General synthesis of high-entropy single-atom nanocages for electrosynthesis of ammonia from nitrate

Given the growing emphasis on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and agricultural demand, there's a pressing need for decentralized and scalable ammonia production. Converting nitrate ions electrochemically, which are commonly found in industrial wastewater and polluted groundwater, into ammonia offers a viable approach for both wastewater treatment and ammonia production yet limited by low producibility and scalability. Here we report a versatile and scalable solution-phase synthesis of high-entropy single-atom nanocages (HESA NCs) in which Fe and other five metals-Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and In-are isolated via cyano-bridges and coordinated with C and N, respectively. Incorporating and isolating the five metals into the matrix of Fe resulted in Fe-C5 active sites with a minimized symmetry of lattice as well as facilitated water dissociation and thus hydrogenation process. As a result, the Fe-HESA NCs exhibited a high selectivity toward NH3 from the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate with a Faradaic efficiency of 93.4% while maintaining a high yield rate of 81.4 mg h-1 mg-1.

Methane-dependent denitrification by Methylomirabilis: an indirect nitrous oxide sink?

Methane-dependent complete denitrification primarily involves nitrate reduction to nitrite by ANME-2d archaea and nitrite reduction to dinitrogen by Methylomirabilis bacteria. 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis sinica' integrates the divisional labor. Physiological traits of this bacterium potentially enable the simultaneous reduction of N2O and CH4 emissions. This forum article explores these traits and possible microbial mechanisms for co-reduction, providing guidance for greenhouse gas management strategies.

Reaction Discovery Using Spectroscopic Insights from an Enzymatic C-H Amination Intermediate

Engineered hemoproteins can selectively incorporate nitrogen from nitrene precursors like hydroxylamine, O-substituted hydroxylamines, and organic azides into organic molecules. Although iron-nitrenoids are often invoked as the reactive intermediates in these reactions, their innate reactivity and transient nature have made their characterization challenging. Here we characterize an iron-nitrosyl intermediate generated from NH2OH within a protoglobin active site that can undergo nitrogen-group transfer catalysis, using UV-vis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) techniques. The mechanistic insights gained led to the discovery of aminating reagents─nitrite (NO2-), nitric oxide (NO), and nitroxyl (HNO)─that are new to both nature and synthetic chemistry. Based on the findings, we propose a catalytic cycle for C-H amination inspired by the nitrite reductase pathway. This study highlights the potential of engineered hemoproteins to access natural nitrogen sources for sustainable chemical synthesis and offers a new perspective on the use of biological nitrogen cycle intermediates in biocatalysis.

Self-enhanced localized alkalinity at the encapsulated Cu catalyst for superb electrocatalytic nitrate/nitrite reduction to NH3 in neutral electrolyte

The electrocatalytic nitrate/nitrite reduction reaction (eNOx-RR) to ammonia (NH3) is thermodynamically more favorable than the eye-catching nitrogen (N2) electroreduction. To date, the high eNOx-RR-to-NH3 activity is limited to strong alkaline electrolytes but cannot be achieved in economic and sustainable neutral/near-neutral electrolytes. Here, we construct a copper (Cu) catalyst encapsulated inside the hydrophilic hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (Cu@hNCNC). During eNOx-RR, the hNCNC shell hinders the diffusion of generated OH- ions outward, thus creating a self-enhanced local high pH environment around the inside Cu nanoparticles. Consequently, the Cu@hNCNC catalyst exhibits an excellent eNOx-RR-to-NH3 activity in the neutral electrolyte, equivalent to the Cu catalyst immobilized on the outer surface of hNCNC (Cu/hNCNC) in strong alkaline electrolyte, with much better stability for the former. The optimal NH3 yield rate reaches 4.0 moles per hour per gram with a high Faradaic efficiency of 99.7%. The strong-alkalinity-free advantage facilitates the practicability of Cu@hNCNC catalyst as demonstrated in a coupled plasma-driven N2 oxidization with eNOx-RR-to-NH3.

Hotspots lurking underwater: Insights into the contamination characteristics, environmental fates and impacts on biogeochemical cycling of microplastics in freshwater sediments

The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has become a significant concern, with freshwater sediments acting as terminal sinks, rapidly picking up these emerging anthropogenic particles. However, the accumulation, transport, degradation and biochemical impacts of MPs in freshwater sediments remain unresolved issues compared to other environmental compartments. Therefore, this paper systematically revealed the spatial distribution and characterization information of MPs in freshwater (rivers, lakes, and estuaries) sediments, in which small-size (<1 mm), fibers, transparent, polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) predominate, and the average abundance of MPs in river sediments displayed significant heterogeneity compared to other matrices. Next, the transport kinetics and drivers of MPs in sediments are summarized, MPs transport is controlled by the particle diversity and surrounding environmental variability, leading to different migration behaviors and transport efficiencies. Also emphasized the spatio-temporal evolution of MPs degradation processes and biodegradation mechanisms in sediments, different microorganisms can depolymerize high molecular weight polymers into low molecular weight biodegradation by-products via secreting hydrolytic enzymes or redox enzymes. Finally, discussed the ecological impacts of MPs on microbial-nutrient coupling in sediments, MPs can interfere with the ecological balance of microbially mediated nutrient cycling by altering community networks and structures, enzyme activities, and nutrient-related functional gene expressions. This work aims to elucidate the plasticity characteristics, fate processes, and potential ecological impact mechanisms of MPs in freshwater sediments, facilitating a better understanding of environmental risks of MPs in freshwater sediments.

3D porous conductive matrix based on phase-transited BSA and covalent coupling-stabilized transition ZnS-CNT for antifouling and on-site detection of nitrite in soil

Nitrite plays a critical role in a variety of nitrification and denitrification processes in the nitrogen cycle. Due to the high surface energy, tendency to aggregate, and poor conductivity, current nitrite ZnS-based sensing platform could not meet the need of on-site nitrite detection in smart agriculture. In order to address these issues, the carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT) was introduced to reduce the surface energy and prevented aggregation of ZnS, while ZnS-carboxylated CNT (ZnS-CNT) composite also provided excellent electrochemical conductivity. Furthermore, the introduction of phase transition BSA (PTB) created a three-dimensional porous conductive matrix without interfering with the mass transfer process of nitrite. The resulting sensing platform exhibited a linear detection range of 10 nM to 0.4 mM for nitrite, with a detection limit of 0.73 nM. And this sensing platform had the excellent antifouling ability to direct detection nitrite in real soil suspension. In addition, the sensing platform demonstrated remarkable resistance to interferences from pH variations, microbial presence, and organic pollutants that usually present in soil environment. Therefore, on-site detection of nitrite ions in soil environment was realized no needing complex pretreatments.

