Trimeric plasmonic molecules: the role of symmetry

Distinct plasma phosphorylated-tau proteins profiling for the differential diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease by plasmonic asymmetric nanobridge-based biosensor

The differential diagnosis between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been highly demanded for its effectiveness in preventing and contributing to early diagnosis of AD. To this end, we developed a single plasmonic asymmetric nanobridge (PAN)-based biosensor to differentially diagnose MCI and AD by quantitative profiling of phosphorylated tau proteins (p-tau) in clinical plasma samples, which revealed a significant correlation with AD development and progression. The PAN was designed to have a conductive junction and asymmetric structure, which was unable to be synthesized by the traditional thermodynamical methods. For its unique morphological characteristics, PAN features high electromagnetic field enhancement, enabling the biosensor to achieve high sensitivity, with a limit of detection in the attomolar regime for quantitative analysis of p-tau. By introducing support vector machine (SVM)-based machine learning algorithm, the improved diagnostic system was achieved for prediction of healthy controls, MCI, and AD groups with an accuracy of 94.47 % by detecting various p-tau species levels in human plasma. Thus, our proposed PAN-based plasmonic biosensor has a powerful potential in clinical utility for predicting the onset of AD progression in the asymptomatic phase.

2D Plasmonic Molecules via Hydrogen Bond Interaction between Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticles

The use of macromolecular design features to regulate non-covalent bonding on the nanoscale is a young and emerging fabrication strategy for advanced nanostructures. For the first time, we describe a self-assembly method to create a series of 2D plasmonic molecules (PMs) using hydrogen-bond interaction between a pair of polymer-capped gold nanoparticles (hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor). Due to the nature of hydrogen-bond interaction, we found that polymer interaction and solvation compete with each other during the self-assembly process, which turns out to be the most important condition for controlling the coordination number of PMs. We have conducted an extensive study on the solvent effect, which has helped us to design and fabricate a series of precise PMs with high symmetry.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Photonic Noble-Metal Nanomaterials

Colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are composed of metal cores and organic or inorganic ligand shells. These NPs support size- and shape-dependent plasmonic resonances. They can be assembled from dispersions into artificial metamolecules which have collective plasmonic resonances originating from coupled bright and dark optical electric and magnetic modes that form depending on the size and shape of the constituent NPs and their number, arrangement, and interparticle distance. NPs can also be assembled into extended 2D and 3D metamaterials that are glassy thin films or ordered thin films or crystals, also known as superlattices and supercrystals. The metamaterials have tunable optical properties that depend on the size, shape, and composition of the NPs, and on the number of NP layers and their interparticle distance. Interestingly, strong light-matter interactions in superlattices form plasmon polaritons. Tunable interparticle distances allow designer materials with dielectric functions tailorable from that characteristic of an insulator to that of a metal, and serve as strong optical absorbers or scatterers, respectively. In combination with lithography techniques, these extended assemblies can be patterned to create subwavelength NP superstructures and form large-area 2D and 3D metamaterials that manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of transmitted or reflected light.

Precise profiling of exosomal biomarkers via programmable curved plasmonic nanoarchitecture-based biosensor for clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease of complex pathogenesis, with overt symptoms following disease progression. Early AD diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of robust biomarkers and limited patient access to diagnostics via neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests. Exosomes present in body fluids are attracting attention as diagnostic biomarkers that directly reflect neuropathological features within the brain. In particular, exosomal miRNAs (exomiRs) signatures are involved in AD pathogenesis, showing a different expression between patients and the healthy controls (HCs). However, low yield and high homologous nature impede the accuracy and reproducibility of exosome blood-based AD diagnostics. Here, we developed a programmable curved plasmonic nanoarchitecture-based biosensor to analyze exomiRs in clinical serum samples for accurate AD diagnosis. To allow the detection of exomiRs in serum at attomolar levels, nanospaces (e.g., nanocrevice and nanocavity) were introduced into the nanostructures to dramatically increase the spectral sensitivity by adjusting the bending angle of the plasmonic nanostructure through sodium chloride concentration control. The developed biosensor classifies individuals into AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and HCs through profiling and quantifying exomiRs. Furthermore, integrating analysis expression patterns of multiple exosomal biomarkers improved serum-based diagnostic performance (average accuracy of 98.22%). Therefore, precise, highly sensitive serum-derived exosomal biomarker detection-based plasmonic biosensor has a robust capacity to predict the molecular pathologic of neurodegenerative disease, progression of cognitive decline, MCI/AD conversion, as well as early diagnosis and treatment.

Core-satellite-satellite hierarchical nanostructures: assembly, plasmon coupling, and gap-selective surface-enhanced Raman scattering

The plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), such as color tunability, electric field generation, hot carrier generation, and localized heating, are significantly enhanced in the nanogaps between AuNPs. Therefore, the creation and control of nanogaps are key to developing advanced plasmonic nanomaterials. Most AuNP nanoassemblies, including dimers, trimers, and core-satellites, have a single type of nanogap within the assembly. In this study, we construct core-satellite-satellite (CSS) hierarchical, fractal-like nanostructures featuring two types of nanogaps, namely first generation nanogaps (Gap1) between the core and first satellite (Sat1) AuNPs and second generation nanogaps (Gap2) between Sat1 and second satellite (Sat2) AuNPs. The sequential and alternating immersion of glass slides in different-sized AuNPs and linkers forms CSS with perfect yield. The UV-vis spectroscopy, combined with charge density distribution calculations, reveals the nature of the plasmon coupling between the AuNPs that constitute CSS nanoassemblies. The plasmon coupling can be tuned by independently varying Gap1 and Gap2. Furthermore, we explore the electric field amplification in Gap1 and Gap2 by comparing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal intensity selectively from each nanogap. This new type of nanostructure provides a great flexibility to control and enhance the plasmonic properties of noble metal nanoparticles.

