Chitosan-based aerogels: A new paradigm of advanced green materials for remediation of contaminated water

Chitosan (CS) aerogels are highly porous (∼99 %), exhibit ultralow density, and are excellent sorbents for removing ionic pollutants and oils/organic solvents from water. Their abundant hydroxyl and amino groups facilitate the adsorption of ionic pollutants through electrostatic interaction, complexation and chelation mechanisms. Selection of suitable surface wettability is the way to separate oils/organic solvents from water. This review summarizes the most recent developments in improving the adsorption performance, mechanical strength and regeneration of CS aerogels. The structure of the paper follows the extraction of chitosan, preparation and sorption characteristics of CS aerogels for heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and oils/organic solvents, sequentially. A detailed analysis of the parameters that influence the adsorption/absorption performance of CS aerogels is carried out and their effective control for improving the performance is suggested. The analysis of research outcomes of the recently published data came up with some interesting facts that the unidirectional pore structure and characteristics of the functional group of the aerogel and pH of the adsorbate have led to the enhanced adsorption performance of the CS aerogel. Finally, the excerpts of the literature survey highlighting the difficulties and potential of CS aerogels for water remediation are proposed.

Unlocking groundwater desalination potential for agriculture with fertilizer drawn forward osmosis: prediction and performance optimization via RSM and ANN

The agricultural sector uses 70% of the world's freshwater. As clean water is extracted, groundwater quality decreases, making it difficult to grow crops. Brackish water desalination is a promising solution for agricultural areas, but the cost is a barrier to adoption. This study investigated the performance of the fertilizer drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) process for brackish water desalination using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. The RSM model was used to identify the optimal operating conditions, and the ANN model was used to predict the water flux (Jw) and reverse solute flux (Js). Both models achieved high accuracy, with RSM excelling in predicting Js (R2 = 0.9614) and ANN performing better for Jw (R2 = 0.9801). Draw solution (DS) concentration emerged as the most critical factor for both models, having a relative importance of 100% for two outputs. The optimal operating conditions identified by RSM were a DS concentration of 22 mol L-1, and identical feed solution (FS) and DS velocities of 8.1 cm s-1. This configuration yielded a high Jw of 4.386 LMH and a low Js of 0.392 gMH. Furthermore, the study evaluated the applicability of FDFO for real brackish groundwater. The results confirm FDFO's potential as a viable technology for water recovery in agriculture. The standalone FO system proves to be less energy-intensive than other desalination technologies. However, FO exhibits a low recovery rate, which may necessitate further dilution for fertigation purposes.

Acidified groundnut cake for enhanced bio adsorption of anionic textile dye Reactive Red 195

This study focuses on the improvement of bioremediation of textile dye Reactive Red 195 using agro-industrial waste, groundnut oil cake (GNOC) obtained after oil-pressing. The treatment of GNOC with 1 N H2SO4 had resulted in physiochemical changes on the insoluble porous adsorbent, which improved their adsorption efficiency. The dye removal efficiency increased from 55% to 94% on acidification of GNOC. The raw groundnut oil cake (RGNOC) and acid-treated groundnut oil cake (AGNOC) were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and zeta potential. The rate and efficiency of dye adsorption were examined using adsorption kinetics and isotherm models. The results confirm that acid-treated GNOC eliminates impurities, alter the surface functional groups, and significantly increase porous surface areas of RGNOC. The investigation of key factors such as contact time, initial concentration of dye, static/agitation impact, particle size, and adsorbent dose had significantly influenced adsorption capacity of GNOC. Adsorption of dye fits best into the Langmuir model and equilibrium data of dye on AGNOC was explained by psuedo-second-order reaction with maximum adsorption capacity of 12.65 mg/g. This emphasis AGNOC has a very excellent potential to remove the textile dye Reactive Red dye from industrial effluent.

