Photochemical Synthesis of Nitriles from Alcohols

Nickel-catalyzed hydrocyanation of 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide gas is the predominant method for the synthesis of adiponitrile, which is an important precursor for polymer production. However, the use of fossil-derived alkenes raises environmental concerns, and hydrogen cyanide is highly volatile and extremely toxic. Herein, we report the use of biomass-derived 1,4-butanediol, as well as other primary alcohols, for photochemical synthesis of linear and branched nitriles and dinitriles, including adiponitrile, with 1,4-dicyanobenzene as the CN source. This mild, sustainable method does not require hydrogen cyanide gas or an air- or moisture-sensitive metal catalyst and is applicable for the production of dinitriles as precursors of diamines, which have potential utility for the development of novel polyamides.

Iron-Catalyzed, Light-Driven Decarboxylative Alkoxyamination

An iron-catalyzed visible-light driven decarboxylative alkoxyamination is disclosed. In the presence of FeBr2 and TEMPO, a large array of carboxylic acids including marketed drugs and biobased molecules is turned into the corresponding alkoxyamine derivatives. The versatility of the latter offers an entry towards molecular diversity generation from abundant starting materials and catalyst. Overall, this method proposes a unified and general approach for LMCT-based iron-catalyzed decarboxylative functionalization.

Competitive Valerate Binding Enables RuO2-Mediated Butene Electrosynthesis in Water

The (non)-Kolbe oxidation of valeric acid, sourced from a hydrolysis product of cellulose, provides a sustainable synthetic route to access value-added products, such as butene. An essential mechanistic step preceding product formation involves the oxidative and decarboxylative cleavage of a C-C bond. Yet, the role of the electrode surface in mediating this oxidative step remains an open question: the electron transfer can occur either via an inner-sphere or outer-sphere mechanism. Here, we report the electrochemical, in situ spectroscopic, computational, and reactivity studies of RuO2-mediated oxidative decarboxylation of valeric acid to butene in aqueous electrolytes. We find that carboxylates bind to RuO2 anode surfaces at potential values where decarboxylation products are observed. Our results are consistent with a reaction scheme where the competitive and catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is impeded by these bound carboxylate species while these species are inert toward butene formation. Our results implicate an outer-sphere electron transfer mechanism for decarboxylation where the surface chemistry of the RuO2 electrode serves to enable higher non-Kolbe reaction selectivity by suppressing the parasitic OER. Our findings delineate interfacial design principles for selective electrochemical systems that utilize water as the ultimate oxidant for sustainable decarboxylation.

Visible-Light-Induced Synthesis of Vinyl Sulfones via Decarboxylative Sulfonylation of Cinnamic Acids Using Sulfonylazides/p-Toluenesulfonylmethyl Isocyanide/β-Keto Sulfones

An efficient visible-light-induced synthesis of vinyl sulfones has been accomplished via decarboxylative sulfonylation of cinnamic acids using sulfonylazides, p-toluenesulfonylmethyl isocyanide, and β-keto sulfones as sulfonyl source, in the presence of inexpensive organic photocatalysts like rhodamine B and eosin Y. The reaction is facile, straightforward, and endowed with wide substrate scope and functional group tolerability.

Enhanced electrocatalytic biomass oxidation at low voltage by Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces

Challenges in direct catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived aldehyde and alcohol into acid with high activity and selectivity hinder the widespread biomass application. Herein, we demonstrate that a Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst with abundant Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces allows electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid with a selectivity near 100 % and 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid yield of 97.3% at 0.6 volts (versus a reversible hydrogen electrode) in 1 M KOH electrolyte under ambient conditions. The rate-determining step of the intermediate oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid is promoted by the increased OH species and low C-H activation energy barrier at Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces. Further, the Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces prevent the agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles during the reaction, greatly improving the stability of the catalyst. In this work, Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst can achieve 100% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural conversion and >90% 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid selectivity in a flow-cell and work stably over 200 h under a fixed cell voltage of 0.85 V.

Merging Quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones Excitation with Cobaloxime Catalysis: C3 Alkylation of Quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with Unactivated Alkyl Iodides and Carboxylic Acids under Light

Reported herein is a practical, economical, and efficient construction of 3-alkylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with alkyl carboxylic acids and alkyl iodides by quinoxalin-2(1H)-one excitation and cobaloxime catalysis. Primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides and carboxylic acids all could be efficiently transferred into target products with excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanism studies reveal that the quinoxalin-2(1H)-one derivatives could be directly excited and yield alkyl carbon radicals from alkyl carboxylic acids and alkyl iodides with the aid of the cobaloxime complex.

Synthesis and Performance of Bio-Based Amphoteric Surfactants

As the global surfactant market continues to expand, there is an increasing need to develop bio-based alternatives in the shift towards a circular economy. This study focuses on the synthesis of polar, amphoteric, amine-oxide surfactants starting from biomass-derived monosaccharides and demonstrating their potential in various applications. The synthesis involved a reductive amination of the sugars with an alkylamine and formaldehyde followed by oxidation to produce N-oxide surfactants. These bio-based surfactants exhibited promising properties, including high solubility, foamability, surface tension reduction, and critical micelle concentration. In particular, N-GalA1.10 and N-GalA1.12 showed comparable performance to commercial surfactants. Furthermore, these bio-based surfactants demonstrated significantly lower skin irritation potential when compared to petrochemical-derived counterparts like sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), making them potentially suitable for personal care products. The biodegradability assessment revealed that N-GalA1.12 exhibited good biodegradation, indicating its potential environmental compatibility. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of bio-based N-oxide surfactants derived from monosaccharides as sustainable and skin-friendly alternatives to traditional amphoteric surfactants, like cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB).

Reduction-Assisted Calcination Enhances the Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO and WO3 Nanoparticles in Biomass Conversion

Rising energy needs and environmental issues have prompted the creation of effective and affordable photocatalysts for converting biomass. Utilizing abundant biomass, oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) emerges as a method for generating high-value chemicals from biomass, offering an alternative to fossil fuels. We synthesized defect-engineered metal oxides (ZnO and WO3) by calcination with NaBH4 as a reducing agent. Atomic-level analyses identified oxygen vacancy defects induced by the reduction of metal ions within the metal oxide nanoparticles. Further analysis showed an unchanged band gap but an up to 4-fold increase in current density. This enhancement is attributed to the trapping of electrons in defect sites created during the calcination process. The formation of new electron donor states hindered photogenerated electron-hole recombination, enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of the metal oxide. The photocatalytic degradation yield of HMF was over 95%, and the selective organic products 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) were obtained without byproducts. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the photocatalytic conversion reaction rates were accelerated by up to 3.5-fold. Improved photocatalytic activity for HMF oxidation was achieved by introducing oxygen vacancy defects upon the reduction of metal ions within the metal oxides. Our results provide a promising approach for designing efficient photocatalysts.

