Electrospinning of calixarene-functionalized polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membranes and application as an adsorbent and catalyst support

The p-diethanolaminomethylcalix[4]arene-incorporated polyacrylonitrile-based facilitated-transport-nanofiber mat for O2/N2 separation

Separation of gases from air mixture is one of the most challenging and laborious separations due to the remarkably uniform molecular size of gas molecules. Therefore, the present study aimed to synthesize polyacrylonitrile-based nanofibers mat(NM) impregnated with p-diethanolaminomethylcalix[4]arene (PAN/p-DEAC4 NM) for the separation of two crucial gases O2 and N2. The affinity of the prepared PAN/p-DEAC4 NM for O2 was examined by optimizing the loading concentration of p-DEAC4 in the range from 5% to 20% (w/v). The results showed remarkable performance of the PAN/p-DEAC4 NM for O2/N2 separation with a superior O2/N2 selectivity of 12.75 and excellent permeance of 10.2 GPU for O2 and 0.8 GPU for N2 at 2 bar. The PAN/p-DEAC4 NM followed a facilitated transport mechanism for the separation of gases and it was revealed that the p-DEAC4 platform in the PAN NM is facilitating the transport of O2 due to its greater affinity towards O2. BET analysis revealed that the prepared NM possesses non-porous morphology with a surface area of 12.69 m2 g-1. SEM micrographs also confirmed the formation of defect-free NM. Thus, this study presents a unique perspective and direction for fabricating highly permeable nanofiber mats for O2/N2 separation.

Wearable Dual-Signal NH3 Sensor with High Sensitivity for Non-invasive Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease

NH₃ gas in human exhaled breath contains abundant physiological information related to human health, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD). Unfortunately, up to now, most wearable NH₃ sensors show inevitable defects (low sensitivity, easy to be interfered by the environment, etc.), which may lead to misdiagnosis of CKD. To solve the above dilemma, a nanoporous, heterogeneous, and dual-signal (optical and electrical) wearable NH₃ sensor mask is developed successfully. More specifically, a polyacrylonitrile/bromocresol green (PAN/BCG) nanofiber film as a visual NH₃ sensor and a polyacrylonitrile/polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide (PAN/PANI/rGO) nanofiber film as a resistive NH₃ sensor are constructed. Due to the high specific surface area and abundant NH₃ binding sites of these two nanofiber films, they exhibit good NH₃ sensing performance. However, although the visual NH₃ sensor (PAN/BCG nanofiber film) is simple without the need of any detecting facilities and quite stable when temperature and humidity change, it shows poor sensitivity and resolution. In comparison, the resistive NH₃ sensor (PAN/PANI/rGO nanofiber film) is of high sensitivity, fast response, and good resolution, but its electrical signal is easily interfered by the external environment (such as humidity, temperature, etc.). Considering that the sensing principles between a visual NH₃ sensor and resistive NH₃ sensor are significantly different, a wearable dual-signal NH₃ sensor containing both a visual NH₃ sensor and resistive NH₃ sensor is further explored. Our data prove that the two sensing signals in this dual-signal NH₃ sensor mask can not only work well without interference with each other but also complement each other to improve the sensing accuracy, indicating its potential application in non-invasive diagnosis of CKD.

Flexible PTh/GQDs/TiO2 composite with superior visible-light photocatalytic properties for rapid degradation pollutants

