Electrochemical and biological characterization of Ti-Nb-Zr-Si alloy for orthopedic applications

Improving Corrosion and Wear Resistance of 316L Stainless Steel via In Situ Pure Ti and Ti6Al4V Coatings: Tribocorrosion and Electrochemical Analysis

This study aims to achieve in situ-formed pure Ti and Ti6Al4V coatings on 316L stainless steel through hot pressing and examine their wear and corrosion properties thoroughly in two simulated body fluids: physiological serum (0.9% NaCl) and Hanks' solution. The sintering and diffusion bonding process was conducted at 1050 °C under a uniaxial pressure of 40 MPa for 30 min in a vacuum environment of 10-4 mbar. Following sintering, in situ-formed pure Ti and Ti6Al4V coatings, approximately 1000 µm thick, were produced on 316L substrates approximately 3000 µm in thickness. The mean hardness of 316L substrates, pure Ti, and Ti6Al4V coatings are around 165 HV, 170 HV, and 420 HV, respectively. The interface of the stainless steel substrate and the pure Ti and Ti6Al4V coatings exhibited no microstructural defects, while the interface exhibited significantly higher hardness values (ranging from 600 to 700 HV). The coatings improved corrosion resistance in both electrolytes compared to the 316L substrate. Wet wear tests revealed reduced friction coefficients in 0.9% NaCl relative to Hanks' solution, highlighting the chemical interactions between the material surface and the electrolyte type and the significance of tribocorrosion in biocoatings.

Bio-functional niobium-based metallic biomaterials: Exploring their physicomechanical properties, biological significance, and implant applications

The significance of biomedical applications of bio-functional niobium (Nb)-based metallic biomaterials is underscored by their potential utilization in implant application. Nb-based metallic materials present reliable physicomechanical and biological properties, thus represent materials highly suitable for implant application. This review provides an overview on the advances of pure niobium and Nb-based metallic materials as implant materials over the past 20 years, and highlights the advantages of Nb-based metallic biomaterials for implant application in terms of their physicomechanical properties, corrosion resistance in biological media, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility, cell compatibility, blood compatibility, osteogenesis, and bioactivity. An introduction is provided for the production and processing techniques for Nb-based metallic biomaterials, including traditional melting processes like vacuum arc remelting, additive manufacturing like selective laser melting (SLM), electron beam melting (EBM), spark plasma sintering (SPS), and severe plastic deformation like equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), multi-axial forging (MAF), high pressure torsion (HPT), as well as their physicomechanical properties and implant application. Also suggested are the critical issues, challenges, and prospects in the further development of Nb-based metallic biomaterials for implant applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Nb-based biomaterials have gained significant interest for bioimplantable scaffolds because of their appropriate mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility. No prior work has been published specifically reviewing bio-functional Nb-based biomaterials for exploring their physicomechanical properties, biological significance, and implant applications. This review provides an overview on the advances of niobium and Nb-based materials as implant materials over the past 20 years, and highlights the advantages of Nb-based biomaterials for implant application. An introduction is provided for the production and processing techniques for Nb-based biomaterials, as well as their physicomechanical properties and implant application. Also suggested are the critical issues, challenges, and prospects in the further development of Nb-based biomaterials for implant applications.

Exploring the Broad Spectrum of Titanium-Niobium Implants and Hydroxyapatite Coatings-A Review

Tooth loss replacement using dental implants is becoming more frequent. Traditional dental implant materials such as commercially pure titanium and titanium aluminum vanadium alloys have well-proven mechanical and biological properties. New titanium alloying metals such as niobium provide improved mechanical properties such as lower elastic modulus while displaying comparable or even better biocompatibility. Hydroxyapatite coatings are a well-documented and widely used method for enhancing dental implants' surface characteristics and properties and could provide a useful tool for further enhancing titanium-niobium implant properties like osteointegration. Among several coating techniques, physical deposition methods and, in particular, vapour deposition ones are the most used due to their advantages compared to wet deposition techniques for hydroxyapatite coating of metallic surfaces like that of dental implants. Considering the scarcity of data concerning the in vivo evaluation of titanium-niobium biocompatibility and osteointegration and the lack of studies investigating coating these new proposed alloys with hydroxyapatite, this review aims to further knowledge on hydroxyapatite-coated titanium niobium alloys.

