Development of Eco-friendly Soy Protein Isolate Films with High Mechanical Properties through HNTs, PVA, and PTGE Synergism Effect

SPI-Modified h-BN Nanosheets-Based Thermal Interface Materials for Thermal Management Applications

The rising concern over the usage of electronic devices and the operating environment requires efficient thermal interface materials (TIMs) to take away the excess heat generated from hotspots. TIMs are crucial in dissipating undesired heat by transferring energy from the source to the heat sink. Silicone oil (SO)-based composites are the most used TIMs due to their strong bonding and oxidation resistance. However, thermal grease performance is unreliable due to aging effects, toxic chemicals, and a higher percentage of fillers. In this work, TIMs are prepared using exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS) as a nanofiller, and they were functionalized by ecofriendly natural biopolymer soy protein isolate (SPI). The exfoliated h-BNNS has an average lateral size of ∼266 nm. The functionalized h-BNNS/SPI are used as fillers in the SO matrix, and composites are prepared using solution mixing. Hydrogen bonding is present between the organic chain/oxygen in silicone polymer, and the functionalized h-BNNS are evident from the FTIR measurements. The thermal conductivity of h-BNNS/SPI/SO was measured using the modified transient plane source (MTPS) method. At room temperature, the maximum thermal conductivity is 1.162 Wm-1K-1 (833% enhancement) at 50 wt % of 3:1 ratio of h-BNNS:SPI, and the thermal resistance (TR) of the composite is 5.249 × 106 K/W which is calculated using the Foygel nonlinear model. The heat management application was demonstrated by applying TIM on a 10 W LED bulb. It was found that during heating, the 50 wt % TIM decreases the surface temperature of LED by ∼6 °C compared with the pure SO-based TIM after 10 min of ON condition. During cooling, the modified TIM reduces the surface temperature by ∼8 °C under OFF conditions within 1 min. The results indicate that natural polymers can effectively stabilize and link layered materials, enhancing the efficiency of TIMs for cooling electronics and LEDs.

Fabrication of Silver Nanoparticle Loaded into Nanocellulose Derived from Hemp and Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Composite as an Electrode for Electrochemical Sensors for Lactate Determination

Nanocellulose derived from hemp (HNC) with the addition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is utilized for improving the electrochemical sensing performances for lactate detection. Initially, HNC is chemically extracted and purified by using alkali treatment and acid hydrolysis. Then, AgNPs are nucleated in situ by the self-reduction process prior to forming a composite with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). This nanocomposite significantly improves the electrochemical properties of the electrode, including electrochemical conductivity and electrocatalysis. The morphologies and chemical alterations of the HNC/AgNPs-PVA nanocomposite are investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy. It demonstrates a three-dimensional network with random orientation of the nanocellulose fiber. The AgNPs are well-dispersed in the nanocomposite. Moreover, the nanocomposite provides high thermal stability up to 450 °C. Then, it is remarkably noted that 10 wt % HNC/AgNPs-PVA modified on the electrode provides the highest current responses, with a standard redox couple [(Fe(CN)6]3-/4-]. For lactate detection, this modified screen-printed graphene electrode with nonimmobilized lactate oxidase exhibits an increase in the current signal with the increment of lactate concentration and offered a linear range of 0-25 mM, covering a cutoff value (12.5 mM) for muscle fatigue indication. Eventually, this sensor is successfully applied for lactate detection with high potential for a wearable lactate sensor.

Encapsulation of polyphenols in protein-based nanoparticles: Preparation, properties, and applications

Polyphenols have a variety of physiological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, their applications are often limited because due to the instability of polyphenols. Encapsulation technologies can be employed to overcome these problems and increase the utilization of polyphenols. In this article, the utilization of protein-based nanoparticles for encapsulating polyphenols is reviewed due to their good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and functional attributes. Initially, the various kinds of animal and plant proteins available for forming protein nanoparticles are discussed, as well as the fabrication methods that can be used to assemble these nanoparticles. The molecular interaction mechanisms between proteins and polyphenols are then summarized. Applications of protein-based nanoparticles for encapsulating polyphenols are then discussed, including as nutrient delivery systems, in food packaging materials, and in the creation of functional foods. Finally, areas where further research is need on the development, characterization, and application of protein-based polyphenol-loaded nanoparticles are highlighted.