Flexible fiber membranes for pollutant removal have received increasing attention due to their high adsorption performance and easy recycling characteristics. However, due to the lack of environmentally friendly regeneration, some adsorption membranes have low regeneration efficiency, especially in terms of chemical adsorption, so they lack reusability. This study prepares a series of conducting polymer [PAn (polyaniline) or PPy (polypyrrole) or PTh (polythiophene)] graphene quantum dots (GQDs, the size of GQDs is about 20 nm)/TiO₂ ternary fiber membranes via a facile electrospinning method with chemical deposition. Remarkably, this creates an anatase TiO₂ and π-conjugated system. The combination is beneficial to the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, showing synergistic promotion in both the degradation rate and the degree of decomposition. The UV-vis test shows that the combination of GQDs broadens the optical response threshold of TiO₂, from near ultraviolet region excitation to visible region excitation. At the same time, the conductive polymer load further reduces the energy required for photogenerated electron transfer, which theoretically improves the degradation effect. Photocatalytic degradation tests showed that the PTh/GQDs/TiO₂ fiber membrane exhibited significant high photocatalytic activity of visible-light in the methylene blue (MB) and TC degradation. The degradation rate level is 92.90% and 80.58%, respectively and the MB removal is more than 4 times that of bare TiO₂ membrane. After photocatalytic regeneration four times, the regeneration efficiency can be maintained above 95%. Notably, various experimental results show that the interface charge transfer mechanism between GQDs/TiO₂ and PTh follows the Z-scheme heterojunction, which maximizes the retention of strong reducing electrons and oxidation holes. In the degradation, the active species of ·O₂ ^- and ·OH, make different contributions in the photocatalysts, which oxidize and break down the pollutant molecules into small molecules and then to harmless substances. According to the electronegativity difference of the material itself, PTh acts as electron acceptor in the degradation system, and TiO₂ fiber membrane doped with GQDs acts as electron donor. The present research, not only offers feasibility of the PTh/GQDs/TiO₂ flexible fiber membrane as an environment-friendly catalyst, but also motivates researchers to develop flexible fiber materials for future photocatalytic technology.

Surface Characteristics of Electrospun p-Sulphonated Calix[4]Arene Functionalized Cellulose Acetate Nanofiber and Its Behaviour towards Methylene Blue Adsorption

p-sulphonated calix[4]arene (p-SOCX) functionalized cellulose acetate/graphene oxide (CA/GO) nanofibers were successfully prepared via the electrospinning technique. The presence of p-SOCX within the fiber matrix was ascertained using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Carbon-Hydrogen-Nitrogen-Sulphur elemental analyses. Apparent changes in morphology of the samples were observed under scanning electron microscope where fiber diameters increased with increasing p-SOCX content. Preliminary dye removal test at different pH, dosage, and temperature of functionalized CA/GO nanofiber demonstrates enhanced adsorption capacity of methylene blue in presence of p-SOCX compared to pristine CA nanofiber and CA/GO nanofiber at an optimum pH 8. The highest removal efficiency obtained was 88.84% with initial methylene blue dye concentration of 10 mg/L, adsorbent dosage of 20 mg/10 mL, contact time of 30 min at room temperature ca. 293 K.

Electrospun Sulfonatocalix[4]arene Loaded Blended Nanofibers: Process Optimization and In Vitro Studies

In the past decade, electrospun nanofibers made of biodegradable polymers have been used for different biomedical applications due to their flexible features in terms of surface area to volume ratio, pores, and fiber size, as well as their highly tunable surface properties. Recently, interest is growing in the use of supramolecular structures in combination with electrospun nanofibers for the fabrication of bioactive platforms with improved in vitro responses, to be used for innovative therapeutic treatments. Herein, sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SCX4) was synthesized from p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene and embedded in electrospun nanofibers made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin (GEL). The supramolecular structure of SCX4 and its efficient entrapment into electrospun fibers was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and FTIR analysis, respectively. SEM analysis supported via image analysis enabled the investigation of the fiber morphology at the sub-micrometric scale, showing a drastic reduction in fiber diameters in the presence of SCX4: 267 ± 14 nm (without SCX) to 115 ± 5 nm (3% SCX4). Moreover, it was demonstrated that SCX4 significantly contributes to the hydrophilic properties of the fiber surface, as was confirmed by the reduction in contact angles from 54 ± 1.4° to 31 ± 5.5° as the SCX4 amount increased, while no effects on thermal stability were recognized, as was confirmed by TGA analyses. In vitro tests also confirmed that SCX4 is not cytotoxic, but plays a supporting role in L929 interactions, as was validated by the cell viability of PGC15% after 7 days, with respect to the control. These preliminary but promising data suggest their use for the fabrication of innovative platforms able to bind SCX4 to bioactive compounds and molecules for different therapeutic applications, from molecular recognition to controlled drug delivery.

