Towards “smart” multiphoton fluorophores: strongly solvatochromic probes for two-photon sensing of micropolarity

Unveiling the Use of 1,1-Bis(triflyl)ethylene as CF3SO2CH═CH2 Source with the Assistance of (n-Bu)4NF: Synthesis of 3-[(Trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]cyclobut-1-enes

Allylic sulfone-embedded cyclobutenes have been prepared in one pot from alkynes. The carbocycle and the alkenyl sulfone moieties were installed through consecutive bis(triflyl)cyclobutenylation of a triple bond and tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF)-assisted hydrodesulfonylation of an allylic bis(sulfone). It is noteworthy that 1,1-bis(triflyl)ethylene acts as a CF3SO2CH═CH2 source for the first time.

Organocatalytic Synthesis of Triflones Bearing Two Non-Adjacent Stereogenic Centers

Trifluoromethylsulfones (triflones) are useful compounds for synthesis and beyond. Yet, methods to access chiral triflones are scarce. Here, we present a mild and efficient organocatalytic method for the stereoselective synthesis of chiral triflones using α-aryl vinyl triflones, building blocks previously unexplored in asymmetric synthesis. The peptide-catalyzed reaction gives rise to a broad range of γ-triflylaldehydes with two non-adjacent stereogenic centers in high yields and stereoselectivities. A catalyst-controlled stereoselective protonation following a C-C bond formation is key to control over the absolute and relative configuration. Straightforward derivatization of the products into, e.g., disubstituted δ-sultones, γ-lactones, and pyrrolidine heterocycles highlights the synthetic versatility of the products.

Alkoxy-Substituted Quadrupolar Fluorescent Dyes

Polar and polarizable π-conjugated organic molecules containing push-pull chromophores have been investigated extensively in the past. Identifying unique backbones and building blocks for fluorescent dyes is a timely exercise. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of fluorescent dyes containing quadrupolar A-D-A constitutions (where A = acceptor and D = donor), which exhibit fluorescence emission at a variety of different wavelengths. We have investigated the effects of different electron-withdrawing groups, located at both termini of a para-terphenylene backbone, by steady-state UV/vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Pyridine and substituted pyridinium units are also introduced during the construction of the quadrupolar backbones. Depending on the quadrupolarity, fluorescence emission wavelengths cover from 380 to 557 nm. Time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy reveal that the photophysical properties of those quadrupolar dyes result from intramolecular charge transfer. One of the dyes we have investigated is a symmetrical box-like tetracationic cyclophane. Its water-soluble tetrachloride, which is non-cytotoxic to cells up to a loading concentration of 1 μM, has been employed in live-cell imaging. When taken up by cells, the tetrachloride emits a green fluorescence emission without any hint of photobleaching or disruption of normal cell behavior. We envision that our design strategy of modifying molecules through the functionalization of the quadrupolar building blocks as chromophores will lead to future generations of fluorescent dyes in which these A-D-A constitutional fragments are incorporated into more complex molecules and polymers for broader photophysical and biological applications.

Two-Photon Absorption Cooperative Effects within Multi-Dipolar Ruthenium Complexes: The Decisive Influence of Charge Transfers

One- and two-photon characterizations of a series of hetero- and homoleptic [RuL_3-n(bpy)_n]²⁺ (n = 0, 1, 2) complexes carrying bipyridine π-extended ligands (L), have been carried out. These π-extended D−π−A−A−π−D-type ligands (L), where the electron donor units (D) are based on diphenylamine, carbazolyl, or fluorenyl units, have been designed to modulate the conjugation extension and the donating effect. Density functional theory calculations were performed in order to rationalize the observed spectra. Calculations show that the electronic structure of the π-extended ligands has a pronounced effect on the composition of HOMO and LUMO and on the metallic contribution to frontier MOs, resulting in strikingly different nonlinear properties. This work demonstrates that ILCT transitions are the keystone of one- and two-photon absorption bands in the studied systems and reveals how much MLCT and LLCT charge transfers play a decisive role on the two-photon properties of both hetero- and homoleptic ruthenium complexes through cooperative or suppressive effects.

