Near-Ideal Xylene Selectivity in Adaptive Molecular Pillar[ n]arene Crystals

A Pillar[5]arene-Containing Metal-Organic Framework for Rapid and Highly Capable Adsorption of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Mustard gas causes irreversible damage upon inhalation or contact with the human body. Consequently, the development of adsorbents for effective interception of mustard gas at low concentrations and high flow rates is an urgent necessity. Here we report a stable porous pillar[5]arene-containing metal-organic framework (MOF) based on zirconium (EtP5-Zr-scu), demonstrating that embedding pillar[5]arene units in MOFs can provide specific binding sites for efficient adsorption of a mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). EtP5-Zr-scu achieves a higher capacity and more rapid adsorption compared to its counterpart without embedded pillar[5]arene units (H4tcpt-Zr-scu) and perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) alone. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance reveal that the enhanced performance of EtP5-Zr-scu is derived from the host-guest complexation between CEES and pillar[5]arene moieties. Moreover, breakthrough experiments confirmed that the interception performance of EtP5-Zr-scu against CEES (800 ppm, 120 mL/min) was significantly improved (566 min/g) compared with H4tcpt-Zr-scu (353 min/g) and EtP5 (0.873 min/g), attributed to the integration of open channels with specific recognition sites. This work marks a significant advancement in the development of macrocycle-incorporated crystalline framework materials with recognition sites for the efficient capture of guest molecules.

Supramolecular Assembly Frameworks (SAFs): Shaping the Future of Functional Materials

Supramolecular assembly frameworks (SAFs) represent a new category of porous materials, utilizing non-covalent interactions, setting them apart from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This category includes but is not restricted to hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks. SAFs stand out for their outstanding porosity, crystallinity, and stability, alongside unique dissolution-recrystallization dynamics that enable significant structural and functional modifications. Crucially, their non-covalent assembly strategies allow for a balanced manipulation of porosity, symmetry, crystallinity, and dimensions, facilitating the creation of advanced crystalline porous materials unattainable through conventional covalent or coordination bond synthesis. Despite their considerable promise in overcoming several limitations inherent to MOFs and COFs, particularly in terms of solution-processability, SAFs have received relatively little attention in recent literature. This Minireview aims to shed light on standout SAFs, exploring their design principles, synthesis strategies, and characterization methods. It emphasizes their distinctive features and the broad spectrum of potential applications across various domains, aiming to catalyze further development and practical application within the scientific community.

Highly Efficient Separation of BTEX via Amide Naphthotube Cavity-Confined Tandem C/N-H···π Interactions

The separation of BTEX [benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene (EB), and xylene isomers] poses a huge challenge in the industry, attributed to their similar structures and physical properties. Supramolecular compounds show great promise for hydrocarbon separation. Herein, we designed two pairs of endo-functionalized amide naphthotubes with methyl and benzyl side chains, which were first employed as chromatographic separation materials and exhibited high shape-selectivity for BTEX. In particular, the amide naphthotubes with methyl side chains provided complete separation toward BTEX and anti-3a showed high selectivity for the p-xylene over other isomers with αPX/OX = 9.34, αPX/MX = 5.50, and αPX/EB = 4.30. The mechanism of BTEX separation originates from the synergistic effect of specially confined tandem N-H···π and C-H···π interactions toward aromatic compounds. The findings of this research show promise for practical applications in efficiently separating crucial aromatic isomers.

Separation of cyclohexanol from cyclohexanol/cyclohexene mixtures by crystals of pillar[6]arene containing three benzoquinone units

Here, we develop a new absorbent for efficient separation of cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) and cyclohexene (CHA-ene) by using crystals of pillar[6]arene with three benzoquinone units (P3QA). P3QA crystals are found to show remarkable selectivity for CHA-ol in 50 : 50 (v/v) CHA-ol : CHA-ene mixtures with a purity of 95.2%, along with vapochromic behavior.

Pillar[5]arenes decorated with six-membered-ring aromatics at all the substitution positions

Macrocyclic molecules have characteristic properties different from linear ones, such as high symmetry and guest-inclusion ability. To bring drastic changes to these properties, direct introduction of many substituents is a challenging but effective tool. Herein, we attain direct installation of ten six-membered-ring aromatic π-units into both rims of a pillar[5]arene. In contrast to previous pillar[n]arenes with less hindered five-membered-ring units, which showed conformational complexity and crushed crystal structures, the per-phenyl-substituted pillar[5]arene has a cylinder-shaped crystal structure with a dichloromethane inside the cavity and is obtained as a single pair of D 5-symmetric enantiomers. The average dihedral angles between the core and peripheral benzene rings sharply increase from 38° to 66°. These differences indicate the importance of local steric repulsion on both rims for determining the structures and properties of macrocycles.

