Abstract
Electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials and devices with controllable fluorescence properties show great application potential in advanced anticounterfeiting, information storage and display. However, the low color purity caused by the broad emission spectra and underperforming switching time of the existing EFC materials limit their application. Through biomimetic exploration and the study of reversible electrochemical responsive coordination reactions, boron-nitrogen embedded polyaromatics (B,N-PAHs) with narrow-band emission and high color purity have been successfully integrated into EFC systems, which also help to better understand the role of boron in biological activity. The EFC device achieve good performance containing quenching efficiency greater than 90% within short switching time (ton: 0.6 s, toff: 2.4 s), and nearly no performance change after 200 cycles test. Three primary color (red, green, and blue) EFC devices are successfully prepared. In addition, new phenomena are obtained and discussed in this biomimetic exploration of related boron reactions. The success and harvest of this exploration are expected to provide new ideas for optimizing properties and broadening applications of EFC materials. Moreover, it may provide ideas and reference significance for further exploring and understanding the function of boron compounds in biological systems.

With the rapid development of optoelectronic fields,
electrochromic
(EC) materials and devices have received remarkable attention and
have shown attractive potential for use in emerging wearable and portable
electronics, electronic papers/billboards, see-through displays, and
other new-generation displays, due to the advantages of low power
consumption, easy viewing, flexibility, stretchability, etc. Despite
continuous progress in related fields, determining how to make electrochromics
truly meet the requirements of mature displays (e.g., ideal overall
performance) has been a long-term problem. Therefore, the commercialization
of relevant high-quality products is still in its infancy. In this
review, we will focus on the progress in emerging EC materials and
devices for potential displays, including two mainstream EC display
prototypes (segmented displays and pixel displays) and their commercial
applications. Among these topics, the related materials/devices, EC
performance, construction approaches, and processing techniques are
comprehensively disscussed and reviewed. We also outline the current
barriers with possible solutions and discuss the future of this field.

Abstract
Integrating fluorescent chromophores in aromatic frameworks could not only prevent aggregation-induced quenching caused by the π-π stacking interaction between the chromophore components but also confer new fluorescence properties. Herein, we report the fabrication of s-tetrazine-bridged aromatic frameworks TzAF by the incorporation of the smallest aromatic fluorophore, s-tetrazine (Tz), into the skeleton of a tetrahedrally connected lattice of aromatic frameworks. The thin films of TzAF coated on silica gel plates were found to exhibit reversible photoswitching fluorescence characteristics under alternate UV and visible-light irradiations with excellent fluorescence stability and high on/off contrast. The repeatable "on/off"fluorescence photoswitchability of the TzAF thin films was mechanistically attributed to light-induced reversible transformation between TzAF's neutral and radical states.

Abstract
Electrofluorochromism owing to redox reactions on the center europium (Eu) ion in ionic liquids is examined for the helicate complexes (abbreviated as EuL) with a hexadentate pyridine derivative. Typical electrofluorochromism requires extra electroactive units complementing intra- or intermolecular energy transfer to quench fluorophores. Herein, an unprecedentedly simplified electrofluorochromic system overcoming such issues is demonstrated by utilizing reversible electrochemistry of EuL between Eu3+ and Eu2+, which accompanies large emission transition. A three-electrode electrochemical switching device is facilely prepared with an ionic liquid [BMIM][PF6] and EuL mixture. Benefiting from the stable helical coordinated structure of the ligand in [BMIM][PF6], highly enhanced red fluorescence of EuL with small quantity (≤1 wt %) is utilized. Rapid response and large contrast of luminescence are achieved: the emission is drastically quenched at the reduced state (Eu2+) and it is successfully restored by subsequent oxidation (Eu3+). The reversible fluctuation of excitation and emission spectra of an electrofluorochromic device is achieved in the potential window within ±2 V. The device affords excellent optoelectric properties in terms of well-controlled luminescence switching depending on the applied potentials and its durability. This work paves an efficient and smart way toward Eu luminescence control in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Electrochromic (EC)/electrofluorochromic (EFC) bifunctional materials are receiving great attention because of their promising applications in optoelectronic devices. However, the development of ideal EC/EFC bifunctional materials is still a great challenge because of the poor integration of EC/EFC performances (optical contrast, response speed, and switching stability). Herein, we reported two novel diphenylamine-based mixed valence (MV) polyamides (S-HPA and P-HPA) with spirobifluorene (2,7-positions) and pyrene (1,6-positions) as bridged fluorescence units, respectively, showing impressive cyclability and fluorescence contrast with rapid switching. Through the formation of an effective electronic coupling between the two nitrogen centers using spirobifluorene/pyrene bridges, we demonstrated that different bridges have significant effects on the thermal and electrooptical characteristics of polyamides. In addition to lower fluorescence quantum yield and glass transition temperature, the S-HPA exhibited superior cyclability (contrast change <3.4%/14% over 500/300 cycles for EC/EFC switching), higher color/fluorescence contrast (64%/304%), and faster switching time (<2.6 s), mainly owing to the shorter conjugated length and more twisted configuration of the spirobifluorene bridge. The design principle of MV polymers with fluorophore bridges proposed here will be a promising way to realize high-performance EC/EFC devices and will also provide new insights into their future development and applications.