Protocol for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using H and flow cells

Recently, there has been a growing interest in using sustainable energy to decrease lignin monomers to generate high-value-added products. Here, we present a protocol for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. We describe steps for catalyst preparation, performing electrocatalytic experiments, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, and in situ infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy testing. The synthesized catalyst used in this reaction exhibits enhanced selectivity and Faradaic efficiency in NaClO4 solution. Transition metal-free decarboxylative olefination of carboxylic acid salts

The cost-effective and efficient synthesis of alkenes is highly significant due to their extensive applications in both synthetic and polymer industries. A transition metal-free approach has been devised for the chemoselective olefination of carboxylic acid salts. This modular approach provides direct access to valuable electron-deficient styrenes in moderate to good yields. Detailed mechanistic studies suggest anionic decarboxylation is followed by halogen ion transfer. This halogen transfer leads to an umpolung of reactant electronics, allowing for a rate-limiting rebound elimination.

High-Performance One-Component Epoxy Adhesive Based on the Synergistic Effect of Lignin-Derived Triaryl-Imidazole and Phytic Acid

Latent curing agents are essential in the formulation of one-component epoxy resins, yet they are seldom derived from fully biobased chemicals. In the present work, a fully biobased latent curing agent for epoxy resins (BIMPA) was produced by synthesizing an ionic complex of lignin-derived triaryl-imidazole (BIM) and phytic acid (PA). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of BIM and PA, the one-component epoxy resin, composed of BIMPA and commercially available E51, exhibits a storage stability of over 90 days. Upon heating, the ionic complex undergoes decomposition, liberating the active imidazole to cure the precursor. The resulting epoxy resins exhibited a flexural modulus of 3.09 GPa, a flexural strength of 107.47 MPa, a notched izod impact strength of 2.47 kJ/m3, and a shear strength of 41.02 MPa. The outcome can provide an effective supplement for the development of biobased epoxy resins.

Room-temperature sulfur doped NiMoO4 with enhanced conductivity and catalytic activity for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media

Transition metal oxides have been acknowledged for their exceptional water splitting capabilities in alkaline electrolytes, however, their catalytic activity is limited by low conductivity. The introduction of sulfur (S) into nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) at room temperature leads to the formation of sulfur-doped NiMoO4 (S-NiMoO4), thereby significantly enhancing the conductivity and facilitating electron transfer in NiMoO4. Furthermore, the introduction of S effectively modulates the electron density state of NiMoO4 and facilitates the formation of highly active catalytic sites characterized by a significantly reduced hydrogen absorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) value of -0.09 eV. The electrocatalyst S-NiMoO4 exhibits remarkable catalytic performance in promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), displaying a significantly reduced overpotential of 84 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and maintaining excellent durability at 68 mA cm-2 for 10 h (h). Furthermore, by utilizing the anodic sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR) instead of the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the assembled electrolyzer employing S-NiMoO4 as both the cathode and anode need merely 0.8 V to achieve 105 mA cm-2, while simultaneously producing hydrogen gas (H2) and S monomer. This work paves the way for improving electron transfer and activating active sites of metal oxides, thereby enhancing their HER activity.

Valorization of Corn Straw for Production of Glucose by Two-Step Depolymerization

Depolymerization of the cellulose part in lignocellulose to glucose is a significant step for lignocellulose valorization. As one of the main by-products of agricultural biomass in crop-producing filed, valorization of corn straw has attracted considerable attention. In this study, a two-step depolymerizing strategy of high-pressure CO2-H2O pretreatment and oxidation-hydrolysis was applied for selective depolymerization of the cellulose component of corn straw to glucose production. Most part of the hemicellulose component could be removed through high-pressure CO2-H2O pretreatment in the presence of low concentration of acetic acid, and then as high as 32.2 % yield of glucose was achieved in water at 170 °C for 6 h without additional catalyst. The active acid sites generated during the partial oxidation of hydroxymethyl groups to carboxyl groups on glucose units of cellulose was shown to be crucial for the efficient valorization of corn straw for glucose production.

Promoter Effect of Pt on Zr Catalysts to Increase the Conversion of Furfural to γ-Valerolactone Using Batch and Continuous Flow Reactors: Influence of the Way of the Incorporation of the Pt Sites

The valorization of biomass and its transformation into fuels are highly interesting due to the abundance of biomass and its almost neutral carbon emissions. In this article, we show the production of γ-valerolactone (GVL), a valuable product, from furfural (FF), a compound that can be easily obtained from biomass. This FF to GVL transformation involves a catalytic cascade reaction with two hydrogenation steps. Pt and/or Zr supported on sepiolite catalysts have been prepared and tested in the FF transformation reaction. A physical mixture of a Zr-based and a Pt-based catalyst has reached a yield to GVL of ca. 50% after 16 h at 180 °C. This performance largely exceeds that obtained by each of the single Pt or single Zr metal catalysts independently, showing a strong synergistic effect. These data suggest that each metal (Pt and Zr) plays an important and complementary role in different reaction steps. Furthermore, the physical mixture appears to be much more efficient than bimetallic Pt/Zr catalysts synthesized with the same amount of metals. The role of the type of acidity and the oxidation state of the surface platinum species on the catalytic performance has been discussed. Moreover, this reaction has been carried out in batch and continuous flow reactors, and a comparative study between the two operation modes has been undertaken. A certain correlation between the catalytic results obtained by both operation modes has been found.

Solar-Driven Biomass Reforming for Hydrogen Generation: Principles, Advances, and Challenges

Hydrogen (H2) has emerged as a clean and versatile energy carrier to power a carbon-neutral economy for the post-fossil era. Hydrogen generation from low-cost and renewable biomass by virtually inexhaustible solar energy presents an innovative strategy to process organic solid waste, combat the energy crisis, and achieve carbon neutrality. Herein, the progress and breakthroughs in solar-powered H2 production from biomass are reviewed. The basic principles of solar-driven H2 generation from biomass are first introduced for a better understanding of the reaction mechanism. Next, the merits and shortcomings of various semiconductors and cocatalysts are summarized, and the strategies for addressing the related issues are also elaborated. Then, various bio-based feedstocks for solar-driven H2 production are reviewed with an emphasis on the effect of photocatalysts and catalytic systems on performance. Of note, the concurrent generation of value-added chemicals from biomass reforming is emphasized as well. Meanwhile, the emerging photo-thermal coupling strategy that shows a grand prospect for maximally utilizing the entire solar energy spectrum is also discussed. Further, the direct utilization of hydrogen from biomass as a green reductant for producing value-added chemicals via organic reactions is also highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of photoreforming biomass toward hydrogen are envisioned.