Vapochromic separation of toluene and pyridine azeotropes using adaptive macrocycle co-crystals

The separation of toluene (Tol) and pyridine (Py) azeotropes is significant in the chemical industry. Herein, we present a new method for the energy-efficient separation of Tol and Py using pillar[5]arene-based adaptive macrocycle co-crystals (MCCs) that can selectively separate Py from a Py/Tol equimolar mixture with 99.2% purity, accompanied by vapochromic behavior from white to yellow.

Gate-opening Induced by C8 Aromatics in a Double Diamondoid Coordination Network

Coordination networks (CNs) that undergo guest-induced structural transformations are of topical interest thanks to their potential utility in separations and storage applications. Herein, we report a double diamondoid (ddi) topology CN, [Ni2(bimpz)2(bdc)2(H2O)] n or X-ddi-2-Ni (H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, bimpz = 3,6-bis(imidazol-1-yl)pyridazine), that undergoes structural transformations induced by C8 isomers, i.e., xylenes (o-xylene, OX; m-xylene, MX; p-xylene, PX) and ethylbenzene (EB). X-ddi-2-Ni was characterized by single-crystal to single-crystal transformations from a nonporous phase, X-ddi-2-Ni-β, to isostructural C8-loaded phases, namely X-ddi-2-Ni-OX, X-ddi-2-Ni-MX, X-ddi-2-Ni-PX and X-ddi-2-Ni-EB. X-ddi-2-Ni accommodates two C8 isomers per Ni unit, resulting in relatively high uptake (ca. 50 wt %), but with low selectivity toward C8 isomers as found using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas chromatography (GC). In addition, a narrow range of gate-opening pressures for each isomer was determined from dynamic vapor sorption, consistent with the nonadaptable nature of the C8-loaded phase determined crystallographically, also supported by modeling.

In Situ Transformation of an Amorphous Supramolecular Coating to a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Membrane to Trigger Selective Gas Permeation

We introduce a "solution-processing-transformation" strategy, deploying solvent vapor as scaffolds, to fabricate high-quality hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) membranes. This strategy can overcome the mismatch in processing conditions and crystal growth thermodynamics faced during the facile solution processing of the membrane. The procedure includes the vapor-trigged in situ transformation of dense amorphous supramolecules to crystalline HOF-16, with HOF-11 as the transient state. The mechanism involves a vapor-activated dissolution-precipitation equilibrium shifting and hydrogen bonding-guided molecule rearrangement, elucidated through combined experimental and theoretical analysis. Upon removal of the molecular scaffolds, the resulting HOF-16 membranes showcase significant improvement in hydrogen separation performance over their amorphous counterparts and previously reported HOF membranes. The method's broad applicability is evidenced by successfully extending it to other substrates and HOF structures. This study provides a fundamental understanding of guest-induced ordered supramolecular assembly and paves the way for the advanced manufacture of high-performance HOF membranes for gas separation processes.

Solid-State Emissive Pillar[6]arene Derivative Having Alternate Methylene and Nitrogen Bridges

Macrocyclic arenes show conformational adaptability, which allows host-guest complexations with the size-matched guest molecules. However, their emission properties are often poor in the solid states due to the self-absorption. Herein, we newly synthesized pillar[6]arene derivatives having alternate methylene and nitrogen bridging structures. Solvatochromic study reveals that the nitrogen-embedding into the cyclic structures can strengthen the intramolecular charge transfer (CT) nature compared to that of the linear nitrogen-bridged precursor. Owing to the large Stokes shift in the solid state, one of the nitrogen-embedded pillar[6]arenes shows high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL=0.36). Furthermore, it displays a turn-off sensing ability toward nitrobenzene (NB) vapor; a fluorescence quenching is observed when exposed to the NB vapor. From the structural analysis before and after the exposure of NB vapor, the amorphous nitrogen-embedded pillar[6]arene efficiently co-crystallize with NB and formed non-emissive intermolecular CT complexes with NB.