Effect of Surface Roughness on the Electrochemical Behavior and Corrosion Resistance of TiTaNbZrAg Alloy with Different Amounts of Tantalum in Bulk Composition

The corrosion behavior of the TiTaNbZrAg alloys with different amounts of tantalum (0%, 10% and 20%) and with distinct surface topography (smooth and rough) was investigated in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) for long-time immersion (1000 h). By this approach, we expect to bring about new insights into the influence of both the amount of Ta in the alloy composition and the surface topography on the corrosion behavior of the Ti-based alloys. The corrosion resistance was studied by Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Potentiodynamic Polarization (PP), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). From the potentiodynamic investigations, it was observed that all types of samples showed good corrosion resistance (i.e., Rcorr < 10 µm y-1) and may be used successfully for medical applications. However, the samples with smooth surfaces and with a certain amount of Ta (10% and 20%) exhibit the best corrosion performance (Rcorr < 1 µm y-1). As regards the samples with rough surfaces, the results evidenced that they showed lower corrosion resistance (1 < Rcorr < 3 µm y-1), suggesting that the Ta presence does not necessarily hinder the corrosion processes. Actually, the synergetic effect of both the presence of Ta and surface roughness plays an important role in corrosion resistance.

The Effect of Anodization and Thermal Treatment on Mixed-Oxide Layer Formation on Ti–Zr Alloy

The anodization or thermal treatments applied to alloys of titanium and zirconium have a substantiated effect on the mixed-oxide layer formation compared to the naturally occurring one. A Ti–Zr 50%/50% alloy was chosen for a comparative study. Controlled, thermally treated, and anodized samples obtained with controlled procedures were analyzed in terms of morphological and compositional analysis (using SEM and EDX analysis) as well as for the determination of hardness variations. Substantial differences were observed depending on the applied functionalization method (compact of structured mixed-oxide nanotubes when the samples are subjected to the anodization procedure); there was an increase of more than six folds in the mixed-oxide layer hardness and D Shore scale, when subjected to thermal treatment, and hence, this lead to the conclusion that one may control the morphology, composition and/or the hardness of the mixed-oxide layer by applying one or another or a combination of functionalization methods.

A Review of the Development of Titanium-Based and Magnesium-Based Metallic Glasses in the Field of Biomedical Materials

This article reviews the research and development focus of metallic glasses in the field of biomedical applications. Metallic glasses exhibit a short-range ordered and long-range disordered glassy structure at the microscopic level, devoid of structural defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries. Therefore, they possess advantages such as high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, combining characteristics of both metals and glasses. This novel alloy system has found applications in the field of biomedical materials due to its excellent comprehensive performance. This review discusses the applications of Ti-based bulk metallic glasses in load-bearing implants such as bone plates and screws for long-term implantation. On the other hand, Mg-based metallic glasses, owing to their degradability, are primarily used in degradable bone nails, plates, and vascular stents. However, metallic glasses as biomaterials still face certain challenges. The Young's modulus value of Ti-based metallic glasses is higher than that of human bones, leading to stress-shielding effects. Meanwhile, Mg-based metallic glasses degrade too quickly, resulting in the premature loss of mechanical properties and the formation of numerous bubbles, which hinder tissue healing. To address these issues, we propose the following development directions: (1) Introducing porous structures into titanium-based metallic glasses is an important research direction for reducing Young's modulus; (2) To enhance the bioactivity of implant material surfaces, the surface modification of titanium-based metallic glasses is essential. (3) Developing antibacterial coatings and incorporating antibacterial metal elements into the alloys is essential to maintain the long-term effective antibacterial properties of metallic biomaterials. (4) Corrosion resistance must be further improved through the preparation of composite materials, while ensuring biocompatibility and safety, to achieve controllable degradation rates and degradation modes.

