Low-dimensional assemblies of metal-organic framework particles and mutually coordinated anisotropy

Coassembly of Complementary Polyhedral Metal-Organic Framework Particles into Binary Ordered Superstructures

Here we report the formation of a 3D NaCl-type binary porous superstructure via coassembly of two colloidal polyhedral metal-organic framework (MOF) particles having complementary sizes, shapes, and charges. We employed a polymeric-attenuated Coulombic self-assembly approach, which also facilitated the coassembly of these MOF particles with spherical polystyrene particles to form 2D binary superstructures. Our results pave the way for using MOFs to create sophisticated superstructures comprising particles of various sizes, shapes, porosities, and chemical compositions.

Physicochemical Methods for the Structuring and Assembly of MOF Crystals

ConspectusMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising for various applications through the creation of innovative materials and assemblies. This potential stems from their modular nature, as diverse metal ions and organic linkers can be combined to produce MOFs with unique chemical properties and lattice structures. Following extensive research on the design and postsynthetic chemical modification of MOF lattices at the molecular level, increasing attention is now focused on the next hierarchical level: controlling the morphology of MOF crystals and their subsequent assembly and positioning to create functional composites.Beyond well-established methods to regulate crystal size and shape through nucleation and coordination modulation, physicochemical techniques leveraging wetting effects, interparticle interactions, and magnetic or electric fields offer attractive avenues for the hierarchical structuring and assembly of MOFs. These techniques facilitate crystal alignment and yield unique superstructures. While our research group primarily focuses on directing MOF crystal orientation and positioning using external stimuli such as magnetic and electric fields, we also explore hierarchical MOF synthesis and structuring using liquid interfaces and depletion force-assisted packing.This account highlights our journey and progress in developing methods to regulate the morphology, assembly, orientation, and positioning of MOF crystals, placed in the context of work by other groups. First, we examine commonly utilized structuring methods for MOF crystals that employ liquid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces to spatially confine reactions, allowing us to access unique morphologies such as mushroom-like crystals and Janus particles. We also discuss strategies for concentrating and packing MOF crystals into superstructures, utilizing fluid interfaces for spatial confinement of crystals, depletion forces, entropic effects, and crystal sedimentation.A particularly compelling challenge in expanding the applicability of MOF materials is how to manipulate free-standing MOF crystals. This issue is especially important because MOFs are typically produced as loose powders, and industrial material processing is generally more efficient when the material is fluidized. While extensive research has been conducted regarding MOF growth on substrates with both positional and orientational control, there is a clear need for similar precision with free-standing MOFs dispersed in a fluid matrix. Our group has thus focused on the relatively new, yet powerful approach of using electric and magnetic fields to manipulate MOF crystals, which offers unprecedented control over the orientation and positioning of dispersed MOF crystals, complementing the more well-established methods of MOF growth on substrates. In this Account, we provide foundational background and discussions on the interactions between these external fields and MOF crystals, including critical considerations for effective MOF manipulation using such techniques. We also discuss their unique advantages and applications, and briefly examine potential application areas, such as photonics, smart materials like soft robotics and absorbents, and sensing. This Account highlights the promising potential of well-organized and aligned MOF crystals over randomly oriented ones in various applications, owing to enhanced selectivity and performance. It underscores the importance of specialized assembly methods to advance materials science and engineering, encouraging the reader to explore such approaches.

Multi-Enzyme Cascade Nanoreactors for High-Throughput Immunoassay: Transitioning Concept in Lab to Application in Community