Recent advances in bio-based production of top platform chemical, succinic acid: an alternative to conventional chemistry

Succinic acid (SA) is one of the top platform chemicals with huge applications in diverse sectors. The presence of two carboxylic acid groups on the terminal carbon atoms makes SA a highly functional molecule that can be derivatized into a wide range of products. The biological route for SA production is a cleaner, greener, and promising technological option with huge potential to sequester the potent greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. The recycling of renewable carbon of biomass (an indirect form of CO2), along with fixing CO2 in the form of SA, offers a carbon-negative SA manufacturing route to reduce atmospheric CO2 load. These attractive attributes compel a paradigm shift from fossil-based to microbial SA manufacturing, as evidenced by several commercial-scale bio-SA production in the last decade. The current review article scrutinizes the existing knowledge and covers SA production by the most efficient SA producers, including several bacteria and yeast strains. The review starts with the biochemistry of the major pathways accumulating SA as an end product. It discusses the SA production from a variety of pure and crude renewable sources by native as well as engineered strains with details of pathway/metabolic, evolutionary, and process engineering approaches for enhancing TYP (titer, yield, and productivity) metrics. The review is then extended to recent progress on separation technologies to recover SA from fermentation broth. Thereafter, SA derivatization opportunities via chemo-catalysis are discussed for various high-value products, which are only a few steps away. The last two sections are devoted to the current scenario of industrial production of bio-SA and associated challenges, along with the author's perspective.

4-Vinyl Guaiacol: A Key Intermediate for Biobased Polymers

In order to contribute to the shift from petro-based chemistry to biobased chemistry, necessary to minimize the environmental impacts of the chemical industry, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol (4-vinyl guaiacol, 4VG) was used to synthesize a platform of biobased monomers. Thus, nine biobased monomers were successfully prepared. The synthesis procedures were investigated through the green metrics calculations in order to quantify the sustainability of our approaches. Their radical homopolymerization in toluene solution initiated by 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) was studied and the effect of residual 4VG as a radical inhibitor on the kinetics of polymerization was also explored. The new homopolymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography and thermal analyses (dynamical scanning calorimetry DSC, thermal gravimetric analysis TGA). By varying the length of the alkyl ester or ether group of the 4VG derivatives, homopolymers with Tg ranging from 117 °C down to 5 °C were obtained. These new biobased monomers could be implemented in radical copolymerization as substitutes to petro-based monomers to decrease the carbon footprint of the resulting copolymers for various applications.

Electrocatalytic Glycerol Conversion: A Low-Voltage Pathway to Efficient Carbon-Negative Green Hydrogen and Value-Added Chemical Production

Electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GLYOR) could be a promising way to use the abundantly available glycerol for production of value-added chemicals and fuels. Completely avoiding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with GLYOR is an evolving strategy to reduce the overall cell potential and generate value-added chemicals and fuels on both the anode and cathode. We demonstrate the morphology-controlled palladium nanocrystals, afforded by colloidal chemistry, and their established morphology-dependent GLYOR performance. Although it is known that controlling the morphology of an electrocatalyst can modulate the activity and selectivity of the products, still it is a relatively underexplored area for many reactions, including GLYOR. Among nanocube (Pd-NC), truncated octahedron (Pd-TO), spherical and polycrystalline (Pd-PC) morphologies, the Pd-NC electrocatalyst deposited on a Ni foam exhibits the highest glycerol conversion (85%) along with 42% glyceric acid selectivity at a low applied potential of 0.6 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) in 0.1 M glycerol and 1 M KOH at ambient temperature. Owing to the much favorable thermodynamics of GLYOR on the Pd-NC surface, the assembled electrolyzer requires an electricity input of only ∼3.7 kWh/m3 of H2 at a current density of 100 mA/cm2, in contrast to the requirement of ≥5 kWh/m3 of H2 with an alkaline/PEM electrolyzer. Sustainability has been successfully demonstrated at 10 and 50 mA/cm2 and up to 120 h with GLYOR in water and simulated seawater.

The role of glycosylation in non-productive adsorption of cellulase to lignin isolated from pretreated corn stover

Glycosylation, a general post-translational modification for fungal cellulase, has been shown to affect cellulase binding to its substrate. However, the exact impact of glycosylation on cellulase-lignin interaction remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the lignin isolated from tetrahydrofuran-pretreated corn stover exhibits strong adsorption capability to cellulase due to its negatively charged and porous structure. For the cellulases with varying glycosylation levels, the less-glycosylated protein showed high adsorption capability to lignin, and that trend was observed for the main cellulase components secreted by Penicillium oxilicum, including endoglucanase PoCel5B, cellobiohydrolase PoCel7A-2, and β-glucosidase PoBgl1. Additionally, N-glycan sites and motifs were examined using mass spectrometry, and protein structures with N-glycans were constructed, where PoBgl1 and PoCel7A-2 contained 13 and 1 glycosylated sites respectively. The results of molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the N-glycans impacted on the solvent-accessible surface area and secondary structure of protein, and the binding conformation of lignin fragment on cellulase, resulting in a decrease in binding energy (14 kcal/mol for PoBgl1 and 13 kcal/mol for PoCel7A-2), particularly for van der Waals and electrostatic interaction. Those findings suggested that glycosylation negatively impacted the lignin-cellulase interaction, providing a theoretical basis for the rational engineering of enzymes to reduce lignin-enzyme interaction.

Selective glucose electro-oxidation catalyzed by TEMPO on graphite felt

Long-term electrolyses of glucose in a potassium carbonate (K2CO3) aqueous electrolyte have been performed on graphite felt electrodes with TEMPO as a homogeneous catalyst. The influences of the operating conditions (initial concentrations of glucose, TEMPO, and K2CO3 along with applied anode potential) on the conversion, selectivity toward gluconate/glucarate, and faradaic efficiency were assessed first. Then, optimizations of the conversion, selectivity, and faradaic efficiency were performed using design of experiments based on the L9 (34) Taguchi table, which resulted in 84% selectivity toward gluconate with 71% faradaic efficiency for up to 79% glucose conversion. Side products such as glucaric acid were also obtained when the applied potential exceeded 1.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode.

