Community rescue in experimental phytoplankton communities facing severe herbicide pollution

Connectivity mediates the spatial ecological impacts of a glyphosate-based herbicide in experimental metaecosystems

Metacommunity ecology has shown that connectivity is important for the persistence of a species locally and across connected ecosystems, however we do not know if ecological effects in freshwater ecosystems exposed to biocides leaking from agriculture depend on metaecosystem connectivity. We experimentally replicated metaecosystems in the laboratory using gradostats as a model system. We tested the effects of connectivity, in terms of node distance from the pollutant-source, flow rate, and a glyphosate-based herbicide, on phytoplankton productivity, diversity and stability. Gradostats were composed of interconnected equally spaced nodes where resources and phytoplankton move directionally along a gradient of increasing distance from the source of the polluting herbicide. We hypothesised that ecological effects would be stronger in the node situated closer to the point of herbicide input, but that flow would suppress phytoplankton populations in distant nodes. Overall, RoundUp impacted phytoplankton productivity and stability by reducing algal biomass and abundances. This occurred especially in the node closest to the diluted herbicide point-source and under high flow, where species abundances were heavily suppressed by the effects of the rapidly flowing herbicide. At low flow on the other hand, distant nodes where buffered from the effects of the slow-moving herbicide. No differences in beta and gamma diversity among replicate metaecosystems was found; however, a significant loss of alpha diversity in all metaecosystems occurred through time until the end of the experiment. Together, these results point to the importance of considering aquatic connectivity in management plans for monitoring and mitigating unintended ecological consequences of agrochemical runoff.

Assessing the ecological impact of pesticides/herbicides on algal communities: A comprehensive review

The escalating use of pesticides in agriculture for enhanced crop productivity threatens aquatic ecosystems, jeopardizing environmental integrity and human well-being. Pesticides infiltrate water bodies through runoff, chemical spills, and leachate, adversely affecting algae, vital primary producers in marine ecosystems. The repercussions cascade through higher trophic levels, underscoring the need for a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between pesticides, algae, and the broader ecosystem. Algae, susceptible to pesticides via spillage, runoff, and drift, experience disruptions in community structure and function, with certain species metabolizing and bioaccumulating these contaminants. The toxicological mechanisms vary based on the specific pesticide and algal species involved, particularly evident in herbicides' interference with photosynthetic activity in algae. Despite advancements, gaps persist in comprehending the precise toxic effects and mechanisms affecting algae and non-target species. This review consolidates information on the exposure and toxicity of diverse pesticides and herbicides to aquatic algae, elucidating underlying mechanisms. An emphasis is placed on the complex interactions between pesticides/herbicides, nutrient content, and their toxic effects on algae and microbial species. The variability in the harmful impact of a single pesticide across different algae species underscores the necessity for further research. A holistic approach considering these interactions is imperative to enhance predictions of pesticide effects in marine ecosystems. Continued research in this realm is crucial for a nuanced understanding of the repercussions of pesticides and herbicides on aquatic ecosystems, mainly algae.

Herbicide leakage into seawater impacts primary productivity and zooplankton globally

Predicting the magnitude of herbicide impacts on marine primary productivity remains challenging because the extent of worldwide herbicide pollution in coastal waters and the concentration-response relationships of phytoplankton communities to multiple herbicides are unclear. By analyzing the spatiotemporal distribution of herbicides at 661 bay and gulf stations worldwide from 1990 to 2022, we determined median, third quartile and maximum concentrations of 12 triazine herbicides of 0.18 nmol L-1, 1.27 nmol L-1 and 29.50 nmol L-1 (95%Confidence Interval: CI 1.06, 1.47), respectively. Under current herbicide stress, phytoplankton primary productivity was inhibited by more than 5% at 25% of the sites and by more than 10% at 10% of the sites (95%CI 3.67, 4.34), due to the inhibition of highly abundant sensitive species, community structure/particle size succession (from Bacillariophyta to Dinophyceae and from nano-phytoplankton to micro-phytoplankton), and resulting growth rate reduction. Concurrently, due to food chain cascade effects, the dominant micro-zooplankton population shifted from larger copepod larvae to smaller unicellular ciliates, which might prolong the transmission process in marine food chain and reduce the primary productivity transmission efficiency. As herbicide application rates on farmlands worldwide are correlated with residues in their adjacent seas, a continued future increase in herbicide input may seriously affect the stability of coastal waters.

