Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether risk estimates for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia change when restricting model comparison groups to "nonpesticide exposure" (NPE10) households. METHODS Cases ( n = 1810) 15 years or younger were identified through Children's Cancer Group institutions between 1989 and 1993 and age-/sex-matched to controls ( n = 1951). Household pesticide use during pregnancy/month prior was collected via telephone. NPE10 comparison group reporting no parental exposure to 10 pesticide classes was identified. RESULTS Adjusted odds ratios increased from 15% to 49% when limiting the comparison to NPE10. Maternal termite insecticide exposure was associated with greatest risk (adjusted odds ratio, 4.21; 95% confidence interval, 2.00-8.88). There was minimal evidence of interaction by child sex or occupational pesticide exposure, and no monotonic dose-response pattern with frequency of use (times per year). CONCLUSIONS Elevated risks are consistent with published pooled-/meta-analyses and DNA damage. The consistency and magnitude of these associations warrant product labeling, exposure reduction interventions, or both.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are commonly applied for pest control in China and around the world. Previous studies reported that NEOs are hepatotoxic to mammals. However, limited studies have explored the associations between NEOs exposure and liver disease. In the present study, we detected six parent NEOs (p-NEOs), including acetamiprid, thiacloprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam, and five characteristic metabolites (m-NEOs), including 5-hydroxy-imidacloprid, olefin-imidacloprid, N-desmethyl-acetamiprid, 1-methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furylmethyl) guanidine and 1-methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furyl methyl) urea, in blood samples collected from healthy donors (n = 100; females vs. males: 45 vs. 55; age: 22-91 years) and liver cancer patients (n = 274; females vs. males: 118 vs. 156; age: 11-88 years) in one hospital from Guangzhou city, South China. NEOs were frequently detected (61%-94%) in blood samples, with median concentrations ranging from 0.19 ng/mL to 1.28 ng/mL and 0.20 ng/mL to 2.03 ng/mL for healthy and liver cancer populations, respectively. olefin-imidacloprid was the most abundant NEOs in healthy and liver cancer populations, accounting for 23.4% and 20.7%, respectively. Significant positive correlations among most m-NEOs concentrations were found, and associations between m-NEOs and their corresponding p-NEOs were positively correlated. These findings indicated that the sources of m-NEOs were both endogenous and exogeneous. Females had higher median concentrations of NEOs and their metabolites than males. Moreover, the α-fetoprotein values and blood concentrations of target analytes (r = 0.428-0.601, p < 0.05) were positively correlated. Meanwhile, associations between the concentrations of p-NEOs and m-NEOs and liver cancer were found (odds ratio = 2.33-9.02, 95% confidence interval = 0.31-22.7, p < 0.05), indicating that human exposure to NEOs and their metabolites might increase the odds of liver cancer prevalence. Our work provided a new insight into the hepatotoxicity of NEOs and their metabolites, and human health risks of exposure to these pollutants warranted further studies.