Gold nanoparticle ring arrays from core-satellite nanostructures made to order by hydrogen bond interactions

Polyethylene glycol-grafted gold nanoparticles are attached to silica nanoparticle cores via hydrogen bonding in a controlled fashion, forming well-defined core-satellite structures in colloidal solution. For separating these complex structures effectively from the parental nanoparticles, a straightforward and easy protocol using glass beads has been developed. The attached gold nanoparticles show unique surface mobility on the silica core surface, which allows for nanoparticle rearrangement into a 2D ring pattern surrounding the silica nanoparticle template when the core-satellite structures are cast to a planar surface. When etching away the silica core under conditions in which the polymer shell fixes the satellites to the substrate, highly ordered ring-shaped patterns of gold nanoparticles are formed. By variation of the size of the parental particles - 13 to 28 nm for gold nanoparticles and 39 to 62 nm for silica nanoparticles - a great library of different ring-structures regarding size and particle number is accessible with relative ease. The proposed protocol is low-cost and can easily be scaled up. It moreover demonstrates the power of hydrogen bonds in polymers as a dynamic anchoring tool for creating nanoclusters with rearrangement ability. We believe that this concept constitutes a powerful strategy for the development of new and innovative nanostructures.

Self-assembly of colloidal inorganic nanocrystals: nanoscale forces, emergent properties and applications

The self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles has made it possible to bridge the nanoscopic and macroscopic worlds and to make complex nanostructures. The nanoparticle-mediated assembly enables many potential applications, from biodetection and nanomedicine to optoelectronic devices. Properties of assembled materials are determined not only by the nature of nanoparticle building blocks, but also by spatial positions of nanoparticles within the assemblies. A deep understanding of nanoscale interactions between nanoparticles is a prerequisite to controlling nanoparticle arrangement during assembly. In this review, we present an overview of interparticle interactions governing their assembly in a liquid phase. Considerable attention is devoted to examples that illustrate nanoparticle assembly into ordered superstructures using different types of building blocks, including plasmonic nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, lanthanide-doped nanophosphors, and quantum dots. We also cover the physicochemical properties of nanoparticle ensembles, especially those arising from particle coupling effects. We further discuss future research directions and challenges in controlling self-assembly at a level of precision that is most crucial to technology development.

Photostability enhancement of InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots by plasmonic nanostructures

The effect of gold and silver plasmonic films on the photoluminescence and photostability of InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS nanocrystals (quantum dots) is reported. Colloidal gold films promote the photostability enhancement of InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (more durable emission properties in the presence of metal nanostructures) through reducing exciton lifetime. In contrast, silver decreases the photostability of InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots without changing the photoluminescence intensity and kinetics. By adjusting the excitation wavelength closer to the extinction band of gold nanoparticles a 1.8-fold enhancement of luminescence intensity has been obtained using a polyelectrolyte spacer between the metal and InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS nanoparticles. Thus, plasmonics offers essential practical improvement of light emitters in terms of their durable luminescent properties upon prolonged optical excitation without losses in luminescence efficiency or even along with increased efficiency.

Strongly coupled evenly divided disks: a new compact and tunable platform for plasmonic Fano resonances

Plasmonic artificial molecules are promising platforms for linear and nonlinear optical modulation at various regimes including the visible, infrared and terahertz bands. Fano resonances in plasmonic artificial structures are widely used for controlling spectral lineshapes and tailoring of near-field and far-field optical response. Generation of a strong Fano resonance usually relies on strong plasmon coupling in densely packed plasmonic structures. Challenges in reproducible fabrication using conventional lithography significantly hinders the exploration of novel plasmonic nanostructures for strong Fano resonance. In this work, we propose a new class of plasmonic molecules with symmetric structure for Fano resonances, named evenly divided disk, which shows a strong Fano resonance due to the interference between a subradiant anti-bonding mode and a superradiant bonding mode. We successfully fabricated evenly divided disk structures with high reproducibility and with sub-20 nm gaps, using our recently developed sketch and peel lithography technique. The experimental spectra agree well with the calculated response, indicating the robustness of the Fano resonance for the evenly divided disk geometry. Control experiments reveal that the strength of the Fano resonance gradually increases when increasing the number of split parts on the disk from three to eight individual segments. The Fano-resonant plasmonic molecules that can also be reliably defined by our unique fabrication approach open up new avenues for application and provide insight into the design of artificial molecules for controlling light-matter interactions.

Electromagnetic resonance analysis of asymmetric carbon nanotube dimers for sensing applications

In this work, we study the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of asymmetric carbon nanotube (CNT) dimers with rigorous computational experiments. We show that the configurational asymmetry in the CNT dimer assembly creates a unique field distribution in the vicinity of the dimer, which in turn generates two distinct resonances representing the bonding and anti-bonding modes. The sensitivity of these two modes towards CNT lengths, orientations, and shapes, is studied. We also show the ability of asymmetric CNT dimer for the contactless detection of nanoparticles (NP). The presence of a NP in the vicinity of the CNT dimer perturbs the dimer's field distribution and causes unequal shifts in the bonding and anti-bonding resonances depending on the NP location, material, size and shape. By studying the differences in these resonance shifts, we show that the relative location and orientation of the NP can be reconstructed. The computational experiments performed in this work have the potential to guide the use of asymmetric CNT dimers for novel sensing applications.