Towards reducing chemical usage for weed control in agriculture using UAS imagery analysis and computer vision techniques

Currently, applying uniform distribution of chemical herbicide through a sprayer without considering the spatial distribution information of crops and weeds is the most common method of controlling weeds in commercial agricultural production system. This kind of weed management practice lead to excessive amounts of chemical herbicides being applied in a given field. The objective of this study was to perform site-specific weed control (SSWC) in a corn field by: (1) using a unmanned aerial system (UAS) to map the spatial distribution information of weeds in the field; (2) creating a prescription map based on the weed distribution map, and (3) spraying the field using the prescription map and a commercial size sprayer. In this study, we assumed that plants growing outside the corn rows are weeds and they need to be controlled. The first step in implementing such an approach is identifying the corn rows. For that, we are proposing a Crop Row Identification algorithm, a computer vision algorithm that identifies corn rows on UAS imagery. After being identified, the corn rows were then removed from the imagery and remaining vegetation fraction was classified as weeds. Based on that information, a grid-based weed prescription map was created and the weed control application was implemented through a commercial-size sprayer. The decision of spraying herbicides on a particular grid was based on the presence of weeds in that grid cell. All the grids that contained at least one weed were sprayed, while the grids free of weeds were not. Using our SSWC approach, we were able to save 26.2% of the acreage from being sprayed with herbicide compared to the current method. This study presents a full workflow from UAS image collection to field weed control implementation using a commercial size sprayer, and it shows that some level of savings can potentially be obtained even in a situation with high weed infestation, which might provide an opportunity to reduce chemical usage in corn production systems.

Microbiome rescue: directing resilience of environmental microbial communities

Earth's climate crisis threatens to disrupt ecosystem services and destabilize food security. Microbiome management will be a crucial component of a comprehensive strategy to maintain stable microbinal functions for ecosystems and plants in the face of climate change. Microbiome rescue is the directed, community-level recovery of microbial populations and functions lost after an environmental disturbance. Microbiome rescue aims to propel a resilience trajectory for community functions. Rescue can be achieved via demographic, functional, adaptive, or evolutionary recovery of disturbance-sensitive populations. Various ecological mechanisms support rescue, including dispersal, reactivation from dormancy, functional redundancy, plasticity, and diversification, and these mechanisms can interact. Notably, controlling microbial reactivation from dormancy is a potentially fruitful but underexplored target for rescue.

A basic community dynamics experiment: Disentangling deterministic and stochastic processes in structuring ecological communities

Community dynamics are governed by two opposed processes: species sorting, which produces deterministic dynamics leading to an equilibrium state, and ecological drift, which produces stochastic dynamics. Despite a great deal of theoretical and empirical work aiming to demonstrate the predominance of one or the other of these processes, the importance of drift in structuring communities and maintaining species diversity remains contested. Here, we present the results of a basic community dynamics experiment using floating aquatic plants, designed to measure the relative contributions of species sorting and ecological drift to community change over about a dozen generations. We found that species sorting became overwhelmingly dominant as the experiment progressed, and directed communities toward a stable equilibrium state maintained by negative frequency-dependent selection. The dynamics of any particular species depended on how far its initial frequency was from its equilibrium frequency, however, and consequently the balance of sorting and drift varied among species.

Influence of glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid on aquatic plants in different ecological niches

Glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) draw great concern due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems. The individual and combined effects of glyphosate and AMPA on aquatic plants in different ecological niches need to be explored. This study aimed to investigate the ecotoxicity of glyphosate and AMPA on the emergent macrophyte Acorus calamus, phytoplankton Chlorella vulgaris, and submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans after their exposure to glyphosate and AMPA alone and to their mixture. Medium and low concentrations of glyphosate (≤ 0.5 mg L^-1) significantly inhibited the growth of V. natans and promoted the growth of C. vulgaris (P < 0.05) but had no significant effect on the growth of A. calamus (P > 0.05). AMPA (≤ 5.0 mg L^-1) did not significantly influence the relative growth rate (except C. vulgaris) or malonaldehyde levels but significantly altered the expression levels of chlorophyll-related genes and superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] genes in the aquatic plants examined. AMPA mainly affected the oxidative phosphorylation pathway in V. natans and not those in other two plants, indicating that V. natans was more sensitive to AMPA-induced oxidative damage. Moreover, antagonistic effects on plant growth were observed when plants were exposed to low concentrations of glyphosate + AMPA (≤ 0.1 + 0.1 mg L^-1). When the concentration of glyphosate + AMPA reached 0.5 + 0.5 and 5.0 + 5.0 mg L^-1, the growth of the submerged macrophyte was additively or synergistically inhibited, but the growth of the emergent macrophyte and phytoplankton was antagonistically inhibited. Our results indicated that both the individual and combined effects of glyphosate and AMPA might alter the vertical structure of shallow lakes and accelerate the conversion of shallow lakes from grass-based to algal-based lakes.

