Abstract
Fruit traits mediate animal-plant interactions and have to a large degree evolved to match the sensory capacities and morphology of their respective dispersers. At the same time, fruit traits are affected by local environmental factors, which may affect frugivore-plant trait match. Temperature has been identified as a major factor with a strong effect on the development of fruits, which is of serious concern because of the rising threat of global warming. Nonetheless, this primarily originates from studies on domesticated cultivars in often controlled environments. Little is known on the effect of rising temperatures on fruit traits of wild species and the implications this could have to seed dispersal networks, including downstream consequences to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In a case study of five plant species from eastern Madagascar, we addressed this using the elevation-for-temperature approach and examined whether a temperature gradient is systematically associated with variation in fruit traits relevant for animal foraging and fruit selection. We sampled across a gradient representing a temperature gradient of 1.5-2.6 °C, corresponding to IPCC projections. The results showed that in most cases there was no significant effect of temperature on the traits evaluated, although some species showed different effects, particularly fruit chemical profiles. This suggests that in these species warming within this range alone is not likely to drive substantial changes in dispersal networks. While no systemic effects were found, the results also indicate that the effect of temperature on fruit traits differs across species and may lead to mismatches in specific animal-plant interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Geographical factors affect the nutritional, therapeutic and commercial values of fruits. Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp) is a popular fruit in Asia and a potential functional food with diverse pharmacological attributes. Although it is produced in various localities, the information related to the altitudinal variation of dragon fruit nutrients and active compounds is scarce. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the variations in metabolite profiles of H. polyrhizus (variety Jindu1) fruit pulps from three different altitudes of China, including Wangmo (WM, 650 m), Luodian (LD, 420 m), and Zhenning (ZN, 356 m). Jindu1 is the main cultivated pitaya variety in Guizhou province, China. RESULTS The LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy)-based widely targeted metabolic profiling identified 645 metabolites, of which flavonoids (22.64%), lipids (13.80%), phenolic acids (12.40%), amino acids and derivatives (10.39%), alkaloids (8.84%), and organic acids (8.37%) were dominant. Multivariate analyses unveiled that the metabolite profiles of the fruit differed regarding the altitude. Fruits from WM (highest altitude) were prime in quality, with higher levels of flavonoids, alkaloids, nucleotides and derivatives, amino acids and derivatives, and vitamins. Fruits from LD and ZN had the highest relative content of phenolic acids and terpenoids, respectively. We identified 69 significantly differentially accumulated metabolites across the pulps of the fruits from the three locations. KEGG analysis revealed that flavone and flavonol biosynthesis and isoflavonoid biosynthesis were the most differentially regulated. It was noteworthy that most active flavonoid compounds exhibited an increasing accumulation pattern along with the increase in altitude. Vitexin and isovitexin were the major differentially accumulated flavonoids. Furthermore, we identified two potential metabolic biomarkers (vitexin and kaempferol 3-O-[2-O-β-D-galactose-6-O-a-L-rhamnose]-β-D-glucoside) to discriminate between dragon fruits from different geographical origins. CONCLUSION Our findings provide insights into metabolic changes in dragon fruits grown at different altitudes. Furthermore, they show that growing pitaya at high altitudes can produce fruit with higher levels of bioactive compounds, particularly flavonoids.

Abstract
Global climate change exerts a significant impact on sustainable horticultural crop production and quality. Rising Global temperatures have compelled the agricultural community to adjust planting and harvesting schedules, often necessitating earlier crop cultivation. Notably, climate change introduces a suite of ominous factors, such as greenhouse gas emissions (CGHs), including elevated temperature, increased carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) ozone depletion (O3), and deforestation, all of which intensify environmental stresses on crops. Consequently, climate change stands poised to adversely affect crop yields and livestock production. Therefore, the primary objective of the review article is to furnish a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted factors influencing horticulture production, encompassing fruits, vegetables, and plantation crops with a particular emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions and environmental stressors such as high temperature, drought, salinity, and emission of CO2. Additionally, this review will explore the implementation of novel horticultural crop varieties and greenhouse technology that can contribute to mitigating the adverse impact of climate change on agricultural crops.

