Liquid-metal-based microfluidic nanoplasmonic platform for point-of-care naked-eye antibody detection

Despite high sensitivity of nanoparticle-on-mirror cavities, a crucial branch of plasmonic nanomaterials, complex preparation and readout processes limit their extensive application in biosensing. Alternatively, liquid metals (LMs) combining fluidity and excellent plasmonic characteristics have become potential candidates for constructing plasmonic nanostructures. Herein, we propose a microfluidic-integration strategy to construct LM-based immunoassay platform, enabling LM-based nanoplasmonic sensors to be used for point-of-care (POC) clinical biomarker detection. Flowable LM is introduced onto protein-coated Au nanoparticle monolayer to form a "mirror-on-nanoparticle" nanostructure, simplifying the fabrication process in the conventional nanoparticle-on-mirror cavities. When antibodies were captured by antigens coated on the Au nanoparticle monolayer, devices respond both thickness and refractive index change of biomolecular layers, outputting naked-eye readable signals with high sensitivity (limit of detection: ∼ 604 fM) and a broad dynamic range (6 orders). This new assay, which generates quantitative results in 30 min, allows for high-throughput, smartphone-based detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies against multiple variants in clinical serum or blood samples. These results establish an advanced avenue for POC testing with LM materials, and demonstrate its potential to facilitate diagnostics, surveillance and prevalence studies for various infectious diseases.

Highly sensitive and label-free protein immunoassay-based biosensor comprising infrared metamaterial absorber inducing strong coupling

A mid-infrared label-free immunoassay-based biosensor is an effective device to help identify and quantify biomolecules. This biosensor employs a surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, which is a highly potent sensing technique for detecting minute quantities of analytes. In this study, a biosensor was constructed using a metamaterial absorber, which facilitated strong coupling effects. For maximum coupling effect, it is necessary to enhance the near-field intensity and the spatial and spectral overlap between the optical cavity resonance and the vibrational mode of the analyte. Due to significant peak splitting, conventional baseline correction methods fail to adequately analyze such a coupling system. Therefore, we employed a coupled harmonic oscillation model to analyze the spectral distortion resulting from the peak splitting induced by the strong coupling effect. The proposed biosensor with a thrombin-binding aptamer-based immunoassay could achieve a limit of detection of 267.4 pM, paving the way for more efficient protein detection in clinical practice.

Wafer-Scale Replication of Plasmonic Nanostructures via Microbubbles for Nanophotonics

Quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures are in high demand for their ability to manipulate and enhance light-matter interactions at subwavelength scales, making them promising building blocks for diverse nanophotonic devices. Despite their potential, the integration of these nanostructures with optical sensors and imaging systems on a large scale poses challenges. Here, a robust technique for the rapid, scalable, and seamless replication of quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures is presented straight from their production wafers using a microbubble process. This approach not only simplifies the integration of quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures into a wide range of standard and custom optical imaging devices and sensors but also significantly enhances their imaging and sensing performance beyond the limits of conventional methods. This study encompasses experimental, computational, and theoretical investigations, and it fully elucidates the operational mechanism. Additionally, it explores a versatile set of options for outfitting nanophotonic devices with custom-designed plasmonic nanostructures, thereby fulfilling specific operational criteria.

Nanoplasmonic biosensors for environmental sustainability and human health

Monitoring the health conditions of the environment and humans is essential for ensuring human well-being, promoting global health, and achieving sustainability. Innovative biosensors are crucial in accurately monitoring health conditions, uncovering the hidden connections between the environment and human well-being, and understanding how environmental factors trigger autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and infectious diseases. This review evaluates the use of nanoplasmonic biosensors that can monitor environmental health and human diseases according to target analytes of different sizes and scales, providing valuable insights for preventive medicine. We begin by explaining the fundamental principles and mechanisms of nanoplasmonic biosensors. We investigate the potential of nanoplasmonic techniques for detecting various biological molecules, extracellular vesicles (EVs), pathogens, and cells. We also explore the possibility of wearable nanoplasmonic biosensors to monitor the physiological network and healthy connectivity of humans, animals, plants, and organisms. This review will guide the design of next-generation nanoplasmonic biosensors to advance sustainable global healthcare for humans, the environment, and the planet.

Targeted FT-NIR and SERS Detection of Breast Cancer HER-II Biomarkers in Blood Serum Using PCB-Based Plasmonic Active Nanostructured Thin Film Label-Free Immunosensor Immobilized with Directional GNU-Conjugated Antibody

This work describes our recent PCB-based plasmonic nanostructured platform patent (US 11,828,747B2) for the detection of biomarkers in breast cancer serum (BCS). A 50 nm thin gold film (TGF) was immersion-coated on PCB (i.e., PCB-TGF) and immobilized covalently with gold nanourchin (GNU) via a 1,6-Hexanedithiol (HDT) linkage to produce a plasmonic activated nanostructured thin film (PANTF) platform. A label-free SERS immunosensor was fabricated by conjugating the platform with monoclonal HER-II antibodies (mAb) in a directional orientation via adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) to provide higher accessibility to overexpressed HER-II biomarkers (i.e., 2+ (early), 3+ (locally advanced), and positive (meta) in BCS. An enhancement factor (EF) of 0.3 × 105 was achieved for PANTF using Rhodamine (R6G), and the morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). UV-vis spectroscopy showed the peaks at 222, 231, and 213 nm corresponding to ADH, mAb, and HER-II biomarkers, respectively. The functionalization and conjugation were investigated by Fourier Transform Near Infrared (FT-NIR) where the most dominant overlapped spectra of 2+, 3+, and Pos correspond to OH-combination of carbohydrate, RNH2 1st overtone, and aromatic CH 1st overtone of mAb, respectively. SERS data were filtered using the filtfilt filter from scipy.signals, baseline corrected using the Improved Asymmetric Least Squares (isals) function from the pybaselines.Whittaker library. The results showed the common peaks at 867, 1312, 2894, 3026, and 3258 cm-1 corresponding to glycine, alanine ν (C-N-C) assigned to the symmetric C-N-C stretch mode; tryptophan and α helix; C-H antisymmetric and symmetric stretching; NH3+ in amino acids; and N-H stretch primary amide, respectively, with the intensity of Pos > 3+ > 2+. This trend is justifiable considering the stage of each sample. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discrimination Analysis (LDA) were employed for the statistical analysis of data.