Chitosan coated biomass waste-based magnetic hydrogel beads for the removal of methylene blue

Due to developing technology and increasing population, human needs have increased, and textile activities have gained momentum. Many synthetic dyestuffs are used to meet the needs in this field. In this study, a cheap, useful, innovative, environmentally friendly and sustainable adsorbent was developed for the removal of Methylene Blue(MB), which is one of the dyes that is harmful to the environment. In the cultivation of fruit trees, in addition to the product, very high amounts of by-products/waste (garbage, branches, bark, leaves, etc.) are produced. In this direction, fig tree wastes were immobilized with chitosan, made magnetic, and MB adsorption on the developed adsorbent was examined in a batch system. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker. Characterization of synthesized glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan-coated magnetic vegetable waste composite beads (g-CMBW) was carried out by SEM, EDX, FTIR and XRD. In the study, the effects of temperature (25-55 °C), pH (3.0-8.0), initial MB concentration (10-250mg/L), contact time (5-360min) and the amount of adsorbent (2-10 g/L) on MB adsorption with g-CMBW were examined. The optimum conditions obtained were determined as pH 6.0, temperature 25 °C, adsorbent amount 6 g/L, and contact time 120 min. The maximum adsorption capacity in MB removal using g-CMBW composite beads was calculated as 103.1 mg/g according to the Langmuir isotherm model. The temperature studies showed that the adsorption capacity decreased with increasing temperature, showing that the system was exothermic. In light of these results, it was determined that there are new promising adsorbents of natural origin, with higher adsorption capacity, lower cost, and alternatives to commercially used adsorbents in the removal of MB from aqueous media.

A new tannin-based adsorbent synthesized for rapid and selective recovery of palladium and gold: Optimization using central composite design

A tannin-based adsorbent was synthesized by pomegranate peel tannin powder modified with ethylenediamine (PT-ED) for the rapid and selective recovery of palladium and gold. To characterize PT-ED, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-Mapping), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used. Central composite design (CCD) was used for optimization. The kinetic, isotherm, interference of coexisting metal ions, and thermodynamics were studied. The optimal conditions, including Au (III) concentration = 30 m g L - 1 , Pd (II) concentration = 30 m g L - 1 , adsorbent mass = 26 mg, pH = 2, and time = 26 min with the sorption percent more than 99 %, were anticipated for both metals using CCD. Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order expressed the isotherm and kinetic adsorption of the both metals. The inhomogeneity of the adsorbent surface and the multi-layer adsorption of gold and palladium ions on the PT-ED surface are depicted by the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic investigation showed that P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions adsorption via PT-ED was an endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible process. The maximum adsorption capacity of P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions on PT-ED was 261.189 m g g - 1 and 220.277 m g g - 1 , respectively. The probable adsorption mechanism of P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions can be ion exchange and chelation. PT-ED (26 mg) recovered gold and palladium rapidly from the co-existing metals in the printed circuit board (PCB) scrap, including Ca, Zn, Si, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Ba, W, Co, Mn, and Mg with supreme selectivity toward gold and palladium. The results of this work suggest the use of PT-ED with high selectivity and efficiency to recover palladium and gold from secondary sources such as PCB scrap.

Enhancing Methylene Blue Dye Removal using pyrolyzed Mytella falcata Shells: Characterization, Kinetics, Isotherm, and Regeneration through Photolysis and Peroxidation

The potential of pyrolyzed Mytella falcata shells as an adsorbent for removing methylene blue dye molecules from aqueous solutions was investigated. The study found that the adsorbent produced at 600 °C of pyrolysis temperature, with an adsorbent mass of 0.5 g, particle diameter of 0.297-0.149 mm, and pH 12.0, demonstrated the highest dye molecule removal efficiency of 82.41%. The material's porosity was observed through scanning electron microscopy, which is favorable for adsorption, while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction analysis analyses confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate in the crystalline phases. The pseudo-second order model was found to be the best fit for the data, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism involves two steps: external diffusion and diffusion via the solid pores. The Redlich-Peterson isotherm model better represented the equilibrium data, and the methylene blue adsorption was found to be spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic. The hydrogen peroxide with UV oxidation was found to be the most efficient method of regeneration, with a regeneration percentage of 63% achieved using 600 mmol.L-1 of oxidizing agents. The results suggest that pyrolyzed Mytella falcata shells could serve as an ecologically viable adsorbent alternative, reducing the amount of waste produced in the local environment and at the same time removing pollutants from the water. The material's adsorption capacity remained almost constant in the first adsorption-oxidation cycles, indicating its potential for repeated use.

