Aqueous Graphene Dispersion and Biofunctionalization via Enzymatic Oxidation of Tripeptides

Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene-aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π-stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non-covalent support via π-π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.

Biofabrication methods for reconstructing extracellular matrix mimetics

In the human body, almost all cells interact with extracellular matrices (ECMs), which have tissue and organ-specific compositions and architectures. These ECMs not only function as cellular scaffolds, providing structural support, but also play a crucial role in dynamically regulating various cellular functions. This comprehensive review delves into the examination of biofabrication strategies used to develop bioactive materials that accurately mimic one or more biophysical and biochemical properties of ECMs. We discuss the potential integration of these ECM-mimics into a range of physiological and pathological in vitro models, enhancing our understanding of cellular behavior and tissue organization. Lastly, we propose future research directions for ECM-mimics in the context of tissue engineering and organ-on-a-chip applications, offering potential advancements in therapeutic approaches and improved patient outcomes.

Peptide-Protein Coassemblies into Hierarchical and Bioactive Tubular Membranes

Multicomponent self-assembly offers opportunities for the design of complex and functional biomaterials with tunable properties. Here, we demonstrate how minor modifications in the molecular structures of peptide amphiphiles (PAs) and elastin-like recombinamers (ELs) can be used to generate coassembling tubular membranes with distinct structures, properties, and bioactivity. First, by introducing minor modifications in the charge density of PA molecules (PAK2, PAK3, PAK4), different diffusion-reaction processes can be triggered, resulting in distinct membrane microstructures. Second, by combining different types of these PAs prior to their coassembly with ELs, further modifications can be achieved, tuning the structures and properties of the tubular membranes. Finally, by introducing the cell adhesive peptide RGDS in either the PA or EL molecules, it is possible to harness the different diffusion-reaction processes to generate tubular membranes with distinct bioactivities. The study demonstrates the possibility to trigger and achieve minor but crucial differences in coassembling processes and tune material structure and bioactivity. Lifelike Transformative Materials for Biohybrid Implants: Inspired by Nature, Driven by Technology

Today's living world is enriched with a myriad of natural biological designs, shaped by billions of years of evolution. Unraveling the construction rules of living organisms offers the potential to create new materials and systems for biomedicine. From the close examination of living organisms, several concepts emerge: hierarchy, pattern repetition, adaptation, and irreducible complexity. All these aspects must be tackled to develop transformative materials with lifelike behavior. This perspective article highlights recent progress in the development of transformative biohybrid systems for applications in the fields of tissue regeneration and biomedicine. Advances in computational simulations and data-driven predictions are also discussed. These tools enable the virtual high-throughput screening of implant design and performance before committing to fabrication, thus reducing the development time and cost of biomimetic and biohybrid constructs. The ongoing progress of imaging methods also constitutes an essential part of this matter in order to validate the computation models and enable longitudinal monitoring. Finally, the current challenges of lifelike biohybrid materials, including reproducibility, ethical considerations, and translation, are discussed. Advances in the development of lifelike materials will open new biomedical horizons, where perhaps what is currently envisioned as science fiction will become a science-driven reality in the future.

Interfacial Polyelectrolyte Complexation-Inspired Bioprinting of Vascular Constructs

Bioprinting is a precise layer-by-layer manufacturing technology utilizing biomaterials, cells, and sometimes growth factors for the fabrication of customized three-dimensional (3D) biological constructs. In recent years, it has gained considerable interest in various biomedical studies. However, the translational application of bioprinting is currently impeded by the lack in efficient techniques for blood vessel fabrications. In this report, by systematically studying the previously reported phenomenon, interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation, an efficient blood vessel bioprinting technique based on the phenomenon, was proposed and subsequently investigated. In this technique, anionic hyaluronate and cationic lysine-based peptide amphiphiles were placed concentrically to bioprint with human umbilical endothelial cells for the fabrication of biological tubular constructs. These constructs demonstrated clear vascular features, which made them highly resemble blood vessels. In addition, to optimize the bioactivity of the printed constructs, this report also, for the first time, studied peptide sequencing's effect on the biocompatibility of the polyelectrolyte-peptide amphiphile complex. All these studies conducted in the report are highly relevant and interesting for research in vascular structure fabrication, which will eventually be beneficial for translational application development of bioprinting.