PISC-Net: A Comprehensive Neural Network Framework for Predicting Metasurface Infrared Emission Spectra

Multifunctional metasurfaces have exhibited extensive potential in various fields, owing to their unparalleled capacity for controlling electromagnetic wave characteristics. The precise resolution is achieved through numerical simulation in conventional metasurface design methodologies. Nevertheless, the simulations using these approaches are inherently computationally costly. This paper proposes the Physical Insight Self-Correcting Convolutional Network (PISC-Net), which enables rapid prediction of infrared radiation spectra of metasurfaces with remarkable generalization capacity. In contrast to preceding prediction networks, we have enhanced the cognitive ability of the network to recognize physical mechanisms by designing parameter-communication modules and integrating a priori knowledge grounded in the parameter association mechanism. Additionally, we proposed an effective strategy for constructing data sets that facilitate precise tuning of absorption bands in the entire spectral range (3-14 μm) and serves to reduce the costs associated with data set development. Transfer learning is employed to obtain precise predictions for large-period metasurfaces from limited data sets. This approach demonstrates that a network trained exclusively on simulation data could predict experimental outcomes accurately, as proved by the comparative analysis between simulation, experimental testing, and prediction results. The average mean square error is less than 4%.

Robust consistent single quantum dot strong coupling in plasmonic nanocavities

Strong coupling between a single quantum emitter and an optical cavity (at rate Ω) accesses fundamental quantum optics and provides an essential building block for photonic quantum technologies. However, the minimum mode volume of conventional dielectric cavities restricts their operation to cryogenic temperature for strong coupling. Here we harness surface self-assembly to make deterministic strong coupling at room temperature using CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) in nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic nanocavities. We achieve a fabrication yield of ~70% for single QD strong coupling by optimizing their size and nano-assembly. A clear and reliable Rabi splitting is observed both in the scattering of each nanocavity and their photoluminescence, which are however not equal. Integrating these quantum elements with electrical pumping allows demonstration of strong coupling in their electroluminescence. This advance provides a straightforward way to achieve practical quantum devices at room temperature, and opens up exploration of their nonlinear, electrical, and quantum correlation properties.

Tuning Overbias Plasmon Energy and Intensity in Molecular Plasmonic Tunneling Junctions by Atomic Polarizability

Plasmon excitation in molecular tunnel junctions is interesting because the plasmonic properties of the device can be, in principle, controlled by varying the chemical structure of the molecules. The plasmon energy of the excited plasmons usually follows the quantum cutoff law, but frequently overbias plasmon energy has been observed, which can be explained by quantum shot noise, multielectron processes, or hot carrier models. So far, clear correlations between molecular structure and the plasmon energy have not been reported. Here, we introduce halogenated molecules (HS(CH2)12X, with X = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) with polarizable terminal atoms as the tunnel barriers and demonstrate molecular control over both the excited plasmon intensity and energy for a given applied voltage. As the polarizability of the terminal atom increases, the tunnel barrier height decreases, resulting in an increase in the tunneling current and the plasmon intensity without changing the tunneling barrier width. We also show that the plasmon energy is controlled by the electrostatic potential drop at the molecule-electrode interface, which depends on the polarizability of the terminal atom and the metal electrode material (Ag, Au, or Pt). Our results give new insights in the relation between molecular structure, electronic structure of the molecular junction, and the plasmonic properties which are important for the development of molecular scale plasmonic-electronic devices.

Uncovering low-frequency vibrations in surface-enhanced Raman of organic molecules

Accessing the terahertz (THz) spectral domain through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is challenging and opens up the study of low-frequency molecular and electronic excitations. Compared to direct THz probing of heterogenous ensembles, the extreme plasmonic confinement of visible light to deep sub-wavelength scales allows the study of hundreds or even single molecules. We show that self-assembled molecular monolayers of a set of simple aromatic thiols confined inside single-particle plasmonic nanocavities can be distinguished by their low-wavenumber spectral peaks below 200 cm-1, after removal of a bosonic inelastic contribution and an exponential background from the spectrum. Developing environment-dependent density-functional-theory simulations of the metal-molecule configuration enables the assignment and classification of their THz vibrations as well as the identification of intermolecular coupling effects and of the influence of the gold surface configuration. Furthermore, we show dramatically narrower THz SERS spectra from individual molecules at picocavities, which indicates the possibility to study intrinsic vibrational properties beyond inhomogeneous broadening, further supporting the key role of local environment.

Toward Modeling the Complexity of the Chemical Mechanism in SERS

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides detailed information about the binding of molecules at interfaces and their interactions with the local environment due to the large enhancement of Raman scattering. This enhancement arises from a combination of the electromagnetic mechanism (EM) and chemical mechanism (CM). While it is commonly accepted that EM gives rise to most of the enhancement, large spectral changes originate from CM. To elucidate the rich information contained in SERS spectra about molecules at interfaces, a comprehensive understanding of the enhancement mechanisms is necessary. In this Perspective, we discuss the current understanding of the enhancement mechanisms and highlight their interplay in complex local environments. We will also discuss emerging areas where the development of computational and theoretical models is needed with specific attention given to how the CM contributes to the spectral changes. Future efforts in modeling should focus on overcoming the challenges presented in this review in order to capture the complexity of CM in SERS.

Room-temperature quantum nanoplasmonic coherent perfect absorption

Light-matter superposition states obtained via strong coupling play a decisive role in quantum information processing, but the deleterious effects of material dissipation and environment-induced decoherence inevitably destroy coherent light-matter polaritons over time. Here, we propose the use of coherent perfect absorption under near-field driving to prepare and protect the polaritonic states of a single quantum emitter interacting with a plasmonic nanocavity at room temperature. Our scheme of quantum nanoplasmonic coherent perfect absorption leverages an inherent frequency specificity to selectively initialize the coupled system in a chosen plasmon-emitter dressed state, while the coherent, unidirectional and non-perturbing near-field energy transfer from a proximal plasmonic waveguide can in principle render the dressed state robust against dynamic dissipation under ambient conditions. Our study establishes a previously unexplored paradigm for quantum state preparation and coherence preservation in plasmonic cavity quantum electrodynamics, offering compelling prospects for elevating quantum nanophotonic technologies to ambient temperatures.

Local electric field in nanocavities dictates the vibrational relaxation dynamics of interfacial molecules

Plasmonic nanocavities enable the generation of strong light-matter coupling and exhibit great potential in plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs). Although an electric field generated by nanocavities (E n) has recently been reported, its effect on the vibrational energy relaxation (VER) of the molecules in the nanocavities has not been explored. In this study, we reveal the impact of an electric field sensed by molecules (para-substituted thiophenol derivatives) in a nanocavity (E f) on VER processes by employing advanced time-resolved femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) supplemented by electrochemical measurements. The magnitude of E n is almost identical (1.0 ± 0.2 V nm-1) beyond the experimental deviation while E f varies from 0.3 V nm-1 to 1.7 V nm-1 depending on the substituent. An exponential correlation between E f and the complete recovery time of the ground vibrational C[double bond, length as m-dash]C state (T 2) of the phenyl ring is observed. Substances with a smaller T 2 are strongly correlated with the reported macroscopic chemical reactivity. This finding may aid in enriching the current understanding of PMCRs and highlights the possibility of regulating vibrational energy flow into desired reaction coordinates by using a local electric field.

