Hydrogen Spillover-Bridged Volmer/Tafel Processes Enabling Ampere-Level Current Density Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction under Low Overpotential

Inducing a Synergistic Effect on Ptδ+/Electron-Rich Sites via a Platinization Strategy: Generating Hyper-High Current Density in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Herein, we propose a platinization strategy for the preparation of Pt/X catalysts with low Pt content on substrates possessing electron-rich sites (Pt/X: X = Co3O4, NiO, CeO2, Covalent Organic Framework (COF), etc.). In examples with inorganic and organic substrates, respectively, Pt/Co3O4 possesses remarkable catalytic ability toward HER, achieving a current density at an overpotential of 500 mV that is 3.22 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. It was also confirmed by using operando Raman spectroscopy that the enhancement of catalytic activity was achieved after platinization of the COF, with a reduction of overpotential from 231 to 23 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that the improved catalytic activity of Pt/Co3O4 and Pt/COF originated from the re-modulation of Ptδ+ on the electronic structure and the synergistic effect of the interfacial Ptδ+/electron-rich sites. This work provides a rapid synthesis strategy for the synthesis of low-content Pt catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Ternary nanostructure of CdS-rGO-Ag for enhanced photoelectrochemical application

In the present study, we have synthesized the ternary nanostructure of CdS-rGO-Ag by using the solvothermal method for the enhanced photocatalytic as well as electrocatalytic activity of the material. The optical properties of the prepared samples were characterized by using UV-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. A decline in the energy gap of CdS-rGO-Ag nanostructure to 1.90 ± 0.05 from 2.40 ± 0.08 eV (CdS) is observed and may be attributed due to the rGO-Ag-induced creation of trap states in between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of CdS. The observed significant PL quenching also confirms the inclusion of trap states in the prepared nanostructure CdS-rGO-Ag, suggesting efficient photoactivity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of CdS-rGO-Ag for methylene blue (MB) dye degradation supports the photocatalytic activity of prepared nanostructures. Furthermore, the photoelectrochemical catalytic activity of the CdS-rGO-Ag catalyst investigated by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) depicts the improved current density, lowering of overpotential. The decrement in charge transfer resistance and enhancement in photocurrent density under light illumination indicates the better photoelectrochemical performance of CdS-rGO-Ag.

Ultra-Thin RuIr Alloy as Durable Electrocatalyst for Seawater Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of efficient, high-performance catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge, especially in seawater media. Here, RuIr alloy catalysts are prepared by the polyol reduction method. Compared with single-metal catalysts, the RuIr alloy catalysts exhibited higher activity and stability in seawater electrolysis due to their greater number of reactive sites and solubility resistance. The RuIr alloy has an overpotential of 75 mV@10 mA cm-2, which is similar to that of Pt/C (73 mV), and can operate stably for 100 hours in alkaline seawater. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that hydrogen atoms adsorbed at the top sites of Ru and Ir atoms are more favorable for HER and are most likely to be the reactive sites. This work provides a reference for developing highly efficient and stable catalysts for seawater electrolysis.

Dual-Intermetallic Heterostructure on Hierarchical Nanoporous Metal for Highly Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Constructing well-defined active multisites is an effective strategy to break linear scaling relationships to develop high-efficiency catalysts toward multiple-intermediate reactions. Here, dual-intermetallic heterostructure composed of tungsten-bridged Co3W and WNi4 intermetallic compounds seamlessly integrated on hierarchical nanoporous nickel skeleton is reported as a high-performance nonprecious electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions. By virtue of interfacial tungsten atoms configuring contiguous multisites with proper adsorptions of hydrogen and hydroxyl intermediates to accelerate water dissociation/combination and column-nanostructured nickel skeleton facilitating electron and ion/molecule transportations, nanoporous nickel-supported Co3W-WNi4 heterostructure exhibits exceptional hydrogen electrocatalysis in alkaline media, with outstanding durability and impressive catalytic activities for hydrogen oxidation reaction (geometric exchange current density of ≈6.62 mA cm-2) and hydrogen evolution reaction (current density of ≈1.45 A cm-2 at overpotential of 200 mV). Such atom-ordered intermetallic heterostructure alternative to platinum group metals shows genuine potential for hydrogen production and utilization in hydroxide-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers and fuel cells.

Pre-Adsorbed H-Mediated Electrochemiluminescence

In conventional electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems, the presence of the competitive cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous electrolytes is typically considered to be a side reaction, leading to a reduced ECL efficiency and stability due to H2 generation and aggregation at the electrode surface. However, the significant role of adsorbed hydrogen (H*) as a key intermediate, formed during the Volmer reaction in the HER process, has been largely overlooked. In this study, employing the luminol-H2O2 system as a model, we for the first time demonstrate a novel H*-mediated coreactant activation mechanism, which remarkably enhances the ECL intensity. H* facilitates cleavage of the O-O bond in H2O2, selectively generating highly reactive hydroxyl radicals for efficient ECL reactions. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations demonstrate that this H*-mediated mechanism achieves superior coreactant activation compared to the conventional direct electron transfer pathway, which unveils a new pathway for coreactant activation in the ECL systems.

Engineering interfacial sulfur migration in transition-metal sulfide enables low overpotential for durable hydrogen evolution in seawater

Hydrogen production from seawater remains challenging due to the deactivation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrode under high current density. To overcome the activity-stability trade-offs in transition-metal sulfides, we propose a strategy to engineer sulfur migration by constructing a nickel-cobalt sulfides heterostructure with nitrogen-doped carbon shell encapsulation (CN@NiCoS) electrocatalyst. State-of-the-art ex situ/in situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal the restructuring of the CN@NiCoS interface, clearly identifying dynamic sulfur migration. The NiCoS heterostructure stimulates sulfur migration by creating sulfur vacancies at the Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterointerface, while the migrated sulfur atoms are subsequently captured by the CN shell via strong C-S bond, preventing sulfide dissolution into alkaline electrolyte. Remarkably, the dynamically formed sulfur-doped CN shell and sulfur vacancies pairing sites significantly enhances HER activity by altering the d-band center near Fermi level, resulting in a low overpotential of 4.6 and 8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline freshwater and seawater media, and long-term stability up to 1000 h. This work thus provides a guidance for the design of high-performance HER electrocatalyst by engineering interfacial atomic migration.

Constructing Built-in-Electric Field for Boosting Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting shows great potential for producing clean and green hydrogen, but it is hindered by slow reaction kinetics. Advanced electrocatalysts are needed to lower the energy barriers. The establishment of built-in electric fields (BIEF) in heterointerfaces has been found to be beneficial for speeding up electron transfer, increasing electrical conductivity, adjusting the local reaction environment, and optimizing the chemisorption energy with intermediates. Engineering and modifying the BIEF in heterojunctions offer significant opportunities to enhance the electronic properties of catalysts, thus improving the reaction kinetics. This comprehensive review focuses on the latest advances in BIEF engineering in heterojunction catalysts for efficient water electrolysis. It highlights the fundamentals, engineering, modification, characterization, and application of BIEF in electrocatalytic water splitting. The review also discusses the challenges and future prospects of BIEF engineering. Overall, this review provides a thorough examination of BIEF engineering for the next generation of water electrolysis devices.