Abstract
Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are extensively applied in global agricultural production for pest control but have adverse effects on human health. In this study, the concentrations of six NEOs and three characteristic metabolites were investigated by collecting 200 serum samples from an elderly population in China. Results showed that the NEOs and their metabolites were widely detected (89%-98 %) in the serum samples from the osteoporosis (OP) (n = 120) and non-OP (n = 80) population, and their median concentrations ranged from 0.04 ng/mL to 5.99 ng/mL and 0.01 ng/mL to 2.02 ng/mL, respectively. N-desmethyl-acetamiprid (ACE-dm) was the most abundant NEOs in the serum samples. Gender-related differences were found in concentrations of most NEOs and their metabolites in serum, with males having higher target analytes than females. Significantly (p < 0.05) positive correlations were observed among most NEO concentrations, suggesting that exposure source of these substances is common or related. However, associations between the concentrations of characteristic metabolites and their corresponding NEOs were insignificant, probably because the exogenous intake are the primary sources of metabolites of NEOs instead of the internal biotransformation. The associations between NEO concentrations (i.e., ACE-dm, dinotefuran, and olefin-imidacloprid) and OP (OR = 2.33-6.92, 95 % CI = 0.37-16.9, p-trend < 0.05) indicate that NEO exposure is correlated with increased odds of prevalent OP. This study is the first to document the profiles of NEOs and their metabolites in serum samples collected from an elderly population in South China and examine the relationships between NEO exposure and OP.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are widely used for pest control worldwide. The profile of NEOs in paired urine and indoor dust has not yet been reported in China. In this study, 40 paired samples (i.e., 160 urine and 40 indoor dust) were collected from university students and dormitories from Guangzhou City of China to measure the concentrations of six NEOs and their three metabolites. Target analytes were frequently detected in paired urine (81%-98%) and indoor dust (75%-95%) samples, with median concentrations ranging from 0.02 [specific gravity (SG) adjusted: 0.02] to 2.08 (SG-adjusted: 2.38) ng/mL in urine and from 0.05 to 2.74 ng/g in indoor dust. 5-Hydroxy-imidacloprid was predominant in urine, while N-desmethyl acetamiprid was predominant in indoor dust samples, accounting for 56% and 37%, respectively. 1-Methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furylmethyl) urea, a dinotefuran degradate, was measured for the first time in indoor dust, with the median level of 1.02 ng/g. Significant gender-related differences (p < 0.05) in the urinary concentrations of most NEOs were found. We calculated the estimated daily intake (EDI) of target compounds from urine and indoor measurements. The EDIs of target analytes varied among all urine and indoor dust samples, with median values ranging from 0.51 (SG-adjusted: 0.56) to 51.6 (SG-adjusted: 52.8) ng/kg bw/day and from 0.04 to 2.10 pg/kg bw/day, respectively. Moreover, the median EDIsurine of most target analytes in females were significantly higher than (p < 0.05) those in males. The median EDIsdust of target compounds in dust from female dormitories were slightly higher than that in dust from male dormitories. These findings indicated that females were more exposed to NEO than males. Thus, the potential health risks of exposure to NEOs and their metabolites in female adults should be addressed in future studies. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report the profiles of NEOs and their metabolites in paired urine and indoor dust samples from young adults in China.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are widely used for pest control worldwide. However, only a few studies have analyzed NEOs and their metabolites in blood samples, and no study has measured the concentrations of NEOs and their metabolites in paired urine and blood samples. In this study, six NEOs and three characteristic metabolites were detected in 196 paired urine and blood samples collected from young adults from China. The NEOs and their metabolites were widely detected in paired urine (67%-91%) and blood (64%-97%) samples, and the median levels ranged within 0.01-1.15 ng/mL in urine and 0.08-0.80 ng/mL in blood. Olefin-imidacloprid (Of-IMI) and 1-methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furylmethyl) urea (UF) were the most abundant target compounds in the urine (32.4%) and blood (26.4%) samples, respectively. Gender-related differences were observed in the concentrations of most NEOs and their metabolites in the urine and blood samples. The partitioning of target analytes between blood and urine (NEOs-B/NEOs-U ratios) was also calculated in this study. The B/U ratios of most NEOs and their metabolites were below 1, and positive correlations were observed between urine and blood in most levels of NEOs and their metabolites. This finding indicates that urinary levels are good predictors of human exposure to NEOs and their metabolites. The estimated daily intake (EDI) and the imidacloprid-equivalent (IMIeq) levels of NEOs and their metabolites in 196 young adults were also determined. The median EDI values (ng/kg bw/day) of ΣNEOs (sum of NEOs and their metabolites) and IMIeq in females (194.9 and 458.2) were slightly higher than (p > 0.05) those in males (157.1 and 439.7). This finding shows young adults are extensively exposed to NEOs and their metabolites. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report about NEOs and their metabolites in paired samples of urine and blood in China.