Abstract
Four aggregation-induced emission (AIE)- and electro-active cyanostilbene-based triphenylamine-containing derivatives with different substituents were synthesized to investigate their effects on the photoluminescence properties and electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) behavior of gel-type electrochromic devices (ECDs). The optical and photoluminescence properties of the obtained materials were influenced by the substituents, and revealed AIE-active characteristics, exhibiting stronger fluorescence intensity in the aggregated state than in solution. Consequently, the EFC devices could be fabricated by combining these AIE- and electro-active materials with cathodic EC heptyl viologen HV into the gel-type electrolyte system to enhance the emission intensity, on/off contrast ratio, and response capability.

Abstract
Two novel triphenylamine-based derivatives with dimethylamino substituents, N, N'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)- N, N'-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (NTPPA) and N, N'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)- N, N'-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NTPB), were readily prepared for investigating the optical and electrochromic behaviors. These two obtained materials were introduced into electrochromic devices accompanied with heptyl viologen (HV), and the devices demonstrate a high average coloration efficiency of 287 cm2/C and electrochemical stability. Besides, NTPB/HV was further used to fabricate electrofluorochromic devices with a gel type electrolyte, and exhibit a controllable and high photoluminescence contrast ratio ( Ioff/ Ion) of 32.12 from strong emission to truly dark by tuning the applied potential in addition to a short switching time of 4.9 s and high reversibility of 99% after 500 cycles.

Abstract
Fluorescent light modulation by small electric potentials has gained huge interest in the past few years. This phenomenon, called electrofluorochromism, is of the utmost importance for applications in optoelectronic devices. Huge efforts are being addressed to developing electrofluorochromic systems with improved performances. One of the most critical issue is their low cyclability, which hampers their widespread use. It mostly depends on the intrinsic reversibility of the electroactive/fluorophore molecular system and on device architecture. Here we show a novel fluorene-based mixed-valence electrofluorochromic system that allows direct electrofluorochromic switching and exhibits incomparable electrochemical reversibility and device cyclability of more than 10 000 cycles.

Abstract
Triphenylamine (TPA) and 4,4'-dimethoxy-triphenylamine (TPAOMe) derivatives were successfully linked with two high-performance AIEgens, triphenylethylene (TPE) and benzo[ b]thiophene-1,1-dioxide (BTO), to obtain four aggregation-induced emission and electro-active materials, TPETPA, BTOTPA, TPETPAOMe, and BTOTPAOMe. The effects on photoluminescence characteristics and electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) behaviors in cross-linking gel-type devices derived from the prepared materials were systematically investigated. Furthermore, heptyl viologen was introduced into the EFC devices to enhance EC performance including lower working potential, faster switching time, and superior stability.

Abstract
A novel and unexpected convenient one-pot synthesis of 1,2,3,4-thiatriazoles has been discovered while investigating the classical tetrazine "Pinner synthesis". The synthetic route starts from commercially-available nitrile derivatives and gives good to high yields (51-80 %) with no need to isolate any thioacylating agents. The crucial impact of the solvent on the outcome of the modified "Pinner synthesis" is moreover examined and discussed. Using this new synthetic route, a novel donor-acceptor thiatriazole derivative has been prepared, which exhibits prominent thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in both solution and film. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in methylcyclohexane (MCH) and Zeonex (a cyclo olefin polymer) in oxygen-free conditions were determined to be 76 and 99 %, respectively. This work provides an efficient and practical synthetic approach to functionalized 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole derivatives, and will noticeably facilitate the application of 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole as an electron acceptor in organic electronics.

Abstract
Because of the limitations of conventional metal-oxide-based electrodes, studies on organic redox-active materials as alternative electrodes for secondary batteries are emerging. However, reported organic electrode materials are still limited to a few kinds of organic redox groups. Therefore, the development of new redox-active groups for high-performance electrode materials is indispensable. Here, we evaluate s-tetrazine derivatives as a new electrode material in Li-ion batteries and study their charge/discharge mechanisms by ex situ XPS measurements. The porous carbon CMK-3 was introduced to encapsulate the s-tetrazines, which allowed 100 % utilization of the theoretical capacity and stable cycle performance of the s-tetrazines by preventing dissolution of the molecules into the electrolytes. This new class of redox-active group can pave the way for the next-generation of energy storage systems.