Rational Design of Dynamic Interface Water Evolution on Turing Electrocatalyst toward the Industrial Hydrogen Production

Manipulating the structural and kinetic dissociation processes of water at the catalyst-electrolyte interface is vital for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) at industrial current density. This is seldom actualized due to the intricacies of the electrochemical reaction interface. Herein, this work introduces a rapid, nonequilibrium cooling technique for synthesizing ternary Turing catalysts with short-range ordered structures (denoted as FeNiRu/C). These advanced structures empower the FeNiRu/C to exhibit excellent HER performance in 1 m KOH with an ultralow overpotential of 6.5 and 166.2 mV at 10 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively, and a specific activity 7.3 times higher than that of Pt/C. Comprehensive mechanistic analyses reveal that abundant atomic species form asymmetric atomic electric fields on the catalyst surface inducing a directed evolution and the dissociation process of interfacial H2O molecules. In addition, the locally topologized structure effectively mitigates the high hydrogen coverage of the active site induced by the high current density. The establishment of the relationship between free water population and HER activity provides a new paradigm for the design of industrially relevant high performance alkaline HER catalysts.

Pt Single-Atoms on Structurally-Integrated 3D N-Doped Carbon Tubes Grid for Ampere-Level Current Density Hydrogen Evolution

To date, the excellent mass-catalytic activities of Pt single-atoms catalysts (Pt-SACs) toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are categorically confirmed; however, their high current density performance remains a challenge for practical applications. Here, a binder-free approach is exemplified to fabricate self-standing superhydrophilic-superaerphobic Pt-SACs cathodes by directly anchoring Pt-SAs via Pt-NxC4-x coordination bonds to the structurally-integrated 3D nitrogen-doped carbon tubes (N-CTs) array grid (denoted as Pt@N-CTs). The 3D Pt@N-CTs cathode with optimal Pt-SACs loading is capable of operating at a high current density of 1000 mA cm-2 with an ultralow overpotential of 157.9 mV with remarkable long-term stability over 11 days at 500 mA cm-2. The 3D super-wettable free-standing Pt@N-CTs possess interconnected vertical and lateral N-CTs with hierarchical-sized open channels, which facilitates the mass transfer. The binder-free immobilization adding to the large surface area and 3D-interconnected open channels endow Pt@N-CTs cathodes with high accessible active sites, electrical conductivity, and structural stability that maximize the utilization efficiency of Pt-SAs to achieve ampere-level current density HER at low overpotentials.

Rational Construction of Pt Incorporated Co3O4 as High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalysts in alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting are required to efficiently produce hydrogen while posing a challenge to show excellent performances. Herein, we have successfully synthesized platinum nanoparticles incorporated in a Co3O4 nanostructure (denoted as Pt-Co3O4) that show superior HER activity and stability in alkaline solutions (the overpotentials of 37 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2). The outstanding electrocatalytic activity originates from synergistic effects between Pt and Co3O4 and increased electron conduction. Theoretical calculations show a significant decrease in the ΔGH* of Co active sites and a remarkable increase in electron transport. Our work puts forward a special and simple synthesized way of adjusting the H* adsorption energy of an inert site for application in HER.

Molten-Salt Electrochemical Preparation of Co2B/MoB2 Heterostructured Nanoclusters for Boosted pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Boosting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of α-MoB2 at large current densities and in pH-universal medium is significant for efficient hydrogen production. In this work, Co2B/MoB2 heterostructured nanoclusters are prepared by molten-salt electrolysis (MSE) and then used as a HER catalyst. The composition, structure, and morphology of Co2B/MoB2 can be modulated by altering the stoichiometries of raw materials and synthesis temperatures. Impressively, the obtained Co2B/MoB2 at optimized conditions exhibits a low overpotential of 297 and 304 mV at 500 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2SO4 and 1 m KOH, respectively. Moreover, the Co2B/MoB2 catalyst possesses a long-term catalytic stability of over 190 h in both acidic and alkaline medium. The excellent HER performance is due to the modified electronic structure at the Co2B/MoB2 heterointerface where electrons are accumulated at the Mo sites to strengthen the H adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the formation of the Co2B/MoB2 heterointerface decreases the H adsorption and H2O dissociation free energies, contributing to the boosted HER intrinsic catalytic activity of Co2B/MoB2. Overall, this work provides an experimental and theoretical paradigm for the design of efficient pH-universal boride heterostructure electrocatalysts.

Design Strategies towards Advanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts at Large Current Densities

Hydrogen (H2), produced by water electrolysis with the electricity from renewable sources, is an ideal energy carrier for achieving a carbon-neutral and sustainable society. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic half-reaction of water electrolysis, which requires active and robust electrocatalysts to reduce the energy consumption for H2 generation. Despite numerous electrocatalysts have been reported by the academia for HER, most of them were only tested under relatively small current densities for a short period, which cannot meet the requirements for industrial water electrolysis. To bridge the gap between academia and industry, it is crucial to develop highly active HER electrocatalysts which can operate at large current densities for a long time. In this review, the mechanisms of HER in acidic and alkaline electrolytes are firstly introduced. Then, design strategies towards high-performance large-current-density HER electrocatalysts from five aspects including number of active sites, intrinsic activity of each site, charge transfer, mass transfer, and stability are discussed via featured examples. Finally, our own insights about the challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are presented.

Activating TiO2 through the Phase Transition-Mediated Hydrogen Spillover to Outperform Pt for Electrocatalytic pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Endowing conventional materials with specific functions that are hardly available is invariably of significant importance but greatly challenging. TiO2 is proven to be highly active for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution while intrinsically inert for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its poor electrical conductivity and unfavorable hydrogen adsorption/desorption behavior. Herein, the first activation of inert TiO2 for electrocatalytic HER is demonstrated by synergistically modulating the positions of d-band center and triggering hydrogen spillover through the dual doping-induced partial phase transition. The N, F co-doping-induced partial phase transition from anatase to rutile phase in TiO2 (AR-TiO2|(N,F)) exhibits extraordinary HER performance with overpotentials of 74, 80, and 142 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M H2SO4, and 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline electrolytes, respectively, which are substantially better than pure TiO2, and even superior to the benchmark Pt/C catalysts. These findings may open a new avenue for the development of low-cost alternative to noble metal catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Electrodeposition synthesis of cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic phosphide on nickel foam for efficient water splitting

A reasonable design of excellent bifunctional catalyst is an effective strategy for large-scale hydrogen production. In this study, a two-stage electrodeposition method was used to prepare a crystalline-amorphous structure cobalt molybdenum phosphide layered particles with different sizes on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. Electron rearrangement at the Co/CoMoP2@CoMoO4 heterogeneous interface can reduce the reaction energy barrier for HER and OER, and accelerate the catalytic reaction kinetics. The doping of Mo can promote the synergistic effect between Co and Mo, thereby optimizing the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption/desorption. This layered arrangement of different size particles greatly improves the active area of the catalyst. In alkaline solution, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 only required overpotentials of 40 mV for HER and 278 mV for OER, respectively. The cell voltage required for the CoMo-P/NF||CoMo-P/NF electrolytic cell is only 1.53 V at 10 mA cm-2. This study provides a reference for the rapid, efficient, and environmentally friendly preparation of high-activity water splitting catalysts with large surface areas.

