Double [4 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction To Approach a Large Acene with Even-Number Linearly Fused Benzene Rings: 6,9,16,19-Tetraphenyl-1.20,4.5,10.11,14.15-Tetrabenzooctatwistacene

Hexabenzoheptacene: A Longitudinally Multihelicene Nanocarbon with Local Aromaticity and Enhanced Stability

We report the synthesis of a longitudinally helical molecular nanocarbon, hexabenzoheptacene (HBH), along with its dimethylated derivative (HBH-Me), which are composed of six benzene rings periodically benzannulated to both zigzag edges of a heptacene core. This benzannulation pattern endows the resulting nanocarbons with a helical heptacene core and local aromaticity, imparting enhanced solubility and stability to the system. The chiral HBH-Me adopts a more highly twisted conformation with an end-to-end twist angle of 95°, enabling the separation of the enantiomers. Both HBH and HBH-Me can be facilely oxidized into their corresponding dications, which exhibit enhanced planarity and aromaticity upon loss of electrons. Notably, both longitudinally helical nanocarbons readily promote solid state packing into two-dimensional (2D) arrangement. Single-crystal microbelts of HBH-Me show hole mobility up to 0.62 cm2 V-1 s-1, illustrating the promising potential of these longitudinally helical molecules for organic electronic devices.

Straightforward Synthesis of Pentagon-Embedded Expanded [11]Helicenes for Radiative Cooling Property

Two new pentagon-embedded carbo[11]helicenes have been designed and synthesized in a three-step process, which are the first example of carbo[11]helicenes through the post-functionalization of twistacene. TD-DFT analyses indicate that both of them possess high enantiomerization barriers of 42.29 kcal/mol and 40.76 kcal/mol, respectively. They emit strong red fluorescence and can be chemically oxidized into stable cationic radicals upon addition of AgSbF6 evidenced by the bathochromic-shifted absorption spectra and the appearance of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals. In addition, such helical derivatives can be chosen as radiative cooling materials in a glass model house, and the maxima of 5.4 °C for the former and 6.5 °C for the latter are found in the comparative tests, which might be caused by the NIR reflective response.

Modulating Strain in Twisted Pyrene-Fused Azaacenes

The design and synthesis of strained aromatics provide an additional insight into the relationship between structure and properties. In the last years, several approaches to twist pyrene-fused azaacenes have been developed that allow to introduce twists of different sizes. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a new set of twisted dibenzotetraazahexacenes constituted by fused pyrene and quinoxaline residues that have been distorted by introducing increasingly larger substituents on the quinoxaline residues. Their twisted structure has been demonstrated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, absorption, fluorescence, electrochemical and theoretical studies shine light on the effects of the substituents and twists on the optoelectronic and redox properties.

Helical fused 1,2:8,9-dibenzozethrene oligomers with up to 201° end-to-end twist: "one-pot" synthesis and chiral resolution

Twisted polyarenes with persistent chirality are desirable but their synthesis has remained a challenge. In this study, we present a "one-pot" synthesis of 1,2:8,9-dibenzozethrene (DBZ) and its vertically fused dimers and trimers using nickel-catalyzed cyclo-oligomerization reactions. X-ray crystallographic analysis confirmed highly twisted helical structures that consist of equal parts left- and right-handed enantiomers. Notably, the end-to-end twist between the terminal anthracene units measured 66°, 130°, and 201° for the DBZ monomer, dimer, and trimer, respectively, setting a new record among twisted polyarenes. Furthermore, the chiral resolution by HPLC yielded two enantiomers for the fused DBZ dimer and trimer, both of which maintained stable configurations and showed absorption dissymmetry factors of around 0.008-0.009. Additionally, their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated, which exhibited a chain-length dependence.

A Heptacene Analogue Entailing a Quinoidal Benzodi[7]annulene (7/6/7 Ring) Core with a Tunable Configuration and Multiple Redox Properties

Non-benzenoid acenes containing heptagons have received increasing attention. We herein report a heptacene analogue containing a quinoidal benzodi[7]annulene core. Derivatives of this new non-benzenoid acene were obtained through an efficient synthetic strategy involving an Aldol condensation and a Diels-Alder reaction as key steps. The configuration of this heptacene analogue can be modulated from a wavy to a curved one by just varying the substituents from a (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl group to a 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl (Trip) group. When mesityl (Mes) groups are linked to the heptagons, the resulting non-benzenoid acene displays polymorphism with a tunable configuration from a curved to a wavy one upon varying the crystallization conditions. In addition, this new non-benzenoid acene can be oxidized or reduced by NOSbF₆ or KC₈ to the respective radical cation or radical anion. Compared with the neutral acene, the radical anion shows a wavy configuration and the central hexagon becomes aromatic.

