Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy may help improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes (such as fewer preterm birth and low birthweight babies) and reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (such as severe postpartum haemorrhage). OBJECTIVES To examine whether vitamin D supplementation alone or in combination with calcium or other vitamins and minerals given to women during pregnancy can safely improve certain maternal and neonatal outcomes. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Trials Register (which includes results of comprehensive searches of CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and relevant conference proceedings) (3 December 2022). We also searched the reference lists of retrieved studies. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised and quasi-randomised trials evaluating the effect of supplementation with vitamin D alone or in combination with other micronutrients for women during pregnancy in comparison to placebo or no intervention. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently i) assessed the eligibility of studies against the inclusion criteria, ii) assessed trustworthiness based on pre-defined criteria of scientific integrity, iii) extracted data from included studies, and iv) assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. We assessed the certainty of the evidence using the GRADE approach. MAIN RESULTS The previous version of this review included 30 studies; in this update, we have removed 20 of these studies to 'awaiting classification' following assessments of trustworthiness, one study has been excluded, and one new study included. This current review has a total of 10 included studies, 117 excluded studies, 34 studies in awaiting assessment, and seven ongoing studies. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence. This removal of the studies resulted in evidence that was downgraded to low-certainty or very low-certainty due to study design limitations, inconsistency between studies, and imprecision. Supplementation with vitamin D compared to no intervention or a placebo A total of eight studies involving 2313 pregnant women were included in this comparison. We assessed four studies as having a low risk of bias for most domains and four studies as having high risk or unclear risk of bias for most domains. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of supplementation with vitamin D during pregnancy compared to placebo or no intervention on pre-eclampsia (risk ratio (RR) 0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21 to 1.33; 1 study, 165 women), gestational diabetes (RR 0.53, 95% CI 0.03 to 8.28; 1 study, 165 women), preterm birth (< 37 weeks) (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.25 to 2.33; 3 studies, 1368 women), nephritic syndrome (RR 0.17, 95% CI 0.01 to 4.06; 1 study, 135 women), or hypercalcaemia (1 study; no cases reported). Supplementation with vitamin D during pregnancy may reduce the risk of severe postpartum haemorrhage; however, only one study reported this outcome (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.51 to 0.91; 1 study, 1134 women; low-certainty evidence) and may reduce the risk of low birthweight; however, the upper CI suggests that an increase in risk cannot be ruled out (RR 0.69, 95% CI 0.44 to 1.08; 3 studies, 371 infants; low-certainty evidence). Supplementation with vitamin D + calcium compared to no intervention or a placebo One study involving 84 pregnant women was included in this comparison. Overall, this study was at moderate to high risk of bias. Pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and maternal adverse events were not reported. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of supplementation with vitamin D and calcium on preterm birth (RR not estimable; very low-certainty evidence) or for low birthweight (RR 1.45, 95% CI 0.14 to 14.94; very low-certainty evidence) compared to women who received placebo or no intervention. Supplementation with vitamin D + calcium + other vitamins and minerals versus calcium + other vitamins and minerals (but no vitamin D) One study involving 1298 pregnant women was included in this comparison. We assessed this study as having a low risk of bias in all domains. Pre-eclampsia was not reported. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of supplementation with vitamin D, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals during pregnancy compared to no vitamin D on gestational diabetes (RR 0.42, 95% CI 0.10 to 1.73; very low-certainty evidence), maternal adverse events (hypercalcaemia no events and hypercalciuria RR 0.25, 95% CI 0.02 to 3.97; very low-certainty evidence), preterm birth (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.68 to 1.59; low-certainty evidence), or low birthweight (RR 1.12, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.51; low-certainty evidence). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS This updated review using the trustworthy assessment tool removed 21 studies from the previous update and added one new study for a total of 10 included studies. In this setting, supplementation with vitamin D alone compared to no intervention or a placebo resulted in very uncertain evidence on pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, or nephritic syndrome. It may reduce the risk of severe postpartum haemorrhage; however, only one study reported this outcome. It may also reduce the risk of low birthweight; however, the upper CI suggests that an increase in risk cannot be ruled out. Supplementation with vitamin D and calcium versus placebo or no intervention resulted in very uncertain evidence on preterm birth and low birthweight. Pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and maternal adverse events were not reported in the only study included in this comparison. Supplementation with vitamin D + calcium + other vitamins and minerals versus calcium + other vitamins and minerals (but no vitamin D) resulted in very uncertain evidence on gestational diabetes and maternal adverse events (hypercalciuria) and uncertain evidence on preterm birth and low birthweight. Pre-eclampsia was not reported in the only study included in this comparison. All findings warrant further research. Additional rigorous, high-quality, and larger randomised trials are required to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy, particularly in relation to the risk of maternal adverse events.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) exposure in mothers can cause respiratory issues in newborns, but the exact toxicity mechanisms are not fully understood. Vitamin D deficiency in Cd-exposed rats is associated with increased cadmium accumulation in tissues. Finding a cost-effective medication that is vital for the body while also reducing the effects of poisoning is crucial in treating poisonings. To investigate the mechanisms of Cd-induced lung toxicity, we examined the impact of prolonged Cd exposure in female rats before pregnancy on newborn lung health, focusing on sera TNF-α level, lung P53, Foxo1 mRNA, and lung VEGF, and BMP-4 protein level. A total of 50 rats were divided into control, Cd, Cd+Vitamin D, Cd+Mg, and Cd + Vitamin D+Mg groups. Cd exposure resulted in higher serum TNF-α levels and a significant rise in P53 mRNA levels. Additionally, the occurrence of hemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration, and thickening of alveolar walls decreased following treatment with vitamin D + Mg. Although Cd did not affect the newborns' body weight, it did impair their lung function. These findings suggest that the Cd-induced increase in the P53 gene expression could be alleviated by vitamin D and Mg, along with the elevation of VEGF and BMP-4 proteins and Foxo1 gene expression. The study revealed that environmental toxins can sometimes harm molecules and proteins, leading to damage in critical fetal tissues. However, these issues can be mitigated through essential supplements. STRUCTURED ABSTRACT: The increasing role of Cd in the erratic behavior of numerous biological and molecular entities, notably the development of fetal lung tissue, has made it beneficial to investigate the possible adverse effects of Cd exposure in pregnant mothers and fetal organ development, where instinctive molecular events occur. Researchers are encouraged to create new aspects of medications to reduce clinical symptoms and improve the quality of life due to exposure to metal toxins, particularly in industrialized countries. The present study aimed to evaluate histopathological and molecular modifications of fetal lungs caused by maternal Cd toxicosis and evaluate the possible ameliorating effects of vitamin D and Mg alone and in combination with fetal lung developmental abnormalities, followed by maternal toxin induction, which can be generalized to humans. Fifty female Wistar rats were purchased from the Pasteur Institute of Iran. To induce the model, cadmium at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight was injected intraperitoneally into the female rats over 28 days before mating (5 days after injection in a week). Afterward, the female rats were randomly divided into type IV polycarbonate cages and mated with healthy male rats. The pregnancy was confirmed by observation of the vaginal plaque, which was subsequently observed, and the number of days of embryo formation was calculated. Subsequently, the pregnant rats were assigned to the following groups and received PBS, vitamin D, Mg, or vitamin D + Mg. At the end of the nine-day treatment period (the 6th day of pregnancy to the 14th day), the neonates were born vaginally, and their body weight and mortality were recorded. The P53 and Foxo1 gene expression levels in the left and right lobes of the homogenized lungs of the newborns in each group were assessed. TNF-alpha was detected in the sera collected from the newborns by ELISA. The isolated left and right lung tissues were homogenized in radioimmunoprecipitation assay (RIPA) buffer and the superior phase was collected to determine the total protein content by Lowry's method and VEGF and BMP-4 protein levels. The obtained lung samples from newborn rats were fixed in a 10% formalin solution for tissue processing. The fixed samples were embedded in paraffin, and serial paraffin sections were prepared for hematoxylin and eosin staining. This study is the first to examine how maternal Cd exposure affects fetal lung development and to estimate the impact of prescribing Mg and vitamin D during pregnancy. The present study assessed the effects of a repeated dose of Cd for 4 weeks before pregnancy on the lung development of newborn rats born to mothers treated with vitamin D and Mg. The results showed that the P53 gene was overexpressed in the model group, while Foxo1 gene expression was downregulated, negatively impacting the lung structure and developmental indices of the fetuses. Therefore, the intake of vitamin D and Mg may contribute to improving the various stages of Cd-induced lung injury by modulating lung inflammation and mucosal secretion while also positively influencing the number of surviving offspring.

Abstract
Vascular aging exacerbates diabetes-associated vascular damage, a major cause of microvascular and macrovascular complications. This study aimed to elucidate key genes and pathways underlying vascular aging in diabetes using integrated bioinformatics and machine learning approaches. Gene expression datasets related to vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) senescence and diabetic vascular aging were analyzed. Differential expression analysis identified 428 genes associated with VSMC senescence. Functional enrichment revealed their involvement in cellular senescence, ECM-receptor interaction, PI3K-Akt and AGE-RAGE signaling pathways. Further analysis of diabetic vascular aging datasets revealed 52 differentially expressed genes, enriched in AMPK signaling, AGE-RAGE signaling, cellular senescence, and VEGF signaling pathways. Machine learning algorithms, including LASSO regression and SVM-RFE, pinpointed six key genes: TFB1M, FOXRED2, LY75, DALRD3, PI4K2B, and NDOR1. Immune cell infiltration analysis demonstrated correlations between diabetic vascular aging, the identified key genes, and infiltration levels of plasma cells, M1 macrophages, CD8+ T cells, eosinophils, and regulatory T cells. In conclusion, this study identified six pivotal genes (TFB1M, FOXRED2, LY75, DALRD3, PI4K2B, and NDOR1) closely associated with diabetic vascular aging through integrative bioinformatics and machine learning approaches. These genes are linked to alterations in the immune microenvironment during diabetic vascular aging. This study provides a reference and basis for molecular mechanism research, biomarker mining, and diagnosis and treatment evaluation of diabetes-related vascular aging.