Abstract
A facile, efficient and metal-free synthetic approach to 3-monosubstituted unsymmetrical 1,2,4,5-tetrazines is presented. Dichloromethane (DCM) is for the first time recognized as a novel reagent in the synthetic chemistry of tetrazines. Using this novel approach 11 3-aryl/alkyl 1,2,4,5-tetrazines were prepared in excellent yields (up to 75 %). The mechanism of this new reaction, including the role of DCM in the tetrazine ring formation, has been investigated by 13 C labeling of DCM, and is also presented and discussed as well as the photophysical and electrochemical properties.

Abstract
The possibility of using a single electroactive and luminescent molecule both as a redox mediator and as a fluorophore in an experiment combining in situ Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) and epifluorescence microscopy was validated. The usual working modes of SECM, namely positive and negative feedback as well as generation-collection, were used and the fluorescence images, intensity and spectra were recorded for each configuration. The tip potential, tip-substrate distance and, in the case of a conducting substrate, the substrate potential are the parameters that are likely to control the fluorescence. It is shown that the tip can be used to switch on and off the luminescence and that the modulation amplitude maximum is sensitive to the nature of the substrate. Approach curves based on this fluorescence modulation amplitude can be obtained showing a higher sensitivity than the classical electrochemical ones.

Abstract
Electrofluorochromism has attracted great attention due to the intelligence optoelectronic and sensing applications. The intrinsically switchable fluorophores with high solid-state fluorescence are regarded as key for ideal electrofluorochromic materials. Here, we reported an AIE-active polyamide with diphenylamine and tetraphenylethylene units, showing high fluorescence quantum yield up to 69.1% for the solid polymer film and stable electrochemical cycling stability. The polyamide exhibited reversible color and emission switching even in hundreds of cycles, and the fluorescence on/off contrast ratio was determined up to 417, which is the highest value to our knowledge. Furthermore, as the response time is vital for the real-life applications, to speed up the response of electrofluorochromism, a porous polymer film was readily prepared through a facile method, notably exhibiting high fluorescence contrast, long-term stability and obviously improved response, due to the sharply increased surface area. Therefore, the AIE-functionalization combining the porous structure strategy will synergistically and dramatically improve the electrofluorochromic performance, which will also promote their practical applications in the near future.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive (such as voltage and/or light) fluorescence display systems have attracted particular attention in their promising fields of application. However, there are few examples of self-powered fluorescence display devices. Here we designed and fabricated a self-powered fluorescence display device based on a fast-charging/recharging battery. The specially designed battery was composed of a Prussian blue (PB) cathode and a magnesium metal anode with a high theoretical redox potential difference (∼2.8 V). Moreover, smartly adding a trace amount of NaClO in the electrolyte could realize oxidizing PW to PB ∼480 times faster than when oxidizing without NaClO, leading to the fast self-charging and high power density (maximum power density of 13.34 mW cm-2, about two to three orders of magnitude larger than previous bio-fuel cells) of the Mg/PB battery. Most importantly, PB was used as not only the cathodic catalyst but also as an electrochromic material, making it possible to construct a self-powered and rechargeable electrochromic fluorescence display with only two electrodes. Besides, fluorescent [Ru(bpy)3]2+-doped silica nanoparticles (Ru@SiO2), were selected as the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) donor to match PB (FRET acceptor). To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrated a self-powered and rechargeable electrochromic fluorescence display with only two electrodes for the first time.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Fluorinated Tetrazines Displaying a High Fluorescence Yield. J Fluoresc 2016; 26:1349-56. Abstract
Following the case of tetrazines substituted with perfluorinated alkyl chains, separated by two methylene groups from the tetrazine core, a new series of analogous tetrazines, but featuring only one methylene group between the fluorescent core and the perfluorinated chain, have been synthesized, and their photo-physical properties investigated. Their fluorescence quantum yields in acetonitrile are in same range than chloroalkoxytetrazines, which make them interesting candidates for light emission. Surprisingly, the quantum yields are lower with one methylene group, rather than two methylene groups separating the fluorinated chain from the emitting core, in the case of unsymmetrical compounds, while they are superior in the case of symmetrical ones. This unusual observation is discussed in the article.

Abstract
The fluorescent behavior of the electrofluorochromic devices (Type I) of greenish-yellow emitting P1 and blue emitting P2 can be reversibly switched between the nonfluorescent (oxidized) state and the fluorescent (neutral) state with a superb on/off ratio of 23.8 and 21.9, respectively. Moreover, a tunable electrofluorochromic device (Type II) based on two P1 and P2 polymeric layers that are coated individually on two independent ITO electrodes shows switchable blue-white-(greenish-yellow) multifluorescence states.
