Abstract
AIMS We aimed to study time trends of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke incidence rates among immigrant groups living in Norway, with a special focus on immigrants from South Asia and former Yugoslavia. METHODS All incident AMI and stroke events were identified in Norwegian residents aged 35-79 years during 1996-2019 using hospital and cause of death registry data. A 3-year wash-out period was used to identify incident events. Thus, cases were counted from 1999 onwards. We calculated annual age-standardised incidence rates using direct standardisation. Poisson regression was used to calculate the average annual change in incidence rates of AMI and stroke and to study differences between immigrant groups and the Norwegian-born population. RESULTS Age-standardised incidence rates of AMI were higher in immigrants from South Asia and former Yugoslavia than in the Norwegian-born population. For Norwegian-born men and women, and former Yugoslavian women, the annual age-standardised AMI incidence rates declined over the study period by 2.4%, 2.0% and 2.3%, respectively. South Asian men and women and former Yugoslavian men did not experience such a decline, although there was an apparent decline in the last 3 years of the period for South Asian men. For former Yugoslavian men, this resulted in increasing differences compared with Norwegian-born men. For stroke, all these groups had declining trends in incidence rates, and former Yugoslavian women had the strongest decline of 4.3% annually. CONCLUSION During 1999-2019, immigrants from South Asia and former Yugoslavia did not experience the same beneficial decline in AMI incidence as the Norwegian-born population. However, both immigrant groups experienced similar or larger declines in the incidence of stroke as Norwegian-born men and women.

Abstract
In Europe, although integration of the immigrant population is acknowledged as a multidimensional challenge, the precise dimensions of integration have varied considerably throughout the past decades and between nations. Nowadays, most states have adopted 'civic integration' programmes to some extent, thereby placing weight on the acquisition of 'national moral values', implying that successful integration requires the assimilation of certain core values and implementing various strategies to instil these in immigrants. However, critics of civic integration have called into question whether the adoption of a host society's normative values facilitates immigrants' own integration. To provide evidence on this matter, we leverage data from the European Social Survey, collected between 2002 and 2020 (N = 261,830) and examine how immigrants' self-reported values relate to their integration. Our analyses ask whether value assimilation predicts improvements in immigrants' occupational status, socialization, and political participation throughout 27 countries in the European Union. We find that differences in moral values account, at most, for a fraction of the integration gap between natives and immigrants. These results therefore call into question the assimilationist principle that adopting a host society's values is conducive to immigrants' integration.

Abstract
Background A socioeconomic mortality gradient, favourable to the most advantaged social groups, has been documented in high migratory pressure (HMPCs) and highly developed countries, including Italy. However, little is known about how this association differs between natives and immigrants. This study aimed to evaluate the association between education level, occupational class and mortality among Italian and immigrant residents. Methods Using a longitudinal design, the 2011 Italian Census population was followed up to 2019. All-cause mortality was retrieved by record linkage with the Causes of Death register. The association between education/occupational class and mortality was evaluated in subjects aged 30-64, separately by sex, citizenship/macro area of origin. Mortality rate ratios (MRR) and 95 % confidence intervals were estimated using negative binomial regression models. Results Of the 23,572,516 subjects analysed, 7 % were immigrants from HMPCs; of the 410,746 deaths, 3 % were from HMPCs. Among Italians, a mortality gradient by education was observed (low/high adjMRR: 2.37 [2.16-2.60] males; 1.79 [1.64-1.96] females), whereas a weaker association with no trend was found for HMPC immigrants (adjMRR: 1.12 [1.00-1.25] males; 1.12 [1.00-1.26] females). Regarding occupational class, for immigrants from HMPCs, a higher mortality was observed in male "farmers" and "inactives" compared to "non-manual workers" (adjMRR = 1.31 [1.06-1.61] and adjMRR = 1.67 [1.50-1.85], respectively); and in females for "inactive" subjects (adjMRR = 1.48 [1.35-1.62]).A higher mortality for the less educated was observed for males from Romania, India and China, and for females from Central-Eastern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South America. A lower mortality was found for the least educated from Morocco. Conclusions The higher mortality among less educated subjects was confirmed among Italians, while it was less evident among immigrants from HMPCs. However, differences observed between citizenships, macro-areas of origin and sex highlight the need for social policies accounting for specific risk factors and cultural specificities affecting correct lifestyles and health service access.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) mortality varies based on multiple risk factors. While NPC mortality is higher in Asia, little is known about Asian subgroups in the United States (US). METHODS Using the 2005-2020 National Vital Statistics System, we examined NPC mortality by age, race (non-Hispanic black, Hispanic white (HW), non-Hispanic white (NHW), Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese), sex, and nativity (Untied States or foreign-born). RESULTS Upon disaggregation, Chinese (1.96 [CI: 1.78-2.16]), Filipino (0.68 [0.68-1.11]), and Vietnamese Americans (0.68 [0.52-1.10]) had the top age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR per 100 000 person-years). Foreign-born Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Asian Indians, and NHW had higher AAMRs compared to US-born persons. All male groups had higher AAMR compared to females. Stratifying for race, nativity, and sex, foreign-born Chinese males (4.09 [3.79-4.40]) had the highest AAMR. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate the importance of disaggregating NPC mortality data by Asian subgroups, providing valuable insights for targeted public health interventions in the United States.