Electrocatalytic reduction of furfural to furfuryl alcohol using carbon nanofibers supported zinc cobalt bimetallic oxide with surface-derived zinc vacancies in alkaline medium

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) reduction provides an environment-friendly alternative to conventional method for the upgrade of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. At present, exploring superior catalysts with high activity and selectivity, figuring out the reduction mechanism in aqueous alkaline environment are urgent. In this work, zinc cobalt bimetallic oxide (ZnMn2O4) with surface-derived Zn2+ vacancies supported by carbon nanofibers (d-ZnMn2O4-C) was fabricated. The d-ZnMn2O4-C exhibited excellent performance in electrocatalytic reduction of furfural, high furfuryl alcohol yield (49461.1 ± 228 µmol g-1) and Faradaic efficiency (95.5 ± 0.5 %) was obtained. In-depth research suggested that carbon nanofiber may strongly promoted the production of adsorbed hydrogen (Hads), and Zn2+ vacancies may significantly lowered the energy barrier of furfural reduction to furfuryl alcohol, the synergistic effect between carbon nanofiber and d-ZnMn2O4 probably facilitated the reaction between Hads and furfuryl alcohol radical, thereby promoting the formation of furfuryl alcohol. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was clarified by inhibitor coating and isotope experiments, the results of which revealed that the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol on d-ZnMn2O4-C followed both ECH and direct electroreduction mechanism.

Preparation and Characterization of Date Palm Bio-Oil Modified Phenolic Foam

In this work, the potential of biomass-derived date palm bio-oil as a partial substitute for phenol in the phenolic resin was evaluated. Date palm bio-oils derived from date palm were used for the partial substitution of phenol in the preparation of phenolic foam (PF) insulation materials. Date palm waste material was processed using pyrolysis at 525 °C to produce bio-oil rich in phenolic compounds. The bio-oil was used to partially replace phenol in the synthesis of phenolic resin, which was subsequently used to prepare foams. The resulting changes in the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the foams were studied. The substituted foams exhibited 93%, 181%, and 40% improvement in compressive strength with 10%, 15%, and 20% bio-oil substitution, respectively. Due to the incorporation of biomass waste material, the partial reduction in phenol uses, and the favorable properties, the date palm bio-oil substituted phenolic foams are considered more environmentally benign alternatives to traditional phenolic foams.

A silver-mediated radical process of β-keto sulfones for the synthesis of 2,3-diacyl furans

A facile and efficient method for constructing 2,3-diacyl trisubstituted furans via a silver-mediated radical process of β-keto sulfones is developed. The reaction mechanism has been carefully investigated, revealing that the transformation proceeds through a radical pathway, leading to moderate to good yields of desired products.

Recent Advances in Reversible Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Systems: From Hydrogen Carriers to Catalysts

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have gained significant attention for large-scale hydrogen storage due to their remarkable gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity (HSC) and compatibility with existing oil and gas transportation networks for long-distance transport. However, the practical application of reversible LOHC systems has been constrained by the intrinsic thermodynamic properties of hydrogen carriers and the performances of associated catalysts in the (de)hydrogenation cycles. To overcome these challenges, thermodynamically favored carriers, high-performance catalysts, and catalytic procedures need to be developed. Here, significant advances in recent years have been summarized, primarily centered on regular LOHC systems catalyzed by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, including dehydrogenative aromatization of cycloalkanes to arenes and N-heterocyclics to N-heteroarenes, as well as reverse hydrogenation processes. Furthermore, with the development of metal complexes for dehydrogenative coupling, a new family of reversible LOHC systems based on alcohols is described that can release H2 under relatively mild conditions. Finally, views on the next steps and challenges in the field of LOHC technology are provided, emphasizing new resources for low-cost hydrogen carriers, high-performance catalysts, catalytic technologies, and application scenarios.

Decarboxylative Radical Sulfilimination via Photoredox, Copper, and Brønsted Base Catalysis

Sulfilimines, the aza-variants of sulfoxides, are key structural motifs in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals; and sulfilimine synthesis is therefore important in organic chemistry. However, methods for radical sulfilimination remain elusive, and as a result, the structural diversity of currently available sulfilimines is limited. Herein, we report the first protocol for decarboxylative radical sulfilimination reactions between sulfenamides and N-hydroxyphthalimide esters of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl carboxylic acids, which were achieved via a combination of photoredox, copper, and Brønsted base catalysis. This novel protocol provided a wide variety of sulfilimines, in addition to serving as an efficient route for the synthesis of S-alkyl/S-aryl homocysteine sulfilimines and S-(4-methylphenyl) homocysteine sulfoximine. Moreover, it could be used for late-stage introduction of a sulfilimine group into structurally complex molecules, thereby avoiding the need to preserve labile organosulfur moieties through multistep synthetic sequences. A mechanism involving photocatalytic substrate transformation and copper-mediated C(sp3 )-S bond formation is proposed.

Closing the Gap: Towards a Fully Continuous and Self-Regulated Kolbe Electrosynthesis

In this article, we address the transition of the Kolbe electrolysis of valeric acid (VA) to n-octane as an exemplary electrosynthesis process from a batch reaction to a continuous, self-regulated process. Based on a systematic assessment of chemical boundary conditions and sustainability aspects, we propose a continuous electrosynthesis including a simple product separation and electrolyte recirculation, as well as an online-pH-controlled VA feeding. We demonstrate how essential performance parameters such as product selectivity (S) and coulombic efficiency (CE) are significantly improved by the transition from batch to a continuous process. Thus, the continuous and pH-controlled electrolysis of a 1 M valeric acid, starting pH 6.0, allowed a constantly high selectivity of around 47 % and an average Coulomb efficiency about 52 % throughout the entire experimental duration. Under otherwise identical conditions, the conventional batch operation suffered from lower and strongly decreasing performance values (Sn-octane, 60min =10.4 %, Sn-octane, 240min =1.3 %; CEn-octane, 60min =7.1 %, CEn-octane, 240min =0.5 %). At the same time, electrolyte recirculation significantly reduces wastes and limits the use of electrolyte components.

Catalytic Conversion of Levulinic Acid to Pyrrolidone under Mild Conditions with Disordered Mesoporous Silica-Supported Pt Catalyst

Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) into high-valued 5-methylpyrrolidones has become an attractive case in studies of biomass utilization. Herein, we developed a disordered mesoporous Pt/MNS catalyst for this reductive amination process under room temperature and atmospheric pressure of hydrogen. The disordered mesoporous structures in support of Pt/MNS catalyst led the formation of highly dispersed Pt species via confinement effect, providing high specific area for enhancing the catalytic sites. With the synergistic effect between highly dispersed Pt species and mesoporous structures, 5-methylpyrrolidones were successfully synthesized from biomass-derived LA and primary amines with high selectivity. Mechanism studies indicated that introducing protonic acid would promote the reductive-amination process, and enamine intermediates could be detected during the in-situ DRIFT tests. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed that the hydrogenation of enamine intermediate was more accessible than that of imide intermediates, leading the excellent performance of the Pt/MNS catalyst. This work provided a green method to produce 5-methylpyrrolidone and revealed the impact of catalyst structural characteristics on the reaction process.

