Ultrasonic activation of inert poly(tetrafluoroethylene) enables piezocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species

Unraveling the pyridinic nitrogen vacancy in carbon nitride for photo-self Fenton-like purification of organic contaminants

This work reports a carbon nitride with pyridinic nitrogen-vacancy (N2CV-CN), which purifies organic contaminants via an in-situ photo-self Fenton-like reaction. Experiments and calculations demonstrated that the nitrogen-vacancy induces lone-paired (LP) and symmetry-unpaired electrons, promoting the formation of low-energy LP-π hybridized orbitals and helping to overcome the pairing energy required for oxygen to accept electrons. Furthermore, the nitrogen-vacancy accelerates film and intra-particle diffusion rates of organic contaminants on N2CV-CN, creating beneficial conditions for reactive oxide species to mineralize organic contaminants. Under sunlight and atmospheric oxygen, a photo-self Fenton-like reaction involving proton-coupled electron transfer occurred on the surface of N2CV-CN. Furthermore, by integrating photocatalysis with flocculation, about 99.1 % suspended substance, 45.5 % chemical oxygen demand, and 38.4 % biological oxygen demand were reduced from polluted river-water. Constructing N2CV-CN and understanding its crucial role offer theoretical and methodological insights into the in-situ purification of contaminated water bodies.

Low-frequency ultrasound assisted contact-electro-catalysis for efficient inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa

Frequent cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious threat to the aquatic ecosystem and human health, so developing an efficient algae removal method is a long-term goal for bloom management. Current technologies for algal bloom control need urgent improvement in terms of algicide recovery, eco-friendliness and cost. Here we propose a contact-electro-catalytic method, using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film as a reusable catalyst. This contact-electro-catalytic approach involves the generation of reactive oxygen species (e.g., O2•-, HO•, 1O2 and H2O2) through water-PTFE contact electrification under the low-frequency ultrasonic waves, facilitating the inactivation of algae. The removal rate of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) exposured to the water-PTFE contact-electro-catalytic system is almost five times greater than that of ultrasound alone after 5 h. A mechanistic investigation revealed that the contact-electro-catalytic system damaged the photosynthetic activity, antioxidant system and membrane integrity of the cells. Additionally, LC-MS metabolomic analysis indicated that this system caused substantial significant disruptions in the TCA cycle, amino acid metabolism, purine metabolism and phospholipid metabolism. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy suggested contact-electro-catalysis could further availably degrade the organic matter. We anticipate that this method can provide an eco-friendly, highly efficient and economic approach for effective control of harmful algal blooms.

Endowing 1T'-ReS2 Nanosheets with Sonopiezoelectric Property by Theoretical-Guided Vacancy-Manipulated Peierls Distortion for Tumor Ferroptosis Therapy

Sonopiezoelectric therapy harnesses piezoelectric materials to efficiently generate destructive reactive oxygen species when exposed to ultrasound. This innovative approach shows promise for tumor treatment by combining precise targeting of tumor sites through noninvasive ultrasound control with high reactive oxygen species generation capabilities via the piezoelectric effect. This study utilizes a theoretical-guided method to manipulate atomic vacancy defects and regulate the Peierls distortion in 1T'-ReS2 nanosheets, thereby imparting them with sonopiezoelectric properties not inherent to the original material. Furthermore, the plentiful unsaturated sites of ReS2 nanosheets endow them with excellent catalase- and peroxidase-mimicking activities. The reactive oxygen species generation by the engineered ReS2 nanosheets also leads to the depletion of glutathione. These capabilities are leveraged for tumor ferroptosis therapy via the classical pathway involving the 7-member 11-glutathione-GPX4 signaling axis, alongside the downregulation of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase and ferritin levels and the upregulation of fatty acid CoA ligase 4 expression. This showcases the innovative approach and potential applications of employing 1T'-ReS2 nanosheets in cancer treatment through theoretical design and materials engineering.

Singlet Oxygen Photophysics: From Liquid Solvents to Mammalian Cells

Molecular oxygen, O2, has long provided a cornerstone for studies in chemistry, physics, and biology. Although the triplet ground state, O2(X3Σg-), has garnered much attention, the lowest excited electronic state, O2(a1Δg), commonly called singlet oxygen, has attracted appreciable interest, principally because of its unique chemical reactivity in systems ranging from the Earth's atmosphere to biological cells. Because O2(a1Δg) can be produced and deactivated in processes that involve light, the photophysics of O2(a1Δg) are equally important. Moreover, pathways for O2(a1Δg) deactivation that regenerate O2(X3Σg-), which address fundamental principles unto themselves, kinetically compete with the chemical reactions of O2(a1Δg) and, thus, have practical significance. Due to technological advances (e.g., lasers, optical detectors, microscopes), data acquired in the past ∼20 years have increased our understanding of O2(a1Δg) photophysics appreciably and facilitated both spatial and temporal control over the behavior of O2(a1Δg). One goal of this Review is to summarize recent developments that have broad ramifications, focusing on systems in which oxygen forms a contact complex with an organic molecule M (e.g., a liquid solvent). An important concept is the role played by the M+•O2-• charge-transfer state in both the formation and deactivation of O2(a1Δg).

Two-Dimensional Atomically Thin Piezoelectric Nanosheets for Efficient Pyroptosis-Dominated Sonopiezoelectric Cancer Therapy

Sonopiezocatalytic therapy is an emerging therapeutic strategy that utilizes ultrasound irradiation to activate piezoelectric materials, inducing polarization and energy band bending to facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the efficient generation of ROS is hindered by the long distance of charge migration from the bulk to the material surface. Herein, atomically thin Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) (AT-BON) nanosheets are rationally engineered through disrupting the weaker hydrogen bonds within the [OH] and [NO3] layer in the bulk material. The ultrathin structure of AT-BON piezocatalytic nanosheets shortens the migration distance of carriers, expands the specific surface area, and accelerates the charge transfer efficiency, showcasing a natural advantage in ROS generation. Importantly, the non-centrosymmetric polar crystal structure grants the nanosheets the ability to separate electron-hole pairs. Under ultrasonic mechanical stress, Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) nanosheets with the remarkable piezoelectric feature exhibit the desirable in vivo antineoplastic outcomes in both breast cancer model and liver cancer model. Especially, the AT-BON-induced ROS bursts lead to the activation of the Caspase-1-driven pyroptosis pathway. This study highlights the beneficial impact of bulk material thinning on enhancing ROS generation efficiency and anti-cancer effects.

Revealing the Optimization Route of Piezoelectric Sonosensitizers: From Mechanism to Engineering Methods

Piezoelectric catalysis is a novel catalytic technology that has developed rapidly in recent years and has attracted extensive interest among researchers in the field of tumor therapy for its acoustic-sensitizing properties. Nevertheless, researchers are still controversial about the key technical difficulties in the modulation of piezoelectric sonosensitizers for tumor therapy applications, which is undoubtedly a major obstacle to the performance modulation of piezoelectric sonosensitizers. Clarification of this challenge will be beneficial to the design and optimization of piezoelectric sonosensitizers in the future. Here, the authors start from the mechanism of piezoelectric catalysis and elaborate the mechanism and methods of defect engineering and phase engineering for the performance modulation of piezoelectric sonosensitizers based on the energy band theory. The combined therapeutic strategy of piezoelectric sonosensitizers with enzyme catalysis and immunotherapy is introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of piezoelectric sonosensitizers are highlighted. Hopefully, the explorations can guide researchers toward the optimization of piezoelectric sonosensitizers and can be applied in their own research.