Sequence Control of the Self-Assembly of Elastin-Like Polypeptides into Hydrogels with Bespoke Viscoelastic and Structural Properties

The biofabrication of structural proteins with controllable properties via amino acid sequence design is interesting for biomedicine and biotechnology, yet a complete framework that connects amino acid sequence to material properties is unavailable, despite great progress to establish design rules for synthesizing peptides and proteins with specific conformations (e.g., unfolded, helical, β-sheets, or β-turns) and intermolecular interactions (e.g., amphipathic peptides or hydrophobic domains). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can help in developing such a framework, but the lack of a standardized way of interpreting the outcome of these simulations hinders their predictive value for the design of de novo structural proteins. To address this, we developed a model that unambiguously classifies a library of de novo elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) with varying numbers and locations of hydrophobic/hydrophilic and physical/chemical-cross-linking blocks according to their thermoresponsiveness at physiological temperature. Our approach does not require long simulation times or advanced sampling methods. Instead, we apply (un)supervised data analysis methods to a data set of molecular properties from relatively short MD simulations (150 ns). We also experimentally investigate hydrogels of those ELPs from the library predicted to be thermoresponsive, revealing several handles to tune their mechanical and structural properties: chain hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity or block distribution control the viscoelasticity and thermoresponsiveness, whereas ELP concentration defines the network permeability. Our findings provide an avenue to accelerate the design of de novo ELPs with bespoke phase behavior and material properties.

All-Aqueous Freeform Fabrication of Perfusable Self-Standing Soft Compartments

Compartmentalized structures obtained in all-aqueous settings have shown promising properties as cell encapsulation devices, as well as reactors for trans-membrane chemical reactions. While most approaches focus on the preparation of spherical devices, advances on the production of complex architectures have been enabled by the interfacial stability conferred by emulsion systems, namely mild aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS), or non-equilibrated analogues. However, the application of non-spherical structures has mostly been reported while keeping the fabricated materials at a stable interface, limiting the free-standing character, mobility and transposition of the obtained structures to different setups. Here, the fabrication of self-standing, malleable and perfusable tubular systems through all-aqueous interfacial assembly is shown, culminating in the preparation of independent objects with stability and homogeneity after disruption of the polymer-based aqueous separating system. Those hollow structures can be fabricated with a variety of widths, and rapidly printed as long structures at flow rates of 15 mm s^-1 . The materials are used as compartments for cell culture, showcasing high cytocompatibility, and can be tailored to promote cell adhesion. Such structures may find application in fields that benefit from freeform tubular structures, including the biomedical field with, for example, cell encapsulation, and benchtop preparation of microfluidic devices.

Pearl-inspired graphene oxide-collagen microgel with multi-layer mineralization through microarray chips for bone defect repair

Biomineralization of natural polymers in simulated body fluid (SBF) can significantly improve its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and osteoinductivity because of the hydroxyapatite (HAp) deposition. Nevertheless, the superficial HAp crystal deposition hamper the deep inorganic ions exchange in porous microgels, thus gradually leading to a nonuniform regeneration effect. Inspired by the pearl forming process, this article uses the microarray chips to fabricate the multi-layer mineralized graphene oxide (GO)-collagen (Col)-hydroxyapatite (HAp) microgel, denoted as MMGCH. These fabricated MMGCH microgels exhibit porous structure and uniform HAp distribution. Furthermore, the suitable microenvironment offered by microgel promotes the time-dependent proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of stem cells, which resulted in upregulated osteogenesis-related genes and proteins, such as alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and collagen-1. Finally, the MMGCH microgels possess favorable bone regeneration capacities both in cranial bone defects and mandibular bone defects via providing a suitable microenvironment for host-derived cells to form new bone tissues. This work presents a biomimetic means aiming to achieve full-thickness and uniform HAp deposition in hydrogel for bone defect repair.

