Diverse Functionality of Molecular Germanium: Emerging Opportunities as Catalysts

Fundamental research on germanium as the central element in compounds for bond activation chemistry and catalysis has achieved significant feats over the last two decades. Designing strategies for small molecule activations and the ultimate catalysts established capitalize on the orbital modalities of germanium, apparently imitating the transition-metal frontier orbitals. There is a growing body of examples in contemporary research implicating the tunability of the frontier orbitals through avant-garde approaches such as geometric constrained empowered reactivity, bimetallic orbital complementarity, cooperative reactivity, etc. The goal of this Perspective is to provide readers with an overview of the emerging opportunities in the field of germanium-based catalysis by perceiving the underlying key principles. This will help to convert the discrete set of findings into a more systematic vision for catalyst designs. Critical exposition on the germanium's frontier orbitals participations evokes the key challenges involved in innovative catalyst designs, wherein viewpoints are provided. We close by addressing the forward-looking directions for germanium-based catalytic manifold development. We hope that this Perspective will be motivational for applied research on germanium as a constituent of pragmatic catalysts.

Reaction of a Disilyne with Internal Alkynes: Reversible [1 + 2] Cycloaddition and Formation of Strained Unsaturated Silacycles

The reactions of NHB-stabilized disilyne (NHB)Si≡Si(NHB) (1, NHB = [ArN(CMe)2NAr]B, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with internal alkynes were described. Reaction of disilyne 1 with one equivalent of bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene led to a reversible [1 + 2] cycloaddition of one of the Si atoms with the alkyne and the insertion of the other Si into one of Ar rings with the formation of a silirenyl-silepin 2, whereas reaction of 1 with two equivalents of Me3SiCCSiMe3 resulted in the formal addition of the Csp-Si bond to the Si≡Si triple bond to give disilene (NHB)(Me3Si)Si=Si(CCSiMe3)(NHB). Reaction of 1 with 1,3-diyne Me3SiCCCCSiMe3 yielded a 1,2-disilacyclobut-3-ene via cycloaddition, ring expansion, and NHB 1,2-shift sequence. The initial [1 + 2] cycloaddition of one of the silicon atoms with an alkyne was strongly supported by DFT calculations. The results demonstrated the significant bis(silylene) character and rich synthetic potential of bis(boryl) disilyne 1.

Carbene-Stabilized Phosphagermylenylidene: A Heavier Analog of Isonitrile

Phosphagermylenylidenes (R-P═Ge), as heavier analogs of isonitriles, whether in their free state or as complexes with a Lewis base, have not been previously identified as isolable entities. In this study, we report the synthesis of a stable monomeric phosphagermylenylidene within the coordination sphere of a Lewis base under ambient conditions. This species was synthesized by Lewis base-induced dedimerization of a cyclic phosphagermylenylidene dimer or via Me3SiCl elimination from a phosphinochlorogermylene framework. The deliberate integration of a bulky, electropositive N-heterocyclic boryl group at the phosphorus site, combined with coordination stabilization by a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene at the low-valent germanium site, effectively mitigated its natural tendency toward oligomerization. Structural analyses and theoretical calculations have demonstrated that this unprecedented species features a P═Ge double bond, characterized by conventional electron-sharing π and σ bonds, complemented by lone pairs at both the phosphorus and germanium atoms. Preliminary reactivity studies show that this base-stabilized phosphagermylenylidene demonstrates facile release of ligands at the Ge atom, coordination to silver through the lone pair on P, and versatile reactivity including both (cyclo)addition and cleavage of the P═Ge double bond.

Boryl Ancillary Ligands: Influencing Stability and Reactivity of Amidinato-Silanone and Germanone Systems in Ammonia Activation

While the nucleophilic addition of ammonia to ketones is an archetypal reaction in classical organic chemistry, the reactivity of heavier group 14 carbonyl analogues (R2E=O; E=Si, Ge, Sn, or Pb) with NH3 remains sparsely investigated, primarily due to the synthetic difficulties in accessing heavier ketone congeners. Herein, we present a room-temperature stable boryl-substituted amidinato-silanone {(HCDippN)2B}{PhC(tBuN)2}Si=O (Dipp=2,6-iPr2C6H3) (together with its germanone analogue), formed from the corresponding silylene under a N2O atmosphere. This system reacts cleanly with ammonia in 1,2-fashion to give an isolable sila-hemiaminal complex {(HCDippN)2B}{PhC(tBuN)2}Si(OH)(NH2). Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the formation of this sila-hemiaminal is crucially dependent on the nature of the ancillary ligand scaffold. It is facilitated thermodynamically by the hemi-lability of the amidinate ligand (which allows for the formation of an energetically critical intramolecular N⋅⋅⋅HO hydrogen bond within the product) and is enabled mech-anistically by a process in which the silanone initially acts in umpolung fashion as a base (rather than an acid), due to the strongly electron-releasing and sterically bulky nature of the ancillary boryl ligand.