Enabling efficient ample-level oxygen evolution on nickel-iron Prussian blue analogue/hydroxide via hierarchical mass transfer channel construction

Enhancing double-phase mass transfer capability and reducing overpotential at high currents are critical in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst design. In this work, nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) loaded on nickel foam (NF) was used as a self-sacrificing template for subsequent growth of nickel-iron Prussian blue (NiFe-PBA) hollow nanocubes on its sheet arrays. The triple-scale porous structure is therefore in-situ constructed in the produced NiFe-PBA@LDH/NF catalyst, where NiFe-PBA nanocubes, NiFe-LDH sheets and NF skeletons provide pores at hundred-nanometers, microns and hundred-microns, respectively. Due to the successful construction of hierarchical mass transfer channels in the catalyst, the overpotential required to deliver 1000 mA cm-2 OER is only 396 mV, which is 80 mV lower than that of NiFe-LDH/NF with a double-scale porous structure, manifesting the importance of the appropriate mass transfer channels, promoting the potential application of the NiFe-PBA@LDH/NF catalyst in industrial-scale electrolysers.

Constructing regulable supports via non-stoichiometric engineering to stabilize ruthenium nanoparticles for enhanced pH-universal water splitting

Establishing appropriate metal-support interactions is imperative for acquiring efficient and corrosion-resistant catalysts for water splitting. Herein, the interaction mechanism between Ru nanoparticles and a series of titanium oxides, including TiO, Ti4O7 and TiO2, designed via facile non-stoichiometric engineering is systematically studied. Ti4O7, with the unique band structure, high conductivity and chemical stability, endows with ingenious metal-support interaction through interfacial Ti-O-Ru units, which stabilizes Ru species during OER and triggers hydrogen spillover to accelerate HER kinetics. As expected, Ru/Ti4O7 displays ultralow overpotentials of 8 mV and 150 mV for HER and OER with a long operation of 500 h at 10 mA cm-2 in acidic media, which is expanded in pH-universal environments. Benefitting from the excellent bifunctional performance, the proton exchange membrane and anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with Ru/Ti4O7 achieves superior performance and robust operation. The work paves the way for efficient energy conversion devices.

Remodeling the Electronic Structure of Metallic Nickel and Ruthenium via Alloying in a Molecular Template for Sustainable Hydrogen Evolution

The reasonably constructed high-performance electrocatalyst is crucial to achieve sustainable electrocatalytic water splitting. Alloying is a prospective approach to effectively boost the activity of metal electrocatalysts. However, it is a difficult subject for the controllable synthesis of small alloying nanostructures with high dispersion and robustness, preventing further application of alloy catalysts. Herein, we propose a well-defined molecular template to fabricate a highly dispersed NiRu alloy with ultrasmall size. The catalyst presents superior alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance featuring an overpotential as low as 20.6 ± 0.9 mV at 10 mA·cm-2. Particularly, it can work steadily for long periods of time at industrial-grade current densities of 0.5 and 1.0 A·cm-2 merely demanding low overpotentials of 65.7 ± 2.1 and 127.3 ± 4.3 mV, respectively. Spectral experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that alloying can change the d-band center of both Ni and Ru by remodeling the electron distribution and then optimizing the adsorption of intermediates to decrease the water dissociation energy barrier. Our research not only demonstrates the tremendous potential of molecular templates in architecting highly active ultrafine nanoalloy but also deepens the understanding of water electrolysis mechanism on alloy catalysts.

Hydrogen Spillover Phenomenon at the Interface of Metal-Supported Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution

ConspectusHydrogen spillover, as a well-known phenomenon for thermal hydrogenation, generally involves the migration of active hydrogen on the surface of metal-supported catalysts. For thermocatalytic hydrogenation, hydrogen spillover generally takes place from metals with superiority for dissociating hydrogen molecules to supports with strong hydrogen adsorption under a H2 environment with high pressures. The former can bring high hydrogen chemical potential to largely reduce the kinetic barrier of the migration of active hydrogen species from metals to supports. At the same time, the latter can make H* migration thermodynamically spontaneous. For these reasons, hydrogen spillover is a common interfacial phenomenon occurring on metal-supported catalysts during thermocatalysis. Recently, this phenomenon has been observed for the exceptionally enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution and other electrocatalytic organic synthesis. Different from hydrogen spillover for thermocatalysis under high H2 pressure, hydrogen spillover for electrocatalysis involves the migration of active hydrogen species (H*) from metals with strong hydrogen adsorption to supports with weak hydrogen adsorption, thereby suffering from a thermodynamically unfavorable process accompanied by a high kinetic barrier. Thus, the occurrence of hydrogen spillover at the electrocatalytic interface is not easy, and successful cases are rare. Understanding the underlying nature of hydrogen spillover at the electrocatalytic interface of metal-supported catalysts is critical to the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.In this Account, we provide in-depth insights into recent advances in hydrogen spillover at the electrocatalytic interface for a significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution performance. Electron accumulation at the metal-support interface induces severe interfacial H* trapping and is recognized as the main factor in the failed hydrogen spillover. Given this, we developed two novel strategies to promote the occurrence of hydrogen spillover at the electrocatalytic interface. These strategies include (i) the introduction of ligand environments to enrich the local hydrogen coverage on metals and lower the barrier for interfacial hydrogen spillover and (ii) the minimization of work function difference between metals and supports (ΔΦ) to relieve electron accumulation and lower the kinetic barrier for hydrogen spillover. Also, we summarize the previously reported strategy of shortening the metal-support interface distance to lower the kinetic barrier for interfacial hydrogen spillover. Afterward, some criteria and methodologies are proposed to identify the hydrogen spillover phenomenon at the electrocatalytic interface. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are also discussed. Based on this Account, we aim to provide new insights into electrocatalysis, particularly the targeted control of hydrogen spillover at the electrocatalytic interface, and then to offer guidelines for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Weakened Interfacial Hydrogen Bond Connectivity Drives Selective Photocatalytic Water Oxidation toward H2O2 at Water/Brookite-TiO2 Interface

The formation of H2O2 through the two-electron photocatalytic water oxidation reaction (WOR) is significant but encounters the competition with the four-electron O2 evolution reaction. Recent studies showed a crystal-phase dependence in H2O2 selectivity, where high purity brookite TiO2 (b-TiO2) exhibits remarkable H2O2 selectivity in contrast to the common rutile phase TiO2 (r-TiO2). However, the origin of such a structure-induced selectivity preference remains elusive, primarily due to the complexities associated with the solid-liquid interface system and excited-state chemistry. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the selectivity mechanism of WOR at the water/b-TiO2(210) and water/r-TiO2(110) interfaces, employing first-principles molecular dynamics simulations and microkinetic analyses. Intriguingly, our results reveal that the intrinsic catalytic ability of the b-TiO2(210) itself does not enhance H2O2 selectivity compared to r-TiO2(110). Instead, it is the weakened interfacial hydrogen bond connectivity, modulated by the herringbone-like local atomic structure of the b-TiO2(210) surface, that determines the selectivity. Specifically, this weakened H-bond connectivity (i.e., local low water density) at the interface, owing to the strong water adsorption and distinct adsorption orientation, can stabilize the OH• radical and inhibit its deprotonation, leading to an improved H2O2 selectivity. By contrast, the relatively strong interface H-bond connectivity established over r-TiO2(110) accelerates the deprotonation of OH•, with the OH• coverage being 3 orders of magnitude lower than at the water/b-TiO2(210) interface. This study quantitatively demonstrates that the local H-bond structure (water density) at the liquid/solid interface significantly influences photocatalytic selectivity, and this insight may offer a rational approach to enhance the H2O2 selectivity.

