Abstract
Anionic silicone surfactants have long been a neglected field. In this paper three anionic silicone surfactants were synthesized first time from dichloromethylvinylsilane through hydrolysis-condensation, "thiol-ene" photo- chemical and then salting reaction. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension, minimum surface area per surfactant molecule and surface pressure at CAC were studied by both surface tension and electrical conductivity. The results showed that they had significant surface activity at the gas/liquid interface and were capable to reduce the surface tension of water to approximately 20 mN m-1 . The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that the three silicone surfactants self-assembled into spherical aggregates of uniform size in aqueous solution above the CAC. The dynamic light scattering results demonstrated that the size of the aggregates was determined to be in the range from 60 to 300 nm at 0.05 mol L-1 and the order of the size of the aggregates is (Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Li<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Na<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 K.

Abstract
Amphiphilic amino acids represent promising scaffolds for biologically active soft matter. In order to understand the bulk self-assembly of amphiphilic amino acids into thermotropic liquid crystalline phases and their biological properties a series of tyrosine ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) was synthesized, carrying a benzoate unit with 0-3 alkoxy chains at the tyrosine unit and a cationic guanidinium head group. Investigation of the mesomorphic properties by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) revealed smectic A bilayers (SmAd) for ILCs with 4-alkoxy- and 3,4-dialkoxybenzoates, whereas ILCs with 3,4,5-trisalkoxybenzoates showed hexagonal columnar mesophases (Colh), while different counterions had only a minor influence. Dielectric measurements revealed a slightly higher dipole moment of non-mesomorphic tyrosine-benzoates as compared to their mesomorphic counterparts. The absence of lipophilic side chains on the benzoate unit was important for the biological activity. Thus, non-mesomorphic tyrosine benzoates and crown ether benzoates devoid of additional side chains at the benzoate unit displayed the highest cytotoxicities (against L929 mouse fibroblast cell line) and antimicrobial activity (against Escherichia coli ΔTolC and Staphylococcus aureus) and promising selectivity ratio in favour of antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
Two new anionic silicone surfactants were synthesized for the first time from dichloromethylvinylsilane or trichlorovinylsilane through hydrolysis-condensation and then thiol-ene reactions. Their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and ESI-MS. The surface tension (γ), critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface pressure at CAC ( Π C A C ${\Pi _{C{\rm{A}}C} }$ ) and minimum surface area per surfactant molecule ( A min ${{A}_{\min } }$ ) were studied by surface tension and electrical conductivity, demonstrating their high surface activity at the gas/liquid interface. Transmission electron microscopy measurements showed that uniform spherical aggregates former in aqueous solution for both surfactants. Moreover, the size of the aggregates was determined to be in the range from 50 to 300 nm by dynamic light scattering.

Abstract
In this work, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study is performed on some cationic surfactants to evaluate the relationship between the molecular structures of the compounds with their aggregation numbers (AGGNs) in aqueous solution at 25 °C. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is combined with the QSAR study to predict the aggregation number of the surfactants. In the ANN analysis, four out of more than 3000 molecular descriptors were used as input variables, and the complete set of 41 cationic surfactants was randomly divided into a training set of 29, a test set of 6, and a validation set of 6 molecules. After that, a multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis was utilized to build a linear model using the same descriptors and the results were compared statistically with those of the ANN analysis. The square of the correlation coefficient (R 2) and root mean square error (RMSE) of the ANN and MLR models (for the whole data set) were 0.9392, 7.84, and 0.5010, 22.52, respectively. The results of the comparison revealed the efficiency of ANN in detecting a correlation between the molecular structure of surfactants and their AGGN values with a high predictive power due to the non-linearity in the studied data. Based on the ANN algorithm, the relative importance of the selected descriptors was computed and arranged in the following descending order: H-047 > ESpm12x > JGI6> Mor20p. Then, the QSAR data was interpreted and the impact of each descriptor on the AGGNs of the molecules were thoroughly discussed. The results showed there is a correlation between each selected descriptor and the AGGN values of the surfactants.

