Synthesis and Lewis Acid Properties of Neutral Silver(III) Adducts Containing the AgIII(CF3)3 Moiety

The acetonitrile AgIII complex [AgIII(CF3)3(NCCH3)] (2) has been reported independently by Eujen and Naumann in the last century, albeit with intriguing NMR discrepancy. In their reports, 2 was claimed to be obtained starting from either [AgIII(CF3)3Cl]- (3⋅Cl) or [AgIII(CF3)4]- (1) via halide abstraction using AgNO3 or acidic treatment, resp. These two synthetic routes are herein reinvestigated. The feasibility of Naumann's method is demonstrated, thus providing 2 yet accompanied by its s-triazinyl derivative [AgIII(CF3)3(C6H9N3)] (2'). The formation of 2' is unprecedented and was thereby investigated. Both 2 and 2' were isolated in pure fashion and fully characterized. In turn, halide extraction from 3⋅Cl leads to the AgIII-ONO2 anion 5 instead of 2, as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy, EA and Sc-XRD.

Hybrid Heterocycles: Ag(I)-Catalyzed C-C/C-N/C-O Coupled Cascade Dual Cyclization to Valuable Indolo-4H-indolones and Indolo-4H-chromenes

Herein, we report a highly efficient Ag(I)-catalyzed indolyzation with Friedel-Crafts alkylation through a cascade cyclization strategy for accessing valuable hybrid heterocycles for the first time. This general strategy consists of forming four C-C/C-N/C-O bonds toward dual annulation reactions of 2-alkynylanilines with methyl benzoate-2-carboxaldehydes and aromatic amines, as well as with salicylaldehydes and malononitrile. Variably substituted new indolo-4H-phthalimidines and indolo-4H-chromenes were synthesized with excellent yields (85-93%) under mild reaction conditions.

Organoselenium Compounds: Chemistry and Applications in Organic Synthesis

Selenium, originally described as a toxin, turns out to be a crucial trace element for life that appears as selenocysteine and its dimer, selenocystine. From the point of view of drug developments, selenium-containing drugs are isosteres of sulfur and oxygen with the advantage that the presence of the selenium atom confers antioxidant properties and high lipophilicity, which would increase cell membrane permeation leading to better oral bioavailability. In this article, we have focused on the relevant features of the selenium atom, above all, the corresponding synthetic approaches to access a variety of organoselenium molecules along with the proposed reaction mechanisms. The preparation and biological properties of selenosugars, including selenoglycosides, selenonucleosides, selenopeptides, and other selenium-containing compounds will be treated. We have attempted to condense the most important aspects and interesting examples of the chemistry of selenium into a single article.

Cross-Coupling Reactions Enabled by Well-Defined Ag(III) Compounds: Main Focus on Aromatic Fluorination and Trifluoromethylation

AgIII compounds are considered strong oxidizers of difficult handling. Accordingly, the involvement of Ag catalysts in cross-coupling via 2e- redox sequences is frequently discarded. Nevertheless, organosilver(III) compounds have been authenticated using tetradentate macrocycles or perfluorinated groups as supporting ligands, and since 2014, first examples of cross-coupling enabled by AgI /AgIII redox cycles saw light. This review collects the most relevant contributions to this field, with main focus on aromatic fluorination/perfluoroalkylation and the identification of AgIII key intermediates. Pertinent comparison between the activity of AgIII RF compounds in aryl-F and aryl-CF3 couplings vs. the one shown by its CuIII RF and AuIII RF congeners is herein disclosed, thus providing a more profound picture on the scope of these transformations and the pathways commonly associated to C-RF bond formations enabled by coinage metals.

Ag(III)···Ag(III) Argentophilic Interaction in a Cofacial Corrole Dyad

Metallophilic interactions between closed-shell metal centers are exemplified by d¹⁰ ions, with Au(I) aurophilic interactions as the archetype. Such an interaction extends to d⁸ species, and examples involving Au(III) are prevalent. Conversely, Ag(III) argentophilic interactions are uncommon. Here, we identify argentophilic interactions in silver corroles, which are authentic Ag(III) species. The crystal structure of a monomeric silver corrole is a dimer in the solid state, and the macrocycle exhibits an atypical domed conformation. In order to evaluate whether this represents an authentic metallophilic interaction or a crystal-packing artifact, the analogous cofacial or "pacman" corrole was prepared. The conformation of the monomer was recapitulated in the silver pacman corrole, exhibiting a short 3.67 Å distance between metal centers and a significant compression of the xanthene backbone. Theoretical calculations support the presence of a rare Ag(III)···Ag(III) argentophilic interaction in the pacman complex.