Triggering efficient reconstructions of Co/Fe dual-metal incorporated Ni hydroxide by phosphate additives for electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolutions

Alkaline electrochemical water splitting has been considered as an efficient way for the green hydrogen production in industry, where the electrocatalysts play the critical role for the electricity-to-fuel conversion efficiency. Phosphate salts are widely used as additives in the fabrication of electrocatalysts with improved activity, but their roles on the electrocatalytic performance have not been fully understood. Herein, we fabricate Co, Fe dual-metal incorporated Ni hydroxide on Ni foam using NaH2PO4 ((Co, Fe)NiOxHy-pi) and NaH2PO2 ((Co, Fe)NiOxHy-hp) as additive, respectively. We find that (Co, Fe)NiOxHy-hp with NaH2PO2 in the fabrication shows high activity and stability for both HER and OER (a overpotential of -0.629 V and 0.65 V at 400 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively). Further experiment reveals that the reconstructed structures of electrocatalyst by using NaH2PO2 (hp) endow high electrocatalytic performances: (1) in-situ generated active metal improves the accumulation, transportation and activity of hydrogen species in the HER process; and (2) in-situ generated poor-crystalline hydroxide endows superior charge/mass transportation and kinetics improvements in the OER process. Our study may provide an insightful understanding on the catalytic performance of non-precious metal electrocatalysts by controlling additives and guidance for the design and synthesis of novel electrocatalysts.

The Superaerophobic N-Doped Carbon Nanocage with Hydrogen Spillover Effort for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Under the high current density, the excessive strong adsorption of H* intermediates and H2 accumulation the catalysts are the major obstacle to the industrial application of hydrogen evolation reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein, through experimental exploration, it is found that the superaerophobic Nitrogen (N)-doped carbon material can promote the rapid release of H2 and provide H* desorption site for the hydrogen spillover process, which makes it have great potential as the catalysts support for hydrogen spillover. Based on this discovery, this work develops the hydrogen spillover catalyst with electron-rich Pt sites loaded on N-doped carbon nanocage (N-CNC) with adjustable work function. Through a series of comprehensive electrochemical tests, the existence of hydrogen spillover effort has been proved. Moreover, the in situ tests showed that pyrrolic-N can activate adjacent carbon sites as the desorption sites for hydrogen spillover. The Pt@N-1-CNC with the minimum work function difference (ΔΦ) between Pt NPs and support shows superior hydrogen evolution performance, only needs overpotential of 12.2 mV to reach current density of 10 mA cm-2 , outstanding turnover frequency (TOF) (44.7 s-1 @100 mV) and superior durability under the 360 h durability tests at current density of 50 mA cm-2 .

Amorphous RuPd bimetallene for hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic and alkaline conditions: a first-principles study

Metallene materials can provide a large number of active catalytic sites for the efficient use of noble metals as catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), whereas the intrinsic activity on the surface is insufficient in crystal phase. The amorphous phase with an inherent long-range disorder can offer a rich coordinate environment and charge polarization on the surface is proposed for promoting the intrinsic catalytic activity on the surface of noble metals. Herein, we designed an amorphous RuPd (am-RuPd) structure by the first principles molecular dynamics method. The performance of the acidic HER on am-RuPd can have a huge enhancement due to the free energy change of hydrogen adsorption close to zero. In alkaline conditions, the H2O dissociation energy barrier on am-RuPd is just 0.49 eV, and it is predicted that the alkaline HER performance of am-RuPd will largely exceed that of Pt nanocrystalline sheets. This work provides a strategy for enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity on the surface and a way to design an efficient HER catalyst based on metallene materials used in both acidic and alkaline conditions.

Metal Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Production in Water Splitting

The rising demand for fossil fuels and the resulting pollution have raised environmental concerns about energy production. Undoubtedly, hydrogen is the best candidate for producing clean and sustainable energy now and in the future. Water splitting is a promising and efficient process for hydrogen production, where catalysts play a key role in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). HER electrocatalysis can be well performed by Pt with a low overpotential close to zero and a Tafel slope of about 30 mV dec-1. However, the main challenge in expanding the hydrogen production process is using efficient and inexpensive catalysts. Due to electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical stability, transition metal compounds are the best options for HER electrocatalysts. This study will focus on analyzing the current situation and recent advances in the design and development of nanostructured electrocatalysts for noble and non-noble metals in HER electrocatalysis. In general, strategies including doping, crystallization control, structural engineering, carbon nanomaterials, and increasing active sites by changing morphology are helpful to improve HER performance. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in designing functional and stable electrocatalysts for HER in efficient hydrogen production from water-splitting electrolysis will be described.

Facilitating alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction on the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 through Pt single atoms doping

Exploring an active and cost-effective electrocatalyst alternative to carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained elusive to date. Here, we report a catalyst based on platinum single atoms (SAs) doped into the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 support (referred to as Pt-Ru/RuO2), which features a low HER overpotential, an excellent stability and a distinctly enhanced cost-based activity compared to commercial Pt/C and Ru/C in 1 M KOH. Advanced physico-chemical characterizations disclose that the sluggish water dissociation is accelerated by RuO2 while Pt SAs and the metallic Ru facilitate the subsequent H* combination. Theoretical calculations correlate with the experimental findings. Furthermore, Pt-Ru/RuO2 only requires 1.90 V to reach 1 A cm-2 and delivers a high price activity in the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. This research offers a feasible guidance for developing the noble metal-based catalysts with high performance and low cost toward practical H2 production.

Regulating the Electronic Structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks by Introducing Mn for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Activity

The construction of low-cost and highly efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is paramount for clean and sustainable hydrogen energy. In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) OER electrocatalysts have attracted tremendous research attention. Herein, we report a simple and facile strategy to construct bimetallic MOFs (named CoMn0.01) for enhancing OER catalytic performance. Significantly, CoMn0.01 exhibited remarkable OER activity (255 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a low Tafel slope of 66 mV dec-1, superior to those of commercial benchmark electrocatalysts (RuO2, 352 mV, 178 mV dec-1). Besides, the catalyst demonstrated outstanding longevity for 144 h at a current density of 100 mA cm -2. Mn doping can regulate the electronic structure of Co MOFs, which optimizes charge transfer capability and improves conductivity.