Abstract
The elevated anthocyanin content of colored potatoes produces numerous health benefits in humans. However, there is a paucity of studies exploring the influence of environmental factors on anthocyanin components in colored potatoes. In our work, the Box-Behnken design was adopted to optimize anthocyanin extraction from colored potato tubers with ultrasound assistance. The response surface model was stable and reliable (R2 = 0.9775), and under optimal extraction conditions, namely an ultrasonic power of 299 W, an extraction time of 10 min, and a solid-liquid ratio of 1:30 (g/mL), the yield reached 4.33 mg/g. Furthermore, the anthocyanins of colored potato tubers grown at different altitudes were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction, the results showed that anthocyanin levels were the highest at high altitudes, whereas anthocyanins were almost undetectable at mid-altitude. Moreover, the types of anthocyanin compounds present in colored potatoes varied at different altitudes. The red clones exhibited substantial accumulation of pelargonidin across all three altitudes. In contrast, the main anthocyanins found in purple clones were malvidin, petunidin, and cyanidin. We identified the anthocyanin components with a strong correlation to the environment, thereby establishing a fundamental basis for the breeding of potato clones with high anthocyanin content.

Abstract
Not least because it is adaptable to a variety of geographies and climates, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is grown across much of the world. Pigmented potato tubers have been found to contain large quantities of flavonoids, which have various functional roles and act as antioxidants in the human diet. However, the effect of altitude on the biosynthesis and accumulation of flavonoids in potato tubers is poorly characterized. Here we carried out an integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic study in order to evaluate how cultivation at low (800 m), moderate (1800 m), and high (3600 m) altitude affects flavonoid biosynthesis in pigmented potato tubers. Both red and purple potato tubers grown at a high altitude contained the highest flavonoid content, and the most highly pigmented flesh, followed by those grown at a low altitude. Co-expression network analysis revealed three modules containing genes which were positively correlated with altitude-responsive flavonoid accumulation. The anthocyanin repressors StMYBATV and StMYB3 exhibited a significant positive relationship with altitude-responsive flavonoid accumulation. The repressive function of StMYB3 was further verified in tobacco flowers and potato tubers. The results presented here add to the growing body of knowledge regarding the response of flavonoid biosynthesis to environmental conditions, and should aid in efforts to develop novel varieties of pigmented potatoes for use across different geographies.

Abstract
Ginkgo biloba (ginkgo) leaves have medicinal value due to their high levels of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids. We found that the flavonoid content in ginkgo leaves increases significantly at high altitudes (Qinghai-Tibet Plateau). Considering that high UV-B radiation is among the key environmental characteristics of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we carried out simulated UV-B treatments on ginkgo seedlings and found that the flavonoid content of the leaves increased significantly following the treatments. Combined with results from our previous studies, we determined that the transcription factor GbHY5 may play a key role in responses to UV-B radiation. Overexpression of GbHY5 significantly promoted the accumulation of flavonoids in both ginkgo callus and Arabidopsis thaliana. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid and real-time quantitative PCR showed that GbHY5 promoted the expression of GbMYB1 by interacting with GbMYB1 protein. Overexpression of GbMYB1 in ginkgo callus and A. thaliana also significantly promoted flavonoid biosynthesis. GbFLS encodes a key enzyme in flavonoid biosynthesis, and its promoter has binding elements of GbHY5 and GbMYB1. A dual-luciferase reporter assay indicated that while GbHY5 and GbMYB1 activated the expression of GbFLS individually, their co-expression achieved greater activation. Our analyses reveal the molecular mechanisms by which the UV-B-induced GbHY5-GbMYB1-GbFLS module promotes flavonoid biosynthesis in ginkgo, and they provide insight into the use of UV-B radiation to enhance the flavonoid content of ginkgo leaves.

Internal Quality Attributes and Sensory Characteristics of 'Ambrosia' Apples with Different Dry Matter Content after a Two-Week and a Ten-Week Air Storage at 1 °C. Foods 2023; 12:foods12010219. Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the compositional and textural characteristics and sensory profile of 'Ambrosia' apples with different dry matter content (DMC) as estimated using a Felix-750 Produce Quality Meter (Felix Instruments Inc., Camas, WA, USA). Fruits were harvested from a commercial orchard in Cawston and an experimental field in Summerland Research and Development Centre (SuRDC) in British Columbia, Canada, when the average absorbance difference index/coefficient of fruit skin δAbsorbance (δA) dropped under 0.45 ± 0.10. DMC levels were estimated after harvest at the blush/background transition zone for fruit categorization on 300 fruits from each location. Fruits were coded with an individual number and grouped in different DMC categories. The distribution of the estimated DMC levels obtained from two locations was different. The results indicate that DMC levels were strongly and positively correlated with the soluble solids content (SSC) of the fruit (r = 0.81). Sensory evaluations also demonstrated that apples in the lowest DMC category (12.5% ± 0.5 from Cawston) were considered the least sweet apples with the least overall flavour quality by panellists compared to the apples from the other DMC categories included in the sensory evaluations from the two locations. Panellists also perceived less-than-expected "fresh apple" and "tropical" flavours but more-than-expected "no flavour" and "bland" off flavour from the lowest-DMC-category apples. The non-destructive DMC measurements show a potential to be used to sort apples for SSC, sweetness and flavour; nevertheless, they were not related to firmness or textural attributes.