Observing C-N bond formation in plasma: a case study of benzene and dinitrogen coupling via an arylnitrenium ion intermediate

Directly fixing dinitrogen into value-added organics is one of the core issues, and yet a long-standing challenge, in chemical synthesis. In earlier discrete studies, direct amination of benzene with N2 has been achieved via non-thermal plasma-liquid reaction. Nonetheless, the reaction mechanism thereof remains elusive and the amination product was non-selective primarily including aniline and diphenylamine. Herein, non-thermal plasma reaction in combination with on-line mass spectrometry was employed to probe the reaction pathway by on-line detection of the transient intermediate and the stable amination product. The long-lived atomic nitrogen ions N+(3P) as well as the arylnitrenium ions' intermediacy were shown to play a pivotal role in the amination process, and the product distribution was affected by an external hydrogen source and likely dependent on the competing hydrogen abstraction reaction and intersystem crossing of the initially generated triplet state arylnitrenium ions. The mechanistic investigation in this work has implications for plasma-based nitrogen conversion into organics, but also has broader relevance for understanding the C-N coupling by other means directly with N2.

Facet-engineering strategy of phosphogypsum for production of mineral slow-release fertilizers with efficient nutrient fixation and delivery

Phosphogypsum (PG) presents considerable potential for agricultural applications as a secondary primary resource. However, it currently lacks environmentally friendly, economically viable, efficient, and sustainable reuse protocols. This study firstly developed a PG-based mineral slow-release fertilizer (MSRFs) by internalization and fixation of urea within the PG lattice via facet-engineering strategy. The molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the binding energy of urea to the (041) facet of PG surpassed that of the (021) and (020) facets, with urea's desorption energy on the (041) facet notably higher than on the (021) and (020) facets. Guided by these calculations, we selectively exposed the (041) dominant facet of PG, and then achieving complete urea fixation within the PG lattice to form urea-PG (UPG). UPG exhibited a remarkable 48-fold extension in N release longevity in solution and a 45.77% increase in N use efficiency by plants compared to conventional urea. The facet-engineering of PG enhances the internalization and fixation efficiency of urea for slow N delivery, thereby promoting nutrient uptake for plant growth. Furthermore, we elucidated the intricate interplay between urea and PG at the molecular level, revealing the involvement of hydrogen and ionic bonding. This specific bonding structure imparts exceptional thermal stability and water resistance to the urea within UPG under environmental conditions. This study has the potential to provide insights into the high-value utilization of PG and present innovative ideas for designing efficient MSRFs.

High-Performance Ammonia Electrosynthesis from Nitrate in a NaOH-KOH-H2O Ternary Electrolyte

A glut of dinitrogen-derived ammonia (NH3) over the past century has resulted in a heavily imbalanced nitrogen cycle and consequently, the large-scale accumulation of reactive nitrogen such as nitrates in our ecosystems has led to detrimental environmental issues. Electrocatalytic upcycling of waste nitrogen back into NH3 holds promise in mitigating these environmental impacts and reducing reliance on the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. Herein, we report a high-performance electrolyzer using an ultrahigh alkalinity electrolyte, NaOH-KOH-H2O, for low-cost NH3 electrosynthesis. At 3,000 mA/cm2, the device with a Fe-Cu-Ni ternary catalyst achieves an unprecedented faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.5±1.5 % under a low cell voltage of 3.83 V; whereas at 1,000 mA/cm2, an FE of 96.5±4.8 % under a cell voltage of only 2.40 V was achieved. Techno-economic analysis revealed that our device cuts the levelized cost of ammonia electrosynthesis by ~40 % ($30.68 for Fe-Cu-Ni vs. $48.53 for Ni foam per kmol-NH3). The NaOH-KOH-H2O electrolyte together with the Fe-Cu-Ni ternary catalyst can enable the high-throughput nitrate-to-ammonia applications for affordable and scalable real-world wastewater treatments.

Urea catalytic oxidation for energy and environmental applications

Urea is one of the most essential reactive nitrogen species in the nitrogen cycle and plays an indispensable role in the water-energy-food nexus. However, untreated urea or urine wastewater causes severe environmental pollution and threatens human health. Electrocatalytic and photo(electro)catalytic urea oxidation technologies under mild conditions have become promising methods for energy recovery and environmental remediation. An in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms of the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is important to design efficient electrocatalysts/photo(electro)catalysts for these technologies. This review provides a critical appraisal of the recent advances in the UOR by means of both electrocatalysis and photo(electro)catalysis, aiming to comprehensively assess this emerging field from fundamentals and materials, to practical applications. The emphasis of this review is on the design and development strategies for electrocatalysts/photo(electro)catalysts based on reaction pathways. Meanwhile, the UOR in natural urine is discussed, focusing on the influence of impurity ions. A particular emphasis is placed on the application of the UOR in energy and environmental fields, such as hydrogen production by urea electrolysis, urea fuel cells, and urea/urine wastewater remediation. Finally, future directions, prospects, and remaining challenges are discussed for this emerging research field. This critical review significantly increases the understanding of current progress in urea conversion and the development of a sustainable nitrogen economy.

Hollow mesoporous carbon supported Co-modified Cu/Cu2O electrocatalyst for nitrate reduction reaction

The electroreduction of nitrate (NO3-) pollutants to ammonia (NH3) provides a sustainable approach for both wastewater treatment and NH3 synthesis. However, electroreduction of nitrate requires multi-step electron and proton transfer, resulting in a sluggish reaction rate. Herein, we synthesized a Co-modified Cu/Cu2O catalyst supported on hollow mesoporous carbon substrates (Co/Cu/Cu2O-MesoC) by a one-step microwave-assisted reduction method. At -0.25 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), Co/Cu/Cu2O-MesoC shows a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 100 ± 1% in 0.1 M NO3-. Notably, the maximum NH3 yield rate (YieldNH3) reaches 6.416 ± 0.78 mmol mgcat-1h-1 at -0.45 V vs. RHE, which is much better than most of the previous reports. Electrochemical evaluation and in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy reveal that the addition of Co could promote water electrolysis, and the generated H* is involved in the following hydrogenation of intermediates, ultimately leading to faster kinetics and energetics during electrocatalytic conversion of NO3- to NH3. This synergetic electrocatalysis strategy opens a new avenue for the development of high-activity, selectivity, and stability catalysts.