Integrated organosilica nanomedicine enables sonoimaging, sonochemistry and antitumor sonodynamic therapy

Sonography with its non-invasive and deep tissue-penetrating characteristics, not only contributes to promising developments in clinical disease diagnosis but also obtains acknowledgments as a prospective therapeutic approach in the field of tumor treatment. However, it remains a challenge for sonography simultaneously to achieve efficient imaging and therapeutic functionality. Here, we present an innovative integrated diagnosis and treatment paradigm by developing the nanomedicine of percarbamide-bromide-mesoporous organosilica spheres (MOS) with RGD peptide modification (PBMR) by loading percarbamide and bromide in MOS which were prepared by a one-step O/W microemulsion method. The PBMR nanomedicine effectively modifies the tumor acoustic environment to improve sonoimaging efficacy and induces sonochemical reactions to enhance the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for tumor treatment efficiency under sonography. The combination of PBMR nanomedicine and SDT achieved multiple ROS generation through the controlled sonochemical reactions and significantly boosted the potency of sonodynamic therapy and induced significant tumor regression with non-invasive tissue penetrability and minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Simultaneously, the generation of oxygen gas in the sonochemical process augments ultrasound reflection, resulting in a 4.9-fold increase in imaging grayscale. Our research establishes an effective platform for the synergistic integration of sonoimaging and sonodynamic antitumor therapy, offering a novel approach for precise antitumor treatment in the potential clinical applications.

Sulfur-Vacancy-Engineered Two-Dimensional Cu@SnS2-x Nanosheets Constructed via Heterovalent Substitution for High-Efficiency Piezocatalytic Tumor Therapy

Ultrasound (US)-mediated piezocatalytic tumor therapy has attracted much attention due to its notable tissue-penetration capabilities, noninvasiveness, and low oxygen dependency. Nevertheless, the efficiency of piezocatalytic therapy is limited due to an inadequate piezoelectric response, low separation of electron-hole (e--h+) pairs, and complex tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, an ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) sulfur-vacancy-engineered (Sv-engineered) Cu@SnS2-x nanosheet (NS) with an enhanced piezoelectric effect was constructed via the heterovalent substitution strategy of Sn4+ by Cu2+. The introduction of Cu2+ ion not only causes changes in the crystal structure to increase polarization but also generates rich Sv to decrease band gap from 2.16 to 1.62 eV and inhibit e--h+ pairs recombination, collectively leading to the highly efficient generation of reactive oxygen species under US irradiation. Moreover, Cu@SnS2-x shows US-enhanced TME-responsive Fenton-like catalytic activity and glutathione depletion ability, further aggravating the oxidative stress. Both in vitro and in vivo results prove that the Sv-engineered Cu@SnS2-x NSs can significantly kill tumor cells and achieve high-efficiency piezocatalytic tumor therapy in a biocompatible manner. Overall, this study provides a new avenue for sonocatalytic therapy and broadens the application of 2D piezoelectric materials.

Discovery of molecular ferroelectric catalytic annulation for quinolines

Ferroelectrics as emerging and attractive catalysts have shown tremendous potential for applications including wastewater treatment, hydrogen production, nitrogen fixation, and organic synthesis, etc. In this study, we demonstrate that molecular ferroelectric crystal TMCM-CdCl3 (TMCM = trimethylchloromethylammonium) with multiaxial ferroelectricity and superior piezoelectricity has an effective catalytic activity on the direct construction of the pharmacologically important substituted quinoline derivatives via one-pot [3 + 2 + 1] annulation of anilines and terminal alkynes by using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the carbon source. The recrystallized TMCM-CdCl3 crystals from DMF remain well ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. Upon ultrasonic condition, periodic changes in polarization contribute to the release of free charges from the surface of the ferroelectric domains in nano size, which then quickly interacts with the substrates in the solution to trigger the pivotal redox process. Our work advances the molecular ferroelectric crystal as a catalytic route to organic synthesis, not only providing valuable direction for molecular ferroelectrics but also further enriching the executable range of ferroelectric catalysis.

Piezoelectric Biomaterials Inspired by Nature for Applications in Biomedicine and Nanotechnology

Bioelectricity provides electrostimulation to regulate cell/tissue behaviors and functions. In the human body, bioelectricity can be generated in electromechanically responsive tissues and organs, as well as biomolecular building blocks that exhibit piezoelectricity, with a phenomenon known as the piezoelectric effect. Inspired by natural bio-piezoelectric phenomenon, efforts have been devoted to exploiting high-performance synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials, including molecular materials, polymeric materials, ceramic materials, and composite materials. Notably, piezoelectric biomaterials polarize under mechanical strain and generate electrical potentials, which can be used to fabricate electronic devices. Herein, a review article is proposed to summarize the design and research progress of piezoelectric biomaterials and devices toward bionanotechnology. First, the functions of bioelectricity in regulating human electrophysiological activity from cellular to tissue level are introduced. Next, recent advances as well as structure-property relationship of various natural and synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials are provided in detail. In the following part, the applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in tissue engineering, drug delivery, biosensing, energy harvesting, and catalysis are systematically classified and discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of piezoelectric biomaterials are presented. It is believed that this review will provide inspiration for the design and development of innovative piezoelectric biomaterials in the fields of biomedicine and nanotechnology.

Multimaterial 3D and 4D Bioprinting of Heterogenous Constructs for Tissue Engineering

Additive manufacturing (AM), which is based on the principle of layer-by-layer shaping and stacking of discrete materials, has shown significant benefits in the fabrication of complicated implants for tissue engineering (TE). However, many native tissues exhibit anisotropic heterogenous constructs with diverse components and functions. Consequently, the replication of complicated biomimetic constructs using conventional AM processes based on a single material is challenging. Multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting (with time as the fourth dimension) has emerged as a promising solution for constructing multifunctional implants with heterogenous constructs that can mimic the host microenvironment better than single-material alternatives. Notably, 4D-printed multimaterial implants with biomimetic heterogenous architectures can provide a time-dependent programmable dynamic microenvironment that can promote cell activity and tissue regeneration in response to external stimuli. This paper first presents the typical design strategies of biomimetic heterogenous constructs in TE applications. Subsequently, the latest processes in the multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting of heterogenous tissue constructs are discussed, along with their advantages and challenges. In particular, the potential of multimaterial 4D bioprinting of smart multifunctional tissue constructs is highlighted. Furthermore, this review provides insights into how multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting can facilitate the realization of next-generation TE applications.

H2O2 Photosynthesis from H2O and O2 under Weak Light by Carbon Nitrides with the Piezoelectric Effect

Driven by the essential need of a green, safe, and low-cost approach to producing H2O2, a highly valuable multifunctional chemical, artificial photosynthesis emerges as a promising avenue. However, current catalyst systems remain challenging, due to the need of high-density sunlight, poor selectivity and activity, or/and unfavorable thermodynamics. Here, we reported that an indirect 2e- water oxidation reaction (WOR) in photocatalytic H2O2 production was unusually activated by C5N2 with piezoelectric effects. Interestingly, under ultrasonication, C5N2 exhibited an overall H2O2 photosynthesis rate of 918.4 μM/h and an exceptionally high solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 2.6% after calibration under weak light (0.1 sun). Mechanism studies showed that the piezoelectric effect of carbon nitride overcame the high uphill thermodynamics of *OH intermediate generation, which enabled a new pathway for 2e- WOR, the kinetic limiting step in the overall H2O2 production from H2O and O2. Benefiting from the outstanding sonication-assisted photocatalytic H2O2 generation under weak light, the concept was further successfully adapted to biomedical applications in efficient sono-photochemodynamic therapy for cancer treatment and water purification.