Effect of Symmetry Breaking in Excited Quadrupole Molecules on Transition Dipole Moment

Manifestations of charge transfer symmetry breaking in excited quadrupolar molecules in optical spectra are theoretically studied. The molecules are supposed to have π-conjugated structures of A-π-D-π-A or D-π-A-π-D character, where electron acceptors (A) or electron donors (D) are identical. A theory describing the effect of symmetry breaking and solvent fluctuations on the dipole moments of optical transitions associated with absorption by a quadrupolar dye in the ground and excited states, as well as fluorescence, is developed. Simple equations describing the influence of the symmetry breaking extent on the transition dipole moments are found. The orientational solvent fluctuations are predicted to decrease the transition dipole moment of the ground state absorption. The decrease does not exceed 10%. A considerably larger effect of symmetry breaking and the solvent fluctuations on the emission dipole moment is found. Equations describing dependencies of the transition dipole moment associated with excited state absorption on the solvent polarity and the parameters of the dye are derived. The scale of the changes in the transition dipole moments due to symmetry breaking in the excited state are determined. The influence of the polar solvent fluctuations is also taken into account. The theoretical findings are shown to be consistent with the available experimental data.

Expeditious and Efficient ortho-Selective Trifluoromethane-sulfonylation of Arylhydroxylamines

A metal- and oxidant-free, practical and efficient method for the synthesis of highly versatile and synthetically useful ortho-trifluoromethanesulfonylated anilines from arylhydroxylamines and trifluoromethanesulfinic chloride was developed. This rapid transformation proceeded smoothly with good yields and excellent ortho-selectivity in the absence of any metals or ligands. Mechanistically, the reaction comprised a noncanonical O-trifluoromethanesulfinylation of the arylhydroxylamine, and the subsequent [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to afford ortho-trifluoromethanesulfonylated aniline derivatives. The practical application of this reaction was demonstrated by further conversion into a series of functional molecules under different reaction conditions.

Excited-State Symmetry Breaking in a Multiple Multipolar Chromophore Probed by Single-Molecule Fluorescence Imaging and Spectroscopy

Excited-state symmetry breaking (ESB) has attracted much attention because it is often observed in symmetric multipolar chromophores designed as two-photon absorption/emission materials. Herein, we report an ensemble and single-molecule fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy investigation of ESB in hexakis[4-(p-dioctylaminostyryl)phenylethynyl]benzene(DB6), a two-photon absorber possessing a C₆-symmetric π-D₆ structure (π = hexaethynylbenzene, D = (p-dioctylaminostyryl)phenyl group) consisting of three equivalent D-π-D moieties. Ensemble and single-molecule measurements and theoretical calculations revealed that DB6 undergoes a photoabsorption process with two orthogonal transition dipole moments, whereas it fluoresces with a single transition dipole moment after one- or two-step ESB upon photoexcitation, depending on the environmental polarity. In nonpolar solvents and polymer films, one of the three D-π-D sites becomes planar, and the excited state is localized on this moiety: a [D^δ+-π^δ--D^δ+]* quadrupolar state is formed. In polar solvents, the symmetry is further broken within the planarized D-π-D moiety, and the excited state is localized on one of the two D-π sites; i.e., a D-[π^δ--D^δ+]* dipolar state is generated. Hence, DB6 can behave like a multichromophore with multiple emission sites in the molecule, which was demonstrated by stepwise photobleaching under photon antibunching conditions.

Octupolar Acrylonitrile-Bridged 2D-Conjugated Polymers Enable Bright Far-Red Emission with Intense Two-Photon Absorption via Alkoxylation Chemistry