Paenibacillus lentimorbus alleviates nutrient deficiency-induced stress in Zea mays by modulating root system architecture, auxin signaling, and metabolic pathways

KEY MESSAGE

Paenibacillus lentimorbus reprograms auxin signaling and metabolic pathways for modulating root system architecture to mitigate nutrient deficiency in maize crops. The arable land across the world is having deficiency and disproportionate nutrients, limiting crop productivity. In this study, the potential of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) viz., Pseudomonas putida, Paenibacillus lentimorbus, and their consortium was explored for growth promotion in maize (Zea mays) under nutrient-deficient conditions. PGPR inoculation improved the overall health of plants under nutrient-deficient conditions. The PGPR inoculation significantly improved the root system architecture and also induced changes in root cortical aerenchyma. Based on plant growth and physiological parameters inoculation with P. lentimorbus performed better as compared to P. putida, consortium, and uninoculated control. Furthermore, expression of auxin signaling (rum1, rul1, lrp1, rtcs, rtcl) and root hair development (rth)-related genes modulated the root development process to improve nutrient acquisition and tolerance to nutrient-deficient conditions in P. lentimorbus inoculated maize plants. Further, GC-MS analysis indicated the involvement of metabolites including carbohydrates and organic acids due to the interaction between maize roots and P. lentimorbus under nutrient-deficient conditions. These findings affirm that P. lentimorbus enhance overall plant growth by modulating the root system of maize to provide better tolerance to nutrient-deficient condition.

Bridging Together Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives in Single-Atom Alloys for Electrochemical Ammonia Production

Ammonia is an essential commodity in the food and chemical industry. Despite the energy-intensive nature, the Haber-Bosch process is the only player in ammonia production at large scales. Developing other strategies is highly desirable, as sustainable and decentralized ammonia production is crucial. Electrochemical ammonia production by directly reducing nitrogen and nitrogen-based moieties powered by renewable energy sources holds great potential. However, low ammonia production and selectivity rates hamper its utilization as a large-scale ammonia production process. Creating effective and selective catalysts for the electrochemical generation of ammonia is critical for long-term nitrogen fixation. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) have become a new class of materials with distinctive features that may be able to solve some of the problems with conventional heterogeneous catalysts. The design and optimization of SAAs for electrochemical ammonia generation have recently been significantly advanced. This comprehensive review discusses these advancements from theoretical and experimental research perspectives, offering a fundamental understanding of the development of SAAs for ammonia production.

Nitrogen (N) "supplementation, slow release, and retention" strategy improves N use efficiency via the synergistic effect of biochar, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and dicyandiamide

Irrational nitrogen (N) fertilizer management and application practices have led to a range of ecological and environmental problems that seriously threaten food security. In this study, an effective N fertilizer management strategy was established for improving N fertilizer utilization efficiency (NUE). Biochar, N2-fixing bacteria (Enterobacter cloacae), and a nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide, DCD) were simultaneously added to the soil during maize cultivation. The goal was to increase soil ammonium nitrogen content and NUE by regulating the relative abundance, enzyme activity, and functional gene expression of N conversion-related soil microbes. Biochar combined with E. cloacae and DCD significantly increased soil N content, and the NUE reached 46.69 %. The relative abundance of Burkholderia and Bradyrhizobium and the activity of nitrogenase increased significantly during biological N2 fixation. Further, the abundance of the nifH gene was significantly up-regulated. The relative abundance of Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Nitrospira, and Castellaniella and the activities of ammonia monooxygenase and nitrate reductase decreased significantly during nitrification and denitrification. Moreover, the abundance of the genes amoA and narG was significantly down-regulated. Correlation analyses showed that the increase in soil N2 fixation and the suppression of nitrification and denitrification reactions were the key contributors to the increase in soil N content and NUE. Biochar combined with E. cloacae and DCD synergistically enabled the supplementation, slow release, and retention of N, thus providing adequate N for maize growth. Thus, the combination of biochar, E. cloacae, and DCD is effective for mitigating the irrational application of N fertilizers and reducing N pollution.

The addition of discrimination inhibitors stimulations discrimination potential and N2O emissions were linked to predation among microorganisms in long term nitrogen application and straw returning systems

Introduction

Ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have been proven to be key microorganisms driving the ammonia oxidation process. However, under different fertilization practices, there is a lack of research on the impact of interaction between predators and AOA or AOB on nitrogen cycling at the multi-trophic level.

Methods

In this study, a network-oriented microscopic culture experiment was established based on four different long-term fertilization practices soils. We used the nitrification inhibitors 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxide-3-oxyl (PTIO) and 3, 4-Dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) inhibited AOA and AOB, respectively, to explore the impact of interaction between protists and AOA or AOB on nitrogen transformation.

Results

The results showed that long-term nitrogen application promoted the potential nitrification rate (PNR) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission, and significantly increased the gene abundance of AOB, but had no obvious effect on AOA gene abundance. DMPP significantly reduced N2O emission and PNR, while PTIO had no obvious effect on them. Accordingly, in the multi-trophic microbial network, Cercozoa and Proteobacteria were identified as keystone taxa of protists and AOB, respectively, and were significantly positively correlated with N2O, PNR and nitrate nitrogen. However, Nitrososphaerota archaeon as the keystone species of AOA, had an obvious negative linkage to these indicators. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that AOA and AOB may be competitors to each other. Protists may promote AOB diversity through direct trophic interaction with AOA.

Conclusion

The interaction pattern between protists and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms significantly affects potential nitrification rate and N2O emission, which has important implications for soil nitrogen cycle.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Antioxidant CeO2 doped with carbon dots enhance ammonia production by an electroactive Azospirillum humicireducens SgZ-5T

Microbial nitrogen fixation is a fundamental process in the nitrogen cycle, providing a continuous supply of biologically available nitrogen essential for life. In this study, we combined cerium oxide-doped carbon dots (CeO2/CDs) with electroactive nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azospirillum humicireducens SgZ-5T to enhance nitrogen fixation through ammonium production. Our research demonstrates that treatment of SgZ-5T cells with CeO2/CDs (0.2 mg mL-1) resulted in a 265.70% increase in ammonium production compared to SgZ-5T cells alone. CeO2/CDs facilitate electron transfer in the biocatalytic process, thereby enhancing nitrogenase activity. Additionally, CeO2/CDs reduce the concentration of reactive oxygen species in SgZ-5T cells, leading to increased ammonium production. The upregulation of nifD, nifH and nifK gene expression upon incorporation of CeO2/CDs (0.2 mg mL-1) into SgZ-5T cells supports this observation. Our findings not only provide an economical and environmentally friendly approach to enhance biological nitrogen fixation but also hold potential for alleviating nitrogen fertilizer scarcity.