Synthesis and Absorption Properties of Long Acenoacenes

Acenes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons composed of linearly fused benzene rings have received immense attention due to their performance as semiconductors in organic optoelectronic applications. Their appealing physicochemical properties, such as extended delocalization, high charge carrier mobilities, narrow HOMO-LOMO gaps and partially radical character in the ground state make them very attractive targets for many potential applications. However, the intrinsic synthetic challenges of unsubstituted members such as high reactivity and poor solubility are still limiting factors for their wider exploitation. Herein, we report a simple general synthesis of a new family of angularly fused acenoacenes with improved stability compared to their isoelectronic linear counterparts. The synthesis and comprehensive characterization of pentacenopentacene, pentacenohexacene and hexacenohexacene, with lengths between decacene and dodecacene, are disclosed.

Pentagon-Containing π-Expanded Systems: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

We have designed and synthesized three novel twistacene-modified enlarged pentagon-containing π-systems (6 and 9) with mismatched structures. The introduction of electron-withdrawing cyclopenta rings in the parent skeleton effectively stabilizes the electron-rich arenes. Their optoelectronic properties were studied via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In addition, chemical oxidation of the as-prepared compounds with nitrosonium hexafluoroantimonate could form the corresponding cationic radicals.

Anthrathiadiazole Derivatives: Synthesis, Physical Properties and Two-photon Absorption

Anthrathiadiazole is a key synthon for the construction of large azaacenes, however, the attachment of different substituents onto the skeleton of anthrathiadiazole is difficult but highly desirable because it could be easy to enrich the structures of azaacenes. Here, it is demonstrated that anthrathiadiazole derivatives with -Br, -CN, and -OCH₃ groups could be easily constructed through a simple [4+2] cycloaddition reaction between a,a,a',a'-tetrabromo-o-xylenes derivatives and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-dione. The structures of the as-prepared compounds with different substituents were carefully characterized. Moreover, the basic physical properties of the as-prepared anthrathiadiazole derivatives were fully investigated, where the cyano-substituted derivative (BTH-CN) has the highest stability and the methoxy-substituted derivative (BTH-OCH₃ ) is easy to be oxidized. Moreover, the two-photon absorption (TPA) characteristics of different anthrathiadiazoles are also studied by using the femtosecond Z-scan technique. The results show that the fused anthrathiadiazole skeletons possess large TPA cross-section values δ₂ in the range of 3000-5000 GM, where the nature, position and strength of the substituted groups have strong effect on these values.

Benzo-Fused Perylene Oligomers with up to 13 Linearly Annulated Rings

The longer acenes with more than six linearly fused six-membered rings are still fascinating chemists and physicists because of their unique photophysical properties and their high potential for organic electronics applications. Unfortunately, with increasing size (seven and more rings) these compounds rapidly lose chemical stability. Besides kinetic and chemical stabilization approaches introducing either bulky or electron-withdrawing groups or both, such systems also have been stabilized by peri-annulation. Although strictly spoken, these peri-annulated compounds are no longer real acenes, they have fascinating properties as well. Herein, we describe the first synthesis of a new series of peri-annulated acenes with up to 13 linearly fused rings, which is unprecedented till date. Furthermore, this new series contains perylene units connected through benzene rings along their [b,k]edges, responsible for unique absorption and emission properties.

Tuning Nonlinear Optical Behavior by Incorporation of the Chalcogenophene into Twistacenes

Four chalcogenophene-fused acenes containing O, S, Se, or Te, respectively, were presented, and the chalcogenophene effect on linear and nonlinear optics was systematically investigated. Their excited-state absorption performance and two-photon absorption (TPA) capacity could be modulated by the incorporating chalcogen atoms. The experimental results showed that the heavy chalcogen facilitated the intersystem crossing resulting in the presence of the triplet state absorption for PyPSe and PyPTe, and the TPA capacity gradually increased with the atomic size of the chalcogens. The theoretical calculation inferred that their nonlinear optical performance was closely related to the contributions of the chalcogenophene component to heterotwistacenes in the final excited state. In addition, PyPTe was able to work under various laser pulses from femtoseconds to nanoseconds.

cAAC-Stabilized 9,10-diboraanthracenes-Acenes with Open-Shell Singlet Biradical Ground States

Narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps and high charge-carrier mobilities make larger acenes potentially high-efficient materials for organic electronic applications. The performance of such molecules was shown to significantly increase with increasing number of fused benzene rings. Bulk quantities, however, can only be obtained reliably for acenes up to heptacene. Theoretically, (oligo)acenes and (poly)acenes are predicted to have open-shell singlet biradical and polyradical ground states, respectively, for which experimental evidence is still scarce. We have now been able to dramatically lower the HOMO-LUMO gap of acenes without the necessity of unfavorable elongation of their conjugated π system, by incorporating two boron atoms into the anthracene skeleton. Stabilizing the boron centers with cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes gives neutral 9,10-diboraanthracenes, which are shown to feature disjointed, open-shell singlet biradical ground states.