Ester-functionalized pillar[6]arene as the gas chromatographic stationary phase with high-resolution performance towards the challenging isomers of xylenes, diethylbenzenes, and ethyltoluenes

This work presents the first example of the utilization of polar ester group functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-OAc) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P6A-C10-OAc column showed a high column efficiency of 5393 plates/m and moderate polar nature. Its resolving capability and retention behaviors were investigated for a mixture of 20 analytes and more than a dozen isomers from apolar to polar in nature. As evidenced, the P6A-C10-OAc column achieved high-resolution separations of all the analytes and good inertness. Importantly, it exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for high resolution of the challenging isomers of xylenes, diethylbenzenes, ethyltoluenes, and halobenzenes over the commercial HP-5 (5% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), HP-35 (25% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), and PEG-20M (polyethylene glycol) columns.

Entropy driven separation of xylene isomers on graphitic carbon adsorbents

Separation of xylene isomers remains one of the most important and challenging applications of adsorption-based separations in petrochemical industry. Despite the sustainable success of zeolite-based separations a search for efficient adsorbents selective for xylenes, especially para-xylene, is constantly ongoing. In this work, a potentially scalable chromatographic separation of all three xylenes was achieved on graphitic carbon sorbents, including a self-packed sorbent based on an oligo-graphene. A curious feature of this separation is stronger retention of para-xylene than meta- and, in some conditions, even than ortho-xylene. Noticeably, separation selectivity between para- and meta-isomers does not depend on temperature. Apparently, lower entropy of para-xylene in solution due to its higher molecular symmetry leads to a lesser adsorption entropy loss, which makes its adsorption statistically more likely. The concept of using carbon adsorbents for entropy driven chromatography separations may be useful for the isolation of xylenes from their mixture and, possibly, for other positional isomers separation.

Clamparene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Application in Spontaneous Formation of 3D Porous Crystals

Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Confinement of p-Xylene in the Pores of a Bilanthanide Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Selective Recognition

The rapid and accurate sensing of p-xylene, an essential raw material with a multi-billion-dollar market, in xylene mixture is of great significance in industry; however, the highly similar molecular structures, energy levels, and spectral characteristics of xylene isomers make the selective recognition extremely challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibiting tailorable pores and potential binding sites provide prospects for xylene sensing but a comprehensive understanding of the pore effect is still elusive, primarily due to the intricacies involved in the sensing process. Herein, we reported a robust bilanthanide MOF NKU-999-EuTb with precisely engineered pores to accommodate p-xylene, of which the binding sites were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and dynamic magnetic susceptibilities. NKU-999-EuTb exhibits high-performance in selective recognition for p-xylene towards its isomers. Through a systematical study, it was revealed that absorbing p-xylene into the pores governs the sensing performance. This work provides insights for developing advanced sensing materials for complex isomers.

Stereoselective Single Step Cyclization to Give Belt-Functionalized Pillar[6]arenes

Two macrocycles were synthesized through cyclization reactions of secondary benzylic alcohols, giving pillar[6]arenes with a methyl substituent at each belt position. These macrocycles form stereoselectively with only the rtctct isomer with alternating up and down orientations of the belt methyl groups definitively identified. Isolated yields were modest (7 and 9%), but the macrocycles are prepared in a single step from either a commercially available alcohol or a very readily prepared precursor. X-ray crystal structures of the macrocycles indicate they have a capsule-like structure, which is far from the conventional pillar shape. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the energy barrier required to obtain the pillar conformation is significantly higher for these belt-functionalized macrocycles than for conventional belt-unfunctionalized pillar[6]arenes.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Adsorption and Diffusion of C8 Aromatic Isomers in MIL-47(V)