Advancing COVID-19 Diagnosis: Enhancement in SERS-PCR with 30-nm Au Nanoparticle-Internalized Nanodimpled Substrates

Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with fluorescence detection is the gold standard for diagnosing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) However, the fluorescence detection in RT-PCR requires multiple amplification steps when the initial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) concentration is low. Therefore, this study has developed a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based PCR (SERS-PCR) assay platform using the gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-internalized gold nanodimpled substrate (AuNDS) plasmonic platform. By comparing different sizes of AuNPs, it is observed that using 30 nm AuNPs improves the detection limit by approximately ten times compared to 70 nm AuNPs. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations show that multiple hotspots are formed between AuNPs and the cavity surface and between AuNPs when 30 nm AuNPs are internalized in the cavity, generating a strong electric field. With this 30 nm AuNPs-AuNDS SERS platform, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) ribonucleic acid (RNA)-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) can be detected in only six amplification cycles, significantly improving over the 25 cycles required for RT-PCR. These findings pave the way for an amplification-free molecular diagnostic system based on SERS.

Nanoplasmonic sensors for extracellular vesicles and bacterial membrane vesicles

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising tools for the early diagnosis of diseases, and bacterial membrane vesicles (MVs) are especially important in health and environment monitoring. However, detecting EVs or bacterial MVs presents significant challenges for the clinical translation of EV-based diagnostics. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive discussion on the basics of nanoplasmonic sensing and emphasize recent developments in nanoplasmonics-based optical sensors to effectively identify EVs or bacterial MVs. We explore various nanoplasmonic sensors tailored for EV or bacterial MV detection, emphasizing the application of localized surface plasmon resonance through gold nanoparticles and their multimers. Additionally, we highlight advanced EV detection techniques based on surface plasmon polaritons using plasmonic thin film and nanopatterned structures. Furthermore, we evaluate the improved detection capability of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in identifying and classifying these vesicles, aided by plasmonic nanostructures. Nanoplasmonic sensing techniques have remarkable precision and sensitivity, making them a potential tool for accurate EV detection in clinical applications, facilitating point-of-care molecular diagnostics. Finally, we summarize the challenges associated with nanoplasmonic EV or bacterial MV sensors and offer insights into potential future directions for this evolving field.

Light Emission and Conductance Fluctuations in Electrically Driven and Plasmonically Enhanced Molecular Junctions

Electrically connected and plasmonically enhanced molecular junctions combine the optical functionalities of high field confinement and enhancement (cavity function), and of high radiative efficiency (antenna function) with the electrical functionalities of molecular transport. Such combined optical and electrical probes have proven useful for the fundamental understanding of metal-molecule contacts and contribute to the development of nanoscale optoelectronic devices including ultrafast electronics and nanosensors. Here, we employ a self-assembled metal-molecule-metal junction with a nanoparticle bridge to investigate correlated fluctuations in conductance and tunneling-induced light emission at room temperature. Despite the presence of hundreds of molecules in the junction, the electrical conductance and light emission are both highly sensitive to atomic-scale fluctuations-a phenomenology reminiscent of picocavities observed in Raman scattering and of luminescence blinking from photoexcited plasmonic junctions. Discrete steps in conductance associated with fluctuating emission intensities through the multiple plasmonic modes of the junction are consistent with a finite number of randomly localized, point-like sources dominating the optoelectronic response. Contrasting with these microscopic fluctuations, the overall plasmonic and electronic functionalities of our devices feature long-term survival at room temperature and under an electrical bias of a few volts, allowing for measurements over several months.

Chiral-Induced Surface-Enhanced Raman Optical Activity on a Single-Particle Substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman optical activity (SEROA) is a promising method for analyzing chiral molecules' molecular chirality and structural changes. However, conventional SEROA measurements face challenges related to substrate stability, signal uniformity, and interference from electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Therefore, in this study, we present a uniform and stable substrate for SEROA measurements by utilizing Au nanoparticles on the Au nanofilm structure to confine hotspots to the film-particle junctions and minimize ECD interference. This method also uses the induction of chirality from chiral molecules to achiral molecules to overcome the limitation of chiral molecules in SEROA measurements, specifically their lower signal efficiency. Successful chirality transfer is demonstrated through distinguishable SEROA signals when the l/d-alanine mixture is present. Enantiomeric discrimination of different l/d-alanine ratios was achieved with linear responses in the circular intensity difference (CID). Altogether, the proposed chiral-induced SEROA on the AuNP_on_AuNF substrate shows promising potential for detecting and characterizing structural changes in biomolecules, thus making it a valuable tool for various research applications.

Influence of Quadrupolar Molecular Transitions within Plasmonic Cavities

Optical nanocavities have revolutionized the manipulation of radiative properties of molecular and semiconductor emitters. Here, we investigate the amplified photoluminescence arising from exciting a dark transition of β-carotene molecules embedded within plasmonic nanocavities. Integrating a molecular monolayer into nanoparticle-on-mirror nanostructures unveils enhancements surpassing 4 orders of magnitude in the initially light-forbidden excitation. Such pronounced enhancements transcend conventional dipolar mechanisms, underscoring the presence of alternative enhancement pathways. Notably, Fourier-plane scattering spectroscopy shows that the photoluminescence excitation resonance aligns with a higher-order plasmonic cavity mode, which supports strong field gradients. Combining quantum chemistry calculations with electromagnetic simulations reveals an important interplay between the Franck-Condon quadrupole and Herzberg-Teller dipole contributions in governing the absorption characteristics of this dark transition. In contrast to free space, the quadrupole moment plays a significant role in photoluminescence enhancement within nanoparticle-on-mirror cavities. These findings provide an approach to access optically inactive transitions, promising advancements in spectroscopy and sensing applications.

Few-emitter lasing in single ultra-small nanocavities

Lasers are ubiquitous for information storage, processing, communications, sensing, biological research and medical applications. To decrease their energy and materials usage, a key quest is to miniaturise lasers down to nanocavities. Obtaining the smallest mode volumes demands plasmonic nanocavities, but for these, gain comes from only a single or few emitters. Until now, lasing in such devices was unobtainable due to low gain and high cavity losses. Here, we demonstrate a form of 'few emitter lasing' in a plasmonic nanocavity approaching the single-molecule emitter regime. The few-emitter lasing transition significantly broadens, and depends on the number of molecules and their individual locations. We show this non-standard few-emitter lasing can be understood by developing a theoretical approach extending previous weak-coupling theories. Our work paves the way for developing nanolaser applications as well as fundamental studies at the limit of few emitters.