Abstract
The migrant mortality advantage (MMA) has been observed in many immigrant-receiving countries, but its underlying factors remain poorly understood. This article examines the role of return migration selection effects in explaining the MMA among males aged 65+ using a rich, unique dataset from France. This dataset contains information on native-born and foreign-born pensioners who are tracked worldwide until they die, providing a rare opportunity to assess return migration selection effects and their impact on the MMA. Results provide evidence of substantial and systematic negative return migration selection among foreign-born males in France. Old-age returns, in particular, appear particularly affected by such selection; however, they are not frequent enough to explain the MMA at ages 65+. By contrast, returns at younger ages are much more frequent, and the MMA at ages 65+ essentially disappears once these earlier returns are considered. This study extends the literature on negative selection at return and its impact on the MMA by providing evidence that such negative selection may operate not only at older ages but throughout the life course, with impacts on the MMA that are larger than previously suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is evidence that non-Italians presented higher incidence of infection and worse health outcomes if compared to native populations in the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the study was to compare Italian- and non-Italian-born health outcomes, accounting for socio-economic levels. METHODS We analyzed data relative to 906,463 people in Umbria (Italy) from 21 February 2020 to 31 May 2021. We considered the National Deprivation Index, the Urban-Rural Municipalities Index and the Human Development Index (HDI) of the country of birth. We used a multilevel logistic regression model to explore the influence of these factors on SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospitalization rates. Diagnosis in the 48 h preceding admission was an indicator of late diagnosis among hospitalized cases. RESULTS Overall, 54,448 persons tested positive (6%), and 9.7% of them were hospitalized. The risk of hospital admission was higher among non-Italians and was inversely related to the HDI of the country of birth. A diagnosis within 48 h before hospitalization was more frequent among non-Italians and correlated to the HDI level. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 had unequal health outcomes among the population in Umbria. Reduced access to primary care services in the non-Italian group could explain our findings. Policies on immigrants' access to primary healthcare need to be improved.