Herein, alkoxylation chemistry is introduced as a "one-stone-three-birds" solution for exploring a new family of highly-fluorescent octupolar 2D-conjugated organic polymers/frameworks (OCOPs/OCOFs) combining far-red emission, high fluorescence quantum yield (QY), and strong two-photon absorption (TPA). Both alkoxy-substituted OCOP and OCOF comprising acrylonitrile-bridged strongly-coupled donor3-(acceptor core) chromophores densely packed in either disordered or ordered forms, exhibit significantly redshifted emission. They produce high QY of 22.2% and 27.8% in tetrahydrofuran, large TPA cross section of 600 and 1124 GM, and 2-3 folds and 15-30 folds that of non-alkoxylate amorphous counterpart respectively. Combined theoretical and experimental studies reveal unique "one-stone-three-birds" role of the alkoxylation in realizing red-shifted-emission, improved QY and TPA enabled by inducing steric hindrance effect for weakened π-π stacking, and triggering p-π conjugation effect for electronically engineering octupolar chromophores, while the crystalline engineering enables enforced coplanarity conformation and improved π-electron delocalization for further improved QY and TPA. The robust and biocompatible pentoxy-substituted polymer can be used not only as metal-free red-emissive phosphor for efficient warm white light-emitting diodes, but also as efficient two-photon fluorescence probes for bio-imaging.

Symmetry Breaking in an Excited Quadrupolar Acridine-Dione Derivative Driven by Hydrogen Bonding

An acridine-dione derivative (3,3,11,11-tetramethyl-8,16-diphenyl-3,4,8,10,11,12,13,16-octahydroacridino[4,3-c]acridine-1.9(2H,5H)dion) with quadrupolar motif has been synthesized and its stationary and transient spectra have been measured. Stationary absorption and fluorescence spectra as well as nonstationary spectra show no signs of symmetry breaking (SB) in aprotic solvents, even of high polarity. The specific features of SB are revealed in alcohol solvents through a considerable red shift of stationary fluorescence spectra and the appearance of a new excited state absorption band in transient absorption spectra. SB is due to the formation of asymmetric strong hydrogen bonds, mainly on one side of the molecule. An unexpected regularity of symmetry breaking is found in mixtures of aprotic dimethylformamide and protic methanol, where methanol acts as a fluorescence quencher. It is revealed that there is no quenching as long as the methanol concentration is less than the critical value of 9 M. This leads to the conclusion that SB in such mixtures is possible only if the concentration of the protic solvent exceeds a certain threshold value.

The Effect of Branching on the One- and Two-Photon Absorption, Cell Viability, and Localization of Cationic Triarylborane Chromophores with Dipolar versus Octupolar Charge Distributions for Cellular Imaging

Two different chromophores, namely a dipolar and an octupolar system, were prepared and their linear and nonlinear optical properties as well as their bioimaging capabilities were compared. Both contain triphenylamine as the donor and a triarylborane as the acceptor, the latter modified with cationic trimethylammonio groups to provide solubility in aqueous media. The octupolar system exhibits a much higher two-photon brightness, and also better cell viability and enhanced selectivity for lysosomes compared with the dipolar chromophore. Furthermore, both dyes were applied in two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) live-cell imaging.

Excited-state dynamics of a molecular dyad with two orthogonally-oriented fluorophores

The excited-state dynamics of a T-shaped bichromophoric molecule, consisting of two strong fluorophores, diphenyloxazole and diphenylpyrazoline, directly linked in an orthogonal geometry, was investigated. Despite the weak coupling ensured by this geometry and confirmed by the electronic absorption spectra, this dyad exhibits only weak fluorescence in both apolar and polar solvents, with fluorescence lifetimes ranging from 200 ps in CHX to 10 ps in ACN. Ultrafast spectroscopic measurements reveal that the fluorescence quenching in polar solvents is due to the population of a charge-separated state. In non-polar solvents, this process is energetically not feasible, and a quenching due to an efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet manifold is proposed, based on quantum-chemical calculations. This process occurs via the spin-orbit charge-transfer (SOCT) ISC mechanism, which is enabled by the charge-transfer character acquired by the S1 state of the dyad upon structural relaxation and by the orthogonal arrangement of the molecular orbitals involved in the transition. The same mechanism is proposed to explain why the recombination of the charge-separated state is faster in medium than in highly polar solvents, as well as to account for the fast decay of the lowest triplet state to the ground state.

The Solvatochromic Materials: A Progress Review

Solvatochromic compounds attracted more and more attentions in the application of fluorescent probe, indicator, chromogenic reagent, molecular recognition field and so on. Although sovatochromic effects have been discovered for more than a century, they are still difficult to understand and even more difficult to predict. This review introduced organometallic complexes and organic compounds of solvatochromic materials and highlight the latest progress in recent years, and the molecular structure design and solvatochromic properties are discussed.