Modeling Cu removal from aqueous solution using sawdust based on response surface methodology

Copper (Cu), as one of the heavy metals widely used in industrial and agricultural activities, has a fundamental role in the pollution of water resources. Therefore, removing Cu from the aqueous solutions is considered an important challenge in the purification of water resources. Thus, in this study, sawdust with a diameter of 260-600 μm was used to remove Cu from the aqueous solutions. At first, sawdust was washed using distilled water and dried at laboratory temperature. Cu absorption experiments in closed conditions were performed based on the central composite design (CCD) model and with a range of initial Cu concentrations equal to 1-25 mgl-1. The amount of changes for other variables, including pH, time, and amount of sawdust, was equal to 2-10, 5-185 (min), and 5-25 (gl-1), respectively. After the completion of each test, the remaining Cu concentration in the solution was measured using atomic absorption, and the percentage of Cu removed was determined from the difference between the initial and final concentrations. The results showed that the CCD model has a favorable ability to predict Cu removal from the aqueous solutions (R2=0.90 and RSME=3.34%). Based on the Pareto analysis, contact time, the amount of sawdust, pH, and the Cu concentration had the most significant effect on removing Cu from the solution. Contact time, amount of sawdust, and pH were directly related, and the amount of dissolved Cu was proportional to the removal of Cu from the solution. Therefore, sawdust is desirable as a natural adsorbent, and the removal efficiency of Cu from solutions with low Cu concentration is very high (94%). In this regard, it is advised to use sawdust in the process of targeting Cu and heavy metals due to its low cost and availability.

Magnetic Hydrogel Beads as a Reusable Adsorbent for Highly Efficient and Rapid Removal of Aluminum: Characterization, Response Surface Methodology Optimization, and Evaluation of Isotherms, Kinetics, and Thermodynamic Studies

Biopolymers such as alginate and gelatin have attracted much attention because of their exceptional adsorption properties and biocompatibility. The magnetic hydrogel beads produced and used in this study had a core structure composed of magnetite nanoparticles and gelatin and a shell structure composed of alginate. The combination of the metal-ion binding ability of alginate and the mechanical strength of gelatin in magnetic hydrogel beads presents a new approach for the removal of metal from water sources. The beads were designed for aluminum removal and fully characterized using various methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, microcomputed tomography, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Statistical experimental designs were employed to optimize the parameters of the adsorption and recovery processes. Plackett-Burman Design, Box-Behnken Design, and Central Composite Design were used for identifying the significant factors and optimizing the parameters of the adsorption and recovery processes, respectively. The optimum parameters determined for adsorption are as follows: pH: 4, contact time: 30 min, adsorbent amount: 600 mg; recovery time: reagent 1 M HNO3; and contact time: 40 min. The adsorption process was described by using the Langmuir isotherm model. It reveals a homogeneous bead surface and monolayer adsorption with an adsorption capacity of 5.25 mg g-1. Limit of detection and limit of quantification values were calculated as 4.3 and 14 μg L-1, respectively. The adsorption process was described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which assumes that chemisorption is the rate-controlling mechanism. Thermodynamic studies indicate that adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorbent was reusable for 10 successive adsorption-desorption cycles with a quantitative adsorption of 98.2% ± 0.3% and a recovery of 99.4% ± 2.6%. The minimum adsorbent dose was determined as 30 g L-1 to achieve quantitative adsorption of aluminum. The effects of the inorganic ions were also investigated. The proposed method was applied to tap water and carboy water samples, and the results indicate that magnetic hydrogel beads can be an effective and reusable bioadsorbent for the detection and removal of aluminum in water samples. The recovery values obtained by using the developed method were quantitative and consistent with the results obtained from the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer.

Potential use of dry powder of Vossia cuspidata (Roxb.) Griff. rhizomes and leaves in methylene blue dye remediation

Phytoremediation is a promising, cost-effective, and eco-friendly process for wastewater treatment. Herein, the dry biomasses of Vossia cuspidata (Roxb.) Griff. leaves (PL) and rhizomes including aerial stems (PR) were used to effectively remediate methylene blue (MB) dyes. Interestingly, the adsorption uptake and removal efficiency of MB by PR were higher than those of PL; exceeding 97 and 91% in 35 and 25 min for 0.1 and 0.4 g/L MB, respectively. The MB diffusion within the PL and PR was insignificant and the adsorption kinetics was principally controlled by the surface MB-adsorbent interaction, as consistently approved by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. In addition, the adsorption increased rapidly with the plant dosage with high dependence on the initial MB concentration. Moreover, the impact of shaking speed on the adsorption was minor but temperature played a critical role where the highest efficiencies were recorded at 30 and 40 °C on PL (91.9%) and PR (93.3%), respectively. The best removal efficiencies were attained with PR at pH 6, but with PL at pH 8. The Temkin isotherm could perfectly simulate the experimental data (R2 > 0.97); suggesting a linear decrease of the adsorption heat of MB with the plant coverage.

