Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of interactive online education given by peers or adults on anxiety, self-efficacy, quality of life, disease knowledge and management in adolescents with allergic asthma. METHODS This was a randomized controlled trial. The study sample consisted of 84 adolescents divided into experimental groups (peer education group, adult education group) and a control group. Peer and adult groups who received training were also compared with each other. The adolescents in the peer or adult education groups were given online interactive education. Data were collected from the adolescents before and immediately after education, one and three months after education. RESULTS The study was completed by 41 adolescents. The anxiety scores of the adolescents in the experimental groups were lower immediately and one month after education than those of the control group (p = .006; p = .012, respectively). The self-efficacy, disease knowledge and management scores of the adolescents in the experimental groups immediately after education and one and three months after education were higher than those in the control group (p < .001; p < .001; p = .015, respectively and p < .001; p < .001; p < .001, respectively). There was no difference between the groups in terms of quality of life (p > .05). No difference was found between the peer and adult groups in terms of anxiety, self-efficacy, quality of life, disease knowledge and management (p > .05). CONCLUSION Based on our results, peer or adult education reduced adolescents' anxiety, increased self-efficacy, and disease knowledge and management, but there was no effect on quality of life. There was no difference in measured values between the peer and adult education groups.

Abstract
AIM To explore children and young people's (CYP) (5-24 years of age) self-reported experiences of asthma self-management strategies (ASMS) with nursing involvement across various settings. BACKGROUND Childhood asthma is an increasingly significant health issue, highlighting the importance of acquiring self-management skills to optimise future health outcomes. Registered nurses play a pivotal role in delivering appropriate, personalized self-management support. METHODS This integrative review searched four electronic databases: Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature via Elton B. Stephens Company, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Object, View and Interactive Design (OVID), and PubMed, that followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis flowchart. Included studies were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Braun and Clarks thematic analysis was used to generate themes, and sub-themes. FINDINGS Fifteen studies were included for review. Thematic analysis generated three themes being healthy literacy; health and wellbeing; and tools and working together. CONCLUSIONS Asthma continues to have negative physical, psychological, and social implications among CYP. CYP are both willing and capable of engaging in ASMS and learning self-management skills, however, continue to have unmet self-management needs. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Strategies must bolster health literacy, improve physical and psychological health, and harness interactive, youth-centric, and informative tools to facilitate communication and decrease the burden of self-management. Applications pose a promising avenue for self-management support. This age group remains under-explored and future research should enable meaningful engagement with CYP to better understand their perspectives and improve strategy success.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The soaring prevalence of depression and anxiety in children, teenagers, and young adults is now a public health epidemic, yet access to timely evidence-based mental health treatment is often lacking due to a severe shortage of mental health providers. This article provides an overview of the current state of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents as well as first-line evidence-based treatment. The Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE) program, a cognitive-behavioral skills-building intervention, is highlighted as an evidence-based intervention for timely treatment that can be delivered by NPs, physicians, and physician associates/assistants in primary care settings, school-based health centers, and chronic care clinics with reimbursement as well as in schools and universities as a preventive mental health intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health outcomes in nurses have historically indicated a greater prevalence of anxiety, depression, and suicide than the general population. It is vital to provide programming for healthcare workers to gain the necessary skills to reduce burnout and improve their mental and physical health. AIMS The aims of this study were to evaluate mental health outcomes and healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors among nurses and other hospital employees who completed MINDBODYSTRONG, a cognitive-behavioral skill building program. METHODS A pre-experimental, pre- and poststudy design was used to examine mental health and well-being outcomes among 100 hospital personnel who participated in MINDBODYSTRONG, a program designed to