Abstract
In drug delivery, surfactants are used to reduce side effects and to increase drug efficiency. The present work aimed to study the interaction of diphenhydramine hydrochloride (anti-allergic drug) with TX–45 (non-ionic surfactant) in the absence and presence of ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride). The physicochemical parameters were estimated by the surface tension measurement. Various theoretical models (Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and Maeda) were applied to determine the attractive behavior between drug and surfactant mixtures at the surface and in bulk. The drug and surfactant mixtures exhibit synergistic behavior in the absence and presence of ionic liquid. Several energetic parameters were also estimated with the assistance of regular solution approximation and pseudo phase separation model that indicate micelle formation and adsorption of surfactant at the surface is thermodynamically advantageous. The morphology of pure and mixture of amphiphiles has been estimated by the Tanford and Israelachvili theories. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to quantify the attractive behavior of the drug with surfactant with the help of a binding constant (K).

Abstract
Abstract
Novel surfactants with double hydrophilic groups (cocopropane and tallowpropane bis-guanidinium acetates), were synthesized and tested to evaluate both the basic surfactant properties and the unique application performance. Surface tension, conductivity and contact angle measurements were used to study the self-aggregation behavior in aqueous solution. Aggregation parameters were calculated such as adsorption efficiency and effectiveness (pC20 and CAC/C20), the maximum surface excess concentration (Гmax) and minimum surface area permolecule (Amin). The thermodynamic parameters of aggregation based conductivity measurements revealed that the aggregation process was spontaneous and entropy-driven. Compared to DTAC and CTAC, the alkyl bis-guanidinium acetates showed a higher emulsification capacity with both liquid kerosene and soybean oil. The evaluation of antimicrobial activity showed that the alkyl bisguanidinium acetates exhibited strong antibacterial activity against the tested strains at a concentration of 50 ppm.

Abstract
The naturally occurring polyphenolic compound curcumin has shown various medicinal and therapeutic effects. However, there are various challenges associated with curcumin, which limits its biomedical applications, such as its high degradation rate and low aqueous solubility at neutral and alkaline pH. In the present study, efforts have been directed towards trying to resolve such issues by encapsulating curcumin inside the micelles formed by imidazolium-based surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL). The shape and size of the micelles formed by the SAIL have been characterized by using DLS analysis as well as TEM measurements. The photo-physics of curcumin in the presence of ionic liquid (IL) and also with the addition of salt (NaCl) has been explored by using different optical spectroscopic tools. The time-dependent absorption studies have shown that there is relatively higher suppression in the degradation rate of curcumin after encapsulation by the imidazolium-based SAIL in an aqueous medium. The TCSPC studies have revealed that there is deactivation in the nonradiative intramolecular hydrogen transfer process of curcumin in the presence of IL micelles as well as with the addition of salt. Furthermore, the time-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurement has been carried out to figure out the location of curcumin inside the micellar system. In order to correlate all experimental findings, density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at neutral pH media have been performed. It has been found that the van der Waals force of interactions plays a major role in the stabilization of curcumin in the micelles rather than the coulombic forces. It also has been observed that the van der Waals interactions remain unaffected in the presence of salt. However, as revealed by the MD simulation results, the micelles are found to be more compact in size after the addition of salt. The RMSD results show that the micelles formed by the SAIL achieve greater stability after a particular time constraint. Our results have divulged that the SAIL could act as a promising drug delivery system.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) give a wide scope of favorable applications due to their much-upgraded properties. The strong electrostatic interactions between the cationic moiety of IL and the anionic surfactant play a very important role in the assembly of the large aggregates. We have investigated the aggregation behavior of anionic surfactants and IL in aqueous solution. Different temperatures and concentrations of IL have been taken to study the effect on critical micelles concentrations of surfactant. The critical micelle concentration values obtained by conductivity measurements are further confirmed by the fluorescence studies. The method is based on the fit of the experimental obtained raw data of fluorescence spectroscopy to a simple nonlinear category of a Boltzmann type sigmoidal function. Abstract
Biocompatible surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL) was used first to study the deintercalation process of a well-known natural compound piperine (PIP) as an anticancer drug, obtained from PIP-calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) complex under controlled experimental conditions. In this study, we have been exploring the interaction of PIP in SAIL (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate ionic liquid ([C4mim][C8OSO3])), ctDNA, and deintercalation of PIP from the PIP-ctDNA complex through SAIL micelle using various spectroscopic techniques. Absorption, emission, and lifetime decay measurements provide strong evidence of the relocation of PIP molecules from ctDNA to SAIL micelle. Fluorescence quenching and steady-state fluorescence anisotropy were employed to examine the exact location of PIP in different media. Moreover, the surface tension technique was also employed to confirm the release of PIP molecules from the PIP-ctDNA complex in the presence of SAIL. Circular dichroism analysis suggested that SAIL micelle does not perturb the ctDNA structure, which supported the fact that SAIL micelle can be used as a safe vehicle for PIP. Overall, the study highlighted a novel strategy for deintercalation of drug using SAIL because the release of the drug can be controlled over a period by varying the concentration and composition of the SAIL.