Headspace Extraction of Chlorobenzenes from Water Using Electrospun Nanofibers Fabricated with Calix[4]arene-Doped Polyurethane-Polysulfone

Chlorobenzenes (CBs) are persistent and potentially have a carcinogenic effect on mammals. Thus, the determination of CBs is essential for human health. Hence, in this study, novel polyurethane−polysulfone/calix[4]arene (PU-PSU/calix[4]arene) nanofibers were synthesized using an electrospinning approach over in-situ coating on a stainless-steel wire. The nanosorbent was comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The SEM analysis depicted the nanofiber’s unique morphology and size distribution in the range of 50−200 nm. To determine the levels of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene, and 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene in water samples, freshly prepared nanosorbent was employed using headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in combination with gas chromatography micro electron capture detector (GC-µECD). Other calixarenes, such as sulfonated calix[4]arene, p-tert-calixarene, and calix[6]arene were also examined, and among the fabricated sorbents, the PU−PSU/calix[4]arene showed the highest efficiency. The key variables of the procedure, including ionic strength, extraction temperature, extraction duration, and desorption conditions were examined. Under optimal conditions, the LOD (0.1−1.0 pg mL−1), the LDR (0.4−1000 pg mL−1), and the R2 > 0.990 were determined. Additionally, the repeatability from fiber to fiber and the intra-day and inter-day reproducibility were determined to be 1.4−6.0, 4.7−10.1, and 0.9−9.7%, respectively. The nanofiber adsorption capacity was found to be 670−720 pg/g for CBs at an initial concentration of 400 pg mL−1. A satisfactory recovery of 80−106% was attained when the suggested method’s application for detecting chlorobenzenes (CBs) in tap water, river water, sewage water, and industrial water was assessed.

Polymer-mediated electrospun nanofibrous mats on supramolecular assembly of nortriptyline in the β-cyclodextrin medium for antibacterial study

With the thought and strong hope of uniqueness and challenging characteristic highlights and importance of nanofibrous mats (NFMs) along with cyclodextrins (CDs) that having a significant opportunity, chances and handling a vital role in hostile to bacterial activities. For the most part, CDs are utilized to upgrade the antibacterial activity through the improvement of solubility, stability, and etc., to any molecule which can bring inside the CDs cavity via the formation of inclusion complexes. Polymer-mediated electrospun nanofibrous mats (PAN NFMs) are utilized as a nanocarrier for antibacterial activity in this article, utilizing nortriptyline (NP) as a reference molecule. As a result, NP forms an inclusion complex with β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD). As a result, the PAN NFMs are able to absorb it, thereby consolidating the complex NP on the nanofibrous surface. Additionally, the soaking of PAN NFMs in NP solution without β-CD was performed for comparison. To characterize the nanofibrous mats of NP/PAN and NP:β-CD-ICs/PAN NFMs, UV absorption, FTIR, Raman, XRD, and SEM techniques were used. The antibacterial activity of NP and NP:β-CD-ICs have been tried against positive control antibiotics by the disc diffusion method. Thus, the action has been improved for NP:β-CD-ICs/PAN NFMs over NP/PAN NFMs because of the solubility upgraded for the NP by the complexation of β-CD.

Design of composite nanosupports and applications thereof in enzyme immobilization: A review

Enzyme immobilization techniques have developed dramatically over the past several decades. Support materials are key in shaping the function of a specific immobilized enzyme. Although they have large specific surface areas and functional active sites, single-component nanomaterials and their surface chemical modification derivatives struggle to meet increasing demand. Thus, composite materials, compounds of two or more materials, have been developed and applied in efficient immobilization through advances in materials science. More methods have been developed and employed to design composite nanomaterials in recent years. These novel composite nanomaterials often show superior physical, chemical, and biological performance as supports in enzyme immobilization, among other applications. In this review, immobilization techniques and their supports are stated first and methods to design and fabricate composite nanomaterials as nanosupports are also shown in the following section. Applications of composite nanosupports in laccase immobilization are discussed as models in the later sections of the paper. This review is intended to help readers gain insight into the design principles of composite nanomaterials for immobilization supports.