In this work, we reported a cholesterol oxidase (Chox)-loaded platinum (Pt) nanozyme with the collaborative cascade nanoreactor for the construction of nanozyme-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (N-ELSA) models to realize high-throughput rapid evaluation of cancer markers. Considering the high specific surface area and manipulable surface sites, ZIF-8 was used as a substrate for natural enzyme and nanozyme loading. The constructed ZIF-8-Pt nanozyme platform exhibited efficient enzyme-like catalytic efficiency with a standard corrected activity of 60.59 U mg-1, which was 12 times higher than that of the ZIF-8 precursor, and highly efficient photothermal conversion efficiency (∼35.49%). In N-ELISA testing, developed multienzyme photothermal probes were immobilized in microplates based on antigen-antibody-specific reactions. Cholesterol was reacted in a cascade to reactive oxygen radicals, which attacked 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, causing it to oxidize and color change, thus exhibiting highly enhanced efficient photothermal properties. Systematic temperature evaluations were performed by a hand-held microelectromechanical system thermal imager under the excitation of an 808 nm surface light source to determine the cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) profiles in the samples. Encouragingly, the temperature signal from the microwells increased with increasing CA15-3, with a linear range of 2 mU mL-1 to 100 U mL-1, considering it to be the sensor with the widest working range for visualization and portability available. This work provides new horizons for the development of efficient multienzyme portable colorimetric-photothermal platforms to help advance the community-based process of early cancer detection.

Two-dimensional photonic crystal sensor enabled by hydrophobic hydrogen-bonded organic Frameworks@Metal-Organic frameworks for trace nerve agents detection

The development of fast and accurate sensors for nerve agents holds immense significance for homeland security and public health. However, the humidity interference from ambient environments and poor sensitivity for trace nerve agents are largely unsolved problems. To overcome the problems, a humidity-independent two-dimensional photonic crystal (2-D PC) sensor is developed by exploiting UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC with excellent sensitivity coupled to a hydrophobic hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOFs) for detection sarin simulant dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP). Selective sensing results show that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC sensor presents the outstanding DMMP specificity, and the limit of detection (LOD) for DMMP response of the sensor can reach 508 ± 68 ppb at room temperature. Water-resistant experiments demonstrate that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC sensor shows excellent stability even under 80% relative humidity (RH). Moreover, the sensor also exhibits a rapid response/recovery time of 1 s/3 s and can maintain excellent sensing performance under heat-treatment of 200 °C and in the long-term storage (30 days). The adsorption kinetics and the hydrogen bond interaction are conducted to elucidate the mechanism of enhanced sensing DMMP properties. These results indicate the potential application of the sensor in the trace nerve agent's detection, especially in humidity environment.

Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Enhancement of the Aligned Metal-Organic Framework under Water Vapor Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit high adsorption and catalytic activities for various gas species. Because gas adsorption can cause a temperature increase in the MOF, which decreases the capacity and adsorption rate, a strict evaluation of its effect on the thermal conductivity of MOFs is essential. In this study, the thermal conductivity measurement of the MOF under water vapor adsorption was performed using an oriented film of copper tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) MOF. A recently developed bidirectional 3ω method enabled the anisotropic thermal conductivity measurement of layered Cu-TCPP while maintaining its ordered structure. The water adsorption was found to increase the thermal conductivity in both in-plane and cross-plane directions with different trends and magnitudes, owing to the structural anisotropy. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that additional vibrational modes provided by the adsorbed water molecules were the reason for the thermal conductivity enhancement.

Layered (AlO)2OH·VO3 composite superstructures for ultralong lifespan aqueous zinc-ion batteries

The unique superstructures electrode materials are of dominant significance for improving the performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this work, using nano MIL-96 (Al) as the precursor, a series of the layered (AlO)2OH·VO3 composite superstructures with different morphologies and V-oxide contents were prepared by combining calcination and hydrothermal synthesis. Among which, the HBC650·V4 superstructure is composed of the amorphous Al2O3/C, V-oxide, and the fluffy structure of (AlO)2OH, thus the superstructure can enhance the stability, increase the active center, and shorten Zn2+ diffusion, respectively. It is commendable that, the HBC650·V4 superstructure exhibits a high specific capacity of 180.1 mAh·g-1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A·g-1. Furthermore, the capacity retention can be as high as 99.6 % after 5000 cycles at a high current density of 5.0 A·g-1, showing superior long cycling stability. Importantly, the in-situ XRD patterns and ex-situ analysis revealed the structural changes and reaction mechanisms of the HBC650·V4 superstructure during Zn2+ insertion/extraction. Therefore, the HBC650·V4 superstructure prepared using Al-MOF exhibits the advanced AZIBs performance. The preparation of nano-MOF into multifunctional superstructures through innovative strategies will be development trend in this field, which opens a new way to design AZIBs cathode materials.