Rapid adsorptive removal of chromium from wastewater using walnut-derived biosorbents

Contamination of water resources by industrial effluents containing heavy metal ions and management of solid waste from agricultural and food industries is a serious issue. This study presents the valorization of waste walnut shells as an effective and environment-friendly biosorbent for sequestrating Cr(VI) from aqueous media. The native walnut shell powder (NWP) was chemically modified with alkali (AWP) and citric acid (CWP) to obtain modified biosorbents with abundant availability of pores as active centers, as confirmed by BET analysis. During batch adsorption studies, the process parameters for Cr(VI) adsorption were optimized at pH 2.0. The adsorption data were fitted to isotherm and kinetic models to compute various adsorption parameters. The adsorption pattern of Cr(VI) was well explained by the Langmuir model suggesting the adsorbate monolayer formation on the surface of the biosorbents. The maximum adsorption capacity, q_m, for Cr(VI) was achieved for CWP (75.26 mg/g), followed by AWP (69.56 mg/g) and NWP (64.82 mg/g). Treatment with sodium hydroxide and citric acid improved the adsorption efficiency of the biosorbent by 4.5 and 8.2%, respectively. The endothermic and spontaneous adsorption was observed to trail the pseudo-second-order kinetics under optimized process parameters. Thus, the chemically modified walnut shell powder can be an eco-friendly adsorbent for Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Extractability of Rice Husk Waste Using Green Gamma Radiation for Dye Elimination in Laboratory-Scale Sorption System: Equilibrium Isotherm and Kinetic Analysis

Nowadays, the use of natural materials and especially "waste" valorization has evolved and attracted the wide attention of scientists and academia. In this regard, the use of rice husk (RH) powder as a naturally abundant and cheap byproduct material is gaining superior attention. However, improving the physicochemical properties of such RH is still under research. In the current investigation, the modification of rice husk (RH) via γ-irradiation has shown to be a promising green tool to meet such a need. Clean, prepared, powdered RH samples were subjected to various γ-radiation doses, namely 5, 10, 15 and 25 kGy, and the corresponding samples were named as RH-0, RH-5, RH-10, RH-15, RH-15 and RH-25. Then, the samples were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After irradiation, the samples showed an increase in their surface roughness upon increasing the γ-radiation up to 15 kGy. Furthermore, the sorption capacity of the irradiated RH samples was investigated for eliminating Urolene Blue (UB) dye as a model pharmaceutical effluent stream. The highest dye uptake was recorded as 14.7 mg/g, which corresponded to the RH-15. The adsorption operating parameters were also investigated for all of the studied systems and all adsorbents showed the same trend, of a superior adsorption capacity at pH 6.6 and high temperatures. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were also applied for UB adsorption and an adequate fitted isotherm model was linked with Langmuir fitting. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best fit for the adsorption data. Experimental assays confirmed that the UB dye could be successfully eradicated feasibly from the aqueous stream via a sustainable green methodology.

Optimization of Cd (II) removal from aqueous solution by natural hydroxyapatite/bentonite composite using response surface methodology

Toxic cadmium (Cd) was removed from water using eggshell-based hydroxyapatite (HAp) grafted bentonite (HAp/bentonite) composite through a straightforward chemical synthesis route. The as-prepared adsorbents were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET). Optimization of the initial adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time—all of which affect the adsorption process—was performed using the central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM). 99.3 percent adsorptive removal efficiency was observed at an initial concentration of 61.58 mg/L of Cd (II), with an adsorbent dosage of 1.58 g, a solution pH of 5.88, and a contact time of 49.63 min. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, and the multiple correlation coefficient (R2) was found to be 0.9915 which confirms the significance of the predicted model. The Langmuir isotherm model best represented the adsorption isotherm data, which also predicted a maximum sorption capacity of 125.47 mg/g. The kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second order model.

Efficient Removal of Basic Fuchsin from Synthetic Medical Wastewater and Competitive Adsorption in the Mixture