Community reassemblies of eukaryotes, prokaryotes, and viruses in the hexabromocyclododecanes-contaminated microcosms

The microbial community in seriously contaminated environment were not well known. This research investigated the community reassemblies in microcosms made of two distinct mangrove sediments amended with high levels of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs). After eight months of contamination, the transformation of HBCDs yielded various lower brominated products and resulted in acidification (pH ~2). Therefore, the degraders and dehalogenase homologous genes involved in transformation of HBCDs only presented in low abundance to avoid further deterioration of the habitats. Moreover, in these deteriorated habitats, 1344 bacterial, 969 archaeal, 599 eukaryotic (excluded fungi), 187 fungal OTUs, and 10 viral genera, were reduced compared with controls. Specifically, in two groups of microcosms, Zetaproteobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus, Spirochaetes, Bacteroidetes, Euryarchaeota, and Ascomycota, were positively responding taxa to HBCDs. Caloneis (Bacillariophyta) and Ascomycota turned to the dominant eukaryotic and fungal taxa. Most of predominant taxa were related to the contamination of brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Microbial communities were reassembled in divergent and sediment-dependent manner. The long-term contamination of HBCDs leaded to the change of relations between many taxa, included some of the environmental viruses and their known hosts. This research highlight the importance of monitoring the ecological effects around plants producing or processing halogenated compounds.

Change in prey genotype frequency rescues predator from extinction

Indirect evolutionary rescue (IER) is a mechanism where a non-evolving species is saved from extinction in an otherwise lethal environment by evolution in an interacting species. This process has been described in a predator-prey model, where extinction of the predator is prevented by a shift in the frequency of defended towards undefended prey when reduced predator densities lower selection for defended prey. We test here how increased mortality and the initial frequencies of the prey types affect IER. Combining the analysis of model simulations and experiments with rotifers feeding on algae we show IER in the presence of increased predator mortality. We found that IER was dependent on the ability of the prey to evolve as well as on the frequency of the defended prey. High initial frequencies of defended prey resulted in predator extinction despite the possibility for prey evolution, as the increase in undefended prey was delayed too much to allow predator rescue. This frequency dependency for IER was more pronounced for higher predator mortalities. Our findings can help informing the development of conservation and management strategies that consider evolutionary responses in communities to environmental changes.

Anthropogenic impacts on the biodiversity and anti-interference ability of microbial communities in lakes

Lakes are critical for biogeochemical and ecological processes and are sensitive and vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances, but how and to what extent human activities disturb the biodiversity in lakes remain unknown. Here, we showed the microbial diversity in 46 lakes and assessed the influence of 27 anthropogenic factors. We found that the economic level (e.g., per capita gross domestic product) was strongly negatively correlated (r = -0.97) with bacterial diversity but positively correlated (r = 0.17) with fungal diversity in lakes. The composition of the microbial community significantly changed with increasing economic level. Bacteria are more sensitive than fungi to anthropogenic impacts. Expanding the population size and increasing the economic level may promote the development of fungal diversity but inhibit bacterial diversity. Air quality, urbanization and ozone were negatively correlated with bacterial diversity, and fisheries had a negative correlation with fungal diversity. The anti-interference ability of lake microorganisms in the middle economic level zones (45,000-90,000 yuan/person) was stronger than that in high-level (> 90,000 yuan/person) and low-level (> 45,000 yuan/person) economic zones. Overall, our investigation provides national-scale evidence that changes in the microbial diversity in lakes were related to economic levels.