Mechanism of the Aryl-F Bond-Forming Step from Bi(V) Fluorides

In this article, we describe a combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation of the C(sp2)-F bond formation from neutral and cationic high-valent organobismuth(V) fluorides, featuring a dianionic bis-aryl sulfoximine ligand. An exhaustive assessment of the substitution pattern in the ligand, the sulfoximine, and the reactive aryl on neutral triarylbismuth(V) difluorides revealed that formation of dimeric structures in solution promotes facile Ar-F bond formation. Noteworthy, theoretical modeling of reductive elimination from neutral bismuth(V) difluorides agrees with the experimentally determined kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the addition of external fluoride sources leads to inactive octahedral anionic Bi(V) trifluoride salts, which decelerate reductive elimination. On the other hand, a parallel analysis for cationic bismuthonium fluorides revealed the crucial role of tetrafluoroborate anion as fluoride source. Both experimental and theoretical analyses conclude that C-F bond formation occurs through a low-energy five-membered transition-state pathway, where the F anion is delivered to a C(sp2) center, from a BF4 anion, reminiscent of the Balz-Schiemann reaction. The knowledge gathered throughout the investigation permitted a rational assessment of the key parameters of several ligands, identifying the simple sulfone-based ligand family as an improved system for the stoichiometric and catalytic fluorination of arylboronic acid derivatives.

Silver-Catalyzed Controlled Intermolecular Cross-Coupling of Silyl Enol Ethers: Scalable Access to 1,4-Diketones

A protocol for silver-catalyzed controlled intermolecular cross-coupling of silyl enolates is disclosed. The protocol displays good functional group tolerance and allows efficient preparation of a series of synthetically useful 1,4-diketones. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest that the reaction proceeds through a one-electron process involving free radical species in which PhBr acts as the oxidant.

Origin of the different reactivity of the high-valent coinage-metal complexes [RCuiii Me3 ]- and [RAgiii Me3 ]- (R=allyl)

High-valent tetraalkylcuprates(iii) and -argentates(iii) are key intermediates of copper- and silver-mediated C-C coupling reactions. Here, we investigate the previously reported contrasting reactivity of [RMiii Me3 ]- complexes (M=Cu, Ag and R=allyl) with energy-dependent collision-induced dissociation experiments, advanced quantum-chemical calculations and kinetic computations. The gas-phase fragmentation experiments confirmed the preferred formation of the [RCuMe]- anion upon collisional activation of the cuprate(iii) species, consistent with a homo-coupling reaction, whereas the silver analogue primarily yielded [AgMe2 ]- , consistent with a cross-coupling reaction. For both complexes, density functional theory calculations identified one mechanism for homo coupling and four different ones for cross coupling. Of these pathways, an unprecedented concerted outer-sphere cross coupling is of particular interest, because it can explain the formation of [AgMe2 ]- from the argentate(iii) species. Remarkably, the different C-C coupling propensities of the two [RMiii Me3 ]- complexes become only apparent when properly accounting for the multi-configurational character of the wave function for the key transition state of [RAgMe3 ]- . Backed by the obtained detailed mechanistic insight for the gas-phase reactions, we propose that the previously observed cross-coupling reaction of the silver complex in solution proceeds via the outer-sphere mechanism.

Cross-Coupling through Ag(I)/Ag(III) Redox Manifold

In ample variety of transformations, the presence of silver as an additive or co-catalyst is believed to be innocuous for the efficiency of the operating metal catalyst. Even though Ag additives are required often as coupling partners, oxidants or halide scavengers, its role as a catalytically competent species is widely neglected in cross-coupling reactions. Most likely, this is due to the erroneously assumed incapacity of Ag to undergo 2e^- redox steps. Definite proof is herein provided for the required elementary steps to accomplish the oxidative trifluoromethylation of arenes through Ag^I /Ag^III redox catalysis (i. e. CEL coupling), namely: i) easy Ag^I /Ag^III 2e^- oxidation mediated by air; ii) bpy/phen ligation to Ag^III ; iii) boron-to-Ag^III aryl transfer; and iv) ulterior reductive elimination of benzotrifluorides from an [aryl-Ag^III -CF₃ ] fragment. More precisely, an ultimate entry and full characterization of organosilver(III) compounds [K]⁺ [Ag^III (CF₃ )₄ ]^- (K-1), [(bpy)Ag^III (CF₃ )₃ ] (2) and [(phen)Ag^III (CF₃ )₃ ] (3), is described. The utility of 3 in cross-coupling has been showcased unambiguously, and a large variety of arylboron compounds was trifluoromethylated via [Ag^III (aryl)(CF₃ )₃ ]^- intermediates. This work breaks with old stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the inability of Ag to undergo cross-coupling by itself.