Open Cross-gap Gold Nanocubes with Strong, Large-Area, Symmetric Electromagnetic Field Enhancement for On-Particle Molecular-Fingerprint Raman Bioassays

Plasmonic nanoparticles with an externally open nanogap can localize the electromagnetic (EM) field inside the gap and directly detect the target via the open nanogap with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). It would be beneficial to design and synthesize the open gap nanoprobes in a high yield for obtaining uniform and quantitative signals from randomly oriented nanoparticles and utilizing these particles for direct SERS analysis. Here, we report a facile strategy to synthesize open cross-gap (X-gap) nanocubes (OXNCs) with size- and EM field-tunable gaps in a high yield. The site-specific growth of Au budding structures at the corners of the AuNC using the principle that the Au deposition rate is faster than the surface diffusion rate of the adatoms allows for a uniform X-gap formation. The average SERS enhancement factor (EF) for the OXNCs with 2.6 nm X-gaps was 1.2 × 109, and the EFs were narrowly distributed within 1 order of magnitude for ∼93% of the measured OXNCs. OXNCs consistently displayed strong EM field enhancement on large particle surfaces for widely varying incident light polarization directions, and this can be attributed to the symmetric X-gap geometry and the availability of these gaps on all 6 faces of a cube. Finally, the OXNC probes with varying X-gap sizes have been utilized in directly detecting biomolecules with varying sizes without Raman dyes. The concept, synthetic method, and biosensing results shown here with OXNCs pave the way for designing, synthesizing, and utilizing plasmonic nanoparticles for selective, quantitative molecular-fingerprint Raman sensing and imaging applications.

Giant Photoluminescence Enhancement of Monolayer WSe2 Using a Plasmonic Nanocavity with On-Demand Resonance

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered promising building blocks for next-generation photonic and optoelectronic devices, owing to their fascinating optical properties. However, their inherent weak light absorption and low quantum yield severely hinder their practical applications. Here, we report up to 18000-fold photoluminescence (PL) enhancement in a monolayer WSe2-coupled plasmonic nanocavity. A spectroscopy-assisted nanomanipulation technique enables the assembly of a nanocavity with customizable resonances to simultaneously enhance the excitation and emission processes. In particular, precise control over the magnetic cavity mode facilitates spectral and spatial overlap with the exciton, resulting in plasmon-exciton intermediate coupling that approaches the maximum emission rate in the hybrid system. Meanwhile, the cavity mode exhibits high radiation directivity, which overwhelmingly directs surface-normal PL emission and leads to a 17-fold increase in the collection efficiency. Our approach opens up a new avenue to enhance the PL intensity of monolayer TMDs, facilitating their implementation in highly efficient optoelectronic devices.

Third-Generation Anticancer Photodynamic Therapy Systems Based on Star-like Anionic Polyacrylamide Polymer, Gold Nanoparticles, and Temoporfin Photosensitizer

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive anticancer treatment that uses special photosensitizer molecules (PS) to generate singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a tissue under excitation with red or infrared light. Though the method has been known for decades, it has become more popular recently with the development of new efficient organic dyes and LED light sources. Here we introduce a ternary nanocomposite: water-soluble star-like polymer/gold nanoparticles (AuNP)/temoporfin PS, which can be considered as a third-generation PDT system. AuNPs were synthesized in situ inside the polymer molecules, and the latter were then loaded with PS molecules in an aqueous solution. The applied method of synthesis allows precise control of the size and architecture of polymer nanoparticles as well as the concentration of the components. Dynamic light scattering confirmed the formation of isolated particles (120 nm diameter) with AuNPs and PS molecules incorporated inside the polymer shell. Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies revealed optimal concentrations of the components that can simultaneously reduce the side effects of dark toxicity and enhance singlet oxygen generation to increase cancer cell mortality. Here, we report on the optical properties of the system and detailed mechanisms of the observed enhancement of the phototherapeutic effect. Combinations of organic dyes with gold nanoparticles allow significant enhancement of the effect of ROS generation due to surface plasmonic resonance in the latter, while the application of a biocompatible star-like polymer vehicle with a dextran core and anionic polyacrylamide arms allows better local integration of the components and targeted delivery of the PS molecules to cancer cells. In this study, we demonstrate, as proof of concept, a successful application of the developed PDT system for in vitro treatment of triple-negative breast cancer cells under irradiation with a low-power LED lamp (660 nm). We consider the developed nanocomposite to be a promising PDT system for application to other types of cancer.

Relations between near-field enhancements and Purcell factors in hybrid nanostructures of plasmonic antennas and dielectric cavities

Strong near-field enhancements (NFEs) of nanophotonic structures are believed to be closely related to high Purcell factors (FP). Here, we theoretically show that the correlation is partially correct; the extinction cross section (σ) response is also critical in determining FP. The divergence between NFE and FP is especially pronounced in plasmonic-dielectric hybrid systems, where the plasmonic antenna supports dipolar plasmon modes and the dielectric cavity hosts Mie-like resonances. The cavity's enhanced-field environment can boost the antenna's NFEs, but the FP is not increased concurrently due to the larger effective σ that is intrinsic to the FP calculations. Interestingly, the peak FP for the coupled system can be predicted by using the NFE and σ responses. Furthermore, the limits for FP of coupled systems are considered; they are determined by the sum of the FP of a redshifted (or modified, if applicable) antenna and an individual cavity. This contrasts starkly with the behavior of NFE which is closely associated with the multiplicative effects of the NFEs provided by the antenna and the dielectric cavity. The differing behaviors of NFE and FP in hybrid cavities have varied impacts on relevant nanophotonic applications such as fluorescence, Raman scattering and enhanced light-matter interactions.

Perspective on Tailored Nanostructure-Dominated SPP Effects for SERS

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excited by an incident light can normally produce strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) at the nanogaps among plasmonic nano-objects (so-called hot spots), which is extensively explored. In contrast, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that can be generated by an incident beam via particular structures with a conservation of wave vectors can excite SERS effects as well. SPPs actually play an indispensable role in high-performance SERS devices but receive much less attention. In this perspective, SPPs and their couplings with LSPR for SERS excitations with differing effectiveness through particular plasmonic/dielectric structures/configurations, along with relevant fabrication approaches, are profoundly reviewed and commented on from a unique perspective from in situ to ex situ excitations of SERS enabled by spatiotemporally separated multiple processes of SPPs. Quantitative design of particular configurations/architectures enabling highly efficient and effective multiple processes of SPPs is particularly emphasized as one giant leap toward ultimate full quantitative design of intrinsically high-performance SERS chips and very critical for their batch manufacturability and applications as well. The viewpoints and prospects about innovative SERS devices based on tailored structure-dominated SPPs effects and their coupling with LSPR are presented and discussed.