Reversible Coupling of Germylone with Isocyanates

The germylone dimNHCGe (5, dimNHC=diimino N-heterocyclic carbene) undergoes a [2+2] cycloaddition with isocyanates RNCO (R=4-tolyl or 3,5-xylyl) to furnish novel alkyl carboxamido germylenes 7 (R=4-tolyl) and 8 (R=3,5-xylyl), featuring a C-C bond between the former carbene carbon and the isocyanate moiety. Heating a mixture of 8 with 4-tolyl isocyanate to 100 °C results in isocyanate metathesis, demonstrating reversible C-C bond formation on the reduced germanium compound. DFT calculations suggest that this process occurs via the reductive dissociation of isocyanate from 8 that regenerates the parent Ge(0) compound 5.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Double 1,2-Carbon Migration at Mixed Heavier Sn=Ge Vinylidenes

1,2-migration is one recurring isomerization reaction in organic chemistry. In contrast, double 1,2-migration remains rare and limited to transition-metal complexes. Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of mixed heavier Sn=Ge vinylidenes. Double 1,2-carbon migration enables the isomerization of the stannagermenylidene (3) to the germastannenylidene (4). X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT calculations revealed that 3 and 4 feature a Sn=Ge double bond. The reaction of 3 with IMe4 (1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazoline-2-ylidene) results in the electron redistribution in the Sn=Ge core to give the germylone-stannylene adduct (5). Moreover, treatment of 3 with 0.25 equiv. of (AlCp*)4 produces the heteronuclear aluminyl stannagermyne (6).

Activation of non-polar bonds by an electron-rich gallagermylene

The electron-rich germylene LGa(μ-Cl)GeArMes (1) (L = CH[C(Me)N(Dipp)]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3, ArMes = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) shows promising potential in the σ-bond activation of unpolar molecules as is shown in oxidative addition reactions with H2 and P4, yielding L(Cl)GaGe(H)2ArMes (2) and L(Cl)Ga(P4)GeArMes (3). Compounds 2 and 3 were characterised spectroscopically (1H, 13C{1H}, (31P{1H}), IR) and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

Boryl-substituted low-valent heavy group 14 compounds

Low valent group 14 compounds exhibit diverse structures and reactivities. The employment of diazaborolyl anions (NHB anions), isoelectronic analogues to N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), in group 14 chemistry leads to the exceptional structures and reactivity. The unique combination of σ-electron donation and pronounced steric hindrance impart distinct structural characteristics to the NHB-substituted low valent group 14 compounds. Notably, the modulation of the HOMO-LUMO gap in these compounds with the diazaborolyl substituents results in novel reaction patterns in the activation of small molecules and inert chemical bonds. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in NHB-substituted low-valent heavy Group 14 compounds, emphasizing their synthesis, structural characteristics and application to small molecule activation.

A planar per-borylated digermene

A tetraboryl digermene synthesized by the reaction between a dianionic digermanide nucleophile and a boron halide electrophile is dimeric both in the solid state and in hydrocarbon solution. It features both a planar 'alkene-like' geometry for the Ge2B4 core, and an exceptionally short GeGe double bond. These structural features are consistent with the known electronic properties of the boryl group, and with lowest energy (in silico) fragmentation into two triplet bis(boryl)germylene fragments.

A silylene-stabilized ditin(0) complex and its conversion to methylditin cation and distannavinylidene

Due to their intrinsic high reactivity, isolation of tin(0) complexes remains challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of a silylene-stabilized ditin(0) complex (2) by reduction of a silylene-supported dibromostannylene (1) with 1 equivalent of magnesium (I) dimer in toluene. The structure of 2 was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density Functional Theory calculations revealed that complex 2 bears a Sn=Sn double bond and one lone pair of electrons on each of the Sn(0) atoms. Remarkably, complex 2 is readily methylated to give a mixed-valent methylditin cation (4), which undergoes topomerization in solution though a reversible 1,2-Me migration along a Sn=Sn bond. Computational studies showed that the three-coordinate Sn atom in 4 is the dominant electrophilic center, and allows for facile reaction with KHBBus3 furnishing an unprecedented N-heterocyclic silylenes-stabilized distannavinylidene (5). The synthesis of 2, 4 and 5 demonstrates the exceptional ability of N-heterocyclic silylenes to stabilize low valent tin complexes.