Development of Novel Antibacterial Ti-Nb-Ga Alloys with Low Stiffness for Medical Implant Applications

With the rising demand for medical implants and the dominance of implant-associated failures including infections, extensive research has been prompted into the development of novel biomaterials that can offer desirable characteristics. This study develops and evaluates new titanium-based alloys containing gallium additions with the aim of offering beneficial antibacterial properties while having a reduced stiffness level to minimise the effect of stress shielding when in contact with bone. The focus is on the microstructure, mechanical properties, antimicrobial activity, and cytocompatibility to inform the suitability of the designed alloys as biometals. Novel Ti-33Nb-xGa alloys (x = 3, 5 wt%) were produced via casting followed by homogenisation treatment, where all results were compared to the currently employed alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) results depicted a single beta (β) phase microstructure in both Ga-containing alloys, where Ti-33Nb-5Ga was also dominated by dendritic alpha (α) phase grains in a β-phase matrix. EDS analysis indicated that the α-phase dendrites in Ti-33Nb-5Ga were enriched with titanium, while the β-phase was richer in niobium and gallium elements. Mechanical properties were measured using nanoindentation and microhardness methods, where the Young's modulus for Ti-33Nb-3Ga and Ti-33Nb-5Ga was found to be 75.4 ± 2.4 and 67.2 ± 1.6 GPa, respectively, a significant reduction of 37% and 44% with respect to Ti-6Al-4V. This reduction helps address the disproportionate Young's modulus between titanium implant components and cortical bone. Importantly, both alloys successfully achieved superior antimicrobial properties against Gram-negative P. aeruginosa and Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria. Antibacterial efficacy was noted at up to 90 ± 5% for the 3 wt% alloy and 95 ± 3% for the 5 wt% alloy. These findings signify a substantial enhancement of the antimicrobial performance when compared to Ti-6Al-4V which exhibited very small rates (up to 6.3 ± 1.5%). No cytotoxicity was observed in hGF cell lines over 24 h. Cell morphology and cytoskeleton distribution appeared to depict typical morphology with a prominent nucleus, elongated fibroblastic spindle-shaped morphology, and F-actin filamentous stress fibres in a well-defined structure of parallel bundles along the cellular axis. The developed alloys in this work have shown very promising results and are suggested to be further examined towards the use of orthopaedic implant components.

Investigation of Bruxism wear behavior of titanium alloy biomaterials; experimental and 3D finite element simulation

Bruxism can be defined as the process of direct contact with teeth and dental materials with an involuntary jaw-tightening movement. In this process, teeth and dental materials can be exposed to various damage mechanisms. This study aims to realize the mechanism of bruxism with finite element analysis and in vitro rotating chewing movement analysis. Within the scope of the study, cp-Ti, Ti-5Zr, and Ti-5Ta materials were subjected to wear tests in the finite element analysis and in vitro rotating chewing movement method under the determined Bruxism chewing test conditions. Test specimens with cylindrical geometry were exposed to a direct every-contact wear mechanism for 30 s under 150 N bruxism chewing bite force. The bruxism chewing cycle continued for 300 min at a frequency of 2 Hz. Microanalysis of the wear surfaces of the samples after the experimental study was carried out with Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results obtained within the scope of this study showed that the Bruxism wear resistance increased by adding zirconium and tantalum to pure titanium material. This result shows that pure titanium material, which is known to have poor wear resistance, can be improved with Zr and Ta alloys. It is clinically important that the success rate in the treatment process increases with the increase in wear resistance. However, the micro-cracks observed in the microstructure may have occurred in the sub-surface, which is a show of the fatigue wear mechanism.

Titanium Implants Coated with Hydroxyapatite Used in Orbital Wall Reconstruction-A Literature Review

With the increasing incidences of orbital wall injuries, effective reconstruction materials and techniques are imperative for optimal clinical outcomes. In this literature review, we delve into the efficacy and potential advantages of using titanium implants coated with nanostructured hydroxyapatite for the reconstruction of the orbital wall. Titanium implants, recognized for their durability and mechanical strength, when combined with the osteoconductive properties of hydroxyapatite, present a potentially synergistic solution. The purpose of this review was to critically analyze the recent literature and present the state of the art in orbital wall reconstruction using titanium implants coated with nanostructured hydroxyapatite. This review offers clinicians detailed insight into the benefits and potential drawbacks of using titanium implants coated with nanostructured hydroxyapatite for orbital wall reconstruction. The highlighted results advocate for its benefits in terms of osseointegration and provide a novel strategy for orbital reconstruction, though further studies are essential to establish long-term efficacy and address concerns.