Diluting the Resistance of Built-in Electric Fields in Oxygen Vacancy-enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x for Enhanced Hydrogen Spillover in Alkaline Seawater Splitting

Recently, hydrogen spillover based binary (HSBB) catalysts have received widespread attention due to the sufficiently utilized reaction sites. However, the specific regulation mechanism of spillover intensity is still unclear. Herein, we have fabricated oxygen vacancies enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x to investigate the internal relationship between electron supply and mechanism of hydrogen spillover enhancement. The DFT calculations cooperate with in situ Raman spectrum to uncover that the H* spillover from NiMoO4-x to Ru. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies weakened the electron supply from Ru to NiMoO4-x , which contributes to dilute the resistance of built-in electric field (BEF) for hydrogen spillover. In addition, the higher ion concentration in electrolyte will promote the H* adsorption step obviously, which is demonstrated by in situ EIS tests. As a result, the Ru/NiMoO4-x exhibits a low overpotential of 206 mV at 3.0 A cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 28.8 mV dec-1 , and an excellent durability of 550 h at the current density of 0.5 A cm-2 for HER in 1.0 M KOH seawater.

Trade-Off between Rough and Smooth Electrode Surfaces toward Stable Zn Stripping/Plating in Aqueous Electrolytes

The effects of surface roughness on the performance of the Zn metal anode in aqueous electrolytes are investigated by experiments and computational simulations. Smooth surfaces can homogenize the nucleation and growth of Zn, which helps to form a flat Zn anode under high current density. In spite of these advantages, the whole surface of the smooth electrode serves as the reactive contact area for parasitic reactions, generating severe hydrogen evolution, corrosion, and byproduct formation, which seriously hinder the long-term cycle stability of the Zn anode. To trade off this double-sided effect, we identify a medium degree of surface roughness that could stabilize the Zn anode for 1000 h cycling at 1.0 mAh cm-2. The electrode also enabled stable cycling for 800 h at a high current density of 5.0 mAh cm-2. This naked Zn metal anode with optimized surface roughness holds great promise for direct use in aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Constructing Interfacial Oxygen Vacancy and Ruthenium Lewis Acid-Base Pairs to Boost the Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Simultaneous optimization of the energy level of water dissociation, hydrogen and hydroxide desorption is the key to achieving fast kinetics for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the well-dispersed Ru clusters on the surface of amorphous/crystalline CeO2-δ (Ru/ac-CeO2-δ ) is demonstrated to be an excellent electrocatalyst for significantly boosting the alkaline HER kinetics owing to the presence of unique oxygen vacancy (VO ) and Ru Lewis acid-base pairs (LABPs). The representative Ru/ac-CeO2-δ exhibits an outstanding mass activity of 7180 mA mgRu -1 that is approximately 9 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C at the potential of -0.1 V (V vs RHE) and an extremely low overpotential of 21.2 mV at a geometric current density of 10 mA cm-2 . Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the VO as Lewis acid sites facilitate the adsorption of H2 O and cleavage of H-OH bonds, meanwhile, the weak Lewis basic Ru clusters favor for the hydrogen desorption. Importantly, the desorption of OH from VO sites is accelerated via a water-assisted proton exchange pathway, and thus boost the kinetics of alkaline HER. This study sheds new light on the design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts with LABPs for the enhanced alkaline HER.

Unusual Sabatier principle on high entropy alloy catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions

The Sabatier principle is widely explored in heterogeneous catalysis, graphically depicted in volcano plots. The most desirable activity is located at the peak of the volcano, and further advances in activity past this optimum are possible by designing a catalyst that circumvents the limitation entailed by the Sabatier principle. Herein, by density functional theory calculations, we discovered an unusual Sabatier principle on high entropy alloy (HEA) surface, distinguishing the "just right" (ΔGH* = 0 eV) in the Sabatier principle of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A new descriptor was proposed to design HEA catalysts for HER. As a proof-of-concept, the synthesized PtFeCoNiCu HEA catalyst endows a high catalytic performance for HER with an overpotential of 10.8 mV at -10 mA cm-2 and 4.6 times higher intrinsic activity over the state-of-the-art Pt/C. Moreover, the unusual Sabatier principle on HEA catalysts can be extended to other catalytic reactions.

Multi-d Electron Synergy in LaNi1-x Cox Ru Intermetallics Boosts Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Despite the fact that d-band center theory links the d electron structure of transition metals to their catalytic activity, it is yet unknown how the synergistic effect of multi-d electrons impacts catalytic performance. Herein, novel LaNi1-x Cox Ru intermetallics containing 5d, 4d, and 3d electrons were prepared. In these compounds, the 5d orbital of La transfers electrons to the 4d orbital of Ru, which provides adsorption sites for H*. The 3d orbitals of Ni and Co interact with the 5d and 4d orbitals to generate an anisotropic electron distribution, which facilitates the adsorption and desorption of OH*. The synergistic effect of multi-d electrons ensures efficient catalytic activity. The optimized LaNi0.5 Co0.5 Ru has an overpotential of 43mV at 10 mA cm-2 for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Beyond offering a variety of new electrocatalysts, this work reveals the multi-d electron synergy in promoting catalytic reaction.

Hydrogen spillover enhances alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis on interface-rich metallic Pt-supported MoO3

Efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation/evolution reaction (HOR/HER) are essential for commercializing alkaline fuel cells and electrolyzers. The sluggish HER/HOR reaction kinetics in base is the key issue that requires resolution so that commercialization may proceed. It is also quite challenging to decrease the noble metal loading without sacrificing performance. Herein, we report improved HER/HOR activity as a result of hydrogen spillover on platinum-supported MoO3 (Pt/MoO3-CNx-400) with a Pt loading of 20%. The catalyst exhibited a decreased over-potential of 66.8 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 current density with a Tafel slope of 41.2 mV dec-1 for the HER in base. The Pt/MoO3-CNx-400 also exhibited satisfactory HOR activity in base. The mass-specific exchange current density of Pt/MoO3-CNx-400 and commercial Pt/C are 505.7 and 245 mA mgPt-1, respectively. The experimental results suggest that the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) is the key descriptor for the HER/HOR. We also demonstrated that the enhanced HER/HOR performance was due to the hydrogen spillover from Pt to MoO3 sites that enhanced the Volmer/Heyrovsky process, which led to high HER/HOR activity and was supported by the experimental and theoretical investigations. The work function value of Pt [Φ = 5.39 eV) is less than that of β-MoO3 (011) [Φ = 7.09 eV], which revealed the charge transfer from Pt to the β-MoO3 (011) surface. This suggested the feasibility of hydrogen spillover, and was further confirmed by the relative hydrogen adsorption energy [ΔGH] at different sites. Based on these findings, we propose that the H2O or H2 dissociation takes place on Pt and interfaces to form Pt-Had or (Pt/MoO3)-Had, and some of the Had shifted to MoO3 sites through hydrogen spillover. Then, Had at the Pt and interface, and MoO3 sites reacted with H2O and HO- to form H2 or H2O molecules, thereby boosting the HER/HOR activity. This work may provide valuable information for the development of hydrogen-spillover-based electrocatalysts for use in various renewable energy devices.