Reusable Filters Augmented with Heating Microfibers for Antibacterial and Antiviral Sterilization

Numerous threats to human health and ecosystems on earth exist due to air pollution and the spread of fatal diseases. Airborne pollutants and particulate matter (PM) pose serious public health risks. In addition, the emergence and spread of bacterial and viral diseases constantly threaten public health and safety. Although various approaches have been implemented thus far to protect humans from air pollution and exposure to diseases, several challenges remain to be addressed. In this study, we developed a hybrid air filter consisting of filtration, heating, and thermal insulation layers. The air filtration layer can effectively capture airborne PM₁ particles (less than 1.0 μm in diameter). Furthermore, the heating layer enables the hybrid air filter to generate temperatures above 100 °C, and the insulation layer prevents the heat from being transferred to the other side (e.g., the human skin, if the hybrid air filter is used in a facemask). Since several bacteria and viruses are incapacitated under high temperatures, this hybrid air filter holds great promise for antibacterial and antiviral protection.

Electrospinning fabrication for cloth-like carbon nanofiber films with hierarchical porous structure and their application in deep desulfurization

A strategy for clean fuel by selective adsorption processing was deemed to be convenient and environmental-friendly in past decades. However, the development of adsorption desulfurization was tremendously subject to the fabrication of high-performance adsorbents with large capacity and high stability. Herein, we designed a novel route to fabricate the cloth-like carbon nanofiber film with a hierarchical porous structure by electrospinning. The structure and properties of the cloth-like carbon nanofiber films were determined by a series of characterizations. Subsequently, the desulfurization performance of the cloth-like carbon nanofiber films was examined by the simulated thiophene (TH) oil. Furthermore, the effect of adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity was intensively investigated, such as carbonization temperature, initial concentration and desulfurization temperature. The results found that at optimal calcination temperature of 700 °C, the cloth-like carbon nanofiber films possessed the highest micropore volume (V_mic = 0.185 m³/g) and adsorption capacity (q_e = 96.6 mg/g) at 800 mg/L initial concentration under the adsorption temperature of 25 °C. The results corroborated that the physical properties of the cloth-like carbon nanofiber films with the surface area of 417.8 m²/g, the total pore volume of 0.187 cm³/g and average pore diameter of 1.36 nm had an important influence on the high adsorption capacity. On this basis, the adsorption experimental data were best fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Furthermore, the other highlight of the cloth-like carbon nanofiber films was convenient for the separation from oil, thus achieving the desirable reused performance.

Assembly behaviors of calixarene-based amphiphile and supra-amphiphile and the applications in drug delivery and protein recognition

Calixarene is the third generation of supra-molecular compounds after crown ether and cyclodextrin. Amphiphilic calixarene can be obtained by modulation with both hydrophilic group and hydrophobic alkyl chain. Compared with conventional surfactant, amphiphilic calixarene has much lower critical micelle concentration and is much easier to self-assemble into different morphological aggregates. Calixarene-basedsupra-amphiphile can be designed via noncovalent bonds due to the capability of calixarene to recognize surfactant; the binding of a surfactant with calixarene can decrease the critical micelle concentration of surfactant by several times. The calixarene-surfactant complex can self-aggregate to form spherical micelles, vesicles, and spherical nanoparticles, and the aggregation behavior can be controlled by the structures and the molar ratio of surfactant to calixarene and environmental factors. Calixarene-based amphiphile and supra-amphiphile show low cytotoxicity. They can load drugs and assemble into nanocapsules with drugs. The structure of the calixarene-drug complex can respond to external stimuli, rendering the sustained release of the drug and suggesting its potential application as a drug delivery system. Recently, calixarene has also been found to selectively bind proteins, suggesting its prospect in disease diagnosis and intervention treatment in clinics. This review elaborates on the research progress in the self-assembly behaviors of calixarene-based amphiphile and supra-amphiphile and the applications of the calixarenes in drug delivery and protein recognition. The prospectives for the studies are also provided in this review.