New Polyvinyl Alcohol/Succinoglycan-Based Hydrogels for pH-Responsive Drug Delivery

We fabricated new hydrogels using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and succinoglycan (SG) directly isolated and obtained from Sinorhizobium meliloti Rm 1021 via the freeze-thaw method. Both the composition of the hydrogels and the freeze-thaw cycles were optimized to maximize the swelling ratio for the preparation of the PVA/SG hydrogels. During the optimization process, the morphology and conformational change in the hydrogel were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, rheological measurements, and compressive tests. An optimized hydrogel with a maximum swelling ratio of 17.28 g/g was obtained when the composition of PVA to SG was 50:50 (PVA/SG 50/50) and the total number of freeze-thaw cycles was five. The PVA/SG 50/50 hydrogel had the largest pore with 51.24% porosity and the highest cross-over point (28.17%) between the storage modulus (G') and the loss modulus (G″). The PVA/SG 50/50 hydrogel showed improved thermal stability owing to its interaction with thermally stable SG chains. The improvement in the thermal stability was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. In addition, the PVA/SG 50/50 hydrogel showed differential drug release according to the corresponding pH under acidic conditions of pH 1.2 and slightly basic conditions of pH 7.4. Furthermore, the cell viability test on the HEK-293 cell line for that hydrogel demonstrated that the PVA/SG 50/50 hydrogel was non-toxic and biocompatible. Therefore, this hydrogel could be a potential scaffold capable of pH-responsive drug delivery for chronic wound dressing applications.

Soy Protein/Polyvinyl-Alcohol (PVA)-Based Packaging Films Reinforced by Nano-TiO2

This work was investigated to prepare a reinforcing composite packaging film composited of soy protein/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nano-TiO2. First, different film compositions were designed by the particle size of nano-TiO2, concentration of nano-TiO2, concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, a dispersing agent for nano-TiO2), and pH of film casting solution. Then, the film composition that yielded the optimal physical properties was identified using orthogonal array design single-factor experiments, considering its physical properties, including tensile strength, elongation, water absorption, water vapor transmission, oxygen permeation, thermal property, and film morphology. The results displayed that the optimal film composition was (1) soy protein/PVA film with 2.5 wt% nano-TiO2, (2) 30 nm nano-TiO2 particle size, (3) 1.5 wt% PVP, and (4) pH 6.0 of film-forming solution. It yielded tensile strength of 6.77 MPa, elongation at break rate of 58.91%, and water absorption of 44.89%. Last, the films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEM analysis showed that compared with the film without TiO2, the film containing TiO2 has a smoother surface, and DSC determined that adding nano-TiO2 can improve the thermostability of soy protein/PVA film. Therefore, the film prepared in this paper is expected to provide a new theoretical basis for use in the packaging industry.

Bionanocomposite Active Packaging Material Based on Soy Protein Isolate/Persian Gum/Silver Nanoparticles; Fabrication and Characteristics

In this study, nanocomposite active films were fabricated containing silver nanoparticles (SNPs) embedded within soy protein isolate (SPI)/Persian gum (PG) matrices. The physical, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of these composite films were then characterized. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to provide information about the microstructure, interactions, and crystallinity of the films. Pure SPI films had poor physicochemical attributes but the addition of PG (0.25, 0.5, or 1 wt%) improved their water vapor permeability, mechanical properties, and water solubility (WS). The moisture content (MC) of the films decreased after the introduction of PG, which was attributed to fewer free hydroxyl groups to bind to the water molecules. Our results suggest there was a strong interaction between the SPI and the PG and SNPs in the films, suggesting these additives behaved like active fillers. Optimum film properties were obtained at 0.25% PG in the SPI films. The addition of PG (0.25%) and SNPs (1%) led to a considerable increase in tensile strength (TS) and a decrease in elongation at break (EB). Furthermore, the incorporation of the SNPs into the SPI/PG composite films increased their antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), with the effects being more prominent for S. aureus. Spectroscopy analyses provided insights into the nature of the molecular interactions between the different components in the films. Overall, the biodegradable active films developed in this study may be suitable for utilization as eco-friendly packaging materials in the food industry.