Ruthenium and Iron Co-doped Molybdenum Carbide as a Stable Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst in Harsh Electrolyte

Electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the most commercially valuable pathways of hydrogen production especially combined with renewable electricity; however, efficient and durable electrocatalysts are urgently needed to reduce electric energy consumption. Here, we reported a Ru and Fe co-doped Mo2 C on nitrogen doped carbon via a controllable two-step method, which can be used for efficient and enduring hydrogen evolution reaction. At 10, 100 and 200 mA cm-2 in acidic electrolyte, the resultant Ru-Fe/Mo2 C@NC delivered low overpotentials of 31, 78 and 103 mV, respectively, which are comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %). At an applied current density of 100 mA cm-2 , stable hydrogen production was conducted for 120 h without obvious degradation. In alkaline media, Ru-Fe/Mo2 C@NC can also deliver a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h. Furthermore, the Ru-Fe/Mo2 C@NC electrocatalyst was used as cathode in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer under industrial environments for robust hydrogen production. The characterization and electrochemical results prove the synergism effects between Ru, Fe dopants and Mo2 C for promoting hydrogen evolution activity. This work would pave a new avenue to fabricate low-cost, high-performance hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts for industrial water electrolyzers.

Parallel Nanosheet Arrays for Industrial Oxygen Production

According to the traditional nucleation theory, crystals in solution nucleate under thermal fluctuations with random crystal orientation. Thus, nanosheet arrays grown on a substrate always exhibit disordered arrangements, which impede mass transfer during catalysis. To overcome this limitation, here, we demonstrate stress-induced, oriented nucleation and growth of nanosheet arrays. A regularly self-growing parallel nanosheet array is realized on a curved growth substrate. During electrochemical oxygen production, the ordered array maintains a steady flow of liquids in the microchannels, suppressing the detrimental production of flow-blocking oxygen bubbles typical of randomly oriented nanosheet arrays. Controllable parallel arrays, fully covered fluffy-like ultrathin nanosheets, and amorphous disordered structures altogether enable full-scale design of hierarchical interfaces from the micro- to the atomic scale, significantly improving the otherwise sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution toward industrial ultrafast production. Record-high ultrafast oxygen production of 135 L·min-1·m-2 with high working current of 4000 mA·cm-2 is steadily achieved at a competitively low cell voltage of 2.862 V. These results and related insights lay the basis for further developments in oriented nucleation and growth of crystals beyond classical nucleation approaches, with benefits for large-scale, industrial electrochemical processes as shown here for ultrafast oxygen production.

Optimizing Pt-Based Alloy Electrocatalysts for Improved Hydrogen Evolution Performance in Alkaline Electrolytes: A Comprehensive Review

The splitting of water through electrocatalysis offers a sustainable method for the production of hydrogen. In alkaline electrolytes, the lack of protons forces water dissociation to occur before the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). While pure Pt is the gold standard electrocatalyst in acidic electrolytes, since the 5d orbital in Pt is nearly fully occupied, when it overlaps with the molecular orbital of water, it generates a Pauli repulsion. As a result, the formation of a Pt-H* bond in an alkaline environment is difficult, which slows the HER and negates the benefits of using a pure Pt catalyst. To overcome this limitation, Pt can be alloyed with transition metals, such as Fe, Co, and Ni. This approach has the potential not only to enhance the performance but also to increase the Pt dispersion and decrease its usage, thus overall improving the catalyst's cost-effectiveness. The excellent water adsorption and dissociation ability of transition metals contributes to the generation of a proton-rich local environment near the Pt-based alloy that promotes HER. Significant progress has been achieved in comprehending the alkaline HER mechanism through the manipulation of the structure and composition of electrocatalysts based on the Pt alloy. The objective of this review is to analyze and condense the latest developments in the production of Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts for alkaline HER. It focuses on the modified performance of Pt-based alloys and clarifies the design principles and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts from both an experimental and theoretical perspective. This review also highlights some of the difficulties encountered during the HER and the opportunities for increasing the HER performance. Finally, guidance for the development of more efficient Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts is provided.

Symmetry or asymmetry: which one is the platform of nitrogen vacancies for alkaline hydrogen evolution

Conventional nitrogen vacancies with a symmetric coordination of metal cations (i.e., M1-Nv-M1) play a crucial role in tuning the local environment of the metal sites in metal nitrides and improving their electrochemical activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the symmetric Nv sites, which feature a uniform charge distribution on adjacent metal sites, suffer from sluggish water dissociation kinetics and a poor capability for hydrogen desorption. Here, we fabricated Cr-doped and Nv-rich Co4N nanorods grown on a Ni foam (Cr-Co4N-Nv/NF) with asymmetric Cr-Nv-Co sites to effectively catalyze hydrogen evolution under alkaline conditions, with a low overpotential of 33 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 37 mV dec-1. The experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations collectively reveal that the construction of asymmetric Cr-Nv-Co sites gives rise to the upshift of the d-band center, thus promoting water adsorption and activation. Moreover, asymmetric Nv sites allow a balance between hydrogen adsorption and desorption, which avoids the limited desorption process over the symmetric Co-Nv-Co sites.

Low-Dimensional High-Entropy Alloys for Advanced Electrocatalytic Reactions

Low-dimensional high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanomaterials are widely employed as electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions, due to their inherent advantages, including high electron mobility, rich catalytically active site, optimal electronic structure. Moreover, the high-entropy, lattice distortion, and sluggish diffusion effects also enable them to be promising electrocatalysts. A thorough understanding on the structure-activity relationships of low-dimensional HEA catalyst play a huge role in the future pursuit of more efficient electrocatalysts. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of low-dimensional HEA nanomaterials for efficient catalytic energy conversion. By systematically discussing the fundamentals of HEA and properties of low-dimensional nanostructures, we highlight the advantages of low-dimensional HEAs. Subsequently, we also present many low-dimensional HEA catalysts for electrocatalytic reactions, aiming to gain a better understanding on the structure-activity relationship. Finally, a series of upcoming challenges and issues are also thoroughly proposed as well as their future directions.

Synergistic material modification-induced optimization of interfacial charge transfer and surface hydrogen adsorption

Being chemically stable, low cost and made from abundant resources, titanium dioxide (TiO2) possesses the most desired advantages for photocatalytic applications. However, the intrinsic limits of high surface hydrogen adsorption energy, wide band gap, low separation rate and rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers greatly hamper its utilization. To address these issues, the present work combines density functional theory (DFT) calculations with rational modifications of TiO2 with nickel doping and an ultra-thin shield of fluorinated carbon (FNT) for application in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Comprehensive studies imply that the synergistic modifications not only optimize the surface H adsorption, but also facilitate the interfacial charge transfer and simultaneously prevent the photochemical and chemical corrosion of the catalysts. In good agreement with the theoretical predictions, the resulting FNT photocatalysts demonstrate an optimal HER efficiency of 13.0 mmol g-1 h-1, nearly 33-times and over three-times beyond that of the pristine TiO2 (0.4 mmol g-1 h-1) and the Ni-doped TiO2 (4.2 mmol g-1 h-1), respectively. Moreover, the composite also exhibits excellent stability with a well-reproducible HER performance over a 66-hour cyclic HER test of 15 cycles.