Abstract
Plants are natural experts in organic synthesis, being able to generate large numbers of specific metabolites with widely varying structures that help them adapt to variable survival challenges. Metabolomics is a research discipline that integrates the capabilities of several types of research including analytical chemistry, statistics, and biochemistry. Its ongoing development provides strategies for gaining a systematic understanding of quantitative changes in the levels of metabolites. Metabolomics is usually performed by targeting either a specific cell, a specific tissue, or the entire organism. Considerable advances in science and technology over the last three decades have propelled us into the era of multi-omics, in which metabolomics, despite at an earlier developmental stage than genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, offers the distinct advantage of studying the cellular entities that have the greatest influence on end phenotype. Here, we summarize the state of the art of metabolite detection and identification, and illustrate these techniques with four case study applications: (i) comparing metabolite composition within and between species, (ii) assessing spatio-temporal metabolic changes during plant development, (iii) mining characteristic metabolites of plants in different ecological environments and upon exposure to various stresses, and (iv) assessing the performance of metabolomics as a means of functional gene identification , metabolic pathway elucidation, and metabolomics-assisted breeding through analyzing plant populations with diverse genetic variations. In addition, we highlight the prominent contributions of joint analyses of plant metabolomics and other omics datasets, including those from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, phenomics, microbiomes, and ion-omics studies. Finally, we discuss future directions and challenges exploiting metabolomics-centered approaches in understanding plant metabolic diversity.

Abstract
Altitude-associated nutrition-compositional evaluation is critical for quality control and value determination of plants. Herein, an exploratory study was applied to investigate the differences in the metabolites of Cyclocarya paliurus (CP) leaves from different altitudes (200-1000 m) using a UPLC-QTOF-MS-based metabolomics method, employed to create models for discrimination of CP leaves. On the one hand, 70 metabolites exhibiting significant distinctions within various components in different altitude environments were detected and identified, of which majority showed a close connection. High altitude environments with a decrease in temperature accompanied by enhanced UV-B radiation significantly influenced the profile of flavonoids and organic acids. On the other hand, the PLS-DA model (R2 = 0.994 and Q2 = 0.990) with the VIP variable selection method and P-value were selected to characterize fifteen potential differential metabolites. Moreover, the DD-SIMCA model involving the above-mentioned differential compounds showed both good specificity and accuracy of 100%. These results provide guidance for the discrimination of CP leaves from different geographic altitudes, which may be extended to improve the growing conditions of CP leaves.

Abstract
The consumption of fruit and vegetables play an important role in human nutrition, dietary diversity and health. Fruit and vegetable industries impart significant impact on our society, economy, and environment, contributing towards sustainable development in both developing and developed countries. The eating quality of fruit is determined by its appearance, color, firmness, flavor, nutritional components, and the absence of defects from physiological disorders. However, all of these components are affected by many pre- and postharvest factors that influence fruit ripening and senescence. Significant efforts have been made to maintain and improve fruit eating quality by expanding our knowledge of fruit ripening and senescence, as well as by controlling and reducing losses. Innovative approaches are required to gain better understanding of the management of eating quality. With completion of the genome sequence for many horticultural products in recent years and development of the proteomic research technique, quantitative proteomic research on fruit is changing rapidly and represents a complementary research platform to address how genetics and environment influence the quality attributes of various produce. Quantiative proteomic research on fruit is advancing from protein abundance and protein quantitation to gene-protein interactions and post-translational modifications of proteins that occur during fruit development, ripening and in response to environmental influences. All of these techniques help to provide a comprehensive understanding of eating quality. This review focuses on current developments in the field as well as limitations and challenges, both in broad term and with specific examples. These examples include our own research experience in applying quantitative proteomic techniques to identify and quantify the protein changes in association with fruit ripening, quality and development of disorders, as well as possible control mechanisms.