Surprising Effects of Ti and Al2O3 Coatings on Tribocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes by GaN Nanoparticles

GaN is more stable than most metal oxide semiconductors for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in harsh conditions, while its catalytic efficiency has been difficult to be substantially improved. In this study, the tribocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by GaN nanoparticles has been investigated. Stimulated through magnetic stirring using homemade Teflon magnetic rotary disks in glass beakers, the GaN nanoparticles were found to induce negligible degradation in rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) solutions. Surprisingly, the degradation was greatly enhanced in beakers with Ti and Al2O3 coatings on their bottoms: 99.2% and 99.8% of the 20 mg/L RhB solutions were degraded in 3 h for the Ti and Al2O3 coatings, respectively, and 56% and 60.2% of the 20 mg/L MO solutions were degraded in 24 h for the Ti and Al2O3 coatings, respectively. Moreover, the MO molecules were only broken into smaller organic molecules for the Ti coating, while they were completely degraded for the Al2O3 coating. These findings are important for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants by GaN in harsh environments and for achieving a better understanding of tribocatalysis as well.

Simultaneous Cu(II)-EDTA decomplexation and Cu(II) recovery using integrated contact-electro-catalysis and capacitive deionization from electroplating wastewater

The complex of heavy metals and organic acids leads to high difficulty in heavy metals separation by traditional technologies. Meanwhile, alkaline precipitation commonly used in industry causes the great consumption of resources and extra pollution. Herein, the effective decomplexation of Cu(Ⅱ)-EDTA and synchronous recycling of Cu2+ were realized by contact-electro-catalysis (CEC) coupled with capacitive deionization (CDI) innovatively. In particular, fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) as dielectric powders could generate reactive oxygen species under ultrasonic stimulation, realizing continuous deaminization and decarboxylation of Cu(Ⅱ)-EDTA and accelerating the totally breakage of Cu-O and Cu-N bonds. Additionally, the degradation pathway and intermediates evolution of Cu(Ⅱ)-EDTA were investigated using various characterization methods. It was confirmed that decarboxylation predominantly governed the degradation process of Cu(Ⅱ)-EDTA in CEC. During the course of treatment, the degradation ratio of Cu(Ⅱ)-EDTA reached 86.4 % within 150 min. Impressively, this strategy had satisfactory applicability to other metal combinations and excellent cycle stability. Subsequently, the released Cu ions were captured by CuSe cathode electrode through CDI. This research elucidated the degradation mechanism of persistent organic pollutant during CEC, and provided a novel approach for efficiently treating industrial wastewater containing metal complexes and advancing the exploitation and utilization of new technologies for metal recovery.

Doping-Induced piezoelectricity in Ba2Nb2-xFexO6-δ double perovskite oxides for efficient hydrogen peroxide production via piezocatalysis in pure water

Piezocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable alternative for hydrogen peroxide production. However, the current development of efficient piezocatalysts is predominantly focusing on those conventional piezoelectric ceramic oxides with high permittivity and limited catalytic activities. Therefore, innovative approaches to develop novel piezocatalysts in particular from these outstanding paraelectric semiconductors are highly required. In this work, by employing a feasible doping strategy, robust piezoelectric property is created on the Ba2Nb2-xFexO6-δ double perovskite oxides, typically characterized by a stable paraelectric cubic structure. Optimum Fe doping not only intensifies the double perovskite phase but also inspires a phase transition from a centrosymmetric cubic to a piezoelectric tetragonal phase, thereby achieving desirable piezoelectricity and enabling a series of favorable physical properties including redox activity, active sites of anion defects, reduced bandgap, and increased free charge density. All these are important factors to enhance piezocatalytic activity. As a result, Ba2NbFeO6-δ achieved by the optimum Fe doping demonstrated exceptional piezocatalytic H2O2 yield of 512 and 690 µmol g-1 h-1 under atmosphere and oxygen-purging conditions, respectively, without the presence of any sacrificial agents. Mechanistic investigations reveal that both water oxidation and oxygen reduction involve in the H2O2 production, wherein piezopotential plays a critical role not only in facilitating the charge carrier separation and transportation but also in modulating the band structure to enhance the catalyst redox capacity. This study offers a feasible and universal strategy for the design of novel piezocatalysts, expanding the windows for catalyst selection for piezocatalysis.

Were Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes Really Understood? Basic Concepts, Cognitive Biases, and Experimental Details

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for pollutant removal have attracted extensive interest, but some controversies about the identification of reactive species were usually observed. This critical review aims to comprehensively introduce basic concepts and rectify cognitive biases and appeals to pay more attention to experimental details in PS-AOPs, so as to accurately explore reaction mechanisms. The review scientifically summarizes the character, generation, and identification of different reactive species. It then highlights the complexities about the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance, the uncertainties about the use of probes and scavengers, and the necessities about the determination of scavenger concentration. The importance of the choice of buffer solution, operating mode, terminator, and filter membrane is also emphasized. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives to alleviate the misinterpretations toward reactive species and reaction mechanisms in PS-AOPs.

Calcium Single Atom Confined in Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Coupled Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membrane for High-Performance Piezocatalysis

A piezoelectric polymer membrane based on single metal atoms was demonstrated to be effective by anchoring isolated calcium (Ca) atoms on a composite of nitrogen-doped carbon and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The addition of Ca-atom-anchored carbon nanoparticles not only promotes the formation of the β phase (from 29.8 to 56.3%), the most piezoelectrically active phase, in PVDF, but also introduces much higher porosity and hydrophilicity. Under ultrasonic excitation, the fabricated catalyst membrane demonstrates a record-high and stable dye decomposing rate of 0.11 min-1 and antibacterial efficiencies of 99.8%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the primary contribution to catalytic activity arises from single-atom Ca doping and that a possible synergistic effect between PVDF and Ca atoms can improve the catalytic performance. It is shown that O2 molecules can be easily hydrogenated to produce ·OH on Ca-PVDF, and the local electric field provided by the β-phase-PVDF might enhance the production of ·O2-. The proposed polymer membrane is expected to inspire the rational design of piezocatalysts and pave the way for the application of piezocatalysis technology for practical environmental remediation.

Spontaneous Wetting Induced by Contact-Electrification at Liquid-Solid Interface

Wettability significantly influences various surface interactions and applications at the liquid-solid interface. However, the understanding is complicated by the intricate charge exchange occurring through contact electrification (CE) during this process. The understanding of the influence of triboelectric charge on wettability remains challenging, especially due to the complexities involved in concurrently measuring contact angles and interfacial electrical signals. Here, the relationship is investigated between surface charge density and change of contact angle of dielectric films after contact with water droplets. It is observed that the charge exchange when water spared lead to a spontaneous wetting phenomenon, which is termed as the contact electrification induced wetting (CEW). Notably, these results demonstrate a linear dependence between the change of contact angle (CA) of the materials and the density of surface charge on the solid surface. Continuous CEW tests show that not only the static CA but also the dynamics of wetting are influenced by the accumulation charges at the interface. The mechanism behind CEW involves the redistribution of surface charges on a solid surface and polar water molecules within liquid. This interaction results in a decrease in interface energy, leading to a reduction in the CA. Ab initio calculations suggest that the reduction in interface energy may stem from the enhanced surface charge on the substrate, which strengthens the hydrogen bond interaction between water and the substrate. These findings have the potential to advance the understanding of CE and wetting phenomena, with applications in energy harvesting, catalysis, and droplet manipulation at liquid-solid interfaces.

