The Modulation of Electrokinetic Streaming Potentials of Silicon-Based Surfaces through Plasma-Based Surface Processing

A new plasma processing-based methodology for enhancing the streaming potential (V_s) that may be obtained in electrokinetic flows for a given pressure gradient over a silicon surface-based microchannel is indicated. The dependence of the V_s on both the surface zeta potential and the electrolyte slip length was carefully determined through a series of experiments involving the variation of CF₄- and Ar-based plasma parameters, incorporating pressure, exposure time, and power. It was determined through analytical estimates that, while the zeta potential is always increased, the slip length may be diminished under certain conditions. A record value of ∼0.1 mV/Pa was obtained using CF₄ plasma at 500 W, 10 mTorr, and 300 s of exposure. The implications of the work extend to the investigation of whether smooth surfaces may be effective for generating large V_s's for new modalities of electrical voltage sources in microfluidics-based applications.

A Review on the Production Methods and Applications of Graphene-Based Materials

Graphene-based materials in the form of fibres, fabrics, films, and composite materials are the most widely investigated research domains because of their remarkable physicochemical and thermomechanical properties. In this era of scientific advancement, graphene has built the foundation of a new horizon of possibilities and received tremendous research focus in several application areas such as aerospace, energy, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, wastewater management, and wearable technology. Although graphene has been found to provide exceptional results in every application field, a massive proportion of research is still underway to configure required parameters to ensure the best possible outcomes from graphene-based materials. Until now, several review articles have been published to summarise the excellence of graphene and its derivatives, which focused mainly on a single application area of graphene. However, no single review is found to comprehensively study most used fabrication processes of graphene-based materials including their diversified and potential application areas. To address this genuine gap and ensure wider support for the upcoming research and investigations of this excellent material, this review aims to provide a snapshot of most used fabrication methods of graphene-based materials in the form of pure and composite fibres, graphene-based composite materials conjugated with polymers, and fibres. This study also provides a clear perspective of large-scale production feasibility and application areas of graphene-based materials in all forms.

One-Step Versatile Fabrication of Superhydrophilic Filters for the Efficient Purification of Oily Water

As industrial oily wastewater can seriously damage ecosystems, the use of filtration technology with functional filters has emerged as an effective approach for purifying oily wastewater and protecting the environment. Although several methods for preparing functional filters with specific wettability have been reported, most methods are complicated, expensive, and time-consuming. Furthermore, these methods are only applicable to specific substrates, which hinder their practical applications. Here, a simple and versatile method for the fabrication of a superhydrophilic filter on any substrate using a one-step dipping process is reported. The method is easily scaled-up to fabricate large-area superhydrophilic filters; moreover, mass production is possible using a roll-to-roll process. The resulting filter is durable, stable, and, due to its stable hydrophilic layer, shows no deterioration in wetting behavior; it also exhibits self-cleaning properties. Based on its selective wetting characteristics, oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants can be purified in a highly efficient manner. Importantly, owing to its self-cleaning properties, the filter can be reused after simply immersing and washing in water. This easy, cost-effective, fast, and versatile method for fabricating superhydrophilic filters can be practically applied in industries that need to purify oily water.

Possibility of Obtaining Two Orders of Magnitude Larger Electrokinetic Streaming Potentials, through Liquid Infiltrated Surfaces

It is shown that the magnitude of the streaming potential (V_s) can be significantly enhanced from ∼0.02 V to as much as ∼1.6 V, in electrokinetic flows through microchannels. This was done through flows on liquid-filled surfaces, where the grooves were filled with oils of viscosity in the range 30-3000 mPa·s. The presence of immiscible oils and the improved slip are both factors that could significantly increase the V_s. The analytical relationship between streaming potential and filled liquid viscosity was derived and verified through corresponding experimental results. The work yields novel insights into complex electrolyte flows and indicates avenues for more efficient energy harvesting.