Innovative parallel synthesis of 5-nonanone and furfural from lignocellulosic biomass accompanied by deep economic analysis

An integrated strategy is developed to utilize all three primary components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) of lignocellulosic biomass for the coproduction of hydrocarbon fuel (5-nonanone) and bio-chemicals (furfural and high purity lignin). After biomass fractionation, (1) 5-nonanone is produced with high yield of 89% using cellulose-derived γ-valerolactone (GVL), which can potentially serve as a platform molecule for the production of liquid hydrocarbon fuels for the transportation sector; (2) furfural, a valuable platform chemical, is produced using hemicellulose; and (3) production of high-purity lignin, which can be used to produce carbon foams or battery anodes. Separation subsystems are designed to effectively recover the solvents for reuse in the conversion processes, which ultimately improves the economic feasibility of the integrated process, resulting in achieving lower minimum selling price (MSP) of $5.47 GGE-1 for 5-nonanone compared to market price. Heat pump is introduced to perform heat integration, which reduces utility requirements more than 85%. Finally, a wide range of techno-economic analysis is performed to highlight the major cost and technological drivers of the integrated process.

Nopadiene: A Pinene-Derived Cyclic Diene as a Styrene Substitute for Fully Biobased Thermoplastic Elastomers

The bicyclic 1,2-substituted, 1,3-diene monomer nopadiene (1R,5S)-2-ethenyl-6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene was successfully polymerized by anionic and catalytic polymerization. Nopadiene is produced either through a facile one-step synthesis from myrtenal via Wittig-olefination or via a scalable two-step reaction from nopol (10-hydroxymethylene-2-pinene). Both terpenoids originate from the renewable β-pinene. The living anionic polymerization of nopadiene in apolar and polar solvents at 25 °C using organolithium initiators resulted in homopolymers with well-controlled molar masses in the range of 5.6-103.4 kg·mol-1 (SEC, PS calibration) and low dispersities (Đ) between 1.06 and 1.18. By means of catalytic polymerization with Me4CpSi(Me)2NtBuTiCl2 and (Flu)(Pyr)CH2Lu(CH2TMS)2(THF), the 1,4 and 3,4- microstructures of nopadiene are accessible in excellent selectivity. In pronounced contrast to other 1,3-dienes, the rigid polymers of the sterically demanding nopadiene showed an elevated glass temperature, Tg,∞ = 160 °C (in the limit of very high molar mass, Mn). ABA triblock copolymers with a central polymyrcene block and myrcene content of 60-75 mol %, with molar masses of 100-200 kg/mol were prepared by living anionic polymerization of the pinene-derivable monomers nopadiene and myrcene. This diene copolymerization resulted in thermoplastic elastomers displaying nanophase separation at different molar ratios (DSC, SAXS) and an upper service temperature about 30 K higher than that for traditional petroleum-derived styrenic thermoplastic elastomers due to the high glass temperature of polynopadiene. The materials showed good thermal stability at elevated temperatures under nitrogen (TGA), promising tensile strength and ultimate elongation of up to 1600%.

Biomass directional pyrolysis based on element economy to produce high-quality fuels, chemicals, carbon materials - A review

Biomass is regarded as the only carbon-containing renewable energy source and has performed an increasingly important role in the gradual substitution of conventional fossil energy, which also contributes to the goals of carbon neutrality. In the past decade, the academic field has paid much greater attention to the development of biomass pyrolysis technologies. However, most biomass conversion technologies mainly derive from the fossil fuel industry, and it must be noticed that the large element component difference between biomass and traditional fossil fuels. Thus, it's necessary to develop biomass directional pyrolysis technology based on the unique element distribution of biomass for realizing enrichment target element (i.e., element economy). This article provides a broad review of biomass directional pyrolysis to produce high-quality fuels, chemicals, and carbon materials based on element economy. The C (carbon) element economy of biomass pyrolysis is realized by the production of high-performance carbon materials from different carbon sources. For efficient H (hydrogen) element utilization, high-value hydrocarbons could be obtained by the co-pyrolysis or catalytic pyrolysis of biomass and cheap hydrogen source. For improving the O (oxygen) element economy, different from the traditional hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, the high content of O in biomass would also become an advantage because biomass is an appropriate raw material for producing oxygenated liquid additives. Based on the N (nitrogen) element economy, the recent studies on preparing N-containing chemicals (or N-rich carbon materials) are reviewed. Moreover, the feasibility of the biomass poly-generation industrialization and the suitable process for different types of target products are also mentioned. Moreover, the enviro-economic assessment of representative biomass pyrolysis technologies is analyzed. Finally, the brief challenges and perspectives of biomass pyrolysis are provided.

Progress on quantum dot photocatalysts for biomass valorization

Biomass with abundant reproducible carbon resource holds great promise as an intriguing substitute for fossil fuels in the manufacture of high-value-added chemicals and fuels. Photocatalytic biomass valorization using inexhaustible solar energy enables to accurately break desired chemical bonds or selectively functionalize particular groups, thus emerging as an extremely creative and low carbon cost strategy for relieving the dilemma of the global energy. Quantum dots (QDs) are an outstandingly dynamic class of semiconductor photocatalysts because of their unique properties, which have achieved significant successes in various photocatalytic applications including biomass valorization. In this review, the current development rational design for QDs photocatalytic biomass valorization effectively is highlighted, focusing on the principles of tuning their particle size, structure, and surface properties, with special emphasis on the effect of the ligands for selectively broken chemical bonds (C─O, C─C) of biomass. Finally, the present issues and possibilities within that exciting field are described.