Binding-Free Taste Visualization with Plasmonic Metasurfaces

Taste sensors using photonics, termed artificial photonic tongues, have emerged as a promising platform for intuitive taste discrimination. However, the need for complex binding protocols for each taste profile limits their applicability to a narrow range of taste molecules. Here, we introduce an intriguing "binding-free" approach to molecular taste sensing using plasmonics, eliminating the requirement for physical or chemical binding protocols. We develop a wafer-scale plasmonic metasurface constructed by coating metallic nanoparticles in a scalable manner onto a metallic mirror. This metasurface functions to detect molecular refractive indices and surface tensions via 2D projection optical images of an array of liquid droplets containing the taste molecules on top, which can immediately visualize and distinguish between the five basic tastes of molecules (including their mixtures) as well as other additional spicy and alcoholic tastes. We anticipate that this intuitive and rapid taste-sensing approach has the potential to establish a user-friendly and portable taste-sensing platform.

High-quality nanocavities through multimodal confinement of hyperbolic polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride

Compressing light into nanocavities substantially enhances light-matter interactions, which has been a major driver for nanostructured materials research. However, extreme confinement generally comes at the cost of absorption and low resonator quality factors. Here we suggest an alternative optical multimodal confinement mechanism, unlocking the potential of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in isotopically pure hexagonal boron nitride. We produce deep-subwavelength cavities and demonstrate several orders of magnitude improvement in confinement, with estimated Purcell factors exceeding 108 and quality factors in the 50-480 range, values approaching the intrinsic quality factor of hexagonal boron nitride polaritons. Intriguingly, the quality factors we obtain exceed the maximum predicted by impedance-mismatch considerations, indicating that confinement is boosted by higher-order modes. We expect that our multimodal approach to nanoscale polariton manipulation will have far-reaching implications for ultrastrong light-matter interactions, mid-infrared nonlinear optics and nanoscale sensors.

New Nanophotonics Approaches for Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells

Over the past decade, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has experienced a remarkable ascent, soaring from 3.8% in 2009 to a remarkable record of 26.1% in 2023. Many recent approaches for improving PSC performance employ nanophotonic technologies, from light harvesting and thermal management to the manipulation of charge carrier dynamics. Plasmonic nanoparticles and arrayed dielectric nanostructures have been applied to tailor the light absorption, scattering, and conversion, as well as the heat dissipation within PSCs to improve their PCE and operational stability. In this review, it is begin with a concise introduction to define the realm of nanophotonics by focusing on the nanoscale interactions between light and surface plasmons or dielectric photonic structures. Prevailing strategies that utilize resonance-enhanced light-matter interactions for boosting the PCE and stability of PSCs from light trapping, carrier transportation, and thermal management perspectives are then elaborated, and the resultant practical applications, such as semitransparent photovoltaics, colored PSCs, and smart perovskite windows are discussed. Finally, the state-of-the-art nanophotonic paradigms in PSCs are reviewed, and the benefits of these approaches in improving the aesthetic effects and energy-saving character of PSC-integrated buildings are highlighted.

Synthesis and Raman Detection of 5-Amino-2-mercaptobenzimidazole Self-Assembled Monolayers in Nanoparticle-on-a-Mirror Plasmonic Cavity Driven by Dielectric Waveguides

Functionalization of metallic surfaces by molecular monolayers is a key process in fields such as nanophotonics or biotechnology. To strongly enhance light-matter interaction in such monolayers, nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) cavities can be formed by placing metal nanoparticles on such chemically functionalized metallic monolayers. In this work, we present a novel functionalization process of gold surfaces using 5-amino-2-mercaptobenzimidazole (5-A-2MBI) molecules, which can be used for upconversion from THz to visible frequencies. The synthesized surfaces and NPoM cavities are characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and advancing-receding contact angle measurements. Moreover, we show that NPoM cavities can be efficiently integrated on a silicon-based photonic chip performing pump injection and Raman-signal extraction via silicon nitride waveguides. Our results open the way for the use of 5-A-2MBI monolayers in different applications, showing that NPoM cavities can be effectively integrated with photonic waveguides, enabling on-chip enhanced Raman spectroscopy or detection of infrared and THz radiation.

Strong Linearly Polarized Light Emission by Coupling Out-of-Plane Exciton to Anisotropic Gap Plasmon Nanocavity

With exceptional quantum confinement, 2D monolayer semiconductors support a strong excitonic effect, making them an ideal platform for exploring light-matter interactions and as building blocks for novel optoelectronic devices. Different from the well-known in-plane excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), the out-of-plane excitons in indium selenide (InSe) usually show weak emission, which limits their applications as light sources. Here, by embedding InSe in an anisotropic gap plasmon nanocavity, we have realized plasmon-enhanced linearly polarized photoluminescence with an anisotropic ratio up to ∼140, corresponding to degree of polarization (DoP) of ∼98.6%. Such polarization selectivity, originating from the polarization-dependent plasmonic enhancement supported by the "nanowire-on-mirror" nanocavity, can be well tuned by the InSe thickness. Moreover, we have also realized an InSe-based light-emitting diode with polarized electroluminescence. Our research highlights the role of excitonic dipole orientation in designing nanophotonic devices and paves the way for developing InSe-based optoelectronic devices with polarization control.

Lindblad Master Equation Capable of Describing Hybrid Quantum Systems in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime

Despite significant theoretical efforts devoted to studying the interaction between quantized light modes and matter, the so-called ultrastrong coupling regime still presents significant challenges for theoretical treatments and prevents the use of many common approximations. Here we demonstrate an approach that can describe the dynamics of hybrid quantum systems in any regime of interaction for an arbitrary electromagnetic (EM) environment. We extend a previous method developed for few-mode quantization of arbitrary systems to the case of ultrastrong light-matter coupling, and show that even such systems can be treated using a Lindblad master equation where decay operators act only on the photonic modes by ensuring that the effective spectral density of the EM environment is sufficiently suppressed at negative frequencies. We demonstrate the validity of our framework and show that it outperforms current state-of-the-art master equations for a simple model system, and then study a realistic nanoplasmonic setup where existing approaches cannot be applied.

Chiral nanomaterials in tissue engineering

Addressing significant medical challenges arising from tissue damage and organ failure, the field of tissue engineering has evolved to provide revolutionary approaches for regenerating functional tissues and organs. This involves employing various techniques, including the development and application of novel nanomaterials. Among them, chiral nanomaterials comprising non-superimposable nanostructures with their mirror images have recently emerged as innovative biomaterial candidates to guide tissue regeneration due to their unique characteristics. Chiral nanomaterials including chiral fibre supramolecular hydrogels, polymer-based chiral materials, self-assembling peptides, chiral-patterned surfaces, and the recently developed intrinsically chiroptical nanoparticles have demonstrated remarkable ability to regulate biological processes through routes such as enantioselective catalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. Despite several recent reviews on chiral nanomaterials, limited attention has been given to the specific potential of these materials in facilitating tissue regeneration processes. Thus, this timely review aims to fill this gap by exploring the fundamental characteristics of chiral nanomaterials, including their chiroptical activities and analytical techniques. Also, the recent advancements in incorporating these materials in tissue engineering applications are highlighted. The review concludes by critically discussing the outlook of utilizing chiral nanomaterials in guiding future strategies for tissue engineering design.