Abstract
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, are a leading cause of serious and debilitating complications that affect both the mother and the fetus. Despite the occurrence and the health implications of these disorders there is still relatively limited evidence on the molecular underpinnings of the pathophysiology. An area that has come to the fore with regard to its influence on health and disease is the microbiome. While there are several microbiome niches on and within the body, the distal end of the gut harbors the largest of these impacting on many different systems of the body including the central nervous system, the immune system, and the reproductive system. While the role of the microbiome in hypertensive disorders, including pre-eclampsia, has not been fully elucidated some studies have indicated that several of the symptoms of these disorders are linked to an altered gut microbiome. In this review, we examine both pre-eclampsia and microbiome literature to summarize the current knowledge on whether the microbiome drives the symptoms of pre-eclampsia or if the aberrant microbiome is a consequence of this condition. Despite the paucity of studies, obvious gut microbiome changes have been noted in women with pre-eclampsia and the individual symptoms associated with the condition. Yet further research is required to fully elucidate the role of the microbiome and the significance it plays in the development of the symptoms. Regardless of this, the literature highlights the potential for a microbiome targeted intervention such as dietary changes or prebiotic and probiotics to reduce the impact of some aspects of these disorders.

Abstract
The synthesis and absorption of Vitamin D play crucial roles in numerous bodily functions, yet deficiencies persist due to factors like insufficient sunlight exposure and dietary inadequacy. Research underscores the significance of lifestyle elements such as diet, sun exposure, and physical activity in maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels. Strategies aimed at tackling deficiencies emphasize supplementation alongside lifestyle adjustments, especially in regions with abundant sunlight like the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Despite the abundance of sunshine in the Arab world, there remains a prevalent issue of Vitamin D deficiency. This problem arises from various factors, including cultural practices such as traditional clothing covering most skin areas, which limit sun exposure, and environmental factors like air pollution that reduce UV penetration. Dietary habits and lifestyle choices also contribute to this deficiency. Dealing with the ongoing pandemic requires a focused effort to enhance awareness. While some individuals may recognize common diseases caused by Vitamin D deficiency, such as rickets and osteomalacia, many remain unaware of the broader health risks associated with the condition, including non-skeletal manifestations. Additionally, there is a lack of understanding regarding the numerous hidden benefits of this hormone. Therefore, prioritizing educational initiatives that delve into these aspects is essential to effectively combat the current health crisis. This literature review aims to report both skeletal and extraskeletal consequences of hypovitaminosis and briefly discuss the cause of paradoxical vitamin D deficiency in sunny regions like the MENA. This was done by reviewing pertinent articles published between January 2000 and January 2024, sourced from databases such as PubMed, UpToDate, Scopus, and CINAHL, focusing exclusively on English language literature and using keywords such as "Vitamin D deficiency" and "Extraskeletal manifestations."

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases represent a significant complication arising from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vascular calcification is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Reducing vascular calcification is therefore critical to reducing mortality in CKD patients. HYPOTHESIS This study aims to establish a vascular calcification model in rats with CKD by administering subcutaneous injections of calcitriol in combination with a high-calcium and high-phosphorus diet. METHODS The rats were divided into the CKD vascular calcification model group (subtotal nephrectomy+ [SNx+]) and the sham-operated control group (subtotal nephrectomy- [SNx-]). The rats in the SNx(+) group were administered high-calcium and high-phosphorus feeds following a 5/6 nephrectomy. Calcitriol (1 μg/kg, three times a week) was injected subcutaneously at weeks 0, 4, 8, and 12 after the operation. Measurements of body weight, urine, serum biochemical indicators and vascular calcification level were conducted in rats. RESULTS (1) Compared with the SNx(-) group, rats in the SNx(+) group experienced an increase in 24-h urine output, urinary phosphorus, and urinary microprotein excretion, along with the development of severe anemia. Additionally, there was a notable elevation in serum phosphorus, blood urea nitrogen, blood creatinine, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), and intact parathyroid hormone levels, accompanied by severe hypoproteinemia at week 12. (2) The results of micro-compuyed tomography (μCT) and alizarin S staining of the thoracic aorta demonstrated an increase in vascular calcification in the SNx(+) group. (3) The expression levels of vascular calcification-related proteins were increased. CONCLUSIONS The administration of calcitriol combined with a high-calcium and high-phosphorus diet was found to induce vascular calcification in CKD rats, leading to a disturbance in mineral metabolism. Vascular calcification was effectively induced in CKD rats after 12 weeks of modeling, thereby presenting a novel approach for establishing a vascular calcification model in CKD rats, helping to elucidate this clinical condition and its underlying molecular mechanisms.

Phase angle and vitamin D can reflect the state of the body cells, and the two may interact with each other. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the relationship between PA and vitamin D. Taking women in early pregnancy as our study subjects, we found that PA had a positive effect on vitamin D levels. Body composition phase angle, as a noninvasive, easy-to-operate, and easy-to-monitor indicator, can be used an early screening index for vitamin D nutrition levels in early pregnancy, and the cutoff value was 4.95°.

Abstract
Objectives Preeclampsia is one of the most frequent pregnancy disorders, with a global incidence of 2%-8%. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is an essential mineral for human health; some studies suggest link between 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and preeclampsia, while others offer contradictory findings. Thus, the goal of this study is to evaluate the relationships between maternal 25- hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and the risk of preeclampsia. In addition to this, our study also evaluates the effects of 25- hydroxyvitamin D supplementation on the incidence of preeclampsia. Therefore, assessing 25- hydroxyvitamin D's potential as a possible intervention to lower the risk of preeclampsia. Methods The Medline database was queried from inception until July 2021 for randomized controlled trials and observational studies without any restrictions. The studies assessing the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and preeclampsia and the impact of 25-hydroxyvitamin D supplementation on the incidence of preeclampsia were incorporated. The results were reported using a random-effects meta-analysis and the Mantel-Haenszel odds ratio. A p-value of <0.05 was considered significant for the analysis. Results This analysis includes 34 papers, including 10 randomized controlled trials and 24 observational studies. According to our pooled analysis, 25-hydroxyvitamin D supplementation was significantly associated with a lower risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women (OR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.40-0.63; p = 0.00001), while 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia (OR: 4.30; 95 % CI: 2.57-7.18; p < 0.00001, OR: 1.71; 95 % Cl: 1.27-2.32; p = 0.0005, OR 1.61; 95 % Cl: 1.21-2.16; p = 0.001). Conclusion Results suggest that 25-hydroxyvitamin D has a significant relationship with preeclampsia as confirmed by the findings that low maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations cause increased risk of preeclampsia while 25-hydroxyvitamin D supplementation reduces the incidence of preeclampsia. Our findings indicate that 25-hydroxyvitamin D supplementation can be used as a possible intervention strategy in preventing one of the most common causes of maternal mortality around the world, preeclampsia.

Abstract
Cell therapies require control over the cellular response under standardized conditions to ensure continuous delivery of therapeutic agents. Cell encapsulation in biomaterials can be particularly effective at providing cells with a uniformly supportive and permissive cell microenvironment. In this study, two microfluidic droplet device designs were used to successfully encapsulate equine mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) into photopolymerized polyethylene glycol norbornene (PEGNB) microscale (∼100-200 μm) hydrogel particles (microgels) in a single on-chip step. To overcome the slow cross-linking kinetics of thiol-ene reactions, long dithiol linkers were used in combination with a polymerization chamber customized to achieve precise retention time for microgels while maintaining cytocompatibility. Thus, homogeneous cell-laden microgels could be continuously fabricated in a high-throughput fashion. Varying linker length mediated both the gel formation rate and material physical properties (stiffness, mass transport, and mesh size) of fabricated microgels. Postencapsulation cell viability and therapeutic indicators of MSCs were evaluated over 14 days, during which the viability remained at least 90%. Gene expression of selected cytokines was not adversely affected by microencapsulation compared to monolayer MSCs. Notably, PEGNB-3.5k microgels rendered significant elevation in FGF-2 and TGF-β on the transcription level, and conditioned media collected from these cultures showed robust promotion in the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts. Collectively, standardized MSC on-chip encapsulation will lead to informed and precise translation to clinical studies, ultimately advancing a variety of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine practices.