Abstract
Apple bud sports offer a rich resource for clonal selection of numerous elite cultivars. The accumulation of somatic mutations as plants develop may potentially impact the emergence of bud sports. Previous studies focused on somatic mutation in the essential genes associated with bud sports. However, the rate and function of genome-wide somatic mutations that accumulate when a bud sport arises remain unclear. In this study, we identified a branch from a 10-year-old tree of the apple cultivar 'Oregon Spur II' as a bud sport. The mutant branch showed reduced red coloration on fruit skin. Using this plant material, we assembled a high-quality haplotype reference genome consisting of 649.61 Mb sequences with a contig N50 value of 2.04 Mb. We then estimated the somatic mutation rate of the apple tree to be 4.56 × 10 -8 per base per year, and further identified 253 somatic single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including five non-synonymous SNPs, between the original type and mutant samples. Transcriptome analyses showed that 69 differentially expressed genes between the original type and mutant fruit skin were highly correlated with anthocyanin content. DNA methylation in the promoter of five anthocyanin-associated genes was increased in the mutant compared with the original type as determined using DNA methylation profiling. Among the genetic and epigenetic factors that directly and indirectly influence anthocyanin content in the mutant apple fruit skin, the hypermethylated promoter of MdMYB10 is important. This study indicated that numerous somatic mutations accumulated at the emergence of a bud sport from a genome-wide perspective, some of which contribute to the low coloration of the bud sport.

Abstract
Red coloration in apples, an important quality trait, is primarily attributed to the accumulation of anthocyanins. Centuries of breeding have produced a wide variety of apples with different levels of anthocyanins in response to genetic and environmental stimuli. The Huashuo apple shows a much darker red color than its sister line, Huarui. Thirteen different anthocyanins were detected in Huashuo and Huarui apples, of which ten were significantly more abundant in Huashuo apples, confirming that the color difference is indeed attributed to high anthocyanins accumulation rather than the types of anthocyanins. In particular, the contents of cyanidin 3-O-galactoside levels were highest among anthocyanins in both cultivars, reaching >5000 μg·g−1 at the last color transition stage in Huashuo apples, while only >3000 μg·g−1 in Huarui apples. Moreover, the expression of most structural genes, especially DFR, CHI, and 4CL associated with anthocyanin synthesis, were higher in Huashuo apples than in Huarui apples. Combined transcriptomics, metabolomics, and qRT-PCR analysis revealed that six transcription factors from the MYB and bZIP transcription factor families likely play key roles in the dark coloring of Huashuo apples. These results provide deeper insights into apple coloring and suggest a series of candidate genes for breeding anthocyanin-rich cultivars.

Abstract
Apple is characterized by its high adaptation to diverse growing environments. However, little is still known about how different environments can regulate at the metabolic or molecular level specific apple quality traits such as the yellow fruit peel color. In this study, changes in carotenoids and chlorophylls, antioxidants as well as differences in the transcriptome were investigated by comparing the peel of "Golden Reinders" apples grown at different valley and mountain orchards. Mountain environment favored the development of yellow color, which was not caused by an enhanced accumulation of carotenoids but rather by a decrease in the chlorophyll content. The yellow phenotype was also associated to higher expression of genes related to chloroplast functions and oxidative stress. Time-course analysis over the last stages of apple development and ripening, in fruit from both locations, further revealed that the environment differentially modulated isoprenoids and phenylpropanoid metabolism and pointed out a key role for H2O2 in triggering apple peel degreening. Overall, the results presented herein provide new insights into how different environmental conditions regulate pigment and antioxidant metabolism in apple leading to noticeable differences in the apple peel color.

Abstract
Auxin is an important hormone playing crucial roles during fruit growth and ripening; however, the metabolic impact of changes in auxin signalling during tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) ripening remains unclear. Here, we investigated the significance of changes in auxin signalling during different stages of fruit development by analysing changes in tomato fruit quality and primary metabolism using mutants with either lower or higher auxin sensitivity [diageotropica (dgt) and entire mutants, respectively]. Altered auxin sensitivity modifies metabolism, through direct impacts on fruit respiration and fruit growth. We verified that the dgt mutant plants exhibit reductions in fruit set, total fruit dry weight, fruit size, number of seeds per fruit, and fresh weight loss during post-harvest. Sugar accumulation was associated with delayed fruit ripening in dgt, probably connected with reduced ethylene levels and respiration, coupled with a lower rate of starch degradation. In contrast, despite exhibiting parthenocarpy, increased auxin perception (entire) did not alter fruit ripening, leading to only minor changes in primary metabolism. By performing a comprehensive analysis, our results connect auxin signalling and metabolic changes during tomato fruit development, indicating that reduced auxin signalling led to extensive changes in sugar concentration and starch metabolism during tomato fruit ripening.