Salinity change induces distinct climate feedbacks of nitrogen removal in saline lakes

Current estimations of nitrogen biogeochemical cycling and N2O emissions in global lakes as well as predictions of their future changes are overrepresented by freshwater datasets, while less consideration is given to widespread saline lakes with different salinity (representing salinization or desalinization). Here, we show that N2O production by denitrification is the main process of reactive nitrogen (Nr, the general abbreviations of NH4+-N, NO2--N and NO3--N) removal in hypersaline lake sediments (e.g. Lake Chaka). The integration of our field measurements and literature data shows that in response to natural salinity decrease, potential Nr removal increases while N2O production decreases. Furthermore, denitrification-induced N2 production exhibits higher salinity sensitivity than denitrification-induced N2O production, suggesting that the contribution of N2O to Nr removal decreases with decreasing salinity. This field-investigation-based salinity response model of Nr removal indicates that under global climate change, saline lakes in the process of salinization or desalination may have distinct Nr removal and climate feedback effects: salinized lakes tend to generate a positive climate feedback, while desalinated lakes show a negative feedback. Therefore, salinity change should be considered as an important factor in assessing future trend of N2O emissions from lakes under climate change.

Transition Metal Single-Atom Catalysts for the Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction: Mechanism, Synthesis, Characterization, Application, and Prospects

Excessive accumulation of nitrate in the environment will affect human health. To combat nitrate pollution, chemical, biological, and physical technologies have been developed recently. The researcher favors electrocatalytic reduction nitrate reaction (NO3 RR) because of the low post-treatment cost and simple treatment conditions. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer great activity, exceptional selectivity, and enhanced stability in the field of NO3 RR because of their high atomic usage and distinctive structural characteristics. Recently, efficient transition metal-based SACs (TM-SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for NO3 RR. However, the real active sites of TM-SACs applied to NO3 RR and the key factors controlling catalytic performance in the reaction process remain ambiguous. Further understanding of the catalytic mechanism of TM-SACs applied to NO3 RR is of practical significance for exploring the design of stable and efficient SACs. In this review, from experimental and theoretical studies, the reaction mechanism, rate-determining steps, and essential variables affecting activity and selectivity are examined. The performance of SACs in terms of NO3 RR, characterization, and synthesis is then discussed. In order to promote and comprehend NO3 RR on TM-SACs, the design of TM-SACs is finally highlighted, together with the current problems, their remedies, and the way forward.

Laser-induced nitrogen fixation

For decarbonization of ammonia production in industry, alternative methods by exploiting renewable energy sources have recently been explored. Nonetheless, they still lack yield and efficiency to be industrially relevant. Here, we demonstrate an advanced approach of nitrogen fixation to synthesize ammonia at ambient conditions via laser-induced multiphoton dissociation of lithium oxide. Lithium oxide is dissociated under non-equilibrium multiphoton absorption and high temperatures under focused infrared light, and the generated zero-valent metal spontaneously fixes nitrogen and forms a lithium nitride, which upon subsequent hydrolysis generates ammonia. The highest ammonia yield rate of 30.9 micromoles per second per square centimeter is achieved at 25 °C and 1.0 bar nitrogen. This is two orders of magnitude higher than state-of-the-art ammonia synthesis at ambient conditions. The focused infrared light here is produced by a commercial simple CO2 laser, serving as a demonstration of potentially solar pumped lasers for nitrogen fixation and other high excitation chemistry. We anticipate such laser-involved technology will bring unprecedented opportunities to realize not only local ammonia production but also other new chemistries .

A Broad Light-Harvesting Conjugated Oligoelectrolyte Enables Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation in a Bacterial Biohybrid

We report a rationally designed membrane-intercalating conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE), namely COE-IC, which endows aerobic N2 -fixing bacteria Azotobacter vinelandii with a light-harvesting ability that enables photosynthetic ammonia production. COE-IC possesses an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type conjugated core, which promotes visible light absorption with a high molar extinction coefficient. Furthermore, COE-IC spontaneously associates with A. vinelandii to form a biohybrid in which the COE is intercalated within the lipid bilayer membrane. In the presence of L-ascorbate as a sacrificial electron donor, the resulting COE-IC/A. vinelandii biohybrid showed a 2.4-fold increase in light-driven ammonia production, as compared to the control. Photoinduced enhancement of bacterial biomass and production of L-amino acids is also observed. Introduction of isotopically enriched 15 N2 atmosphere led to the enrichment of 15 N-containing intracellular metabolites, consistent with the products being generated from atmospheric N2 .

Supramolecular Enhancement of Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Catalyzed by Cobalt Porphyrin Organic Cages for Ammonia Electrosynthesis in Water

The electrochemical nitrate (NO3 - ) reduction reaction (NO3 RR) to ammonia (NH3 ) represents a sustainable approach for denitrification to balance global nitrogen cycles and an alternative to traditional thermal Haber-Bosch processes. Here, we present a supramolecular strategy for promoting NH3 production in water from NO3 RR by integrating two-dimensional (2D) molecular cobalt porphyrin (CoTPP) units into a three-dimensional (3D) porous organic cage architecture. The porphyrin box CoPB-C8 enhances electrochemical active site exposure, facilitates substrate-catalyst interactions, and improves catalyst stability, leading to turnover numbers and frequencies for NH3 production exceeding 200,000 and 56 s-1 , respectively. These values represent a 15-fold increase in NO3 RR activity and 200-mV improvement in overpotential for the 3D CoPB-C8 box structure compared to its 2D CoTPP counterpart. Synthetic tuning of peripheral alkyl substituents highlights the importance of supramolecular porosity and cavity size on electrochemical NO3 RR activity. These findings establish the incorporation of 2D molecular units into 3D confined space microenvironments as an effective supramolecular design strategy for enhancing electrocatalysis.

C(sp2)-H Hydroxylation via Catalytic 1,4-Ni Migration with N2O

Herein, we report a Ni-catalyzed C(sp2)-H hydroxylation of aryl bromides with N2O as an oxygen-atom donor. The reaction is enabled by a 1,4-Ni translocation that results in ipso/ortho difunctionalized products. Regioselectivity and stereocontrol are dictated by a judicious choice of the ligand backbone, thus giving access to either carbonyl or phenol derivatives and offering an opportunity to repurpose hazardous substances en route to valuable oxygen-containing building blocks.

Bringing Nitric Oxide to the Molybdenum World-A Personal Perspective

Molybdenum-containing enzymes of the xanthine oxidase (XO) family are well known to catalyse oxygen atom transfer reactions, with the great majority of the characterised enzymes catalysing the insertion of an oxygen atom into the substrate. Although some family members are known to catalyse the "reverse" reaction, the capability to abstract an oxygen atom from the substrate molecule is not generally recognised for these enzymes. Hence, it was with surprise and scepticism that the "molybdenum community" noticed the reports on the mammalian XO capability to catalyse the oxygen atom abstraction of nitrite to form nitric oxide (NO). The lack of precedent for a molybdenum- (or tungsten) containing nitrite reductase on the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle contributed also to the scepticism. It took several kinetic, spectroscopic and mechanistic studies on enzymes of the XO family and also of sulfite oxidase and DMSO reductase families to finally have wide recognition of the molybdoenzymes' ability to form NO from nitrite. Herein, integrated in a collection of "personal views" edited by Professor Ralf Mendel, is an overview of my personal journey on the XO and aldehyde oxidase-catalysed nitrite reduction to NO. The main research findings and the path followed to establish XO and AO as competent nitrite reductases are reviewed. The evidence suggesting that these enzymes are probable players of the mammalian NO metabolism is also discussed.