Abstract
Physiologically, smooth muscle cells (SMC) and nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial cells strictly cooperate to maintain vasal homeostasis. In atherosclerosis, where this equilibrium is altered, molecules providing exogenous NO and able to inhibit SMC proliferation may represent valuable antiatherosclerotic agents. Searching for dual antiproliferative and NO-donor molecules, we found that furoxans significantly decreased SMC proliferation in vitro, albeit with different potencies. We therefore assessed whether this property is dependent on their thiol-induced ring opening. Indeed, while furazans (analogues unable to release NO) are not effective, furoxans' inhibitory potency parallels with the electron-attractor capacity of the group in 3 of the ring, making this effect tunable. To demonstrate whether their specific block on G1-S phase could be NO-dependent, we supplemented SMCs with furoxans and inhibitors of GMP- and/or of the polyamine pathway, which regulate NO-induced SMC proliferation, but they failed in preventing the antiproliferative effect. To find the real mechanism of this property, our proteomics studies revealed that eleven cellular proteins (with SUMO1 being central) and networks involved in cell homeostasis/proliferation are modulated by furoxans, probably by interaction with adducts generated after degradation. Altogether, thanks to their dual effect and pharmacological flexibility, furoxans may be evaluated in the future as antiatherosclerotic molecules.

Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate the algorithm of various influential factors relating to the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration at delivery and mode of delivery. The investigation constituted a secondary analysis using data collected as part of the Khuzestan Vitamin D Deficiency Screening Program in Pregnancy, which is a stratified randomized vitamin D supplementation-controlled trial comprising 1649 eligible pregnant women. The Bayesian Network (BN) method was utilized to determine the association algorithm between diverse influential factors associated with maternal vitamin D and mode of delivery. The optimized intelligent BN algorithm revealed that women presenting with moderate (35.67%; 95% CI: 33.36-37.96) and severe vitamin D deficiency (47.22%; 95% CI: 44.81-49.63) at delivery were more likely to undergo cesarean section than those presenting with normal concentrations of this nutritional hormone (18.62%; 95% CI: 16.74-20.5). The occurrence probabilities of preeclampsia in mothers with normal, moderate, and severe vitamin D deficiency at delivery were (1.5%; 95% CI: 0.92-2.09), (14.01%; 95% CI: 12.33-15.68), and (26.81%; 95% CI: 24.67-28.95), respectively. Additionally, mothers with moderate (11.81%; 95% CI: 10.25-13.36) and severe (27.86%; 95% CI: 25.69-30.02) vitamin D deficiency exhibited a higher probability of preterm delivery in comparison to those presenting with normal concentrations (1.12%; 95% CI: 0.62-1.63). This study demonstrated that the vitamin D status of pregnant women at delivery could directly affect the mode of delivery and indirectly through maternal complications, such as preeclampsia and preterm delivery, leading to a higher occurrence probability of cesarean section.

Abstract
The importance of the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, is increasing as a requirement of the aging population in developed countries and the sustainability of healthcare. Similarly, the 2013-2030 action plan of the WHO for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases seeks these achievements. Adequate lifestyle changes, alone or with the necessary treatments, could reduce the risk of mortality or the deterioration of quality of life. In our recent work, we summarized the role of two central factors, i.e., appropriate levels of vitamin D and SIRT1, which are connected to adequate lifestyles with beneficial effects on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. Both of these factors have received increased attention in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic as they both take part in regulation of the main metabolic processes, i.e., lipid/glucose/energy homeostasis, oxidative stress, redox balance, and cell fate, as well as in the healthy regulation of the immune system. Vitamin D and SIRT1 have direct and indirect influence of the regulation of transcription and epigenetic changes and are related to cytoplasmic signaling pathways such as PLC/DAG/IP3/PKC/MAPK, MEK/Erk, insulin/mTOR/cell growth, proliferation; leptin/PI3K-Akt-mTORC1, Akt/NFĸB/COX-2, NFĸB/TNFα, IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and AMPK/PGC-1α/GLUT4, among others. Through their proper regulation, they maintain normal body weight, lipid profile, insulin secretion and sensitivity, balance between the pro- and anti-inflammatory processes under normal conditions and infections, maintain endothelial health; balance cell differentiation, proliferation, and fate; and balance the circadian rhythm of the cellular metabolism. The role of these two molecules is interconnected in the molecular network, and they regulate each other in several layers of the homeostasis of energy and the cellular metabolism. Both have a central role in the maintenance of healthy and balanced immune regulation and redox reactions; therefore, they could constitute promising targets either for prevention or as complementary therapies to achieve a better quality of life, at any age, for healthy people and patients under chronic conditions.

The Association between Hemodynamically Significant Patent Ductus Arteriosus and 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels in Preterm Infants ≤32 Weeks Gestational Age. Fetal Pediatr Pathol 2023. Abstract
INTRODUCTION We investigated the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels and the development of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) in preterm infants. METHODS Newborns having a gestational age (GA) of ≤32 weeks with hsPDA consisted the study group (n = 25, 20%), while newborns ≤32 weeks of GA without PDA/hsPDA were the control group (n = 97, 80%). RESULTS The study group had lower GA, birth weight (BW) and 25-OHD levels (p < 0.0001, p = 0.002 and p = 0.003, respectively). After adjusting for the effects of GA, BW and the presence of respiratory distress syndrome, multivariable logistic regression analyses demonstrated that preterm infants with low 25-OHD levels were 6.407 (95% CI: 1.656-24.788, p = 0.007) times more likely to experience hsPDA than preterm infants with normal 25-OHD levels. Every 1 ng/mL increase in 25-OHD levels decreased the probability of hsPDA (OR: 0.894, 95% CI: 0.816-0.98, p = 0.016). Conclusion: Low 25-OHD levels may have a role in the development of hsPDA.

Abstract
The integrity of retinal endothelial cell (EC) is essential for establishing and maintaining the retinal blood barrier to ensure proper vision. Vitamin D is a hormone with known protective roles in EC function. The majority of vitamin D action is mediated through the vitamin D receptor (VDR). VDR is a nuclear receptor whose engagement by vitamin D impacts the expression of many genes with important roles in regulation of angiogenesis and inflammation. Although many studies have investigated vitamin D-VDR action in cardiovascular protection and tumor angiogenesis, its impact on retinal EC function and regulation of ocular angiogenesis and inflammation is exceedingly limited. We previously showed calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is a potent inhibitor of retinal neovascularization in vivo and retinal EC capillary morphogenesis in vitro. Here, using retinal EC prepared from wild-type (Vdr+/+) and VDR-deficient (Vdr-/-) mice, we show that retinal EC express VDR and its expression is induced by calcitriol. The lack of VDR expression had a significant impact on endothelial cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Vdr-/- retinal EC proliferated at a slower rate and were more adherent and less migratory. They also exhibited increased expression levels of inflammatory markers driven in part by sustained activation of STAT1 and NF-κB pathways and were more sensitive to oxidative challenge. These changes were attributed, in part, to down-regulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthetase, enhanced hepcidin expression, and increased intracellular iron levels. Taken together, our results indicate that VDR expression plays a fundamental role in maintaining the proper angiogenic and inflammatory state of retinal EC.

Abstract
Deficiency in vitamin D (VitD), a lipid-soluble vitamin and steroid hormone, affects approximately 24% to 40% of the population of the Western world. In addition to its well-documented effects on the musculoskeletal system, VitD also contributes importantly to the promotion and preservation of cardiovascular health via modulating the immune and inflammatory functions and regulating cell proliferation and migration, endothelial function, renin expression, and extracellular matrix homeostasis. This brief overview focuses on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular effects of VitD and the cellular, molecular, and functional changes that occur in the circulatory system in VitD deficiency (VDD). It explores the links among VDD and adverse vascular remodeling, endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, and increased risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Improved understanding of the complex role of VDD in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and vascular cognitive impairment is crucial for all cardiologists, dietitians, and geriatricians, as VDD presents an easy target for intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women with preeclampsia frequently have disorders of calcium metabolism during their pregnancies, including hypocalciuria and low vitamin D levels. The link between fetal sex and vitamin D and vitamin D binding protein levels in pregnancy and preeclampsia is not clear. AIM Present study was designed to explore sex-specific variations in vitamin D and vitamin D binding protein levels in maternal and umbilical cord blood samples for age and gestation matched 20 primigravida normotensive and 20 primigravida with preeclampsia with a singleton pregnancy. METHODS Routine investigations, vitamin D binding protein (VDBP), and serum vitamin D in both maternal serum and cord blood were measured in both groups. Association between maternal and cord blood vitamin D levels was highly positive in both cases and control with babies of either sex. RESULTS This association exhibited sexual dimorphism between cord blood vitamin D and vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) suggesting that the occurrence of pregnancy complications differs according to fetal sex with a higher cardiovascular and metabolic load for the mother in the presence of a male fetus. CONCLUSION Vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) measurement along with vitamin D level should be advised in clinical practice for early detection and screening.

Abstract
Objective: This study investigated effect of zaprinast and avanafil on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), bone morphogenic protein (BMP) 4 and 7, and vitamin D3 levels against the negative effect of dexamethazone.Method: Rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6). Control: Empty a syringe was immersed and removed subcutaneously. Dexamethasone (DEX): 120 µg/kg DEX was injected subcutaneously once a day for 28 days. DEX + zaprinast and DEX + avanafil groups: 10 mg/kg zaprinast and avanafil were administrated to rats in addition to the same procedure in the DEX, respectively. VitaminD3, VEGF, BMP4 and 7 levels by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and angiogenesis by histopathological/immunohistochemical were evaluated.Results: BMP4 values in the DEX were lower than the other groups (p < .05). DEX + zaprinast and DEX + avanafil exhibited an increase in all the parameters compared to the control and DEX (p < .05). However, these were not significant for the DEX + zaprinast (p > .05). Also, there was a significant increase in angiogenesis in the DEX + zaprinast and DEX + avanafil.Conclusion: Zaprinast and significantly avanafil induced vitamin D3, BMP4 and 7 levels by increasing angiogenesis in renal.