Increasing and dispersing strain in pyrene-fused azaacenes

A new strategy to obtain distorted pyrene-fused azaacenes is reported. The careful alignment and selection of substituents give rise to highly twisted pyrene-fused azaacenes. A combined global and local theoretical analysis shows how the strain is generated and dispersed across the aromatic backbone. Furthermore, simulation of the observed optoelectronic properties shines light on the structural factors that govern the properties of twisted pyrene-fused azaacenes.

Recent Progress in High Linearly Fused Polycyclic Conjugated Hydrocarbons (PCHs, n > 6) with Well-Defined Structures

Although polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) and their analogues have gained great progress in the fields of organic photoelectronic materials, the in-depth study on present PCHs is still limited to hexacene or below because longer PCHs are insoluble, unstable, and tediously synthesized. Very recently, various strategies including on-surface synthesis are developed to address these issues and many higher novel PCHs are constructed. Therefore, it is necessary to review these advances. Here, the recent synthetic approach, basic physicochemical properties, single-crystal packing behaviors, and potential applications of the linearly fused PCHs (higher than hexacene), including acenes or π-extended acenes with fused six-membered benzenoid rings and other four-membered, five-membered or even seven-membered and eight-membered fused compounds, are summarized.

Exploring Possible Surrogates for Kobayashi's Aryne Precursors

A class of aryne precursors, that is, 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonates, has been developed through well-established synthetic routes, which allow the formation of arynes under relatively mild conditions. All the aryne precursors were obtained from phenols and 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle reagent with relatively low toxicity, and subjected to nucleophilic addition reactions, providing addition products in yields of 24 to 92%, and to cycloaddition reactions, affording cycloadducts in yields up to 80%. This work provides interesting insights into the mechanisms of aryne generation. In addition, 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonate was successfully employed in the total synthesis of (±)-aporphine.

2,6,10-Triphenylenotriyne: a star-shaped trisaryne

The synthesis and reactivity of an efficient precursor of a triphenylene-based trisaryne synthon is reported for the first time.

Revisiting Kekulene: Synthesis and Single-Molecule Imaging

Four decades after the first (and only) reported synthesis of kekulene, this emblematic cycloarene has been obtained again through an improved route involving the construction of a key synthetic intermediate, 5,6,8,9-tetrahydrobenzo[m]tetraphene, by means of a double Diels-Alder reaction between styrene and a versatile benzodiyne synthon. Ultra-high-resolution AFM imaging of single molecules of kekulene and computational calculations provide additional support for a molecular structure with a significant degree of bond localization in accordance with the resonance structure predicted by the Clar model.

Recent Progress in Organic Electron Transport Materials in Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Organic n-type materials (e.g., fullerene derivatives, naphthalene diimides (NDIs), perylene diimides (PDIs), azaacene-based molecules, and n-type conjugated polymers) are demonstrated as promising electron transport layers (ETLs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (p-i-n PSCs), because these materials have several advantages such as easy synthesis and purification, tunable frontier molecular orbitals, decent electron mobility, low cost, good solubility in different organic solvents, and reasonable chemical/thermal stability. Considering these positive factors, approaches toward achieving effective p-i-n PSCs with these organic materials as ETLs are highlighted in this Review. Moreover, organic structures, electron transport properties, working function of electrodes caused by ETLs, and key relevant parameters (PCE and stability) of p-i-n PSCs are presented. Hopefully, this Review will provide fundamental guidance for future development of new organic n-type materials as ETLs for more efficient p-i-n PSCs.

X-Shaped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Optical Properties and Tunable Assembly Ability

Although a number of synthetic methodologies have been developed to prepare stable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), much less research has been devoted to functionalizing the peripheries of molecules to tune the self-assembly ability or introduce functional groups without altering their photophysical properties. Herein, we report twisted "X"-shaped molecules prepared through annulation of hexacene with benzoanthracene on the zigzag edge, and an investigation of their photophysical properties and self-assembly properties. The shape-complementary "X"-shaped molecules prefer to dimerize, while the π-extension would lead to one-dimensional π-stacking. Our findings give some insights into the design of stable PAHs without disturbing the electronic structures.