Dual-toroidal dipole excitation on permittivity-asymmetric dielectric metasurfaces

Magnetic and electric toroidal dipoles possess interesting properties differing from traditional electric and magnetic dipoles. In order to generate both the magnetic and electric toroidal dipoles simultaneously in one single structure, a permittivity-asymmetric dielectric metasurface is proposed, which is composed of clusters of four high-index dielectric nano-disks with asymmetric permittivity distribution. These two types of toroidal dipole responses can be separately observed at different spectral positions. This study reveals that symmetry-breaking in a broad sense is crucial for exciting toroidal responses, and the proposed metasurface points to a unique routine of exciting and enhancing the toroidal responses, which may be used to realize efficient light-matter interaction in the area of meta-optics.

Double Fano resonances in hybrid disk/rod artificial plasmonic molecules based on dipole-quadrupole coupling

Fano resonance can be achieved by the destructive interference between a superradiant bright mode and a subradiant dark mode. A variety of artificial plasmonic oligomers have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance for its extensive applications. However, the Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomer systems comes from the interaction of all metal particles, which greatly limits the tunability of the Fano resonance. Besides, only a single Fano resonance is supported by many existing plasmonic oligomers, while multiple Fano resonances mostly occur in complex and multilayer structures, whose fabrication is greatly challenging. Here, a simple asymmetric plasmonic molecule consisting of a central metal disk and two side-coupled parallel metal rods is demonstrated. The simulation and experimental results clearly show that double Fano resonances appear in the transmission spectrum. In addition, the two Fano peaks can be independently tuned and single/double Fano peak switching can be achieved by changing one rod length or the gap distances between the rods and the disk. The modulation method is simple and effective, which greatly increases the tunability of the structure. The proposed asymmetric artificial plasmonic molecule can have applications in multi-channel optical switches, filters and biosensors. Moreover, the controllable plasmonic field intensity in the gap between the disk and rods also provides a new control means for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions and biosynthesis.

Local Optical Chirality Induced by Near-Field Mode Interference in Achiral Plasmonic Metamolecules

When circularly polarized light interacts with a nanostructure, the optical response depends on the geometry of the structure. If the nanostructure is chiral (i.e., it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image), then its optical response, both in near-field and far-field, depends on the handedness of the incident light. In contrast, achiral structures exhibit identical far-field responses for left- and right-circular polarization. Here, we show that a perfectly achiral nanostructure, a plasmonic metamolecule with trigonal D_3h symmetry, exhibits a near-field response that is sensitive to the handedness of light. This effect stems from the near-field interference between the different plasmonic modes sustained by the plasmonic metamolecule under circularly polarized light excitation. The local chirality in a plasmonic trimer is then experimentally evidenced with nanoscale resolution using a molecular probe. Our experiments demonstrate that the optical near-field chirality can be imprinted into the photosensitive polymer, turning an optical chirality into a geometrical chirality that can be imaged using atomic force microscopy. These results are of interest for the field of polarization-sensitive photochemistry.

Manipulating the confinement of electromagnetic field in size-specific gold nanoparticles dimers and trimers

The intriguing light-matter interactions can be governed by controlling the particle size and shape, electromagnetic interactions and dielectric properties and local environment of the metal nanostructures. Amongst the different approaches that have been engendered to manipulate light at the nanoscale, the self-assembly of metallic nanostructures with controllable interparticle distances and angular orientations, which strongly impact their optical attributes, is one of the viable avenues to exploit their utility in a diverse range of niche applications. The simplest geometrical architectures that enable such modulations are dimers with changeable interparticle distances and trimers with an additional degree of angular orientation to correlate the plasmonic observables with the observed spectral characteristics. Wet chemical approaches have been adopted in this study for the synthesis of size-selective gold nanoparticles, and appropriate organic linkers have judiciously been employed to induce plasmonic interactions amongst the gold nanoparticles in close proximity to each other. The combination of experimental observations and electromagnetic simulations adopted to probe the plasmonic interactions revealed that the electrodynamic coupling effect was very sensitive to particle size, interparticle distances and angular orientations in these simple nanoassemblies. The capability to precisely manipulate the electric field at the junctions between these plasmon-coupled nanoparticles could pave the way for the application of these nanoassemblies in surface-enhanced spectroscopies and sensing applications.

Influence of the CTAB surfactant layer on optical properties of single metallic nanospheres

We evaluate experimentally and theoretically the role of the residual ligands and ambient environment refractive index in the optical response of a single spherical gold nanoparticle on a substrate and demonstrate the changes in the near- and far-field properties of its hybridized modes in the presence of the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) layer. Particularly, we show that the conventional bilayer scheme for CTAB is not relevant for colloidal nanoparticles deposited on a substrate. We show that this CTAB layer considerably changes the amplitude and localization of the confinement of the electric field, which is of prime importance in the design of plasmonic complex systems coupled to emitters. Moreover, we numerically study the influence of the CTAB layer on the modification of sensitivity of plasmonic resonances of a gold nanopshere to local refractive index changes.

Arrays of Plasmonic Nanoparticle Dimers with Defined Nanogap Spacers

Plasmonic molecules are building blocks of metallic nanostructures that give rise to intriguing optical phenomena with similarities to those seen in molecular systems. The ability to design plasmonic hybrid structures and molecules with nanometric resolution would enable applications in optical metamaterials and sensing that presently cannot be demonstrated, because of a lack of suitable fabrication methods allowing the structural control of the plasmonic atoms on a large scale. Here we demonstrate a wafer-scale "lithography-free" parallel fabrication scheme to realize nanogap plasmonic meta-molecules with precise control over their size, shape, material, and orientation. We demonstrate how we can tune the corresponding coupled resonances through the entire visible spectrum. Our fabrication method, based on glancing angle physical vapor deposition with gradient shadowing, permits critical parameters to be varied across the wafer and thus is ideally suited to screen potential structures. We obtain billions of aligned dimer structures with controlled variation of the spectral properties across the wafer. We spectroscopically map the plasmonic resonances of gold dimer structures and show that they not only are in good agreement with numerically modeled spectra, but also remain functional, at least for a year, in ambient conditions.