Metal-organic framework photonic crystals with bidisperse particles-based brilliant structural colors and high optical transparency for elaborate anti-counterfeiting

Photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted great interest and wide applications in displays, printing, anti-counterfeiting, etc. However, two main challenges significantly hinder their applications: 1) the tradeoff between high optical transparency across the whole visible range and brilliant colors requiring a large refractive index contrast (Δn), and 2) the way of regulating structural colors by altering tens of different sizes. To address these issues, a new type of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based transparent photonic crystal (TPC) has been fabricated through self-assembling MOF particles into three-dimensional ordered structures which were then infiltrated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Compared to conventional PCs, these TPCs exhibit 1) both brilliant forward iridescent structural colors and high transmittance (>75 %) across the whole visible spectra range, and 2) conveniently adjustable colors based on bidisperse particles. The unique color-generating mechanism of the light diffraction by each plane lattice and the small Δn between MOF particles and PDMS are the keys to TPCs' characteristics. Moreover, the prepared invisible anti-counterfeit labels can reversibly hide-reveal patterns with elaborate and exchangeable color contrast in a non-destructive way, showing potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and optical devices.

Colloidal Self-Assembly: From Passive to Active Systems

Self-assembly fundamentally implies the organization of small sub-units into large structures or patterns without the intervention of specific local interactions. This process is commonly observed in nature, occurring at various scales ranging from atomic/molecular assembly to the formation of complex biological structures. Colloidal particles may serve as micrometer-scale surrogates for studying assembly, particularly for the poorly understood kinetic and dynamic processes at the atomic scale. Recent advances in colloidal self-assembly have enabled the programmable creation of novel materials with tailored properties. We here provide an overview and comparison of both passive and active colloidal self-assembly, with a discussion on the energy landscape and interactions governing both types. In the realm of passive colloidal assembly, many impressive and important structures have been realized, including colloidal molecules, one-dimensional chains, two-dimensional lattices, and three-dimensional crystals. In contrast, active colloidal self-assembly, driven by optical, electric, chemical, or other fields, involves more intricate dynamic processes, offering more flexibility and potential new applications. A comparative analysis underscores the critical distinctions between passive and active colloidal assemblies, highlighting the unique collective behaviors emerging in active systems. These behaviors encompass collective motion, motility-induced phase segregation, and exotic properties arising from out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics. Through this comparison, we aim to identify the future opportunities in active assembly research, which may suggest new application domains.

Fabrication of Oriented Polycrystalline MOF Superstructures

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has progressed beyond the design and exploration of powdery and single-crystalline materials. A current challenge is the fabrication of organized superstructures that can harness the directional properties of the individual constituent MOF crystals. To date, the progress in the fabrication methods of polycrystalline MOF superstructures has led to close-packed structures with defined crystalline orientation. By controlling the crystalline orientation, the MOF pore channels of the constituent crystals can be aligned along specific directions: these systems possess anisotropic properties including enhanced diffusion along specific directions, preferential orientation of guest species, and protection of functional guests. In this perspective, we discuss the current status of MOF research in the fabrication of oriented polycrystalline superstructures focusing on the specific crystalline directions of orientation. Three methods are examined in detail: the assembly from colloidal MOF solutions, the use of external fields for the alignment of MOF particles, and the heteroepitaxial ceramic-to-MOF growth. This perspective aims at promoting the progress of this field of research and inspiring the development of new protocols for the preparation of MOF systems with oriented pore channels, to enable advanced MOF-based devices with anisotropic properties.

Recent progress in functional metal-organic frameworks for bio-medical application

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a high specific surface area, adjustable pores and can be used to obtain functional porous materials with diverse and well-ordered structures through coordination and self-assembly, which has intrigued wide interest in a broad range of disciplines. In the arena of biomedical engineering, the functionalized modification of MOFs has produced drug carriers with excellent dispersion and functionalities such as target delivery and response release, with promising applications in bio-detection, disease therapy, tissue healing, and other areas. This review summarizes the present state of research on the functionalization of MOFs by physical binding or chemical cross-linking of small molecules, polymers, biomacromolecules, and hydrogels and evaluates the role and approach of MOFs functionalization in boosting the reactivity of materials. On this basis, research on the application of functionalized MOFs composites in biomedical engineering fields such as drug delivery, tissue repair, disease treatment, bio-detection and imaging is surveyed, and the development trend and application prospects of functionalized MOFs as an important new class of biomedical materials in the biomedical field are anticipated, which may provide some inspiration and reference for further development of MOF for bio-medical applications.