The Ziehl-Neelsen stain is a mixture of Basic Fuchsin (BF), phenol (Ph), and methylene blue. It is used to stain the cell walls of Mycobacterium species. In this study, Basic Fuchsin was efficiently removed from synthetic wastewater using natural clay of Gankawa (GC) from Sulaimanyah city, and the effect of the presence of high concentrations of phenol in the adsorption mixture is demonstrated. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), N2 gas adsorption analyzer, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the natural clay. The clay was found to be mostly calcite, with a minor percentage of smectite, and contaminated with low percentages of illite. The adsorption kinetics show a relatively fast equilibration time (60-70 minutes). A second-order pseudokinetic model better fits the experimental kinetic data. The effect of the initial pH of the solution mixture was negligible at the experimental concentration range of the study. Freundlich and Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm models were applied to the equilibrium experimental data using nonlinear regression curve fitting. Both kinetics and isotherm studies point to a chemical adsorption mechanism for the process. For adsorption in the mixture, phenol molecules were found to compete with BF molecules for the active adsorption sites, while a synergetic effect of BF exists on phenol adsorption. As a naturally abundant cheap material, GC shows a superior adsorption capacity toward BF (287.0 mg g-1) over all natural materials and most of the synthetic or modified materials found in the literature.

Application of Walnut Shell Biowaste as an Inexpensive Adsorbent for Methylene Blue Dye: Isotherms, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Modeling

This research aimed to assess the adsorption properties of raw walnut shell powder (WNSp) for the elimination of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous medium. The initial MB concentration (2–50 mg/L), the mass of the biomaterial (0.1–1 g/L), the contact time (10–120 min), the medium’s pH (2–12), and the temperature (25–55 °C) were optimized as experimental conditions. A maximum adsorption capacity of 19.99 mg/g was obtained at an MB concentration of 50 mg/L, a medium pH of 6.93 and a temperature of 25 °C, using 0.2 g/L of WNSp. These conditions showed that the MB dye elimination process occurred spontaneously. Different analytical approaches were used to characterize the WNSp biomaterial, including functional groups involved in MB adsorption, the surface characteristics and morphological features of the WNSp before and after MB uptake, and identification of WNSp based on their diffraction pattern. The experimental isotherm data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models for the adsorption of MB dye. The corresponding values of parameter RL of Langmuir were between 0.51 and 0.172, which confirmed the WNSp’s favorable MB dye adsorption. The experimental kinetic data were examined, and the pseudo-second-order model was shown to be more suitable for describing the adsorption process, with an excellent determination coefficient (R2 = 0.999). The exchanged standard enthalpy (H° = −22.456 KJ.mol−1) was calculated using the van ‘t Hoff equation, and it was proven that the adsorption process was exothermic. The spontaneous nature and feasibility of the MB dye adsorption process on WNSp were validated by negative standard enthalpy values (G°) ranging from −2.580 to −0.469 at different temperatures. It was established that WNSp may be employed as a novel, effective, low-cost adsorbent for the elimination of methylene blue in aqueous solutions.

Green route synthesis and characterization of β-Bi2O3/SiO2 and β-Bi2O3/Bi2O2.75/SiO2 using Juglans regia L. shell aqueous extract and photocatalytic properties for the degradation of RB-5

Background

Photocatalyst oxides added with silicon improve their photocatalytic properties. In this research, nanostructured β-Bi2O3/SiO2 and β-Bi2O3/Bi2O2.75/SiO2 were obtained by means of a green method mediated by the using the aqueous extract of J. regia shell as the source of reducing biomolecules and as a natural source of plant silicon.

Method

The β-Bi2O3/SiO2 and β-Bi2O3/Bi2O2.75/SiO2 nanostructures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was measured by the degradation of Reactive Black 5 dye (RB-5).

Results

FT-IR and XPS demonstrated the presence of plant silicon in the bismuth oxide photocatalysts. HR-TEM showed that the crystal size of the as-synthesized materials is ~ 25 nm and revealed that the β-Bi2O3 synthesized with ground shell extract and heat-treated at 300 °C contains the Bi2O2.75 phase. Good photocatalytic activity was found in all the studied materials; particularly, the heat-treated nanostructures showed excellent properties resulting in 92% degradation of RB-5 under UV–Vis light after 15 min of exposure, and 98% after 180 min.

Conclusions

The findings of this research suggest that the metabolites coating the Bi2O3, which generate a large amount of hydroxyl radicals, the plant silicon content, and the crystalline defects conferred by the synthesis medium, all contribute to the improved degradation of the azo dye, providing the nanostructures with better photocatalytic activity.