Abstract
Objectives To explore the impacts of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3
(1,25(OH)2D3) on the proliferation,
migration, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1)
secretion of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a high
glucose environment and its possible mechanism. Methods We extracted VSMCs from the thoracic aorta of a male Sprague–Dawley
rats before culturing them in a 25-mM glucose-containing medium
in the presence or absence of 1,25(OH)2D3
(10−9 –10−7 M). Cell proliferation
was determined by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation assays.
Subsequently, cell migratory capacity was examined by performing
a transwell assay. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was
conducted to assess MCP-1 levels. Protein levels of matrix
metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), mitogen-activated protein kinases
(MAPKs), cyclin D1, and phosphorylated MAPKs were determined by
immunoblotting. Results 1,25(OH)2D3 significantly suppressed the
proliferation, migration, and MCP-1 secretion of VSMCs mediated
by high glucose in a dose-dependent manner, diminished the
enhanced protein expression of MMP-9 and cyclin D1, and
attenuated MAPK phosphorylation. The p38 inhibitor SB203580 and
ERK1/2 inhibitor PD98059 suppressed high glucose-mediated
upregulation of MMP-9 and cyclin D1 protein expression and MCP-1
secretion, respectively. Conclusions 1,25(OH)2D3 ameliorates high glucose-mediated
proliferation, migration, and MCP-1 secretion of VSMCs by
inhibiting MAPK phosphorylation, implying a potential
therapeutic approach using 1,25(OH)2D3 for
diabetic macrovascular complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effect of vardenafil, tadalafil, and udenafil from phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5Is) on bone morphogenic-protein (BMP)2 and 4 levels, along with angiogenesis in ovariectomized rat's kidney. METHOD Rats were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10). Sham: abdomen was opened, and closed. OVX: ovaries were removed. OVX + vardenafil, OVX + tadalafil, and OVX + udenafil groups: ovaries were removed and closed, and after 6 months from postoperative, 10 mg/kg of vardenafil, tadalafil, and udenafil were administrated as daily a single-dose for 60 days, respectively. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations were performed for angiogenesis, and biochemical analysis for vascular endothelial growth-factor (VEGF), VitaminD3, BMP2 and 4 levels in rat's kidney. RESULTS VEGF, BMP2 and 4, VitaminD3, and angiogenesis were high in the all inhibitor groups compared with the sham and OVX (p < .05). However, BMP4 levels were only high in the OVX + tadalafil group (p < .05). CONCLUSION The results indicated that vardenafil, udenafil, and especially tadalafil increased VEGF, BMP2, and VitaminD3 levels.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific illness that is hypothesized to occur due to vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation in early pregnancy should be explored for preventing preeclampsia and promoting neonatal well-being. The present study follows a case-control analysis that aims to determine the effect of vitamin D supplements on reducing the probability of recurrent preeclampsia. We identified 59 patients for the control group without vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy, while 139 patients were included in the cases group of pregnant women with a history of preeclampsia who confirmed taking daily vitamin D supplements in either 2000 UI or 4000 UI until the 36th week of pregnancy. There were 61 (80.3%) patients with a normal serum vitamin D level measured at 32 weeks in the pregnant women who took a daily dose of 4000 UI vitamin D and 43 (68.3%) in those who took a 2000 UI dose of vitamin D, compared to just 32 (54.2%) in those who did not take vitamin D at all. Regarding the blood pressure of pregnant women measured at 32 weeks, it was observed that 20.3% were hypertensive in the no supplementation group, compared to only 11.1% and 6.6% in those who were taking vitamin D during pregnancy (p-value = 0.049). Serum vitamin D levels at 32 weeks were measured at an average value of 23.9 ng/mL, compared with 28.4 ng/mL in the group taking a 2000 UI daily dose and 33.6 in those who supplemented with 4000 UI daily (p-value < 0.001). Proteinuria was identified more often in the group at risk for preeclampsia who did not take vitamin D supplements, while systolic blood pressure (p-value = 0.036) as well as diastolic blood pressure (p-value = 0.012), were all identified to have significantly higher values in the pregnant women with a history of preeclampsia that did not take vitamin D during the current pregnancy. The significant risk factors for preeclampsia development in pregnant patients at risk are: insufficient vitamin D serum levels (<20 ng/mL), OR = 2.52; no vitamin D supplementation, OR = 1.46; more than two pregnancies, OR = 1.89; gestational diabetes mellitus, OR = 1.66; and cardiovascular comorbidities, OR = 2.18. These findings imply that vitamin D has a role in the preservation of placental function and, therefore, in the prevention of the development of late preeclampsia. Pregnant mothers who supplemented their diets with vitamin D were protected against preeclampsia recurrence. Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy may aid in the prevention of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

Dietary and serum vitamin D and preeclampsia risk in Chinese pregnant women: a matched case-control study. Br J Nutr 2022; 128:84-92. Abstract
The effect of vitamin D (VD) on the risk of preeclampsia (PE) is uncertain. Few of previous studies focused on the relationship between dietary VD intake and PE risk. Therefore, we conducted this 1:1 matched case-control study to explore the association of dietary VD intake and serum VD concentrations with PE risk in Chinese pregnant women. A total of 440 pairs of participants were recruited during March 2016 to June 2019. Dietary information was obtained using a seventy-eight-item semi-quantitative FFQ. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem MS. Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to estimate OR and 95 % CI. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were plotted to evaluate the dose-response relationship of dietary VD intake and serum VD concentrations with PE risk. Compared with the lowest quartile, the OR of the highest quartile were 0·45 (95 % CI 0·29, 0·71, Ptrend = 0·001) for VD dietary intake and 0·26 (95 % CI 0·11, 0·60, Ptrend = 0·003) for serum levels after adjusting for confounders. In addition, the RCS analysis suggested a reverse J-shaped relationship between dietary VD intake and PE risk (P-nonlinearity = 0·02). A similar association was also found between serum concentrations of total 25(OH)D and PE risk (P-nonlinearity = 0·02). In conclusion, this study provides evidence that higher dietary intake and serum levels of VD are associated with the lower risk of PE in Chinese pregnant women.

Abstract
Pre-eclampsia affects 3%-5% of pregnant women worldwide and is associated with a range of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including maternal and/or fetal death. It particularly affects those with chronic hypertension, pregestational diabetes mellitus or a family history of pre-eclampsia. Other than early delivery of the fetus, there is no cure for pre-eclampsia. Since diet or dietary supplements may affect the risk, we have carried out an up-to-date, narrative literature review to assess the relationship between nutrition and pre-eclampsia. Several nutrients and dietary factors previously believed to be implicated in the risk of pre-eclampsia have now been shown to have no effect on risk; these include vitamins C and E, magnesium, salt, ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish oils) and zinc. Body mass index is proportionally correlated with pre-eclampsia risk, therefore women should aim for a healthy pre-pregnancy body weight and avoid excessive gestational and interpregnancy weight gain. The association between the risk and progression of the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia may explain the apparent benefit of dietary modifications resulting from increased consumption of fruits and vegetables (≥400 g/day), plant-based foods and vegetable oils and a limited intake of foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Consuming a high-fibre diet (25-30 g/day) may attenuate dyslipidaemia and reduce blood pressure and inflammation. Other key nutrients that may mitigate the risk include increased calcium intake, a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement and an adequate vitamin D status. For those with a low selenium intake (such as those living in Europe), fish/seafood intake could be increased to improve selenium intake or selenium could be supplemented in the recommended multivitamin/mineral supplement. Milk-based probiotics have also been found to be beneficial in pregnant women at risk. Our recommendations are summarised in a table of guidance for women at particular risk of developing pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
A worldwide high prevalence of vitamin D (VD) deficiency has become of growing concern because of potential adverse effects on human health, including pregnant women and their offsprings. Beyond its classical function as a regulator of calcium and phosphate metabolism, together with its fundamental role in bone health in every stage of life, its deficiency has been associated to multiple adverse health effects. The classic effects of VD deficiency in pregnancy and neonates have been late hypocalcemia and nutritional rickets. Nevertheless, recent studies have linked VD to fertility and 25(OH)D with several clinical conditions in pregnancy: preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, higher incidence of cesarean section and preterm birth, while in infants, the clinical conditions are low birth weight, lower bone mass and possible relationship with the development of such diseases as bronchiolitis, asthma, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and autism included as VD non-classical actions. The supplementation with Vitamin D and achievement of optimal levels reduce maternal-fetal and newborn complications. Supplementation in children with VD deficiency reduces the risk of respiratory infections and possibly autoimmune diseases and autism. This review emphasizes the roles of Vitamin D deficiency and the consequences of intervention from preconception to infancy.