A Glyphosate-Based Herbicide Cross-Selects for Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Bacterioplankton Communities

Agrochemicals often contaminate freshwater bodies, affecting microbial communities that underlie aquatic food webs. For example, the herbicide glyphosate has the potential to indirectly select for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Such cross-selection could occur if the same genes (encoding efflux pumps, for example) confer resistance to both glyphosate and antibiotics. To test for cross-resistance in natural aquatic bacterial communities, we added a glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) to 1,000-liter mesocosms filled with water from a pristine lake. Over 57 days, we tracked changes in bacterial communities with shotgun metagenomic sequencing and annotated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for the presence of known antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), plasmids, and resistance mutations in the enzyme targeted by glyphosate (enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase; EPSPS). We found that high doses of GBH significantly increased ARG frequency and selected for multidrug efflux pumps in particular. The relative abundance of MAGs after a high dose of GBH was predictable based on the number of ARGs in their genomes (17% of variation explained) and, to a lesser extent, by resistance mutations in EPSPS. Together, these results indicate that GBHs can cross-select for antibiotic resistance in natural freshwater bacteria. IMPORTANCE Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) such as Roundup formulations may have the unintended consequence of selecting for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), as demonstrated in previous experiments. However, the effects of GBHs on ARGs remain unknown in natural aquatic communities, which are often contaminated with pesticides from agricultural runoff. Moreover, the resistance provided by ARGs compared to canonical mutations in the glyphosate target enzyme, EPSPS, remains unclear. Here, we performed a freshwater mesocosm experiment showing that a GBH strongly selects for ARGs, particularly multidrug efflux pumps. These selective effects were evident after just a few days, and the ability of bacteria to survive and thrive after GBH stress was predictable by the number of ARGs in their genomes and, to a lesser extent, by mutations in EPSPS. Intensive GBH application may therefore have the unintended consequence of selecting for ARGs in natural freshwater communities.

Rapid evolution generates synergism between multiple stressors: Linking theory and an evolution experiment

Global change encompasses many co-occurring anthropogenic stressors. Understanding the interactions between these multiple stressors, whether they be additive, antagonistic or synergistic, is critical for ecosystem managers when prioritizing which stressors to mitigate in the face of global change. While such interactions between stressors appear prevalent, it remains unclear if and how these interactions change over time, as the majority of multiple-stressor studies rarely span multiple generations of study organisms. Although meta-analyses have reported some intriguing temporal trends in stressor interactions, for example that synergism may take time to emerge, the mechanistic basis for such observations is unknown. In this study, by analysing data from an evolution experiment with the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus (~35 generations and 31,320 observations), we show that adaptation to multiple stressors shifts stressor interactions towards synergism. We show that trade-offs, where populations cannot optimally perform multiple tasks (i.e. adapting to multiple stressors), generate this bias towards synergism. We also show that removal of stressors from evolved populations does not necessarily increase fitness and that there is variation in the evolutionary trajectories of populations that experienced the same stressor regimes. Our results highlight outstanding questions at the interface between evolution and global change biology, and illustrate the importance of considering rapid adaptation when managing or restoring ecosystems subjected to multiple stressors under global change.

Predators mitigate the destabilising effects of heatwaves on multitrophic stream communities

Amidst the global extinction crisis, climate change will expose ecosystems to more frequent and intense extreme climatic events, such as heatwaves. Yet, whether predator species loss-a prevailing characteristic of the extinction crisis-will exacerbate the ecological consequences of extreme climatic events remains largely unknown. Here, we show that the loss of predator species can interact with heatwaves to moderate the compositional stability of ecosystems. We exposed multitrophic stream communities, with and without a dominant predator species, to realistic current and future heatwaves and found that heatwaves destabilised algal communities by homogenising them in space. However, this happened only when the predator was absent. Additional heatwave impacts on multiple aspects of stream communities, including changes to the structure of algal and macroinvertebrate communities, as well as total algal biomass and its temporal variability, were not apparent during heatwaves and emerged only after the heatwaves had passed. Taken together, our results suggest that the ecological consequences of heatwaves can amplify over time as their impacts propagate through biological interaction networks, but the presence of predators can help to buffer such impacts. These findings underscore the importance of conserving trophic structure, and highlight the potential for species extinctions to amplify the effects of climate change and extreme events.