Synthesis of Aryl Triflones through the Trifluoromethanesulfonylation of Benzynes

The direct synthesis of aryl triflones, that is, trifluoromethanesulfonyl arenes, was achieved through the trifluoromethanesulfonylation of benzynes. The trifluoromethanesulfonyl group, one of the fluorinated functional groups, is a highly electron-negative and mild lipophilic substituent. Aryl triflones have high potential in the synthesis of bioactive compounds and specialty materials. The treatment of 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl trifluoromethanesulfonates with cesium fluoride in the presence of 15-crown-5 generated benzynes, which reacted with sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate followed by protonation with tBuOH under heating conditions, provided aryl triflones in moderated to good yields. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical triflones were nicely accessed under the same reaction conditions. Interestingly, the trifluoromethanesulfonylation of unsymmetrical benzyne precursors proceeded smoothly to furnish corresponding aryl triflones in good yields with good to high regioselectivities. The balance of polarization of electric charge as well as steric hindrance of the benzyne intermediates are central factors to control the outcome of regioselectivity.

Specific Monitoring of Excited-State Symmetry Breaking by Femtosecond Broadband Fluorescence Upconversion Spectroscopy

Most quadrupolar molecules designed for large two-photon absorption cross section have been shown to undergo symmetry breaking upon excitation to the S₁ state. This was originally deduced from their strong fluorescence solvatochromism and later visualized in real time using transient infrared spectroscopy. For molecules not containing clear IR marker modes, however, a specific real-time observation of the symmetry breaking process remains lacking. Here we show that this process can be resolved using broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy by monitoring the instantaneous emission transition dipole moment. This approach is illustrated with measurements performed on two quadrupolar molecules, with only one of them undergoing excited-state symmetry breaking in polar solvents.

Deep Tissue Imaging with Multiphoton Fluorescence Microscopy

We present a review of imaging deep-tissue structures with multiphoton microscopy. We examine the effects of light scattering and absorption due to the optical properties of biological sample and identify 1,300 nm and 1,700 nm as ideal excitation wavelengths. We summarize the availability of fluorophores for multiphoton microscopy as well as ultrafast laser sources to excite available fluorophores. Lastly, we discuss the applications of multiphoton microscopy for neuroscience.

Electrophilic Triflyl-arylation and Triflyl-pyridylation by Unsymmetrical Aryl/Pyridyl-λ3-iodonium Salts: Synthesis of Aryl and Pyridyl Triflones

Unsymmetrical diaryl-λ³-iodonium salts containing aryl triflone (Ar-SO₂CF₃) were designed and synthesized. X-ray crystal structure analysis of the salt indicated a T-shaped geometry at the iodine atom. The salts were found to be powerful electrophilic reagents for triflyl-arylation of C-, N-, and O-centered nucleophiles under mild conditions. Electrophilic transfer of pyridine triflone (Py-SO₂CF₃) to nucleophiles was also realized by the use of corresponding triflylpyridyl-aryl-λ³-iodonium salts. Selection of auxiliaries (dummy ligands) of unsymmetrical diaryl-λ³-iodonium salts is crucial for this transformation.

Symmetry Breaking in Pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles: Synthesis, Solvatofluorochromism and Two-photon Absorption