Abstract
In the current study, we have examined the interaction amongst an antidepressant drug amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMH) and ethane-1, 2-diyl bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-cetylammoniumacetoxy) dichloride (16-E2-16, a green gemini surfactant) through tensiometric and fluorimetric techniques in aqueous/electrolyte/urea solutions. Significant variations are observed in the various evaluated parameters in the present study. Gemini 16-E2-16 has outstanding surface properties along with a much lower cmc value, demonstrating very little toxicity as well as considerable antimicrobial activity. The cmc values of mixtures decrease through increase in mole fraction (α1) of 16-E2-16, which specifies the nonideality of the solution mixtures, along with demonstrating the occurrence of mixed micellization too. Negative βRub values signify on the whole attractive force of interaction between constituents of mixed micelles. Owing to the incidence of electrolyte NaCl (50 mmol.kg–1), lowering of the micelles’ surface charge happens, resulting in aggregation taking place at lower concentration while the presence of urea (NH2CONH2) halts micellization taking place, which means the cmc value increases in the attendance of urea. The ΔGmo values for all systems were negative along with the presence of electrolyte/urea. The excess free energy (Gex) of studied mixed systems was also estimated and found to be negative for all the systems. Using the fluorescence quenching method, the micelle aggregation number (Nagg) was evaluated and it was found that the contribution of gemini surfactant was always more than that of the AMH and their value enhances in the existence of electrolyte while decreasing in the attendance of NH2CONH2 in the system. In addition, other fluorescence parameters such as micropolarity (I1/I3), dielectric constant (Dexp) as well as Stern–Volmer binding constants (Ksv) of mixed systems were evaluated and the results showed the synergistic performance of the AMH + 16-E2-16 mixtures. Along with tensiometric and fluorimetric techniques, FT-IR spectroscopy was also engaged to reveal the interaction among constituents.

Abstract
In addition to enthalpy–entropy compensation (EEC), anti-enthalpy–entropy compensation (AEEC) phenomenon is also found in literature. The reports on the latter are limited, and analyses and justifications are so far unclear. Herein we present demonstration on the nature and possibility of the AEEC phenomenon. Although literature reports so far have mostly shown linear AEEC, we have found both linear and non-linear dependences. The non-linearity we consider arises from large “free energy window” (FEW) like EEC, recently presented and discussed. Attempts have been made to rationalize the observations in terms of solvation–desolvation phenomenon of the involved processes anticipated in previous studies. We have found that enthalpy and entropy of formation of gaseous and solid materials may also exhibit AEEC, it can be thus classified as a global phenomenon. In addition to AEEC, the phenomenon of no-enthalpy–entropy compensation (NEEC) is also reported. Thus, the phenomena EEC, AEEC and NEEC are thermodynamic puzzles that require close attention and analysis. With the help of wide range of physical chemical processes, an elaborate general understanding of the linear and non-linear AEEC phenomena has been attempted. The experimental data herein used are collected from literature reports, new measurements were not done. A variety of examples have supported possible generality of AEEC.