Cu@CuOx/WO3 with photo-regulated singlet oxygen and oxygen adatoms generation for selective photocatalytic aromatic amines to imines

Photocatalysts can absorb light and activate molecular O2 under mild conditions, but the generation of unsuitable reactive oxygen species often limits their use in synthesizing fine chemicals. To address this issue, we disperse 1 wt% copper on tungsten trioxide (WO3) support to create an efficient catalyst for selective oxidative coupling of aromatic amines to imines under sunlight irradiation at room temperature. Copper consists of a metallic copper core and an oxide shell. Experimental and density functional theory calculations have confirmed that Cu2O is the primary activation site. Under λ < 475 nm, the light excites electrons of the valence bands in Cu2O and WO3, which activate O2 to superoxide radical •O2-. Then rapidly transforms into oxygen adatoms (•O) and oxygen anion radicals (•O-) species on the surface of Cu2O. Simultaneously, it is captured by holes in the WO3 valence band to generate singlet oxygen (1O2). •O bind to 1O2 promoting the coupling reaction of amines. When λ > 475 nm, intense light absorption due to the localized surface plasmon resonance excites numerous electrons in Cu to promote the oxidative coupling with the adsorbed O2. This study presents a promising approach towards the design of high-performance photocatalysts for solar energy conversion and environmentally-friendly oxidative organic synthesis.

A Distinctive Insight into Inorganic Sonosensitizers: Design Principles and Application Domains

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) as a promising non-invasive anti-tumor means features the preferable penetration depth, which nevertheless, usually can't work without sonosensitizers. Sonosensitizers produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the presence of ultrasound to directly kill tumor cells, and concurrently activate anti-tumor immunity especially after integration with tumor microenvironment (TME)-engineered nanobiotechnologies and combined therapy. Current sonosensitizers are classified into organic and inorganic ones, and current most reviews only cover organic sonosensitizers and highlighted their anti-tumor applications. However, there have few specific reviews that focus on inorganic sonosensitizers including their design principles, microenvironment regulation, etc. In this review, inorganic sonosensitizers are first classified according to their design rationales rather than composition, and the action rationales and underlying chemistry features are highlighted. Afterward, what and how TME is regulated based on the inorganic sonosensitizers-based SDT nanoplatform with an emphasis on the TME targets-engineered nanobiotechnologies are elucidated. Additionally, the combined therapy and their applications in non-cancer diseases are also outlined. Finally, the setbacks and challenges, and proposed the potential solutions and future directions is pointed out. This review provides a comprehensive and detailed horizon on inorganic sonosensitizers, and will arouse more attentions on SDT.

MoS2@MWCNTs with Rich Vacancy Defects for Effective Piezocatalytic Degradation of Norfloxacin via Innergenerated-H2O2: Enhanced Nonradical Pathway and Synergistic Mechanism with Radical Pathway

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based materials for piezocatalysis are unsatisfactory due to their low actual piezoelectric coefficient and poor electrical conductivity. Herein, 1T/3R phase MoS2 grown in situ on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was proposed. MoS2@MWCNTs exhibited the interwoven morphology of thin nanoflowers and tubes, and the piezoelectric response of MoS2@MWCNTs was 4.07 times higher than that of MoS2 via piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) characterization. MoS2@MWCNTs exhibited superior activity with a 91% degradation rate of norfloxacin (NOR) after actually working 24 min (as for rhodamine B, reached 100% within 18 min) by pulse-mode ultrasonic vibration-triggered piezocatalysis. It was found that piezocatalysis for removing pollutants was attributed to the synergistic effect of free radicals (•OH and O2•-) and nonfree radical (1O2, key role) pathways, together with the innergenerated-H2O2 promoting the degradation rate. 1O2 can be generated by electron transfer and energy transfer pathways. The presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) induced the transformation of O2 to 1O2 by triplet energy transfer. The fast charge transfer in MoS2@MWCNTs heterostructure and the coexistence of sulfur vacancies and OVs enhanced charge carrier separation resulting in a prominent piezoelectric effect. This work opens up new avenues for the development of efficient piezocatalysts that can be utilized for environmental purification.

Ultrasound-Triggered Piezoelectric Catalysis of Zinc Oxide@Glucose Derived Carbon Spheres for the Treatment of MRSA Infected Osteomyelitis

Currently, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced osteomyelitis is a clinically life-threatening disease, however, long-term antibiotic treatment can lead to bacterial resistance, posing a huge challenge to treatment and public health. In this study, glucose-derived carbon spheres loaded with zinc oxide (ZnO@HTCS) are successfully constructed. This composite demonstrates the robust ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under ultrasound (US) irradiation, eradicating 99.788% ± 0.087% of MRSA within 15 min and effectively treating MRSA-induced osteomyelitis infection. Piezoelectric force microscopy tests and finite element method simulations reveal that the ZnO@HTCS composite exhibits superior piezoelectric catalytic performance compared to pure ZnO, making it a unique piezoelectric sonosensitizer. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the formation of a Mott-Schottky heterojunction and an internal piezoelectric field within the interface accelerates the electron transfer and the separation of electron-hole pairs. Concurrently, surface vacancies of the composite enable the adsorption of a greater amount of oxygen, enhancing the piezoelectric catalytic effect and generating a substantial quantity of ROS. This work not only presents a promising approach for augmenting piezoelectric catalysis through construction of a Schottky heterojunction interface but also provides a novel, efficient therapeutic strategy for treating osteomyelitis.

Electrostatic Field in Contact-Electro-Catalysis Driven C-F Bond Cleavage of Perfluoroalkyl Substances

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent and toxic to human health. It is demanding for high-efficient and green technologies to remove PFASs from water. In this study, a novel PFAS treatment technology was developed, utilizing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles (1-5 μm) as the catalyst and a low frequency ultrasound (US, 40 kHz, 0.3 W/cm2) for activation. Remarkably, this system can induce near-complete defluorination for different structured PFASs. The underlying mechanism relies on contact electrification between PTFE and water, which induces cumulative electrons on PTFE surface, and creates a high surface voltage (tens of volts). Such high surface voltage can generate abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS, i.e., O2⋅-, HO⋅, etc.) and a strong interfacial electrostatic field (IEF of 109~1010 V/m). Consequently, the strong IEF significantly activates PFAS molecules and reduces the energy barrier of O2⋅- nucleophilic reaction. Simultaneously, the co-existence of surface electrons (PTFE*(e-)) and HO⋅ enables synergetic reduction and oxidation of PFAS and its intermediates, leading to enhanced and thorough defluorination. The US/PTFE method shows compelling advantages of low energy consumption, zero chemical input, and few harmful intermediates. It offers a new and promising solution for effectively treating the PFAS-contaminated drinking water.

Ultrasound-Controlled Prodrug Activation: Emerging Strategies in Polymer Mechanochemistry and Sonodynamic Therapy

Ultrasound has gained prominence in biomedical applications due to its noninvasive nature and ability to penetrate deep tissue with spatial and temporal resolution. The burgeoning field of ultrasound-responsive prodrug systems exploits the mechanical and chemical effects of ultrasonication for the controlled activation of prodrugs. In polymer mechanochemistry, materials scientists exploit the sonomechanical effect of acoustic cavitation to mechanochemically activate force-sensitive prodrugs. On the other hand, researchers in the field of sonodynamic therapy adopt fundamentally distinct methodologies, utilizing the sonochemical effect (e.g., generation of reactive oxygen species) of ultrasound in the presence of sonosensitizers to induce chemical transformations that activate prodrugs. This cross-disciplinary review comprehensively examines these two divergent yet interrelated approaches, both of which originated from acoustic cavitation. It highlights molecular and materials design strategies and potential applications in diverse therapeutic contexts, from chemotherapy to immunotherapy and gene therapy methods, and discusses future directions in this rapidly advancing domain.