Five centrosymmetric and one dipolar pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles, possessing either two or one strongly electron-withdrawing nitro group have been synthesized in a straightforward manner from simple building blocks. For the symmetric compounds, the nitroaryl groups induced spontaneous breaking of inversion symmetry in the excited state, thereby leading to large solvatofluorochromism. To study the origin of this effect, the series employed peripheral structural motifs that control the degree of conjugation via altering of dihedral angle between the 4-nitrophenyl moiety and the electron-rich core. We observed that for compounds with a larger dihedral angle, the fluorescence quantum yield decreased quickly when exposed to even moderately polar solvents. Reducing the dihedral angle (i.e., placing the nitrobenzene moiety in the same plane as the rest of the molecule) moderated the dependence on solvent polarity so that the dye exhibited significant emission, even in THF. To investigate at what stage the symmetry breaking occurs, we measured two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra and 2PA cross-sections (σ_2PA ) for all six compounds. The 2PA transition profile of the dipolar pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole, followed the corresponding one-photon absorption (1PA) spectrum, which provided an estimate of the change of the permanent electric dipole upon transition, ≈18 D. The nominally symmetric compounds displayed an allowed 2PA transition in the wavelength range of 700-900 nm. The expansion via a triple bond resulted in the largest peak value, σ_2PA =770 GM, whereas altering the dihedral angle had no effect other than reducing the peak value two- or even three-fold. In the S₀ →S₁ transition region, the symmetric structures also showed a partial overlap between 2PA and 1PA transitions in the long-wavelength wing of the band, from which a tentative, relatively small dipole moment change, 2-7 D, was deduced, thus suggesting that some small symmetry breaking may be possible in the ground state, even before major symmetry breaking occurs in the excited state.

Nonplanar Butterfly-Shaped π-Expanded Pyrrolopyrroles

Large aza-analogues of curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with a double-helicene structure present unique features for molecular photonics. We present the preparation and characterization of three such structures. The synthesis of these heterocyclic nanographenes involves only a few high-yield steps that use readily available starting materials. X-ray analysis revealed that each of these new dyes has three conformational isomers: one diastereoisomer in a meso form and two enantiomers in twisted forms [(P,P)] and [(M,M)]. The low energy barriers between the conformers, however, prevent their separation by using chiral HPLC, and the NMR spectra show only one set of signals for each of these curved compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations quantify the small energy difference and the small energy barriers between the chiral and meso forms, which fully supports the experimental results. Their optical absorption lacks any sensitivity to the solvent environment, whereas their fluorescence features exhibit pronounced solvatochromism. This rarely observed solvatofluorochromism of centrosymmetric molecules without either electron-withdrawing groups or -donating substituents was probed by using time-resolved spectroscopy. These studies suggest that, similar to 9,9'-bianthryl, the nonpolar locally excited state shows negligible solvatochromism, whereas the charge-transfer state is sensitive to solvent polarity.

Pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles-From Unprecedented Solvatofluorochromism to Two-Photon Absorption

A combined experimental and theoretical study of the two-photon absorption (2PA) properties of a series of quadrupolar molecules possessing a highly electron-rich heterocyclic core, pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole, is presented. In agreement with quantum-chemical calculations, large 2PA cross-section values, σ2PA ≈10(2) -10(3)  GM (1 GM=10(50)  cm(4)  s photon(-1) ), are observed at wavelengths of 650-700 nm, which correspond to the two-photon allowed but one-photon forbidden transitions. The calculations also predict that increased planarity of this molecule through removal of two N-substituents leads to further increase in the σ2PA values. Surprisingly, the most quadrupolar pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole derivative, containing two 4-nitrophenyl substituents at positions 2 and 5, demonstrates a very strong solvatofluorochromic effect, with a fluorescence quantum yield as high as 0.96 in cyclohexane, whereas the fluorescence vanishes in DMSO.

Two-photon absorption properties and (1)O2 generation ability of Ir complexes: an unexpected large cross section of [Ir(CO)2Cl(4-(para-di-n-butylaminostyryl)pyridine)]

The new complexes cis-[Ir(CO)2Cl(4-(para-di-n-butylaminostyryl)pyridine)] () and [Ir(cyclometallated-2-phenylpyridine)2(4,4'-(para-di-n-butylaminostyryl)-2,2'-bipyridine)][PF6] () were synthesized and fully characterized along with the known complex Ir(cyclometallated-2-phenylpyridine)2(5-Me-1,10-phenanthroline)][PF6] (). Remarkably, complex , with an Ir(i) centre, displays fluorescence - as opposed to the phosphorescence typical of many Ir(iii) complexes - with a modestly high quantum yield in solution, opening a new route for the design of iridium-based emitters which should not be limited to the +3 oxidation state. It is also characterized by an unexpectedly large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section, an order of magnitude higher than that previously reported for Ir(iii) or Pt(ii) complexes. The great potential of cyclometallated Ir(iii) complexes for photodynamic therapy was confirmed, with and showing a good singlet oxygen generation ability, coupled with a modest TPA activity for .