Abstract
Immigrants from the Middle East to Sweden have a twice as high prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity as native-born Swedes. Both obesity and T2D have been linked to increased incidence of cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality (ACM); however, data on differences between ethnicities are scarce. In a population-based cohort we aimed to study the impact of Middle Eastern and European ethnicity on ACM, cancer- and CVD related mortality, incidence of cancer and CVD in an eight-year follow-up study. Methods: People born in Iraq or Sweden, who were 30-75 years of age, were invited from 2010 to 2012 to participate in the population based MEDIM study including a health exam, fasting blood sampling, assessment of insulin secretion and action (through oral glucose tolerance test) and questionnaires assessing history of CVD, cancer and T2D. Register data were retrieved from baseline until the 31st of December 2018 from the Swedish National Patient Register and Cause of Death register regarding CVD diagnosis, cancer diagnosis and cause of death. Information regarding diabetes diagnosis was retrieved from the National Diabetes Register. Individuals with a history of cancer or CVD at baseline were excluded. Cox regression analysis was assessed to study the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for the relationships between ethnicity and ACM, cancer events, CVD events, death from cancer, and death from CVD, with adjustments for age, sex, anthropometrical measures, T2D and lifestyle. A total of 1398 Iraqi- and 757 Swedish-born residents participated in the study. ACM was considerably lower in Iraqi- compared to Swedish-born individuals HR 0.32 (95% CI 0.13-0.79) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, cancer related morbidity and mortality HR 0.39 (0.22-0.69) (p < 0.01) as well as CVD related morbidity and mortality HR 0.56 (0.33-0.95) (p < 0.05) were lower in the Iraqi-born group compared to the Swedish-born group for. The differences in mortality and cancer rates across ethnicities are not fully explained by anthropometric, environmental or metabolic measures but lie elsewhere. Further studies are needed to increase the understanding of contributing mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A crucial step for planning effective public health policies for migrants with dementia is the collection of data on the local dimensions of the phenomenon and patients' characteristics. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify and characterize migrants with dementia in the Lazio region using health administrative databases. METHODS Residents with dementia aged 50 years or older, living in the Lazio region as of December 31, 2018, were identified using a validated algorithm based on hospital discharge(s), claims for antidementia drugs, and co-payment exemption for dementia. Migrants were defined as people born abroad and grouped in migrants from High Migratory Pressure Countries (HMPCs) and Highly Developed Countries (HDCs). Overall and age-specific prevalence rates were estimated in native- and foreign-born patients. RESULTS Dementia was ascertained in 38,460 residents. Among them, 37,280 (96.9%) were born in Italy, 337 (0.9%) were migrants from HDCs, and 843 (2.2%) from HMPCs. Dementia prevalence was higher among natives (1.15%, 95% CI 1.14-1.16) relative to migrants from HDCs (0.60%, 95% CI 0.54-0.67) and HMPCs (0.29%, 95% CI 0.27-0.31). The prevalence of comorbidities did not differ between groups. Migrants with dementia had a lower likelihood of receiving antidementia treatments compared with natives (51.6% in migrants from HDCs, 49.3% in migrants from HMPCs, and 53.5% among Italians). CONCLUSION Routinely collected data in healthcare administrative databases can support the identification of migrants with dementia. Migrants exhibited a lower age-standardized prevalence of registered dementia and lower access to dedicated treatments than Italians. These findings are suggestive of underdiagnosis and undertreatment of dementia in migrants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In line with the immigrant paradox, immigrants' health advantages disappear among second-generation immigrant-origin youths, including a high prevalence of suicidal behaviors. Nevertheless, the secular trend in suicidal behaviors among immigrants in South Korea has not been examined. While Korean society was once considered homogeneous, intra-Asian migration has increased in recent decades. It is needed to explore the relationship between ethnic options and mental health outcomes among immigrant-origin youths, including suicidal behaviors. METHODS Using the nationally representative Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey from 2011 to 2019 (600,541 non-immigrant-origin and 6,085 immigrant-origin), we examined the rates of suicidal behaviors to identify trends among youths with/without immigrant-origin and depending on the visibility of their immigrant-origin. Then, we conducted logistic regression to examine whether visibility is associated with higher suicidal behaviors among immigrant-origin youths. RESULTS Overall, suicidal behaviors have declined, but immigrant-origin youths showed higher levels of suicidal behaviors than non-immigrant-origin youths. Visible minority youths showed higher suicidal behaviors than their invisible counterparts, particularly in suicidal planning and suicide attempts. Among immigrant-origin youths, visible minority status was associated with higher suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts, controlling for socio-economic factors. Furthermore, female immigrant-origin youths show higher suicidal behaviors than their male counterparts. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that data disaggregation is needed when examining the mental health of immigrant-origin youths. Practitioners and policymakers should pay particular attention to immigrant-origin youths and recognize that their visibility may be associated with their risk of suicidal behaviors. Targeted intervention is also required for female visible minority youths.