Janus particles with tunable patch symmetry and their assembly into chiral colloidal clusters

Janus particles, which have an attractive patch on the otherwise repulsive surface, have been commonly employed for anisotropic colloidal assembly. While current methods of particle synthesis allow for control over the patch size, they are generally limited to producing dome-shaped patches with a high symmetry (C∞). Here, we report on the synthesis of Janus particles with patches of various tunable shapes, having reduced symmetries ranging from C2v to C3v and C4v. The Janus particles are synthesized by partial encapsulation of an octahedral metal-organic framework particle (UiO-66) in a polymer matrix. The extent of encapsulation is precisely regulated by a stepwise, asymmetric dewetting process that exposes selected facets of the UiO-66 particle. With depletion interaction, the Janus particles spontaneously assemble into colloidal clusters reflecting the particles' shapes and patch symmetries. We observe the formation of chiral structures, whereby chirality emerges from achiral building blocks. With the ability to encode symmetry and directional bonding information, our strategy could give access to more complex colloidal superstructures through assembly.

Facet-controlled assembly for organizing metal-organic framework particles into extended structures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials characterized by their high porosity and chemical tailorability. To realize the full potential of synthesized MOFs, it is important to transform them from crystalline solid powders into materials with integrated morphologies and properties. One promising approach is facet-controlled assembly, which involves arranging individual crystalline MOF particles into ordered macroscale structures by carefully controlling the interactions between particles. The resulting assembled MOF structures maintain the characteristics of individual particles while also exhibiting improved properties overall. In this article, we emphasize the essential concepts of MOF assembly, highlighting the impact of building blocks, surface interactions, and Gibbs free energy on the assembly process. We systematically examine three methods of guiding facet-controlled MOF assembly, including spontaneous assembly, assembly guided by external forces, and assembly through surface modifications. Lastly, we offer outlooks on future advancements in the fabrication of MOF-based material and potential application exploration.

Understanding and controlling the nucleation and growth of metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks offer a diverse landscape of building blocks to design high performance materials for implications in almost every major industry. With this diversity stems complex crystallization mechanisms with various pathways and intermediates. Crystallization studies have been key to the advancement of countless biological and synthetic systems, with MOFs being no exception. This review provides an overview of the current theories and fundamental chemistry used to decipher MOF crystallization. We then discuss how intrinsic and extrinsic synthetic parameters can be used as tools to modulate the crystallization pathway to produce MOF crystals with finely tuned physical and chemical properties. Experimental and computational methods are provided to guide the probing of MOF crystal formation on the molecular and bulk scale. Lastly, we summarize the recent major advances in the field and our outlook on the exciting future of MOF crystallization.

Construction of Quasi-Ordered Metal-Organic Frameworks Superstructures via Colloidal Assembly of Anisotropic Particles for Selective Organic Vapor Sensing

Colloidal assembly of anisotropic particles holds great promise for achieving diverse packing geometries and unique photonic properties. One intriguing candidate for anisotropic self-assembly is colloidal metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which possess remarkable characteristics including substantial surface areas, tunable chemical properties, a wide range of structural variations, and diverse polyhedral shapes. In this study, the colloidal assembly of nearly spherical and polyhedral MOFs particles to form quasi-ordered photonic superstructures was investigated. Specifically, monodisperse near-spherical ZIF-8 (NSZIF-8) and rhombic dodecahedron ZIF-8 (RDZIF-8) colloidal nanoparticles were synthesized as the fundamental building blocks. These nanoparticles are employed to construct MOFs-based self-assembled superstructures that exhibit thin-film interference optical properties. Importantly, these superstructures demonstrate exceptional responsiveness to gaseous homologues and isomers with approximate refractive indices. The dynamic reflection spectral patterns exhibited by these superstructures provide valuable insights into the diffusion rates and surface tension characteristics of the target solvents. These findings underscore the potential of MOFs-based superstructure thin films to discriminate between physiochemically similar solvents, opening new avenues for applications in various fields.