Abstract
ABSTRACT RNAs (circRNAs) play critical roles in many diseases, including atherosclerosis (AS). However, the role and underlying mechanism of circ_0002984 in AS remain unclear. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) treated with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) were used as a AS cell model. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was conducted to detect the expression of circ_0002984, miR-181b-5p and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). Cell proliferation was evaluated by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine assays. Cell migration was assessed using wound healing assay and transwell assay. All protein levels were analyzed by western blot assay. The interaction between miR-181b-5p and circ_0002984 or VEGFA was confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter, RNA Immunoprecipitation, and RNA pull-down assays. Circ_0002984 and VEGFA were overexpressed, and miR-181b-5p was downregulated in serum of AS patients and ox-LDL-stimulated VSMCs. Circ_0002984 silencing inhibited ox-LDL-induced proliferation and migration in VSMCs. MiR-181b-5p was a target of circ_0002984, and miR-181b-5p inhibition counteracted the suppressing effects of circ_0002984 downregulation on proliferation and migration in ox-LDL-stimulated VSMCs. Additionally, VEGFA was a downstream target of miR-181b-5p and VEGFA upregulation abolished the suppressive influence of miR-181b-5p on proliferation and migration in ox-LDL-exposed VSMCs. Furthermore, circ_0002984 depletion blocked phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase-AKT signaling pathway by regulating miR-181b-5p and VEGFA. Circ_0002984 downregulation suppressed cell proliferation and migration by regulating miR-181b-5p/VEGFA axis and phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase-AKT pathway in ox-LDL-stimulated VEGFA, providing a new mechanism for AS pathogenesis.

Abstract
Objectives Our aim in this study is to reveal the role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis of recurrent/chronic tonsillitis and to determine the expression of vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF). Material and Methods This study was conducted between September and February. Thirty‐two patients between the ages of 3 and 35 (mean age 9.71) with recurrent episodes of chronic tonsillitis were selected. Patients were divided into four groups according to their 25OHD levels. Patients with 25OHD levels 0–10 ng/ml were determined as Group 1, 11–20 ng/ml Group 2, 21–30 ng/ml Group 3, and 31–50 ng/ml control Group 4. Routine histological tissue sampling was performed for histopathological evaluation of the tonsillar tissues under light microscope (LM). Five micron sections were taken from the paraffin blocks and stained with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE) and Trichrome Masson (TCM). VEGF expression was examined immunohistochemically for each group. Results Our analysis showed VEGF expression in all study groups (32 tonsillar tissues). Group 1 and Group 2 histopathological scores were significantly higher than the other groups (p < .001). There were significant differences in VEGF expressions between the four groups (p < .001). 25OHD levels of the patients in Groups 1 and 2 with strong VEGF expression were significantly lower than the other groups (p < .001). Conclusions In conclusion, this study showed an increased angiogenesis in tonsil and an increase in VEGF expression of the tonsillar surface epithelium when blood serum 25OHD levels <20 ng/ml.

Abstract
Abnormal vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation has an important role in the pathogenesis of both atherosclerosis restenosis and hypertension. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been shown to stimulate VSMC proliferation. In addition, angiogenesis is one of the hallmarks of cancerous growth. VEGF is the key modulator for the initial stages of angiogenesis that acts through the endothelial-specific receptor tyrosine kinases (VEGFRs). VEGFR-2 blockage is a good approach for suppression of angiogenesis. In order to discover novel VEGFR-2 TK inhibitors, we have designed and synthesized three new series of pyridine-containing compounds. The new compounds were all screened against a panel of three cell lines (HepG-2, HCT-116, and MCF-7). Promising results encouraged us to additionally evaluate the most active members for their in vitro VEGFR-2 inhibitory effect. Compound 7a, which is the most potent candidate, revealed a significant increase in caspase-3 level by 7.80-fold when compared to the control. In addition, Bax and Bcl-2 concentration levels showed an increase in the proapoptotic protein Bax (261.4 Pg/ml) and a decrease of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 (1.25 Pg/ml) compared to the untreated cells. Furthermore, compound 7a arrested the cell cycle in the G2/M phase with induction of apoptosis. The immunomodulatory effect of compound 7a, the most active member, showed a reduction in TNF-α by 87%. Also, compound 7a caused a potent inhibitory effect on smooth muscle proliferation. Docking studies were also performed to get better insights into the possible binding mode of the target compounds with VEGFR-2 active sites.

Abstract
During pregnancy, maternal vitamin D insufficiency could increase the risk of preeclampsia. Aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and the occurrence of placenta-mediated complications (PMCs) in a population at high risk. A prospective multicenter cohort study of 200 pregnant patients was conducted. The vitamin D level of patients with placenta-mediated complications was lower at 32 weeks compared to uncomplicated pregnancies (P = 0.001). At 32 weeks, the risk of occurrence of PMCs was five times higher in patients with vitamin D deficiency (RR: 5.14 95% CI (1.50-17.55)) compared to patients with normal vitamin D levels. There was a strong, inverse relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels at 32 weeks and the subsequent risk of PMCs (P = 0.001). At 32 weeks, the vitamin D level of patients with late-onset PMCs was lower than the one of patients with early-onset PMCs and of patients without PMCs (P < 0.0001). These results suggest a role of vitamin D in the maintenance of placental performance and therefore in the prevention of the onset of late PMC.

Abstract
Vitamin D represents a group of secosteroids involved in the calcium and phosphate metabolism. The active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxylcalciferol, exerts its biological mechanisms via the VDR (vitamin D receptor) which acts as a regulator of several target genes. Hypovitaminosis D is associated with many diseases, which are not only limited to the metabolism of the skeleton, but growing evidence links the deficit of vitamin D to cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and neoplastic diseases. In regard to the cardiovascular system, current evidence shows the presence of VDR in endothelial cells. Moreover, both in vitro and animal experimental models demonstrated that the deficit of vitamin D can promote endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis development. Vitamin D can interfere with vascular functions also by affecting the production of vasodilator mediators. VDR is also expressed in left ventricle cardiomyocytes, and hypovitaminosis D can relate to cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) designed to prove the therapeutic role of vitamin D supplementation have been inconclusive to date. The aim of this review is to highlight the main interactions between vitamin D metabolism and cardiovascular diseases; thus, focusing on pathogenic mechanisms and related clinical manifestations.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the association of bone mineral biomarkers of calcium, phosphorus metabolism, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D with diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle and left ventricle mass in predialysis chronic kidney children. Patients and Methods. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 60 children with chronic kidney disease and treated by conservative treatment from October 2018 to September 2019 in the Pediatric Nephrology and Cardiology Department at our University Hospital. Results The most common causes of CKD were congenital renal anomalies accounted for 22 (36.67%) of the studied cases. The mean age of children was 7.05 ± 2.74 years, and 32 (53.33%) were males. The children who had a normal diastolic function were 32 (53.33%), while those who had diastolic dysfunction were 28 (46.67%). There was a statistically significant in serum phosphorus (p value = 0.03), serum PTH (p value = 0.002), and hypertension (p value = 0.03). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between LVMI and iPTH level (r = 0.89, p ≤ 0.0001), 25(OH) cholecalciferol (r = −0.27, p = 0.04), serum Ca (r = −0.37, p = 0.004), and serum phosphorus (r = −0.45, p = 0.0003). Conclusion Our results revealed that hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphatemia, and hypertension were significantly associated with diastolic dysfunction while hypovitaminosis D was not significantly associated. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent in all children with CKD. Biomarkers of mineral bone density were significantly associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and increased left ventricular mass index.

Abstract
For the first time in the Polish population, we aimed to investigate associations between the VDR gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) BsmI (rs15444410), ApaI (rs7975232), FokI (rs19735810), and TaqI (rs731236) and the development of preeclampsia (PE). A case-control study surveyed 122 preeclamptic and 184 normotensive pregnant women. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was performed to examine the maternal VDR FokI, BsmI, TaqI, and ApaI polymorphisms. The VDR BsmIAA homozygous genotype was statistically significantly more frequent in preeclamptic women compared to the control group (p = 0.0263), which was also associated with a 2-fold increased risk of PE (OR = 2.06, p = 0.012). A correlation between the VDR BsmI polymorphism with systolic and diastolic blood hypertension was noted. Furthermore, 3-marker haplotype CTA (TaqI/ApaI/BsmI) was associated with significantly higher systolic (p = 0.0075) and diastolic (p = 0.0072) blood pressure. Association and haplotype analysis indicated that the VDR BsmI A allele could play a significant role in the PE pathomechanism and hence could be a risk factor for PE development in pregnant Polish women. These results indicate the importance of the VDR BsmI polymorphism and reveal that this variant is closely associated with a higher predisposition to hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence is growing for a role of vitamin D in regulating skeletal muscle mass, strength and functional capacity. Given the role the kidneys play in activating total vitamin D, and the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), it is possible that deficiency contributes to the low levels of physical function and muscle mass in these patients. METHODS This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of previously published interventional study, with in vitro follow up work. 34 CKD patients at stages G3b-5 (eGFR 25.5 ± 8.3 mL/min/1.73m2; age 61 ± 12 years) were recruited, with a sub-group (n = 20) also donating a muscle biopsy. Vitamin D and associated metabolites were analysed in plasma by liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectroscopy and correlated to a range of physiological tests of muscle size, function, exercise capacity and body composition. The effects of 1α,25(OH)2D3 supplementation on myogenesis and myotube size was investigated in primary skeletal muscle cells from vitamin D deficient donors. RESULTS In vivo, there was no association between total or active vitamin D and muscle size or strength, but a significant correlation with V̇O2Peak was seen with total vitamin D (25OHD). in vitro, 1α,25(OH)2D3 supplementation reduced IL-6 mRNA expression, but had no effect upon proliferation, differentiation or myotube diameter. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency is not a prominent factor driving the loss of muscle mass in CKD, but may play a role in reduced exercise capacity.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the effects of oral vitamin D supplement therapy on clinical outcomes of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injections in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). Methods Seventy-one patients with center-involving DME received IVB injections three times monthly. Cases with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels <30 ng/ml were divided into treatment and control groups. The treatment group received 50000 IU of oral vitamin D once a week for eight weeks. One month after the third IVB injection, changes in the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) were analyzed for each group. Results Thirty-seven patients had sufficient levels of 25 (OH) D, while 34 patients had insufficient levels. Nineteen cases with deficient levels of 25(OH)D were treated with oral vitamin D, while 15 patients were assigned to the control group. The mean of serum 25(OH)D in patients was 27.9 ng/ml [mean 20.3 ± 5.4 and 17.3 ± 5.4 ng/ml in control and treatment groups, respectively (P = 0.231)]. After three IVB injections, BCVA improved significantly in each group, but the difference between the study groups was not statistically significant. CMT decreased significantly in all the groups. The mean CMT reduction was more prominent in the vitamin D-treated group, but the difference between groups did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.29). Conclusion In DME patients with vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D supplement therapy had some beneficial effects on CMT reduction following three injections of IVB; nevertheless, these effects were not statistically significant. Definite conclusion needs further prospective studies with a larger sample size.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our aim was to assess whether serum vitamin D deficiency before gestational 20 weeks was associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia. METHODS We investigated the serum levels of 25(OH)D before gestational 20 weeks, and analyzed associations between the 25(OH)D and the risk of preeclampsia. 7976 pregnant women were enrolled in this study between January 2017 and July 2019 at the Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University. Adjusted smoothing spline plots, subgroup analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the relative risk between 25(OH)D and preeclampsia. RESULTS After fully adjusting the confounding factors, serum vitamin D is a protective factor in preeclampsia (OR = 0.85, P = 0.04). Compared with adequate vitamin D, vitamin D deficiency (OR = 1.55, P = 0.031), deficiency (OR = 1.50, P = 0.049) and severe deficiency (OR = 2.6, P = 0.005) are independent of preeclampsia in pregnant women Risk factors. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency before gestational 20 weeks is a risk factor for preeclampsia.