Linear and Nonlinear Regression Analysis for the Adsorption of Remazol Dye by Romanian Brewery Waste By-Product, Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Earth’s water balance and economy are becoming increasingly fragile due to overpopulation, global warming, severe environmental pollution and both surface and groundwater pollution. Therefore, it is essential to find solutions to the problems of water scarcity and water pollution. In this research, an experiment was designed to optimize the technique for the adsorption of Remazol Red F3B (RR) dye by lyophilized brewery yeast waste from the fermentation process. Moreover, we proved that brewery yeast is a great adsorbent. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out for optimization of different initial parameters, such as initial dye concentration (5–1000 mg/L), amount of yeast (0.5–2.5 g), pH (3–11) and temperature (20 to 40 °C). Furthermore, the structure and elemental composition of the adsorbent were analyzed with SEM, EDS and FTIR before and after biosorption. The best fits for the mathematical isotherm models in the case of the linear form were the Langmuir I and Freundlich models (R² = 0.923 and R² = 0.921) and, for the nonlinear form, the Khan model (R² = 0.9996) was the best fit. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed the best fit for both linear (plotting t/q_t vs. t) and nonlinear forms, are the calculated q_e values were similar to the experimental data.

An Effective Biomass for the Adsorption of Methylene Blue Dye and Treatment of River Water

Neolamarckia cadamba leaves were used as an adsorbent for methylene blue removal as well as for the reduction in the water quality parameters of the sewage belts of Yamuna River in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. A variety of water quality parameters were assessed, including chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, conductivity, hardness, pH, and temperature. A great deal of degradation in the water quality parameters collected from three locations within the Yamuna River in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, has been observed by treating with Neolamarckia cadamba leaves. The adsorption studies were carried out by the batch method, and the effect of various parameters such as contact time, pH, initial concentration, and temperature was assessed. The maximum removal of methylene blue was obtained at pH 5 after 120 minutes of equilibrium time. In addition to fitting the Langmuir isotherm most accurately, the adsorbent also followed pseudokinetics of the second order. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of used biomass was 101 mg/g using 50 mg/L methylene blue solution. It is evident from the thermodynamic data that the adsorption is exothermic. Also, the spontaneity of the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate decreases with temperature. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the adsorbent. SEM images revealed that the biomass consisted of irregular spherical lumps with a porous structure, which provided effective adsorption sites. A chemical composition analysis of the biomass by EDAX shows that the chemical composition of oxygen and carbon decreases, whereas nitrogen’s chemical composition increases.

Pyrolysis of rubber seed pericarp biomass treated with sulfuric acid for the adsorption of crystal violet and methylene green dyes: an optimized process

In this study, the biomass of rubber seed pericarp was first treated with sulfuric acid and then its activated carbon was formed by the pyrolysis process. As produced acid-treated activated carbon of chosen biomass was then used for the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) and methylene green (MG) from the colored aqueous solution. The adsorbent was exposed to several characterization methods to know its structural and morphological behaviors before and after CV and MG adsorption. The adsorbent was found to be mesoporous having a surface area of 59.517 m²/g. The effect of pH, time, and concentration was assessed while various isotherm and kinetics models were employed to know the adsorption insight. The optimum conditions were at pH 8, within 30 min, 50 mg/L concentration, and 0.06 gm dose. The adsorption data (the maximum adsorption capacity for CV and MG were found to be 302.7 and 567.6 mg/g, respectively) was validated by fitting in a response surface statistical methodology and the positive interactions between the studied factors were found. The adsorption was mainly belonging to the electrostatic attraction of the dye molecules. The study proves that the used adsorbent is economical and an excellent source of treating wastewater.

Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue Dye Using Biowaste Materials: Barley Bran and Enset Midrib Leaf

In this study, several biowaste materials are screened for adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) from synthetic water. Among the tested adsorbents, barley (Hordeum vulgare) bran (BB) and enset (Ensete ventricosum midrib leaf, EVML) were selected for further evaluation of MB (a model cationic dye) adsorption. Batch MB adsorption performance of BB and EVML adsorbents was significantly high in a wide pH range (4-9). The well fitting of experimental data with pseudosecond-order kinetic model suggests a monolayer adsorption of MB. The MB adsorption onto both adsorbents was fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum MB adsorption capacities of 63.2 mg/g (BB) and 35.5 mg/g (EVML). The biowaste materials exhibit considerable adsorption capacity for cationic dye (MB), perform well under acidic and basic conditions, and are reusable. Therefore, the use of these materials as adsorbents may have an environmental benefit in terms of the conversion of wastes into valuable materials. Further studies are suggested to investigate the performance of these adsorbents in a continuous mode using real wastewater.