Lewis Acid Stabilized Diatomic Molecules of Group 14: A Computational Study on [(CO)4Fe]2E2 (E = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb)

A Lewis base and acid combination has been effectively employed to stabilize and isolate the low-valent group 14 compounds. We report DFT studies on stabilizing low-valent group 14 diatomics as adducts of Lewis acids employing transition metal carbonyl fragment iron tetracarbonyl [Fe(CO)4] as Lewis acid. Computational studies on [(CO)4Fe]2E2, E = C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb, predict five plausible isomers on its potential energy surface: linear (E2_L), bent (E2_B), three-membered (E2_T), dibridged (E2_D), and four-membered (E2_F). For the carbon analogue, the lowest energy configuration is linear and has a typical cumulenic structure, while silicon and germanium analogues favor three-membered cyclic isomers. Four-membered cyclic isomers are the most stable for tin and lead analogues.

A Convenient One-Pot Synthesis of a Sterically Demanding Aniline from Aryllithium Using Trimethylsilyl Azide, Conversion to β-Diketimines and Synthesis of a β-Diketiminate Magnesium Hydride Complex

This work reports the one-pot synthesis of sterically demanding aniline derivatives from aryllithium species utilising trimethylsilyl azide to introduce amine functionalities and conversions to new examples of a common N,N'-chelating ligand system. The reaction of TripLi (Trip = 2,4,6-iPr3-C6H2) with trimethylsilyl azide afforded the silyltriazene TripN2N(SiMe3)2 in situ, which readily reacts with methanol under dinitrogen elimination to the aniline TripNH2 in good yield. The reaction pathways and by-products of the system have been studied. The extension of this reaction to a much more sterically demanding terphenyl system suggested that TerLi (Ter = 2,6-Trip2-C6H3) slowly reacted with trimethylsilyl azide to form a silyl(terphenyl)triazenide lithium complex in situ, predominantly underwent nitrogen loss to TerN(SiMe3)Li in parallel, which afforded TerN(SiMe3)H after workup, and can be deprotected under acidic conditions to form the aniline TerNH2. TripNH2 was furthermore converted to the sterically demanding β-diketimines RTripnacnacH (=HC{RCN(Trip)}2H), with R = Me, Et and iPr, in one-pot procedures from the corresponding 1,3-diketones. The bulkiest proligand was employed to synthesise the magnesium hydride complex [{(iPrTripnacnac)MgH}2], which shows a distorted dimeric structure caused by the substituents of the sterically demanding ligand moieties.

Reactivity of free N-heterocyclic carbenes in dichloromethane

The reactivity of free 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (MeIPr) and 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IDipp) in dichloromethane was investigated. MeIPr reacts relatively slowly and selectively with the solvent under the formation of imidazolium salt [MeIPrH]Cl, which was characterised through NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. Through deuterium labelling experiments the reaction rate was determined. In contrast IDipp reacts unselectively to various imidazolium salts. Due to the slow decomposition rates of MeIPr and IDipp in CH2Cl2, reactions of the free carbenes with BeBr2 to [(MeIPr)BeBr2], [(MeIPr)2BeBr2] and [(IDipp)BeBr2] can be performed.

Synthesis of Homo-Metallic Heavier Analogues of Cyclobutene and the Cyclobutadiene Dianion

The reduction of the boryl-substituted SnII bromide {(HCDippN)2 B}Sn(IPrMe)Br with 1.5 equivalents of potassium graphite leads to the generation of the cyclic tetratin tetraboryl system K2 [Sn4 {B(NDippCH)2 }4 ], a homo-metallic heavier analogue of the cyclobutadiene dianion. This system is non-aromatic as determined by Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift Calculations (NICS(0)=-0.28, NICS(1)=-3.17), with the primary contributing resonance structures shown by Natural Resonance Theory (NRT) to involve a Sn=Sn double bond and 1,2-localized negative charges. Abstraction of the K+ cations or oxidation leads to contraction or cleavage of the Sn4 unit, respectively, while protonation generates the neutral dihydride 1,2-Sn4 {B(NDippCH)2 }4 H2 (a heavier homologue of cyclobutene) in a manner consistent with the predicted charge distribution in the [Sn4 {B(NDippCH)2 }4 ]2- dianion.

Disproportionation and Ligand Lability in Low Oxidation State Boryl-Tin Chemistry

Boryltin compounds featuring the metal in the+1 or 0 oxidation states can be synthesized from the carbene-stabilized tin(II) bromide (boryl)Sn(NHC)Br (boryl={B(NDippCH)2 }; NHC=C{(Ni PrCMe)2 }) by the use of strong reducing agents. The formation of the mono-carbene stabilized distannyne and donor-free distannide systems (boryl)SnSn(IPrMe)(boryl) (2) and K2 [Sn2 (boryl)2 ] (3), using Mg(I) and K reducing agents mirrors related germanium chemistry. In contrast to their lighter congeners, however, systems of the type [Sn(boryl)]n are unstable with respect to disproportionation. Carbene abstraction from 2 using BPh3 , and two-electron oxidation of 3 both result in the formation of a 2 : 1 mixture of the Sn(II) compound Sn(boryl)2 , and the hexatin cluster, Sn6 (boryl)4 (4). A viable mechanism for this rearrangement is shown by quantum chemical studies to involve a vinylidene intermediate (analogous to the isolable germanium compound, (boryl)2 Ge=Ge), which undergoes facile atom transfer to generate Sn(boryl)2 and trinuclear [Sn3 (boryl)2 ]. The latter then dimerizes to give the observed hexametallic product 4, with independent studies showing that similar trigermanium species aggregate in analogous fashion.