The separation of C8 aromatic isomers (oX: o-xylene, pX: p-xylene, mX: m-xylene, and EB: ethylbenzene) remains an enormous challenge in industrial production due to their similar molecular structures and physical properties. Porous materials with suitable pore structures and selective recognition sites to discriminate the slight structural differences of isomers are imminently needed. In this paper, MIL-47(V) with a three-dimensional (3D) grid structure of 10.5 × 10.5 Å2 and a one-dimensional (1D) diamond channel was selected as the adsorbent. However, the mechanism of the adsorption and separation of C8 aromatic isomers in porous materials still needs to be understood. Given the importance of C8 aromatic isomers' confinement in MIL-47(V) for adsorption and diffusion applications, it is important to understand C8 aromatic isomers' behavior in MIL-47(V). Here, we demonstrated from a simulation perspective that metal-organic frameworks MIL-47(V) with one-dimensional (1D) diamond channels can identify C8 aromatic isomers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have shown that organic ligands with guest response sites of MIL-47(V) can effectively distinguish between C8 aromatic isomers by adaptation to the shape of a specific isomer. MIL-47(V) has high adsorption and an excellent separation sequence between C8 aromatic isomers: oX > pX ≈ mX > EB. Significant differences exist in π-π superposition interactions between C8 aromatic isomers and between C8 aromatic isomers and the skeletons. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the unique pore structure and guest response characteristics of MIL-47(V). This work is identified as a supplementary instruction to experimental research and is expected to provide profound insights into research on developing C8 aromatic isomers' adsorption and separation and theoretical support.

Highly Selective p-Xylene Separation from Mixtures of C8 Aromatics by a Nonporous Molecular Apohost

High and increasing production of separation of C8 aromatic isomers demands the development of purification methods that are efficient, scalable, and inexpensive, especially for p-xylene, PX, the largest volume C8 commodity. Herein, we report that 4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (TPBD), a molecular compound that can be prepared and scaled up via solid-state synthesis, exhibits exceptional PX selectivity over each of the other C8 isomers, o-xylene (OX), m-xylene (MX), and ethylbenzene (EB). The apohost or α form of TPBD was found to exhibit conformational polymorphism in the solid state enabled by rotation of its triazole and benzene rings. TPBD-αI and TPBD-αII are nonporous polymorphs that transformed to the same PX inclusion compound, TPBD-PX, upon contact with liquid PX. TPBD enabled highly selective capture of PX, as established by competitive slurry experiments involving various molar ratios in binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics. Binary selectivity values for PX as determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography ranged from 22.4 to 108.4, setting new benchmarks for both PX/MX (70.3) and PX/EB (59.9) selectivity as well as close to benchmark selectivity for PX/OX (108.4). To our knowledge, TPBD is the first material of any class to exhibit such high across-the-board PX selectivity from quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics under ambient conditions. Crystallographic and computational studies provide structural insight into the PX binding site in TPBD-PX, whereas thermal stability and capture kinetics were determined by variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and slurry tests, respectively. That TPBD offers benchmark PX selectivity and facile recyclability makes it a prototypal molecular compound for PX purification or capture under ambient conditions.

Switching Adsorbent Layered Material that Enables Stepwise Capture of C8 Aromatics via Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations

Separation of the C8 aromatic isomers, xylenes (PX, MX, and OX) and ethylbenzene (EB), is important to the petrochemical industry. Whereas physisorptive separation is an energy-efficient alternative to current processes, such as distillation, physisorbents do not generally exhibit strong C8 selectivity. Herein, we report the mixed-linker square lattice (sql) coordination network [Zn2(sba)2(bis)]n·mDMF (sql-4,5-Zn, H2sba or 4 = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid, bis or 5 = trans-4,4'-bis(1-imidazolyl)stilbene) and its C8 sorption properties. sql-4,5-Zn was found to exhibit high uptake capacity for liquid C8 aromatics (∼20.2 wt %), and to the best of our knowledge, it is the first sorbent to exhibit selectivity for PX, EB, and MX over OX for binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures from gas chromatography. Single-crystal structures of narrow-pore, intermediate-pore, and large-pore phases provided insight into the phase transformations, which were enabled by flexibility of the linker ligands and changes in the square grid geometry and interlayer distances. This work adds to the library of two-dimensional coordination networks that exhibit high uptake, thanks to clay-like expansion, and strong selectivity, thanks to shape-selective binding sites, for C8 isomers.

Separating Xylene Isomers with a Calcium Metal-Organic Framework

The purification of p-xylene (pX) from its xylene isomers represents a challenging but important industrial process. Herein, we report the efficient separation of pX from its ortho- and meta- isomers by a microporous calcium-based metal-organic framework material (HIAM-203) with a flexible skeleton. At 30 °C, all three isomers are accommodated but the adsorption kinetics of o-xylene (oX) and m-xylene (mX) are substantially slower than that of pX, and at an elevated temperature of 120 °C, oX and mX are fully excluded while pX can be adsorbed. Multicomponent column breakthrough measurements and vapor-phase/liquid-phase adsorption experiments have demonstrated the capability of HIAM-203 for efficient separation of xylene isomers. Ab initio calculations have provided useful information for understanding the adsorption mechanism.

Smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts

Innovative design of smart organic materials is of great importance for the advancement of modern technology. Macrocycle hosts, possessing cyclic skeletons, intrinsic cavities, and specific guest binding properties, have demonstrated pronounced potential for the elaborate fabrication of a variety of functional organic materials with smart stimuli-responsive characteristics. In this tutorial review, we outline the current development of smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts as key building blocks, focusing on the design principles and functional mechanisms of the tailored systems. Three main types of macrocycle-based smart organic materials are exemplified as follows according to the distinct forms of construction patterns: (1) supramolecular polymeric materials and nanoassemblies; (2) adaptive molecular crystals; (3) smart porous organic materials. The responsive performances of macrocycle-containing smart materials in versatile aspects, including mechanically adaptive polymers, soft optoelectronic devices, data encryption, drug delivery systems, artificial transmembrane channels, crystalline-state gas adsorption/separation, and fluorescence sensing, are illustrated by discussing the representative studies as paradigms, where the roles of macrocycles in these systems are highlighted. We also provide in the conclusion part the perspectives and remaining challenges in this burgeoning field.

Industrial Separation Challenges: How Does Supramolecular Chemistry Help?

The chemical industry and the chemical processes underscoring it are under intense scrutiny as the demands for the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices are increasing. Traditional industrial separation systems, such as thermally driven distillation for hydrocarbon purification, are energy intensive. The development of more energy efficient separation technologies is thus emerging as a critical need, as is the creation of new materials that may permit a transition away from classic distillation-based separations. In this Perspective, we focus on porous organic cages and macrocycles that can adsorb guest molecules selectively through various host-guest interactions and permit molecular sieving behavior at the molecular level. Specifically, we summarize the recent advances where receptor-based adsorbent materials have been shown to be effective for industrially relevant hydrocarbon separations, highlighting the underlying host-guest interactions that impart selectivity and permit the observed separations. This approach to sustainable separations is currently in its infancy. Nevertheless, several receptor-based adsorbent materials with extrinsic/intrinsic voids or special functional groups have been reported in recent years that can selectively capture various targeted guest molecules. We believe that the understanding of the interactions that drive selectivity at a molecular level accruing from these initial systems will permit an ever-more-effective "bottom-up" design of tailored molecular sieves that, in due course, will allow adsorbent material-based approaches to separations to transition from the laboratory into an industrial setting.

Potential of nonporous adaptive crystals for hydrocarbon separation

Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Efficient separation of monobromotoluene isomers by nonporous adaptive perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene crystals

Herein we report an efficient adsorptive separation approach for monobromotoluene isomers using nonporous adaptive crystals of perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5). The purity of separated m-bromotoluene from an equal volume mixture of m-bromotoluene and o-bromotoluene reaches 96.6% in one cycle and the adsorbent BrP5 can be reused without losing separation performance.

Separation of Cyclohexanone and Cyclohexanol by Adaptive Pillar[5]arene Cocrystals Accompanied by Vapochromic Behavior

The separation of cyclohexanone (CHA-one) and cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) mixtures is of great importance in the chemical industry. Current technology exploits multiple steps of energy-intensive rectification due to their close boiling points. Herein, we report a new and energy-efficient adsorptive separation method employing binary adaptive macrocycle cocrystals (MCCs) built with π-electron-rich pillar[5]arene (P5) and an electron-deficient naphthalenediimide derivative (NDI) that can selectively separate CHA-one from an equimolar CHA-one/CHA-ol mixture with >99% purity. Intriguingly, this adsorptive separation process is accompanied by vapochromic behavior from pink to dark brown. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the adsorptive selectivity and vapochromic property are derived from the CHA-one vapor inside the cocrystal lattice voids triggering solid-state structural transformations to yield charge-transfer (CT) cocrystals. Moreover, the reversible transformations make the cocrystalline materials highly recyclable.