Novel high strength PVA/soy protein isolate composite hydrogels and their properties

High strength polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/soy protein isolate (SPI) composite hydrogels (EPSG) were constructed by the introduction of PVA into SPI through the crosslinking with epichlorohydrin (ECH) and a freezing-thawing process. The EPSG hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, X-ray diffraction and compressive test. The results revealed that chemical crosslinking interactions occurred for SPI and PVA during the fabrication process. The composite hydrogels exhibited a homogenous porous structure, indicating certain miscibility between PVA and SPI. The introduction of PVA increased the compressive strength of SPI hydrogels greatly, which could reach as high as 5.38 MPa with the water content ratio of 89.5%. Moreover, the water uptake ratio of completely dried SPI hydrogel (namely xerogel) decreased gradually from 327.4% to 148.1% with the incorporation of PVA, showing a better potential as implants. The cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility of the EPSG hydrogels were evaluated by a series of in vitro experiments. The results showed that the EPSG hydrogels had no cytotoxicity (cell viability values were above 86.7%), good biocompatibility and hemocompatibility, showing potential applications as a direct blood contact material in the field of tissue engineering.

Soybean Protein Fiber Enabled Controllable Li Deposition and a LiF-Nanocrystal-Enriched Interface for Stable Li Metal Batteries

The proliferation of lithium (Li) dendrites stemming from uncontrollable Li deposition seriously limits the practical application of Li metal batteries. The regulation of uniform Li deposition is thus a prerequisite for promoting a stable Li metal anode. Herein, a commercial lithiophilic skeleton of soybean protein fiber (SPF) is introduced to homogenize the Li-ion flux and induce the biomimetic Li growth behavior. Especially, the SPF can promote the formation of a LiF-nanocrystal-enriched interface upon cycling, resulting in low interfacial impedance and rapid charge transfer kinetics. Finally, the SPF-mediated Li metal anode can achieve high Coulombic efficiency of 98.7% more than 550 cycles and a long-term lifespan over 3400 h (∼8500 cycles) in symmetric tests. Furthermore, the practical pouch cell modified with SPF can maintain superior electrochemical performance over 170 cycles under a low N/P ratio and high mass loading of the cathode.

High-performance soy protein-based films from cellulose nanofibers and graphene oxide constructed synergistically via hydrogen and chemical bonding

Soybean protein isolate (SPI) shows a broad application prospect in the food and packaging industry. However, its inferior mechanical properties and water resistance limit its application. In this work, a series of SPI-based composite films were prepared by combining with cellulose nanofiber (CNF), graphene oxide (GO), GO/CNF, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EDGE) or GO/CNF/EGDE. The results show that by adding a small amount of reinforced materials (3%), the water resistance, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and thermal stability of composite films were improved. The filling effect and hydrogen bonding of the reinforcing materials contribute to the formation of film structure. EGDE cross-link SPI with CNF and GO build a chemical network to improve the properties of the film. In addition, they could make a synergistic effect to better enhance the performance of a protein film. Therefore, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the SGCE film reached 469.21% and 367.58%, respectively.

Controlled self-assembly of plant proteins into high-performance multifunctional nanostructured films

The abundance of plant-derived proteins, as well as their biodegradability and low environmental impact make them attractive polymeric feedstocks for next-generation functional materials to replace current petroleum-based systems. However, efforts to generate functional materials from plant-based proteins in a scalable manner have been hampered by the lack of efficient methods to induce and control their micro and nanoscale structure, key requirements for achieving advantageous material properties and tailoring their functionality. Here, we demonstrate a scalable approach for generating mechanically robust plant-based films on a metre-scale through controlled nanometre-scale self-assembly of water-insoluble plant proteins. The films produced using this method exhibit high optical transmittance, as well as robust mechanical properties comparable to engineering plastics. Furthermore, we demonstrate the ability to impart nano- and microscale patterning into such films through templating, leading to the formation of hydrophobic surfaces as well as structural colour by controlling the size of the patterned features.