improve coping and resiliency and decrease stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Outcomes measured included healthy lifestyle behaviors, healthy lifestyle beliefs, anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. RESULTS One hundred hospital personnel, including 93 nurses, completed the pre- and post-survey. Among all participants, post- MINDBODYSTRONG scores for healthy lifestyle beliefs (p = .00; Cohen's d = 0.52) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.74) increased significantly with medium effects, while depression (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.51), anxiety (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.54), stress (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.33), and burnout (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.37) decreased significantly with small and medium effects. The program produced even stronger positive effects on mental health outcomes for participants who started the study with higher levels of depression and anxiety. LINKING EVIDENCE TO PRACTICE Anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout decreased significantly postintervention. Participants also significantly improved their healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors with the MINDBODYSTRONG program. MINDBODYSTRONG is an effective program that reduces anxiety, depression, burnout, and stress and improves healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors in hospital-based clinicians. It is of utmost importance to provide evidence-based programs to improve mental resiliency and decrease stress, anxiety, burnout, and depressive symptoms, which will ultimately improve the safety and quality of health care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by episodic wheezing, cough, and shortness of breath resulting from airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation. Over 300 million people are affected worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing by 50% every decade. Assessing the quality of life in children with asthma is fundamental, as consistently poor health-related quality of life is associated with poorly controlled asthma. This study is aimed to evaluate and compare factors associated with HRQOL between healthy controls and children with asthma. METHODS In the current case-control study, 50 children aged 8-12 years with asthma (cases) enrolled at outpatient hospital clinics by a trained pediatric allergist/immunologist (A.P.) and matched with 50 healthy controls by age and sex. All enrolled subjects were interviewed utilizing the PedsQL questionnaire to assess health-related quality of life; also, patient demographics, including age, sex, and family income status, were obtained from a questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 100 children comprising 62 males and 38 females with a mean age of 9.63 ± 1.38 years, participated in this study. The average score of children with asthma was 81.63 ± 9.38, and the average score for healthy participants was 89.58 ± 7.91. We found that asthma was associated with a significant drop in health-related quality of life in this sample. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that the PedsQL score and its subscales, except social functioning, were significantly higher in children with asthma compared to healthy ones. Also, SABA use, nocturnal symptoms, and asthma severity are negatively related to the health-related quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Under-perception of airflow limitation is more common in older adults with asthma and may lead to under-reporting of asthma symptoms. Asthma management self-efficacy is linked with better asthma control and quality of life (QoL). We sought to examine asthma and medication beliefs as a mediator in the relationship between both under-perception and self-efficacy with asthma outcomes. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited participants with asthma ≥60 years from hospital-affiliated practices in East Harlem and the Bronx, New York. Perception of airflow limitation was measured for 6 weeks by having participants enter peak expiratory flow (PEF) estimates into an electronic peak flow meter followed by PEF blows. We used validated instruments to assess asthma and medication beliefs, asthma management self-efficacy, asthma control, and QoL. Asthma self-management behaviors (SMB) were quantified by electronic and self-report measures of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) adherence and observation of inhaler technique. RESULTS The sample comprised 331 participants (51% Hispanic, 27% Black, 84% female). Beliefs mediated the relationship between greater under-perception and better self-reported asthma control (β = -0.08, p = .02) and better asthma QoL (β =0.12, p = .02). Higher self-efficacy was also associated with better reported asthma control (β = -0.10, p = .006) and better asthma QoL (β =0.13, p = .01) in this indirect effect through beliefs. Accurate perception of airflow limitation was associated with higher adherence to SMB (β = 0.29, p = .003). CONCLUSIONS Less threatening asthma beliefs may be maladaptive in under-perception of airflow limitation by contributing to under-reporting of asthma symptoms, but adaptive in the context of higher self-efficacy and better asthma control.