Piezocatalytic Schottky Junction Treats Atherosclerosis by a Biomimetic Trojan Horse Strategy

The atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque is characterized by the foamy macrophage burden, involving impaired cholesterol efflux and deficient efferocytosis. Correspondingly, piezocatalytic therapy is an emerging solution for eliminating the foamy macrophage burden with satisfactory spatiotemporal controllability and deep penetration depth. Herein, a biomimetic Trojan horse (Au-ZnO@MM) is engineered by coating the macrophage membrane (MM) onto the surface of a rod-like Au-ZnO Schottky Junction to effectively relieve the atherosclerotic progression. These Trojan horses with the coating of MM are actively transported into subsistent foamy macrophages and generate abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) via ultrasound-activated piezocatalysis. ROS-initiated autophagy and mitochondrial dysfunction induce substantial cell apoptosis, alleviating the burden of subsistent foamy macrophages. The resulting apoptotic fragments further significantly facilitate cholesterol excretion and trigger efferocytosis of intraplaque fresh macrophages. Ultimately, the biomimetic Au-ZnO@MM piezocatalyst not only inhibits the foaming capacity of macrophages, but also improves the function of removing cell debris, which can stabilize atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque. Meanwhile, the plasmon resonance effect of integrated gold nanoparticles enables favorable photoacoustic molecular imaging for real-time image-guided atherosclerotic therapy. This proposed biomimetic Trojan horse strategy provides the paradigm of employing ultrasound-activated piezocatalytic methodology for enhanced atherosclerotic theranostics.

Pterostilbene nanoemulsion promotes Nrf2 signaling pathway to downregulate oxidative stress for treating Alzheimer's disease

Pterostilbene, a stilbene compound, demonstrates neuroprotective effects through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, pterostilbene exhibits low bioavailability. We developed a pterostilbene nanoemulsion with better release stability and particle size. Behavioral tests, including the Y maze, new object recognition, and water maze, revealed that the pterostilbene nanoemulsion demonstrated a more significant effect on improving learning and memory function than pterostilbene. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed that pterostilbene nanoemulsion was more potent in safeguarding hippocampal neurons and inhibiting apoptosis and oxidative stress than pterostilbene. Further results from the Western blot and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction indicated that the enhanced efficacy of pterostilbene nanoemulsion may be attributed to its stronger promotion of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 signaling pathway. Hence, enhanced drug delivery efficiency decreased dosage requirements and increased the bioavailability of pterostilbene, thereby potentially providing a safe, effective, and convenient treatment option for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Transcranial Magneto-Acoustic Stimulation Protects Synaptic Rehabilitation from Amyloid-Beta Plaques via Regulation of Microglial Functions

Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS), which is characterized by high spatiotemporal resolution and high penetrability, is a non-invasive neuromodulation technology based on the magnetic-acoustic coupling effect. To reveal the effects of TMAS treatment on amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque and synaptic plasticity in Alzheimer's disease, we conducted a comparative analysis of TMAS and transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) based on acoustic effects in 5xFAD mice and BV2 microglia cells. We found that the TMAS-TUS treatment effectively reduced amyloid plaque loads and plaque-associated neurotoxicity. Additionally, TMAS-TUS treatment ameliorated impairments in long-term memory formation and long-term potentiation. Moreover, TMAS-TUS treatment stimulated microglial proliferation and migration while enhancing the phagocytosis and clearance of Aβ. In 5xFAD mice with induced microglial exhaustion, TMAS-TUS treatment-mediated Aβ plaque reduction, synaptic rehabilitation improvement, and the increase in phospho-AKT levels were diminished. Overall, our study highlights that stimulation of hippocampal microglia by TMAS treatment can induce anti-cognitive impairment effects via PI3K-AKT signaling, providing hope for the development of new strategies for an adjuvant therapy for Alzheimer's disease.

Enhanced Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species via Piezoelectrics based on p-n Heterojunctions with Built-In Electric Field

Tuning the charge transfer processes through a built-in electric field is an effective way to accelerate the dynamics of electro- and photocatalytic reactions. However, the coupling of the built-in electric field of p-n heterojunctions and the microstrain-induced polarization on the impact of piezocatalysis has not been fully explored. Herein, we demonstrate the role of the built-in electric field of p-type BiOI/n-type BiVO4 heterojunctions in enhancing their piezocatalytic behaviors. The highly crystalline p-n heterojunction is synthesized by using a coprecipitation method under ambient aqueous conditions. Under ultrasonic irradiation in water exposed to air, the p-n heterojunctions exhibit significantly higher production rates of reactive species (·OH, ·O2-, and 1O2) as compared to isolated BiVO4 and BiOI. Also, the piezocatalytic rate of H2O2 production with the BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunction reaches 480 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 1.6- and 12-fold higher than those of BiVO4 and BiOI, respectively. Furthermore, the p-n heterojunction maintains a highly stable H2O2 production rate under ultrasonic irradiation for up to 5 h. The results from the experiments and equation-driven simulations of the strain and piezoelectric potential distributions indicate that the piezocatalytic reactivity of the p-n heterojunction resulted from the polarization intensity induced by periodic ultrasound, which is enhanced by the built-in electric field of the p-n heterojunctions. This study provides new insights into the design of piezocatalysts and opens up new prospects for applications in medicine, environmental remediation, and sonochemical sensors.

Interdisciplinary-Inspired Smart Antibacterial Materials and Their Biomedical Applications

The discovery of antibiotics has saved millions of lives, but the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become another problem in modern medicine. To avoid or reduce the overuse of antibiotics in antibacterial treatments, stimuli-responsive materials, pathogen-targeting nanoparticles, immunogenic nano-toxoids, and biomimetic materials are being developed to make sterilization better and smarter than conventional therapies. The common goal of smart antibacterial materials (SAMs) is to increase the antibiotic efficacy or function via an antibacterial mechanism different from that of antibiotics in order to increase the antibacterial and biological properties while reducing the risk of drug resistance. The research and development of SAMs are increasingly interdisciplinary because new designs require the knowledge of different fields and input/collaboration from scientists in different fields. A good understanding of energy conversion in materials, physiological characteristics in cells and bacteria, and bactericidal structures and components in nature are expected to promote the development of SAMs. In this review, the importance of multidisciplinary insights for SAMs is emphasized, and the latest advances in SAMs are categorized and discussed according to the pertinent disciplines including materials science, physiology, and biomimicry.

Mechanically Enhanced Detoxification of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants by a Two-Dimensional Piezoresponsive Metal-Organic Framework

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) refer to toxic chemical substances used in warfare. Recently, CWAs have been a critical threat for public safety due to their high toxicity. Metal-organic frameworks have exhibited great potential in protecting against CWAs due to their high crystallinity, stable structure, large specific surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. However, the metal clusters of most reported MOFs might be highly consumed when applied in CWA hydrolysis. Herein, we fabricated a two-dimensional piezoresponsive UiO-66-F4 and subjected it to CWA simulant dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) detoxification under sonic conditions. The results show that sonication can effectively enhance the removal performance under optimal conditions; the reaction rate constant k was upgraded 45% by sonication. Moreover, the first-principle calculation revealed that the band gap could be further widened with the application of mechanical stress, which was beneficial for the generation of 1O2, thus further upgrading the detoxification performance toward DMNP. This work demonstrated that mechanical vibration could be introduced to CWA protection, but promising applications are rarely reported.