Advances in Biocarbon and Soft Material Assembly for Enthalpy Storage: Fundamentals, Mechanisms, and Multimodal Applications

High-value-added biomass materials like biocarbon are being actively pursued integrating them with soft materials in a broad range of advanced renewable energy technologies owing to their advantages, such as lightweight, relatively low-cost, diverse structural engineering applications, and high energy storage potential. Consequently, the hybrid integration of soft and biomass-derived materials shall store energy to mitigate intermittency issues, primarily through enthalpy storage during phase change. This paper introduces the recent advances in the development of natural biomaterial-derived carbon materials in soft material assembly and its applications in multidirectional renewable energy storage. Various emerging biocarbon materials (biochar, carbon fiber, graphene, nanoporous carbon nanosheets (2D), and carbon aerogel) with intrinsic structures and engineered designs for enhanced enthalpy storage and multimodal applications are discussed. The fundamental design approaches, working mechanisms, and feature applications, such as including thermal management and electromagnetic interference shielding, sensors, flexible electronics and transparent nanopaper, and environmental applications of biocarbon-based soft material composites are highlighted. Furthermore, the challenges and potential opportunities of biocarbon-based composites are identified, and prospects in biomaterial-based soft materials composites are presented.

Visible Light Induced Copper-Catalyzed Enantioselective Deaminative Arylation of Amino Acid Derivatives Assisted by Phenol

The exploration of value-added conversions of naturally abundant amino acids has received considerable attention from the synthetic community. Compared with the well-established asymmetric decarboxylative transformation, the asymmetric deaminative transformation of amino acids still remains a formidable challenge, mainly due to the lack of effective strategies for the C-N bond activation and the potential incompatibility with chiral catalysts. Here, we disclose a photoinduced Cu-catalyzed asymmetric deaminative coupling reaction of amino acids with arylboronic acids. This new protocol provides a series of significant chiral phenylacetamides in generally good yields and excellent stereoselectivity under mild and green conditions (42-85 % yields, up to 97 % ee). Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations were performed to reveal the crucial role of additional phenols in improving catalytic efficiency and enantiocontrol.

Valeric Biofuels from Biomass-Derived γ-Valerolactone: A Critical Overview of Production Processes

This review analyzes critically the production of valeric biofuels from γ-valerolactone, a relevant biomass-derived platform molecule. Initially, the main properties of valeric esters as fuels for spark- and compression-ignition engines are summarized. Then, catalytic routes to valeric esters from γ-valerolactone are meticulously analyzed, describing the acid- and metal-catalyzed reactions taking part in the tandem catalysis. Only works focused on the production of the valeric biofuels were considered, excluding the cases where these esters were observed in minor amounts or as byproducts. The role of the appropriate selection of the support, catalytic species, catalyst preparation and experimental conditions on the valeric ester productivity are thoroughly commented. Finally, some concluding remarks and perspectives are given, mentioning the areas where additional efforts must be done in order to turn the dream of a massive and renewable valeric biofuel production into a reality.

Global trends and future prospects of lactic acid production from lignocellulosic biomass

Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) stands as a substantial and sustainable resource capable of addressing energy and environmental challenges. This study employs bibliometric analysis to investigate research trends in lactic acid (LA) production from LCB spanning the years 1991 to 2022. The analysis reveals a consistent growth trajectory with minor fluctuations in LA production from LCB. Notably, there's a significant upswing in publications since 2009. Bioresource Technology and Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology emerge as the top two journals with extensive contributions in the realm of LA production from LCB. China takes a prominent position in this research domain, boasting the highest total publication count (736), betweenness centrality value (0.30), and the number of collaborating countries (42), surpassing the USA and Japan by a considerable margin. The author keywords analysis provides valuable insights into the core themes in LA production from LCB. Furthermore, co-citation reference analysis delineates four principal domains related to LA production from LCB, with three associated with microbial conversion and one focused on chemical catalytic conversion. Additionally, this study examines commonly used LCB, microbial LA producers, and compares microbial fermentation to chemical catalytic conversion for LCB-based LA production, providing comprehensive insights into the current state of this field and suggesting future research directions.

Substituted anilides from chitin-based 3-acetamido-furfural

The synthesis of aromatic compounds from biomass-derived furans is a key strategy in the pursuit of a sustainable economy. Within this field, a Diels-Alder/aromatization cascade reaction with chitin-based furans is emerging as a powerful tool for the synthesis of nitrogen-containing aromatics. In this study we present the conversion of chitin-based 3-acetamido-furfural (3A5F) into an array of di- and tri-substituted anilides in good to high yields (62-90%) via a hydrazone mediated Diels-Alder/aromatization sequence. The addition of acetic anhydride expands the dienophile scope and improves yields. Moreover, replacing the typically used dimethyl hydrazone with its pyrrolidine analogue, shortens reaction times and further increases yields. The hydrazone auxiliary is readily converted into either an aldehyde or a nitrile group, thereby providing a plethora of functionalized anilides. The developed procedure was also applied to 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF) to successfully prepare a phthalimide.

Selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation of lignocellulose-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with superior productivities

Recently, valorization of biomass to value-added chemicals has drawn increasing attention due to carbon neutrality and sustainability. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural is an important lignocellulose-derived biomass molecule. Herein, we have demonstrated the efficient electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to value-added 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan. An optimized electrolyzer with a highly electrolyte-permeable Pd cathode well balanced the selectivity, faradaic efficiency, and productivity. We have achieved high selectivity (97%) and faradaic efficiency (72%) at 50 mA cm-2 current density, and a record high productivity of 0.923 mmol cm-2·h-1 at 100 mA cm-2 current density, ∼2 times advanced compared with the best productivity in prior reports. We applied in situ infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy to investigate the electrode-potential-dependent reaction pathways and mechanism, confirming that the highly selective hydrogenation of HMF is due to the tilted adsorption geometry through carbonyl group bonding to the surface of electrode. This work offers an opportunity for the sustainable electrocatalytic valorization of renewable lignocellulose-derived biomass with superior productivities approaching industrial level.

Synthesis of piperidines and pyridine from furfural over a surface single-atom alloy Ru1CoNP catalyst

The sustainable production of value-added N-heterocycles from available biomass allows to reduce the reliance on fossil resources and creates possibilities for economically and ecologically improved synthesis of fine and bulk chemicals. Herein, we present a unique Ru1CoNP/HAP surface single-atom alloy (SSAA) catalyst, which enables a new type of transformation from the bio-based platform chemical furfural to give N-heterocyclic piperidine. In the presence of NH3 and H2, the desired product is formed under mild conditions with a yield up to 93%. Kinetic studies show that the formation of piperidine proceeds via a series of reaction steps. Initially, in this cascade process, furfural amination to furfurylamine takes place, followed by hydrogenation to tetrahydrofurfurylamine (THFAM) and then ring rearrangement to piperidine. DFT calculations suggest that the Ru1CoNP SSAA structure facilitates the direct ring opening of THFAM resulting in 5-amino-1-pentanol which is quickly converted to piperidine. The value of the presented catalytic strategy is highlighted by the synthesis of an actual drug, alkylated piperidines, and pyridine.