First evaluation of the periphyton recovery after glyphosate exposure

The potential environmental risk of glyphosate has promoted the need for decontamination of glyphosate-polluted water bodies. These treatments should be accompanied by studies of the recovery potential of aquatic communities and ecosystems. We evaluated the potential of freshwater periphyton to recover from glyphosate exposure using microcosms under laboratory conditions. Periphyton developed on artificial substrates was exposed to 0.4 or 4 mg l-1 monoisopropylamine salt of glyphosate (IPA) for 7 days, followed by translocation to herbicide-free water. We sampled the community 1, 2 and 3 weeks after the transfer. Dry weight, ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll a, and periphyton abundances were analysed. The periphyton impacted with the lowest IPA concentration recovered most of the structural parameters within 7 days in clean water, but the taxonomic structure did not entirely recover towards the control structure. Periphyton exposed to 4 mg IPA l-1 could not recover during 21 days in herbicide-free water, reaching values almost four times higher in % of dead diatoms and four times lower in ash-free dry weight concerning the control at the end of the study. Results suggest a long-lasting effect of the herbicide due to the persistence within the community matrix even after translocating periphyton to decontaminated water. We conclude that the exposure concentration modulates the recovery potential of IPA-impacted periphyton. The current research is the first to study the recovery in glyphosate-free water of periphyton exposed to the most commonly used herbicide in the world. Finally, we highlight the need for more studies focused on the recovery potential of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic communities after glyphosate contamination.

Effects of the herbicides metazachlor and flufenacet on phytoplankton communities - A microcosm assay

Agrochemicals are the main pollutants in freshwater ecosystems. Metazachlor and flufenacet are two common herbicides applied in fall (i.e., August-October) to agricultural fields in Northern Germany. High concentrations of these herbicides are often found in adjacent aquatic ecosystems. Phytoplankton are one of the highly susceptible non-targeted aquatic organismal groups for herbicides and effects on phytoplankton may initiate a chain of consequences in meta communities through trophic interactions. Few studies have focused on responses of the phytoplankton community for metazachlor and, no studies have focused on flufenacet. We studied the effects of metazachlor and flufenacet on the phytoplankton community by conducting a microcosm experiment exposing natural fall phytoplankton communities to environmentally realistic concentrations as 0 (control), 0.5, 5 and 50 µg L-1 of metazachlor and flufenacet treatments over a 4-week period. We measured changes in density, composition (i.e., in phyla and species level), taxonomic diversity indices, and functional features of phytoplankton communities as a response to herbicides. A reduction in the density of Chlorophyta species (e.g., Koliella longiseta, Selenastrum bibraianum) and Cyanobacteria species (e.g., Merismopedia tenuissima and Aphanocapsa elegans) was observed in herbicide treatments compared to controls. The phytoplankton community shifted towards a high density of species from Bacillariophyta (e.g., Nitzschia fonticola and Cyclotella meneghiniana), Miozoa (i.e., Peridinium willei), and Euglenozoa (i.e., Trachelomonas volvocina) in herbicide treatments compared to controls. Metazachlor and flufenacet showed significant negative effects on taxonomic diversity indices (e.g., species richness, the Shannon-Wiener index) and functional features (e.g., functional dispersion and redundancy) of the phytoplankton communities, with increasing herbicide concentrations. Our study provides insights into direct, selective, and irrecoverable effects of metazachlor and flufenacet on phytoplankton communities in the short-term. The comprehensive understanding of these effects of environmentally realistic herbicide concentrations on aquatic biota is essential for a sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems in agricultural areas.

Membrane bioreactors for hospital wastewater treatment: recent advancements in membranes and processes

Discharged hospital wastewater contains various pathogenic microorganisms, antibiotic groups, toxic organic compounds, radioactive elements, and ionic pollutants. These contaminants harm the environment and human health causing the spread of disease. Thus, effective treatment of hospital wastewater is an urgent task for sustainable development. Membranes, with controllable porous and nonporous structures, have been rapidly developed for molecular separations. In particular, membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology demonstrated high removal efficiency toward organic compounds and low waste sludge production. To further enhance the separation efficiency and achieve material recovery from hospital waste streams, novel concepts of MBRs and their applications are rapidly evolved through hybridizing novel membranes (non hydrophilic ultrafiltration/microfiltration) into the MBR units (hybrid MBRs) or the MBR as a pretreatment step and integrating other membrane processes as subsequent secondary purification step (integrated MBR-membrane systems). However, there is a lack of reviews on the latest advancement in MBR technologies for hospital wastewater treatment, and analysis on its major challenges and future trends. This review started with an overview of main pollutants in common hospital waste-water, followed by an understanding on the key performance indicators/criteria in MBR membranes (i.e., solute selectivity) and processes (e.g., fouling). Then, an in-depth analysis was provided into the recent development of hybrid MBR and integrated MBR-membrane system concepts, and applications correlated with wastewater sources, with a particular focus on hospital wastewaters. It is anticipated that this review will shed light on the knowledge gaps in the field, highlighting the potential contribution of hybrid MBRs and integrated MBR-membrane systems toward global epidemic prevention.

