Periodate-Mediated Aerobic Oxidation of Sulfides over a Bifunctional Porphyrin-polyoxometalate Catalyst: Photosensitized Singlet Oxygen Oxidation of Iodate to Periodate

Regeneration of terminal oxidants by molecular oxygen in metal-catalyzed oxidations of organic substrates has the advantage of avoiding the use of stoichiometric amounts of hazardous and/or expensive reagents to meet (some of) the green chemistry requirements. In the present study, photosensitized singlet oxygen oxidation of iodate to periodate has been used to regenerate the oxidant in polyoxometalate (POM)-catalyzed oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides with periodate in water. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report on singlet oxygen oxidation of iodate to periodate. In order to determine the contribution of photooxidation and oxidation pathways in the formation of sulfoxide, the oxidation of diphenyl sulfide with a very low reactivity toward aerobic photooxidation was studied; a sevenfold increase in the conversion of the sulfide to the diphenyl sulfoxide was observed for the reaction conducted in the presence of H2TMPyP-PW12O40/IO3-/O2/hν compared to that in the presence of H2TMPyP-PW12O40/O2/hν. Also, under the same conditions, a ca. 1.5-fold increase was observed in the case of methyl phenyl sulfide, which shows high reactivity toward both the oxidation and photooxidation reactions. A porphyrin-POM nanocomposite formed by the electrostatic immobilization of meso-tetra(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (H2TMPyP) on PW12O40 was employed for the one-pot oxidation and photooxidation reactions. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse-reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared were used to characterize the formation of the hybrid compound. An average particle size of 42 nm was estimated for H2TMPyP-PW12O40 from XRD peak broadening using the Scherrer equation. Also, FESEM images showed the formation of nearly spherical nanoparticles with a size of ca. 200 nm. The redshift of the Soret band of H2TMPyP upon immobilization on POM was attributed to strong N-H···O hydrogen-bond interactions between POM and porphyrin.

Hybrid Molecular Magnets with Lanthanide- and Countercation-Mediated Interfacial Electron Transfer between Phthalocyanine and Polyoxovanadate

A series of {V₁₂}-nuclearity polyoxovanadate cages covalently functionalized with one or sandwiched by two phthalocyaninato (Pc) lanthanide (Ln) moieties via V-O-Ln bonds were prepared and fully characterized for paramagnetic Ln = Sm^III-Er^III and diamagnetic Ln = Lu^III, including Y^III. The LnPc-functionalized {V₁₂O₃₂} cages with fully oxidized vanadium centers in the ground state were isolated as (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)] and (nBu₄N)₂[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)₂] compounds. As corroborated by a combined experimental (EPR, DC and AC SQUID, laser photolysis transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry) and computational (DFT, MD, and model Hamiltonian approach) methods, the compounds feature intra- and intermolecular electron transfer that is responsible for a partial reduction at V(3d) centers from V^V to V^IV in the solid state and at high sample concentrations. The effects are generally Ln dependent and are clearly demonstrated for the (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)] representative with Ln = Lu^III or Dy^III. Intramolecular charge transfer takes place for Ln = Lu^III and occurs from a Pc ligand via the Ln center to the {V₁₂O₃₂} core of the same molecule, whereas for Ln = Dy^III, only intermolecular charge transfer is allowed, which is realized from Pc in one molecule to the {V₁₂O₃₂} core of another molecule usually via the nBu₄N⁺ countercation. For all Ln but Dy^III, two of these phenomena may be present in different proportions. Besides, it is demonstrated that (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(DyPc)] is a field-induced single molecule magnet with a maximal relaxation time of the order 10^-3 s. The obtained results open up the way to further exploration and fine-tuning of these three modular molecular nanocomposites regarding tailoring and control of their Ln-dependent charge-separated states (induced by intramolecular transfer) and relaxation dynamics as well as of electron hopping between molecules. This should enable us to realize ultra-sensitive polyoxometalate powered quasi-superconductors, sensors, and data storage/processing materials for quantum technologies and neuromorphic computing.

Porphyrins and Polyoxometalate Scaffolds

Polyoxometalates (POMs) can act as unique reservoirs for multiple electron transfers. As POMs display only weak absorption in the visible spectrum, they can be associated with chromophores such as porphyrins and porphyrin antennae. In this Minireview, the research dedicated to the combination of porphyrins and polyoxometalates is put in context and the state of the art identifying the challenges addressed in the optimization of hybrid materials for applications is detailed.

