Abstract
The subjects of the article are halogen bonds between either XCN or XCCH (X = Cl, Br, I) and the carbene carbon atom in imidazol-2-ylidene (I) or its derivatives (IR2) with experimentally significant and systematically increased R substituents at both nitrogen atoms: methyl = Me, iso-propyl = iPr, tert-butyl = tBu, phenyl = Ph, mesityl = Mes, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl = Dipp, 1-adamantyl = Ad. It is shown that the halogen bond strength increases in the order Cl < Br < I and the XCN molecule forms stronger complexes than XCCH. Of all the carbenes considered, IMes2 forms the strongest and also the shortest halogen bonds with an apogee for complex IMes2⋯ICN for which D0 = 18.71 kcal/mol and dC⋯I = 2.541 Å. In many cases, IDipp2 forms as strong halogen bonds as IMes2. Quite the opposite, although characterized by the greatest nucleophilicity, ItBu2 forms the weakest complexes (and the longest halogen bonds) if X ≠ Cl. While this finding can easily be attributed to the steric hindrance exerted by the highly branched tert-butyl groups, it appears that the presence of the four C-H⋯X hydrogen bonds may also be of importance here. Similar situation occurs in the case of complexes with IAd2.

Nature of Beryllium, Magnesium, and Zinc Bonds in Carbene⋯MX 2 (M = Be, Mg, Zn; X = H, Br) Dimers Revealed by the IQA, ETS-NOCV and LED Methods. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms232314668. Abstract
The nature of beryllium−, magnesium− and zinc−carbene bonds in the cyclopropenylidene⋯MX2 (M = Be, Mg, Zn; X = H, Br) and imidazol-2-ylidene⋯MBr2 dimers is investigated by the joint use of the topological QTAIM-based IQA decomposition scheme, the molecular orbital-based ETS-NOCV charge and energy decomposition method, and the LED energy decomposition approach based on the state-of-the-art DLPNO-CCSD(T) method. All these methods show that the C⋯M bond strengthens according to the following order: Zn < Mg << Be. Electrostatics is proved to be the dominant bond component, whereas the orbital component is far less important. It is shown that QTAIM/IQA underestimates electrostatic contribution for zinc bonds with respect to both ETS-NOCV and LED schemes. The σ carbene→MX2 donation appears to be much more important than the MX2→ carbene back-donation of π symmetry. The substitution of hydrogen atoms by bromine (X in MX2) strengthens the metal−carbene bond in all cases. The physical origin of rotational barriers has been unveiled by the ETS-NOCV approach.

Abstract
The subject of research is forty dimers formed by imidazol-2-ylidene (I) or its derivative (IR2) obtained by replacing the hydrogen atoms in both N-H bonds with larger important and popular substituents of increasing complexity (methyl = Me, iso-propyl = iPr, tert-butyl = tBu, phenyl = Ph, mesityl = Mes, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl = Dipp, 1-adamantyl = Ad) and fundamental proton donor (HD) molecules (HF, HCN, H2O, MeOH, NH3). While the main goal is to characterize the generally dominant C⋯H-D hydrogen bond engaging a carbene carbon atom, an equally important issue is the often omitted analysis of the role of accompanying secondary interactions. Despite the often completely different binding possibilities of the considered carbenes, and especially HD molecules, several general trends are found. Namely, for a given carbene, the dissociation energy values of the IR2⋯HD dimers increase in the following order: NH3< H2O < HCN ≤ MeOH ≪ HF. Importantly, it is found that, for a given HD molecule, IDipp2 forms the strongest dimers. This is attributed to the multiplicity of various interactions accompanying the dominant C⋯H-D hydrogen bond. It is shown that substitution of hydrogen atoms in both N-H bonds of the imidazol-2-ylidene molecule by the investigated groups leads to stronger dimers with HF, HCN, H2O or MeOH. The presented results should contribute to increasing the knowledge about the carbene chemistry and the role of intermolecular interactions, including secondary ones.