PVDF-Based Piezo-Catalytic Membranes-A Net-Zero Emission Approach towards Textile Wastewater Purification

Among the various water purification techniques, advancements in membrane technology, with better fabrication and analysis, are receiving the most research attention. The piezo-catalytic degradation of water pollutants is an emerging area of research in water purification technology. This review article focuses on piezoelectric polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) polymer-based membranes and their nanocomposites for textile wastewater remediation. At the beginning of this article, the classification of piezoelectric materials is discussed. Among the various membrane-forming polymers, PVDF is a piezoelectric polymer discussed in detail due to its exceptional piezoelectric properties. Polyvinylidene difluoride can show excellent piezoelectric properties in the beta phase. Therefore, various methods of β-phase enhancement within the PVDF polymer and various factors that have a critical impact on its piezo-catalytic activity are briefly explained. This review article also highlights the major aspects of piezoelectric membranes in the context of dye degradation and a net-zero approach. The β-phase of the PVDF piezoelectric material generates an electron-hole pair through external vibrations. The possibility of piezo-catalytic dye degradation via mechanical vibrations and the subsequent capture of the resulting CO2 and H2 gases open up the possibility of achieving the net-zero goal.

Bionanoengineered 2D monoelemental selenene for piezothrombolysis

Thrombosis-related diseases represent the leading causes of disability or death worldwide. However, conventional thrombolytic therapies are subjected to narrow therapeutic window, short circulation half-life and bleeding. Herein, we rationally design and develop a safe and efficient nonpharmaceutical thrombolysis strategy based on a specific piezocatalytic effect arising from platelet membrane (PM)-conjugated two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric selenene, Se-PM nanosheets (NSs). The 2D selenene is fabricated from nonlayered bulk selenium powder by a facile liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the PM conjugation confers selenene with the distinct thrombus-homing feature. Under ultrasonic activation, the piezoelectric characteristic of selenene triggers electrons and holes separation, resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by reacting with surrounding H2O and O2 in the thrombosis microenvironment for thrombolysis. Both systematic in vitro and in vivo assessments demonstrate that the biocompatible Se-PM NSs efficiently degrade erythrocytes, fibrin and artificial blood clots under ultrasound irradiation. Compared to the clinical thrombolytic drug urokinase plasminogen activator, the engineered Se-PM NSs possess excellent thrombolytic efficacy by single treatment in the tail thrombosis animal model without bleeding risk. The engineered Se-PM nanoplatform marks an exciting jumping-off point for research into the application of piezocatalysis in clinical treatment of thrombosis.

Structure Engineered High Piezo-Photoelectronic Performance for Boosted Sono-Photodynamic Therapy

Sono-photodynamic therapy is hindered by the limited tissue penetration depth of the external light source and the quick recombination of electron-hole owing to the random movement of charge carriers. In this study, orthorhombic ZnSnO3 quantum dots (QDs) with piezo-photoelectronic effects are successfully encapsulated in hexagonal upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) using a one-pot thermal decomposition method to form an all-in-one watermelon-like structured sono-photosensitizer (ZnSnO3 @UCNPs). The excited near-infrared light has high penetration depth, and the watermelon-like structure allows for full contact between the UCNPs and ZnSnO3 QDs, achieving ultrahigh Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency of up to 80.30%. Upon ultrasonic and near-infrared laser co-activation, the high temperature and pressure generated lead to the deformation of the UCNPs, thereby driving the deformation of all ZnSnO3 QDs inside the UCNPs, forming many small internal electric fields similar to isotropic electric domains. This piezoelectric effect not only increases the internal electric field intensity of the entire material but also prevents random movement and rapid recombination of charge carriers, thereby achieving satisfactory piezocatalytic performance. By combining the photodynamic effect arising from the energy transfer from UCNPs to ZnSnO3 , synergistic efficacy is realized. This study proposes a novel strategy for designing highly efficient sono-photosensitizers through structural design.

Palladium-Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Black Barium Titanate for Multienzyme-Piezoelectric Synergetic Tumor Therapy

Piezocatalytic tumor therapy is an emerging reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating therapeutic approach that relies on piezoelectric polarization under ultrasound (US) irradiation. Optimizing ROS production is a primary objective for enhancing treatment efficiency. In this study, oxygen-vacancy-rich Pd-integrated black barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles are rationally engineered to boost the ROS generation efficiency via the introduction of Pd. Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation at low temperatures narrows the bandgap of BTO and reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, Pd has dual-enzyme-mimicking characteristics, including peroxidase- and catalase-mimicking activities, which further heighten the therapeutic efficacy by enhancing ROS production and reversing the hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Importantly, the dual enzymatic activity of Pd can be amplified by multiple redox processes sparked by the piezoelectric potential under US stimulation, resulting in bilaterally enhanced multienzyme-piezoelectric synergetic therapy. In vitro and in vivo results confirm high tumor inhibition in murine breast cancer cells. This work stresses the critical effects of defect engineering-optimized piezodynamic tumor therapy.

A metal-organic framework-integrated composite for piezocatalysis-assisted tumour therapy: design, related mechanisms, and recent advances

With the growing need for more effective tumour treatment, piezocatalytic therapy has emerged as a promising approach due to its distinctive capacities to generate ROS through stress induction and regulate the hypoxic state of the TME. MOF-based piezocatalysts not only possess the benefits of piezocatalysis but also exhibit several advantages associated with MOFs, such as tunable pore size, large specific surface area, and good biocompatibility. Therefore, they are expected to become a powerful promoter of piezocatalytic therapy. This review elaborates on the fundamental principles of piezocatalysis and summarises recent advances in the piezocatalytic therapy and combination therapies of tumours, generalising the strategies for constructing piezocatalytic systems based on MOFs. Finally, the challenges confronted and future opportunities for the design and application of piezocatalytic MOF anticancer systems have been discussed.

Acid-Doped Pyridine-Based Polybenzimidazole as a Positive Triboelectric Material with Superior Charge Retention Capability

The energy conversion efficiency of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is severely limited by the charge density of triboelectric materials, while drastic and unavoidable charge decay happens during contact due to the insufficient charge retention capacity of positive triboelectric materials. Here, elaborately synthesized acid-ion-doped pyridine-based polybenzimidazole processing with strong charge retention capability is demonstrated to couple with negatively corona-polarized electrets. As illustrated by thermal stimulation and an ion mass spectrometer, the formation of acid-ion chimerism processes high activation energy for stored charges, and the selective anion migration can compensate the escape of polarized charge. Accordingly, the charge density can reach up to 596 μC m-2 and the charge retention rate reaches 49.7%, which is so far the highest intrinsic charge density obtained in the open air. Thus, the ionic chimerism strategy provides an effective way to suppress the charge escaping in the open air and gives a great expandable avenue for the material challenges of TENG's practical deployment.

Construction of antibacterial bone implants and their application in bone regeneration

Bacterial infection represents a prevalent challenge during the bone repair process, often resulting in implant failure. However, the extensive use of antibiotics has limited local antibacterial effects at the infection site and is prone to side effects. In order to address the issue of bacterial infection during the transplantation of bone implants, four types of bone scaffold implants with long-term antimicrobial functionality have been constructed, including direct contact antimicrobial scaffold, dissolution-penetration antimicrobial scaffold, photocatalytic antimicrobial scaffold, and multimodal synergistic antimicrobial scaffold. The direct contact antimicrobial scaffold involves the physical penetration or disruption of bacterial cell membranes by the scaffold surface or hindrance of bacterial adhesion through surface charge, microstructure, and other factors. The dissolution-penetration antimicrobial scaffold releases antimicrobial substances from the scaffold's interior through degradation and other means to achieve local antimicrobial effects. The photocatalytic antimicrobial scaffold utilizes the absorption of light to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) with enhanced chemical reactivity for antimicrobial activity. ROS can cause damage to bacterial cell membranes, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), proteins, and other components. The multimodal synergistic antimicrobial scaffold involves the combined use of multiple antimicrobial methods to achieve synergistic effects and effectively overcome the limitations of individual antimicrobial approaches. Additionally, the biocompatibility issues of the antimicrobial bone scaffold are also discussed, including in vitro cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation, as well as in vivo bone repair and vascularization. Finally, the challenges and prospects of antimicrobial bone implants are summarized. The development of antimicrobial bone implants can provide effective solutions to bacterial infection issues in bone defect repair in the foreseeable future.