Stability of AgIII towards Halides in Organosilver(III) Complexes

The involvement of silver in two-electron AgI /AgIII processes is currently emerging. However, the range of stability of the required and uncommon AgIII species is virtually unknown. Here, the stability of AgIII towards the whole set of halide ligands in the organosilver(III) complex frame [(CF3 )3 AgX]- (X=F, Cl, Br, I, At) is theoretically analyzed. The results obtained depend on a single factor: the nature of X. Even the softest and least electronegative halides (I and At) are found to form reasonably stable AgIII -X bonds. Our estimates were confirmed by experiment. The whole series of nonradiative halide complexes [PPh4 ][(CF3 )3 AgX] (X=F, Cl, Br, I) has been experimentally prepared and all its constituents have been isolated in pure form. The pseudohalides [PPh4 ][(CF3 )3 AgCN] and [PPh4 ][(CF3 )3 Ag(N3 )] have also been isolated, the latter being the first silver(III) azido complex. Except for the iodo compound, all the crystal and molecular structures have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The decomposition paths of the [(CF3 )3 AgX]- entities at the unimolecular level have been examined in the gas phase by multistage mass spectrometry (MSn ). The experimental detection of the two series of mixed complexes [CF3 AgX]- and [FAgX]- arising from the corresponding parent species [(CF3 )3 AgX]- demonstrate that the Ag-X bond is particularly robust. Our experimental observations are rationalized with the aid of theoretical methods. Smooth variation with the electronegativity of X is also observed in the thermolyses of bulk samples. The thermal stability in the solid state gradually decreases from X=F (145 °C, dec.) to X=I (78 °C, dec.) The experimentally established compatibility of AgIII with the heaviest halides is of particular relevance to silver-mediated or silver-catalyzed processes.

Well-Defined Aryl-FeII Complexes in Cross-Coupling and C–H Activation Processes

Herein we explore the intrinsic organometallic reactivity of iron embedded in a tetradentate N₃C macrocyclic ligand scaffold that allows the stabilization of aryl-Fe species, which are key intermediates in Fe-catalyzed cross-coupling and C–H functionalization processes. This study covers C–H activation reactions using ^MeL_H and FeCl₂, biaryl C–C coupling product formation through reaction with Grignard reagents, and cross-coupling reactions using ^MeL_Br or ^HL_Br in combination with Fe⁰(CO)₅. Synthesis under light irradiation and moderate heating (50 °C) affords the aryl-Fe^II complexes [Fe^II(Br)(^MeL)(CO)] (1^Me) and [Fe^II(^HL)(CO)₂]Br (1^H). Exhaustive spectroscopic characterization of these rare low-spin diamagnetic species, including their crystal structures, allowed the investigation of their intrinsic reactivity.

Evaluation of the effect of silver and silver nanoparticles on the function of selenoproteins using an in-vitro model of the fish intestine: The cell line RTgutGC

Emerging research in mammalian cells suggests that ionic (AgNO₃) and nano silver (AgNP) can disrupt the metabolism of selenium which plays a vital role in oxidative stress control. However, the effect of silver (Ag) on selenoprotein function in fish is poorly understood. Here we evaluate the effects of AgNO₃ and citrate coated AgNP (cit-AgNP) on selenoprotein function and oxidative stress using a fish cell line derived from the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestine (RTgutGC). Cell viability was evaluated using a cytotoxicity assay which measures simultaneously metabolic activity, membrane integrity and lysosome integrity. Cells exposed to equimolar amounts of AgNO₃ and cit-AgNP accumulated the same amount of silver intracellularly, however AgNO₃ was more toxic than cit-AgNP. Selenoenzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) mRNA levels and enzyme activity were measured. While mRNA levels remained unaffected by AgNO₃ or cit-AgNP, the enzyme activity of GPx was inhibited by AgNO₃ (1 µM) and cit-AgNP (5 µM) and TrxR activity was inhibited by AgNO₃ (0.4 µM) and cit-AgNP (1, 5 µM). Moreover, cells exposed to 1 µM of AgNO₃ and cit-AgNP showed an increase in metallothionein b (MTb) mRNA levels at 24 h of exposure, confirming the uptake of silver, but returned to control levels at 72 h suggesting silver scavenging by MTb. Oxidative stress was not observed at any of the doses of AgNO₃ or cit-AgNP tested. Overall, this study shows that AgNO₃ or cit-AgNP can inhibit the activity of selenoenzymes but do not induce oxidative stress in RTgutGC cells.