Species Interactions Limit the Predictability of Community Responses to Environmental Change

AbstractPredicting how ecological communities will respond to environmental change is challenging but highly relevant in this era of global change. Ecologists commonly use current spatial relationships between species and environmental conditions to make predictions about the future. This assumes that species will track conditions by shifting their distributions. However, theory and experimental evidence suggest that species interactions prevent communities from predictably tracking temporal changes in environmental conditions on the basis of current spatial relationships between species and environmental gradients. We tested this hypothesis by assessing the dynamics of protist species in replicated two-patch microcosm landscapes that experienced different regimes of spatial and temporal environmental heterogeneity (light vs. dark). Populations were kept in monocultures or polycultures to assess the effect of species interactions. In monocultures, abundances were predictable on the basis of current environmental conditions, regardless of whether the populations had experienced temporal environmental change. But in polycultures, abundances also depended on the history of the environmental conditions experienced. This suggests that because of species interactions, communities should respond differently to spatial versus temporal environmental changes. Thus, species interactions likely reduce the accuracy of predictions about future communities that are based on current spatial relationships between species and the environment.

Detection of the maximum resistance to the herbicides diuron and glyphosate, and evaluation of its phenotypic cost, in freshwater phytoplankton

One of the most important anthropogenic impacts on freshwater aquatic ecosystems close to intensive agriculture areas is the cumulative increase in herbicide concentrations. The threat is especially relevant for phytoplankton organisms because they have the same physiological targets as the plants for which herbicides have been designed. This led us to explore the evolutionary response of three phytoplanktonic species to increasing concentrations of two herbicides and its consequences in terms of growth and photosynthesis performance. Specifically, we used an experimental ratchet protocol to investigate the differential evolution and the limit of resistance of a cyanobacterium (Microcystis aeruginosa) and two chlorophyceans (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Dictyosphaerium chlorelloides) to two herbicides in worldwide use: glyphosate and diuron. Initially, the growth rate of M. aeruginosa and D. chlorelloides was completely inhibited when they were exposed to a dose of 0.23 ppm diuron or 40 ppm glyphosate, whereas a higher concentration of both herbicides (0.46 ppm diuron or 90 ppm glyphosate) was necessary to abolish C. reinhardtii growth. However, after running a ratchet protocol, the resistance of the three species to both herbicides increased by an adaptation process. M. aeruginosa and D. chlorelloides were able to grow at 1.84 ppm diuron and 80 ppm glyphosate and C. reinhardtii proliferated at twice these concentrations. Herbicide-resistant strains showed lower growth rates than their wild-type counterparts in the absence of herbicides, as well as changes on morphology and differences on photosynthetic pigment content. Besides, herbicide-resistant cells generally showed a lower photosynthetic performance than wild-type strains in the three species. These results indicate that the introduction of both herbicides in freshwater ecosystems could produce a diminution of primary production due to the selection of herbicide-resistant mutants, that would exhibit lower photosynthetic performance than wild-type populations.

Widespread agrochemicals differentially affect zooplankton biomass and community structure

Anthropogenic environmental change is causing habitat deterioration at unprecedented rates in freshwater ecosystems. Despite increasing more rapidly than many other agents of global change, synthetic chemical pollution-including agrochemicals such as pesticides-has received relatively little attention in freshwater community and ecosystem ecology. Determining the combined effects of multiple agrochemicals on complex biological systems remains a major challenge, requiring a cross-field integration of ecology and ecotoxicology. Using a large-scale array of experimental ponds, we investigated the response of zooplankton community properties (biomass, composition, and diversity metrics) to the individual and joint presence of three globally widespread agrochemicals: the herbicide glyphosate, the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid, and nutrient fertilizers. We tracked temporal variation in zooplankton biomass and community structure along single and combined pesticide gradients (each spanning eight levels), under low (mesotrophic) and high (eutrophic) nutrient-enriched conditions, and quantified (1) response threshold concentrations, (2) agrochemical interactions, and (3) community resistance and recovery. We found that the biomass of major zooplankton groups differed in their sensitivity to pesticides: ≥0.3 mg/L glyphosate elicited long-lasting declines in rotifer communities, both pesticides impaired copepods (≥3 µg/L imidacloprid and ≥5.5 mg/L glyphosate), whereas some cladocerans were highly tolerant to pesticide contamination. Strong interactive effects of pesticides were only recorded in ponds treated with the combination of the highest doses. Overall, glyphosate was the most influential driver of aggregate community properties of zooplankton, with biomass and community structure responding rapidly but recovering unequally over time. Total community biomass showed little resistance when first exposed to glyphosate, but rapidly recovered and even increased with glyphosate concentration over time; in contrast, taxon richness decreased in more contaminated ponds but failed to recover. Our results indicate that the biomass of tolerant taxa compensated for the loss of sensitive species after the first exposure, conferring greater community resistance upon a subsequent contamination event; a case of pollution-induced community tolerance in freshwater animals. These findings suggest that zooplankton biomass may be more resilient to agrochemical pollution than community structure; yet all community properties measured in this study were affected at glyphosate concentrations below common water quality guidelines in North America.