Nickel-Catalyzed Asymmetric Decarboxyarylation with NHP Esters of α-Amino Acid to Chiral Benzylamines

A nickel-catalyzed asymmetric decarboxyarylation of NHP esters via reductive cross-coupling has been established. Utilizing the NHP of amino acid esters as radical precursors furnishes a new protocol in which structurally diverse chiral benzylamines could be accessible. This method has demonstrated excellent catalytic efficiency, high enantioselective control, mild conditions, and good functional group tolerance, thus enabling the late-stage modification of bioactive molecules and pharmaceuticals.

Synthesis and catalytic activity of well-defined Co(I) complexes based on NHC-phosphane pincer ligands

A new methodology for the preparation of Co(I)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes, namely, [Co(PCNHCP)(CO)2][Co(CO)4] (1) and [Co(PCNHCP)(CO)2]BF4 (2), has been developed (PCNHCP = 1,3-bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)ethyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene). Both complexes can be straightforwardly prepared by direct reaction of their parent imidazolium salts with the Co(0) complex Co2(CO)8. Complex 1 efficiently catalyses the reductive amination of furfural and levulinic acid employing silanes as reducing agents under mild conditions. Furfural has been converted into a variety of secondary and tertiary amines employing dimethyl carbonate as the solvent, while levulinic acid has been converted into pyrrolidines under solventless conditions. Dehydrocoupling of the silane to give polysilanes has been observed to occur as a side reaction of the hydrosilylation process.

Radical-Mediated Photocatalysis for Lignocellulosic Biomass Conversion into Value-Added Chemicals and Hydrogen: Facts, Opportunities and Challenges

Photocatalytic biomass conversion into high-value chemicals and fuels is considered one of the hottest ongoing research and industrial topics toward sustainable development. In short, this process can cleave Cβ -O/Cα -Cβ bonds in lignin to aromatic platform chemicals, and further conversion of the polysaccharides to other platform chemicals and H2 . From the chemistry point of view, the optimization of the unique cooperative interplay of radical oxidation species (which are activated via molecular oxygen species, ROSs) and substrate-derived radical intermediates by appropriate control of their type and/or yield is key to the selective production of desired products. Technically, several challenges have been raised that face successful real-world applications. This review aims to discuss the recently reported mechanistic pathways toward selective biomass conversion through the optimization of ROSs behavior and materials/system design. On top of that, through a SWOT analysis, we critically discussed this technology from both chemistry and technological viewpoints to help the scientists and engineers bridge the gap between lab-scale and large-scale production.

Development of bioenergy technologies: A scientometric analysis

Bioenergy has the potential to substitute the current demand for fossil fuels in various applications. Recovering energy from bio-based materials due to environmental considerations has been adopted as a policy objective by governments and international organizations, which led to both vast financial investment and scientific research, especially in the last two decades. So far, various feedstocks and technologies have been scrutinised by the research community, although not all of them are commercially adopted due to sustainability considerations. This study employs scientometric analysis to survey the progress of scientific development in the field of bioenergy from 1966 to 2022, using ten parameters including publication year, type of document, categories, countries, affiliations, document citations, co-authorship, author citation networks, journal citation networks, and keywords. A total of 51,905 scientific documents were collected from the Web of Science, involving more than 96,000 authors from 162 countries. The dispersion of studies followed an ascending distribution with a sharp increase in the second half of the 2000s. The evolution of keywords in terms of burst strength confirmed the advancements of technologies from primary first-generation to advanced fourth-generation bioenergies. Based on the evolution of science in this area, it is concluded that integrated sustainability assessment studies, covering technical, economical, environmental, and social aspects, are needed to bridge the gap between abundant theoretical endeavours and limited commercial use of this energy source.

Selective Adsorption Behavior Modulation on Nickel Selenide by Heteroatom Implantation and Heterointerface Construction Achieves Efficient Co-production of H2 and Formate

Glycerol-assisted hybrid water electrolysis is a potential strategy to achieve energy-efficient hydrogen production. However, the design of an efficient catalyst for the specific reaction is still a key challenge, which suffers from the barrier of regulating the adsorption characteristics of distinctive intermediates in different reactions. Herein, a novel rationale that achieves selective adsorption behavior modulation for self-supported nickel selenide electrode by heteroatom implantation and heterointerface construction through electrodeposition is developed, which can realize nichetargeting optimization on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), respectively. Specifically, the prepared Mo-doped Ni3 Se2 electrode exhibits superior catalytic activity for HER, while the NiSe-Ni3 Se2 electrode exhibits high Faradaic efficiency (FE) towards formate production for GOR. A two-electrode electrolyzer exhibits superb activity that only needs an ultralow cell voltage of 1.40 V to achieve 40 mA cm-2 with a high FE (97%) for formate production. Theoretical calculation unravels that the introduction of molybdenum contributes to the deviation of the d-band center of Ni3 Se2 from the Fermi level, which is conducive to hydrogen desorption. Meanwhile, the construction of the heterojunction induces the distortion of the surface structure of nickel selenide, which exposes highly active nickel sites for glycerol adsorption, thus contributing to the excellent electrocatalytic performance.

Synthesis, Properties, and Biomedical Application of Dicationic Gemini Surfactants with Dodecane Spacer and Carbamate Fragments

A synthesis procedure and aggregation properties of a new homologous series of dicationic gemini surfactants with a dodecane spacer and two carbamate fragments (N,N'-dialkyl-N,N'-bis(2-(ethylcarbamoyloxy)ethyl)-N,N'-dimethyldodecan-1,6-diammonium dibromide, n-12-n(Et), where n = 10, 12, 14) were comprehensively described. The critical micelle concentrations of gemini surfactants were obtained using tensiometry, conductometry, spectrophotometry, and fluorimetry. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and micellization, i.e., maximum surface excess (Гmax), the surface area per surfactant molecule (Amin), degree of counterion binding (β), and Gibbs free energy of micellization (∆Gmic), were calculated. Functional activity of the surfactants, including the solubilizing capacity toward Orange OT and indomethacin, incorporation into the lipid bilayer, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal and fungicidal concentrations, was determined. Synthesized gemini surfactants were further used for the modification of liposomes dual-loaded with α-tocopherol and donepezil hydrochloride for intranasal treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The obtained liposomes have high stability (more than 5 months), a significant positive charge (approximately + 40 mV), and a high degree of encapsulation efficiency toward rhodamine B, α-tocopherol, and donepezil hydrochloride. Korsmeyer-Peppas, Higuchi, and first-order kinetic models were used to process the in vitro release curves of donepezil hydrochloride. Intranasal administration of liposomes loaded with α-tocopherol and donepezil hydrochloride for 21 days prevented memory impairment and decreased the number of Aβ plaques by 37.6%, 40.5%, and 72.6% in the entorhinal cortex, DG, and CA1 areas of the hippocampus of the brain of transgenic mice with Alzheimer's disease model (APP/PS1) compared with untreated animals.