Intermetallic Single-Atom Alloy In-Pd Bimetallene for Neutral Electrosynthesis of Ammonia from Nitrate

Harvesting recyclable ammonia (NH₃) from the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO₃RR) offers a sustainable strategy to close the ecological nitrogen cycle from nitration contamination in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The emerging intermetallic single-atom alloys (ISAAs) are recognized to achieve the highest site density of single atoms by isolating contiguous metal atoms into single sites stabilized by another metal within the intermetallic structure, which holds promise to couple the catalytic benefits from intermetallic nanocrystals and single-atom catalysts for promoting NO₃RR. Herein, ISAA In-Pd bimetallene, in which the Pd single atoms are isolated by surrounding In atoms, is reported to boost neutral NO₃RR with a NH₃ Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 87.2%, a yield rate of 28.06 mg h^-1 mg_Pd^-1, and an exceptional electrocatalytic stability with increased activity/selectivity over 100 h and 20 cycles. The ISAA structure induces substantially diminished overlap of Pd d-orbitals and narrowed p-d hybridization of In-p and Pd-d states around the Fermi level, resulting in a stronger NO₃^- adsorption and a depressed energy barrier of the potential-determining step for NO₃RR. Further integrating the NO₃RR catalyst into a Zn-NO₃^- flow battery as the cathode delivers a power density of 12.64 mW cm^-2 and a FE of 93.4% for NH₃ production.

Bacterial nitric oxide reductase (NorBC) models employing click chemistry

Bacterial NO Reductase (NorBC or cNOR) is a membrane-bound enzyme found in denitrifying bacteria that catalyzes the two-electron reduction of NO to N₂O and water. The mechanism by which NorBC operates is highly debated, due to the fact that this enzyme is difficult to work with, and no intermediates of the NO reduction reaction could have been identified so far. The unique active site of NorBC consists of a heme b₃/non-heme Fe_B diiron center. Synthetic model complexes provide the opportunity to obtain insight into possible mechanistic alternatives for this enzyme. In this paper, we present three new synthetic model systems for NorBC, consisting of a tetraphenylporphyrin-derivative clicked to modified BMPA-based ligands (BMPA = bis(methylpyridyl)amine) that model the non-heme site in the enzyme. These complexes have been characterized by EPR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The reactivity with NO was then investigated, and it was found that the complex with the BMPA-carboxylate ligand as the non-heme component has a very low affinity for NO at the non-heme iron site. If the carboxylate functional group is replaced with a phenolate or pyridine group, reactivity is restored and formation of a diiron dinitrosyl complex was observed. Upon one-electron reduction of the nitrosylated complexes, following the semireduced pathway for NO reduction, formation of dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) was observed in all three cases, but no N₂O could be detected.

Detection and removal technologies for ammonium and antibiotics in agricultural wastewater: Recent advances and prospective

With the extensive development of industrial livestock and poultry production, a considerable part of agricultural wastewater containing tremendous ammonium and antibiotics have been indiscriminately released into the aquatic systems, causing serious harms to ecosystem and human health. In this review, ammonium detection technologies, including spectroscopy and fluorescence methods, and sensors were systematically summarized. Antibiotics analysis methodologies were critically reviewed, including chromatographic methods coupled with mass spectrometry, electrochemical sensors, fluorescence sensors, and biosensors. Current progress in remediation methods for ammonium removal were discussed and analyzed, including chemical precipitation, breakpoint chlorination, air stripping, reverse osmosis, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biological methods. Antibiotics removal approaches were comprehensively reviewed, including physical, AOPs, and biological processes. Furthermore, the simultaneous removal strategies for ammonium and antibiotics were reviewed and discussed, including physical adsorption processes, AOPs, biological processes. Finally, research gaps and the future perspectives were discussed. Through conducting comprehensive review, future research priorities include: (1) to improve the stabilities and adaptabilities of detection and analysis techniques for ammonium and antibiotics, (2) to develop innovative, efficient, and low cost approaches for simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics, and (3) to explore the underlying mechanisms that governs the simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics. This review could facilitate the evolution of innovative and efficient technologies for ammonium and antibiotics treatment in agricultural wastewater.

Weather-driven synergistic water-economy-environment regulation of farmland ecosystems

Farmland ecosystems (FEs) constitute the most important source of food production, and water is one of the most important factors influencing FEs. The amount of water can affect the yield and thus the economic efficiency. Water migration can generate environmental effects through the migration of fertilizers. Interlinkages and constraints exist between the water, economy and environment, which require synergistic regulation. Meteorological elements influence the reference crop uptake amount and thus the water cycle processes and are key drivers of regulation at the water-economy-environment nexus. However, the weather-driven, synergistic water-economy-environment regulation of FEs has not been sufficiently researched. As such, this paper employed a dynamic Bayesian prediction of the reference evapotranspiration (ET_o) and a quantitative characterization of the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) contents in agricultural crops and soils via field monitoring and indoor experimental analysis. Consequently, multiobjective optimization modeling was conducted to weigh the mutual trade-offs and constraints between water, the economy and the environment. The proposed method was verified via an example involving the modern agricultural high-tech demonstration park in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. The results indicated that (1) the effect of meteorological factors gradually decreased over time, but the prediction results were very accurate, and the higher the delay order of the dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) was, the more accurate the predictions; (2) ET_o was significantly driven by meteorological elements, and the most important meteorological factor influencing ET_o throughout the year was average temperature. When the average temperature was reduced by 10.0 %, ET_o was reduced by 1.4 %, the required amount of irrigation water was reduced by 4.9 %, and the economic benefits of a single cube of water increased by 6.3 %; (3) resource-economy-environment multidimensional synergy enabled a 12.8 % reduction in agricultural ecosystem pollutant emissions, while the economic benefits per unit of water increased by 8.2 % and the system synergy increased by 23.2 %.