Abstract
The Alaska Cancer Registry (ACR) conducted a study to identify and correct the vital status of certain cases in its database. These cases were reported as deceased by the original reporting health care facility but were not identified as being deceased using routine death resources. Cases incorrectly reported as deceased are referred to here as "zombies," as they are the "living dead" in the registry database. Zombie cases are problematic as they contribute toward artificially high mortality rates and artificially low survival rates. They are the opposite of "immortals," a term used in the literature to indicate cases that are alive in the registry database but are actually deceased. To start the study, ACR first linked its registry database to the state mortality database, the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), and the National Death Index (NDI). ACR has 3 non-North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) flag fields indicating the status of the linkage with these 3 data sources. ACR was able to identify zombie candidates by selecting deceased cases that did not successfully link with any of these 3 mortality data sources. After all 3 linkages were completed, ACR identified 20 zombie candidates out of 19,590 deceased cases. ACR researched these patients in several state-specific databases and found that 14 of them were true zombies and changed their vital status to alive. Of the remaining 6 deceased cases, 3 died out of country, 2 died in state, and 1 died out of state. ACR recommends that other state registries consider adding these 3 non-NAACCR mortality database flag fields, as they would make searching for zombie cases fairly routine. It would also serve as a way to perform a quality control check on deceased cases that accidentally become alive again after consolidation with a new facility source record.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mothers and children in families with one immigrant parent have been reported to be healthier than those in native families; however, the health of the fathers in these families has rarely been discussed in literature. OBJECTIVE We aimed to comprehensively compare the health of all the family members between families with one immigrant parent (native fathers, immigrant mothers, and their children) and native families (native fathers, native mothers, and their children). METHODS We conducted a cohort study by using the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database to recruit live-born children and their parents from 2004 to 2016. Overall, we identified 90,670 fathers, 91,270 mothers, and 132,457 children in families with one immigrant parent and 1,666,775 fathers, 1,734,104 mothers, and 2,637,191 children in native families and followed up with them from 2004 to 2017. The outcomes comprised common physical and mental disorders, catastrophic illnesses, mortality, and child adversities and accidents. The covariates comprised the child's year of birth, parental age, low-income status, and physical or mental disorder status. Logistic regression was performed to compare the risks of the outcomes between families with one immigrant parent and native families. RESULTS The parents in families with one immigrant parent were more likely to be of low-income status and were older than the parents in native families. After adjusting for the covariates, fathers in families with one immigrant parent were found to have higher risks of physical and mental disorders, catastrophic illness, and mortality than fathers in native families. Conversely, mothers in families with one immigrant parent had lower risks of physical and mental disorders, catastrophic illness, and mortality than mothers in native families. Finally, the children in families with one immigrant parent generally had better physical and mental health but higher risks for leukemia, liver diseases, autism spectrum disorder, and road traffic accidents than children in native families. CONCLUSIONS The health status of the members of families with one immigrant parent was nonhomogeneous, and the poorer general health of fathers in such families suggests health inequalities in families with one immigrant parent.

Abstract
A systematic analysis of the mortality of immigrant residents throughout Italy has never been carried out. The present study aimed to evaluate differences in mortality by immigrant status. A longitudinal study of the Italian resident population (native and immigrants) recorded in the 2011 National Institute of Statistics Census was conducted. This cohort was followed up from 2012 to 2018 until death, emigration, or end of the study period. The exposure variable was the immigrant status, measured through citizenship, dichotomized into Italian and immigrant. The main outcome was overall and cause-specific mortality. Age-standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated. The SMRs among immigrants were half that of Italians, both for men (SMR 0.52) and women (SMR 0.51), with the lowest SMRs observed for subjects from North Africa and Oceania. For some causes of death, mortality was higher among immigrants: tuberculosis in both men (SMR 4.58) and women (SMR 4.72), and cervical cancer (SMR 1.58), complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium (SMR 1.36), and homicide (SMR 2.13) for women. A multivariable quasi-Poisson regression analysis, adjusted for age and macro area of residence in Italy, confirmed a lower all-cause mortality for immigrants compared to Italians, both for men (RR 0.46) and women (RR 0.44). Although immigration to Italy is no longer a recent phenomenon, and the presence of immigrants is acquiring structural characteristics, our study confirms their health advantage, with a lower mortality than that of Italians for almost all causes of death and for all areas of origin.