Abstract
This article discusses the properties of as many as 30 carbene–ZnX2 (X = H, Me, Et) complexes featuring a zinc bond C⋯Zn. The group of carbenes is represented by imidazol-2-ylidene and its nine derivatives (labeled as IR), in which both hydrogen atoms of N-H bonds have been substituted by R groups with various spatial hindrances, from the smallest Me, iPr, tBu through Ph, Tol, and Xyl to the bulkiest Mes, Dipp, and Ad. The main goal is to study the relationship between type and size of R and X and both the strength of C⋯Zn and the torsional angle of the ZnX2 plane with respect to the plane of the imidazol-2-ylidene ring. Despite the considerable diversity of R and X, the range of dC⋯Zn is quite narrow: 2.12–2.20 Å. On the contrary, D0 is characterized by a fairly wide range of 18.5–27.4 kcal/mol. For the smallest carbenes, the ZnX2 molecule is either in the plane of the carbene or is only slightly twisted with respect to it. The twist angle becomes larger and more varied with the bulkier R. However, the value of this angle is not easy to predict because it results not only from the presence of steric effects but also from the possible presence of various interatomic interactions, such as dihydrogen bonds, tetrel bonds, agostic bonds, and hydrogen bonds. It has been shown that at least some of these interactions may have a non-negligible influence on the structure of the IR–ZnX2 complex. This fact should be taken into account in addition to the commonly discussed R⋯X steric repulsion.

Abstract
The reactions of the pyridine-functionalized silylene LNSi [L = PhC(NtBu)2; N = 2-(methylamido)pyridine] with zinc and cadmium halides are described. These resulted in the formation of a series of zinc and cadmium silylene complexes: [LNSi-ZnX2] (X = Cl, Br, I) and [{LNSi-CdI2}2], which is the first cadmium silylene compound. Subsequent reaction of these silylene complexes with elemental sulfur and selenium under mild conditions at room temperature afforded under activation of these elements the corresponding silanethione-stabilized zinc [(LNSi═S)-ZnX2] (X = Cl, I) and cadmium [(LNSi═S)-CdI2] complexes and the silaneselenone-stabilized zinc species [(LNSi═Se)-ZnCl2]. A selective insertion of the group 16 elements into the M-Si bond of the silylenes was observed. Because of metal coordination, the Si-chalcogen bond lengths in the silanethiones and silaneselenones are enlarged and thus range between a single and a double bond. All new compounds were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, and IR spectroscopy.

In this study, enzyme inhibition and antioxidant activity analyzes of previously characterized pyridine-enhanced precatalyst preparation stabilization and initiation (PEPPSI)-type Palladium(II) complexes with benzimidazole-type ligands {dichloro[L]pyridine palladium(II), L1: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[benzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L2: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[4-chloro benzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L3: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3-methylbenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L4: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3,4,5-thrimethoxybenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L5: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[3-naphthylbenzylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene, L6: 1-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-3-[anthracen-9-ylmethylbenzimidazole]-2-ylidene} were performed and evaluated as potential drugs for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. Inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) complexes was determined for the first time in literature. Chelating activities of the complexes were determined and compared with EDTA. Electrochemical characterization was performed using cyclic voltammetry method. Moreover, global reactivity descriptors and electronic transitions were evaluated by DFT/TDDFT methods and molecular docking interactions with human acetylcholine esterase, human butyrylcholine esterase and oxidoreductase were studied.

Abstract
The present account reviews the most recent noteworthy developments on the synthesis, structure and catalytic applications of Zn-NHC species, a class of complexes that have attracted attention over the past five to ten years due to their enhanced robustness and hydrolytic stability versus classical Zn organometallics. In particular, thanks to NHC stabilization, access to unprecedented Zn species were recently achieved, including two-coordinate Zn(II) organocations and thermally stable molecularly well-defined Zn hydride species, opening the way to effective Zn-mediated hydro-silylation/-boration catalysis of various unsaturated substrates under mild conditions. The potential of NHC-Zn species for the stabilization of unprecedented Zn species and use in various catalytic applications is only emerging and the vast array of readily available NHC structures should promote future developments of the field.