Enhanced second-harmonic generation assisted by breathing mode in a multi-resonant plasmonic trimer

Boosting the nonlinear conversion rate in nanoscale is pivotal for practical applications such as highly sensitive biosensors, extreme ultra-violate light sources, and frequency combs. Here, we theoretically study the enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a plasmonic trimer assisted by breathing modes. The geometry of the trimer is fine-tuned to produce strong plasmonic resonances at both the fundamental and SH wavelengths to boost SHG intensity. Moreover, it is found that breathing modes show remarkable ability to augment SHG by increasing the enhancement area. In particular, these breathing modes ensure a substantial spatial mode overlap at the fundamental and SH wavelengths, resulting in further promotion of the SHG conversation rate. We envision that our findings could enable applications in nanoscale frequency converters with high efficiency.

Hybridization of singular plasmons via transformation optics

Surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanostructures offer great opportunities to guide and manipulate light on the nanoscale. In the design of novel plasmonic devices, a central topic is to clarify the intricate relationship between the resonance spectrum and the geometry of the nanostructure. Despite many advances, the design becomes quite challenging when the desired spectrum is highly complex. Here we develop a theoretical model for surface plasmons of interacting nanoparticles to reduce the complexity of the design process significantly. Our model is developed by combining plasmon hybridization theory with transformation optics, which yields an efficient way of simultaneously controlling both global and local features of the resonance spectrum. As an application, we propose a design of metasurface whose absorption spectrum can be controlled over a large class of complex patterns through only a few geometric parameters in an intuitive way. Our approach provides fundamental tools for the effective design of plasmonic metamaterials with on-demand functionality.

Dual-band directional scattering with all-dielectric trimer in the near-infrared region

A silicon trimer is explored to tailor unidirectional forward scattering at multiple wavelengths in the near-infrared region with low loss using theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, which leads to the dramatic enhancement in unidirectional forward scattering and suppression of backward scattering. The higher moments in the trimer can be properly excited and balanced by breaking the symmetry of the trimer. The generalized Kerker conditions at two different wavelengths can be achieved in the trimer to further improve the scattering directivity. Our results provide insights into future development of all-dielectric low-loss nanoantennas in the near-infrared region.

AFM-Nano Manipulation of Plasmonic Molecules Used as "Nano-Lens" to Enhance Raman of Individual Nano-Objects

This paper explores the enhancement of Raman signals using individual nano-plasmonic structures and demonstrates the possibility to obtain controlled gold plasmonic nanostructures by atomic force microscopy (AFM) manipulation under a confocal Raman device. By manipulating the gold nanoparticles (Nps) while monitoring them using a confocal microscope, it is possible to generate individual nano- structures, plasmonic molecules not accessible currently by lithography at these nanometer scales. This flexible approach allows us to tune plasmonic resonance of the nanostructures, to generate localized hot spots and to circumvent the effects of strong electric near field gradients intrinsic to Tip Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) or Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) experiments. The inter Np distances and symmetry of the plasmonic molecules in interaction with other individual nano-objects control the resonance conditions of the assemblies and the enhancement of their Raman responses. This paper shows also how some plasmonic structures generate localized nanometric areas with high electric field magnitude without strong gradient. These last plasmonic molecules may be used as "nano-lenses" tunable in wavelength and able to enhance Raman signals of neighbored nano-object. The positioning of one individual probed nano-object in the spatial area defined by the nano-lens becomes then very non-restrictive, contrary to TERS experiments where the spacing distance between tip and sample is crucial. The experimental flexibility obtained in these approaches is illustrated here by the enhanced Raman scatterings of carbon nanotube.

Symmetry-breaking induced magnetic Fano resonances in densely packed arrays of symmetric nanotrimers

Due to unique properties and great design flexibilities, Fano resonances represent one of the most promising optical features mediated by metallic nanostructures, while the excitation of some Fano modes is impossible due to symmetry reasons. The aim of this work is to show that dense lattice arrangements can have a profound impact on the optical properties of nanostructures and, in particular, can enable the excitation of otherwise dark modes. Here, we demonstrate this concept using the example of rectangular arrays of symmetric trimers packed so densely that the coupling between neighbouring unit cells imposes a symmetry break, enabling the excitation of magnetic Fano resonances. We found that in experiments as well as in simulations, electric and magnetic Fano resonances can be simultaneously formed in cases where the inter-trimer distances are sufficiently small. By analysing the transition from an isolated trimer mode into a regime of strong near-field coupling, we show that by modifying the rectangular unit cell lengths due to the symmetry mismatch between lattice and trimer, two types of Fano resonances can be found, especially magnetic Fano resonances with loop-type magnetic field distributions within the centre of each trimer, which can be either enhanced or suppressed. In addition, the influence of the refractive index environment was measured, showing sensitivity values of approximately 300 nm/RIU. Our work provides fundamental insights into the interaction of the lattice and nanostructure response and paves the way towards the observation of novel optical excitations.