Balancing on a Knife's Edge: Studies on the Synthesis of Pillar[6]arene Derivatives

Pillar[6]arenes are established as crucial building blocks in supramolecular chemistry; however, they can be difficult to synthesize, particularly in the absence of large solubilizing substituents. In this work, we explore variability in literature syntheses of pillar[6]arene derivatives and suggest that the outcome is dependent on whether oligomeric intermediates stay in solution long enough for the thermodynamically favorable macrocyclization to occur. We demonstrate that in a previously capricious BF₃·OEt₂-mediated procedure, ≤5 mol % of a Brønsted acid can slow down the reaction to favor macrocycle formation.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Separation of Hexane Isomers Using 3-Dimensional Linkers

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly tunable materials with potential for use as porous media in non-thermal adsorption or membrane-based separations. However, many separations target molecules with sub-angstrom differences in size, requiring precise control over the pore size. Herein, we demonstrate that this precise control can be achieved by installing a three-dimensional linker in an MOF with one-dimensional channels. Specifically, we synthesized single crystals and bulk powder of NU-2002, an isostructural framework to MIL-53 with bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid as the organic linker component. Using variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies, we show that increasing linker dimensionality limits structural breathing relative to MIL-53. Furthermore, single-component adsorption isotherms demonstrate the efficacy of this material for separating hexane isomers based on the different sizes and shapes of these isomers.

Rigid-Flexible Hybrid Porous Molecular Crystals with Guest-Induced Reversible Crystallinity

A weak CH/O hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) with both rigidity and flexibility that could easily and reversibly switch from a non-crystalline to a crystalline phase was constructed. The specific solvent molecule acts as a "key" to control the crystallinity, while the highly rigid triangle macrocycle as the building block is the "lock". The introduction and removal of the "key" could influence the local flexibility of the whole framework and lead to switchable crystallinity. Furthermore, the obtained HOF exhibits excellent separation efficiency for benzene and cyclohexane (94.4 %).

Per-Arylation of Pillar[n]arenes: An Effective Tool to Modify the Properties of Macrocycles

Installation of various substituents is a reliable and versatile way to alter the properties of macrocyclic molecules, but high-yield and controlled methods are not always available especially for multifold reactions. Herein, we report 10- and 12-fold introduction of aryl substituents onto both rims of cylinder-shaped pillar[n]arenes, which usually have alkoxy substituents slanting to the cylinder axes. Although alkoxy pillar[5]arenes exist as D₅-symmetric enantiomeric pairs, arylated pillar[5]arenes provide crushed single-crystal structures and stereoisomerism including C₂-symmetric conformations depending on the aryl groups. Pillar[n]arenes with 2-benzofuranyl groups display bright fluorescence with quantum yields of 88-90% and no host-guest complexation with electron-deficient molecules in solution due to large deviation from alkoxy compounds. A benzofuran-appended pillar[6]arene instead captures small gaseous molecules in the solid state, probably owing to outside spaces surrounded by aromatic rings.

A Porous Polyaromatic Solid for Vapor Adsorption of Xylene with High Efficiency, Selectivity, and Reusability

Development of porous materials capable of capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene and its derivatives, with high efficiency, selectivity, and reusability is highly demanded. Here we report unusual vapor adsorption behavior toward VOCs by a new porous solid, composed of a polyaromatic capsule bearing a spherical nanocavity with subnano-sized windows. Without prior crystallization and high-temperature vacuum drying, the porous polyaromatic solid exhibits the following five features: vapor adsorption of benzene over cyclohexane with 90 % selectivity, high affinity toward o-xylene over benzene and toluene with >80 % selectivity, ortho-selective adsorption ability (>50 %) from mixed xylene isomers, tight VOCs storage even under high temperature and vacuum conditions, and at least 5 times reusability for xylene adsorption. The observed adsorption abilities are accomplished at ambient temperature and pressure within 1 h, which has not been demonstrated by organic/inorganic porous materials reported previously.

Separation of Low-Molecular-Weight Organics by Water-Soluble Macrocyclic Arenes

In this study, we fabricate a series of water-soluble anionic macrocyclic arenes, including pillar[5]arene (WP5), pillar[6]arene (WP6), leaning pillar[6]arene (WLT6), and biphenyl-extended pillar[6]arene (WBpP6), which show different separation capabilities toward low-molecular-weight organics, such as short chain haloalkanes, cyclic aliphatics, and aromatics, in water. The liquid-liquid distribution experiments are carried out at room temperature. The separation factor for low-molecular-weight organics is evaluated in the extraction of equimolar mixtures. WP6 demonstrates a high extraction efficiency of up to 89% in separating toluene/methylcyclohexane mixtures. These adsorbents also have the advantages of rapid adsorption, high separation efficiency, remarkable selectivity, and good recyclability. This work not only expands the application scope of macrocyclic chemistry, but also has practical research value for organics separation and water purification.