Graphene Oxide and Biomolecules for the Production of Functional 3D Graphene-Based Materials

Graphene and its derivatives have been widely employed in the manufacturing of novel composite nanomaterials which find applications across the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering and medicine. There are many techniques and strategies employed for the production, functionalization, and assembly of graphene with other organic and inorganic components. These are characterized by advantages and disadvantages related to the nature of the specific components involved. Among many, biomolecules and biopolymers have been extensively studied and employed during the last decade as building blocks, leading to the realization of graphene-based biomaterials owning unique properties and functionalities. In particular, biomolecules like nucleic acids, proteins and enzymes, as well as viruses, are of particular interest due to their natural ability to self-assemble via non-covalent interactions forming extremely complex and dynamic functional structures. The capability of proteins and nucleic acids to bind specific targets with very high selectivity or the ability of enzymes to catalyse specific reactions, make these biomolecules the perfect candidates to be combined with graphenes, and in particular graphene oxide, to create novel 3D nanostructured functional biomaterials. Furthermore, besides the ease of interaction between graphene oxide and biomolecules, the latter can be produced in bulk, favouring the scalability of the resulting nanostructured composite materials. Moreover, due to the presence of biological components, graphene oxide-based biomaterials are more environmentally friendly and can be manufactured more sustainably compared to other graphene-based materials assembled with synthetic and inorganic components. This review aims to provide an overview of the state of the art of 3D graphene-based materials assembled using graphene oxide and biomolecules, for the fabrication of novel functional and scalable materials and devices.

Reversible photodissipation of composite photochromic azobenzene-alginate supramolecular hydrogels

Supramolecular smart materials can quickly elicit macroscopic changes upon external stimulation. Here we report that an azobenzene-containing cyclic dipeptide can form composite supramolecular hydrogels with alginate based on the charge complementarity, at lower loading than the critical gelation concentrations of either component. The gels can reversibly dissipate to fluids with UV light. They can also encapsulate and photorelease fluorescent cargo. Upon treatment of the gels with aqueous calcium salts, the alginate component is permanently cross-linked and the photochromic component is solubilized.

Disordered Protein Stabilization by Co-Assembly of Short Peptides Enables Formation of Robust Membranes

Molecular self-assembly is a spontaneous natural process resulting in highly ordered nano to microarchitectures. We report temperature-independent formation of robust stable membranes obtained by the spontaneous interaction of intrinsically disordered elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) with short aromatic peptides at temperatures both below and above the conformational transition temperature of the ELPs. The membranes are stable over time and display durability over a wide range of parameters including temperature, pH, and ultrasound energy. The morphology and composition of the membranes were analyzed using microscopy. These robust structures support preosteoblast cell adhesion and proliferation as well as pH-dependent cargo release. Simple noncovalent interactions with short aromatic peptides can overcome conformational restrictions due to the phase transition to facilitate the formation of complex bioactive scaffolds that are stable over a wide range of environmental parameters. This approach offers novel possibilities for controlling the conformational restriction of intrinsically disordered proteins and using them in the design of new materials.

Mechanically robust hybrid hydrogels of photo-crosslinkable gelatin and laminin-mimetic peptide amphiphiles for neural induction

Self-assembling bio-instructive materials that can provide a biomimetic tissue microenvironment with the capability to regulate cellular behaviors represent an attractive platform in regenerative medicine. Herein, we develop a hybrid neuro-instructive hydrogel that combines the properties of a photo-crosslinkable gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and self-assembling peptide amphiphiles (PAs) bearing a laminin-derived neuro-inductive epitope (PA-GSR). Electrostatic interaction and ultraviolet light crosslinking mechanisms were combined to create dual-crosslinked hybrid hydrogels with tunable stiffness. Spectroscopic, microscopic and theoretical techniques show that the cationic PA-GSR(+) electrostatically co-assembles with the negatively charged GelMA to create weak hydrogels with hierarchically ordered microstructures, which were further photo-crosslinked to create mechanically robust hydrogels. Dynamic oscillatory rheology and micromechanical testing show that photo-crosslinking of the co-assembled GelMA and PA-GSR(+) hydrogel results in robust hydrogels displaying improved stiffness. Gene expression analysis was used to show that GelMA/PA-GSR(+) hydrogels can induce human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) into neural-lineage cells and supports neural-lineage specification of neuroblast-like cells (SH-SY5Y) in a growth-factor-free manner. Also, metabolomics analysis suggests that the hydrogel alters the metabolite profiles in the cells by affecting multiple molecular pathways. This work highlights a new approach for the design of PA-based hybrid hydrogels with robust mechanical properties and biological functionalities for nerve tissue regeneration.