A Practical General Method for the Preparation of Long Acenes

The field of long acenes, the narrowest of the zig-zag graphene nanoribbons, has been an area of significant interest in the past decade because of its potential applications in organic electronics, spintronics and plasmonics. However the low solubility and high reactivity of these compounds has so far hindered their preparation on large scales. We report here a concise strategy for the synthesis of higher acenes through Diels-Alder condensation of arynes with a protected tetraene ketone. After deprotection by cleavage of the ketal, the obtained monoketone precursors cleanly yield the corresponding acenes through quantitative cheletropic thermal decarbonylation in the solid state, at moderate temperatures of 155 to 205 °C. This approach allows the preparation of heptacene, benzo[a]hexacene, cis- and trans-dibenzopentacene and offers a valuable new method for the synthesis of even larger acenes.

Helical Ullazine-Quinoxaline-Based Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylides (PAMYs) are powerful building blocks in the bottom-up synthesis of internally nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) through 1,3-cycloaddition reactions. In this work, the cycloaddition reaction of PAMYs to asymmetric ortho-quinones is presented, which, in contrast to the addition to symmetric para-quinones, facilitates subsequent condensation reactions and allows the synthesis of three helical N-PAHs with ullazine-quinoxaline (UQ-1-3) backbones. UQ-1 and UQ-2 possess two helical centers; however, single-crystal X-ray analysis together with the computational modeling of UQ-3 elucidate the formation of only the thermodynamically most stable geometry with four helical centers in a (P,P,M,M) configuration. For the series UQ-1-3, the number of redox steps is directly correlated with the number of ullazine or quinoxaline units incorporated into the targeted molecular backbones. A detailed investigation of the spectroscopic and magnetic properties of the radical cation and anion as well as the dication and dianion species by in situ EPR/UV/Vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry is provided. The excellent optical and redox properties combined with helical geometries render them possibly applicable as chiral emitter or ambipolar charge transport material in organic electronics.

Synthesis, Optoelectronic and Self-Assembly Properties of Diazadioxaacene Derivatives

Two novel diazadioxaacene derivatives (ADOP and ADOQ) have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Their single crystal analyses disclose that molecule ADOP forms a twisted topology configuration, whereas ADOQ adopts reclining-chair architecture. Both of them emit strong blue fluorescence in organic solvents. Moreover, they can self-assemble to form regular nanobelts and nanowires, respectively, via a simple surfactant-assisted method.

Synthesis, Physical Properties and Memory Device Application of a Twelve-Ring Fused Twistheteroacene

Developing new organic conjugated materials for high density memory devices is highly desirable. In this research, a novel donor-acceptor-type twelve-ring fused twistheteroacene, 2,7,19,24-tetra-tert-butyl-13,30-didodecyl-9,17,26,34-tetraphenyl benzo[8',9']triphenyleno[2',3':7,8]dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxino[1,2,3,4-lmn]dibenzo[6',7':10',11']tetraceno[2',3':5,6][1,4]dioxino[2,3-f][3,8]phenanthroline-12,14,29,31(13H,30H)-tetraone (DPyN) has been synthesized and characterized. It displays high thermal stability, possesses a broad absorption band centered at 510 and 538 nm, and emits red fluorescence in organic solvents. A solution-processed memory device with DPyN as an active element shows an excellent memory performance with an ON/OFF current ratio of 10^3.46 :1 and a threshold voltage of -2.44 V.

Synthesis and physical properties of triphenylamine-functionalized twistacenes: blue-emitting fluorophores

Two novel triphenylamine-decorated twistacenes SNPy and DNPy have been synthesized and characterized.

A Unique Blend of 2-Fluorenyl-2-anthracene and 2-Anthryl-2-anthracence Showing White Emission and High Charge Mobility

White-light-emitting materials with high mobility are necessary for organic white-light-emitting transistors, which can be used for self-driven OLED displays or OLED lighting. In this study, we combined two materials with similar structures-2-fluorenyl-2-anthracene (FlAnt) with blue emission and 2-anthryl-2-anthracence (2A) with greenish-yellow emission-to fabricate OLED devices, which showed unusual solid-state white-light emission with the CIE coordinates (0.33, 0.34) at 10 V. The similar crystal structures ensured that the OTFTs based on mixed FlAnt and 2A showed high mobility of 1.56 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 . This simple method provides new insight into the design of high-performance white-emitting transistor materials and structures.