Use of Biomass Glycerol as a Reducing Agent for Photocatalytic Deprotection of Pyridine N-Oxides in an Aqueous Suspension of Titanium(IV) Oxide

Deprotection of pyridine N-oxides under mild conditions with an inexpensive and environmentally friendly reducing reagent is an important chemical procedure. The use of biomass waste as the reducing reagent, water as the solvent and solar light as the energy source is one of the most promising approaches with minimal impact on the environment. Therefore, a TiO2 photocatalyst and glycerol are suitable components of this type of reaction. Stoichiometric deprotection of pyridine N-oxide (PyNO) with a minimal amount of glycerol (PyNO:glycerol= 7 : 1) was achieved, with only CO2 being produced as the final oxidation product of glycerol. The deprotection of PyNO was thermally accelerated. Under solar light, the temperature of the reaction system increased to 40-50 °C and PyNO was also quantitatively deprotected, indicating that solar energy, i. e., UV light and thermal energy, can be effectively used. The results provide a new approach in the fields of organic chemistry and medical chemistry using biomass waste and solar light.

Visible-Light-Promoted Decarboxylative Alkylation/Cyclization of Vinylcycloalkanes

An efficient strategy for visible-light-promoted decarboxylative alkylation of vinylcyclopropanes with alkyl N-(acyloxy)phthalimide esters through the dual C-C bond and single N-O bond cleavage, employing triphenylphosphine and lithium iodide as the photoredox system to synthesize 2-alkylated 3,4-dihydronaphthalenes, has been established. This alkylation/cyclization involves a radical process and undergoes a sequence of N-(acyloxy)phthalimide ester single-electron reduction, N-O bond cleavage, decarboxylative, alkyl radical addition, C-C bond cleavage, and intramolecular cyclization. Moreover, using the photocatalyst Na₂-Eosin Y instead of triphenylphosphine and lithium iodide, the vinyl transfer products are acquired when vinylcyclobutanes or vinylcyclopentanes are utilized as alkyl radical receptors.

Photocatalytic Transformation of Biomass and Biomass Derived Compounds-Application to Organic Synthesis

Biomass and biomass-derived compounds have become an important alternative feedstock for chemical industry. They may replace fossil feedstocks such as mineral oil and related platform chemicals. These compounds may also be transformed conveniently into new innovative products for the medicinal or the agrochemical domain. The production of cosmetics or surfactants as well as materials for different applications are examples for other domains where new platform chemicals obtained from biomass can be used. Photochemical and especially photocatalytic reactions have recently been recognized as being important tools of organic chemistry as they make compounds or compound families available that cannot be or are difficultly synthesized with conventional methods of organic synthesis. The present review gives a short overview with selected examples on photocatalytic reactions of biopolymers, carbohydrates, fatty acids and some biomass-derived platform chemicals such as furans or levoglucosenone. In this article, the focus is on application to organic synthesis.

Biological Interfacial Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic optoelectronic devices have received appreciable attention due to their low cost, mechanical flexibility, band-gap engineering, lightness, and solution processability over a broad area. Specifically, realizing sustainability in organic optoelectronics, especially in solar cells and light-emitting devices, is a crucial milestone in the evolution of green electronics. Recently, the utilization of biological materials has appeared as an efficient means to alter the interfacial properties, and hence improve the performance, lifetime and stability of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Biological materials can be known as essential renewable bio-resources obtained from plants, animals and microorganisms. The application of biological interfacial materials (BIMs) in OLEDs is still in its early phase compared to the conventional synthetic interfacial materials; however, their fascinating features (such as their eco-friendly nature, biodegradability, easy modification, sustainability, biocompatibility, versatile structures, proton conductivity and rich functional groups) are compelling researchers around the world to construct innovative devices with enhanced efficiency. In this regard, we provide an extensive review of BIMs and their significance in the evolution of next-generation OLED devices. We highlight the electrical and physical properties of different BIMs, and address how such characteristics have been recently exploited to make efficient OLED devices. Biological materials such as ampicillin, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), nucleobases (NBs) and lignin derivatives have demonstrated significant potential as hole/electron transport layers as well as hole/electron blocking layers for OLED devices. Biological materials capable of generating a strong interfacial dipole can be considered as a promising prospect for alternative interlayer materials for OLED applications.

Synthesis of Ion-Exchange Catalysts by Introduction of Fluorinated Ponytails into Novel Mesoporous Polymers

A novel synthetic procedure for the functionalisation of styrenic cross-linked polymers with perfluorinated acyl chains has been reported. The effective significant grafting of the fluorinated moieties is supported by {¹H}-¹³C and {¹⁹F}-¹³C NMR characterisations. This kind of polymer appears promising as catalytic support for a variety of reactions requiring a highly lipophilic catalyst. Indeed, the improved lipophilicity of the materials resulted in enhanced catalytic properties of the corresponding sulfonic materials in the reaction of esterification of a solution in a vegetable oil of stearic acid with methanol.

Operando Forming of Lattice Vacancy Defect in Ultrathin Crumpled NiVW-Layered Metal Hydroxides Nanosheets for Valorization of Biomass

The 2D layered metal hydroxides (LMHs) have been developed for electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In this work, an effective strategy is proposed to tailor the electronic structure of active sites at the atomic level, which is by introducing defects into the lattice structure. As an example, a series of ultrathin crumpled ternary NiVW-LMH electrocatalysts with abundant lattice vacancies (denoted as NiVW_v -LMH) are prepared in this way. The introduction of tungsten (W) endows the catalyst with a special crumpled structure, which promotes the generation of lattice vacancies and thus exposes more unsaturated Ni activity sites. The NiVW_v -LMH displays superb performance in the electrooxidation of HMF. The Tafel slope for electrodehydrogenation of Ni²⁺ OH bond to Ni(OH)O species is 12.04 mV dec^-1 . The current density at 1.43 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) toward the oxidation reaction of HMF reaches about 193 mA cm^-2 , which is better than most of the common electrocatalysts, with an 5.37-fold improvement compared with Ni(OH)₂ electrode. The preparation strategy demonstrates in this work can be useful for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts.