Plasmonic Optical and Chiroptical Response of Self-Assembled Au Nanorod Equilateral Trimers

Assembling metamolecules from anisotropic, shape-engineered nanocrystals provides the opportunity to orchestrate distinct optical responses one nanocrystal at a time. The Au nanorod has long been a structural archetype in plasmonics, but nanorod assemblies have largely been limited to end-to-end or side-to-side arrangements, accessing only a subset of potential metamolecule structures. Here, we employ triangular templates to direct the assembly of Au nanorods along the edges of an equilateral triangle. Using spatially resolved, dark-field scattering spectroscopy in concert with numerical simulation of individual metamolecules, we map the evolution in surface plasmon resonances as we add one, two, and three nanorods to construct triangular nanorod assemblies. The assemblies exhibit rotation- and polarization-dependent hybridized plasmon modes, which are sensitive to variations in nanorod size, position, and orientation that lead to geometrical symmetry breaking. The triangular arrangement of nanorods supports magnetic plasmon modes where electric fields are directed along the perimeter of the triangle, and the magnetic field intensity within the triangle's open interior is enhanced. Circumferential displacements of the nanorods within the templates impart either a left- or right-handed sense of rotation to the structure, which generates a chiroptical response under unidirectional oblique illumination. Our results represent an important step in realizing and characterizing metamaterial assemblies with "open" structures utilizing anisotropic plasmonic building blocks, with implications for optical magnetic field enhancement and chiral plasmonics.

Radial breathing modes coupling in plasmonic molecules

Metallic hexamer, very much the plasmonic analog of benzene molecule, provides an ideal platform to mimic modes coupling and hybridization in molecular systems. To demonstrate this, we present a detailed study on radial breathing mode (RBM) coupling in a plasmonic dual-hexamers. We excite RBMs of hexamers by symmetrically matching the polarization state of the illumination with the distribution of electric dipole moments of the dual-hexamer. It is found that the RBM coupling exhibits a nonexponential decay when the inter-hexamer separation is increased, owing to the dark mode nature of RBM. When the outer hexamer is subjected to the in-plane twisting, resonant wavelengths of two coupled RBMs as well as the coupling constant show cosine variations with the twist angle, indicating the symmetry of hexamer structure plays a critical role in the coupling of RBMs. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the coupling of RBMs is dominated by the in-plane interaction as the outer hexamer is under an out-of-plane tilting, causing convergence of resonant wavelengths of the two coupled RBMs with increasing tilt angle. Our results not only provide an insight into the plasmonic RBM coupling mechanism, but also pave the way to systematically control the spectral response of plasmonic molecules.

Extraordinary optical fields in nanostructures: from sub-diffraction-limited optics to sensing and energy conversion

Along with the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication technology, the past few decades have seen the flourishing emergence of subwavelength-structured materials and interfaces for optical field engineering at the nanoscale. Three remarkable properties associated with these subwavelength-structured materials are the squeezed optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, gradient optical fields in the subwavelength scale, and enhanced optical fields that are orders of magnitude greater than the incident field. These engineered optical fields have inspired fundamental and practical advances in both engineering optics and modern chemistry. The first property is the basis of sub-diffraction-limited imaging, lithography, and dense data storage. The second property has led to the emergence of a couple of thin and planar functional optical devices with a reduced footprint. The third one causes enhanced radiation (e.g., fluorescence), scattering (e.g., Raman scattering), and absorption (e.g., infrared absorption and circular dichroism), offering a unique platform for single-molecule-level biochemical sensing, and high-efficiency chemical reaction and energy conversion. In this review, we summarize recent advances in subwavelength-structured materials that bear extraordinary squeezed, gradient, and enhanced optical fields, with a particular emphasis on their optical and chemical applications. Finally, challenges and outlooks in this promising field are discussed.

Tailoring the Core-Satellite Nanoassembly Architectures by Tuning Internanoparticle Electrostatic Interactions

The use of plasmonic nanoplatforms has received increasing interest in a wide variety of fields ranging from theranostics to environmental sensing to plant biology. In particular, the development of plasmonic nanoparticles into ordered nanoclusters has been of special interest due to the new chemical functionalities and optical responses that they can introduce. However, achieving predetermined nanocluster architectures from bottom-up approaches in the colloidal solution state still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a one-pot assembly approach that provides flexibility in precise control of core-satellite nanocluster architectures in the colloidal solution state. We found that the pH of the assembly medium plays a vital role in the hierarchy of the nanoclusters. The architecture along with the size of the satellite gold nanoparticles determines the optical responses of nanoclusters. Using electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy, we introduce a set of design rules for the synthesis of distinct architectures of silica-core gold satellites nanoclusters in the colloidal solution state. Our findings provide insight into advancing the colloidal solution state nanoclusters formation with predictable architectures and optical properties.

Multiple invisibility regions induced by symmetry breaking in a trimer of subwavelength graphene-coated nanowires

Electromagnetic response is studied for clusters of subwavelength graphene-coated nanowires illuminated by a linearly polarized plane wave in the terahertz frequency range. The solution of the scattering problem is obtained with the Lorenz-Mie theory and multiple cylinder scattering formalism. The results show that normalized scattering cross-sections of nanowire clusters can be drastically changed by the symmetry breaking introduced into the cluster's design. This effect is due to excitation of dark modes and is observed only for the incident wave of TE polarization.

Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy with Local Plasmonic Fields of a Trimer Gap-Antenna Array

Half-wavelength plasmonic antennas tuned to resonance with molecular vibrational excitations have been demonstrated to enhance 2DIR signals by multiple orders of magnitude. We design doubly degenerate in-plane plasmonic normal modes of the symmetric trimer gap-antenna, which have orthogonal dipole moments excited by light of the appropriate polarization, to localize the enhanced field into the antenna's gap. Vibrational excitations serve as sensitive probes of the plasmonic fields. 2DIR spectroscopy of thin molecular films indicates that molecules emitting enhanced signals experience an electric field with a direction independent of the excitation laser pulse polarization. Our results illustrate the trade-off between the large signal amplification in molecules close to the antenna surface by resonant plasmons, where the direction of the enhanced fields follows metal surface boundary conditions, and the associated limitations for the polarization-selective spectroscopy. The ultrafast quantum dynamics reported by the enhanced signals is not affected by its interaction with plasmonic excitation.