Abstract
Fruit is constantly challenged by wounding events, inducing accelerated ripening and irreversible metabolic changes. However, cognate mechanisms that regulate this process are little known. To expand our knowledge of ripening metabolism induced by wounding, an artificial-wound global transcriptome investigation combined with metabolite profiling study was conducted in postharvest kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa (A. Chev.) A. Chev. 'Hayward'). Wounding treatment promoted fruit ripening, as demonstrated by changes in fruit firmness, ethylene production and respiration activity determined periodically during a ripening period of 8 d at room temperature. Calcium imaging using fluorescent probe Fluo-3 AM revealed spatial dynamics of Ca2+ signaling in the wounding area following 8d ripening. Several sugars including fructose, glucose, and sucrose as well as organic acids such as citric, succinic and galacturonic acid were increased by wounding. Changes of various amino acids in wounded-treated fruit, especially 5-oxoproline and valine along with alternations of soluble alcohols, like myo-inositol were detected. Gene expression analysis of the wounded fruit showed increased expression of genes that are mainly involved in defense response (e.g., AdTLP.1-3, AdPP2C.1-2, AdMALD1), calcium ion binding (e.g., AdCbEFh, AdCLR, AdANX), TCA cycle (e.g., AdMDH.1, AdMDH.2, AdCS), sugars (e.g., AdSUSA.1, AdSPS4, AdABFr), secondary metabolism (e.g., AdPAL.1-3, AdCCR, AdHCT.1-2), lipid processing (e.g., AdGELP.1-4, AdGELP) and pectin degradation (e.g., AdPE.1-2, AdPAE.1-2, AdPG.1-2) as well as in ethylene (AdERF7, AdERF1B, AdACO.1-4) and auxin (AdICE, AdAEFc, AdASII) synthesis and perception. Moreover, genes related to aquaporins, such as AdAQP2, AdAQP4 and AdAQP7 were down-regulated in fruit exposed to wounding. These results demonstrate multiple metabolic points of wounding regulatory control during kiwifruit ripening and provide insights into the molecular basis of wounding-mediated ripening.

Analysis of Apple Fruit (Malus × domestica Borkh.) Quality Attributes Obtained from Organic and Integrated Production Systems. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare total phenolic content (TPC), radical-scavenging activity (RSA), total anthocyanin content (TAC), sugar and polyphenolic profiles of two apple cultivars (‘Discovery’ and ‘Red Aroma Orelind’) from organic and integrated production systems in climatic conditions of Western Norway. Sixteen sugars and four sugar alcohols and 19 polyphenols were found in the peel, but less polyphenols were detected in the pulp. The peel of both apples and in both production systems had significantly higher TPC and RSA than the pulp. The peel from integrated apples had higher TPC than the peel from organic apples, while organic apples had higher TAC than the integrated. Sucrose and glucose levels were higher in organic apples; fructose was cultivar dependent while minor sugars were higher in integrated fruits. The most abundant polyphenolic compound in the peel of the tested cultivars was quercetin 3-O-galactoside, while chlorogenic acid was most abundant in the pulp. Regarding polyphenols, phloretin, phloridzin, protocatechuic acid, baicalein and naringenin were higher in organic apple, while quercetin 3-O-galactoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, chlorogenic acid and syringic acid was higher in integrated fruits. In conclusion, organic ‘Discovery’ and integrated ‘Red Aroma Orelind’ had higher bioavailability of health related compounds from the peel and the pulp.