Application of colloidal photonic crystals in study of organoids

As alternative disease models, other than 2D cell lines and patient-derived xenografts, organoids have preferable in vivo physiological relevance. However, both endogenous and exogenous limitations impede the development and clinical translation of these organoids. Fortunately, colloidal photonic crystals (PCs), which benefit from favorable biocompatibility, brilliant optical manipulation, and facile chemical decoration, have been applied to the engineering of organoids and have achieved the desirable recapitulation of the ECM niche, well-defined geometrical onsets for initial culture, in situ multiphysiological parameter monitoring, single-cell biomechanical sensing, and high-throughput drug screening with versatile functional readouts. Herein, we review the latest progress in engineering organoids fabricated from colloidal PCs and provide inputs for future research.

Confined Synthesis of Amorphous Al2 O3 Framework Nanocomposites Based on the Oxygen-Potential Diagram as Sulfur Hosts for Catalytic Conversion

Sulfur cathodes in Li-S batteries suffer significant volumetric expansion and lack of catalytic activity for polysulfide conversion. In this study, a confined self-reduction synthetic route is developed for preparing nanocomposites using diverse metal ions (Mn2+ , Co2+ , Ni2+ , and Zn2+ )-introduced Al-MIL-96 as precursors. The Ni2+ -introduced Al-MIL-96-derived nanocomposite contains a "hardness unit", amorphous aluminum oxide framework, to restrain the volumetric expansion, and a "softness unit", Ni nanocrystals, to improve the catalytic activity. The oxygen-potential diagram theoretically explains why Ni2+ is preferentially reduced. Postmortem microstructure characterization confirms the suppressive volume expansion. The in situ ultraviolet-visible measurements are performed to probe the catalytic activity of polysulfide conversion. This study provides a new perspective for designing nanocomposites with "hardness units" and "softness units" as sulfur or other catalyst hosts.

Biomimetic thermoresponsive superstructures by colloidal soft-and-hard co-assembly

Soft-and-hard hybrid structures are ubiquitous in biological systems and have inspired the design of man-made mechanical devices, actuators, and robots. The realization of these structures, however, has been challenging at microscale, where material integration and actuation become exceedingly less practical. Here, through simple colloidal assembly, we create microscale superstructures consisting of soft and hard materials, which, serving as microactuators, have thermoresponsive shape-transforming properties. In this case, anisotropic metal-organic framework (MOF) particles as the hard components are integrated with liquid droplets, forming spine-mimicking colloidal chains via valence-limited assembly. The chains, with alternating soft and hard segments, are referred to as MicroSpine and can reversibly change shape, switching between straight and curved states through a thermoresponsive swelling/deswelling mechanism. By solidification of the liquid parts within a chain with prescribed patterns, we design various chain morphologies, such as "colloidal arms," with controlled actuating behaviors. The chains are further used to build colloidal capsules, which encapsulate and release guests by the temperature-programmed actuation.

Moisture-enhanced trace chloroalkanes detection in bimetallic metal-organic frameworks 3-dimensional photonic crystal

Chloroalkanes have long been a threat to environmental protection and human health, however, rapid and efficient detection of chloroalkanes remains challenging. Herein, 3-dimensional photonics crystals (3-D PCs) based on bimetallic materials of institute lavoisier frameworks-127 (MIL-127, Fe₂M, M = Fe, Ni, Co, Zn) demonstrate the great potential of chloroalkanes sensing. Particularly, at temperature of 25 °C and dry conditions, the 3-D PC consisting of MIL-127 (Fe₂Co) shows optimal selectivity and high concentration sensitivity of 0.0351 ± 0.00007 nm ppm^-1 to carbon tetra-chloride (CCl₄), and the limit of detection (LOD) can reach 2.85 ± 0.01 ppm. Meanwhile, MIL-127 (Fe₂Co) 3-D PC sensor presents a rapid response of 1 s and recovery time of 4.5 s for CCl₄ vapor, and can maintain excellent sensing performance under heat-treatment of 200 °C or in the long-term storage (30 days). Mechanism studies indicated that the excellent sensing property derived from the doping of transition metals. Moreover, the moisture-enhanced adsorption of CCl₄ for the MIL-127 (Fe₂Co) 3-D PC sensor is also observed. H₂O molecule can remarkably enhance the adsorption of MIL-127 (Fe₂Co) to CCl₄. The MIL-127 (Fe₂Co) 3-D PC sensor shows the highest concentration sensitivity of 0.146 ± 0.00082 nm ppm^-1 to CCl₄ and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) of 685 ± 4 ppb under the pre-adsorption of 75 ppm H₂O. Our results provide an insight for a trace gas detection using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the optical sensing field.