Protein based packaging of plant origin: Fabrication, properties, recent advances and future perspectives

Huge plastic waste is receiving worldwide attention nowadays due to its resistance to degradation and toxicity on environmental components including humans. Improper disposal of plastics affect the food chain and compromise various activities of aquatic life. Each facet of the plastic waste problem requires a significant attention and compels its elimination from the environment due to its ecologically deleterious threats. Therefore, this problem of plastic pollution and issues related thereof merits an attention regarding the alternatives wherein biopolymer based packaging has a potential role to play. This line of research has received a renewed focus where biodegradable films are being developed from proteins which are obtained from animals (include fish myofibrillar protein, collagen, gelatine, etc), and plants especially graminacea (rice, wheat, maize, barley etc), leguminaceae (soya beans, pea, etc.), asteraceae (sunflower) but little attention has been paid towards the potential of aquatic plants for development of packaging material. The present review provides a comprehensive account of biodegradable films developed from plant proteins viz. soy protein, wheat gluten, corn zein and sunflower protein as emerging supplement to plastics. Moreover, this article also tip-offs the potential of macrophytes for fabrication of protein based packaging films incorporated with bioactive materials extracted from macrophytes.

Patient-specific 3D-printed Splint for Mallet Finger Injury

Despite the frequency of mallet finger injuries, treatment options can often be costly, time-consuming, and ill-fitted. Three-dimensional (3D) printing allows for the production of highly customized and inexpensive splints, which suggests potential efficacy in the prescription of casts for musculoskeletal injuries. This study explores how the use of engineering concepts such as 3D printing and topology optimization (TO) can improve outcomes for patients. 3D printing enables the direct fabrication of the patient-specific complex shapes while utilizing finite element analysis and TO in the design of the splint allowed for the most efficient distribution of material to achieve mechanical requirements while reducing the amount of material used. The reduction in used material leads to significant improvements in weight reduction and heat dissipation, which would improve breathability and less sweating for the patient, greatly increasing comfort for the duration of their recovery.

Tough and Functional Cross-linked Bioplastics from Sheep Wool Keratin

Novel bioplastic films derived from wool keratins were prepared by protein solution in an alkaline mild oxidative method that splits disulphide (-S-S-) bonds. The native structure of the keratin macromolecules was partially modified upon extraction as revealed by the decrease of the β-sheet to α-helices/coils ratio but high molecular weight fractions (31, 22 and 13 KDa) was retained permitting film formation and plastic behaviour of films. Keratin films were plasticised with glycerol and sodium dodecyl sulphonic acid (SDS), which provided different hydrophobic character to bioplastics. Water content in the films depend on the relative humidity (RH), being able to absorb up to 35 wt% H2O at an ambient of 80% RH. Films were mechanically, thermally and optically analysed. The spectroscopic analyses revelled that these bioplastic films absorb UV light, what is interesting for packaging applications. Thermogravimetric and thermomechanical analysis revealed high stability of keratin macromolecules up to 200 °C with no inherent thermal transitions. Tough bioplastics (19 ± 4 MJ∙ m-3) were obtained after thermal cross-linking with glycerol and formaldehyde outperforming mechanical properties previously reported for protein films.

Sodium Hydroxide-Free Soy Protein Isolate-Based Films Crosslinked by Pentaerythritol Glycidyl Ether

The soy protein isolate (SPI), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and pentaerythritol glycidyl ether (PEGE) were used to make biodegradable films in this study. Unlike the usual method that adding sodium hydroxide (NaOH) during the SPI-based film casting, SDBS was used as a surfactant playing the similar role as NaOH. Since NaOH is a chemical with corrosiveness and toxicity, the replacing of NaOH by SDBS might reduce the hazard threat during the utilization of SPI-based films in food packing application. Furthermore, the presentation of SDBS helped dispersing the hydrophobic PEGE into the hydrophilic SPI. PEGE is a crosslinking agent with multiple reactive epoxy groups. The chemical structures and micro morphologies of the fabricated films were investigated by means of FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The thermal stabilities of the films were examined by means of the thermo-gravimetric analysis. After the chemical crosslinking, the ultimate tensile strength of the film was significantly increased, meanwhile, the water absorption was dramatically decreased. It was concluded that the SPI-based film containing 4% PEGE achieved the optimal performance.