Energy‐Efficient Iodine Uptake by a Molecular Host⋅Guest Crystal

Recently, porous organic crystals (POC) based on macrocycles have shown exceptional sorption and separation properties. Yet, the impact of guest presence inside a macrocycle prior to adsorption has not been studied. Here we show that the inclusion of trimethoxybenzyl-azaphosphatrane in the macrocycle cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) affords molecular porous host⋅guest crystals (PHGC-1) with radically new properties. Unactivated hydrated PHGC-1 adsorbed iodine spontaneously and selectively at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The absence of (i) heat for material synthesis, (ii) moisture sensitivity, and (iii) energy-intensive steps for pore activation are attractive attributes for decreasing the energy costs. ¹ H NMR and DOSY were instrumental for monitoring the H₂ O/I₂ exchange. PHGC-1 crystals are non-centrosymmetric and I₂ -doped crystals showed markedly different second harmonic generation (SHG), which suggests that iodine doping could be used to modulate the non-linear optical properties of porous organic crystals.

Efficient Purification of 2,6-Lutidine by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Pillararenes

2,6-Lutidine (2,6-LT) is a very important raw material in the chemical industry, but the impurities of 3-picoline (3-PC) and 4-picoline (4-PC) existing in 2,6-LT seriously affect its quality. Considering different molecular sizes of these three compounds, herein, we exploit nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) of pillararenes as purifying agents for removal of 3-PC and 4-PC in 2,6-LT. We find that per-ethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) can selectively adsorb 3-PC and 4-PC, while negligible capture of 2,6-LT is observed, resulting in improvement of the purity of 2,6-LT up to 94.9%. Single-crystal structures indicate that the excellent selectivity originates from the size match and complexation stability differences among different host/guest pairs. After purification, NACs of EtP5 can be easily regenerated and used in the next run without a significant performance degradation.

Adsorptive separation of para-xylene by nonporous adaptive crystals of phenanthrene[2]arene

In this work, we developed a new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale. Meanwhile, the synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene (pX) from xylene isomers. The crystal structure revealed that one host molecule can adsorb one pX molecule to form the 1@pX complex, in which pX is located in the cavity of the host.

A new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale was developed. The synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene from xylene isomers.

Discrimination of xylene isomers in a stacked coordination polymer

The separation and purification of xylene isomers is an industrially important but challenging process. Developing highly efficient adsorbents is crucial for the implementation of simulated moving bed technology for industrial separation of these isomers. Herein, we report a stacked one-dimensional coordination polymer {[Mn(dhbq)(H 2 O) 2 ], H 2 dhbq = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone} that exhibits an ideal molecular recognition and sieving of xylene isomers. Its distinct temperature-adsorbate–dependent adsorption behavior enables full separation of p -, m -, and o -xylene isomers in both vapor and liquid phases. The delicate stimuli-responsive swelling of the structure imparts this porous material with exceptionally high flexibility and stability, well-balanced adsorption capacity, high selectivity, and fast kinetics at conditions mimicking industrial settings. This study may offer an alternative approach for energy-efficient and adsorption-based industrial xylene separation and purification processes.

Recent Advances in the Applications of Water-soluble Resorcinarene-based Deep Cavitands

We review here the use of container molecules known as cavitands for performing organic reactions in water. Central to these endeavors are binding forces found in water, and among the strongest of these is the hydrophobic effect. We describe how the hydrophobic effect can be used to drive organic molecule guests into the confined space of cavitand hosts. Other forces participating in guest binding include cation-π interactions, chalcogen bonding and even hydrogen bonding to water involved in the host structure. The reactions of guests take advantage of their contortions in the limited space of the cavitands which enhance macrocyclic and site-selective processes. The cavitands are applied to the removal of organic pollutants from water and to the separation of isomeric guests. Progress is described on maneuvering the containers from stoichiometric participation to roles as catalysts.