Abstract
Here, we present how replacing the usual inorganic counter ion with a pharmaceutically active aromatic one can greatly affect the interfacial as well as bulk properties of ionic liquids (ILs). We have synthesized a series of novel drug-based ILs, namely, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium diclofenate ([C n mim][DF]; n = 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14) abbreviated as DF-ILs, wherein DF- is a well-recognized analgesic and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. We show strong synergistic interactions between C n mim+ and aromatic DF- attributed to reduced electrostatic repulsions and increased hydrophobicity from their incorporation, reflecting a 300-fold smaller critical aggregation concentration than that of their Cl- analogue [C n mim][Cl]. Interfacial properties for such strongly associating systems are discussed and clearly established to have remarkably improved properties than those of their Cl- analogues. The decreasing polarity of the cybotactic region of pyrene with increase in the chain length "n" indicates an increased extent of packing of cationic head groups in the Stern layer. DF- ion seems to play a vital role in the formation of the resulting aggregates, as probed by small angle neutron scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The thermodynamical insights of the aggregation process have been studied using isothermal titration calorimetry and temperature-dependent conductivity experiments. Unilamellar vesicles are formed at extremely low concentration, and also it is the first report that puts into picture the formation of vesicles for [C6mim][DF] with such a short chain.

Abstract
Hydrophobic derivatives of tyrosine and tryptophan, viz. octyl and dodecyl esters of tyrosine and octyl ester of tryptophan, are synthesized, and the interfacial and bulk properties in aqueous media are investigated as models for the membrane proteins. Molecular modeling by the density functional theory method is carried out to understand the molecular conformation and geometry for the purpose of determining the packing parameters. Water-induced molecular folding of the esters of both tyrosine and tryptophan, as observed using rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, indicates that the segregation of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks in water is the key to the development of fascinating interfacial property displayed by the aromatic amino acid esters. The unusually high-order morphology of the aggregates, as observed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, is highly uncommon for single-chain amphiphiles and points to the fact that the self-assembly behavior of the present systems resembles that of block copolymers. The study of the growth of mesosized hollow aggregates with internal bilayer structures from tyrosine and tryptophan-based model systems would add to the understanding of biochemistry and biotechnology relevant to the cell membrane. The potential of biocompatible nanostructured motifs as the drug carriers is discussed. The highly functional role played by the aromatic amino acids at the membrane-water interface will be considered with the present amphiphilic models for future perspective.

Abstract
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) containing cleavable carbonate linkages, 1-alkyloxycarbonyloxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides with alkyl chains of 10, 12, and 14 carbon atoms, were synthesized, and their self-assembly behavior and antimicrobial activity were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy studies reveal that carbonate-functionalized ILs form stable thermotropic smectic liquid-crystalline phases over a wide range of temperature. The surface activity and aggregation behavior of these new ILs were investigated by tensiometry, conductometry, potentiometry, and spectrofluorimetry. The size of aggregates was examined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Carbonate-functionalized ILs display a higher adsorption efficiency and a lower critical micelle concentration (cmc) than simple alkyl-chain-substituted ILs. The insertion of a carbonate ester moiety in the alkyl side chain favors adsorption at the air-water interface and micellization in the bulk solution when compared to nonfunctionalized ILs. DLS measurements show that small micellelike aggregates are spontaneously formed above the cmc. Furthermore, carbonate-functionalized ILs were examined for their antimicrobial activity against a panel of clinically relevant microorganisms. Biological activity was found to increase with hydrophobicity. The presence of a carbonate ester moiety significantly enhances the antimicrobial efficiency as compared to nonfunctionalized ILs, with the susceptibility of Staphylococcus sp. toward the action of these compounds being particularly remarkable. It has been demonstrated that the functionalization of the alkyl side chain of the imidazolium salts can not only modify the aggregation behavior but also lead to differences in both efficiency and the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of amphiphilic ILs.