Graphene and its derivatives: understanding the main chemical and medicinal chemistry roles for biomedical applications

Over the past few years, there has been a growing potential use of graphene and its derivatives in several biomedical areas, such as drug delivery systems, biosensors, and imaging systems, especially for having excellent optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Therefore, nanomaterials in the graphene family have shown promising results in several areas of science. The different physicochemical properties of graphene and its derivatives guide its biocompatibility and toxicity. Hence, further studies to explain the interactions of these nanomaterials with biological systems are fundamental. This review has shown the applicability of the graphene family in several biomedical modalities, with particular attention for cancer therapy and diagnosis, as a potent theranostic. This ability is derivative from the considerable number of forms that the graphene family can assume. The graphene-based materials biodistribution profile, clearance, toxicity, and cytotoxicity, interacting with biological systems, are discussed here, focusing on its synthesis methodology, physicochemical properties, and production quality. Despite the growing increase in the bioavailability and toxicity studies of graphene and its derivatives, there is still much to be unveiled to develop safe and effective formulations.

Biosynthesis and physico-chemical characterization of high performing peptide hydrogels@graphene oxide composites

Hydrogels based on short peptide molecules are interesting biomaterials with wide present and prospective use in biotechnologies. A well-known possible drawback of these materials can be their limited mechanical performance. In order to overcome this problem, we prepared Fmoc-Phe₃self-assembling peptides by a biocatalytic approach, and we reinforced the hydrogel with graphene oxide nanosheets. The formulation here proposed confers to the hydrogel additional physicochemical properties without hampering peptide self-assembly. We investigated in depth the effect of nanocarbon morphology on hydrogel properties (i.e. morphology, viscoelastic properties, stiffness, resistance to an applied stress). In view of further developments towards possible clinical applications, we have preliminarily tested the biocompatibility of the composites. Our results showed that the innovative hydrogel composite formulation based on FmocPhe3 and GO is a biomaterial with improved mechanical properties that appears suitable for the development of biotechnological applications.

Structure-Property Relationships of Elastin-like Polypeptides: A Review of Experimental and Computational Studies

Elastin is a structural protein with outstanding mechanical properties (e.g., elasticity and resilience) and biologically relevant functions (e.g., triggering responses like cell adhesion or chemotaxis). It is formed from its precursor tropoelastin, a 60-72 kDa water-soluble and temperature-responsive protein that coacervates at physiological temperature, undergoing a phenomenon termed lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Inspired by this behavior, many scientists and engineers are developing recombinantly produced elastin-inspired biopolymers, usually termed elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs). These ELPs are generally comprised of repetitive motifs with the sequence VPGXG, which corresponds to repeats of a small part of the tropoelastin sequence, X being any amino acid except proline. ELPs display LCST and mechanical properties similar to tropoelastin, which renders them promising candidates for the development of elastic and stimuli-responsive protein-based materials. Unveiling the structure-property relationships of ELPs can aid in the development of these materials by establishing the connections between the ELP amino acid sequence and the macroscopic properties of the materials. Here we present a review of the structure-property relationships of ELPs and ELP-based materials, with a focus on LCST and mechanical properties and how experimental and computational studies have aided in their understanding.

Design of a Waste Paper-Derived Chemically 'Reactive' and Durable Functional Material with Tailorable Mechanical Property Following an Ambient and Sustainable Chemical Approach

Controlled tailoring of mechanical property and wettability is important for designing various functional materials. The integration of these characteristics with waste materials is immensely challenging to achieve, however, it can provide sustainable solutions to combat relevant environmental pollutions and other relevant challenges. Here, the strategic conversion of discarded and valueless waste paper into functional products has been introduced following a catalyst-free chemical approach to tailor both the mechanical property and water wettability at ambient conditions for sustainable waste management and controlling the relevant environmental pollution. In the current design, the controlled and appropriate silanization of waste paper allowed to modulate both the a) porosity and b) compressive modulus of the paper-derived sponges. Further, the association of 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between amine and acrylate groups allowed to obtain an unconventional waste paper-derived chemically 'reactive' sponge. The appropriate covalent modification of the residual reactive acrylate groups with selected alkylamines at ambient conditions provided a facile basis to tailor the water wettability from moderate hydrophobicity, adhesive superhydrophobicity to non-adhesive superhydrophobicity. The embedded superhydrophobicity in the waste paper-derived sponge was capable of sustaining large physical deformations, severe physical abrasions, prolonged exposure to harsh aqueous conditions, etc. Further, the waste paper-derived, extremely water-repellent sponges and membranes were successfully extended for proof-of-concept demonstration of a practically relevant outdoor application, where the repetitive remediation of oil spillages has been demonstrated following both selective absorption (25 times) of oils and gravity-driven filtration-based (50 times) separation of oils from oil/water mixtures at different harsh aqueous scenarios.