A hydrostable CuII coordination network prepared hydrothermally as a "turn-on" fluorescent sensor for S2- and a selective adsorbent for methylene blue

The effective monitoring of water pollution and further purification are pressing yet challenging issues for guaranteeing the health of human beings and the stabilization of ecological systems. For this purpose, the development of efficient sensing and adsorption materials as a result of supramolecular interactions, including coordination and H-bonding etc., have been attracting increasing attention. With the aid of a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy, a new nonporous 2D CuII coordination network, [Cu2L(H2O)2]n (donated as CuCP), based on H4L, where H4L = 4-(4-(3,5-di-carboxy-pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, was afforded hydrothermally. Structural analysis indicated that CuCP featured a wrinkled network similar to the ancient Chinese folding screens and constructed by the fully deprotonated ligand L4- with the coordination mode of bis(μ2-η1:η1:η2) and penta-coordinated Cu2+, which could be further upgraded to a supramolecular 3D framework as a result of the synergism of multiple C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The hydrostability of CuCP could be maintained within a wide pH range from 2 to 12 as verified by PXRD determination, endowing it with potential environmental applications. Thanks to the combination of the soft Lewis acidity of Cu2+ and its large conjugated structure, CuCP could be used as a turn-on fluorescence sensor for S2- and exhibited a different fluorescence response when Na2S, (NH4)2S or H2S were incorporated, even in actual water samples. The sensing mechanisms were disclosed in detail by the combination of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, CuCP was shown to be a selective and recoverable adsorbent with a maximum adsorption capacity of 379 mg g-1 in 60 minutes for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption mechanism could be a combination of π⋯π stacking, n⋯π interaction, aggregation effects and Soft and Hard Acid-Base theory (HSAB). The results presented herein open up new perspectives for CuII species in environmental applications.

How the Carbonization Time of Sugarcane Biomass Affects the Microstructure of Biochar and the Adsorption Process?

Biochars (BCs) are very versatile adsorbents, mainly, in the effectiveness of adsorption of organic and inorganic compounds in aqueous solutions. Here, the sugarcane biomass (SCB) was used to produce biochar at different carbonization times: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 h, denominated as BC1, BC2, BC3, BC4, and BC5, respectively. The superficial reactivity was studied with adsorption equilibrium experiments and kinetics models; Methylene Blue (MB) was used as adsorbate at different pH values, concentrations, and temperatures. In summary, the carbonization time provides the increase of superficial area, with exception of BC4, which decreased. Equilibrium studies showed inflection points and fluctuations with different initial dye concentration and temperature; SCB showed the best adsorption capacity compared to the BCs at the three temperatures tested, varying with the increase of MB concentration, suggesting the dependence of these two main factors on the adsorption process. The proposed adsorption mechanism suggests the major influence of Coulomb interactions, H-bonding, and π-interactions on the adsorption of MB onto adsorbents, evidencing that the adsorption is led by physical adsorption. Therefore, the results led to the use of the SCB without carbonization at 200 °C, saving energy and more adsorbent mass, considering that the carbonization influences weight loss. This study has provided insights of the use of SCB in MB dye adsorption as a low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbent.

The Dependency of Kinetic Parameters as a Function of Initial Solute Concentration: New Insight from Adsorption of Dye and Heavy Metals onto Humic-Like Modified Adsorbents

Kinetics parameters are the essential issue in the design of water treatment systems for pollutants uptake. Though numerous studies have identified the boundary conditions that exert influence on the kinetics parameters, the influence of the dynamic initial solute concentration (C0) to the kinetic parameters generated from fitting kinetics model to experimental data has not been investigated thoroughly. This study revealed a change in the kinetics parameter value due to changes in the adsorption mechanism as an effect of dynamic C0. It was observed that at higher C0 the adsorbed solute at equilibrium (qe) increases and it takes longer time to reach equilibrium. As a result, the kinetics rate constant (k) calculated from adsorption reaction model (Lagergren, Ho, Santosa, and RBS) was decreased. In general, Ho model exhibit higher correlation coefficient value (R2) among the other model at low C0. At high C0, Ho’s R2 tend to decrease while the Lagergren and RBS’s R2 was increased. The amendment mechanism from external mass transport to intra-particle diffusion as a rate limiting step was evidenced by Boyd and Weber-Morris kinetics model. Further, the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent used in this work: chitin and Fe3O4 modified horse dung humic acid (HDHA-Fe3O4 and HDHA-Ch, respectively) with the solute: Pb(II), Methylene Blue (MB), and Ni(II) was deeply discussed in this paper. Twist and lock: nutshell structures for high strength and energy absorption