Glyphosate-based herbicide exposure affects diatom community development in natural biofilms

Glyphosate herbicide is ubiquitously used in agriculture and weed control. It has now been identified in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, where numerous studies have suggested that it may have both suppressive and stimulatory effects on diverse non-target organisms. We cultured natural biofilms from a hypereutrophic environment to test the effects on periphytic diatoms of exposure to a glyphosate-based herbicide formulation at concentrations from 0 to 10 mg L-1 of active ingredient. There were clear and significant differences between treatments in diatom community structure after the 15-day experiments. Diversity increased more in low glyphosate treatments relative to higher concentrations, and compositional analyses indicated statistically significant differences between glyphosate treatments. The magnitude of change observed was significantly correlated with glyphosate-based herbicide concentration. Our results show that glyphosate-based herbicides have species-selective effects on benthic diatoms that may significantly alter trajectories of community development and therefore may affect benthic habitats and whole ecosystem function.

Resistance, resilience, and functional redundancy of freshwater bacterioplankton communities facing a gradient of agricultural stressors in a mesocosm experiment

Agricultural pollution with fertilizers and pesticides is a common disturbance to freshwater biodiversity. Bacterioplankton communities are at the base of aquatic food webs, but their responses to these potentially interacting stressors are rarely explored. To test the extent of resistance and resilience in bacterioplankton communities faced with agricultural stressors, we exposed freshwater mesocosms to single and combined gradients of two commonly used pesticides: the herbicide glyphosate (0-15 mg/L) and the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid (0-60 μg/L), in high or low nutrient backgrounds. Over the 43-day experiment, we tracked variation in bacterial density with flow cytometry, carbon substrate use with Biolog EcoPlates, and taxonomic diversity and composition with environmental 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We show that only glyphosate (at the highest dose, 15 mg/L), but not imidacloprid, nutrients, or their interactions measurably changed community structure, favouring members of the Proteobacteria including the genus Agrobacterium. However, no change in carbon substrate use was detected throughout, suggesting functional redundancy despite taxonomic changes. We further show that communities are resilient at broad, but not fine taxonomic levels: 24 days after glyphosate application the precise amplicon sequence variants do not return, and tend to be replaced by phylogenetically close taxa. We conclude that high doses of glyphosate - but still within commonly acceptable regulatory guidelines - alter freshwater bacterioplankton by favouring a subset of higher taxonomic units (i.e., genus to phylum) that transiently thrive in the presence of glyphosate. Longer-term impacts of glyphosate at finer taxonomic resolution merit further investigation.

Model Systems in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior: A Call for Diversity in Our Model Systems and Discipline

AbstractEcologists and evolutionary biologists are fascinated by life's variation but also seek to understand phenomena and mechanisms that apply broadly across taxa. Model systems can help us extract generalities from amid all the wondrous diversity, but only if we choose and develop them carefully, use them wisely, and have a range of model systems from which to choose. In this introduction to the Special Feature on Model Systems in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (EEB), we begin by grappling with the question, What is a model system? We then explore where our model systems come from, in terms of the skills and other attributes required to develop them and the historical biases that influence traditional model systems in EEB. We emphasize the importance of communities of scientists in the success of model systems-narrow scientific communities can restrict the model organisms themselves. We also consider how our discipline was built around one type of "model scientist"-a history still reflected in the field. This lack of diversity in EEB is unjust and also narrows the field's perspective, including by restricting the questions asked and talents used to answer them. Increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion will require acting at many levels, including structural changes. Diversity in EEB, in both model systems and the scientists who use them, strengthens our discipline.