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are widely used around the world. The distribution of NEOs in paired saliva and periodontal blood samples was not previously documented in China. In this study, the concentrations of six NEOs and three corresponding metabolites were measured in 188 paired saliva and periodontal blood samples collected from South China. NEOs and their metabolites were frequently detected (68-94%) in paired saliva and periodontal blood, with median levels of 0.01-0.99 ng/mL. 1-Methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furylmethyl) urea was the most predominant NEO in paired saliva (39%) and periodontal blood (42%). Gender-related differences in NEOs and their metabolite concentrations were found: males showed lower levels than females. We calculated the concentration ratios between saliva and periodontal blood (S/PB ratios), and found that the median S/PB ratios of NEO and their metabolites were higher than 1, indicating that NEOs and their metabolites were easily excreted via saliva. 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was measured in paired saliva and periodontal blood as a marker of oxidative stress. 8-OHdG concentrations in saliva and periodontal blood were significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.05) with the concentrations of most NEOs and their metabolites in saliva and periodontal blood samples. These findings indicated that exposure to NEOs and their metabolites is associated with oxidative stress. This study is the first to report NEOs and their metabolites in paired saliva and periodontal blood samples collected from South China.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are widely used in agricultural production processes in China and worldwide. NEOs have been an increasing concern because of their potential toxicity to nontarget organisms. However, studies that focused on human exposure to NEOs in China are limited. In this study, levels of six parent NEOs (p-NEOs), namely imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), clothianidin (CLO), dinotefuran (DIN), thiamethoxam (THIX), and thiacloprid (THI), and three metabolites (m-NEOs), such as 5-hydroxy-imidacloprid (5-OH-IMI), 1-methyl-3-(tetrahydro-3-furyl methyl) urea (UF), and N-desmethyl-acetamiprid (N-dm-ACE) were measured in 127 tooth samples collected from South China. P-NEOs and m-NEOs are frequently detected (76%-93%) in tooth samples, with median levels of 0.03-1.20 ng/g. UF is the most abundant NEOs in tooth samples (36%). Females have higher NEO levels than males, and gender-related differences in NEO levels are found. Associations among most p-NEOs are also found (p < 0.05), indicating the source of human exposure to p-NEOs is related. However, no significant relationships (p > 0.05) between levels of m-NEOs and their corresponding p-NEOs are found, suggesting that exogenous m-NEOs contribute to exposure. We have also examined the associations between human NEOs exposure and periodontitis, and associations between NEO exposure and periodontitis are observed (OR = 2.63-7.33; 95% CI = 1.01-21.1, p-trend < 0.05). Our results suggest that NEO levels are associated with increased odds of prevalent periodontitis. This study is the first to report about p-NEOs and m-NEOs in tooth samples collected from South China.

Abstract
Background: Children are exposed to chemical and non-chemical stressors from their built, natural, and social environments. Research is needed to advance our scientific understanding of non-chemical stressors, evaluate how they alter the biological response to a chemical stressor, and determine how they impact children’s health and well-being. To do this, we conducted a state-of-the-science review of non-chemical stressors found in a child’s social environment. Methods: Studies eligible for inclusion in this review were identified through a search of the peer-reviewed literature using PubMed and PsycINFO. Combinations of words associated with non-chemical stressors and children were used to form search strings. Filters were used to limit the search to studies published in peer-reviewed journals from 2000–2016 and written in English. Publications found using the search strings and filters went through two rounds of screening. Results: A total of 146 studies met the inclusion criteria. From these studies, 245 non-chemical stressors were evaluated. The non-chemical stressors were then organized into 13 general topic areas: acculturation, adverse childhood experiences, economic, education, family dynamics, food, greenspace, neighborhood, social, stress, urbanicity, violence, and other. Additional information on health outcomes, studies evaluating both chemical and non-chemical stressors, and animal studies are provided. This review provides evidence that non-chemical stressors found in a child’s social environment do influence their health and well-being in both beneficial (e.g., salutatory effects of greenspace and social support) and adverse (e.g., poor relationships between health and selected non-chemical stressors such as economics, educational attainment, exposure to violence, stress) ways. Conclusions: This literature review identified a paucity of studies addressing the combined effects of chemical and non-chemical stressors and children’s health and well-being. This literature review was further complicated by inconsistencies in terminology, methodologies, and the value of non-chemical stressor research in different scientific disciplines. Despite these limitations, this review showed the importance of considering non-chemical stressors from a child’s social environment when addressing children’s environmental health considerations.