Improved adenylate cyclase activity via affinity immobilization onto co-modified GO with bio-inspired adhesive and PEI

Adenylate cyclase (AC) can efficiently catalyze the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic adenosine-3', 5'-monophosphate (cAMP). However, AC directly immobilized on substrate is not desirable due to enzyme inactivation. Herein, bio-inspired adhesive of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) was used as flexible chains to graft on graphene oxide (GO), and the AC was directionally immobilized through affinity between metal ions and his-tags of AC. The properties of modified GO and the activity of immobilized AC were studied in detail. PDA/PEI layers have been proved to improve the amino density of GO surface for affinity groups decoration and adjust the interaction between AC and support. And modified GO by this novel method contributes to subsequent grafting and immobilization of AC by affinity. AC immobilized on modified GO exhibited high activity recovery with about 90 % of free AC, while enzyme immobilized on unmodified GO has been inactivated. This study offers a versatile approach for support modification and enzyme oriented immobilization. PDA/PEI functionalized GO can be used as a promising carrier to immobilize other his-tagged enzymes.

An interfacial self-assembling bioink for the manufacturing of capillary-like structures with tuneable and anisotropic permeability

Self-assembling bioinks offer the possibility to biofabricate with molecular precision, hierarchical control, and biofunctionality. For this to become a reality with widespread impact, it is essential to engineer these ink systems ensuring reproducibility and providing suitable standardization. We have reported a self-assembling bioink based on disorder-to-order transitions of an elastin-like recombinamer (ELR) to co-assemble with graphene oxide (GO). Here, we establish reproducible processes, optimize printing parameters for its use as a bioink, describe new advantages that the self-assembling bioink can provide, and demonstrate how to fabricate novel structures with physiological relevance. We fabricate capillary-like structures with resolutions down to ∼10µm in diameter and ∼2µm thick tube walls and use both experimental and finite element analysis to characterize the printing conditions, underlying interfacial diffusion-reaction mechanism of assembly, printing fidelity, and material porosity and permeability. We demonstrate the capacity to modulate the pore size and tune the permeability of the resulting structures with and without human umbilical vascular endothelial cells. Finally, the potential of the ELR-GO bioink to enable supramolecular fabrication of biomimetic structures was demonstrated by printing tubes exhibiting walls with progressively different structure and permeability.

Folding and self-assembly of short intrinsically disordered peptides and protein regions

Proteins and peptide fragments are highly relevant building blocks in self-assembly for nanostructures with plenty of applications. Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and protein regions (IDRs) are defined by the absence of a well-defined secondary structure, yet IDPs/IDRs show a significant biological activity. Experimental techniques and computational modelling procedures for the characterization of IDPs/IDRs are discussed. Directed self-assembly of IDPs/IDRs allows reaching a large variety of nanostructures. Hybrid materials based on the derivatives of IDPs/IDRs show a promising performance as alternative biocides and nanodrugs. Cell mimicking, in vivo compartmentalization, and bone regeneration are demonstrated for IDPs/IDRs in biotechnological applications. The exciting possibilities of IDPs/IDRs in nanotechnology with relevant biological applications are shown.