Molecular and kinetic properties of copper nitrite reductase from Sinorhizobium meliloti 2011 upon substituting the interfacial histidine ligand coordinated to the type 2 copper active site for glycine

A copper-containing nitrite reductase catalyzes the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide in the denitrifier Sinorhizobium meliloti 2011 (SmNirK), a microorganism used as bioinoculant in alfalfa seeds. Wild type SmNirK is a homotrimer that contains two copper centers per monomer, one of type 1 (T1) and other of type 2 (T2). T2 is at the interface of two monomers in a distorted square pyramidal coordination bonded to a water molecule and three histidine side chains, H171 and H136 from one monomer and H342 from the other. We report the molecular, catalytic, and spectroscopic properties of the SmNirK variant H342G, in which the interfacial H342 T2 ligand is substituted for glycine. The molecular properties of H342G are similar to those of wild type SmNirK. Fluorescence-based thermal shift assays and FTIR studies showed that the structural effect of the mutation is only marginal. However, the kinetic reaction with the physiological electron donor was significantly affected, which showed a ∼ 100-fold lower turnover number compared to the wild type enzyme. UV-Vis, EPR and FTIR studies complemented with computational calculations indicated that the drop in enzyme activity are mainly due to the void generated in the protein substrate channel by the point mutation. The main structural changes involve the filling of the void with water molecules, the direct coordination to T2 copper ion of the second sphere aspartic acid ligand, a key residue in catalysis and nitrite sensing in NirK, and to the loss of the 3 N-O coordination of T2.

Regional Analysis of Nitrogen Flow within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Food Production Chain Inclusive of Trade

In the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, excess nitrogen has contributed to poor water quality, leading to nitrogen mitigation efforts to restore and protect the watershed. The food production system is a top contributor to this nitrogen pollution. While the food trade plays a vital role in distancing the environmental impacts of nitrogen use from the consumer, previous work on nitrogen pollution and management in the Bay is yet to carefully consider the effect of embedded nitrogen found in products (nitrogen mass within the product) imported and exported throughout the Bay. Our work advances understanding across this area by creating a mass flow model of nitrogen embedded in the food production chain throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed that separates phases of the production and consumption processes for crops, live animals, and animal products and considers commodity trade at each phase by combining aspects of both nitrogen footprint and nitrogen budget models. Also, by tracking nitrogen embedded in products imported and exported in these processes, we distinguished between direct nitrogen pollution and nitrogen pollution externalities (displaced N pollution from other regions) from outside of the Bay. We developed the model for the watershed and all its counties for major agricultural commodities and food products for 4 years 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 with a specific focus on 2012. Using the developed model, we determined the spatiotemporal drivers of nitrogen loss to the environment from the food chain within the watershed. Recent literature leveraging mass balance approaches has suggested that previous long-term declines in nitrogen surplus and improvements in nutrient use efficiency have stagnated or begun to reverse. Our results suggest that within the Chesapeake Bay, increased corn and wheat acreage and steadily increasing livestock/poultry production may have led to the stagnation in decreasing N loss trends from agricultural production observed over the past two decades. We also show that at the watershed scale, trade has reduced the food chain nitrogen loss by about 40 million metric tons. This model has the potential to quantify the effect of various decision scenarios, including trade, dietary choices, production patterns, and agricultural practices, on the food production chain nitrogen loss at multiple scales. In addition, the model's ability to distinguish between nitrogen loss from local and nonlocal (due to trade) sources makes it a potential tool to optimize regional domestic production and trade to meet local watershed's needs while minimizing the resulting nitrogen loss.

Highly distributed amorphous copper catalyst for efficient ammonia electrosynthesis from nitrate

Electroreduction of nitrate to ammonia, instead of N₂, is beneficial toward pollution control and value-added chemical production. Metallic catalysts have been developed for enhancing ammonia evolution efficiency from nitrate based on the crystalline state of the catalyst. However, the development of amorphous metallic catalysts with more active sites is still unexplored. Herein, a highly distributed amorphous Cu catalyst exhibiting an outstanding ammonia yield rate of 1.42 mol h^-1 g^-1 and Faradaic efficiency of 95.7%, much superior to crystallized Cu, is demonstrated for nitrate-reduction to ammonia. Experimental and computational results reveal that amorphizing Cu increases the number of catalytic sites, enhances the NO₃^- adsorption strength with flat adsorption configurations, and facilitates the potential determining step of *NO protonation to *NHO. The amorphous Cu catalyst shows good electrochemical stability at - 0.3 V, while crystallization weakens the activity at a more negative potential. This study confirms the crystallinity-activity relationship of amorphous catalysts and unveils their potential-limited electrochemical stability.

Defective Metal Oxides: Lessons from CO2 RR and Applications in NOx RR

Sluggish reaction kinetics and the undesired side reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction and self-reduction) are the main bottlenecks of electrochemical conversion reactions, such as the carbon dioxide and nitrate reduction reactions (CO₂ RR and NO₃ RR). To date, conventional strategies to overcome these challenges involve electronic structure modification and modulation of the charge-transfer behavior. Nonetheless, key aspects of surface modification, focused on boosting the intrinsic activity of active sites on the catalyst surface, are yet to be fully understood. Engingeering of oxygen vacancies (OVs) can tune surface/bulk electronic structure and improve surface active sites of electrocatalysts. The continuous breakthroughs and significant progress in the last decade position engineering of OVs as a potential technique for advancing electrocatalysis. Motivated by this, the state-of-the-art findings of the roles of OVs in both the CO₂ RR and the NO₃ RR are presented. The review starts with a description of approaches to constructing and techniques for characterizing OVs. This is followed by an overview of the mechanistic understanding of the CO₂ RR and a detailed discussion on the roles of OVs in the CO₂ RR. Then, insights into the NO₃ RR mechanism and the potential of OVs on NO₃ RR based on early findings are highlighted. Finally, the challenges in designing CO₂ RR/NO₃ RR electrocatalysts and perspectives in studying OV engineering are provided.

Reductive Coupling of Nitric Oxide by Cu(I): Stepwise Formation of Mono- and Dinitrosyl Species En Route to a Cupric Hyponitrite Intermediate

Transition-metal-mediated reductive coupling of nitric oxide (NO(g)) to nitrous oxide (N2O(g)) has significance across the fields of industrial chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, and environmental health. Herein, we elucidate a density functional theory (DFT)-supplemented mechanism of NO(g) reductive coupling at a copper-ion center, [(tmpa)CuI(MeCN)]+ (1) {tmpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine}. At -110 °C in EtOH (<-90 °C in MeOH), exposing 1 to NO(g) leads to a new binuclear hyponitrite intermediate [{(tmpa)CuII}2(μ-N2O22-)]2+ (2), exhibiting temperature-dependent irreversible isomerization to the previously characterized κ2-O,O'-trans-[(tmpa)2Cu2II(μ-N2O22-)]2+ (OOXray) complex. Complementary stopped-flow kinetic analysis of the reaction in MeOH reveals an initial mononitrosyl species [(tmpa)Cu(NO)]+ (1-(NO)) that binds a second NO molecule, forming a dinitrosyl species [(tmpa)CuII(NO)2] (1-(NO)2). The decay of 1-(NO)2 requires an available starting complex 1 to form a dicopper-dinitrosyl species hypothesized to be [{(tmpa)Cu}2(μ-NO)2]2+ (D) bearing a diamond-core motif, en route to the formation of hyponitrite intermediate 2. In contrast, exposing 1 to NO(g) in 2-MeTHF/THF (v/v 4:1) at <-80 °C leads to the newly observed transient metastable dinitrosyl species [(tmpa)CuII(NO)2] (1-(NO)2) prior to its disproportionation-mediated transformation to the nitrite product [(tmpa)CuII(NO2)]+. Our study furnishes a near-complete profile of NO(g) activation at a reduced Cu site with tripodal tetradentate ligation in two distinctly different solvents, aided by detailed spectroscopic characterization of metastable intermediates, including resonance Raman characterization of the new dinitrosyl and hyponitrite species detected.