Improving antibacterial ability of Ti-Cu thin films with co-sputtering method

Due to the resistance of some bacteria to antibiotics, research in the field of dealing with bacterial infections is necessary. A practical approach utilized in this study involves the preparation of an antibacterial thin film on the surfaces, which can effectively inhibit and reduce biofilm formation and bacterial adherence. In this study, we report the fabrication of bactericidal titanium (Ti) and copper (Cu) surfaces which involves a powerful co-sputtering method. This method provides a situation in which constituent elements are deposited simultaneously to control the composition of the thin film. Prepared samples were examined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. To evaluate antibacterial behavior, we used two bacterial strains Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Antibacterial activity of the prepared sample was assessed by determining the number of colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) using a standard viable cell count assay. Results indicated that as the Cu concentration increased, the nanoscale surfaces became rougher, with roughness values rising from 11.85 to 49.65 nm, and the contact angle increased from 40 to 80 degrees, indicating a hydrophilic character. These factors play a significant role in the antibacterial properties of the surface. The Ti-Cu films displayed superior antibacterial ability, with a 99.9% reduction (equivalent to a 5-log reduction) in bacterial viability after 2 h compared to Ti alone against both bacterial strains. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images verified that both E. coli and S. aureus cells were physically deformed and damaged the bacterial cell ultrastructure was observed. These findings highlight that adding Cu to Ti can improve the antibacterial ability of the surface while inhibiting bacterial adherence. Therefore, the Ti14-Cu86 sample with the highest percentage of Cu had the best bactericidal rate. Investigation of toxicity of Cu-Ti thin films was conducted the using the MTT assay, which revealed their biocompatibility and absence of cytotoxicity, further confirming their potential as promising biomaterials for various applications.

Octacalcium Phosphate-Laden Hydrogels on 3D-Printed Titanium Biomaterials Improve Corrosion Resistance in Simulated Biological Media

The inflammatory-associated corrosion of metallic dental and orthopedic implants causes significant complications, which may result in the implant's failure. The corrosion resistance can be improved with coatings and surface treatments, but at the same time, it might affect the ability of metallic implants to undergo proper osteointegration. In this work, alginate hydrogels with and without octacalcium phosphate (OCP) were made on 3D-printed (patterned) titanium alloys (Ti Group 2 and Ti-Al-V Group 23) to enhance their anticorrosion properties in simulated normal, inflammatory, and severe inflammatory conditions in vitro. Alginate (Alg) and OCP-laden alginate (Alg/OCP) hydrogels were manufactured on the surface of 3D-printed Ti substrates and were characterized with wettability analysis, XRD, and FTIR. The electrochemical characterization of the samples was carried out with open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was observed that the hydrophilicity of Alg/OCP coatings was higher than that of pure Alg and that OCP phase crystallinity was increased when samples were subjected to simulated biological media. The corrosion resistance of uncoated and coated samples was lower in inflammatory and severe inflammatory environments vs. normal media, but the hydrogel coatings on 3D-printed Ti layers moved the corrosion potential towards more nobler values, reducing the corrosion current density in all simulated solutions. These measurements revealed that OCP particles in the Alg hydrogel matrix noticeably increased the electrical charge transfer resistance at the substrate and coating interface more than with Alg hydrogel alone.

Mitochondrial Redox Balance of Fibroblasts Exposed to Ti-6Al-4V Microplates Subjected to Different Types of Anodizing