Abstract
Despite the overall decreasing incidence, nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) continues to cause a significant health burden among Asian Americans (AAs), who are a fast-growing but understudied heterogeneous racial group in the United States. We aimed to examine the racial/ethnic disparities in NPC incidence, treatment, and mortality with a specific focus on AA subgroups. NPC patients aged ≥ 15 years were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 (1975-2018). AAs were divided into Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Japanese, Laotian, Korean, Cambodian, Indian/Pakistani and other Asian/Pacific Islanders (APIs). Age-adjusted incidence was calculated using the SEER*Stat software. Cox proportional and Fine-Gray sub-distribution hazard models were used to calculate overall and cause-specific mortalities after adjusting for confounders. Among the total 11,964 NPC cases, 18.4% were Chinese, 7.7% Filipino, 5.0% Vietnamese, 1.2% Hawaiian, 1.0% Japanese, 0.8% Laotian, 0.8% Korean, 0.6% Cambodian, 0.5% Indian/Pakistani and 4.4% other APIs. Laotians had the highest age-adjusted NPC incidence (9.21 per 100,000), which was 18.04 times higher than it in non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs). Chinese and Filipinos observed lower overall mortalities, however, Chinese saw increased NPC-specific mortality than NHWs. Disparities in mortality were also found across different histology subtypes. This is the first and largest study examining the NPC incidence and outcomes in AA subgroups. The significant disparities of NPC within AAs underline the importance of adequate AA-subgroup sample size in future studies to understand the prognostic role of ethnicity in NPC and advocate more ethnically and culturally tailored cancer prevention and care delivery.

Abstract
Improvements in life expectancy at birth in the UK had stalled prior to 2020 and have fallen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stagnation took place at a time of relatively high net migration, yet we know that migrants to Australia, the USA and some Nordic countries have positively impacted national life expectancy trends, outperforming native-born populations in terms of life expectancy. It is important to ascertain whether migrants have contributed positively to life expectancy in the UK, concealing worsening trends in the UK-born population, or whether relying on national life expectancy calculations alone may have masked excess mortality in migrant populations. We need a better understanding of the role and contribution of migrant populations to national life expectancy trends in the UK.

Abstract
Background In Europe, one of the most consistent findings is that of migrant mortality advantage in high-income countries. Furthermore, the literature shows that economic shocks, which bring worse health outcomes, can severely affect the most disadvantaged individuals. We analyse differences and changes in all-cause mortality between Italians and migrants residing in Rome before, during, and in the aftermath of the Great Recession (2001–2015) by birth-cohort. Methods The analysis is a longitudinal open cohort study. Mortality data come from the Register of the Causes of Death (58,637 deaths) and the population denominator (n = 2,454,410) comes from the Municipal Register of Rome. By comparing three time-periods (2001–2005, 2006–2010, and 2011–2015), we analyse all-cause mortality of Rome residents born, respectively, in the intervals 1937–1976, 1942–1981, 1947–1986 (aged 25–64 years at entry into observation). Computing birth-cohort-specific death rates and applying parametric survival models with age as the time-scale, we compare mortality differences between migrants and Italians by gender, area of origin, and time-period. Results Overall, we find a lower risk of dying for migrants than Italians regardless of gender (Women: HR = 0.61, 95% CI 0.56–0.66; Men: HR = 0.49, 95% CI 0.45–0.53), and a lower death risk over time for the total population. Nevertheless, such a pattern changes according to gender and migrants’ area of origin. Conclusion Given the relevance of international migrations in Europe, studying migrants’ health has proved increasingly important. The deterioration in migrant health and the gradual weakening of migrants’ mortality advantage is likely to become a public health issue with important consequences for the healthcare system of all European countries.