In this study, we analyzed the diversity of flavonoids and the patterns of flavonoid metabolic gene expression under light irradiation with or without methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment in immature (S1) and color-turning (S2) staged ‘Fuji’ apples. Further, we assessed the metabolic regulation at the gene level between anthocyanin and flavonol in light-responsive apple skins. UV-B exposure within 3 days was found to significantly stimulate anthocyanin accumulation in apple skin compared to other light exposure. S1 skin was more sensitive to UV-B and MeJA treatment, in the aspect of indaein accumulation. The enhancement of apple pigmentation following treatment with adequate levels of UV-B and MeJA was maximized at approximately 72 h. Red (range from 4.25 to 17.96 µg·g−1 DW), blue (range from 4.59 to 9.17 µg·g−1 DW) and UV-A (range from 3.98 to 19.12 µg·g−1 DW) lights contributed to the induction of idaein content. Most genes related to the flavonoid pathways increased their expression under UV-B exposure, including the gene expression of the transcription factor, MdMYB10, a well-known upstream factor of flavonoid biosynthesis in apples. The boosted upregulation of MdMYB10, MdCHS, MdF3H MdLDOX, and MdUFGT genes due to MeJA in UV-B was found and may contribute the increase of idaein. UV-A and UV-B caused higher quercetin glycoside content in both S1 and S2 apple skins than longer wavelengths, resulting in significant increases in quercetin-3-O-galactoside and quercetin-3-O-glucoside. These results suggest that the application of adequate UV-B with MeJA in less-pigmented postharvest apples will improve apple color quality within a short period.

Abstract
Soluble sugars, malic acid, and ascorbic acid in 17 apple cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh.) and three wild forms (M. pumila 'Saiwaihong', M. prunifolia (Willd.) Borkh. and M. micromalus Makino) from three major apple cultivation regions in China were quantified using gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Fructose was the most abundant sugar, followed by sucrose, glucose, and sorbitol. Wild apples contain more sorbitol and less sucrose and were significantly more acidic than cultivated fruits. The total sugar content varied from 110 to 160 mg/g fresh fruits, total acid content from 2 to 6 mg/g, with a strong influence of genetic background and growth location. Overall, 'Gala', 'Xiali', 'Liuyuehong', 'Lihong', 'Starking Delicious', and 'Starkrimson' were characterized by higher sugar/acid ratio indicating sweeter taste compared to other cultivars. The wild apples had the highest content of ascorbic acid (0.6-0.96 mg/g). Compared to other cultivars, 'Zhongqiuwang', 'Qinguan', and 'Nagafu No. 2' were richer in ascorbic acid. The ascorbic acid content in the commercial cultivars was highly dependent on growth location. The content of malic acid and sucrose positively correlated to altitude, and that of glucose negatively. Malic acid positively correlated with ascorbic acid and sucrose, glucose content with ascorbic acid.

Abstract
Papaya is a fleshy fruit that undergoes fast ethylene-induced modifications. The fruit becomes edible, but the fast pulp softening is the main factor that limits the post-harvest period. Papaya fast pulp softening occurs due to cell wall disassembling coordinated by ethylene triggering that massively expresses pectinases. In this work, RNA-seq analysis of ethylene-treated and non-treated papayas enabled a wide transcriptome overview that indicated the role of ethylene during ripening at the gene expression level. Several families of transcription factors (AP2/ERF, NAC, and MADS-box) were differentially expressed. ACO, ACS, and SAM-Mtase genes were upregulated, indicating a high rate of ethylene biosynthesis after ethylene treatment. The correlation among gene expression and physiological data demonstrated ethylene treatment can indeed simulate ripening, and regulation of changes in fruit color, aroma, and flavor could be attributed to the coordinated expression of several related genes. Especially about pulp firmness, the identification of 157 expressed genes related to cell wall metabolism demonstrated that pulp softening is accomplished by a coordinated action of several different cell wall-related enzymes. The mechanism is different from other commercially important fruits, such as strawberry, tomato, kiwifruit, and apple. The observed behavior of this new transcriptomic data confirms ethylene triggering is the main event that elicits fast pulp softening in papayas.

Abstract
The benefits of silicon against abiotic stress in different annual plant species have been described in many studies, however the regulation of ripening of fruit tree crops by silicon remains largely uncharacterized. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the impact of foliar silicon application in the apple (cv. 'Fuji') fruit ripening traits along with the effect of silicon in the nutrient and metabolic changes in the fully expanded leaves, annual shoots, fruit outer pericarp (peel) and fruit mesocarp (skin) tissues. Data indicated that fruit firmness and apple peel color attributes, such as redness (a*) and percentage of red-blushed surface were induced by silicon application. Moreover, several fruit ripening traits, such as titratable acidity, soluble solid content and respiration rate were unaffected by silicon. Endogenous silicon level in leaves shoots and peel tissues were increased by exogenously applied silicon while several elements (i.e., P, Mg, Mn, Fe and Cu) were altered in the tested tissues that exposed to silicon. In addition, silicon increased the accumulation of total phenolic and total anthocyanin compounds in the various apple tissues. The level of various primary metabolites including sorbitol, fructose, maltose cellobiose, malic acid, phosphoric acid and gluconic acid was also notably affected by silicon in a tissue-specific manner. Overall, this study provides a valuable resource for future research, aiming in the elucidation of the role of silicon in fruit tree physiology.