Plasmonic refractive index sensing using strongly coupled metal nanoantennas: nonlocal limitations

Localized surface plasmon resonance based on coupled metallic nanoparticles has been extensively studied in the refractive index sensing and the detection of molecules. The amount of resonance peak-shift depends on the refractive index of surrounding medium and the geometry/symmetry of plasmonic oligomers. It has recently been found that as the feature size or the gap distance of plasmonic nanostructures approaches several nanometers, quantum effects can change the plasmon coupling in nanoparticles. However, most of the research on plasmonic sensing has been done based on classical local calculations even for the interparticle gap below ~3 nm, in which the nonlocal screening plays an important role. Here, we theoretically investigate the nonlocal effect on the evolution of various plasmon resonance modes in strongly coupled nanoparticle dimer and trimer antennas with the gap down to 1 nm. Then, the refractive index sensing in these nonlocal systems is evaluated and compared with the results in classical calculations. We find that in the nonlocal regime, both refractive index sensibility factor and figure of merit are actually smaller than their classical counterparts mainly due to the saturation of plasmon shifts. These results would be beneficial for the understanding of interaction between light and nonlocal plasmonic nanostructures and the development of plasmonic devices such as nanosensors and nanoantennas.

Dynamic tailoring of electromagnetic behaviors of graphene plasmonic oligomers by local chemical potential

In the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regime, graphene supports tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by controlling the chemical potential, which promotes light-matter interaction at the selected wavelength, showing exceptional promise for optoelectronic applications. In this article, we show that the electromagnetic (EM) response of graphene oligomers can be substantially modified by the modification of the local chemical potential, strengthening or reducing the intrinsic plasmonic modes. The effect mechanism is corroborated by a graphene nanocluster composed of 13 nanodisks with D6h symmetry; by transforming to D3h symmetry, the effect mechanism was retained and more available plasmonic resonance modes appeared. The intriguing properties open a new way to design nanodevices made of graphene oligomers with highly efficient photoresponse enhancement and tunable spectral selectivity for highly accurate photodetection.

Collective Effects in Second-Harmonic Generation from Plasmonic Oligomers

We investigate collective effects in plasmonic oligomers of different symmetries using second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy with cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). The oligomers consist of gold nanorods that have a longitudinal plasmon resonance close to the fundamental wavelength that is used for SHG excitation and whose long axes are arranged locally such that they follow the distribution of the transverse component of the electric field of radially or azimuthally polarized CVBs in the focal plane. We observe that SHG from such rotationally symmetric oligomers is strongly modified by the interplay between the polarization properties of the CVB and interparticle coupling. We find that the oligomers with radially oriented nanorods exhibit small coupling effects. In contrast, we find that the oligomers with azimuthally oriented nanorods exhibit large coupling effects that lead to silencing of SHG from the whole structure. Our experimental results are in very good agreement with numerical calculations based on the boundary element method. The work describes a new route for studying coupling effects in complex arrangements of nano-objects and thereby for tailoring the efficiency of nonlinear optical effects in such structures.

Electromagnetic field coupling characteristics in graphene plasmonic oligomers: from isolated to collective modes

In this paper, we propose a plasmonic tetramer composed of coupled graphene nanodisks. The transformation from the isolated to the collective modes of the proposed structure is investigated by analysing the whispering-gallery modes and extinction spectra with various inter-nanodisk gap distances. In addition, the effect of introducing a central nanodisk into the tetramer on the extinction spectra is explored, which leads to Fano resonance. Furthermore, the refractive index sensing properties of the proposed graphene plasmonic oligomer have been demonstrated. The proposed nanostructures might pave the road toward the application of graphene plasmonic oligomers in fields such as nanophotonics, and chemical or biochemical sensing.

Optical Properties of Gold Nanoparticle Assemblies on a Glass Surface

The assemblies of cross-linked gold nanoparticles (AuNP) attract lot of scientific attention due to feasible perspectives of their use for development of scaled contact electrodes. Here, we developed and tested method of solid-state formation of dimers created from small AuNP (~18 nm) cross-linked with 1.9-nonadithiol (NDT) molecules. The morphology of created coating of a glass surface and its optical-polarization properties have been studied in detail by combination of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and modulation-polarization spectroscopy.The modification of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of single AuNP and their assemblies were studied by measuring of the spectral characteristics of polarization difference at all stages of synthesis. The radiative and nonradiative modes of LSPR have been analyzed in detail at different angles of incidence light. This allowed establishing relation between surface morphology of the coating and its optical properties.

A giant chiroptical effect caused by the electric quadrupole

Recently, there has been great interest in studying ultrasensitive detection and characterization of biomolecules using plasmonic particles, because they are of considerable importance in biomedical science and pharmaceutics. So far, all the theories on plasmon-induced circular dichroism (CD) have been based on the dipole approximation; the electric quadrupolar contribution is generally considered to be relatively small and neglected. Here we demonstrate that the electric quadrupolar contribution not only cannot be ignored, but it also plays a key role in many cases. Particularly, for the chiral medium that possesses preferential molecular orientations and is located at the hotspot of plasmonic nanostructures, the plasmonic CD strength contributed by molecular electric quadrupoles (EQs) can be two orders of magnitude higher than that contributed by molecular electric/magnetic dipoles. Unlike the case of the dipole approximation, molecular EQ associated plasmonic CD activity appears mainly at the plasmonic resonance absorptions that facilitate the optically enhanced near-field with steep electric field gradients, and is correlated with the boosted emission rate of a molecular EQ. Based on such physical understandings, we can design nanostructures to realize a giant chiroptical effect using the EQ contribution according to the requirements, which provide a new strategy for ultrasensitive detection and quantification of molecular chirality.