Organogermanium Analogues of Alkenes, Alkynes, 1,3-Dienes, Allenes, and Vinylidenes

In this review, the latest achievements in the field of multiply bonded organogermanium derivatives, mostly reported within the last two decades, are presented. The isolable Ge-containing analogues of alkenes, alkynes, 1,3-dienes, allenes, and vinylidenes are discussed, and for each class of unsaturated organogermanium compounds, the most representative examples are given. The synthetic approaches toward homonuclear multiply bonded combinations solely consisting of germanium atoms, and their heteronuclear variants containing germanium and other group 14 elements, both acyclic and cyclic, are discussed. The peculiar structural features and nonclassical bonding nature of the abovementioned compounds are discussed based on their spectroscopic and structural characteristics, in particular their crystallographic parameters (double bond length, trans-bending at the doubly bonded centers, and twisting about the double bond). The prospects for the practical use of the title compounds in synthetic and catalytic fields are also briefly discussed.

Sequential Reduction of Borylstibane to an Electronically Nonsymmetric Diboryldistibene Radical Anion

Understanding the formation of metal-metal bonds and their electronic structures is still a scientific task. We herein report on the stepwise synthesis of boryl-substituted antimony compounds in which the antimony atoms adopt four different oxidation states (+III, +II, +I, +I/0). Sb-C bond homolysis of Cp*[(HCNDip)₂B]SbCl (1; Cp* = C₅Me₅; Dip = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) gave diboryldichlorodistibane [(HCNDip)₂BSbCl]₂ (2), which reacted with KC₈ to form diboryldistibene [(HCNDip)₂BSb]₂ (3) and traces of cyclotetrastibane [(HCNDip)₂B]₃Sb₄Cl (5). One-electron reduction of 3 yielded the potassium salt of the diboryldistibene radical anion [(HCNDip)₂BSb]₂̇^-, [K(18-c-6)(OEt₂)][{(HCNDip)₂BSb}₂] (4), which exhibits an unprecedented inequivalent spin localization on the Sb-Sb bond and hence an unsymmetric electronic structure. Compounds 1-4 were characterized by heteronuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) (¹H, ¹³C, ¹¹B), infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy (3, 4), and single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD, 1-5), while the bonding nature of 3 and 4 was analyzed by quantum chemical calculations. EPR spectroscopy resolves the dissimilar Sb hyperfine tensors of 4, reflecting the inequivalent spin distribution, setting 4 uniquely apart from all previously characterized dipnictene radical anions.

A strongly twisted SiSi bond with resemblance to a buckled dimer in an unexpected isomer of hexasilabenzene

The reductive debromination of {N(SiMe₃)Ph}SiBr₃1 with Rieke magnesium yields the six-vertex amido-substituted silicon cluster 2 with zwitterionic character that represents an unprecedented isomer of hexasilabenzene. The topology of Si1 and Si2 in 2 has bonding features of a highly twisted disilene and resembles that of a buckled dimer of Si(100)2 × 1 reconstructed surfaces. Cluster 2 forms the adducts 3 and 4 with NHC^Me4 and DMAP, respectively. The NHC adduct 4 additionally coordinates to BH₃ which affords the saturated cluster BH₃NHC^Me4Si₆{N(SiMe₃)Ph}₆ (5). Furthermore, 2 undergoes addition with MeI and iodine to form the halogenated silicon clusters 6 and 7, respectively.

Chemistry of Compounds Based on 1,2,3-Triazolylidene-Type Mesoionic Carbenes

Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have established themselves as a popular class of compounds over the past decade. Primary reasons for this popularity are their modular synthesis and their strong donor properties. While such MICs have mostly been used in combination with transition metals, the past few years have also seen their utility together with main group elements. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments on this class of compounds that include, among others, (i) cationic and anionic MIC ligands, (ii) the donor/acceptor properties of these ligands with a focus on the several methods that are known for estimating such donor/acceptor properties, (iii) a detailed overview of 3d metal complexes and main group compounds with these MIC ligands, (iv) results on the redox and photophysical properties of compounds based on MIC ligands, and (v) an overview on electrocatalysis, redox-switchable catalysis, and small-molecule activation to highlight the applications of compounds based on MIC ligands in contemporary chemistry. By discussing several aspects from the synthetic, spectroscopic, and application point of view of these classes of compounds, we highlight the state of the art of compounds containing MICs and present a perspective for future research in this field.