Abstract
Background: Coronary collateral circulation (CCC) plays a vital role in the myocardial blood supply, especially forischemic myocardium. Evidence suggests that the visfatin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] levels are related to the degree and incidence of vascular stenosis associated with coronary artery disease; however, few studies have evaluated the effect of visfatin and 25(OH)D3 on CCC development in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO).This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the serum visfatin and 25(OH)D3 levels and CCC in patients with CTO.Methods: A total of 189 patients with CTO confirmed by coronary angiography were included. CCC was graded from 0 to 3 according to the Rentrop-Cohen classification. Patients with grade 0 or grade 1 collateral development were included in the poor CCC group (n = 82), whereas patients with grade 2 or grade 3 collateral development were included in the good CCC group (n = 107). The serum visfatin and 25(OH)D3 levels were measured by ELISA.Results: The visfatin level was significantly higher in the poor CCC group than in the good CCC group, and the 25(OH)D3 level was significantly lower in the poor CCC group than in the good CCC group (P = 0.000). Correlation analysis showed that the Rentrop grade was negatively correlated with the visfatin level (r = − 0.692, P = 0.000) but positively correlated with the 25(OH)D3 level (r = 0.635, P = 0.000). Logistic regression analysis showed that the visfatin and 25(OH)D3 levels were independent risk factors for CCC (odds ratio 1.597, 95% confidence interval 1.300–1.961, P = 0.000 and odds ratio 0.566, 95% confidence interval 0.444–0.722, P = 0.000, respectively). The visfatin and25(OH)D3 levels can effectively predict the CCC status.Conclusion: Serum visfatin and 25(OH)D3 levels are related to CCC development and are independent predictors of poor CCC.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate protective effects of dexmedetomidine, calcitriol and their
combination. Methods: Forty Wistar-albino rats were divided into 4 groups; group of Sham (Group
Sham); group of dexmedetomidine (Group DEX); group of calcitriol (Group CAL)
and group of dexmedetomidineandcalcitriol (Group DEX-CAL). Photographic
analysis was used for macroscopic analysis and perfusion analyses were
evaluated by scintigraphy. Additionally, tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and
total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant activity (TAS) were
recorded and oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. Each flap was
assessed by histopathology. Results: Compared to Group Sham, the viable flap areas were higher in all treatment
groups both by photographic image analyses and perfusion analyses
(p<0.05). Group DEX-CAL had the highest viable flap percentage both in
scintigraphic and photographic analyses; whereas Group Sham had the lowest
viable flap percentage. Similarly, TAS and MDA levels were elevated and TOS
levels were declined in all treatment groups compared to Group Sham
(p<0.005). Histopathological analysis at flap demarcation zone confirmed
neovascularization was significantly higher and edema, necrosis and
inflammation were significantly lower in all treatment groups compared to
Group Sham. Conclusion: The outcomes show that additional premedication with either dexmedetomidine
or calcitriol or their combination reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury of
flap area and show significant increase in the percentage of viable flap
tissue.

Abstract
Hemodynamic forces have an important role in venous intimal hyperplasia, which is the main cause of arteriovenous fistula dysfunction. Endothelial cells (ECs) constantly exposed to the shear stress of blood flow, converted the mechanical stimuli into intracellular signals, and interacted with the underlying vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Caveolin-1 is one of the important mechanoreceptors on cytomembrane, which is related to vascular abnormalities. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) pathway is involved in the process of VSMCs proliferation and migration. In the present study, we explore the effects of Caveolin-1-ERK1/2 pathway and uremia toxins on the endothelial cells and VSMCs following shear stress application. Different shear stress was simulated with a ECs/VSMCs cocultured parallel-plate flow chamber system. Low shear stress and oscillating shear stress up-regulated the expression of fibroblast growth factor-4, platelet-derived growth factor-BB, vascular endothelial growth factor-A, ERK1/2 phosphorylation in endothelial cells, and proliferation and migration of VSMCs but down-regulated the Caveolin-1 expression in endothelial cells. Uremia toxin induces the proliferation and migration of VSMCs but not in a Caveolin-1-dependent manner in the static environment. Low shear stress-induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs is inhibited by Caveolin-1 overexpression and ERK1/2 suppression. Shear stress-regulated VSMC proliferation and migration is an endothelial cells-dependent process. Low shear stress and oscillating shear stress exert atherosclerotic influences on endothelial cells and VSMCs. Low shear stress modulated proliferation and migration of VSMCs through Caveolin-1-ERK1/2 pathway, which suggested that Caveolin-1 and ERK1/2 can be used as a new therapeutic target for the treatment of arteriovenous fistula dysfunction.Impact statementVenous intimal hyperplasia is the leading cause of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) dysfunction. This article reports that shear stress-regulated vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) proliferation and migration is an endothelial cell (EC)-dependent process. Low shear stress (LSS) and oscillating shear stress (OSS) exert atherosclerotic influences on the ECs and VSMCs. LSS-induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs is inhibited by Caveolin-1 overexpression and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) suppression, which suggested that Caveolin-1 and ERK1/2 can be used as a new therapeutic target for the treatment of AVF dysfunction.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality seen even in the early stages of CKD. Several studies have shown a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in individuals with CKD. Low vitamin D levels upregulate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), cause endothelial dysfunction, and increase inflammation. Epidemiological studies show an association between vitamin D deficiency and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but a causal relationship has not been established. The high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with CKD in adults requires therapies to decrease this elevated risk. However, results from several meta-analyses and randomized clinical trials in adults have not shown convincing evidence for the use of vitamin D therapy in improving cardiovascular outcomes. Lack of high-quality evidence from randomized clinical trials in children regarding the effectiveness and long-term safety of vitamin D treatment precludes any recommendations on its use to mitigate the cardiovascular burden of CKD.

Abstract
Vascular calcification (VC) is common in chronic kidney disease, increases in prevalence as patients progress to end-stage renal disease, and is significantly associated with mortality. VC is a complex and highly regulated process similar to bone formation whereby hydroxyapatite crystals deposit in the intimal or medial layer of arteries. Mineral bone abnormalities are common in chronic kidney disease; reduction in glomerular filtration rate and changes in vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and fibroblast growth factor 23 result in the dysregulation of phosphorus and calcium metabolism. Cell culture studies, animal models, and observational and clinical studies all suggest this abnormal mineral metabolism plays a role in the initiation and progression of VC in kidney disease. This review will focus on these mineral bone abnormalities and how they may contribute to mechanisms that induce VC in kidney disease.