High-Throughput Stamping of Hybrid Functional Surfaces

Hydrophobic-hydrophilic hybrid surfaces, sometimes termed biphilic surfaces, have shown potential to enhance condensation and boiling heat transfer, anti-icing, and fog harvesting performance. However, state of art techniques to develop these surfaces have limited substrate selection, poor scalability, and lengthy and costly fabrication methods. Here, we develop a simple, scalable, and rapid stamping technique for hybrid surfaces with spatially controlled wettability. To enable stamping, rationally designed and prefabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamps, which are reusable and independent of the substrate and functional coating, were used. To demonstrate the stamping technique, we used silicon wafer, copper, and aluminum substrates functionalized with a variety of hydrophobic chemistries including heptadecafluorodecyltrimethoxy-silane, octafluorocyclobutane, and slippery omniphobic covalently attached liquids. Condensation experiments and microgoniometric characterization demonstrated that the stamped surfaces have global hydrophobicity or superhydrophobicity with localized hydrophilicity (spots) enabled by local removal of the functional coating during stamping. Stamped surfaces with superhydrophobic backgrounds and hydrophilic spots demonstrated stable coalescence induced droplet jumping. Compared to conventional techniques, our stamping method has comparable prototyping cost with reduced manufacturing time scale and cost. Our work not only presents design guidelines for the development of scalable hybrid surfaces for the study of phase change phenomena, it develops a scalable and rapid stamping protocol for the cost-effective manufacture of next-generation hybrid wettability surfaces.

Effect of Dispersion by Three-Roll Milling on Electrical Properties and Filler Length of Carbon Nanotube Composites

For practical use of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites, especially in electronic applications, uniform dispersion of a high concentration of CNTs in a polymer matrix is a critical challenge. Three-roll milling is one of most reliable dispersion techniques. We investigate the effect of three-roll milling time on CNT length and the electrical properties of a CNT/polydimethylsiloxane composite film with 10 wt% CNTs. During the milling process, the CNT length is decreased from 10 to 1-4 μm by mechanical shear forces. The electrical conductivity increases after 1.5 min of milling owing to dispersion of the CNTs but decreases with increasing milling time owing to the decrease in the CNT length. Considering the changes in the electrical conductivity of the CNT composite and CNT length, we determined how to optimize the three-roll milling time to obtain a suitable dispersion state.

Modulation of the Streaming Potential and Slip Characteristics in Electrolyte Flow over Liquid-Filled Surfaces

A significant enhancement in the streaming potential ( V_s) was obtained in experiments considering the flow of electrolyte over liquid-filled surfaces (LFSs), where the grooves in patterned substrates are filled with electrolyte immiscible oils. Such LFSs yield larger V_s (by a factor of 1.5) compared to superhydrophobic surfaces, with air-filled grooves, and offer tunability of electrokinetic flow. It is shown that the density, viscosity, conductivity, as well as the dielectric constant of the filling oil, in the LFS, determine V_s. Relating a hydrodynamic slip length to the obtained V_s offers insight into flow characteristics, as modulated by the liquid interfaces in the LFS.

Enhanced voltage generation through electrolyte flow on liquid-filled surfaces

The generation of electrical voltage through the flow of an electrolyte over a charged surface may be used for energy transduction. Here, we show that enhanced electrical potential differences (i.e., streaming potential) may be obtained through the flow of salt water on liquid-filled surfaces that are infiltrated with a lower dielectric constant liquid, such as oil, to harness electrolyte slip and associated surface charge. A record-high figure of merit, in terms of the voltage generated per unit applied pressure, of 0.043 mV Pa⁻¹ is obtained through the use of the liquid-filled surfaces. In comparison with air-filled surfaces, the figure of merit associated with the liquid-filled surface increases by a factor of 1.4. These results lay the basis for innovative surface charge engineering methodology for the study of electrokinetic phenomena at the microscale, with possible application in new electrical power sources.

Superhydrophobic surfaces are expected to increase streaming potential, but are hindered by the presence of air. Here the authors enhance streaming potential by flowing high-dielectric salt water over liquid-filled surfaces infiltrated with low-dielectric liquid, harnessing electric slip and surface charge.

Study on the Sensing Signal Profiles for Determination of Process Window of Flexible Sensors Based on Surface Treated PDMS/CNT Composite Patches