Characterization of a Triplet Vinylidene

Singlet vinylidenes (R₂C=C:) are proposed as intermediates in a series of organic reactions, and very few have been studied by matrix isolation or gas-phase spectroscopy. Triplet vinylidenes, however, featuring two unpaired electrons at a monosubstituted carbon atom are thus far only predicted as electronically excited-state species and represent an unexplored class of carbon-centered diradicals. We report the photochemical generation and low-temperature EPR/ENDOR characterization of the first ground-state high-spin (triplet) vinylidene. The zero-field splitting parameters (D = 0.377 cm^–1 and |E|/D = 0.028) were determined, and the ¹³C hyperfine coupling tensor was obtained by ¹³C-ENDOR measurements. Most strikingly, the isotropic ¹³C hyperfine coupling constant (50 MHz) is far smaller than the characteristic values of triplet carbenes, demonstrating a unique electronic structure which is supported by quantum chemical calculations.

Isolation of a planar 1,2-dilithio-disilene and its conversion to a Si-B hybrid 2π-electron system and a planar tetraboryldisilene

Lithium reagents have long played important roles in synthetic chemistry. However, unsaturated organosilicon lithium reagents are few in number. Herein, we describe the first isolation of a 1,2-dilithiodisilene: [(boryl)SiLi]₂ (2) was prepared in 73% yield by the reduction of (boryl)tribromosilane (1, boryl = (HCArN)₂B, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) with lithium in Et₂O. The salt elimination reaction of 2 with dihaloboranes RBX₂ afforded disilaborirenes [(boryl)Si]₂BR (3a–c), whereas the reaction with two equivalents of B-bromocatecholborane ((cat)BBr) yielded the first tetraboryldisilene [(boryl)(cat)BSi]₂ (4). X-ray diffraction analysis and density functional theory calculations indicated that the disilene 2 and tetraboryldisilene 4 feature an almost planar geometry and disilaborirenes 3a–c are aromatic with a silicon–boron hybrid 2π-electron delocalized structure. The results indicate that 1,2-dilithiodisilene 2 is a powerful synthetic reagent for the construction of novel silicon multiply bonded species with unique electronic structures and that the boryl substituents have significant electronic effects on the structure of silicon multiple bonding.

Dianionic disilyne: reduction of boryltribromosilane yielded the 1,2-dilithio-disilene 2, which is a powerful transfer reagent for the synthesis of a novel 2π aromatic system and the first tetraboryldisilene.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

(NHC)Si═C═N-R: A Two-Coordinated Si0-Isocyanide Compound as Si(NHC) Transfer Reagent

Experimental and theoretical studies are reported of the first two-coordinated Si⁰-isocyanide compound (SIDipp)Si═C═N-Ar^Mes (1: SIDipp (NHC) = C[N(Dipp)CH₂]₂, Ar^Mes = 2,6-dimesitylphenyl), supported by an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). A Si atom economic two-step synthesis of 1 involves a 2e reduction of the isocyanide-stabilized silyliumylidene salt [SiBr(CNAr^Mes)(SIDipp)][B(Ar^F)₄] (2[B(Ar^F)₄], Ar^F = B(C₆H₃-3,5-(CF₃)₂)₄) with KC₈. 2[B(Ar^F)₄] was obtained from SiBr₂(SIDipp) after bromide abstraction with an equimolar mixture of Na[B(Ar^F)₄] and Ar^MesNC. Exact adherence to the stoichiometry is crucial in the latter reaction, since 2[B(Ar^F)₄] reacts with SiBr₂(SIDipp) via isocyanide exchange to afford the disilicon(II) salt [Si₂Br₃(SIDipp)₂)][B(Ar^F)₄] (3[B(Ar^F)₄]), the reaction leading to an equilibrium that favors 3[B(Ar^F)₄] (K_eq(298 K) = 10.6, ΔH° = -10.6 kJ mol^-1; ΔS^° = -16.0 J mol^-1 K^-1). 3[B(Ar^F)₄] was obtained selectively from the 2:1 reaction of SiBr₂(SIDipp) with Na[B(Ar^F)₄] and fully characterized. Detailed studies of 1 reveal an intriguing structure featuring a planar C_NHC-Si-C-N skeleton with a V-shaped geometry at the dicoordinated Si⁰ center, a slightly bent Si═C═N core, a C_NHC-Si-C_CNR 3c-2e out of plane π-bond (HOMO), and an anticlinal conformation of the SIDipp and Ar^Mes substituents leading to axial chirality and the presence of two enantiomers, (R_a)-1 and (S_a)-1. Compound 1 displays structural dynamics in solution, rapidly interconverting the enantiomers. The silacumulene 1 is a potent Si(SIDipp) transfer agent as demonstrated by the synthesis and full characterization of the NHC-supported germasilyne (Z)-(SIDipp)(Cl)Si═GeAr^Mes (4) from 1 and Ge(Ar^Mes)Cl.