Abstract
Atherosclerotic occlusive diseases and aneurysms that affect large and medium-sized arteries outside the cardiac and cerebral circulation are collectively known as peripheral arterial disease (PAD). With a rise in the rate of aging population worldwide, the number of people diagnosed with PAD is rapidly increasing. The micronutrient vitamin D is an important steroid hormone that acts on many crucial cellular mechanisms. Experimental studies suggest that optimal levels of vitamin D have beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels; however, high vitamin D concentrations have been implicated in promoting vascular calcification and arterial stiffness. Observations from various clinical studies shows that deficiency of vitamin D has been associated with a greater risk of PAD. Epidemiological studies have often reported an inverse relation between circulating vitamin D status measured in terms of 25-hydroxivitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and increased cardiovascular disease risk; however, randomized controlled trials did not show a consistent positive effect of vitamin D supplementation on cardiovascular disease risk or events. Even though PAD shares all the major risk factors with cardiovascular diseases, the effect of vitamin D deficiency in PAD is not clear. Current evidence suggests a strong role of vitamin D in promoting genomic and epigenomic changes. This review summarises the current literature that supports the notion that vitamin D deficiency may promote PAD formation. A better understanding of underlying pathological mechanisms will open up new therapeutic possibilities which is the main unmet need in PAD management. Furthermore, epigenetic evidence shows that a more holistic approach towards PAD prevention that incorporates a healthy lifestyle, adequate exercise and optimal nutrition may be more effective in protecting the genome and maintaining a healthy vasculature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased risk for preeclampsia. Despite this, the current evidence regarding the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in preventing preeclampsia is controversial. To assess the impact of vitamin D supplementation on the risk of preeclampsia, we performed a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis of the available randomized clinical trials (RCTs). METHODS The primary outcome was preeclampsia. Subgroup analyses were carried out considering the timing of the supplementation, type of intervention and the study design. Meta-regression analysis, including the amount of vitamin D and maternal age, were planned to explore heterogeneity (PROSPERO database registration number: CRD42019119207). RESULTS Data were pooled from 27 RCTs comprising 59 arms, which included overall 4777 participants, of whom 2487 were in the vitamin D-treated arm and 2290 in the control arm. Vitamin D administration in pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia (odd ratio [OR] 0.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.26, 0.52; I2 = 0%). If the vitamin D supplementation was started up to 20 weeks' gestation, the odds was a little lower (OR 0.35, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.50, p < 0.001). The effect was largely independent of the supplementation cessation (until delivery or not), type of intervention (vitamin D alone or in association with calcium), and study design. Increasing dose of vitamin D was associated with reduced incidence of preeclampsia (slope of log OR: -1.1, 95% CI: -1.73, -0.46; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that vitamin D supplementation may be useful in preventing preeclampsia. These data are especially useful for health-care providers who engage in the management of pregnant women at risk for preeclampsia. Our findings are a call for action to definitively address vitamin D supplementation as a possible intervention strategy in preventing preeclampsia in pregnancy.

Abstract
Long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been indicated for the regulatory roles in cardiovascular diseases. This study determined the expression of lncRNA TNK2 antisense RNA 1 (TNK2‐AS1) in oxidized low‐density lipoprotein (ox‐LDL)‐stimulated human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) and examined the mechanistic role of TNK2‐AS1 in the proliferation and migration of HASMCs. Our results demonstrated that ox‐LDL promoted HASMC proliferation and migration, and the enhanced proliferation and migration in ox‐LDL‐treated HASMCs were accompanied by the up‐regulation of TNK2‐AS1. In vitro functional studies showed that TNK2‐AS1 knockdown suppressed cell proliferation and migration of ox‐LDL‐stimulated HASMCs, while TNK2‐AS1 overexpression enhanced HASMC proliferation and migration. Additionally, TNK2‐AS1 inversely regulated miR‐150‐5p expression via acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), and the enhanced effects of TNK2‐AS1 overexpression on HASMC proliferation and migration were attenuated by miR‐150‐5p overexpression. Moreover, miR‐150‐5p could target the 3’ untranslated regions of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) to regulate FGF1 and VEGFA expression in HASMCs, and the inhibitory effects of miR‐150‐5p overexpression in ox‐LDL‐stimulated HASMCs were attenuated by enforced expression of VEGFA and FGF1. Enforced expression of VEGFA and FGF1 also partially restored the suppressed cell proliferation and migration induced by TNK2‐AS1 knockdown in ox‐LDL‐stimulated HASMCs, while the enhanced effects of TNK2‐AS1 overexpression on HASMC proliferation and migration were attenuated by the knockdown of VEGFA and FGF1. Collectively, our findings showed that TNK2‐AS1 exerted its action in ox‐LDL‐stimulated HASMCs via regulating VEGFA and FGF1 expression by acting as a ceRNA for miR‐150‐5p.

Abstract
Background Neointimal hyperplasia and its related arterial stiffness are the crucial pathophysiological features in atherosclerosis and in-stent restenosis. Cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147), a member of the immunoglobulin super family that induces the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) by dimerization, may play important roles in neointimal hyperplasia and may therefore be an effective target for the treatment of this condition. Here, we investigated whether a novel CD147 inhibitor SP-8356 ((1S,5R)-4-(3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxystyryl)-6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-3-en-2-one) reduces neointimal hyperplasia and arterial stiffness in a rat model of partial carotid artery ligation. Methods Neointimal hyperplasia was induced in Sprague–Dawley rats by partial ligation of the right carotid artery combined with a high fat diet and vitamin D injection. Rats were subdivided into vehicle, SP-8356 (50 mg/kg), and rosuvastatin (10 mg/kg) groups. The drugs were administrated via intraperitoneal injections for 4 weeks. The elasticity of blood vessels was assessed by measuring pulse wave velocity using Doppler ultrasonography before sacrifice. Histomolecular analysis was carried out on harvested carotid arteries. Results SP-8356 significantly reduced MMP activity by inhibiting CD147 dimerization. SP-8356 reduced neointimal hyperplasia and prevented the deterioration of vascular elasticity. SP-8356 had a greater inhibitory effect on neointimal hyperplasia than did rosuvastatin. Furthermore, rosuvastatin did not improve vascular elasticity. SP-8356 increased the expression of smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC), but decreased the expression of collagen type III and MMP-9 in the neointimal region. In contrast to SP-8356, rosuvastatin did not alter the expression of SM-MHC or MMP-9. Conclusions The ability of SP-8356 to reduce neointimal hyperplasia and improve arterial stiffness in affected carotid artery suggests that SP-8356 could be a promising therapeutic drug for vascular remodeling disorders involving neointimal hyperplasia and arterial stiffness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy may be needed to protect against adverse pregnancy outcomes. This is an update of a review that was first published in 2012 and then in 2016. OBJECTIVES To examine whether vitamin D supplementation alone or in combination with calcium or other vitamins and minerals given to women during pregnancy can safely improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. SEARCH METHODS For this update, we searched Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth's Trials Register (12 July 2018), contacted relevant organisations (15 May 2018), reference lists of retrieved trials and registries at clinicaltrials.gov and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (12 July 2018). Abstracts were included if they had enough information to extract the data. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised and quasi-randomised trials evaluating the effect of supplementation with vitamin D alone or in combination with other micronutrients for women during pregnancy in comparison to placebo or no intervention. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently i) assessed the eligibility of trials against the inclusion criteria, ii) extracted data from included trials, and iii) assessed the risk of bias of the included trials. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. MAIN RESULTS We included 30 trials (7033 women), excluded 60 trials, identified six as ongoing/unpublished trials and two trials are awaiting assessments.Supplementation with vitamin D alone versus placebo/no interventionA total of 22 trials involving 3725 pregnant women were included in this comparison; 19 trials were assessed as having low-to-moderate risk of bias for most domains and three trials were assessed as having high risk of bias for most domains. Supplementation with vitamin D alone during pregnancy probably reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia (risk ratio (RR) 0.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30 to 0.79; 4 trials, 499 women, moderate-certainty evidence) and gestational diabetes (RR 0.51, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.97; 4 trials, 446 women, moderate-certainty evidence); and probably reduces the risk of having a baby with low birthweight (less than 2500 g) (RR 0.55, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.87; 5 trials, 697 women, moderate-certainty evidence) compared to women who received placebo or no intervention. Vitamin D supplementation may make little or no difference in the risk of having a preterm birth < 37 weeks compared to no intervention or placebo (RR 0.66, 95% CI 0.34 to 1.30; 7 trials, 1640 women, low-certainty evidence). In terms of maternal adverse events, vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk of severe postpartum haemorrhage (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.51 to 0.91; 1 trial, 1134 women, low-certainty evidence). There were no cases of hypercalcaemia (1 trial, 1134 women, low-certainty evidence), and we are very uncertain as to whether vitamin D increases or decreases the risk of nephritic syndrome (RR 0.17, 95% CI 0.01 to 4.06; 1 trial, 135 women, very low-certainty evidence). However, given the scarcity of data in general for maternal adverse events, no firm conclusions can be drawn.Supplementation with vitamin D and calcium versus placebo/no interventionNine trials involving 1916 pregnant women were included in this comparison; three trials were assessed as having low risk of bias for allocation and blinding, four trials were assessed as having high risk of bias and two had some components having a low risk, high risk, or unclear risk. Supplementation with vitamin D and calcium during pregnancy probably reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia (RR 0.50, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.78; 4 trials, 1174 women, moderate-certainty evidence). The effect of the intervention is uncertain on gestational diabetes (RR 0.33,% CI 0.01 to 7.84; 1 trial, 54 women, very low-certainty evidence); and low birthweight (less than 2500 g) (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.10 to 4.55; 2 trials, 110 women, very low-certainty evidence) compared to women who received placebo or no intervention. Supplementation with vitamin D and calcium during pregnancy may increase the risk of preterm birth < 37 weeks in comparison to women who received placebo or no intervention (RR 1.52, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.28; 5 trials, 942 women, low-certainty evidence). No trial in this comparison reported on maternal adverse events.Supplementation with vitamin D + calcium + other vitamins and minerals versus calcium + other vitamins and minerals (but no vitamin D)One trial in 1300 participants was included in this comparison; it was assessed as having low risk of bias. Pre-eclampsia was not assessed. Supplementation with vitamin D + other nutrients may make little or no difference in the risk of preterm birth < 37 weeks (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.68 to 1.59; 1 trial, 1298 women, low-certainty evidence); or low birthweight (less than 2500 g) (RR 1.12, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.51; 1 trial, 1298 women, low-certainty evidence). It is unclear whether it makes any difference to the risk of gestational diabetes (RR 0.42, 95% CI 0.10 to 1.73) or maternal adverse events (hypercalcaemia no events; hypercalciuria RR 0.25, 95% CI 0.02 to 3.97; 1 trial, 1298 women,) because the certainty of the evidence for both outcomes was found to be very low. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We included 30 trials (7033 women) across three separate comparisons. Our GRADE assessments ranged from moderate to very low, with downgrading decisions based on limitations in study design, imprecision and indirectness.Supplementing pregnant women with vitamin D alone probably reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, low birthweight and may reduce the risk of severe postpartum haemorrhage. It may make little or no difference in the risk of having a preterm birth < 37 weeks' gestation. Supplementing pregnant women with vitamin D and calcium probably reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia but may increase the risk of preterm births < 37 weeks (these findings warrant further research). Supplementing pregnant women with vitamin D and other nutrients may make little or no difference in the risk of preterm birth < 37 weeks' gestation or low birthweight (less than 2500 g). Additional rigorous high quality and larger randomised trials are required to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy, particularly in relation to the risk of maternal adverse events.