Synergistically Regulating the Electronic Structure of CoS by Cation and Anion Dual-Doping for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Precisely regulating the electronic construction of the reactive center is an essential method to improve the electrocatalysis, but achieving efficient multifunctional characteristics remains a challenge. Herein, CoS sample dual-doped by Cu and F atoms, as bifunctional electrocatalyst, is designed and synthesized for water electrolysis. According to the experimental results, Cu atom doping can perform primary electronic adjustment and obtain bifunctional properties, and then the electronic structure is adjusted for the second time to achieve an optimal state by introducing F atom. Meanwhile, this dual-doping strategy will result in lattice distortion and expose more active sites. As expected, dual-doped Cu-F-CoS show the brilliant electrocatalytic activity, revealing ultralow overpotentials (59 mV for HER, 213 mV for OER) at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. Besides, it also exhibits distinguished water electrolysis activity with cell voltage as low as 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 . Our work can provide an atomic-level perception for adjusting the electronic construction of reactive sites by means of dual-doping engineering and put forward a contributing path for the electrocatalysts with multifunctional designing.

Mn-Oxygen Compounds Coordinated Ruthenium Sites with Deprotonated and Low Oxophilic Microenvironments for Membrane Electrolyzer-Based H2 -Production

Among the platinum-group metals, ruthenium (Ru), with a low water dissociation energy, is considered a promising alternative to substitute Pt for catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, optimizing the adsorption-desorption energies of H* and OH* intermediates on Ru catalytic sites is extremely desirable but remains challenging. Inspired by the natural catalytic characteristics of Mn-oxygen complex, this study reports to design Mn-oxygen compounds coordinated Ru sites (MOC-Ru) with deprotonated and low oxophilic microenvironments for modulating the adsorption-desorption of H* and OH* to promote HER kinetics. Benefiting from the unique advantages of MOC structures, including weakened HOH bond at interface, electron donation ability, and deprotonation capability, the MOC-Ru exhibits extremely low overpotential and ultralong stability in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Experimental observations and theoretical calculations elucidate that the MOC can accelerate water dissociation kinetics and promote OH* desorption in alkaline conditions and trigger the long-range H* spillover for H2 -release in acid conditions. The outstanding activity and stability of membrane electrolyzer display that the MOC-Ru catalyst holds great potential as cathode for H2 -production. This study provides essential insights into the crucial roles of deprotonated and low oxophilic microenvironments in HER catalysis and offers a new pathway to create an efficient water-splitting cathode.

Balancing Volmer Step by Superhydrophilic Dual-Active Domains for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

The reaction kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is largely determined by balancing the Volmer step in alkaline media. Bifunctionality as a proposed strategy can divide the work of water dissociation and intermediates (OH* and H*) adsorption/desorption. However, sluggish OH* desorption plagues water re-adsorption, which leads to poisoning effects of active sites. Some active sites may even directly act as spectators and do not participate in the reaction. Furthermore, the activity comparison under approximate nanostructure between bifunctional effect and single-exposed active sites is not fully understood. Here, a facile three-step strategy is adopted to successfully grow molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) on cobalt-containing nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co-NCNTs), forming obvious dual active domains. The active sites on domains of Co-NCNTs and MoS2  and the tuned electronic structure at the heterointerface trigger the bifunctional effect to balance the Volmer step and improve the catalytic activity. The HER driven by the bifunctional effect can significantly optimize the Gibbs free energy of water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption, resulting in fast reaction kinetics and superior catalytic performance. As a result, the Co-NCNTs/MoS2  catalyst outperforms other HER electrocatalysts with low overpotential (58 and 84 mV at 10 mA cm-2  in alkaline and neutral conditions, respectively), exceptional stability, and negligible degradation.

Atomic-scale insights into the interfacial charge transfer in a NiO/CeO2 heterostructure for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

To understand the underlying mechanism of the interfacial charge transfer and local chemical state variation in the nonprecious-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, a model system of the NiO/CeO₂ heterostructure was chosen for investigation using a combination of the advanced electron microscopic characterization and first-principles calculations. The results directly proved that interfacial charge transfer occurs from Ni to Ce, leading to reduction in the valence state of Ce and increased formation of V_O. This would optimize ΔG_H* and facilitate the hydrogen evolution process, resulting in outstanding HER performance in 1 M KOH with a low overpotential of 99 mV at the current density of 10 mA•cm^-2 and a modest Tafel slope of 78.4 mV•dec^-1 for the NiO/CeO₂ heterostructure sample. Therefore, the improved HER performance could be attributed to the synergistic coupling interactions and electron redistribution at the interface of NiO and CeO₂. These results concretely demonstrate the direct determination of the interfacial structure of the heterostructure and provide atomistic insights to unravel the underlying mechanism of interfacial charge transfer induced HER performance improvement.

Tailoring a local acid-like microenvironment for efficient neutral hydrogen evolution

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction in neutral media is listed as the most difficult challenges of energy catalysis due to the sluggish kinetics. Herein, the Ir-H_xWO₃ catalyst is readily synthesized and exhibits enhanced performance for neutral hydrogen evolution reaction. H_xWO₃ support is functioned as proton sponge to create a local acid-like microenvironment around Ir metal sites by spontaneous injection of protons to WO₃, as evidenced by spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis. Rationalize revitalized lattice-hydrogen species located in the interface are coupled with H_ad atoms on metallic Ir surfaces via thermodynamically favorable Volmer-Tafel steps, and thereby a fast kinetics. Elaborated Ir-H_xWO₃ demonstrates acid-like activity with a low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and low Tafel slope of 28 mV dec^-1, which are even comparable to those in acidic environment. The concept exemplified in this work offer the possibilities for tailoring local reaction microenvironment to regulate catalytic activity and pathway.

Surface and near-surface engineering design of transition metal catalysts for promoting water splitting

Transition metal catalysts are widely used in the field of hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The surface state and near-surface environment of the catalysts greatly affect the efficiency of hydrogen production. Therefore, the rational design of surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts can significantly improve the performance of water electrolysis. This review systematically introduces surface engineering strategies, including heteroatom doping, vacancy engineering, strain regulation, heterojunction effect, and surface reconstruction. These strategies optimize the surface electronic structure of the catalysts, expose more active sites, and promote the formation of highly active species, ultimately enhancing water electrolysis performance. Furthermore, near-surface engineering strategies, such as surface wettability, three-dimensional structure, high-curvature structure, external field assistance, and extra ion addition, are thoroughly discussed. These strategies expedite the mass transfer of reactants and gas products, improve the local chemical environment near the catalyst surface, and contribute toward achieving an industrial-level current density for overall water splitting. Finally, the key challenges faced by surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts are highlighted and potential solutions are proposed. This review offers essential guidelines for the design and development of efficient transition metal catalysts for water electrolysis.

Vanadium-induced synthesis of amorphous V-Co-P nanoparticles for an enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a vital role for the production of pure hydrogen with zero carbon release. Developing high efficiency non-noble metal electrocatalysts could reduce its cost. Here, vanadium doped cobalt phosphide grown on carbon cloth (CC) was synthesized by the low temperature electrodeposition-phosphorization method. The influence of V dopants on the structural, morphological, and electrocatalytic performance of V_x-Co_1-x-P composites was also investigated in-depth. Impressively, the optimized amorphous V_0.1-Co_0.9-P nano-electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 50 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel value of 48.5 mV dec^-1 in alkaline media. The results showed that V dopants in the composite change its crystal structure from the crystalline phase to the amorphous phase, resulting in the introduction of V-O sites, which regulate the electron density of the active sites and the exposure of surface active sites and thus promote the electrocatalytic HER process. This work provides a novel idea for the fabrication of high-efficiency metal phosphide based electrocatalysts.