Transition Metal Complexes of Heavier Vinylidenes: Allylic Coordination vs Vinylidene-Alkyne Rearrangement at Nickel

Transition metal π-allyl complexes are key reagents/intermediates of various catalytic and stoichiometric allylation reactions. We now report the first transition metal complex of a heavier allylic π-system. The η³-Si₂Ge allyl nickel complex is formally obtained by the oxidative addition of the Si-Cl bond of the heavier vinylidene [R₂(Cl)Si-(R)Si═(NHC)Ge:] to [Ni(COD)₂] (R = 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl; NHC = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene; COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). Due to geometric constraints, the coordination to the Ni(II) center occurs through the formal Si═Ge double bond instead of the residual lone pair of electrons at germanium. In contrast, the Si-N bond of the analogous vinylidene [R₂(Me₂N)Si-(R)Si═(NHC)Ge:] (obtained by nucleophilic substitution of Cl by NMe₂) does not oxidatively add to Ni(0), and a hydridosilagermene-η²-nickel complex is obtained instead. The formation of this complex necessarily implies the isomerization of the heavier vinylidene to the corresponding heteroalkyne with the Si≡Ge triple bond in the coordination sphere of nickel followed by the activation of a C-H bond of one of the isopropyl groups of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand.

Phosphine-Stabilized Germasilenylidene: Source for a Silicon-Atom Transfer

A phosphine-stabilized germasilenylidene is synthesized following the pathway of SiCl₄ oxidative addition at a germylene-phosphine Lewis pair. Low-temperature reduction using {(^MesNacnac)Mg}₂ resulted in a chlorosilylene intermediate and finally a molecule exhibiting a Ge═Si: motif. Inside the chelating phosphine-germylene, a low-valent silicon atom is stabilized and was transferred to diazabutadiene to give N-heterocyclic silylenes. Because of the high reactivity of the phosphine-stabilized germasilenylidene, a reaction of two Ge═Si: units was found to yield a Si₂Ge₂-ring molecule exhibiting a germasilene substituted with a silylene.

New Types of Ge2 and Ge4 Assemblies Stabilized by a Carbanionic Dicarborandiyl-Silylene Ligand

The first Ge(0)-Ge(II) germylone-germylene-paired Ge₂ complex (LSi)₂Ge₂ (4) and the molecular Ge₄ cluster (LSi)₂Ge₄ (5) supported by the chelating carbanionic ortho-C,C'-dicarborandiyl-silylene ligand LSi [L = C,C'-C₂B₁₀H₁₀, Si = PhC(tBuN)₂Si] have been synthesized and isolated via reduction of the corresponding precursors chlorogermyl-germyliumylidene chloride (2), [(LSi)₂Ge(Cl)Ge]⁺Cl^-, and (LSi)₂Ge₄Cl₄ (3) with C₈K, respectively. The latter precursors were obtained from the unexpected outcome of the reaction of the ortho-C,C'-dicarborandiyl phosphine-silylene ligand PLSi (1) {P = P[N(tBu)CH₂]₂} and GeCl₂·dioxane. Compound 2 is formed in higher yields (65% yields) by the salt metathesis reaction of the C-lithium dicarborandiyl-C'-silylene salt LiLSi (6) [Li = Li(OEt₂)₂] with GeCl₂·dioxane. The molecular structures of all these species (1-6) have been established and confirmed spectroscopically and crystallographically. The electronic structures of 4 and 5 were elucidated by density functional theory calculations. While 4 possesses a localized dative Ge(0)→Ge(II) bond, the Ge-Ge σ bonds in 5 are delocalized in the Ge₄ cluster core. Featuring a donor-acceptor interaction between two chelating silylenes and the Ge₄ core, compound 5 represents a unique molecular model for a Ge₄ cluster.

Three-membered cyclic digermylenes stabilised by an N-heterocyclic carbene

Treatment of potassium salts of silole dianions with donor stabilised germanium dichlorides gave the anticipated silagermafulvenylidenes R₂Si = Ge(Do) (R₂Si = 1-silacyclopentadiendiyl, Do = N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)) only as transient intermediates in a side reaction. They were detected by NMR spectroscopy and, in one case, the formal dimer, 2,4-disila-1λ³,3λ³-digermetane, was isolated. The main products of these reactions are sila-bis-λ³-germiranes, i.e. directly interconnected digermylenes that are part of a three-membered ring. The structural data, supported by the results of density functional calculations confirm the digermylene nature of these products with a long inner cyclic Ge-Ge bond that decreases the inherent high ring strain in silagermiranes.