Abstract
The N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene adducts (NHC)PH were reacted with AlMe3 in toluene to afford the monoaluminum complexes [{(IDipp)PH}AlMe3 ] and [{(IMes)PH}AlMe3 ] (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). In contrast, the dialuminum complex [{(Me IMes)PH}(AlMe3 )2 ] was obtained for Me IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene. These complexes served as initiators for the efficient ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide in toluene at 60 °C. High degrees of isoselectivity were found for the poly(rac-lactide) obtained in the presence of the monoaluminum complexes (Pm up to 0.92, Tm up to 191 °C), whereas almost atactic polymers were produced by the dialuminum complex. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that the polymerization proceeds via a coordination-insertion mechanism with the carbene-phosphinidene ligands acting as stereodirecting groups.

Abstract
Catalytic carbene-transfer reactions constitute a class of highly useful transformations in organic synthesis. Although catalysts based on a range of transition-metals have been reported, the readily accessible nickel(II)-based complexes have been rarely used. Herein, an air-stable nickel(II)-carborane complex is reported as a well-defined, versatile and recyclable catalyst for selective carbene transfer reactions with low catalyst loading under mild conditions. This catalyst is effective for several types of reactions including diastereoselective cyclopropanation, epoxidation, selective X-H insertions (X = C, N, O, S, Si), particularly for the unprotected substrates. This represents a rare example of carborane ligands in base metal catalysis.

Mercury(II) Complexes of Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Steric Effects of the Backbone Substituent. Molecules 2020; 25:molecules25163741. Abstract
Mercury(II) complexes (Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (1b), (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) and (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgMe (2c) supported by anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes have been obtained in good yields from the reaction of the potassium salt of N-heterocyclic carbene ligand precursors and mercury(II) salts, HgCl2 and MeHgI. These molecules have been characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. X-ray crystal structures of 1b and 2b are also presented. Interestingly, complex 1b is polymeric {(Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl}n in the solid state, as a result of inter-molecular Hg-O contacts, and features rare three coordinate mercury sites with a T-shaped arrangement, whereas the (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) is monomeric and has a linear, two-coordinate mercury center. The formation of T-shaped structure and the aggregation of complex 1b is attributable to the reduced steric demand of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand backbone substituent.

Abstract
During the last decade, organometallic, coordination, and catalytic chemistry of the three-dimensional metals such as copper (Cu) has been greatly affected by the emergence of nitrogen heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. The NHCs, and in particular the mononuclear CuI-based ones, have been proven vastly useful in several applications such as in biosynthesis, catalysis, photochemistry, etc. This review tries to thoroughly describe a series of mononuclear CuI NHC complexes and their subcategories such as heteroleptics, and bidentate and tridentate heteroatom complexes, and give some detailed insights on their development, emergence, and applications. A brief outlook is also disclosed to enable other researchers to further develop a platform for future advances and studies in the field of CuI-based NHCs.