Self-assembly of colloidal metal-organic framework (MOF) particles

Self-assembly of colloidal particles into ordered superstructures enables the development of novel advanced materials for diverse applications such as photonics, electronics, sensing, energy conversion, energy storage, diagnosis, drug or gene delivery, and catalysis. Recently, polyhedral metal-organic framework (MOF) particles have been proposed as promising colloidal particles to form ordered superstructures, based on their colloidal stability, size-tunability, rich polyhedral shapes, porosity and multifunctionality. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of strategies for the self-assembly of colloidal MOF particles into ordered superstructures of different dimensionalities, highlighting some of their properties and applications, and sharing thoughts on the self-assembly of MOF particles.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gas Applications

Using petrol to supply energy for a car or burning coal to heat a building generates plenty of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂ ), water vapor (H₂ O), methane (CH₄ ), nitrous oxide (N₂ O), ozone (O₃ ), fluorinated gases. These up-and-coming metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally endowed with rigid inorganic nodes and versatile organic linkers, which have been extensively used in the GHG-related applications to improve the lives and protect the environment. Porous MOF materials and their derivatives have been demonstrated to be competitive and promising candidates for GHG separation, storage and conversions as they shows facile preparation, large porosity, adjustable nanostructure, abundant topology, and tunable physicochemical property. Enormous progress has been made in GHG storage and separation intrinsically stemmed from the different interaction between guest molecule and host framework from MOF itself in the recent five years. Meanwhile, the use of porous MOF materials to transform GHG and the influence of external conditions on the adsorption performance of MOFs for GHG are also enclosed. In this review, it is also highlighted that the existing challenges and future directions are discussed and envisioned in the rational design, facile synthesis and comprehensive utilization of MOFs and their derivatives for practical applications.

Effects of Size and Shape on the Tolerances for Misalignment and Probabilities for Successful Oriented Attachment of Nanoparticles

Oriented attachment (OA) of nanoparticles is an important pathway of crystal growth, but there is a lack of tools to model OA. Here, we present several simple models that relate the probability of achieving OA to basic geometric parameters, such as particle size, shape, and lattice periodicity. A Moiré-domain model is applied to understand twist misorientations between parallel surfaces, and it predicts that the range of twist angles yielding perfect OA is inversely related to the width of the contact area. This idea is explored further through a surface functional model, which investigates how patterns of crystallographic registration can drive the emergence of complex orientational energy landscapes. The energy landscapes are predicted to possess multiple local minima that can trap particles in imperfect alignments, and these local minima become deeper and more numerous as the contact area increases, which makes OA more challenging for large particles. A second set of models is presented to understand the sequence of events by which two crystallographic faces become coplanar after the collision. We use a central force approximation to predict the odds that two particle faces will attain coalignment when the particles collide with random misalignments, and we show that in the absence of special biasing forces, the probability of attaining alignment on a given face is roughly proportional to its solid angle as viewed from the center of the particle. The model thus predicts that OA is most favorable between well-faceted particles and becomes exceedingly unlikely for large spherical particles that express many microfacets.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colloidal Particle Synthesis, Assembly, and Application

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from metal nodes and organic ligands have received significant attention over the past two decades for their fascinating porous properties and broad applications. Colloidal MOFs (CMOFs) not only inherit the intrinsic properties of MOFs, but can also serve as building blocks for self-assembly to make functional materials. Compared to bulk MOFs, the colloidal size of CMOFs facilitates further manipulation of CMOF particles in a single or collective state in a liquid medium. The resulting crystalline order obtained by self-assembly in position and orientation can effectively improve performance. In this review, we summarize the latest developments of CMOFs in synthesis strategies, self-assembly methods, and related applications. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities of CMOFs in synthesis and assembly, by which we hope that CMOFs can be further developed into new areas for a wider range of applications.

