Abstract
Chromophores that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (i.e., aggregation-induced emission luminogens [AIEgens]) emit intense fluorescence in their aggregated states, but show negligible emission as discrete molecular species in solution due to the changes in restriction and freedom of intramolecular motions. As solvent-swollen quasi-solids with both a compact phase and a free space, gels enable manipulation of intramolecular motions. Thus, AIE-active gels have attracted significant interest owing to their various distinctive properties and promising application potential. Herein, a comprehensive overview of AIE-active gels is provided. The fabrication strategies employed are detailed, and the applications of AIEgens are summarized. In addition, the gel functions arising from the AIE moieties are revealed, along with their structure-property relationships. Furthermore, the applications of AIE-active gels in diverse areas are illustrated. Finally, ongoing challenges and potential means to address them are discussed, along with future perspectives on AIE-active gels, with the overall aim of inspiring research on novel materials and ideas.

Abstract
Nucleophilic aromatic substitution has been highly para selective on a range of functionalized pentafluorobenzenes. Here, we demonstrate the utility of nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry for the preparation of fluorinated fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels. The molecular design, synthesis and photophysical performance of a new class of thermoreversible and fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels from para-alkoxy-functionalized fluorinated terphenyls are described. Both CuI-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling and nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry were used for the preparation of those highly fluorinated gelators in high yields and excellent purity via simple filtration, from the corresponding potassium fluorobenzoate salts and aryl iodides. Various fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls were prepared with various para terminal alkoxy tails. Those fluorinated terphenyls were characterized using X-ray crystallography, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as 1 H, 13 C, and 19 F nuclear magnetic resonance. UV-visible light absorbance and emission spectra of those new materials displayed a solvatochromic and solvatofluorochromic behaviour, respectively. Self-assembly of the produced fluorinated terphenyls occurred via cooperative π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions, which resulted in gelating various organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy displayed the formation of fibre-like nanostructures. The cytotoxicity of some selected fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls was explored.

Abstract
A covalently anchored and spatially confined organic polymer was formed in a layered compound with a surface-modified layer. The resultant anchored and confined polymer showed tunable photochemical properties with the incorporation of a variety of guest molecules originating from the specific incorporation states. The layer surface of an inorganic layered compound was modified by an organic molecule with vinyl groups. The precursor layered composite accommodated N-vinylcarbazole (VCz), a vinyl monomer, in the hydrophobic interlayer space. The introduction of VCz induced the simultaneous exfoliation of the layered structures and copolymerization with vinyl groups on the layer surface. The covalently anchored and spatially confined poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVCz) with tunable photochemical properties was formed in a layered structure. The present study shows the versatile potential of polymers with anchored and confined states in surface-functionalized layered composites.

Abstract
A supramolecular gel was fabricated through mixing of a cationic gelator with methyl orange. The addition of ATP into the gel caused a distinct gel-collapse, whereas ADP and AMP preserved the gel formation. This observation provided a simple visualized way to discriminate ATP from AMP and ADP.

Abstract
"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important green house gas. This is providing an incentive to develop new strategies to detect and capture CO2. Achieving both functions within a single molecular system represents an unmet challenge in terms of molecular design and could translate into enhanced ease of use. Here, we report an anion-activated chemosensor system, NAP-chol 1, that permits dissolved CO2 to be detected in organic media via simple color changes or through ratiometric differences in fluorescence intensity. NAP-chol 1 also acts as a super gelator for DMSO. The resulting gel is transformed into a homogeneous solution upon exposure to fluoride anions. Bubbling with CO2 regenerates the gel. Subsequent flushing with N2 or heating serves to release the CO2 and reform the sol form. This series of transformations is reversible and can be followed by easy-to-discern color changes. Thus, NAP-chol 1 allows for the capture and release of CO2 gas while acting as a three mode sensing system. In particular, it permits CO2 to be detected through reversible sol-gel transitions, simple changes in color, or ratiometric monitoring of the differences in the fluorescence features.

Abstract
A glutamide gelator, 1, was synthesized, and a weak emission enhancement was observed during its gelation. In addition, 1 could be an excellent scaffold for successfully embedding an energy acceptor, 2, into its aggregate to obtain highly efficient energy transfer. An amplification of the emission enhancement was observed in the two-component gels compared to that of the neat gel of 1 during gel formation. For example, 1 induced only a 2.5-fold increase in emission intensity, whereas a 23-fold enhanced emission could be observed in the two-component gel with only 1.6 mol % 2. Furthermore, two-component gels had an excited proton response. In systems with low acceptor concentrations, the hot solution red-shifted the fluorescence from blue to yellow upon the addition of a proton, which continuously blue-shifted with decreasing temperature to form the gel given that the binding of the gelator to the proton is weakened during coassembly. Moreover, the casting film formed by the two-component wet gel had an excellent response to volatile acids such as hydrochloric acid, trifluoroacetic acid, and so on and could be reversibly recovered by exposure to NH(3).