Plasmon Resonances in Self-Assembled Two-Dimensional Au Nanocrystal Metamolecules

We explore the evolution of plasmonic modes in two-dimensional nanocrystal oligomer "metamolecules" as the number of nanocrystals is systematically varied. Precise, hexagonally ordered Au nanocrystal oligomers with 1-31 members are assembled via capillary forces into polygonal topographic templates defined using electron-beam lithography. The visible and near-infrared scattering response of individual oligomers is measured by spatially resolved, polarized darkfield scattering spectroscopy. The response is highly sensitive to in-plane versus out-of-plane incident polarization, and we observe an exponentially saturating red shift in plasmon resonance wavelength as the number of nanocrystals per oligomer increases, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Simulations further elucidate the modes supported by the oligomers, including electric dipole and magnetic dipole resonances and their Fano interference. The single-oligomer sensitivity of our measurements also reveals the role of positional disorder in determining the wavelength and character of the plasmonic response. The progression of oligomer metamolecule structures studied here advances our understanding of fundamental plasmonic interactions in the transition regime between few-member plasmonic clusters and extended two-dimensional arrays.

Synergistic Effects of Plasmonics and Electron Trapping in Graphene Short-Wave Infrared Photodetectors with Ultrahigh Responsivity

Graphene's unique electronic and optical properties have made it an attractive material for developing ultrafast short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetectors. However, the performance of graphene SWIR photodetectors has been limited by the low optical absorption of graphene as well as the ultrashort lifetime of photoinduced carriers. Here, we present two mechanisms to overcome these two shortages and demonstrate a graphene-based SWIR photodetector with high responsivity and fast photoresponse. In particular, a vertical built-in field is employed in the graphene channel for trapping the photoinduced electrons and leaving holes in graphene, which results in prolonged photoinduced carrier lifetime. On the other hand, plasmonic effects were employed to realize photon trapping and enhance the light absorption of graphene. Thanks to the above two mechanisms, the responsivity of this proposed SWIR photodetector is up to a record of 83 A/W at a wavelength of 1.55 μm with a fast rising time of less than 600 ns. This device design concept addresses key challenges for high-performance graphene SWIR photodetectors and is promising for the development of mid/far-infrared optoelectronic applications.

Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy Investigation into Symmetry in Gold Trimer and Tetramer Plasmonic Nanoparticle Structures

We present a combined scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) investigation into the mode symmetries of plasmonic nanoparticle trimer and tetramer structures. We obtain nanometer-resolved energy loss spectra for both trimer and tetramer structures and compare these to boundary element method simulations. We show that EELS, in conjunction with eigenmode simulations, offers a complete characterization of the individual superstructures, and we trace the evolution of both optically dark and bright modes and identify multipolar mode contributions. We then apply this technique to tetramer structures that exhibit an expanded range of mode symmetries for two-dimensional and three-dimensional self-assembled geometries. These findings provide a comprehensive experimental account of the available photonic states in self-assembled nanoparticle clusters.

Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Multiplexed Raman Bio-Imaging of Surface Roughness-Controlled Nanobridged Nanogap Particles

Plasmonic nanostructures are widely studied and used because of their useful size, shape, composition and assembled structure-based plasmonic properties. It is, however, highly challenging to precisely design, reproducibly synthesize and reliably utilize plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced optical properties. Here, we devise a facile synthetic method to generate Au surface roughness-controlled nanobridged nanogap particles (Au-RNNPs) with ultrasmall (≈1 nm) interior gap and tunable surface roughness in a highly controllable manner. Importantly, we found that particle surface roughness can be associated with and enhance the electromagnetic field inside the interior gap, and stronger nanogap-enhanced Raman scattering (NERS) signals can be generated from particles by increasing particle surface roughness. The finite-element method-based calculation results support and are matched well with the experimental results and suggest one needs to consider particle shape, nanogap and nanobridges simultaneously to understand and control the optical properties of this type of nanostructures. Finally, the potential of multiplexed Raman detection and imaging with RNNPs and the high-speed, high-resolution Raman bio-imaging of Au-RNNPs inside cells with a wide-field Raman imaging setup with liquid crystal tunable filter are demonstrated. Our results provide strategies and principles in designing and synthesizing plasmonically enhanced nanostructures and show potential for detecting and imaging Raman nanoprobes in a highly specific, sensitive and multiplexed manner.

Near-field engineering of Fano resonances in a plasmonic assembly for maximizing CARS enhancements

Surface enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (SECARS) is a sensitive tool and promising for single molecular detection and chemical selective imaging. However, the enhancement factors (EF) were only 10~100 for colloidal silver and gold nanoparticles usually used as SECARS substrates. In this paper, we present a design of SECARS substrate consisting of three asymmetric gold disks and strategies for maximizing the EF by engineering near-field properties of the plasmonic Fano nanoassembly. It is found that the E-field “hot spots” corresponding to three different frequencies involved in SECARS process can be brought to the same spatial locations by tuning incident orientations, giving rise to highly confined SECARS “hot spots” with the EF reaching single-molecule sensitivity. Besides, an even higher EF of SECARS is achieved by introducing double Fano resonances in this plasmonic nanoassembly via further enlarging the sizes of the constituent disks. These findings put an important step forward to the plasmonic substrate design for SECARS as well as for other nonlinear optical processes.