Fabrication, characterization and adsorption properties of cucurbit[7]uril-functionalized polycaprolactone electrospun nanofibrous membranes

The fabrication of electrospun nanofibers comprising cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is reported. Various techniques such as SEM, FTIR, XRD, DSC and TG were utilized to characterize the morphology, composition and properties of the nanofibers. Uniform bead-free electrospun nanofibers were obtained from PCL/CB[7] mixed solutions and the average fiber diameter of the nanofibers increases with the increase of CB[7] content. The nanofibers are composed of a physical mixture of PCL and CB[7], and CB[7] itself is present in the PCL fiber matrix in an uncomplexed state. The static adsorption behavior of the PCL/CB[7] nanofibers towards methylene blue (MB) was also preliminary investigated. The results indicate that the adsorption of MB onto the nanofibrous membranes fits the second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model.

How Does PHEMA Pass through the Cavity of γ-CDs to Create Mismatched Overfit Polypseudorotaxanes?

A syndiotactic-rich PHEMA oligomer ( rr = 74%, DP = 29, PDI = 1.19) was synthesized and subsequently subjected to self-assembly with a varying amount of γ-CDs in its aqueous solution to create mismatched overfit polypseudorotaxanes (PPRs). The inclusion complexation proceeded in an obvious mismatched manner between the cavity of γ-CDs and the cross-sectional area of an incoming PHEMA chain. The 2D-NOESY NMR analysis provided direct evidence indicating that two adjacent pendant hydroxyethyl groups in PHEMA preferably adopt a curled conformation to pass through the cavity of γ-CDs, giving the PPRs characteristics of a mismatched overfit instead of a matched tight-fit crystal structure. The results suggested that the mutual adaption of pendant side chains of HEMA units with the cavity geometry of γ-CDs would play a dominant role in this unfavorable overfit inclusion complexation besides the size of γ-CDs and the stereoregularity of the PHEMA chain.

Recent Progress in Coaxial Electrospinning: New Parameters, Various Structures, and Wide Applications

Electrospinning, a common method for synthesizing 1D nanostructures, has contributed to developments in the electrical, electrochemical, biomedical, and environmental fields. Recently, a coaxial electrospinning process has been used to fabricate new nanostructures with advanced performance, but intricate and delicate process conditions hinder reproducibility and mass production. Herein, recent progress in new emerging parameters for successful coaxial electrospinning, and the various nanostructures and critical application areas resulting from these activities. Relationships between the new parameters and final product characteristics are described, new possibilities for nanostructures achievable via coaxial electrospinning are identified, and new research directions with a view to future applications are suggested.

Sulfonylcalix[4]arene functionalized nanofiber membranes for effective removal and selective fluorescence recognition of terbium(iii) ions

A novel sulfonylcalix[4]arene functionalized aminated polyacrylonitrile (APAN) nanofiber membrane was fabricated, exhibiting good Tb³⁺ adsorption capacity and photoluminescence performance.

Fabrication and characterization of metal stent coating with drug-loaded nanofiber film for gallstone dissolution

Stent insertion and chemical agents of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and sodium cholate for dissolving common bile duct stone diseases through extra biliary tract infusion have been believed a relatively effective therapeutics for the clinical symptom. Core-shell nanofibers produced by co-axial electrospinning to deliver chemical drugs, biomacromolecules, genes and even cells have been reported for various advanced drug delivery system and tissue engineering applications. In the present study, poly (lactide-co-ɛ-caprolactone) (PLCL) core-shell nanofiber-coated film of stent, loaded with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and sodium cholate in core layer, was fabricated by co-axial electrospinning for treating gallstone disease. Image of laser scanning confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated core-shell structure of drug-loaded nanofiber. Fourier transform infrared spectra and the thermogravimetric analysis proved ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and sodium cholate to be successfully loaded in nanofibers. Morphology of nanofibers after a period of degradation still keeps good shape. Drugs can continuously release for around five days, which was proved significant effectiveness for dissolving gallstone. Besides, unobvious cytotoxicity was exhibited from MTT results and cell kept good morphology in vitro research. The present coated stent showed a bright prospect for dissolving the biliary stone.