Abstract
Imidacloprid (IMI) is a typical neonicotinoid with the largest usage in agricultural orchards in China. The long-term repeated use and the lack of proper protective measures may result in rural farmers and people living near orchards to be inevitably exposed to IMI. Excessive exposure may cause potential adverse effects on human health. To explore the characteristics of human exposure to IMI in urine, different groups of people, including pesticide applicators and their family members, and kindergarten children near IMI-applied orchards were investigated. The IMI and metabolite, 6-chloronicotinic acid (6-CNA), concentrations in urine were creatinine-adjusted to compensate for a possible dilution effect. Target analytes were detected in 100% of 1926 urine samples. The results showed that the IMI concentration in the 1-d urine from the rural residents significantly increased after a spraying event (p < 0.05) and reached the highest concentration (Geomean: 16.42 μg/g creatinine for IMI; 7.33 μg/g creatinine for 6-CNA) in the 2-d urine samples. The pesticide applicators of different genders had almost the same exposure environment (IMI Geomean of 13.25 μg/g creatinine for males and 14.71 μg/g creatinine for females) (p > 0.05). Females had higher exposure concentrations than that of males. People from different villages demonstrated diverse exposure levels with Geomean differences of 1.13-3.28 fold. For 3-6 years-old children, urinary concentrations from the rural group (Geomean: 3.73 μg/g creatinine for IMI; 3.95 μg/g creatinine for 6-CNA) were significantly higher than that of the urban group (Geomean: 1.13 μg/g creatinine for IMI; 0.88 μg/g creatinine for 6-CNA) (p = 0.00001), and the younger children tended to have higher exposure risk. Our findings showed that people in the Henan orchard areas were likely exposed to IMI to varying degrees. Further research on the health risk evaluation of IMI and controlling the exposure risks is needed.

Abstract
This study examined the associations between nonoccupational exposure to agricultural work, through husband or head of household (H/HH) occupation, and urinary bladder cancer risk among Egyptian women. A total of 1,167 women (388 bladder cases and 779 age- and residence-matched, population-based controls) from a multicenter case-control study were included in the analysis. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using logistic regression. Among married women, those who reported H/HH to be an agricultural worker were at increased risk for bladder cancer as compared to those with H/HH in other occupations, AOR = 1.54, 95% CI [1.09, 2.18]; among unmarried women the risk was not increased, AOR = 0.77, 95% CI [0.45, 1.32]. Nonoccupational exposure to agricultural work, defined as living with an agricultural worker, increased the risk for bladder cancer among married Egyptian women.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the deleterious effects of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in experimentally exposed broiler birds. The experiment was carried out on one day old (n = 120) broiler chicks. The CPF was reconstituted in corn oil as vehicle (1 ml/kg) to obtain a final concentration of a single dose to the birds 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) for fourteen days of the experiment through the stomach tube. The control group was given corn oil 1 ml/kg only. Birds exposed to high dose (20 mg/kg BW) showed signs of toxicity (salivation, lacrimation, gasping, convulsions, frequent defecation and tremors). The birds exposed to 10 and 20 mg/kg showed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased body weight. Significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased hematological parameters i.e. total erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and total leukocyte were observed in the high dosed group as compared to control and other low dosed fed birds. Serum protein and albumin showed a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase in high dosed CPF fed birds. Non significant results were observed in the case of globulin. The acetylcholinestrease (AChE) activity was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased in blood, serum and plasma in CPF fed birds compared to control birds. In CPF fed birds as compared to control birds we found significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Necrotic and degenerative changes were observed on histopathological investigations of spleen, kidneys, bursa of Fabricius, thymus and brain tissues in CPF exposed birds. In conclusion the chlorpyrifos induced toxicopathological effects on health biomarkers of broiler chicks.