Transition metal-catalyzed synthesis of spirooxindoles

Spirooxindole is a principal bioactive agent and is observed in several natural products including alkaloids. They are broadly studied in the pharmaceutical field and have a significant role in the evolution of drugs such as anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-microbial etc. In organic chemistry, an indispensable role is presented by transition metal catalysts. An effective synthetic perspective to spirooxindoles is the use of transition metals as the catalyst. This review discusses the synthesis of spirooxindoles catalyzed by transition metals and covers literature up to 2020.

Aryl-Fluoride Bond-Forming Reductive Elimination from Nickel(IV) Centers

The treatment of pyridine- and pyrazole-ligated Ni^II σ-aryl complexes with Selectfluor results in C(sp²)-F bond formation under mild conditions. With appropriate design of supporting ligands, diamagnetic Ni^IV σ-aryl fluoride intermediates can be detected spectroscopically and/or isolated during these transformations. These studies demonstrate for the first time that Ni^IV σ-aryl fluoride complexes participate in challenging C(sp²)-F bond-forming reductive elimination to yield aryl fluoride products.

Mechanistic insights into the SN2-type reactivity of aryl-Co(iii) masked-carbenes for C-C bond forming transformations

Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of a family of C-metalated aryl-Co(iii) enolates, which can be considered as masked-carbenes, using diazoacetates as coupling partners. These species have been proved to be necessary intermediates in the C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond forming event to obtain cyclic amides, taming the elusive Co(iii)-carbene species. The scope of diazoacetates has been exhaustively examined, varying the nature of the ester and the α-substitution, and a clear preference for electron-poor carbene precursors is observed. Exhaustive experimental and theoretical studies indicate that an unprecedented intramolecular SN2-type process governs the formation of the newly formed C-C bond. Furthermore, the key role of several Lewis acids as carboxylate-activating reagents is further explored by DFT calculations.

Argentate(i) and (iii) complexes as intermediates in silver-mediated cross-coupling reactions

Despite the potential of silver to mediate synthetically valuable cross-coupling reactions, the operating mechanisms have remained unknown. Here, we use a combination of rapid-injection NMR spectroscopy, electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations to demonstrate that these transformations involve argentate(i) and (iii) complexes as key intermediates.

Metal-Mediated Halogen Exchange in Aryl and Vinyl Halides: A Review

Halogenated arenes and alkenes are of prime importance in many areas of science, especially in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and chemical industries. While the simplest ones are commercially available, some of them are still hardly accessible depending on their substitution patterns and the nature of the halogen atom. Reactions enabling the selective and efficient replacement of the halogen atom of an aryl or alkenyl halide by another one, lighter, or heavier, are therefore of major importance since they can be used for example to turn a less reactive aryl/alkenyl chloride into the more reactive iodinated derivatives or, in a reversed sense, to block an undesired reactivity, for late-stage modifications or for the introduction of a radionuclide. If some halogen exchange reactions are possible with activated substrates, they usually require catalysis with metal complexes. Remarkably efficient processes have been developed for metal-mediated halogen exchange in aryl and vinyl halides: they are overviewed, in a comprehensive manner, in this review article.

Transition-Metal-Free Decarboxylative Iodination: New Routes for Decarboxylative Oxidative Cross-Couplings

Constructing products of high synthetic value from inexpensive and abundant starting materials is of great importance. Aryl iodides are essential building blocks for the synthesis of functional molecules, and efficient methods for their synthesis from chemical feedstocks are highly sought after. Here we report a low-cost decarboxylative iodination that occurs simply from readily available benzoic acids and I₂. The reaction is scalable and the scope and robustness of the reaction is thoroughly examined. Mechanistic studies suggest that this reaction does not proceed via a radical mechanism, which is in contrast to classical Hunsdiecker-type decarboxylative halogenations. In addition, DFT studies allow comparisons to be made between our procedure and current transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylations. The utility of this procedure is demonstrated in its application to oxidative cross-couplings of aromatics via decarboxylative/C–H or double decarboxylative activations that use I₂ as the terminal oxidant. This strategy allows the preparation of biaryls previously inaccessible via decarboxylative methods and holds other advantages over existing decarboxylative oxidative couplings, as stoichiometric transition metals are avoided.

Nucleophiles compatible with Au-catalyzed cross couplings include aromatic and aliphatic alcohols and amines, as well as water and amides.