A Visible Light-Induced and ROS-Dependent Method for the Rapid Formation of a MOF Composite Membrane with Antibacterial Properties

The diverse application potential of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are currently limited by their challenging and complicated preparation processes. In this study, we successfully developed a novel strategy for the rapid synthesis of a sustainable MOF composite membrane under neutral conditions with improved physicochemical and antibacterial properties. Our reaction pipeline comprised visible light that induced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from ZIF-8 particles, which facilitated the rapid oxidative polymerization of dopamine to polydopamine. The physicochemical properties of the composite membrane were assessed using imaging methods, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption; its antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were measured using optical densitometry. The bactericidal potency of the synthesized membrane was >99% against all tested strains under the conditions of simulated sunlight. Moreover, the composite membrane retained its structural integrity and antibacterial effect after multiple cycles of use and recovery, showcasing remarkable stability. Overall, this study displays a ROS-mediated method for the rapid preparation of sustainable MOF composite membranes under neutral conditions with optimal physicochemical characteristics, antibacterial properties, and performance. Our study provides insights into the use of membrane materials as design platforms for a range of diverse practical applications.

Light-Activated Colloidal Micromotors with Synthetically Tunable Shapes and Shape-Directed Propulsion

Controlling the propulsion modes of colloidal micromotors, from translational to spinning and helical motion, expands the versatility of their potential applications in microrobotics and micromachinery. Engineering colloidal shapes with designed asymmetry can regulate their propulsion behaviors, yet current methods rely on complicated and costly fabrication processes such as lithography. Herein, we present a solution-based synthesis of light-activated colloidal motors adopting straight and various tunable bent geometries, which feature controlled asymmetry and allow shape-directed propulsions. The keys for our strategy are the synthesis of bent silica rods with a tailored bending position and degree, together with the site-specific installation of a photoactive engine. Upon light illumination, the resulting particles propel autonomously, whereby their shape information is translated to various propulsion modes including linear locomotion, steering, and spinning. This low-cost, scalable method for fabricating micromotors with a high degree of control of shapes could promote study in microscale actuation, in active assembly, and eventually for fabrication of colloidal functional materials.

A UiO-66 3D photonic crystal optical sensor for highly efficient chlorobenzene vapor detection

Chlorobenzene (C₆H₅Cl) is a flammable liquid with high vapor activity, which is a severe threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is essential to develop a highly efficient sensor to detect C₆H₅Cl vapor. Herein, we developed a UiO-66 three-dimensional photonic crystal (3D PC) optical sensor and investigated its sensing properties toward the C₆H₅Cl vapor. The UiO-66 3D PCs optical sensor shows a high sensitivity of C₆H₅Cl vapor, in the concentrations range of 0-500 ppm, the reflectance intensity response to be 0.06% ppm with a good linear relationship, detection limit can reach 1.64 ppm and the quality factor is 10.8. Additionally, the UiO-66 3D PC optical sensor demonstrated great selectivity with the values of selectivity (S) varying from 2.24 to 10.65 for the C₆H₅Cl vapor as compared with carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄), dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂), 1,1,2-trichloroethane (C₂H₃Cl₃), benzene (C₆H₆), deionized water (H₂O), ethanol (C₂H₅OH) and methyl alcohol (CH₃OH) vapors. Moreover, the UiO-66 3D PC optical sensor shows an ultrafast optical response time and recovery times of 0.5 s and 0.45 s with exceptional stability and repeatability to 500 ppm C₆H₅Cl vapor. These excellent sensing properties are attributed to the efficacy of signal transduction, increased porosity and gas adsorption sites, which are intrinsically endowed by the design of the 3D optical structure. The design and fabrication of this UiO-66 3D PC optical sensor might open up potential applications for the detection of the C₆H₅Cl vapor.