Abstract
Although speech and language deficits are common in children and strongly associated with poor educational and social outcomes, little attention has been paid to the antecedents. In this study we used the information from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children to examine preconception and prenatal environmental risk factors that were related to communication difficulties in children using the Children’s Communication Checklist (CCC). We used an exposome-wide approach to identify environmental factors univariably associated with the CCC. Taking account of the False Discovery rate, we used a P value of 0.000157 to identify 621 of 3855 items tested. These were then subjected to a series of stepwise linear regression analyses, firstly within 10 domains: personal characteristics, health, development, education, socio-economic variables, lifestyle, home and social environments, life events and chemical and other exposures; and then with the predictive variables from each domain. The final model consisted of 19 variables independently associated with the communication scale. These variables suggested 6 possible mechanisms: stressors primarily associated with socio-economic disadvantage although other lifestyle choices such as a social network of family or friends can ameliorate these effects; indicators of future parenting skills primarily associated with aspects of parental personality; aspects of the home environment; poor maternal health with a novel finding concerning maternal hearing loss; and maternal education which was partially mediated by the child’s IQ. Finally, there may be a mechanism via the maternal diet in pregnancy in particular the consumption of fatty or processed foods. This is the subject of ongoing investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Home and garden pesticide use has been linked to cancer and other health outcomes in numerous epidemiological studies. Exposure has generally been self-reported, so the assessment is potentially limited by recall bias and lack of information on specific chemicals. OBJECTIVES As part of an integrated assessment of residential pesticide exposure, we identified active ingredients and described patterns of storage and use. METHODS During a home interview of 500 residentially stable households enrolled in the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study during 2001-2006, trained interviewers inventoried residential pesticide products and queried participants about their storage and use. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration numbers, recorded from pesticide product labels, and pesticide chemical codes were matched to public databases to obtain information on active ingredients and chemical class. Poisson regression was used to identify independent predictors of pesticide storage. Analyses were restricted to 259 participating control households. RESULTS Ninety-five percent (246 of 259) of the control households stored at least one pesticide product (median, 4). Indicators of higher sociodemographic status predicted more products in storage. We identified the most common characteristics: storage areas (garage, 40%; kitchen, 20%), pests treated (ants, 33%; weeds, 20%), pesticide types (insecticides, 46%; herbicides, 24%), chemical classes (pyrethroids, 77%; botanicals, 50%), active ingredients (pyrethrins, 43%) and synergists (piperonyl butoxide, 42%). Products could contain multiple active ingredients. CONCLUSIONS Our data on specific active ingredients and patterns of storage and use will inform future etiologic analyses of residential pesticide exposures from self-reported data, particularly among households with young children.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to investigate the potential for selection bias in published case-control studies on household exposure to pesticides and childhood acute leukemia; most studies have reported positive findings. Items to evaluate the potential for selection bias were first developed. They focused on the source populations that gave rise to cases and controls, the probabilistic selection of subjects from the source, and the losses of the subjects actually selected. A quantitative assessment of bias was also carried out. Potential sources of selection bias were found in all the studies, but none of them were observed across all the studies. Main sources of potential bias were a non-concurrent selection of controls with respect to cases, the use of control diagnoses possibly caused by pesticide exposure in hospital-based studies, and non-participation of selected eligible subjects. A quantitative assessment of bias concluded that non-participation alone could not explain the reported positive associations. We conclude that overall, selection bias, as a likely source of bias in these studies, does not seem to explain their positive findings. Our analysis provides arguments strengthening the conclusions on associations reported in earlier studies.

Abstract
Although birth cohort studies can stand on their own, there are a number of different types of sub-studies that can add value to the overall project. These can be summarised within four main categories: (A) more detailed observations of relatively small subgroups aimed at describing mechanisms and processes; (B) nested case-control studies; (C) use of detailed observations to validate data collection by questionnaire or interview; (D) randomised controlled trials. For each category we give examples of ways in which they have been employed in current pregnancy birth cohort studies.