Enhancement of photocurrent by incorporation of Preyssler type polyoxometalate protected nanoparticles in polyporphyrin films

The introduction of nanoparticles (MNPs) at the surface of cationic poly-porphyrin films, obtained by electrostatic interaction between the bis-porphyrin copolymer and the Preyssler type polyoxometalate P5W30@MNPs, enhances the photocurrent (up to 2.5-3 times greater as a function of the used nanoparticle).

Covalent Grafting of Polyoxometalate Hybrids onto Flat Silicon/Silicon Oxide: Insights from POMs Layers on Oxides

Immobilization of polyoxometalates (POMs) onto oxides is relevant to many applications in the fields of catalysis, energy conversion/storage, or molecular electronics. Optimization and understanding the molecule/oxide interface is crucial to rationally improve the performance of the final molecular materials. We herein describe the synthesis and covalent grafting of POM hybrids with remote carboxylic acid functions onto flat Si/SiO₂ substrates. Special attention has been paid to the characterization of the molecular layer and to the description of the POM anchoring mode at the oxide interface through the use of various characterization techniques, including ellipsometry, AFM, XPS, and FTIR. Finally, electron transport properties were probed in a vertical junction configuration and energy level diagrams have been drawn and discussed in relation with the POM molecular electronic features inferred from cyclic-voltammetry, UV-visible absorption spectra, and theoretical calculations. The electronic properties of these POM-based molecular junctions are driven by the POM LUMO (d-orbitals) whatever the nature of the tether or the anchoring group.

Two new estertin modified tungstosilicates: synthesis, catalytic activity and photoelectrochemical property

Two estertin functionalized tungstosilicates were synthesized and analyzed by DFT. They exhibit good photoelectrocatalytic performance for oxidation of methanol.

Ionic self-assembly of metalloporphyrin/heteropolyacid on multi-wall carbon nanotubes with enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction

We report the synthesis of a series of hybrid electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by ionic self-assembly of positively charged Fe(III) meso-tetra([Formula: see text]-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin (FeP) with negatively charged H3PMo[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] (PMo[Formula: see text] in ethanol solution under ambient conditions in the presence of suspended multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Self-assembled FeP/PMo[Formula: see text] was well-dispersed on MWCNTs with a tunable loading from 26.3% to 55.6%. Interestingly, the hybrid electrocatalysts demonstrated a much higher ORR activity than individual PMo[Formula: see text] and FeP in acidic media. We speculate that this activity enhancement might originate from a possible synergy between PMo[Formula: see text] and FeP. This study may be extended to the design and synthesis of other types of hybrid electrocatalysts for applications in electrochemical energy conversion, storage and sensing.

Charge transport through redox active [H7P8W48O184]33- polyoxometalates self-assembled onto gold surfaces and gold nanodots

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are redox-active molecular oxides, which attract growing interest for their integration into nano-devices, such as high-density data storage non-volatile memories. In this work, we investigated the electrostatic deposition of the negatively charged [H7P8W48O184]33- POM onto positively charged 8-amino-1-octanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) preformed onto gold substrates or onto an array of gold nanodots. The ring-shaped [H7P8W48O184]33- POM was selected as an example of large POMs with high charge storage capacity. To avoid the formation of POM aggregates onto the substrates, which would introduce variability in the local electrical properties, special attention has to be paid to the preformed SAM seeding layer, which should itself be deprived of aggregates. Where necessary, rinsing steps were found to be crucial to eliminate these aggregates and to provide uniformly covered substrates for subsequent POM deposition and electrical characterizations. This especially holds for commercially available gold/glass substrates while these rinsing steps were not essential in the case of template stripped gold of very low roughness. Charge transport through the related molecular junctions and nanodot molecule junctions (NMJs) has been probed by conducting-AFM. We analyzed the current-voltage curves with different models: electron tunneling though the SAMs (Simmons model), transition voltage spectroscopy (TVS) method or molecular single energy level mediated transport (Landauer equation) and we discussed the energetics of the molecular junctions. We concluded to an energy level alignment of the alkyl spacer and POM lowest occupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs), probably due to dipolar effects.

Polyoxometalates in dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the third generation of photovoltaic cells developed by Grätzel and O'Regan. They have the characteristics of low cost, simple manufacturing process, tunable optical properties, and higher photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). With an ever increasing energy crisis, there is an urgent need to develop highly efficient, environmentally benign, and energy-saving cell materials. Polyoxometalates (POMs), a kind of molecular inorganic quasi-semiconductor, are promising candidates for use in different parts of DSSCs due to their excellent photosensitivity, redox, and catalytic properties, as well as their relative stability. Following a brief introduction to the development of DSSCs and the potential virtues of POMs in DSSCs, we attempt to make some generalizations about the energy level regulation of POMs that is the underlying theoretical basis for their application in DSSCs, and then we summarize the research progress of POMs in DSSCs in recent years. This is organized in terms of the properties of POMs, namely, electron acceptor, photosensitivity, redox and catalysis, based on the accumulation of our research into POMs over many years. Meanwhile, in view of the fact that the properties of POMs depend primarily on their electronic structural diversity, we keep this point in mind throughout the article with a view to revealing their structure-property relationships. Finally we provide a short summary and remarks on the future outlook. This review may be of interest to synthetic chemists devoted to designing POMs with specific structures, and researchers engaged in the extension of POMs to photoelectric materials.