Abstract
Asthma is one of the most common pediatric chronic physical conditions. Youth with comorbid asthma and anxiety/depressive symptoms tend to have less controlled asthma and an increased use of health services in schools. The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the literature on educational and behavioral/ cognitive behavioral skills interventions for children with asthma and anxiety/depressive symptoms. Five electronic databases and forward/backward citations were searched. Eleven peer reviewed articles were retained for review. Main findings of the limited evidence suggest that educational and behavioral/cognitive behavioral skills programs may increase asthma knowledge and asthma-related self-efficacy while reducing anxiety/depressive symptoms. One study showed a decrease in use of quick relief inhalers and another had increased adherence to asthma controller medication. The literature indicates that educational and cognitive behavioral skills programs can have a positive impact on children with asthma and symptoms of anxiety/depression. School-based skills programs had better retention than outpatient programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE One in five children report experiencing bullying. Bullying in childhood affects the physical and emotional health and functioning of youth with immediate consequences, including depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, and suicidal ideation. Schools overwhelmingly are tasked with addressing bullying; however, school-based programs are often focused on preventing bullying from occurring. There is a paucity of evidence-based interventions for adolescents who have directly experienced bullying and suffer from adverse health outcomes, especially when they present to the mental health setting. METHODS This pre-experimental study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of the MINDSTRONG to Combat Bullying Program for adolescents who have experienced bullying with concurrent mental health symptoms. RESULTS Twenty adolescents and their parent dyads enrolled in the MINDSTRONG to Combat Bullying program. Significant reductions were found over time in adolescent self-reported depressive, anxiety and somatic symptoms as well as bullying victimization frequency, with large positive effect sizes for the intervention. Significant increases in adolescent personal beliefs also were found. CONCLUSIONS Although several of the intervention sessions needed to be rescheduled and many of the adolescents did not complete their weekly skills building homework, MINDSTRONG to Combat Bullying was found to be a highly acceptable intervention for adolescents that was effective in reducing physical and mental health symptoms as well as perceptions of bullying victimization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Pediatric populations represent a vulnerable research group. Careful thought must be given to many factors when designing and implementing pediatric intervention research studies. This article discusses methodological and implementation lessons learned from two pediatric intervention pilot studies and highlights facilitators and barriers encountered. TYPE OF METHOD Both studies used a pre/post with 6-week follow-up method and were adapted versions of an evidence-based program, Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE). ESSENTIAL FEATURES COPE is a 7-session, cognitive behavioral skills building intervention. COPE for Asthma was implemented in schools with small groups for elementary-aged children with asthma and symptoms of anxiety. Mindstrong to Combat Bullying was implemented individually in the outpatient mental health setting for adolescents who had experienced bullying with concurrent symptoms of depression/anxiety. METHODOLOGICAL APPLICATION Both intervention studies were successful in achieving their research aims, but more importantly the authors learned important lessons in how to successfully work with pediatric populations in research studies. Legal considerations, such as mandated reporting, suicide risk assessment and the inclusion of parents are reviewed. Other components, such as working with children vs. adolescents, integrating research into school-based settings vs. clinic-based settings, and completing intervention research in a group setting vs. individual setting are discussed. CONCLUSIONS The two pilot studies highlight important factors to consider when designing and implementing pediatric intervention studies. While challenges arise in working with this vulnerable population, research is ultimately needed to provide the best evidence-based care for our future generations. Abstract
PROBLEM Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a complex chronic condition that impacts physiologic and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents. Adolescents with T1D experience anxiety and depressive symptoms at 2 to 3 times the rate of the general adolescent population. Anxiety and depressive symptoms negatively impact disease management. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the gold standard therapeutic technique for treating anxiety and depressive symptoms. The aim of this integrative review was to examine and synthesize the extant literature exploring the effect of CBT on physiologic and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents with T1D. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Electronic databases were searched with the terms "type 1 diabetes" and "cognitive behavioral therapy." Studies were included if they were published between 2000 and 2020, evaluated a pediatric population (≤18 years of age), and included individuals with diagnosed T1D. SAMPLE 475 articles were identified in our initial search, and after removal of duplicates 353 articles remained. 339 did not meet inclusion criteria. A total of 14 papers met inclusion criteria. RESULTS All studies included CBT, but differed in delivery methods. Several studies demonstrated evidence of the feasibility and acceptability; however, there were mixed results regarding improvement of physiologic and psychosocial outcomes. CONCLUSIONS CBT is a feasible and acceptable intervention in adolescents with T1D. It may be a method of improving psychologic and psychosocial outcomes for this high-risk population. IMPLICATIONS In adolescents with T1D, screening and treatment for psychosocial comorbidities should occur regularly at endocrinology visits. CBT can be operationalized to fill this gap.