Abstract
Producing high-quality table grapes is becoming a challenge in the warmer area of the world due to the global increase in temperature, which negatively affects anthocyanin biosynthesis and other fruit quality attributes. Nanotechnology is a growing field that can be a very useful tool to improve crop productivity and sustainability. The red color is one of the major fruit quality parameters that determine table grape marketability. This study aimed to investigate the role of the zinc element in improving the marketable characteristics of Crimson seedless (Vitis vinifera L.) table grape berries i.e., color, firmness, total soluble solids and sugars; besides its role in activating PAL and SOD enzymatic systems. Additionally, this paper investigated the additive advantages of zinc when applied in nanometric form. Five concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles, ZnO NPs (0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm), were compared to zinc oxide in mineral form at a concentration of 250 ppm to investigate their effects on the marketable characteristics of Crimson seedless grape cultivar. The treatments were applied as foliar spray on three-year-old Crimson seedless vines grafted on Richter 110 rootstock grown in one of the major table grape production area in Egypt. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized block design and each vine was sprayed with five letters of the solution. The use of the lowest concentration (25 ppm) of ZnO NPs achieved the highest significant enzyme activity (PAL and SOD). Moreover, the T.S.S, sugars and anthocyanin content in berries increased significantly in association of decreasing acidity. On the other hand, the use of a 50 ppm concentration led to an increase in fruit firmness. Collectively, our data showed that 25 ppm of zinc nanoparticles improved PAL and SOD enzymes activity, improved red coloration in table grape and was more effective than the 250 ppm zinc oxide mineral form.

Abstract
Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is common in Chinese apple production. High N reduced the contents of soluble sugar and total flavonoids by 16.05 and 19.01%, respectively, resulting in poor fruit quality. Moreover, high N increased the total N and decreased the total C and C/N ratio of apple fruits. On the basis of the transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses, the global network was revealed. High N inhibited the accumulation of carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, and trehalose) and flavonoids (rhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside, rutin, and trihydroxyisoflavone-7-O-galactoside) in fruits, and more C skeletons were used to synthesize amino acids and their derivatives (especially low C/N ratio, e.g., arginine) to be transferred to N metabolism. This study revealed new insights into the decline in soluble sugar and flavonoids caused by high N, and hub genes (MD07G1172700, MD05G1222800, MD16G1227200, MD01G1174400, and MD02G1207200) and hub proteins (PFK, gapN, and HK) were obtained.

AbstractPhenolic compounds in apples 17 cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh.) and 3 wild forms (Malus sp.) were analyzed to study the impact of genetic background, growth site, and fruit bagging. The impact of altitude was studied in nine cultivars by analyzing fruits collected from orchards at three altitudes. Procyanidin B2 (71–628 μg/g fresh weight), ( −)-epicatechin (35–357 μg/g), and chlorogenic acid (28–563 μg/g) were always the three most abundant phenolic compounds in the apple samples studied, except for the cultivar ‘Qinguan’, which had a very low content of ( −)-epicatechin (13 μg/g) and procyanidin B2 (8 μg/g). The wild apples of M. prunifolia (Willd.) Borkh were 5-times richer in epicatechin (278 μg/g) and procyanidin B2 (628 μg/g) than the commercial cultivars of M. domestica Borkh (86 and 54, respectively). Among the commercial cultivars, ‘Qinguan’ had the highest level of chlorogenic acid but the lowest content of flavan-3-ols, whereas ‘Liuyuehong’ was characterized by the highest content of quercetin glycosides. Procyanidin B2, and ( −)-epicatechin correlated negatively, while other phenolics positively, with altitude. The response of phenolic compounds to altitude variation depended on latitude variation and genetic backgrounds. Bagging treatment reduced the contents of most phenolic compounds, with the impact of cultivars and length of re-exposure before harvest. This is also the first report on phenolic compounds in several important new cultivars, adding new knowledge on the compositional characteristics of global apple resources.