Unveiling the Impact of Diverse Morphology of Ionic Porous Organic Polymers with Mechanistic Insight on the Ultrafast and Selective Removal of Toxic Pollutants from Water

In recent years, detoxification of contaminated water by different types of materials has received a great deal of attention. However, lack of methodical in-depth understanding of the role of various physical properties of such materials toward improved sorption performance limits their applicable efficiencies. In perspective, decontamination of oxoanion-polluted water by porous materials with different morphologies are unexplored due to a shortfall of proper synthetic strategies. Herein, systematic optimization of sequestration performance toward efficient decontamination of toxic oxoanion-polluted water has been demonstrated by varying the morphologies of an imidazolium-based cationic polymeric network [ionic porous organic polymers (iPOP-5)]. Detailed morphological evolution showed that the chemically stable ionic polymer exhibited several morphologies such as spherical, nanotube, and flakes. Among them, the flakelike material [iPOP-5(F)] showed ultrafast capture efficiency (up to ∼99 and >85% removal within less than 1 min) with high saturation capacities (301 and 610 mg g^-1) toward chromate [Cr(VI)] and perrhenate [Re(VII)] oxoanions, respectively, in water. On the other hand, the spherical-shaped polymer [iPOP-5(S)] exhibited relatively slow removal kinetics (>5 min for complete removal) toward both Cr(VI) and Re(VII) oxoanions. Notably, iPOP-5(F) eliminated Cr(VI) and Re(VII) selectively even in the presence of excessive (∼100-fold) competing anions from both high- and low-concentration contaminated water. Further, the compound demonstrated efficient separation of those oxoanions in a wide pH range as well as in various water systems (such as potable, lake, river, sea, and tannery water) with superior regeneration ability. Moreover, as a proof of concept, a column exchange-based water treatment experiment by iPOP-5(F) has been performed to reduce the concentration of Cr(VI) and Re(VII) below the WHO permitted level. Mechanistic investigation suggested that the rare in situ exfoliation of flakes into thin nanosheets helps to achieve ultrafast capture efficiency. In addition, detailed theoretical binding energy calculations were executed in order to understand such rapid, selective binding of chromate and perrhenate oxoanions with iPOP-5(F) over other nonmetal-based anions.

Adsorptive separation of picoline isomers by adaptive calix[3]acridan crystals

The exploration of macrocycle-based nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) for adsorption and separation has been one of the hotspots in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. Herein, we developed calix[3]acridan-based NACs to separate industrially important 4-picoline from its isomer mixtures with over 93.8% purity.

Performance and selectivity of amphiphilic pillar[5]arene as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography

Pillar[n]arenes possess highly symmetrical and rigid pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity that afford their reliable host-guest recognition interactions towards matched guests. In this work, a novel amphiphilic pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-2NH₂) was designed, synthesized and employed as the stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. To date, they have not been reported in the field of chromatography. The P5A-C10-2NH₂ capillary column (10 m × 0.25 mm i.d.) was prepared by static coating method. Its capillary column exhibited moderate polarity and column efficiency of 2265 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120 °C. As evidenced, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column achieved advantageous separation performance for a mixture of 24 analytes of diverse types and exhibited different chromatographic selectivity from two pillar[5]arene derivatives columns and commercial HP-35 column with 35%-phenyl-methylpolysiloxane. Moreover, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column baseline resolved more than a dozen positional and cis-trans isomers. Furthermore, the separation mechanism of P5A-C10-2NH₂ column was discussed by quantum chemical calculations. In addition, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column had high thermal stability and excellent separation repeatability 0.01-0.04% for run-to-run, 0.03-0.17% for day-to-day and 3.2-3.9% for column-to-column. The special amphiphilic structure and high resolution for various analytes reveal the good potential of pillararenes as a new class of stationary phases for chromatographic analyses. Moreover, the TPG column achieved improved thermal stability over the GIL column and excellent repeatability.

Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Membrane Based on Pillararene-Intercalated MXene Nanosheets for Efficient Water Purification

Discharge of antibiotic-containing wastewater causes environmental pollution and threatens biological and human health. An efficient treatment method for this wastewater is urgently required. We prepared inorganic-organic hybrid MXene-pillararene nanosheets with a large lateral size (5-8 μm). The hybrid nanosheets were stacked on supports via vacuum-assisted filtration to prepare membranes with regular parallel slits and an interlayer spacing of 1.36 nm, which were used to purify antibiotic-containing water. Permeance through the membrane increased 100-fold compared with most polymeric and other two-dimensional nanofiltration membranes with similar rejection. This high permeance and rejection was attributed to the large lateral size of the nanosheets, regular interlayer spacing, and electrostatic interaction between the membrane and antibiotics. These membranes will broaden the applications of lamellar materials for the separation of high-value-added drugs in academia and industry.