Organocatalyzed Trifluoromethylation of Ketones and Sulfonyl Fluorides by Fluoroform under a Superbase System

Fluoroform (HCF3, HFC-23) is a side product in the manufacture of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon). Despite its attractive properties, taming HCF3 for trifluoromethylation is quite problematic owing to its low acidity and the lability of the naked trifluoromethyl carbanion generated from HCF3. Herein we report the organic-superbase-catalyzed trifluoromethylation of ketones and arylsulfonyl fluorides by HCF3. The reactions were carried out by using a newly developed "superbase organocatalyst system" consisting of catalytic amounts of P4-tBu and N(SiMe3)3. A series of aryl and alkyl ketones were converted into the corresponding α-trifluoromethyl carbinols in good yields under the organocatalysis conditions in THF. The superbase organocatalytic system can also be applied to the trifluoromethylation of arylsulfonyl fluorides for biologically important aryl triflones in THF or DMF in good yields. Protonated P4-tBu, H[P4-tBu](+), is suggested to be crucial for the catalytic process. This new catalytic methodology using HCF3 is expected to expand the range of synthetic applications of trifluoromethylation.

Fluorene-based boronic acids as fluorescent chemosensor for monosaccharides at physiological pH

Two fluorene-based boronic acids, 9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl-2-boronic acid (1) and 9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2,7-diyl-2,7-diboronic acid (2), were synthesized and their sensing abilities for detection of D-monosaccharides were investigated by fluorescence at physiological pH. It was found that both boronic acids 1 and 2 have high selectivity and sensitivity for D-fructose with stability constant of 47.2 and 412.9, respectively. The sensor 2 showed a linear response toward D-fructose in the concentration range from 5 × 10(-5) to 10(-1) mol L(-1) with the detection limit of 2 × 10(-5) mol L(-1).

Multiphoton excited fluorescent materials for frequency upconversion emission and fluorescent probes

Recent progress in developing various strategies for exploiting efficient MPA fluorophores for two emerging technological MPA applications including frequency upconversion photoluminescence and lasing as well as 2PA fluorescence bioimaging and biosensing are presented. An intriguing application of MPA frequency-upconverted lasing offers opportunity for the fabrication of high-energy coherent light sources in the blue region which could create new advantages and breakthroughs in various laser-based applications. In addition, multiphoton excitation has led to considerable progress in the development of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic treatments; further advancement is anticipated with the emergence of various versatile 2PA fluorescence probes. It is widely appreciated that the two-photon excitation offers significant advantages for the biological fluorescence imaging and sensing which includes higher spatial resolution, less photobleaching and photodamage as well as deeper tissue penetration as compared to the one-photon excited microscopy. To be practically useful, the 2PA fluorescent probes for biological applications are required to have a site-specificity, a high fluorescence quantum yield, proper two-photon excitation and subsequent emission wavelengths, good photodecomposition stability, water solubility, and biocompatibility besides large 2PA action cross-sections.

Photoinduced symmetry-breaking intramolecular charge transfer in a quadrupolar pyridinium derivative

We report here a joint experimental and theoretical study of a quadrupolar, two-branched pyridinium derivative of interest as a potential non-linear optical material. The spectral and photophysical behaviour of this symmetric system is greatly affected by the polarity of the medium. A very efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer, surprisingly more efficient than in the dipolar asymmetric analogue, is found to occur by femtosecond resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. TD-DFT calculations are in excellent agreement with these experimental findings and predict large charge displacements in the molecular orbitals describing the ground state and the lowest excited singlet state. The theoretical study also revealed that in highly polar media the symmetry of the excited state is broken giving a possible explanation to the fluorescence and transient absorption spectra resembling those of the one-branched analogous compound in the same solvents. The present study may give an important insight into the excited state deactivation mechanism of cationic (donor-π-acceptor-π-donor)(+) quadrupolar compounds characterised by negative solvatochromism, which are expected to show significant two-photon absorption (TPA). Moreover, the water solubility of the investigated quadrupolar system may represent an added value in view of the most promising applications of TPA materials in biology and medicine.