In situ electrochemical regeneration of nanogap hotspots for continuously reusable ultrathin SERS sensors

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) harnesses the confinement of light into metallic nanoscale hotspots to achieve highly sensitive label-free molecular detection that can be applied for a broad range of sensing applications. However, challenges related to irreversible analyte binding, substrate reproducibility, fouling, and degradation hinder its widespread adoption. Here we show how in-situ electrochemical regeneration can rapidly and precisely reform the nanogap hotspots to enable the continuous reuse of gold nanoparticle monolayers for SERS. Applying an oxidising potential of +1.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl) for 10 s strips a broad range of adsorbates from the nanogaps and forms a metastable oxide layer of few-monolayer thickness. Subsequent application of a reducing potential of -0.80 V for 5 s in the presence of a nanogap-stabilising molecular scaffold, cucurbit[5]uril, reproducibly regenerates the optimal plasmonic properties with SERS enhancement factors ≈106. The regeneration of the nanogap hotspots allows these SERS substrates to be reused over multiple cycles, demonstrating ≈5% relative standard deviation over at least 30 cycles of analyte detection and regeneration. Such continuous and reliable SERS-based flow analysis accesses diverse applications from environmental monitoring to medical diagnostics.

Enhancing Light Out-coupling in Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes through Plasmonic Nanostructures

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have emerged as promising candidates for lighting and display technologies owing to their high photoluminescence quantum efficiency and high carrier mobility. However, the performance of planar PeLEDs is limited by the out-coupling efficiency, predominantly governed by photonic losses at device interfaces. Most notably, the plasmonic loss at the metal electrode interfaces can account for up to 60% of the total loss. Here, we investigate the use of plasmonic nanostructures to improve the light out-coupling in PeLEDs. By integrating these nanostructures with PeLEDs, we have demonstrated an effectively reduced plasmonic loss and enhanced light out-coupling. As a result, the nanostructured PeLEDs exhibit an average 1.5-fold increase in external quantum efficiency and an ∼20-fold improvement in device lifetime. This finding offers a generic approach for enhancing light out-coupling, promising great potential to go beyond existing performance limitations.

Extensive photochemical restructuring of molecule-metal surfaces under room light

The molecule-metal interface is of paramount importance for many devices and processes, and directly involved in photocatalysis, molecular electronics, nanophotonics, and molecular (bio-)sensing. Here the photostability of this interface is shown to be sensitive even to room light levels for specific molecules and metals. Optical spectroscopy is used to track photoinduced migration of gold atoms when functionalised with different thiolated molecules that form uniform monolayers on Au. Nucleation and growth of characteristic surface metal nanostructures is observed from the light-driven adatoms. By watching the spectral shifts of optical modes from nanoparticles used to precoat these surfaces, we identify processes involved in the photo-migration mechanism and the chemical groups that facilitate it. This photosensitivity of the molecule-metal interface highlights the significance of optically induced surface reconstruction. In some catalytic contexts this can enhance activity, especially utilising atomically dispersed gold. Conversely, in electronic device applications such reconstructions introduce problematic aging effects.

Periodic Folded Gold Nanostructures with a Sub-10 nm Nanogap for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful spectroscopy technique for detection with its capacity for label-free, nondestructive analysis, and ultrasensitive characterization. High-performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with homogeneity and low cost are the key factors in chemical and biomedical analysis. In this study, we propose the technique of atomic force microscopy (AFM) scratching and nanoskiving to prepare periodic folded gold (Au) nanostructures as SERS substrates. Initially, folded Au nanostructures with tunable nanogaps and periodic structures are created through the scratching of Au films by AFM, the deposition of Ag/Au films, and the cutting of epoxy resin, reducing fabrication cost and operational complexity. Periodic folded Au nanostructures show the three-dimensional nanofocusing effect, hotspot effect, and standing wave effect to generate an extremely high electromagnetic field. As a typical molecule to be tested, p-aminothiophenol has the lowest detection limit of up to 10-9 M, owing to the balance between the electromagnetic field energy concentration and the transmission loss in periodic folded Au nanostructures. Finally, by precisely controlling the periods and nanogap widths of the folded Au nanostructures, the synergistic effect of surface plasmon resonance is optimized and shows good SERS properties, providing a new strategy for the preparation of plasmonic nanostructures.

Construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities and their applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy

Plasmonic nanocavities exhibit exceptional capabilities in visualizing the internal structure of a single molecule at sub-nanometer resolution. Among these, an easily manufacturable nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavity is a successful and powerful platform for demonstrating various optical phenomena. Exciting advances in surface-enhanced spectroscopy using NPoM nanocavities have been developed and explored, including enhanced Raman, fluorescence, phosphorescence, upconversion, etc. This perspective emphasizes the construction of NPoM nanocavities and their applications in achieving higher enhancement capabilities or spatial resolution in dark-field scattering spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. We describe a systematic framework that elucidates how to meet the requirements for studying light-matter interactions through the creation of well-designed NPoM nanocavities. Additionally, it provides an outlook on the challenges, future development directions, and practical applications in the field of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

Anti-cancer activity of zinc-tetraphenylporphyrin photosensitizer/dextran-graft-polyacrylamide copolymer/Au(Ag) nanoparticle nanohybrids

A comparative study of in vitro anti-cancer photodynamic activities of three-component zinc-tetraphenylporphyrin photosensitizer/dextran-graft-polyacrylamide copolymer/Au(Ag) nanoparticle (ZnTPP/D-g-PAA/Au(Ag)NP) nanohybrids on LNCaP prostate cancer cells was carried out under 420 nm light irradiation with low power. A significant cytotoxic effect was revealed for both ZnTPP/D-g-PAA/AgNP and ZnTPP/D-g-PAA/AuNP nanohybrids, where ZnTPP/D-g-PAA/AgNP nanohybrids exhibited considerably higher anticancer activity (82%) compared to ZnTPP/D-g-PAA/AuNP nanohybrids (45%). The higher activity of silver-containing nanohybrids is rationalized based on two factors. The first factor is the resonance of 420 nm light with a absorption Soret peak of the ZnTPP photosensitizer and a localized surface plasmon mode in Ag nanoparticles. Correspondingly, the plasmon enhancement of reactive oxygen species photogeneration by ZnTPP molecules was considerably higher for the nanohybrid containing silver compared to the one containing gold. The second factor is the higher cytotoxicity of Ag nanoparticles compared to Au ones. The study results prove the high potential of D-g-PAA/Ag(Au)NP nanohybrids combined with 420 nm light irradiation with low power in the photodynamic treatment of prostate cancer.