Electrochemically Generated Carbanions Enable Isomerizing Allylation and Allenylation of Aldehydes with Alkenes and Alkynes

The direct coupling of aldehydes with petrochemical feedstock alkenes and alkynes would represent a practical and streamlined approach for allylation and allenylation chemistry. However, conventional approaches commonly require preactivated substrates or strong bases to generate allylic or propargylic carbanions and only afford branched allylation or propargylation products. Developing a mild and selective approach to access synthetically useful linear allylation and allenylation products is highly desirable, albeit with formidable challenges. We report a strategy using hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to generate a carbanion from weakly acidic sp³ C-H bonds (pK_a ∼ 35-40) under mild reaction conditions, obviating the use of strong bases, Schlenk techniques, and multistep procedures. The cathodically generated carbanion reverses the typical reaction selectivity to afford unconventional isomerizing allylation and allenylation products (125 examples). The generation of carbanions was monitored and identified by in situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroelectrochemistry. Furthermore, we extended this protocol to the generation of other carbanions and their application in coupling reactions between alcohols with carbanions. The appealing features of this approach include mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance, unconventional chemo- and regioselectivity, and the diverse utility of products, which includes offering direct access to diene luminophores and bioactive scaffolds. We also performed cyclic voltammetry, control experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to rationalize the observed reaction selectivity and mechanism.

Hydrogen-bond induced and hetero coupling dual effects in N-doped carbon coated CrN/Ni nanosheets for efficient alkaline freshwater/seawater hydrogen evolution

Developing efficient and robust non-precious-metal-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is highly desirable but remains quite challenging for alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis. In the present study, we report a theory-guided design and synthesis of a nickel foam (NF) supported N-doped carbon-coated (NC) nickel (Ni)/chromium nitride (CrN) nanosheets (NC@CrN/Ni) as a highly active and durable electrocatalyst. Our theoretical calculation firstly reveals that CrN/Ni heterostructure can greatly promote the H₂O dissociation via hydrogen-bond induced effect, and the N site can be optimized by hetero coupling to achieve a facile hydrogen associative desorption, thereby significantly boosting alkaline HER. Guided by theoretical calculation, we prepared the nickel-based metal-organic framework as a precursor, and introduced the Cr by the subsequent hydrothermal treatment, finally obtained the target catalyst by ammonia pyrolysis. Such a simple process ensures the exposure of abundant accessible active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared NC@CrN/Ni catalyst exhibits outstanding performance in both alkaline freshwater and seawater, with the respective overpotential of only 24 and 28 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, respectively. More impressively, the catalyst also possesses superior durability in the constant-current test of 50 h at the different current densities of 10, 100, and 1000 mA cm^-2.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Nickel Molybdenum Phosphide Sheets for Efficient Seawater Splitting

Hydrogen is emerging as an alternative clean fuel; however, its dependency on freshwater will be a threat to a sustainable environment. Seawater, an unlimited source, can be an alternative, but its salt-rich nature causes corrosion and introduces several competing reactions, hindering its use. To overcome these, a unique catalyst composed of porous sheets of nitrogen-doped NiMo₃ P (N-NiMo₃ P) having a sheet size of several microns is designed. The presence of large homogenous pores in the basal plane of these sheets makes them catalytically more active and ensures faster mass transfer. The introduction of N and Ni into MoP significantly tunes the electronic density of Mo, surface chemistry, and metal-non-metal bond lengths, optimizing surface energies, creating new active sites, and increasing electrical conductivity. The presence of metal-nitrogen bonds and surface polyanions increases the stability and improves anti-corrosive properties against chlorine chemistry. Ultimately, the N-NiMo₃ P sheets show remarkable performance as it only requires overpotentials of 23 and 35 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction, and it catalyzes full water splitting at 1.52 and 1.55 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH and seawater, respectively. Hence, structural and compositional control can make catalysts effective in realizing low-cost hydrogen directly from seawater.

Hydrogen Radical-Induced Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction at a Low Potential

Realizing efficient hydrogenation of N₂ molecules in the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is crucial in achieving high activity at a low potential because it theoretically requires a higher equilibrium potential than other steps. Analogous to metal hydride complexes for N₂ reduction, achieving this step by chemical hydrogenation can weaken the potential dependence of the initial hydrogenation process. However, this strategy is rarely reported in the electrocatalytic NRR, and the catalytic mechanism remains ambiguous and lacks experimental evidence. Here, we show a highly efficient electrocatalyst (ruthenium single atoms anchored on graphdiyne/graphene sandwich structures) with a hydrogen radical-transferring mechanism, in which graphdiyne (GDY) generates hydrogen radicals (H^•), which can effectively activate N₂ to generate NNH radicals (^•NNH). A dual-active site is constructed to suppress competing hydrogen evolution, where hydrogen preferentially adsorbs on GDY and Ru single atoms serve as the adsorption site of ^•NNH to promote further hydrogenation of NH₃ synthesis. As a result, high activity and selectivity are obtained simultaneously at -0.1 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Our findings illustrate a novel hydrogen transfer mechanism that can greatly reduce the potential and maintain the high activity and selectivity in NRR and provide powerful guidelines for the design concept of electrocatalysts.

Hierarchical NiOx nanotube arrays/CoP nanosheets heterostructure enables robust alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Rational design of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for scalable and sustainable hydrogen production from economical water-alkali splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that coupling NiO_x and CoP could effectively boost overall HER kinetics through lowing the H₂O dissociation barrier, accelerating the OH* transfer process, and providing the rapid H* migration kinetics as well as the appropriate H* energetics. Based on these findings, we successfully prepared a three-dimensional (3D) self-supported electrode of ultrathin CoP nanosheets directly grown on the surface-oxidized Ni nanotube arrays via a simple and scalable electrochemical synthesis method. As expected, such a heterostructure electrode exhibits superior alkaline HER performance with low overpotentials of 51 and 164 mV to drive the current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm^-2, respectively, outperforming most of the efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.

IrPd Nanoalloy-Structured Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Efficient and pH-Universal Water Splitting

The lack of high efficiency and pH-universal bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hinders the large-scale production of green hydrogen. Here, an IrPd electrocatalyst supported on ketjenblack that exhibits outstanding bifunctional performance for both HER and OER at wide pH conditions is presented. The optimized IrPd catalyst exhibits a specific activity of 4.46 and 3.98 A mg_Ir ^-1 in the overpotential of 100 and 370 mV for HER and OER, respectively, in alkaline conditions. When applied to the anion exchange membrane electrolyzer, the Ir₄₄ Pd₅₆ /KB catalyst shows a stability of >20 h at a current of 250 mA cm^-2 for water decomposition, indicating promising prospects for practical applications. Beyond offering an advanced electrocatalyst, this work also guides the rational design of desirable bifunctional electrocatalysts for HER and OER by regulating the microenvironments and electronic structures of metal catalytic sites for diverse catalysis.