Abstract
Endometriosis is an extremely heterogeneous disease and affects about ten percent of the female population during their reproductive years. Recent studies showed that endometriosis is an angiogenesis-dependent disease. Peritoneal macrophages are a well-characterised source of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The aim of this study was to determine the VEGF gene expression and production in peritoneal macrophages of patients with endometriosis under the effects of vitamins C and E in comparison with control. The lab trial study carried out on 50 patients undergoing laparoscopy and peritoneal fluid samples were collected from them. We compared the VEGF gene expression and production in peritoneal macrophages among groups by using real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods, respectively. Our results showed that gene expressions influenced by vitamin C increased in different concentrations and incubation times, except for the incubation time after 48 h. In the case of vitamin E, this was evident with the exception of vitamin E 50 μM after 24 h and vitamin E 100 μM after 48 h. Our findings indicated that vitamin C and E in different concentrations and incubation times altered VEGF gene expression in the peritoneal macrophages but they had not affected on VEGF productions. Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Previous studies showed that antioxidants play a key role in the inhibition of oxidative stress-induced damages and the reduction of pelvic pain in patients with endometriosis. Vitamin E and vitamin C are the main components in neutralising free radicals. Also, antioxidant consumption such as vitamin C and vitamin E in women with endometriosis showed an inverse correlation between antioxidant intake and endometriosis pathology. What do the results of this study add? Vitamin C and E in different concentrations and times of incubation altered vascular endothelial growth factor gene expression and production in peritoneal macrophages. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Further studies are needed to determine the effects of C and E vitamins in different concentrations on vascular endothelial growth factor gene expression and production in peritoneal macrophages and the possible roles of these vitamins in treating endometriosis.

Abstract
Arterial calcification predicts accelerated restenosis after angioplasty and stenting. We studied the effects of calcification on neointimal hyperplasia after balloon injury in the rat carotid. Arterial calcification was induced by subcutaneous injection of vitamin D3 or by adventitial application of calcium chloride. After balloon catheter injury, neointimal hyperplasia was significantly increased in rats with medial calcification compared with controls. Neointimal cell proliferation in calcified arteries as assessed by proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) staining was also higher. In calcified arteries, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2)levels were increased at the time of injury suggesting a possible explanation for the altered responses. In vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) grown under calcifying conditions , stimulation with BMP-2 significantly increased cell proliferation, however, this did not occur in those grown under non-calcifying conditions. These data suggest that neointimal hyperplasia is accelerated in calcified arteries and that this may be due in part to increased BMP-2 expression in medial SMCs. Treatments aimed at inhibiting restenosis in calcified arteries may differ from those that work in uncalcified vessels.

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that the active form of vitamin D (calcitriol; 1,25(OH)2D3) is a potent inhibitor of retinal neovascularization. However, the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved remained poorly understood. Perivascular supporting cells including pericytes (PC) play important roles during angiogenesis, vascular maturation, and stabilization of blood vessels. How 1,25(OH)2D3 affects retinal PC proliferation and migration, and whether these effects are mediated through vitamin D receptor (VDR), are unknown. Here, we determined the impact of 1,25(OH)2D3 on retinal PC prepared from wild‐type (Vdr+/+) and VDR‐deficient (Vdr−/−) mice. Retinal PC expressed significantly higher VDR levels compared to retinal endothelial cells (EC). Unlike retinal EC, 1,25(OH)2D3 significantly decreased PC proliferation and migration and resulted in a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest. Although 1,25(OH)2D3 did not inhibit the proliferation of Vdr−/− PC, it did inhibit their migration. PC adhesion to various extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and ECM production were also affected by incubation of PC with 1,25(OH)2D3. Vdr−/− PC were more adherent compared with Vdr+/+ cells. Mechanistically, incubation of Vdr+/+ PC with 1,25(OH)2D3 resulted in an increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and attenuation of signaling through VEGF‐R2 and platelet‐derived growth factor receptor‐beta. Incubation with soluble VEGF‐R1 (sFlt‐1) partially reversed the effect of VEGF on Vdr+/+ PC. In addition, incubation of Vdr+/+ PC with VEGF or inhibition of VEGF‐R2 increased VDR expression. Together, these results suggest an important role for retinal PC as a target for vitamin D and VDR action for attenuation of angiogenesis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare serum and aqueous humor (AH) vitamin D levels between the patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) and controls. METHODS A total of 65 subjects (30 DME, 35 control) were included. One-third of the control group had hypertension, dyslipidemia, or diabetes mellitus without diabetic retinopathy as underlying diseases. Serum and AH levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured in each subject. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate factors associated with serum and AH vitamin D levels. RESULTS There were no significant differences in serum vitamin D levels between the DME (14.3 ± 9.1 ng/mL) and control (16.2 ± 8.0 ng/mL) groups (P = 0.374). However, eyes with DME (41.6 ± 8.0 ng/mL) had a higher AH level of vitamin D than control eyes (25.5 ± 4.1 ng/mL, P < 0.001). AH vitamin D level was significantly associated with the presence of DME (β = 0.775, P < 0.001). Serum and AH levels of vitamin D were not significantly correlated (r = - 0.157, P = 0.211). CONCLUSION Serum vitamin D levels did not significantly differ between the DME and control groups. Localized vitamin D level in the eye was independent from systemic vitamin D level and it might be another indicator of DME severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis (AS) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. microRNAs play a key role in gene regulation in the formation and development of atherosclerotic plaques. Herein, the role and target gene of miR-185 in AS were explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cell viability, migration and invasion were examined by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and transwell assay. The relative luciferase activity was measured by luciferase reporter assay. The levels of miR-185, STIM1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloprotein-9 (MMP-9) were evaluated by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot. RESULTS The results revealed that ox-LDL decreased miR-185 expression, and enhanced STIM1 expression in MOVAS cells, as well promoted cell viability, migration and invasion. 3'-UTR of STIM1 contained miR-185 binding site according to the Targetscan. miR-185 silencing or STIM1 overexpression promoted the viability, migration and invasion of ox-LDL-induced MOVAS cells. miR-185 overexpression or STIM1 silencing had the opposite effect. Besides, miR-185 silencing up-regulated the levels of VEGF and MMP-9 in vitro, and increased the lesions of arterial wall tissues and STIM1 positive rate in vivo. However, STIM1 silencing reversed these effects. CONCLUSIONS Sum up, STIM1 was a potential target gene of miR-185 in AS. Knockdown of miR-185 facilitated the progression of AS through enhancing cell proliferation, migration and invasion via targeting STIM1. The research provides a novel view of miR-185/STIM1 axis function in AS development, and this targeting method may prevent and treat AS.

Abstract
Low vitamin D (VitD) status is common among newborn infants, more so in temperate latitudes with evidence that maternal VitD deficiency is a major risk factor given that the neonate relies solely on maternal-fetal transfer of VitD. This scoping review was conducted to provide an overview of the latest evidence from studies regarding the impact of maternal risk factors on infant 25-hydryoxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations with a focus on studies in Canada and the United States. Several maternal risk factors that contribute to low maternal-fetal 25(OH)D concentrations have been reported over many decades, but no clear pattern has been established for multiethnic populations. For example, darker skin pigmentation and ethnicity are common risk factors for low VitD status. Studies in predominantly white women showed that supplementation of VitD during pregnancy causes significant increases in maternal serum 25(OH)D which often improves cord serum 25(OH)D values. In addition, VitD recommendations by health care professionals and adherence to supplementation by pregnant women appear to positively influence maternal and infant 25(OH)D concentrations. Conversely, winter season, obesity, lower socioeconomic status including lifestyle factors (smoking), and use of medication pose risk for lower maternal-fetal transfer of VitD. However, there is still a dearth of pertinent data on the relationship between some of the maternal risk factors and newborn 25(OH)D concentrations, for instance, relationships between gestational diabetes and neonatal VitD status. Additional research is required to determine if the same target for 25(OH)D concentrations applies for pregnant women, neonates, and infants.