Nutshells achieve remarkable properties by optimizing structure and chemistry at different hierarchical levels. Probing nutshells from the cellular down to the nano- and molecular level by microchemical and nanomechanical imaging techniques reveals insights into nature's packing concepts. In walnut and pistachio shells, carbohydrate and lignin polymers assemble to form thick-walled puzzle cells, which interlock three-dimensionally and show high tissue strength. Pistachio additionally achieves high-energy absorption by numerous lobes interconnected via ball-joint-like structures. By contrast, the three times more lignified walnut shells show brittle LEGO-brick failure, often along the numerous pit channels. In both species, cell walls (CWs) show distinct lamellar structures. These lamellae involve a helicoidal arrangement of cellulose macrofibrils as a recurring motif. Between the two nutshell species, these lamellae show differences in thickness and pitch angle, which can explain the different mechanical properties on the nanolevel. Our in-depth study of the two nutshell tissues highlights the role of cell form and their interlocking as well as plant CW composition and structure for mechanical protection. Understanding these plant shell concepts might inspire biomimetic material developments as well as using walnut and pistachio shell waste as sustainable raw material in future applications.

Green synthesis, characterization, application and functionality of nitrogen-doped MgO/graphene nanocomposite

A facile, feasible, and green synthesis via an electrochemical exfoliation process was applied to synthesize nitrogen-doped MgO/graphene nanocomposite (N-MgO/G). The N-MgO/G nanocomposite was characterized by several analytical techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and elemental mapping analysis. N-MgO/G nanocomposite was then applied to adsorb lead metal ions (Pb²⁺) from aqueous solutions. The N-MgO/G nanocomposite demonstrated a remarkably high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (294.12 mg/g) for Pb²⁺ ions under the optimum experimental conditions at a pH of 5.13, time of 35 min, dose of 0.025 g, the concentration of 400 mg/L, and a temperature of 36 °C. Adsorption kinetics results fitted with a pseudo-second-order model and a thermodynamic study showed that Pb²⁺ adsorption is an endothermic process. The practical application of N-MgO/G was also investigated to test its applicability in real water samples collected from different sources such as deionized water, tap water, wastewater, and river water.

Characterization and use of a lignin sample extracted from Eucalyptus grandis sawdust for the removal of methylene blue dye

A lignin sample was extracted from Eucalyptus grandis sawdust, by the Klason method, and used as adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. By using a set of complementary analytical tools, the lignin appeared to be constituted of oxygenated functional groups and aromatic moieties, while showing a specific surface area of 20 m² g^-1 and polydisperse particles. Different experimental conditions with various solid to liquid ratio, pH, as well as other external experimental parameters were investigated for the removal of MB by the lignin sample. The experimental adsorption data at the equilibrium were properly fitted by Langmuir model, while adsorption kinetical isotherms were correctly adjusted by the pseudo-second order model. The MB removal by lignin was spontaneous involving physisorption mechanisms leading to a saturation of the adsorption sites with a maximum adsorbed amount of about 32 mg g^-1. The data acquired in this study also emphasized the interests to use lignin as potential adsorbent in the light of its properties for the removal of cationic dyes, including MB, with possible recycling and reuse cycles of lignin without any significant loss of its properties.

Authentication and Provenance of Walnut Combining Fourier Transform Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy with Machine Learning Algorithms

Different varieties and geographical origins of walnut usually lead to different nutritional values, contributing to a big difference in the final price. The conventional analytical techniques have some unavoidable limitations, e.g., chemical analysis is usually time-expensive and labor-intensive. Therefore, this work aims to apply Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy coupled with machine learning algorithms for the rapid and accurate classification of walnut species that originated from ten varieties produced from four provinces. Three types of models were developed by using five machine learning classifiers to (1) differentiate four geographical origins; (2) identify varieties produced from the same origin; and (3) classify all 10 varieties from four origins. Prior to modeling, the wavelet transform algorithm was used to smooth and denoise the spectrum. The results showed that the identification of varieties under the same origin performed the best (i.e., accuracy = 100% for some origins), followed by the classification of four different origins (i.e., accuracy = 96.97%), while the discrimination of all 10 varieties is the least desirable (i.e., accuracy = 87.88%). Our results implicated that using the full spectral range of 700-4350 cm-1 is inferior to using the subsets of the optimal spectral variables for some classifiers. Additionally, it is demonstrated that back propagation neural network (BPNN) delivered the best model performance, while random forests (RF) produced the worst outcome. Hence, this work showed that the authentication and provenance of walnut can be realized effectively based on Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy combined with machine learning algorithms.