Room-Temperature Strong Coupling of Few-Exciton in a Monolayer WS2 with Plasmon and Dispersion Deviation

Engineering room-temperature strong coupling of few-exciton in transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with plasmons promises to construct compact and high-performance quantum optical devices. But it remains unimplemented due to their in-plane excitons. Here, we demonstrate the strong coupling of few-exciton within 10 in monolayer WS2 with the plasmonic mode with a large tangential component of the electric field tightly trapped around the sharp corners of an Au@Ag nanocuboid, the fewest number of excitons observed in the TMDC family so far. Furthermore, we for the first time report a significant deviation with a relative difference of up to 100.6% between the spectrum and eigenlevel splitting dispersions, which increases with decreasing coupling strength. It is also shown that the coupling strength obtained by the conventional concept of both being equal to the measured spectrum splitting is markedly overestimated. Our work enriches the understanding of strong light-matter interactions at room temperature.

Light-Emitting Plasmonic Tunneling Junctions: Current Status and Perspectives

Quantum tunneling, in which electrons can tunnel through a finite potential barrier while simultaneously interacting with other matter excitation, is one of the most fascinating phenomena without classical correspondence. In an extremely thin metallic nanogap, the deep-subwavelength-confined plasmon modes can be directly excited by the inelastically tunneling electrons driven by an externally applied voltage. Light emission via inelastic tunneling possesses a great potential application for next-generation light sources, with great superiority of ultracompact integration, large bandwidth, and ultrafast response. In this Perspective, we first briefly introduce the mechanism of plasmon generation in the inelastic electron tunneling process. Then the state of the art in plasmonic tunneling junctions will be reviewed, particularly emphasizing efficiency improvement, precise construction, active control, and electrically driven optical antenna integration. Ultimately, we forecast some promising and critical prospects that require further investigation.

Enhanced Photocurrent and Electrically Pumped Quantum Dot Emission from Single Plasmonic Nanoantennas

Integrating cavity-enhanced colloidal quantum dots (QDs) into photonic chip devices would be transformative for advancing room-temperature optoelectronic and quantum photonic technologies. However, issues with efficiency, stability, and cost remain formidable challenges to reach the single antenna limit. Here, we present a bottom-up approach that delivers single QD-plasmonic nanoantennas with electrical addressability. These QD nanojunctions exhibit robust photoresponse characteristics, with plasmonically enhanced photocurrent spectra matching the QD solution absorption. We demonstrate electroluminescence from individual plasmonic nanoantennas, extending the device lifetime beyond 40 min by utilizing a 3 nm electron-blocking polymer layer. In addition, we reveal a giant voltage-dependent redshift of up to 62 meV due to the quantum-confined Stark effect and determine the exciton polarizability of the CdSe QD monolayer to be 4 × 10-5 meV/(kV/cm)2. These developments provide a foundation for accessing scalable quantum light sources and high-speed, tunable optoelectronic systems operating under ambient conditions.

Electromagnetic enhancement spectra of one-dimensional plasmonic hotspots along silver nanowire dimer derived via surface-enhanced fluorescence

We developed a spectroscopic method for directly obtaining the spectra of electromagnetic (EM) enhancement of plasmonic hotspots (HSs). The method was applied to one-dimensional (1D) HSs generated between silver nanowire (NW) dimers. The EM enhancement spectra were derived by dividing the spectra of surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) from single NW dimers with SEF obtained from large nanoparticle aggregates, where aggregate-by-aggregate variations in the SEF spectra were averaged out. Some NW dimers were found to exhibit EM enhancement spectra that deviated from the plasmon resonance Rayleigh scattering spectra, indicating that their EM enhancement was not generated by superradiant plasmons. These experimental results were examined by numerical calculation based on the EM mechanism by varying the morphology of NW dimers. The calculations reproduced the spectral deviations as the NW diameter dependence of EM enhancement. Phase analysis of the enhanced EM near-fields along the 1D HSs revealed that the dipole-quadrupole coupled plasmon, which is a subradiant mode, mainly generates EM enhancement for dimers with NW diameters larger than ∼80 nm, which was consistent with scanning electron microscopic measurements.

Key Factors for Controlling Plasmon-Induced Chemical Reactions on Metal Surfaces

Plasmon-induced chemical reactions based on direct interactions between the plasmons of metal nanostructures and molecules have attracted increasing attention as a means of efficiently utilizing sunlight. In recent years, achievements in complex synthetic reactions as well as simple dissociation reactions of gaseous molecules using plasmons have been reported. However, recent research progress has revealed that multiple factors govern plasmon-induced chemical reactions. This perspective provides an overview of the key factors that influence plasmon-induced chemical reactions on metal surfaces and discusses the difficulty of controlling the reactions, which is caused by the entanglement of the key factors. A strategy for designing plasmonic metal catalysts to achieve the desired reactions is also discussed based on the current understanding, and directions for further research are provided.

Electrochemically Switchable Multimode Strong Coupling in Plasmonic Nanocavities

The strong-coupling interaction between quantum emitters and cavities provides the archetypical platform for fundamental quantum electrodynamics. Here we show that methylene blue (MB) molecules interact coherently with subwavelength plasmonic nanocavity modes at room temperature. Experimental results show that the strong coupling can be switched on and off reversibly when MB molecules undergo redox reactions which transform them to leuco-methylene blue molecules. In simulations we demonstrate the strong coupling between the second excited plasmonic cavity mode and resonant emitters. However, we also show that other detuned modes simultaneously couple efficiently to the molecular transitions, creating unusual cascades of mode spectral shifts and polariton formation. This is possible due to the relatively large plasmonic particle size resulting in reduced mode splittings. The results open significant potential for device applications utilizing active control of strong coupling.

Inversion of the Chiroptical Responses of Chiral Gold Nanoparticles with a Gold Film

The deposition of chiral nanoparticles (NPs) onto various substrates is crucial for the fabrication of high-density photonic devices. Understanding the interaction of chiral light and chiral NPs supported on substrates is essential for developing optical sensors and modulators. However, the chiroptical responses of plasmonic chiral NPs on substrates have remained elusive. Here we provide an important understanding of the correlation between the substrate material and the chiroptical response. The scattering dissymmetry factors of individual chiral Au nanocubes are inverted and enhanced with a gold film. Qualitative theories are proposed to analyze the observed variations in the chiroptical signals of chiral NPs on different substrates. Our results offer an encouraging route for modulating and amplifying the chiroptical signals in the use of chiral NPs in light control, light-based quantum technologies, and sensing.