Polarization-Independent Multiple Fano Resonances in Plasmonic Nonamers for Multimode-Matching Enhanced Multiband Second-Harmonic Generation

Plasmonic oligomers composed of metallic nanoparticles are one class of the most promising platforms for generating Fano resonances with unprecedented optical properties for enhancing various linear and nonlinear optical processes. For efficient generation of second-harmonic emissions at multiple wavelength bands, it is critical to design a plasmonic oligomer concurrently having multiple Fano resonances spectrally matching the fundamental excitation wavelengths and multiple plasmon resonance modes coinciding with the harmonic wavelengths. Thus far, the realization of such a plasmonic oligomer remains a challenge. This study demonstrates both theoretically and experimentally that a plasmonic nonamer consisting of a gold nanocross surrounded by eight nanorods simultaneously sustains multiple polarization-independent Fano resonances in the near-infrared region and several higher-order plasmon resonances in the visible spectrum. Due to coherent amplification of the nonlinear excitation sources by the Fano resonances and efficient scattering-enhanced outcoupling by the higher-order modes, the second-harmonic emission of the nonamer is significantly increased at multiple spectral bands, and their spectral positions and radiation patterns can be flexibly manipulated by easily tuning the length of the surrounding nanorods in the nonamer. These results provide us with important implications for realizing ultrafast multichannel nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Evolution of Plasmonic Metamolecule Modes in the Quantum Tunneling Regime

Plasmonic multinanoparticle systems exhibit collective electric and magnetic resonances that are fundamental for the development of state-of-the-art optical nanoantennas, metamaterials, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy substrates. While electric dipolar modes have been investigated in both the classical and quantum realm, little attention has been given to magnetic and other "dark" modes at the smallest dimensions. Here, we study the collective electric, magnetic, and dark modes of colloidally synthesized silver nanosphere trimers with varying interparticle separation using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). This technique enables direct visualization and spatially selective excitation of individual trimers, as well as manipulation of the interparticle distance into the subnanometer regime with the electron beam. Our experiments reveal that bonding electric and magnetic modes are significantly impacted by quantum effects, exhibiting a relative blueshift and reduced EELS amplitude compared to classical predictions. In contrast, the trimer's electric dark mode is not affected by quantum tunneling for even Ångström-scale interparticle separations. We employ a quantum-corrected model to simulate the effect of electron tunneling in the trimer which shows excellent agreement with experimental results. This understanding of classical and quantum-influenced hybridized modes may impact the development of future quantum plasmonic materials and devices, including Fano-like molecular sensors and quantum metamaterials.

Polarization State of Light Scattered from Quantum Plasmonic Dimer Antennas

Plasmonic antennas are able to concentrate and re-emit light in a controllable manner through strong coupling between metallic nanostructures. Only recently has it found that quantum mechanical effects can drastically change the coupling strength as the feature size approaches atomic scales. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the evolution of the resonance peak and its polarization state as the dimer-antenna gap narrows to subnanometer scale. We clearly can identify the classical plasmonic regime, a crossover regime where nonlocal screening plays an important role, and the quantum regime where a charge transfer plasmon appears due to interparticle electron tunneling. Moreover, as the gap decreases from tens of to a few nanometers, the bonding dipole mode tends to emit photons with increasing polarizability. When the gap narrows to quantum regime, a significant depolarization of the mode emission is observed due to the reduction of the charge density of coupled quantum plasmons. These results would be beneficial for the understanding of quantum effects on emitting-polarization of nanoantennas and the development of quantum-based photonic nanodevices.

Bonding and Anti-bonding Modes of Plasmon Coupling Effects in TiO2-Ag Core-shell Dimers

Bonding and anti-bonding modes of plasmon coupling effects are numerically investigated in TiO2-Ag core-shell nano dimers. First, splitting phenomena of the coupled anti-bonding modes are observed under the longitudinal polarization when the distance between the monomers decreases to a certain level. Second, one of the split resonance modes is identified to be formed by the dipole anti-bonding mode of the monomers from charge density distribution patterns. Those split modes have similar redshift behaviors as the coupled dipole bonding modes in the same situations. Furthermore, the intensities of those anti-bonding modes weaken with decreasing distance between the monomers, because of the interaction of the induced dipole moment in the monomers and the charge distribution variation on the facing surfaces of the gap by the coulomb attraction. Other split bands are the higher-order mode (octupole-like or triakontadipole-like), which do not have obvious peak-shift behavior, and the intensities have very little attenuation with decreasing distance. Finally, the coupling of the bonding and anti-bonding modes under the longitudinal polarization is symmetric (bonding).

Optical coherent thermal emission by excitation of magnetic polariton in multilayer nanoshell trimer

A theoretical demonstration is given of coherent thermal emission via the visible region by exciting magnetic polaritons in isolated metal-dielectric-metal multilayer nanoshells and the collective behavior in a trimer comprising multilayer nanoshells. The dipolar metallic core induces magnetic polaritons in the dielectric shell creating a large enhancement of the emissivity, whose mechanism is different from that of film-coupled metamaterials. The coupling effect of the magnetic polaritons and the electric/magnetic modes of symmetric nanoparticle trimers is discussed to understand the collective behavior in self-assembled nanoparticle clusters with potential solar energy utilizations. The concept of hybridization is employed to understand the collective magnetic polaritons of a multilayer nanoshell trimer. The fundamental understanding gained herein opens up new ways to explore, control, and tailor spectral absorptance, thus facilitating rational design of novel self-assembled nanoclusters for energy harvesting.