Evidence of Downregulation in Atmospheric Nitrogen-Fixation Associated with Native Hawaiian Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) Cultivars

The study of nitrogen fixation in sugarcane has a long history that has demonstrated high potential but with substantial variation in results. This 32-month study sought to assess the response of nitrogen fixation associated with sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L. cvs. 'Akoki, Honua'ula, and 'Ula) to available soil nitrogen. Plants were grown in large pots of perlite along with a fixing and a non-fixing plant control and administered liquid fertigation with varying amounts of isotopically enriched nitrogen. Assessment of nitrogen fixation utilized nitrogen isotope tracing and acetylene reduction assay in the target and control plants. Isotope enrichment and acetylene reduction assay both indicated that nitrogen fixation peaked under low nitrogen application, and declined with higher application rates, with agreement between the two methods. These results suggest that sugarcane engages in a downregulation of nitrogen fixation under high nitrogen availability, potentially explaining the high variation in published experimental results. This suggests that nitrogen management and fertilization strategy can impact the atmospheric inputs of nitrogen in sugarcane cultivation, and the potential to improve nitrogen application efficiency in cropping systems utilizing sugarcane.

In Situ Confinement of Ultrasmall Metal Nanoparticles in Short Mesochannels for Durable Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction with High Efficiency and Selectivity

Electrocatalytic reduction is a sustainable approach for NO₃ ^- removal and high-value N-containing compounds manufacturing, which, however, is strongly obstructed by sluggish kinetics, low selectivity, and poor stability. Herein, the in situ confinement of ultrasmall CuPd alloy nanoparticles in mesochannels of conductive core-shell structured carbon nanotubes@mesoporous carbon substrates (CNTs@mesoC@CuPd) via a simple molecule-mediated interfacial assembly method is reported. As a catalyst for electrocatalytic NO₃ ^- reduction, the CNTs@mesoC@CuPd shows a splendid conversion efficiency (100%), N₂  selectivity (98%), cycling stability (>30 days), and removal capacity as high as 30 000 mg N g^-1 CuPd, which are much superior to most of the prior reports. Notably, experimental (in situ testing and isotopic labeling) and theoretical results unveil that bimetallic and monometallic catalysts for electrocatalytic NO₃ ^- reduction exhibit exclusive selectivity for N₂  and NH₃ , respectively. This in situ confinement strategy is universal for the synthesis of stable and highly accessible metallic catalysts, which opens an appealing way to synthesize advanced catalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability.

Non-rhizobia are the alternative sustainable solution for growth and development of the nonlegume plants

The major research focus for biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) has mostly been on typical rhizobia with legumes. But the newly identified non-rhizobial bacteria, both individually or in combination could also be an alternative for nitrogen supplementation in both legumes and nonlegume plants. Although about 90% of BNF is derived from a legume - rhizobia symbiosis, the non-legumes specially the cereals lack canonical nitrogen fixation system through root-nodule organogenesis. The non-rhizobia may colonize in the rhizosphere or present in endophytic/associative nature. The non-rhizobia are well known for facilitating plant growth through their potential to alleviate various stresses (salt, drought, and pathogens), acquisition of minerals (P, K, etc.), or by producing phytohormones. Bacterial symbiosis in non-legumes represents by the Gram-positive Frankia having a major contribution in overall fortification of usable nitrogenous material in soil where they are associated with their hosts. This review discusses the recent updates on the diversity and association of the non-rhizobial species and their impact on the growth and productivity of their host plants with particular emphasis on major economically important cereal plants. The future application possibilities of non-rhizobia for soil fertility and plant growth enhancement for sustainable agriculture have been discussed.

Emerging p-Block-Element-Based Electrocatalysts for Sustainable Nitrogen Conversion

Artificial nitrogen conversion reactions, such as the production of ammonia via dinitrogen or nitrate reduction and the synthesis of organonitrogen compounds via C-N coupling, play a pivotal role in the modern life. As alternatives to the traditional industrial processes that are energy- and carbon-emission-intensive, electrocatalytic nitrogen conversion reactions under mild conditions have attracted significant research interests. However, the electrosynthesis process still suffers from low product yield and Faradaic efficiency, which highlight the importance of developing efficient catalysts. In contrast to the transition-metal-based catalysts that have been widely studied, the p-block-element-based catalysts have recently shown promising performance because of their intriguing physiochemical properties and intrinsically poor hydrogen adsorption ability. In this Perspective, we summarize the latest breakthroughs in the development of p-block-element-based electrocatalysts toward nitrogen conversion applications, including ammonia electrosynthesis from N₂ reduction and nitrate reduction and urea electrosynthesis using nitrogen-containing feedstocks and carbon dioxide. The catalyst design strategies and the underlying reaction mechanisms are discussed. Finally, major challenges and opportunities in future research directions are also proposed.

Constructing Cu-CuO heterostructured skin on Cu cubes to promote electrocatalytic ammonia production from nitrate wastewater

Electroreducting nitrate (NO₃^-) into ammonia (NH₃), i.e. NO₃^-RA, can not only relieve NO₃^- pollution but also produce high value-added NH₃. Cu-based species have been taken as a promising catalyst for NO₃^-RA because of their relatively high Faradaic efficiency (FE), benefiting from the weak side hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, their NH₃ yield rates are still unsatisfactory due to the multiple electron paths of NO₃^-RA. Herein, we report a Cu cube with Cu-CuO heterostructured skin, prepared by electrochemically induced reconstruction from a Cu₂O cube. This novel Cu-based catalyst presents a mol-level NH₃ yield rate of 3.17 mol h^-1 g^-1 ranking at the top level among non-noble metal catalysts and an ultrahigh FE of 98.7 %. These excellent performances attribute to the Cu-CuO heterostructured skin of Cu cubes, which has favorable energy for the hydrogenation of *NO to *NOH during the NO₃^-RA process and an unfavorable one for HER. For the NO₃^- removal of real river water, this novel Cu-based catalyst presents a high NO₃^- removal rate of 95.5 % after the NO₃^-RA test for 12 h, resulting in a lower NO₃^- concentration than the maximum residual amount of NO₃^- in drinking water limited by WHO and China. This study provides a feasible strategy by the electrochemical reconstruction method to prepare superior Cu-based electrocatalysts with mol-level NO₃^-RA performances for the purification of nitrate wastewater.