Fabrication of Nitrogen-Doped Hollow Mesoporous Spherical Carbon Capsules for Supercapacitors

A novel "dissolution-capture" method for the fabrication of nitrogen-doped hollow mesoporous spherical carbon capsules (N-HMSCCs) with high capability for supercapacitor is developed. The fabrication process is performed by depositing mesoporous silica on the surface of the polyacrylonitrile nanospheres, followed by a dissolution-capture process occurring in the polyacrylonitrile core and silica shell. The polyacrylonitrile core is dissolved by dimethylformamide treatment to form a hollow cavity. Then, the polyacrylonitrile is captured into the mesochannel of silica. After carbonization and etching of silica, N-HMSCCs with uniform mesopore size are produced. The N-HMSCCs show a high specific capacitance of 206.0 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) in 6.0 M KOH due to its unique hollow nanostructure, high surface area, and nitrogen content. In addition, 92.3% of the capacitance of N-HMSCCs still remains after 3000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). The "dissolution-capture" method should give a useful enlightenment for the design of electrode materials for supercapacitor.

Adsorptive amputation of hazardous azo dye Congo red from wastewater: a critical review

Increasing amount of dyes in an ecosystem has propelled the search of various methods for dye removal. Amongst all the methods, adsorption occupies a prominent place in dye removal. Keeping this in mind, many adsorbents used for the removal of hazardous anionic azo dye Congo red (CR) from aqueous medium were reviewed by the authors. The main objectives behind this review article are to assemble the information on scattered adsorbents and enlighten the wide range of potentially effective adsorbents for CR removal. Thus, CR sorption by various adsorbents such as activated carbon, non-conventional low-cost materials, nanomaterials, composites and nanocomposites are surveyed and critically reviewed as well as their sorption capacities are also compared. This review also explores the grey areas of the adsorption performance of various adsorbents with reference to the effects of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration and adsorbent dosage. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic data of different adsorbents used for CR removal were also analysed. It is evident from a literature survey of more than 290 published papers that nanoparticle and nanocomposite adsorbents have demonstrated outstanding adsorption capabilities for CR. Synthesis of Fe3O4/Polyacrylonitrile Composite Electrospun Nanofiber Mat for Effective Adsorption of Tetracycline

Novel Fe3O4/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite nanofibers (NFs) were prepared by a simple two-step process, an electrospinning and solvothermal method. Characterization by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated formation of a uniform nanoparticles coating (about 20 nm in thickness) on the PAN nanofiber backbone. The coating was constructed by well-crystallized cubic phase Fe3O4 nanoparticles as examined by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The coating doubled the specific surface area of NFs, from 8.4 to 17.8 m2 g(-1), as confirmed by nitrogen sorption isotherm analysis. To evaluate the feasibility of Fe3O4/PAN composite NFs as a potential adsorbent for antibiotic removal, batch adsorption experiments were conducted using tetracycline (TC) as the model antibiotic molecule. The results showed that Fe3O4/PAN composite NFs were effective in removing TC with no impactful loss of Fe in the pH regime of environmental interest (5-8). The adsorption of TC onto Fe3O4/PAN composite NFs better fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 257.07 mg g(-1) at pH 6. The composite NFs also exhibited good regenerability over repeated adsorption/desorption cycles. Surface complexation between TC and the composite NFs contributed most to the adsorption as elucidated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This highly effective and novel adsorbent can be easily modularized and separated, promising its huge potential in drinking and wastewater treatment for antibiotic removal.

One-dimensional CdS/TiO2 nanofiber composites as efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts for selective organic transformation: synthesis, characterization, and performance

CdS/TiO2 heterojunction nanofibers have been successfully synthesized through the photodeposition of CdS on 1D TiO2 nanofibers that were prepared via a facile electrospinning method. The as-synthesized samples showed high photocatalytic activities upon selectively oxidizing a series of alcohols into corresponding aldehydes under visible light irradiation. TEM observations revealed that CdS was closely grown on the TiO2 nanofibers. Moreover, it was found that the CdS/TiO2 nanofibers that were photodeposited for 4 h exhibited the highest catalytic activity, with a conversion of 22% and a selectivity of 99%, which were much higher than those of commercial CdS. In addition, we also discuss the photoabsorption performance and the reaction mechanism of the photocatalytic oxidation of alcohols.