Mechanism and kinetic of piezo-catalytic desulfurization of model and actual fuel samples over CexOy/SrO nanocomposite at room temperature

SOx emissions are primarily caused by compounds containing sulfur in petroleum and fuels, which lead to severe air pollution. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a fast and simple desulfurization method in order to comply with ever-increasing environmental regulations. The newly discovered piezo-catalyst nanocomposite CexOy/SrO can convert mechanical energy directly into chemical energy, thereby enabling mechanically oxidative sulfur desulfurization. 320 W of bath sonication were used to polarize and activate the prepared piezo-catalyst nanocomposite CexOy/SrO for sulfur removal from thiophene and dibenzothiophene as model fuels and kerosene as a real fuel. Using uniform and spherical CeO2/SrO nanocomposites resulted in the highest desulfurization rates of 95.4 %, 97.3 %, and 59.7 %, respectively, for thiophene and dibenzothiophene. This study examined the effect of several parameters, such as sulfur concentration, pH of fuel, dosage of CexOy/SrO nanocomposite, power and time of ultrasonic, and shaking time, on the piezo-desulfurization of thiophene (TP) and dibenzothiophene (DBTP). To identify the major active species in piezo desulfurization, radical trapping experiments were conducted. This study investigated the possibility of reusing the catalyst, and the piezo-desulfurization activity that was demonstrated in the removal of TP and DBTP after 11 cycles as well as the ability of the catalyst to remove real fuel even after 14 cycles was promising. As the kinetic results show, the reaction follows the second order with K = 0.0050. Also, thermodynamic results showed the oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide and sulfoxide is endothermic. Activation energy for second order rate constant is (3.824 Kj/mole). 0.0236 mol-1. Sec-1 was calculated for Arrhenius Constant.

Contact-Electro-Catalysis-Assisted Separation via a Dancing PTFE Membrane for Fouling Control

Advanced oxidization processes (AOPs) offer promising solutions for addressing the fouling issues in membrane separation systems. However, the high energy requirements for electrical or light power in the AOPs can be a drawback. In this study, we present a contact-electro-catalysis (CEC)-based approach for controlling membrane fouling, which is stimulated by mild ultrasonic irradiation. During this process, electrons are transferred between a dancing polytetrafluoroethylene membrane and water or oxygen molecules, resulting in the formation of free radicals •OH and •O2-. These free radicals are capable of degrading or inactivating foulants, eliminating the need for additional chemical cleaners, secondary waste disposal, or external stimuli. Furthermore, the time-dependent voltage spikes/oscillations (peak, +7.8/-8.2 V) generate a nonuniform electric field that drives dielectrophoresis, effectively keeping contaminants away from the membrane surface and further enhancing the antifouling performance of the dancing membrane. Therefore, the CEC-assisted membrane separation system offers a green and effective strategy for controlling membrane fouling through mild mechanical stimulation.

Progress of Piezoelectric Semiconductor Nanomaterials in Sonodynamic Cancer Therapy

Sonodynamic therapy is an emerging noninvasive tumor treatment method that utilizes ultrasound to stimulate sonosensitizers to produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species, inducing tumor cell death. Though sonodynamic therapy has very promising prospects in cancer treatment, the application of early organic sonosensitizers has been limited in efficacy due to the high blood clearance-rate, poor water solubility, and low stability. Inorganic sonosensitizers have thus been developed, among which piezoelectric semiconductor materials have received increasing attention in sonodynamic therapy due to their piezoelectric properties and strong stability. In this review, we summarized the designs, principles, modification strategies, and applications of several commonly used piezoelectric materials in sonodynamic therapy and prospected the future clinical applications for piezoelectric semiconductor materials in sonodynamic therapy.

Ultrasound-Driven Non-Metallic Fenton-Active Center Construction for Extensive Chemodynamic Therapy

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging tumor microenvironment-responsive cancer therapeutic strategy based on Fenton/Fenton-like reactions. However, the effectiveness of CDT is subject to the slow kinetic rate and non-homogeneous distribution of H2 O2 . In this study, a conceptual non-metallic "Fenton-active" center construction strategy is proposed to enhance CDT efficiency using Bi0.44 Ba0.06 Na0.5 TiO2.97 (BNBT-6) nanocrystals. The separated charge carriers under a piezoelectric-induced electric field synchronize the oxidation of H2 O and reduction of H2 O2 , which consequently increases hydroxyl radical (·OH) yield even under low H2 O2 levels. Moreover, acceptor doping induces electron-rich oxygen vacancies to facilitate the dissociation of H2 O2 and H2 O and further promote ·OH generation. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that BNBT-6 induces extensive intracellular oxidative stress and enhances cell-killing efficiency by activating necroptosis in addition to the conventional apoptotic pathway. This study proposes a novel design approach for nanomaterials used in CDT and presents a new treatment strategy for apoptosis-resistant tumors.

Charged Fibrous Dressing to Promote Diabetic Chronic Wound Healing

Diabetic chronic wounds cause a significant amount of pain to patients because of their low cure rates and high recurrence rates. Traditional approaches to treating diabetic chronic wounds often involve the delivery of drugs or cytokines that regulate the microenvironment and eliminate bacterial infection in the wound area, but they are passive in controlling cell behaviors and may lead to drug resistance. Emerging drug-free wound treatments are important for convenient, effective, and safe treatment strategies. However, the current approaches cannot fully promote tissue regeneration or prevent bacterial infections. Here, the efficacy of a negatively charged fiber dressing in promoting diabetic chronic wound healing is investigated. The negatively charged fiber dressing can generate reactive oxygen species to inhibit bacterial reproduction with the assistance of ultrasound during the inflammatory phase. Furthermore, the dressing provides an electrostatic field that regulates cellular behavior during the inflammatory and proliferative phases. In particular, the dressing can promote fibroblast migration and induce macrophage polarization and neovascularization without any additional drugs. It is demonstrated that this strategy enables the healing of diabetic chronic wounds in a mouse model, achieving effective wound closure over a 12-day treatment cycle and providing a drug-free therapeutic strategy for diabetic chronic wound care.

Optimized strategies of ROS-based nanodynamic therapies for tumor theranostics

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in regulating the metabolism of tumor growth, metastasis, death and other biological processes. ROS-based nanodynamic therapies (NDTs) are becoming attractive due to non-invasive, low side effects and tumor-specific advantages. NDTs have rapidly developed into numerous branches, such as photodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy and so on. However, the complexity of the tumor microenvironment and the limitations of existing sensitizers have greatly restricted the therapeutic effects of NDTs, which heavily rely on ROS levels. To address the limitations of NDTs, various strategies have been developed to increase ROS yield, which is an urgent aspect for the positive development of NDTs. In this review, the nanodynamic potentiation strategies in terms of unique properties and universalities of NDTs are comprehensively outlined. We mainly summarize the current dilemmas faced by each NDT and the respective solutions. Meanwhile, the NDTs universalities-based potentiation strategies and NDTs-based combined treatments are elaborated. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the key issues and challenges faced in the development and clinical transformation of NDTs.