Ni-Catalyzed Oxygen Transfer from N2O onto sp3-Hybridized Carbons

Herein we disclose a catalytic synthesis of cycloalkanols that harnesses the potential of N₂O as an oxygen transfer agent onto sp³-hybridized carbons. The protocol is distinguished by its mild conditions and wide substrate scope, thus offering an opportunity to access carbocyclic compounds from simple precursors even in an enantioselective manner. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the oxygen insertion event occurs at an alkylnickel species and that N₂O is the O transfer reagent.

Semicrystalline Conjugated Polymers with Well-Defined Active Sites for Nitrogen Fixation in a Seawater Electrolyte

Faradaic efficiency for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is often limited by low N₂ solubility in the electrolyte, while a large number of intimate contacts between the electrolyte and solid catalyst can also inevitably sacrifice many active sites for the NRR. Here, it is reported that a "quasi-gas-solid" interface formed in donor-acceptor-based conjugated polymers (CPs) is beneficial to boosting the NRR process and at the same time suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Of particular interest, it is found that a semicrystalline CP catalyst, SC-PBDT-TT, exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of up to 60.5% with a maximum NH₃ production rate of 16.8 µg h^-1 mg^-1 in a neutral-buffered seawater electrolyte. Molecular dynamics and COMSOL Multiphysics simulations reveal the origin of the observed high NRR performance arising from the presence of desirable crystal regions to resist the penetration of H₂ O molecules, leading to the formation of a "quasi-gas-solid" interface inside the catalyst for a favorable direct-contact between the catalyst and N₂ molecules. Furthermore, high-throughput computations, based on density functional theory, reveal the actual real active site for N₂ adsorption and reduction in SC-PBDT-TT. This work provides a new framework for optimizing NRR performance of metal-free catalysts by controlling their crystallinities.

Assessing the Relationship among Land Transfer, Fertilizer Usage, and PM2.5 Pollution: Evidence from Rural China

Concern for environmental issues is a crucial component in achieving the goal of sustainable development of humankind. Different countries face various challenges and difficulties in this process, which require unique solutions. This study investigated the relationship between land transfer, fertilizer usage, and PM_2.5 pollution in rural China from 2000 to 2019, considering their essential roles in agricultural development and overall national welfare. A cross section dependence test, unit root test, and cointegration test, among other methods, were used to test the panel data. A Granger causality test was used to determine the causal relationship between variables, and an empirical analysis of the impulse response and variance decomposition was carried out. The results show that the use of chemical fertilizers had a significant positive impact on PM_2.5 pollution, but the impact of land transfer on PM_2.5 pollution was negative. In addition, land transfer can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers through economies of scale, thus reducing air pollution. More specifically, for every 1% increase in fertilizer usage, PM_2.5 increased by 0.17%, and for every 1% increase in land transfer rate, PM_2.5 decreased by about 0.07%. The study on the causal relationship between land transfer, fertilizer usage, and PM_2.5 pollution in this paper is helpful for exploring environmental change—they are supplements and innovations which are based on previous studies and provide policy-makers with a basis and inspiration for decision-making.

Unraveling Nitrogen Fixing Potential of Endophytic Diazotrophs of Different Saccharum Species for Sustainable Sugarcane Growth

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is one of the world’s highly significant commercial crops. The amounts of synthetic nitrogen (N₂) fertilizer required to grow the sugarcane plant at its initial growth stages are higher, which increases the production costs and adverse environmental consequences globally. To combat this issue, sustainable environmental and economic concerns among researchers are necessary. The endophytic diazotrophs can offer significant amounts of nitrogen to crops through the biological nitrogen fixation mediated nif gene. The nifH gene is the most extensively utilized molecular marker in nature for studying N₂ fixing microbiomes. The present research intended to determine the existence of novel endophytic diazotrophs through culturable and unculturable bacterial communities (EDBCs). The EDBCs of different tissues (root, stem, and leaf) of five sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum officinarum L. cv. Badila, S. barberi Jesw.cv Pansahi, S. robustum, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb.cv Uba) were isolated and molecularly characterized to evaluate N₂ fixation ability. The diversity of EDBCs was observed based on nifH gene Illumina MiSeq sequencing and a culturable approach. In this study, 319766 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified from 15 samples. The minimum number of OTUs was recorded in leaf tissues of S. robustum and maximum reads in root tissues of S. spontaneum. These data were assessed to ascertain the structure, diversity, abundance, and relationship between the microbial community. A total of 40 bacterial families with 58 genera were detected in different sugarcane species. Bacterial communities exhibited substantially different alpha and beta diversity. In total, 16 out of 20 genera showed potent N₂-fixation in sugarcane and other crops. According to principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering (Bray–Curtis dis) evaluation of OTUs, bacterial microbiomes associated with root tissues differed significantly from stem and leaf tissues of sugarcane. Significant differences often were observed in EDBCs among the sugarcane tissues. We tracked and validated the plethora of individual phylum strains and assessed their nitrogenase activity with a culture-dependent technique. The current work illustrated the significant and novel results of many uncharted endophytic microbial communities in different tissues of sugarcane species, which provides an experimental system to evaluate the biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) mechanism in sugarcane. The novel endophytic microbial communities with N₂-fixation ability play a remarkable and promising role in sustainable agriculture production.

Structural characterization of the water-soluble porphyrin complexes [FeII(TPPS) (NO•)]4─ and [μ-O-([FeIII(TPPS)])2]8─

Iron water-soluble porphyrins have been long used as biomimetic compounds for modelling the active sites found in heme-enzymes. In this regard, the anionic porphyrin [Fe^III(TPPS)]^3─ and its coordination complexes have been repeatedly chosen as suitable water-soluble platforms for bioinorganic chemistry studies. In this work we report for the first time the crystal structure of the water-soluble nitrosyl complex [Fe^II(TPPS) (NO^•)]^4─ along with that of oxodimeric ferric species [μ-O-([Fe^III(TPPS)])₂]^8─.

Synthetic and biosynthetic routes to nitrogen-nitrogen bonds

The nitrogen-nitrogen bond is a core feature of diverse functional groups like hydrazines, nitrosamines, diazos, and pyrazoles. Such functional groups are found in >300 known natural products. Such N-N bond-containing functional groups are also found in significant percentage of clinical drugs. Therefore, there is wide interest in synthetic and enzymatic methods to form nitrogen-nitrogen bonds. In this review, we summarize synthetic and biosynthetic approaches to diverse nitrogen-nitrogen-bond-containing functional groups, with a focus on biosynthetic pathways and enzymes.
