Abstract
We report a one-pot synthesis of (E)-trisubstituted enones from acrylic acids through the in situ generation of a 2-pyridyl ester and subsequent cross-electrophile coupling with a nickel catalyst under reducing conditions. The scope of trisubstituted enones is broad and compatible with functionality that can be challenging in established olefination techniques. We highlight conditions necessary to suppress undesired side reactions from the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl and improve cross-electrophile coupling approaches to prepare enones.

Abstract
Carbonylation processes have become widely recognized as a versatile, convenient, and low-cost method for the synthesis of high-value compounds. Given the great importance of heterocyclic compounds, the carbonylative approach has become increasingly important for their synthesis. In this mini-review, as a class of benzo-fused nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, we summarized and discussed the recent achievements on the synthesis and functionalization of indole derivatives via carbonylative approaches.

Abstract
A regiodivergent allylation of 1H-indoles highly selectively at the C3 and N1 positions with β-acyl allylic sulfides through desulfurative C-C/C-N bond-forming reactions has been developed under mild conditions. Notably, the remarkable site-selective switch can be achieved by a delicate choice of solvents and bases. This cost-efficient method displays a broad substrate scope, good functional compatibility, and excellent site-selectivity, thus offering a divergent synthesis of indole substituted α-branched enones, which possess diverse potential opportunities for further applications and derivatization.

Abstract
A cobalt(II)-catalyzed C2-H carbonylation of indoles with amines toward indole-2-carboxamides has been developed. By employing Co(OAc)2·4H2O as an inexpensive catalyst and using benzene-1,3,5-triyl triformate (TFBen) as the CO surrogate, a variety of indole-2-carboxamide derivatives were produced in moderate to high yields. Additionally, several bioactive-molecule-related compounds can be applied as substrates, as well.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed reductive annulation cascade reaction that consists of a formal anti-carborhodation of a C≡C bond and an aromatic C-H carbonylation cascade for producing cyclopenta[de]quinoline-2,5(1H,3H)-diones is described. This method uses the Mn reductant to reductively regenerate the active rhodium species, hence obviating the need for prefunctionalization, and represents a new route to the carbonylation of aromatic C-H bonds with alkynes leading to aryl vinyl ketone frameworks.

Abstract
We describe here the design of a palladium catalyzed route to generate aryl ketones via the carbonylative coupling of (hetero)arenes and aryl- or vinyl-triflates. In this, the use of the large bite angle Xantphos ligand on palladium provides a unique avenue to balance the activation of the relatively strong C(sp2)–OTf bond with the ultimate elimination of a new class of potent Friedel–Crafts acylating agent: N-acyl pyridinium salts. The latter can be exploited to modulate reactivity and selectivity in carbonylative arene functionalization chemistry, and allow the efficient synthesis of ketones with a diverse array of (hetero)arenes. A palladium catalyzed approach to the overall carbonylative functionalization of arenes to form ketones with aryl- and vinyl-triflates is described.![]()

Abstract
We describe the development of a new palladium-catalyzed method to generate ketones via the oxidative coupling of two arenes and CO. This transformation is catalyzed by simple palladium salts, and is postulated to proceed via the conversion of arenes into high energy aroyl triflate electrophiles. Exploiting the latter can also allow the synthesis of unsymmetrical ketones from two different arenes. A palladium catalyzed route to prepare aryl ketones from their two fundamental building blocks, two arenes and carbon monoxide, is described.![]()

Abstract
The direct preparation of ketones from carboxylate anions is greatly limited by the required use of organolithium reagents or activated acyl sources that need to be independently prepared. Herein, a specific magnesium amide additive is used to activate and control the addition of more tolerant Grignard reagents to carboxylate anions. This strategy enables the modular synthesis of ketones from CO2 and the preparation of isotopically labeled pharmaceutical building blocks in a single operation.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of pyridoisoquinolinones, through Pd-catalyzed carbonylative annulation of 2-benzylpyridines, has been developed. The pyridinyl moiety in the substrate acts as both a directing group and an internal nucleophile for sp2 C-H activation and pyridocarbonylation. The ready availability of 2-benzylpyridines as well as the operational practicality makes this transformation potentially useful for the synthesis of analogues of protoberberine alkaloids.

Abstract
Green Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions belong to the most desired transformations in organic chemistry. The resulting ketones constitute important intermediates, building blocks, and functional molecules in organic synthesis as well as for the chemical industry. Over the past 60 years, advances in this topic have focused on how to make this reaction more economically and environmentally friendly by using green acylating conditions, such as stoichiometric acylations and catalytic homogeneous and heterogeneous acylations. However, currently well-established methodologies for their synthesis either produce significant amounts of waste or proceed under harsh conditions, limiting applications. Here, we present a new protocol for the straightforward and selective introduction of acyl groups into (hetero)arenes without directing groups by using available olefins with inexpensive CO. In the presence of commercial palladium catalysts, inter- and intramolecular carbonylative C-H functionalizations take place with good regio- and chemoselectivity. Compared to classical Friedel-Crafts chemistry, this novel methodology proceeds under mild reaction conditions. The general applicability of this methodology is demonstrated by the direct carbonylation of industrial feedstocks (ethylene and diisobutene) as well as of natural products (eugenol and safrole). Furthermore, synthetic applications to drug molecules are showcased.

Abstract
A ruthenium-catalyzed reductive amination without an external hydrogen source has been developed using carbon monoxide as the reductant and ruthenium(III) chloride (0.008-2 mol %) as the catalyst. The method was applied to the synthesis of antianxiety agent ladasten.

Abstract
A new and mild method for the efficient synthesis of 3,3-dichloro-2-sulfonyliminoindolines via AcOH-mediated dichloroimination of indoles using chloramine-B is presented. Application of this method to the efficient construction of pyrrolidinoindoles and N-C3 linked pyrrolidinoindolines is demonstrated.