Perspective on Organoboron Chemistry

Organoboron compounds play prominent roles in structural, synthetic, and materials chemistry because boron atoms can feature electrophilic, ambiphilic, or nucleophilic character. This perspective briefly describes the most recent progress in organoboron chemistry, focusing on new boron molecules and their applications that have attracted great interest from main-group chemists. Boranyl-Functionalized [Ge9 ] Clusters: Providing the Idea of Intramolecular Ge/B Frustrated Lewis Pairs

The unique three-dimensional structure of spherical, homoatomic nine-atom germanium clusters opens various possibilities for the spatial arrangement of functional groups. Ligands comprising lone pairs have recently been introduced in the cluster sphere, and we now report the addition of a boranyl group to the cluster featuring a Ge-B exo-cluster bond. The reaction of the twofold-silylated cluster [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 ]2- (TMS=trimethylsilyl) with 2-chloro-1,3,2-diazaborolidines DABR -Cl leads to the first boranyl-functionalized [Ge9 ] clusters [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 DABR ]- (R=methyl (1 a), iso-propyl (2 a), ortho-tolyl (3 a)). The anions 2 a and 3 a were structurally characterized as [NHCDipp Cu]+ complexes (NHCDipp =1,3-di(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidine) through single crystal X-ray structure determination. Quantum-chemical calculations manifest the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) character of the boranyl-functionalized cluster [Ge9 {Si(TMS)3 }2 BCy2 ]- (4 a).

Directed Gas Phase Formation of the Elusive Silylgermylidyne Radical (H3 SiGe, X2 A'')

The previously unknown silylgermylidyne radical (H₃ SiGe; X² A'') was prepared via the bimolecular gas phase reaction of ground state silylidyne radicals (SiH; X² Π) with germane (GeH₄ ; X¹ A₁ ) under single collision conditions in crossed molecular beams experiments. This reaction begins with the formation of a van der Waals complex followed by insertion of silylidyne into a germanium-hydrogen bond forming the germylsilyl radical (H₃ GeSiH₂ ). A hydrogen migration isomerizes this intermediate to the silylgermyl radical (H₂ GeSiH₃ ), which undergoes a hydrogen shift to an exotic, hydrogen-bridged germylidynesilane intermediate (H₃ Si(μ-H)GeH); this species emits molecular hydrogen forming the silylgermylidyne radical (H₃ SiGe). Our study offers a remarkable glance at the complex reaction dynamics and inherent isomerization processes of the silicon-germanium system, which are quite distinct from those of the isovalent hydrocarbon system (ethyl radical; C₂ H₅ ) eventually affording detailed insights into an exotic chemistry and intriguing chemical bonding of silicon-germanium species at the microscopic level exploiting crossed molecular beams.

Synthesis of Low-Valent Dinuclear Group 14 Compounds with Element-Element Bonds by Transylidation

Dinuclear low-valent compounds of the heavy main group elements are rare species owing to their intrinsic reactivity. However, they represent desirable target molecules due to their unusual bonding situations as well as applications in bond activations and materials synthesis. The isolation of such compounds usually requires the use of substituents that provide sufficient stability and synthetic access. Herein, we report on the use of strongly donating ylide-substituents to access low-valent dinuclear group 14 compounds. The ylides not only impart steric and electronic stabilization, but also allow facile synthesis via transfer of an ylide from tetrylene precursors of type R Y2 E to ECl2 (E=Ge, Sn; R Y=TolSO2 (PR3 )C with R=Ph, Cy). This method allowed the isolation of dinuclear complexes amongst a germanium analogue of a vinyl cation, [(Ph Y)2 GeGe(Ph Y)]+ with an electronic structure best described as a germylene-stabilized GeII cation and a ylide(chloro)digermene [Cy Y(Cl)GeGe(Cl)Cy Y] with an unusually unsymmetrical structure.

Bonding Relationship between Silicon and Germanium with Group 13 and Heavier Elements of Groups 14-16

The topic of heavier main group compounds possessing multiple bonds is the subject of momentous interest in modern organometallic chemistry. Importantly, there is an excitement involving the discovery of unprecedented compounds with unique bonding modes. The research in this area is still expanding, particularly the reactivity aspects of these compounds. This article aims to describe the overall developments reported on the stable derivatives of silicon and germanium involved in multiple bond formation with other group 13, and heavier groups 14, 15, and 16 elements. The synthetic strategies, structural features, and their reactivity towards different nucleophiles, unsaturated organic substrates, and in small molecule activation are discussed. Further, their physical and chemical properties are described based on their spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

A sandwich-type cluster containing Ge@Pd3 planar fragment flanked by aromatic nonagermanide caps

