, while ^OXOG shows high stability. Moreover, the analysis of charge and spin distribution reveals the different effects of 2Ih diastereomers. Additionally, the adiabatic ionization potential was found as follows for (R)-2Ih and (S)-2Ih in eV: 7.02 and 6.94. This was in good agreement with the AIP of the investigated ds-oligos. It was found that the presence of (R)-2Ih has a negative influence on excess electron migration through ds-DNA. Finally, according to the Marcus theory, the charge transfer constant was calculated. The results presented in the article show that both diastereomers of 5-carboxamido-5-formamido-2-iminohydantoin should play a significant role in the CDL recognition process via electron transfer. Moreover, it should be pointed out that even though the cellular level of (R and S)-2Ih has been obscured, their mutagenic potential should be at the same level as other similar guanine lesions found in different cancer cells.

Interplay Between Hydrogen Bonding and Electron Transfer in Mixed Valence Assemblies of Triarylamine Trisamides

Hydrogen-bonding interactions are assumed to play a critical role in the long-range transport of light or charge recently observed in supramolecular assemblies of C₃ -symmetrical discotic molecules. Herein, the structure of mixed valence assemblies formed by irradiating triarylamine trisamide (TATA) molecules was determined by multifarious techniques under various conditions with the aim of probing the interplay between the hydrogen bonding network and the rate of electron transport in different states (solution, gel, film). Irradiation was performed under initial states that vary by the degree of association of TATA monomers through hydrogen bonds. Firstly, a significant shift of the N-H and C=O stretching frequencies was observed by FTIR upon irradiation thus revealing an overlooked signature of TATA⋅+ species and interacting mixed valence aggregates. Secondly, gels and films both mostly consist of hydrogen-bonded TATA polymers but their EPR spectra recorded at 293 K reveal very different behaviors: localized electrons in the gels versus fully delocalized electrons in the films. Hydrogen bonding thus appears as a necessary but not sufficient condition to get fast electron transfer rates and a packing of the TATA monomers particularly suitable for charge transport is assumed to exist in the solid state. Finally, defects in the hydrogen bonding network are detected upon increasing the number of radical species in the mixed valence assemblies present in the film state without impeding the delocalization of the unpaired electrons. A delicate balance between hydrogen bonds and packing is thus necessary to get supramolecular polarons in mixed valence TATA assemblies.

Chiral and Morphological Anisotropy of Supramolecular Polymers Shaped by a Singularity in Solvent Composition

Understanding the role of solvent in translating molecular anisotropy to supramolecular polymers is in the early stages. A solvent's influence on the strength of different noncovalent interactions can explain anisotropic growth in some cases, but its effect on cooperative processes, particularly in mixed solvents, remains obscure. We report the self-assembly of a series of chiral perylene bisimides in water-cosolvent mixtures, and the results highlight the fascinating influence of solvent-solute interactions on supramolecular anisotropy, both chiral and morphological. The initial assembly is agnostic to solvent composition, resulting in weakly chiral, spherical nanostructures. In an extremely narrow solvent composition range, the nanospheres transform into long, prominently chiral supramolecular polymers. Further, chirality can be fully reversed by changing the good (achiral) cosolvent. We elucidate how solvent modulates specific noncovalent interactions and governs the kinetics and thermodynamics of key processes, such as spontaneous phase segregation, secondary nucleation, and cooperative growth. In the context of supramolecular polymerization, our results encourage one to steer the focus away from the physical attributes of a solvent (polarity, phase diagram, etc.) and toward the complexities of solvent-solute interactions.

Micelle and Nanotape Formation of Benzene Tricarboxamide Analogues with Selective Cancer Cell Cytotoxicity

Analogues of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide bearing combinations of different alkyl chains (dodecyl to octadecyl) and ester-linked PEG (polyethylene glycol) chains are shown to self-assemble into either micelles or nanotapes in aqueous solution, depending on the architecture (number of alkyl vs PEG chains). The cytotoxicity to cells is selectively greater for breast cancer cells than fibroblast controls in a dose-dependent manner. The compounds show strong stability, retaining their self-assembled structures at low pH (relevant to acidic tumor conditions) and in buffer and cell culture media.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Achiral Carbon Dots in Bi-Solvent Systems Triggered by Supramolecular Self-Assembly

An innovative strategy for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of carbon dots (CDs) has been developed: The achiral CDs displayed contrary supramolecular chirality and opposite CPL in two different bi-solvent systems, which are due to the formation of self-assembled helical nanostructures with two diverse assembly modes (P and M) in aggregate state via intermolecular π-π interactions and differential hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) without the need of any additional element of chirality.

Ionic supramolecular polymerization of water-soluble porphyrins: balancing ionic attraction and steric repulsion to govern stacking

We have synthesized novel water-soluble anionic porphyrin monomers that undergo pH-regulated ionic supramolecular polymerization in aqueous media. By tuning the total charge of the monomer, we selectively produced two different supramolecular polymers: J- and H-stacked. The main driving force toward the J-aggregated supramolecular polymers was the ionic interactions between the sulfonate and protonated pyrrole groups, ultimately affording neutral supramolecular polymers. In these J-aggregated supramolecular polymers, amide groups were aligned regularly along polymer wedges, which further assembled in an edge-to-edge manner to afford nanosheets. In contrast, the H-aggregated supramolecular polymers remained anionic, with their amide NH moieties acting as anion receptors along the polymer chains, thereby minimizing repulsion. For both polymers, varying the steric bulk of the peripheral ethylene glycol (EG) units controlled the rates of self-assembly as well as the degrees of polymerization. This steric effect was further tunable, depending on the solvation state of the EG chains. Accordingly, this new family of supramolecular polymers was created by taking advantage of unique driving forces that depended on both the pH and solvent.