Quantum plasmonics pushes chiral sensing limit to single molecules: a paradigm for chiral biodetections

Chiral sensing of single molecules is vital for the understanding of chirality and their applications in biomedicine. However, current technologies face severe limitations in achieving single-molecule sensitivity. Here we overcome these limitations by designing a tunable chiral supramolecular plasmonic system made of helical oligoamide sequences (OS) and nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) resonator, which works across the classical and quantum regimes. Our design enhances the chiral sensitivity in the quantum tunnelling regime despite of the reduced local E-field, which is due to the strong Coulomb interactions between the chiral OSs and the achiral NPoMs and the additional enhancement from tunnelling electrons. A minimum of four molecules per single-Au particle can be detected, which allows for the detection of an enantiomeric excess within a monolayer, manifesting great potential for the chiral sensing of single molecules.

Single-emitter super-resolved imaging of radiative decay rate enhancement in dielectric gap nanoantennas

High refractive index dielectric nanoantennas strongly modify the decay rate via the Purcell effect through the design of radiative channels. Due to their dielectric nature, the field is mainly confined inside the nanostructure and in the gap, which is hard to probe with scanning probe techniques. Here we use single-molecule fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (smFLIM) to map the decay rate enhancement in dielectric GaP nanoantenna dimers with a median localization precision of 14 nm. We measure, in the gap of the nanoantenna, decay rates that are almost 30 times larger than on a glass substrate. By comparing experimental results with numerical simulations we show that this large enhancement is essentially radiative, contrary to the case of plasmonic nanoantennas, and therefore has great potential for applications such as quantum optics and biosensing.

Metal to insulator transition for conducting polymers in plasmonic nanogaps

Conjugated polymers are promising material candidates for many future applications in flexible displays, organic circuits, and sensors. Their performance is strongly affected by their structural conformation including both electrical and optical anisotropy. Particularly for thin layers or close to crucial interfaces, there are few methods to track their organization and functional behaviors. Here we present a platform based on plasmonic nanogaps that can assess the chemical structure and orientation of conjugated polymers down to sub-10 nm thickness using light. We focus on a representative conjugated polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), of varying thickness (2-20 nm) while it undergoes redox in situ. This allows dynamic switching of the plasmonic gap spacer through a metal-insulator transition. Both dark-field (DF) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra track the optical anisotropy and orientation of polymer chains close to a metallic interface. Moreover, we demonstrate how this influences both optical and redox switching for nanothick PEDOT devices.

Ultracompact Single-Photon Sources of Linearly Polarized Vortex Beams

Ultracompact chip-integrated single-photon sources of collimated beams with polarization-encoded states are crucial for integrated quantum technologies. However, most of currently available single-photon sources rely on external bulky optical components to shape the polarization and phase front of emitted photon beams. Efficient integration of quantum emitters with beam shaping and polarization encoding functionalities remains so far elusive. Here, ultracompact single-photon sources of linearly polarized vortex beams based on chip-integrated quantum emitter-coupled metasurfaces are presented, which are meticulously designed by fully exploiting the potential of nanobrick-arrayed metasurfaces. The authors first demonstrate on-chip single-photon generation of high-purity linearly polarized vortex beams with prescribed topological charges of 0, - 1, and +1. The multiplexing of single-photon emission channels with orthogonal linear polarizations carrying different topological charges are further realized and their entanglement is demonstarated. The work illustrates the potential and feasibility of ultracompact quantum emitter-coupled metasurfaces as a new quantum optics platform for realizing chip-integrated high-dimensional single-photon sources.

Plasmon-induced magnetic anapole mode assisted strong field enhancement

Optical metamaterials, sensing, nonlinear optics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopies have witnessed the remarkable potential of the anapole mode. While dielectric particles with a high refractive index have garnered significant attention in recent years, the exploration of plasmonic anapole modes with intense localized electric field enhancements in the visible frequency range remains limited. In this study, we present a theoretical investigation on the relationship between the strongest near-field response and magnetic anapole modes, along with their substantial enhancement of Raman signals from probing molecules. These captivating findings arise from the design of a practical metallic oblate spheroid-film plasmonic system that generates magnetic anapole resonances at frequencies within the visible-near-infrared range. This research not only sheds light on the underlying mechanisms in a wide range of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopies but also paves the way for innovative nano-device designs.

Exciton Polaritons in Emergent Two-Dimensional Semiconductors

The "marriage" of light (i.e., photon) and matter (i.e., exciton) in semiconductors leads to the formation of hybrid quasiparticles called exciton polaritons with fascinating quantum phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and photon blockade. The research of exciton polaritons has been evolving into an era with emergent two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and photonic structures for their tremendous potential to break the current limitations of quantum fundamental study and photonic applications. In this Perspective, the basic concepts of 2D excitons, optical resonators, and the strong coupling regime are introduced. The research progress of exciton polaritons is reviewed, and important discoveries (especially the recent ones of 2D exciton polaritons) are highlighted. Subsequently, the emergent 2D exciton polaritons are discussed in detail, ranging from the realization of the strong coupling regime in various photonic systems to the discoveries of attractive phenomena with interesting physics and extensive applications. Moreover, emerging 2D semiconductors, such as 2D perovskites (2DPK) and 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductors, are surveyed for the manipulation of exciton polaritons with distinct control degrees of freedom (DOFs). Finally, the outlook on the 2D exciton polaritons and their nonlinear interactions is presented with our initial numerical simulations. This Perspective not only aims to provide an in-depth overview of the latest fundamental findings in 2D exciton polaritons but also attempts to serve as a valuable resource to prospect explorations of quantum optics and topological photonic applications.

The Geometry of Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Plasmonic Nanocavities Impacts Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Backgrounds

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has garnered substantial attention due to its ability to achieve single-molecule sensitivity by utilizing metallic nanostructures to amplify the exceedingly weak Raman scattering process. However, the introduction of metal nanostructures can induce a background continuum which can reduce the ultimate sensitivity of SERS in ways that are not yet well understood. Here, we investigate the impact of laser irradiation on both Raman scattering and backgrounds from self-assembled monolayers within nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities with variable geometry. We find that laser irradiation can reduce the height of the monolayer by inducing an irreversible change in molecular conformation. The resulting increased plasmon confinement in the nanocavities not only enhances the SERS signal, but also provides momentum conservation in the inelastic light scattering of electrons, contributing to the enhancement of the background continuum. The plasmon confinement can be modified by changing the size and the geometry of nanoparticles, resulting in a nanoparticle geometry-dependent background continuum in SERS. Our work provides new routes for further modifying the geometry of plasmonic nanostructures to improve SERS sensitivity.