Novel triplet germylenes in focus: normal vs. abnormal triplet exocyclic tetrazol-5-vinylidene germylenes at DFT. J Mol Model 2019; 25:371. Abstract
Substituent effects on stability (assumed as the singlet and triplet energy gaps, ΔΕS-T) of novel 1,4-disubstituted-tetrazole-5-vinylidene germylenes (normal, 1R) and their corresponding 1,3-disubstituted-tetrazole-5-vinylidene germylenes (abnormal, 2R) are computed and compared, at B3LYP/6-311++G** and M06/6-311++G**, where R = H, CN, CF3, F, SH, C6H6, OMe, and OH. Interestingly, every triplet vinylidene germylene shows more stability than its corresponding singlet. Also, every triplet abnormal isomer (2R) emerges to be more stable than its corresponding normal (1R). All abnormal 2R isomers show broader band gaps (ΔEHOMO-LUMO) and higher nucleophilicity (N), but less electrophilicity (ω) than their corresponding normal 1R isomers. The NICS (nuclear-independent chemical shift) results indicate that every 1R (except singlet 2Ph) emerges more aromatic than its corresponding 2R. Our Hammet studies indicate that 1R is more sensitive to the electronic effects of substituents, R, than 2R. Electron-donating species increase N in both 1R and 2R, while electron-withdrawing groups increase stability.

Abstract
High-oxidation-state 3d metal species have found a wide range of applications in modern synthetic chemistry and materials science. They are also implicated as key reactive species in biological reactions. These applications have thus prompted explorations of their formation, structure, and properties. While the traditional wisdom regarding these species was gained mainly from complexes supported by nitrogen- and oxygen-donor ligands, recent studies with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which are widely used for the preparation of low-oxidation-state transition metal complexes in organometallic chemistry, have led to the preparation of a large variety of isolable high-oxidation-state 3d metal complexes with NHC ligation. Since the first report in this area in the 1990s, isolable complexes of this type have been reported for titanium(IV), vanadium(IV,V), chromium(IV,V), manganese(IV,V), iron(III,IV,V), cobalt(III,IV,V), nickel(IV), and copper(II). With the aim of providing an overview of this intriguing field, this Review summarizes our current understanding of the synthetic methods, structure and spectroscopic features, reactivity, and catalytic applications of high-oxidation-state 3d metal NHC complexes of titanium to copper. In addition to this progress, factors affecting the stability and reactivity of high-oxidation-state 3d metal NHC species are also presented, as well as perspectives on future efforts.

Bonding Situation of Bis-gold Chloride Complexes with N-heterocyclic Carbene-Analogues [(AuCl)2-NHEMe] (E=C – Pb) based on DFT Calculations. Z PHYS CHEM 2017. Abstract
Abstract
We computationally investigated the structure and bonding situation of bis-gold chloride complexes, (AuCl)2, containing N-heterocyclic carbenes and analogues, called tetrylenes [(AuCl)2-NHEMe] (Au2-NHE) with E=C to Pb, using density functional theory (DFT) at the BP86 level with the basis sets def2-SVP, def2-TZVPP, and TZ2P+. The nature of the (AuCl)2-NHEMe bond in the Au2-NHE complexes was analyzed using charge and energy decomposition methods. The calculated equilibrium structures of the Au2-NHE complexes showed that the tetrylene ligands, NHEMe (E=C to Ge), are bonded in a head-on fashion to the bis-gold chloride fragment, (AuCl)2, and that the structure of Au2-NHSn contains a distorted head-on NHSn ligand, and the NHPb ligand is bonded in a side-on mode to the bis-gold chloride fragment, (AuCl)2. The theoretical calculation of bond dissociation energy (BDE) suggests that the bis-gold chloride-NHEMe bond strength increases from Au2-NHC to Au2-NHSi and then significantly decreases from Au2-NHSi to Au2-NHSn, and the strongest bond is exhibited for Au2-NHPb. The EDA-NOCV results and NOCV pairs indicate that the NHEMe ligand in the Au2-NHE complexes is a strong σ-donor and a weak π-acceptor, as well as a very weak π-donor (AuCl)2←{NHEMe}. The trend in the Au-E bond strength resulted from the increase in (AuCl)2←NHEMe donation. The results of this study may establish an interesting class of compounds worthy of further study.

Abstract
One-pot synthesis of C-bound triazolate complexes of mercury(ii) from N-substituted triazoles with Hg(OAc)2 have been achieved. Further methylation of one of these complexes yielded a monomeric N-heterocyclic carbene complex.