Semiconducting Langmuir-Blodgett Films of Porphyrin Paddle-Wheel Frameworks for Photoelectric Conversion

Understanding the photocurrent transportation within porphyrin-containing metal-organic frameworks (PMOFs) will be a critical step in applying these materials in light-harvesting molecular devices in the future. Two copper porphyrin paddle-wheel frameworks (Cu-PPFs) were employed to study the influence of metal ions coordinated into the porphyrin ligands on conductivity and photoelectron transfer capability. To compare the electronic and optical properties of both materials, we prepared an ultrathin film of each PPF via a Langmuir-Blodgett method. The resulting films exhibited uniform morphology and single-crystalline domains, in addition to photoelectric conversion capabilities. We confirmed that both Cu-PPFs have semiconducting properties with an optical band gap of around 2.7 eV. The current density generated by both Cu-PPFs was studied through a mercury drop junction approach. We observed a slightly higher conductivity from the Cu-PPF film consisting of metalloporphyrins than the one without copper doping in the porphyrin centers. In addition, the copper-ion-coordinated porphyrins were found to be more favorable for facilitating photoinduced electron transfer from the Cu-PPF film to a conductive glass substrate. This work presents a new approach of combining thin film fabrication and electro-heterojunction measurement to study electron transfer within an ultrathin film.

Preparation and layer-by-layer solution deposition of Cu(In,Ga)O2 nanoparticles with conversion to Cu(In,Ga)S2 films

We present a method of Cu(In,Ga)S₂ (CIGS) thin film formation via conversion of layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled Cu-In-Ga oxide (CIGO) nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes. CIGO nanoparticles were created via a novel flame-spray pyrolysis method using metal nitrate precursors, subsequently coated with polyallylamine (PAH), and dispersed in aqueous solution. Multilayer films were assembled by alternately dipping quartz, Si, and/or Mo substrates into a solution of either polydopamine (PDA) or polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) and then in the CIGO-PAH dispersion to fabricate films as thick as 1–2 microns. PSS/CIGO-PAH films were found to be inadequate due to weak adhesion to the Si and Mo substrates, excessive particle diffusion during sulfurization, and mechanical softness ill-suited to further processing. PDA/CIGO-PAH films, in contrast, were more mechanically robust and more tolerant of high temperature processing. After LbL deposition, films were oxidized to remove polymer and sulfurized at high temperature under flowing hydrogen sulfide to convert CIGO to CIGS. Complete film conversion from the oxide to the sulfide is confirmed by X-ray diffraction characterization.

Synthesis and characterization of conjugated Dawson-type polyoxometalate-porphyrin copolymers

Hybrid polyoxometalate-porphyrin copolymeric films were obtained by the electro-oxidation of zinc octaethylporphyrin (ZnOEP) in the presence of a Dawson type polyoxophosphovanadotungstate bearing two pyridyl groups (POM(py)2). The synthesis of a series of POM(py)2 consisting of [P2W15V3O62](9-) functionalized with diol-amide or triol moieties, as well as the characterization of the copolymers are presented.

Enhancement of photovoltaic efficiency by insertion of a polyoxometalate layer at the anode of an organic solar cell

Thick layers of the Wells–Dawson K₆[P₂W₁₈O₆₂] highly ordered were obtained and integrated at the anodic interface of organic solar cells to reach high power conversion efficiency.

Layer-by-layer assembly of graphene oxide and a Ru(II) complex and significant photocurrent generation properties

The multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer electrostatically coassembling graphene oxide and a ruthenium complex of [Ru(bpy)2L](ClO4)2 {L = 2-(2,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-4-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline} and characterized using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The dependence of redox properties and cathodic photocurrents on the number of layers deposited and the photocurrent generation mechanism and polarity were studied in detail. The homogeneous growth and close packing of the two film-forming components, linear relationships of the dark cyclic voltometry peak currents and photocurrents vs number of layers deposited, and large cathodic photocurrent density of 4.1 μA/cm(2) for a four-layer film make this novel hybrid thin film promising applications ranging from molecular photovoltaic and photocatalytic molecular devices to photoelectrochemical sensing.