Collapse and rescue of evolutionary food webs under global warming

Global warming is severely impacting ecosystems and threatening ecosystem services as well as human well-being. While some species face extinction risk, several studies suggest the possibility that fast evolution may allow species to adapt and survive in spite of environmental changes. We assess how such evolutionary rescue extends to multitrophic communities and whether evolution systematically preserves biodiversity under global warming. More precisely, we expose simulated trophic networks of co-evolving consumers to warming under different evolutionary scenarios, which allows us to assess the effect of evolution on diversity maintenance. We also investigate how the evolution of body mass and feeding preference affects coexistence within a simplified consumer-resource module. Our simulations predict that the long-term diversity loss triggered by warming is considerably higher in scenarios where evolution is slowed down or switched off completely, indicating that eco-evolutionary feedback indeed helps to preserve biodiversity. However, even with fast evolution, food webs still experience vast disruptions in their structure and functioning. Reversing warming may thus not be sufficient to restore previous structures. Our findings highlight how the interaction between evolutionary rescue and changes in trophic structures constrains ecosystem responses to warming with important implications for conservation and management policies.

Evolutionary Rescue Is Mediated by the History of Selection and Dispersal in Diversifying Metacommunities

Rapid evolution can sometimes prevent population extirpation in stressful environments, but the conditions leading to “evolutionary rescue” in metacommunities are unclear. Here we studied the eco-evolutionary response of microbial metacommunities adapting to selection by the antibiotic streptomycin. Our experiment tested how the history of antibiotic selection and contrasting modes of dispersal influenced diversification and subsequent evolutionary rescue in microbial metacommunities undergoing adaptive radiation. We first tracked the change in diversity and density of Pseudomonas fluorescens morphotypes selected on a gradient of antibiotic stress. We then examined the recovery of these metacommunities following abrupt application of a high concentration of streptomycin lethal to the ancestral organisms. We show that dispersal increases diversity within the stressed metacommunities, that exposure to stress alters diversification dynamics, and that community composition, dispersal, and past exposure to stress mediate the speed at which evolutionary rescue occurs, but not the final outcome of recovery in abundance and diversity. These findings extend recent experiments on evolutionary rescue to the case of metacommunities undergoing adaptive diversification, and should motivate new theory on this question. Our findings are also relevant to evolutionary conservation biology and research on antimicrobial resistance.

Validation of a simple ion chromatography method for simultaneous determination of glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid and ions of Public Health concern in water intended for human consumption

The herbicide glyphosate and its main metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) are generally studied in environmental samples in the investigation of contamination of soil, plants, water and food. Many analytical methods are based on liquid chromatography or high-performance liquid chromatography, with pre-column or post-column derivatization; in addition, the chromatograph can be coupled to mass spectrometers for detection and quantification. Gas chromatography and spectroscopic and electrochemical methods have also been used. In this work, a simple low-cost method is presented for the analysis of water intended for human consumption with the quantification not only of glyphosate and AMPA, but also of other ions of interest to public health (fluoride, chlorite, bromate, chloride, nitrite, nitrate, sulfate and phosphate). Based on ion chromatography with conductivity detection (chemical suppression of eluent conductivity), the key point in this method is the use of gradient elution with two eluents of different pH and ionic strength, not requiring derivatization. There is no interference from the other ions at higher concentrations. The detection limits obtained for glyphosate and AMPA were 15 μg L-1 and 80 μg L-1, respectively. As the method allows the analysis of a large number of samples, it has been successfully applied to monitoring the quality of tap water in 89 municipalities in the northeast region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Ecological limits to evolutionary rescue

Environments change, for both natural and anthropogenic reasons, which can threaten species persistence. Evolutionary adaptation is a potentially powerful mechanism to allow species to persist in these changing environments. To determine the conditions under which adaptation will prevent extinction (evolutionary rescue), classic quantitative genetics models have assumed a constantly changing environment. They predict that species traits will track a moving environmental optimum with a lag that approaches a constant. If fitness is negative at this lag, the species will go extinct. There have been many elaborations of these models incorporating increased genetic realism. Here, we review and explore the consequences of four ecological complications: non-quadratic fitness functions, interacting density- and trait-dependence, species interactions and fundamental limits to adaptation. We show that non-quadratic fitness functions can result in evolutionary tipping points and existential crises, as can the interaction between density- and trait-dependent mortality. We then review the literature on how interspecific interactions affect adaptation and persistence. Finally, we suggest an alternative theoretical framework that considers bounded environmental change and fundamental limits to adaptation. A research programme that combines theory and experiments and integrates across organizational scales will be needed to predict whether adaptation will prevent species extinction in changing environments.