Strategies for re-vascularization and promotion of angiogenesis in trauma and disease

The maintenance of a healthy vascular system is essential to ensure the proper function of all organs of the human body. While macrovessels have the main role of blood transportation from the heart to all tissues, microvessels, in particular capillaries, are responsible for maintaining tissues' functionality by providing oxygen, nutrients and waste exchanges. Occlusion of blood vessels due to atherosclerotic plaque accumulation remains the leading cause of mortality across the world. Autologous vein and artery grafts bypassing are the current gold standard surgical procedures to substitute primarily obstructed vascular structures. Ischemic scenarios that condition blood supply in downstream tissues may arise from blockage phenomena, as well as from other disease or events leading to trauma. The (i) great demand for new vascular substitutes, arising from both the limited availability of healthy autologous vessels, as well as the shortcomings associated with small-diameter synthetic vascular grafts, and (ii) the challenging induction of the formation of adequate and stable microvasculature are current driving forces for the growing interest in the development of bioinspired strategies to ensure the proper function of vasculature in all its dimensional scales. Here, a critical review of well-established technologies and recent biotechnological advances to substitute or regenerate the vascular system is provided.

Controlled Production of Elastin-like Recombinamer Polymer-Based Membranes at a Liquid-Liquid Interface by Click Chemistry

Diffusion of organic and inorganic molecules controls most industrial and biological processes that occur in a liquid phase. Although significant efforts have been devoted to the design and operation of large-scale purification systems, diffusion devices with adjustable biochemical characteristics have remained difficult to achieve. In this regard, micrometer-scale, bioinspired membranes with tunable diffusion properties have been engineered by covalent cross-linking of two elastin-like recombinamers (ELRs) at a liquid-liquid interface. The covalent approach selected provides the desired ELR-based membranes with structural support, and modulation of the concentration of the polypeptides employed confers direct control of the thickness, pore size, and diffusive properties over a broad range of molecular weights (4-150 kDa). The recombinant and versatile nature of the proteinaceous building blocks employed further paves the way to engineering bioactive motifs within the membrane scaffold, thereby widening their applicability in the biological field.

State of the art: synthesis and characterization of functionalized graphene nanomaterials

Nanomaterials play nowadays a preponderant role in the field of materials science due to the wide range of applications and synergy with other fields of knowledge. Recently, carbonaceous nanomaterials, most notably bi-dimensional graphene (2D graphene), have been highlighted by their application in several areas: electronics, chemistry, medicine, energy and the environment. The search for new materials has led many researchers to develop new routes of synthesis and the expansion of the current means of production, by the anchoring of other nanomaterials on graphene surface, or by modifications of its hexagon sp2 structure, through the doping of heteroatoms. By adding functional groups to the graphene surface, it is possible to increase its affinity with other materials, such as polymers, magnetic nanoparticles and clays, leading to the formation of new nanocomposites. Several covalent and non-covalent functionalization processes, their advantages and disadvantages with respect to their interactions with other chemical species, are discussed in this review. The characterization of these materials is a sensitive topic, since the insertion of functional groups over the graphene basal plane causes changes in its morphology and the so-called chemistry of surface. In this sense, beyond the classical techniques, such as x-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), modern characterization techniques of graphene-based nanomaterials are discussed, focusing on those more indicated according to the proposed modifications. A significant attention was driven to environmental applications of functionalized graphenes, specifically in the removal of pollutants from wastewaters.

Quantitative Effects of Disorder on Chemically Modified Amorphous Carbon Electrodes

Real materials are disordered. This disorder influences the properties of these materials and the chemical processes that occur at their interfaces. Gaining a molecular-level understanding of the underlying physical manifestations caused by disordered materials is crucial to unraveling and ultimately controlling the efficiency and performance of these materials in a range of energy-related devices. This understanding necessitates measurement techniques through which disorder can be detected, quantified, and monitored. However, such quantitative measurements are notoriously difficult, as effects often average out in ensemble measurements. In this work, we describe how a combination of electrochemical and spatially resolved surface spectroscopy measurements illuminate a molecular-level picture of disorder in materials. Using amorphous carbon as an intrinsically disordered material, we covalently attached a monolayer of ferrocene. Interfacial electron transfer across the amorphous carbon-ferrocene interface is highly sensitive to disruptions of order. By systematically varying linker properties and surface loadings, the influence of lateral interactions between nonuniformly distributed ferrocene headgroups on ensemble electrochemical measurements is demonstrated. Electrochemical and imaging data collectively indicate that conformational flexibility of the ferrocene moieties provides a mechanism to elude repulsive and unbalanced lateral interactions, while rigid linkages provide direct information about the underlying disorder of the material. This study is the first of its kind to quantify and visualize molecular disorder and heterogeneity with an experimental model accessed through ensemble measurements.