Despite the high biocompatibility of titanium and its alloys, the need to remove titanium implants is increasingly being debated due to the potential for adverse effects associated with long-term retention. Therefore, new solutions are being sought to enhance the biocompatibility of titanium implants. One of them is to increase the thickness of the passive layer of the implant made of titanium dioxide. We were the first to evaluate the effect of hard-anodized (type II) Ti-6Al-4V alloy discs on the cytotoxicity, mitochondrial function, and redox balance of fibroblasts mitochondria compared to standard-anodized (type III) and non-anodized discs. The study used fibroblasts obtained from human gingival tissue. The test discs were applied to the bottom of 12-well plates. Cells were cultured for 24 h and 7, 14, and 21 days and mitochondria were isolated. We demonstrated the occurrence of oxidative stress in the mitochondria of fibroblasts of all tested groups, regardless of the presence and type of anodization. Type II anodization prevented changes in complex II activity (vs. control). The lowest degree of citrate synthase inhibition occurred in mitochondria exposed to titanium discs with type II anodization. In the last phase of culture, the presence of type II anodization reduced the degree of cytochrome c oxidase inhibition compared to the other tests groups and the control group, and prevented apoptosis. Throughout the experiment, the release of titanium, aluminium, and vanadium ions from titanium discs with a hard-anodized passive layer was higher than from the other titanium discs, but decreased with time. The obtained results proved the existence of dysfunction and redox imbalance in the mitochondria of fibroblasts exposed to hard-anodized titanium discs, suggesting the need to search for new materials perhaps biodegradable in tissues of the human body.

Impact of thermal oxidation parameters on micro-hardness and hot corrosion of Ti-6Al-3Mo-2Nb-2Sn-2Zr-1.5Cr alloy

Protective oxide layers on Ti-6Al-3Mo-2Nb-2Sn-2Zr-1.5Cr (TC21) alloy with equiaxed microstructure considerably influence micro-hardness and hot corrosion resistance. The present work's thermal oxidation of TC21 alloy was performed at 600, 700, and 800 °C for 5, 20, and 50 h durations. Hot corrosion methods in NaCl and NaCl + Na₂SO₄ salt media were applied to raw (unoxidized) and oxidized samples at 600 and 800 °C for 50 h. Hot corrosion was conducted at 600 °C for 5 cycles with 10-h steps. The best oxide layer thickness was observed at 800 °C, which increased with increased oxidation time and temperature. The surface hardness of the oxide layer at 800 °C was 900 ± 60 HV_0.05 owing to the formation of TiO₂ and Al₂O₃ phases. Raw material hardness was 342 ± 20 HV_0.05, increasing threefold due to thermal oxidation. In the case of NaCl, weight loss dominated all samples except at 800 °C for 5 h. In the case of NaCl + Na₂SO₄, weight gain occurred at 600 and 800 °C for 5 h. Weight loss occurred for the raw samples and those processed at 800 °C for 20 and 50 h, where the oxide layer flaked off. Surface hardness increased upon hot corrosion testing because of the formation of brittle phases, such as TiO₂ and Na₄Ti₅O₁₂. Samples that oxidized at 800 °C for 5 h had the highest hardness and corrosion resistance.

Preclinical EIS Study of the Inflammatory Response Evolution of Pure Titanium Implant in Hank's Biological Solution

Pure titanium (Ti) is investigated in a pre-clinical study in Hank's biological solution using electrochemical methods, open circuit potential, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to highlight the time effect in extreme body conditions, such as inflammatory diseases, on degradability due to corrosion processes occurring on the titanium implant. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data are presented as Nyquist and Bode plots. The results show the increasing reactivity of titanium implants in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, which is an oxygen-reactive compound that describes inflammatory conditions. The polarization resistance, which results from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, declined dramatically from the highest value registered in Hank's solution to smaller values registered in all solutions when different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were tested. The EIS analysis provided insights into titanium's in vitro corrosion behavior as an implanted biomaterial, which could not be solely obtained through potentiodynamic polarization testing.

An Optimized Method for Microcomputed Tomography Analysis of Trabecular Parameters of Metal Scaffolds for Bone Ingrowth