Abstract
Bullying is a long-standing problem with relatively few intervention options for individual youth who have experienced it and have adverse mental health concerns. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation are major consequences of bullying victimization. Although few evidence-based interventions have been put forth to address bullying victimization at the individual level, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and cognitive-behavioral skills building (CBSB) have been well researched for mental health concerns in youth. The purpose of the current article is to examine the theoretical framework of cognitive theory for individuals who have experienced bullying. Previous work that has addressed CBT for bullying interventions is described. Specific examples of how CBSB components could be applied to a bullying intervention program for youth are discussed. Ultimately, providing a theoretical framework to address this public health concern sets the stage for future intervention research. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nearly 30% of children are affected by chronic pain which puts a significant burden on the child's family and society with estimated cost of over $19.5 billion each year. Children and adolescent's quality of life is often impacted leading to physical disability, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, school stress or decreased performance, insomnia, and fatigue. The purposes of this paper are to: 1) provide an overview of chronic pain in children and adolescents; 2) describe findings from a quality improvement project that assessed the prevalence of negative mood, quality of life, functional disability, and coping with pain in teens with chronic pain, and 3) discuss screening, assessment and evidence-based management of co-morbid chronic pain and mental health problems in children and teens. FINDINGS Findings for a quality improvement project indicated that 16.8% of the adolescents scored high risk for depression, which was higher than the national average. Approximately 57% of adolescents were screened as high risk on the Pediatric Quality of Life inventory (PedsQL™). One in four adolescents showed poor functioning on the Functional Disability Inventory and nearly one-third of the adolescents reported poor coping with pain on the Pain Coping Questionnaire. This project indicates that adolescents with chronic pain are at high risk for mental health problems. The outcomes suggest the mental health needs of adolescents with chronic pain need to be identified and addressed to help improve outcomes. DISCUSSION Children and youth with chronic pain need to be routinely screened and assessed for mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression. The use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or CBT-skills building for children and youth with anxiety and depressive disorders has been widely studied and are helpful for children with chronic pain include psychoeducation, which helps the child to learn age and developmental specific information on chronic pain. Evidence-based manualized and internet-based CBT programs should be scaled rapidly to decrease depression and anxiety in children and youth with chronic pain.

Abstract
Children with chronic conditions (i.e., asthma) are more likely to have anxiety or depressive symptoms. Comorbid asthma and anxiety in children leads to increased morbidity, causing children to miss instructional time and parent/caregiver (CG) work absences. Asthma educational programs and mental health interventions have been developed, though no scalable programs integrate asthma education and mental health behavioral interventions for school-aged children. This study evaluated the sustained preliminary effects of an integrated asthma education and cognitive behavioral skills-building program, Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment for Asthma. Thirty-two children ages 8-12 years with asthma and symptoms of anxiety received the intervention. At 6-weeks postintervention, anxiety and CG-reported behavioral symptoms were significantly reduced, there were fewer missed doses of asthma controller medications, and asthma-related self-efficacy, personal beliefs, and the children's understanding of asthma significantly increased. Most children (n = 29, 91%) reported continued use of coping skills.

Abstract
Although alexithymia has been found to be associated with physical symptoms in psychosomatic disorders such as asthma, mechanisms linking this association are unknown. However, affective alexithymic features may be associated with physical symptoms in the presence of deficits in affective characteristics such as low empathy and high negative affect. This study aimed to assess direct effects of alexithymic traits on physical symptoms and indirect effects of these subscales through empathy and negative affect (e.g. depressive, anxious and stress symptoms) by controlling for asthma severity in patients with asthma. Three hundred patients with asthma completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Basic Empathy Scale (BES), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) and the Physical Symptoms Inventory (PSI). After controlling for asthma severity, the results showed that alexithymia subscales of the TAS-20 had no direct effects on physical symptoms, but the difficulty in identifying feelings (DIF) subscale of the TAS-20 was associated with affective empathy and negative affect. Affective empathy was significantly related to negative affect. Affective empathy and negative affect were associated with physical symptoms. The affective subscale of alexithymia on the TAS-20, that is DIF, indirectly affected physical symptoms through affective empathy and negative affect. Findings suggest that patients with asthma who have high levels of DIF may show high physical symptoms in the presence of low affective empathy and high negative affect.