In this study, analysis of sensing signal profiles was conducted focusing on the close relationship between electrical conductivity and signal intensity in surface treated poly(dimethylsiloxane)/carbon nanotube (PDMS/CNT) composite patches for the purpose of their practical application as flexible chemical sensors. The flexible PDMS/CNT composite patches were prepared from a PDMS/CNT mixture with a two-roll apparatus. It was found that the PDMS/CNT pads showed a high electrical conductivity (10⁻¹ S/m) even at low CNT loading (0.6 wt %) and a contact angle range of 105–118°. The surface of the obtained PDMS/CNT composite patches was treated using a simple bio-conjugation method to incorporate beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) molecules onto the surface as a sensing medium, in order to detect a model compound (Methyl Paraben, MePRB). FT-IR spectra indicated that beta-cyclodextrin molecules were effectively introduced on the surface of the PDMS/CNT patches. It was shown that the sensor signal intensity was substantially dependent on the base current value, which increased with increasing CNT loading. Accordingly, the base current value was intimately associated with the electrical conductivity of the composite patches. On the other hand, the increase in current over the base current (ΔI/I₀) obtained after the addition of the model compound was inversely proportional to the CNT content. In this way, analysis on the sensing signal profiles of the flexible chemical sensor system was conducted to determine a process window. This study is a very useful springboard for future research activities, as more profound studies are necessary to fully understand sensing signal profiles.

Structure-Property Relationships of Nanosheeted 3D Hierarchical Roughness MgAl-Layered Double Hydroxide Branched to an Electrospun Porous Nanomembrane: A Superior Oil-Removing Nanofabric

A straightforward approach was successfully developed to fabricate a well-designed three-dimensional rough sheetlike MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) array to stand vertically on poly(acrylonitrile) porous nanofibrous membranes based on an electrospun-nanofiber-templated in situ hydrothermal strategy, and then the surface was modified with cyclohexanecarboxylic acid. The as-spun highly dense ordered sheetlike LDH porous nanofabric exhibited a superior durability in superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, which has achieved high oil-removing capability including both oil harvesting and oil separation to harvest/separate a wide range of organic solvents and oils from an oil-water mixture and, especially, exhibited a very good recycling and reusing performance. Interestingly, a steady water repellency was obtained against both drinkable hot (about 95 °C) and cool water. Outstanding oil harvesting, oil separation, and highly durable water repellant can be attributed to an effective synergistic effect between the high-density roughness of LDH nanosheets modified with acid and the very high porosity in the electrospun nanofibers, as well as the interspace between LDH nanosheets that acted as both a textile for selective oil separation and a container for penetrated oil storage, leading to special wettability, making the as-spun nanofabric a promising textile for large-scale removal and recollection of hydrophobic spillage on the water surface.

Internal and External Flow over Laser-Textured Superhydrophobic Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

In this work, internal and external flows over superhydrophobic (SH) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were studied. The SH surface was fabricated by a one-step femtosecond laser micromachining process. The drag reduction ability of the textured surface was studied experimentally both in microscale and macroscale internal flows. The slip length, which indicates drag reduction in fluid flow, was determined in microscale fluid flow with a cone-and-plate rheometer, whereas a pressure channel setup was used for macroscale flow experiments. The textured PTFE surface reduced drag in both experiments yielding comparable slip lengths. Moreover, the experimentally obtained slip lengths correspond well to the result obtained applying a semianalytical model, which considers the solid fraction of the textured surface. In addition to the internal flow studies, we fabricated SH PTFE spheres to test their drag reduction abilities in an external flow experiment, where the terminal velocities of the falling spheres were measured. These experiments were conducted at three different Reynolds numbers in both viscous and inertial flow regimes with pure glycerol, a 30% glycerol solution, and water. Surprisingly, the drag on the SH spheres was higher than the measured drag on the non-SH spheres. We hypothesize that the increase in form drag outweighs the decrease in friction drag on the SH sphere. Thus, the overall drag increased. These experiments demonstrate that a superhydrophobic surface that reduces drag in internal flow might not reduce drag in external flow.

Recent advances in thromboresistant and antimicrobial polymers for biomedical applications: just say yes to nitric oxide (NO)

Biomedical devices are essential for patient diagnosis and treatment; however, when blood comes in contact with foreign surfaces or homeostasis is disrupted, complications including thrombus formation and bacterial infections can interrupt device functionality, causing false readings and/or shorten device lifetime. Here, we review some of the current approaches for developing antithrombotic and antibacterial materials for biomedical applications. Special emphasis is given to materials that release or generate low levels of nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide is an endogenous gas molecule that can inhibit platelet activation as well as bacterial proliferation and adhesion. Various NO delivery vehicles have been developed to improve NO's therapeutic potential. In this review, we provide a summary of the NO releasing and NO generating polymeric materials developed to date, with a focus on the chemistry of different NO donors, the polymer preparation processes, and in vitro and in vivo applications of the two most promising types of NO donors studied thus far, N-diazeniumdiolates (NONOates) and S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs).