Owing to its superior mechanical and biological properties, titanium metal is widely used in dental implants, orthopedic devices, and bone regenerative materials. Advances in 3D printing technology have led to more and more metal-based scaffolds being used in orthopedic applications. Microcomputed tomography (μCT) is commonly applied to evaluate the newly formed bone tissues and scaffold integration in animal studies. However, the presence of metal artifacts dramatically hinders the accuracy of μCT analysis of new bone formation. To acquire reliable and accurate μCT results that reflect new bone formation in vivo, it is crucial to lessen the impact of metal artifacts. Herein, an optimized procedure for calibrating μCT parameters using histological data was developed. In this study, the porous titanium scaffolds were fabricated by powder bed fusion based on computer-aided design. These scaffolds were implanted in femur defects created in New Zealand rabbits. After 8 weeks, tissue samples were collected to assess new bone formation using μCT analysis. Resin-embedded tissue sections were then used for further histological analysis. A series of deartifact two-dimensional (2D) μCT images were obtained by setting the erosion radius and the dilation radius in the μCT analysis software (CTan) separately. To get the μCT results closer to the real value, the 2D μCT images and corresponding parameters were subsequently selected by matching the histological images in the particular region. After applying the optimized parameters, more accurate 3D images and more realistic statistical data were obtained. The results demonstrate that the newly established method of adjusting μCT parameters can effectively reduce the influence of metal artifacts on data analysis to some extent. For further validation, other metal materials should be analyzed using the process established in this study.

Fabricated High-Strength, Low-Elastic Modulus Biomedical Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn Alloy via Powder Metallurgy

With the huge demands of an aging society, it is urgent to develop a new generation of non-toxic titanium alloy to match the modulus of human bone. Here, we prepared bulk Ti2448 alloys by powder metallurgy technology, and focused on the influence of the sintering process on the porosity, phase composition, and mechanical properties of the initial sintered samples. Furthermore, we performed solution treatment on the samples under different sintering parameters to further adjust the microstructure and phase composition, so as to achieve strength enhancement and reduction of Young's modulus. Solution treatment can effectively inhibit the continuous α phase precipitated along the grain boundaries of the β matrix, which is beneficial to the fracture resistance. Therefore, the water-quenched sample exhibits good mechanical properties due to the absence of acicular α-phase. Samples sintered at 1400 °C and subsequently water quenched have excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, which benefit from high porosity and the smaller feature size of microstructure. To be specific, the compressive yield stress is 1100 MPa, the strain at fracture is 17.5%, and the Young's modulus is 44 GPa, which are more applicable to orthopedic implants. Finally, the relatively mature sintering and solution treatment process parameters were screened out for reference in actual production.

Progress in Surface Modification of Titanium Implants by Hydrogel Coatings

Although titanium and titanium alloys have become the preferred materials for various medical implants, surface modification technology still needs to be strengthened in order to adapt to the complex physiological environment of the human body. Compared with physical or chemical modification methods, biochemical modification, such as the introduction of functional hydrogel coating on implants, can fix biomolecules such as proteins, peptides, growth factors, polysaccharides, or nucleotides on the surface of the implants, so that they can directly participate in biological processes; regulate cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation; and improve the biological activity on the surface of the implants. This review begins with a look at common substrate materials for hydrogel coatings on implant surfaces, including natural polymers such as collagen, gelatin, chitosan, and alginate, and synthetic materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene glycol, and polyacrylic acid. Then, the common construction methods of hydrogel coating (electrochemical method, sol-gel method and layer-by-layer self-assembly method) are introduced. Finally, five aspects of the enhancement effect of hydrogel coating on the surface bioactivity of titanium and titanium alloy implants are described: osseointegration, angiogenesis, macrophage polarization, antibacterial effects, and drug delivery. In this paper, we also summarize the latest research progress and point out the future research direction. After searching, no previous relevant literature reporting this information was found.

Advances of plant and biomass extracted zirconium nanoparticles in dental implant application

Nanoparticles are minimal materials with unique physicochemical features that set them apart from bulk materials of the same composition. These properties make nanoparticles highly desirable for use in commercial and medical research. The primary intention for the development of nanotechnology is to achieve overarching social objectives like bettering our understanding of nature, boosting productivity, improving healthcare, and extending the bounds of sustainable development and human potential. Keeping this as a motivation, Zirconia nanoparticles are becoming the preferred nanostructure for modern biomedical applications. This nanotechnology is exceptionally versatile and has several potential uses in dental research. This review paper concentrated on the various benefits of zirconium nanoparticles in dentistry and how they provide superior strength and flexibility compared to their counterparts. Moreover, the popularity of zirconium nanoparticles is also growing as it has strong biocompatibility potency. Zirconium nanoparticles can be used to develop or address the major difficulty in dentistry. Therefore, this review paper aims to provide a summary of the fundamental research and applications of zirconium nanoparticles in dental implants.