Sandwich-type clusters with the planar fragment containing a heterometallic sheet have remained elusive. In this work, we introduce the [K(2,2,2-crypt)]4{(Ge9)2[η6-Ge(PdPPh3)3]} complex that contains a heterometallic sandwich fragment. The title compound is structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals the presence of an unusual heteroatomic metal planar fragment Ge@Pd3. The planar fragment contains a rare formal zerovalent germanium core and a peculiar bonding mode of sp2-Ge@(PdPPh3)3 trigonal planar structure, whereas the nonagermanide fragments act as capping ligands. The chemical bonding pattern of the planar fragment consists of three 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds attaching Pd atoms to the core Ge atom, while the binding between the planar fragment and the aromatic Ge9 ligands is provided by six 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds and two delocalized 4c-2e σ-bonds. The synthesized cluster represents a rare example of a sandwich compound with the heteroatomic metal planar fragment and inorganic aromatic capping ligands.

Cooperative N-H bond activation by amido-Ge(ii) cations

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and tertiary phosphine-stabilized germylium-ylidene cations, [R(L)Ge:]+, featuring tethered amido substituents at R have been synthesized via halide abstraction. Characterization in the solid state by X-ray crystallography shows these systems to be monomeric, featuring a two-coordinate C,N- or P,N-ligated germanium atom. The presence of the strongly Lewis acidic cationic germanium centre and proximal amide function allows for facile cleavage of N-H bonds in 1,2-fashion: the products resulting from reactions with carbazole feature a tethered secondary amine donor bound to a three-coordinate carbazolyl-GeII centre. In each case, addition of the components of the N-H bond occurs to the same face of the germanium amide function, consistent with a coordination/proton migration mechanism. Such as sequence is compatible with the idea that substrate coordination via the pπ orbital at germanium reduces the extent of N-to-Ge π donation from the amide, thereby enhancing the basicity of the proximal N-group.

Isolation of a 1-Magnesium-2,3-disilacyclopropene and a Related Bis(disilenide)

Herein we report the first synthesis of a 1-magnesium-2,3-disilacyclopropene and a related bis(disilenide). Reduction of (boryl)tribromosilane (1, boryl = (HCArN)₂B, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) with magnesium in THF afforded boryl-substituted magnesium complex [(boryl)Si]₂Mg(THF)₃ (2) in good yield, whereas reduction of (boryl)trichlorosilane (3) with KC₈ in THF led to the isolation of bridged alkoxy alkyl bis(disilenide) (THF)K(boryl)Si═Si(boryl)O(CH₂)₄(boryl)Si═Si(boryl)K(THF) (4) via ring opening of a THF molecule. X-ray diffraction analysis of 2 confirmed the presence of the novel Si₂Mg three-membered ring as well as the Si═Si double bond, which existed in a noticeably twisted B-Si-Si-B array. Complex 2 also represents the first reported example of a stable disilyne dianion.

Ge=B π-Bonding: Synthesis and Reversible [2+2] Cycloaddition of Germaborenes

Phosphine-stabilized germaborenes featuring an unprecedented Ge=B double bond with short B⋅⋅⋅Ge contacts of 1.886(2) (4) and 1.895(3) Å (5) were synthesized starting from an intramolecular germylene-phosphine Lewis pair (1). After oxidative addition of boron trihalides BX3 (X=Cl, Br), the addition products were reduced with magnesium and catalytic amounts of anthracene to give the borylene derivatives in yields of 78 % (4) and 57 % (5). These halide-substituted germaborenes were characterized by single-crystal structure analysis, and the electronic structures were studied by quantum-chemical calculations. According to an NBO NRT analysis, the dominating Lewis structure contains a Ge=B double bond. The germaborenes undergo a reversible, photochemically initiated [2+2] cycloaddition with the phenyl moiety of a terphenyl substituent at room temperature, forming a complex heterocyclic structure with GeIV in a strongly distorted coordination environment.

Linking Low-Coordinate Ge(II) Centers via Bridging Anionic N-Heterocyclic Olefin Ligands

We introduce a large-scale synthesis of a sterically encumbered N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) and illustrate the ability of its deprotonated form to act as an anionic four-electron bridging ligand. The resulting multicenter donating ability has been used to link two low oxidation state Ge(II) centers in close proximity, leading to bridging Ge-Cl-Ge and Ge-H-Ge bonding environments supported by Ge₂C₂ heterocyclic manifolds. Reduction of a dimeric [RGeCl]₂ species (R = anionic NHO, [(MeCNDipp)₂C═CH]^-; Dipp = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) did not give the expected acyclic RGeGeR analogue of an alkyne, but rather ligand migration/disproportionation transpired to yield the known diorganogermylene R₂Ge and Ge metal. This process was examined computationally, and the ability of the reported anionic NHO to undergo atom migration chemistry contrasts with what is typically found with bulky monoanionic ligands (such as terphenyl ligands).