Improvement in Functional Properties of Soy Protein Isolate-Based Film by Cellulose Nanocrystal⁻Graphene Artificial Nacre Nanocomposite

A facile, inexpensive, and green approach for the production of stable graphene dispersion was proposed in this study. We fabricated soy protein isolate (SPI)-based nanocomposite films with the combination of 2D negative charged graphene and 1D positive charged polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) via a layer-by-layer assembly method. The morphologies and surface charges of graphene sheets and CNC segments were characterized by atomic force microscopy and Zeta potential measurements. The hydrogen bonds and multiple interface interactions between the filler and SPI matrix were analyzed by Attenuated Total Reflectance⁻Fourier Transform Infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated the cross-linked and laminated structures in the fracture surface of the films. In comparison with the unmodified SPI film, the tensile strength and surface contact angles of the SPI/graphene/PEI-CNC film were significantly improved, by 99.73% and 37.13% respectively. The UV⁻visible light barrier ability, water resistance, and thermal stability were also obviously enhanced. With these improved functional properties, this novel bio-nanocomposite film showed considerable potential for application for food packaging materials.

Simultaneously Toughening and Strengthening Soy Protein Isolate-Based Composites via Carboxymethylated Chitosan and Halloysite Nanotube Hybridization

Chemical cross-linking modification can significantly enhance the tensile strength (TS) of soy protein isolate (SPI)-based composites, but usually at the cost of a reduction in the elongation at break (EB). In this study, eco-friendly and high-potential hybrid SPI-based nanocomposites with improved TS were fabricated without compromising the reduction of EB. The hybrid of carboxymethylated chitosan (CMCS) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as the enhancement center was added to the SPI and 1,2,3-propanetriol-diglycidyl-ether (PTGE) solution. The chemical structure, crystallinity, micromorphology, and opacity properties of the obtained SPI/PTGE/HNTs/CMCS film was analyzed by the attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated that HNTs were uniformly dispersed in the SPI matrix without crystal structure damages. Compared to the SPI/PTGE film, the TS and EB of the SPI/PTGE/HNTs/CMCS film were increased by 57.14% and 27.34%, reaching 8.47 MPa and 132.12%, respectively. The synergy of HNTs and CMCS via electrostatic interactions also improved the water resistance of the SPI/PTGE/HNTs/CMCS film. These films may have considerable potential in the field of sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging.

Unique Halloysite Nanotubes⁻Polyvinyl Alcohol⁻Polyvinylpyrrolidone Composite Complemented with Physico⁻Chemical Characterization

A halloysite nanotubes–polyvinyl alcohol–polyvinylpyrrolidone (HNTs–PVA–PVP) composite has been investigated for a quite long time aiming at improving the physico–chemical characterization of HNTs. In this work, HNTs–PVA–PVP composite were prepared based on a unique procedure characterized by crosslinking two polymers with HNTs. The composite of two polymers were modified by treating HNTs with phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) and by using malonic acid (MA) as a crosslinker. The composite was also treated by adding the dispersion agent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The HNTs–PVA–PVP composite shows better characteristics regarding agglomeration when HNTs is treated in advance by H₃PO₄. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), brunauer–emmett–teller (BET), size distribution, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to characterize the physio-chemical properties of the composite. FTIR shows additional peaks at 2924.29, 1455.7, and 682.4 cm⁻¹ compared to the neat HNTs due to adding MA. Despite that, the XRD spectra do not show a significant difference, the decrease in peak intensity could be attributed to the addition of semi-crystalline PVA and the amorphous PVP. The images taken by TEM and FESEM show the possible effects of MA on the morphology and internal feature of HNTs–PVA–PVP composite treated by MA by showing the deformation of the matrix. The BET surface area increased to 121.1 m²/g compared to the neat HNTs at 59.1 m²/g. This result, the second highest recorded result, is considered a breakthrough in enhancing the properties of HNTs–PVA–PVP composite, and treatment by MA crosslinking may attribute to the size and the number of the pores. The results from these techniques clearly showed that a significant change has occurred for treated HNTs–PVA–PVP composite where MA was added. The characterization of HNTs–PVA–PVP composite with and without treating HNTs and using crosslinker may lead to a better understanding of this new composites as a precursor to possible applications in the dentistry field.