Insights on enhancing piezocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6@PDA homojunction from phase coexistence and electron transfer mediators

Piezocatalytic technology with controllable generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is emerging in wastewater treatment. This study employed the synergetic regulation of functional surface and phase interface modification to effectively accelerate redox reaction in piezocatalytic process. We anchored the conductive polydopamine (PDA) onto Bi2WO6 (BWO) using template method, in which a small amount of Bi precipitation to induce partial phase transition of BWO from tetragonal to orthorhombic (t/o) in virtue of simple calcination. ROS traceability studies have identified the synergistic relationship between charge separation and transfer. Polarization in two-phase coexistence is intimately modulated by the orthorhombic relative central cation displacement. The orthorhombic phase with large electric dipole moment significantly promotes the generation of piezoresistive effect of intrinsic tetragonal BWO and optimizes the charge distribution. PDA further overcomes the obstruction of carrier migration at the phases interface to accelerate the generation rate of free radicals. Consequently, the superior rhodamine B (RhB) piezocatalytic degradation rate of 0.10 and 0.32 min-1 were delivered by t/o-BWO and t/o-BWO@PDA, respectively. This work reveals a feasible polarization enhancement strategy for the phase coexistence, and flexibly introduces the in-situ synthesized economical polymer conductive unit into the piezocatalysts.

An Emerging Family of Piezocatalysts: 2D Piezoelectric Materials

Piezocatalysis is an emerging technique that holds great promise for the conversion of ubiquitous mechanical energy into electrochemical energy through piezoelectric effect. However, mechanical energies in natural environment (such as wind energy, water flow energy, and noise) are typically tiny, scattered, and featured with low frequency and low power. Therefore, a high response to these tiny mechanical energies is critical to achieving high piezocatalytic performance. In comparison to nanoparticles or 1D piezoelectric materials, 2D piezoelectric materials possess characteristics such as high flexibility, easy deformation, large surface area, and rich active sites, showing more promise in future for practical applications. In this review, state-of-the-art research progresses on 2D piezoelectric materials and their applications in piezocatalysis are provided. First, a detailed description of 2D piezoelectric materials are offered. Then a comprehensive summary of the piezocatalysis technique is presented and examines the piezocatalysis applications of 2D piezoelectric materials in various fields, including environmental remediation, small-molecule catalysis, and biomedicine. Finally, the main challenges and prospects of 2D piezoelectric materials and their applications in piezocatalysis are discussed. It is expected that this review can fuel the practical application of 2D piezoelectric materials in piezocatalysis.

Polar electric field-modulated peroxymonosulfate selective activation for removal of organic contaminants via non-radical electron transfer process

Nonradical electron transfer process (ETP) in peroxomonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is regarded promising for selective degradation of organic contaminants in water, however, the subjective modulation strategy and the definitive mechanistic elucidation of ETP are still lacking. Herein, we proposed a heretofore unreported yet efficient ETP indution approach by construction of polar electrical field on biochar via nonmetallic elements co-doping. Physicochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the electronegativity difference among boron, nitrogen, and sulfur elements bestowed robust local electric fields on biochar surface (BC-BNS), which effectively enhanced the adsorption complexation and charge transfer between biochar and PMS. Compared to the other single-doped or co-doped biochar, BC-BNS exhibited superior catalytic performance of PMS activation for degradation of atrazine (ATZ) (kobs=0.036 min-1), as well as various kinds of electron-rich organics. The remarkable catalytic degradation capacity was further verified in various aqueous matrices and background factors, representing the excellent selectivity. Analysis of contribution from reactive oxygen species and electrochemical testing together substantiated the role of polar electric fields in facilitating the modulation from singlet oxygen (1O2) to ETP as a prevailing mechanism. DFT calculations and apparent interactions revealed the dissociation of S-O bond was thermodynamically favored within this potent localized electric field, which further induced the cleavage of OO bond and ultimately promoted the dual electron transfer between ATZ and PMS. The superiority of BC-BNS/PMS system was further validated with the low ecotoxicity caused by enhanced dechlorination, the low energy consumption, and the long-term effectiveness. The novel modulation principle and atomic-level mechanism exploration gave suggestions for advancing ETP-dominated AOP to remove recalcitrant contaminants during water treatment and restoration.

Advances in Bioresorbable Triboelectric Nanogenerators

With the growing demand for next-generation health care, the integration of electronic components into implantable medical devices (IMDs) has become a vital factor in achieving sophisticated healthcare functionalities such as electrophysiological monitoring and electroceuticals worldwide. However, these devices confront technological challenges concerning a noninvasive power supply and biosafe device removal. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensure continuous operation and patient comfort and minimize the physical and economic burden on the patient and the healthcare system. This Review highlights the promising capabilities of bioresorbable triboelectric nanogenerators (B-TENGs) as temporary self-clearing power sources and self-powered IMDs. First, we present an overview of and progress in bioresorbable triboelectric energy harvesting devices, focusing on their working principles, materials development, and biodegradation mechanisms. Next, we examine the current state of on-demand transient implants and their biomedical applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and future perspectives of B-TENGs, aimed at expanding their technological scope and developing innovative solutions. This Review discusses advancements in materials science, chemistry, and microfabrication that can advance the scope of energy solutions available for IMDs. These innovations can potentially change the current health paradigm, contribute to enhanced longevity, and reshape the healthcare landscape soon.

Reactive oxygen species for therapeutic application: Role of piezoelectric materials

This perspective article emphasizes the significant role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in in vivo remedial therapy of various diseases and complications, capitalizing on their potential reactivity. Among the various influencers, herein, piezoelectric materials driven ROS generation activity is primarily considered. Intrinsic non-centrosymmetry of piezoelectric materials makes them suitable for distinct dipole formation in the presence of external mechanical stimuli. Such characteristics prompt the positioning of opposite charged carriers to execute associated redox transformations that effectively participate to generate ROS in the aqueous media of the cell cytoplasm, organelles and nucleus. The immense reactivity of piezoelectric material driven ROS is fostered to terminate cellular toxicity or curtail tumor cell growth, due to their higher specificity. This perspective considers the conjugated performance of piezoelectric materials and ultrasound which can remotely generate electrical charges that promote ROS production for therapeutic application. In particular, a substantial synopsis is provided for the remedial activity of numerous piezocatalytic materials in tumor cell apoptosis, antibacterial treatment, dental care and neurological disorders. Subsequently, the report precisely demonstrates the methods involving various spectrophotometric approaches for the analysis of the ROS. Finally, the key challenges of piezoelectric material-based therapy are discussed and systematic future progress is outlined.

Sonocatalytic In Situ Induced Oxygen Storm Precision Enhanced Reactive Oxygen Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer

Deep‐buried tissue, extremely hypoxic blood supply, and complex tumor microenvironment are considered to be the hardest difficult barriers to the accurate treatment of pancreatic cancer. Herein, a novel Au@Co3O4 (AC)‐polyvinylpyrrolidone (AC‐PVP) sonocatalytic agent and radiation sensitizer with a multicore–shell structure are synthesized by a mild reduction method for reshaping the special physiological environment of pancreatic cancer. Oxygen storms can be generated under ultrasonic activation by in situ catalyzed H2O2 in tumor tissue. The oxygen storm improves the ability to produce superoxide anions by sonodynamic therapy as well as rapidly supplements the oxygen‐dependent on active oxygen such as auger electrons produced by high‐energy ray ionization during radiotherapy (RT), further enhancing the efficiency of RT. Interestingly, AC‐PVP can reduce the intracellular glutathione (GSH) level, thus preventing the generated reactive oxygen species from being consumed by GSH. More importantly, the glucose oxidase‐like of AC‐PVP can catalyze glucose in tumor tissue to produce H2O2, and continuously provide substrates for sonocatalytic to form self‐cycling oxygen production. This study offers a novel paradigm for achieving in situ precise self‐oxygenation to overcome the special physiological barrier of pancreatic cancer and efficient sonodynamic synergistic radiotherapy.
