Solvent and substituent effects on aggregation constants of perylene bisimide π-stacks--a linear free energy relationship analysis

A temperature sensor with a wide spectral range based on a dual-emissive TADF dendrimer system

Dual emission from thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters is often difficult to observe, especially in solution, limited by Kasha's rule. Two TADF dendrimers containing N-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as acceptors are designed and synthesized. Compound 2GCzBPN, having a strongly twisted geometry, exhibits TADF, while 2GCzBPPZ, possessing a less twisted geometry, shows dual emission associated with the monomer and aggregate that is TADF. The demonstration reveals that 2GCzBPPZ can serve as a temperature sensor with excellent temperature sensitivity and remarkably wide emission color response in solution. By embedding 2GCzBPPZ in paraffin we demonstrate a spatial-temperature sensor that shows a noticeable emission shift from yellow to green and ultimately to blue as the temperature increases from 20 to 200 °C. We finally demonstrate the utility of these TADF dendrimers in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes.

Ultrafast and Coherent Dynamics in a Solvent Switchable "Pink Box" Perylene Diimide Dimer

Perylene diimide (PDI) dimers and higher aggregates are key components in organic molecular photonics and photovoltaic devices, supporting singlet fission and symmetry breaking charge separation. Detailed understanding of their excited states is thus important. This has proven challenging because interchromophoric coupling is a strong function of dimer architecture. Recently, a macrocyclic PDI dimer was reported in which excitonic coupling could be turned on and off simply by changing the solvent. This presents a useful case where coupling is modified without synthetic changes to tune supramolecular structure. Here we present a detailed study of solvent dependent excited state dynamics in this dimer by means of coherent multidimensional spectroscopy. Spectral analysis resolves the different coupling strengths, which are consistent with solvent dependent changes in dimer conformation. The strongly coupled conformer forms an excimer within 300 fs. The low-frequency Raman active modes recovered from two-dimensional electronic spectra reveal frequencies characteristic of exciton coupling. These are assigned to modes modulating the coupling from the corresponding DFT calculations. Further analysis reveals a time dependent frequency during excimer formation. Analysis of two-dimensional "beatmaps" reveals features in the coupled dimer which are not predicted by the displaced harmonic oscillator model and are assigned to vibronic coupling.

Electronic Couplings versus Thermal Fluctuations in the Internal Conversion of Perylene Diimides: The Battle to Localize the Exciton

Energy transfer processes among units of light-harvesting homo-oligomers impact the efficiency of these materials as components in organic optoelectronic devices such as solar cells. Perylene diimide (PDI), a prototypical dye, features exceptional light absorption and highly tunable optical and electronic properties. These properties can be modulated by varying the number of PDI units and linkers between them. Herein, atomistic nonadiabatic excited state molecular dynamics is used to explore the energy transfer during the internal conversion of acetylene and diacetylene bridged dimeric and trimeric PDIs. Our simulations reveal a significant impact of the bridge type on the transient exciton localization/delocalization between units of PDI dimers. After electronic relaxation, larger exciton delocalization occurs in the PDI dimer connected by the diacetylene bridge with respect to the one connected by the shorter acetylene bridge. These changes can be rationalized by the Frenkel exciton model. We outline a technique for deriving parameters for this model using inputs provided by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. Frenkel exciton description reveals an interplay between the relative strengths of the diagonal and off-diagonal disorders. Moreover, atomistic simulations and the Frenkel exciton model of the PDI trimer systems corroborate in detail the localization properties of the exciton on the molecular units during the internal conversion to the lowest-energy excited state when the units become effectively decoupled. Overall, atomistic nonadiabatic simulations in combination with the Frenkel exciton model can serve as a predictive framework for analyzing and predicting desired exciton traps in PDI-based oligomers designed for organic electronics and photonic devices.

Enhanced Near-infrared Phosphorescent Emission Modulated by Clipping of Metallotweezers in Aqueous Media

Near-infrared phosphorescent materials have received significant attention due to their potential applications in bioimaging and diagnostics. Although, many types of organic phosphors with near-infrared emission have been developed, the low phosphorescence efficiency in aqueous solution hampers their practical applications in biological systems. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop near-infrared phosphorescent materials with high emission efficiency in aqueous media. Metallotweezers, based on d8 transition metal complexes, emerge as the potential candidates for realizing this objective. Specifically, metallotweezers, featuring two positively charged platinum(II) terpyridine and neutral gold(III) diphenylpyridine pincers on diphenylpyridine spacer, have been designed and synthesized, respectively. The pre-organization effect, rendered by the rigid spacer, enables the resulting metallotweezers to complex with each other, resulting in the formation of clipping complex. The synergistic rigidifying and shielding effects of clipping structure results in enhanced phosphorescent emission intensity. Concurrently, due to phase segregation between the clipping units and the polyethylene glycol tail, the clipping complex undergoes self-assembly in aqueous solution, resulting in phosphorescent emission in the near-infrared region. Overall, non-covalent clipping of metallotweezers illustrated in this study presents a new and effective approach toward near-infrared phosphorescent materials.

Pathway Selection in Temporal Evolution of Supramolecular Polymers of Ionic π-Systems: Amphiphilic Organic Solvent Dictates the Fate of Water

Understanding solvent-solute interactions is essential to designing and synthesising soft materials with tailor-made functions. Although the interaction of the solute with the solvent mixture is more complex than the single solvent medium, solvent mixtures are exciting to unfold several unforeseen phenomena in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report two unforeseen pathways observed during the hierarchical assembly of cationic perylene diimides (cPDIs) in water and amphiphilic organic solvent (AOS) mixtures. When the aqueous supramolecular polymers (SPs) of cPDIs are injected into AOS, initially kinetically trapped short SPs are formed, which gradually transform into thermodynamically stable high aspect ratio SP networks. Using various experimental and theoretical investigations, we found that this temporal evolution follows two distinct pathways depending on the nature of the water-AOS interactions. If the AOS is isopropanol (IPA), water is released from cPDIs into bulk IPA due to strong hydrogen bonding interactions, which further decreases the monomer concentration of cPDIs (Pathway-1). In the case of dioxane AOS, cPDI monomer concentration further increases as water is retained among cPDIs (Pathway-2) due to relatively weak interactions between dioxane and water. Interestingly, these two pathways are accelerated by external stimuli such as heat and mechanical agitation.

Achieving Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence through Noncovalent Clipping of Metallotweezers

Circularly polarized phosphorescent materials, based on host-guest complexation, have received significant attention due to their outstanding emission performance in solutions. Recent studies have primarily focused on macrocyclic host-guest complexes. To broaden the scope of this research, there is a keen pursuit of developing novel chiral phosphorescent host-guest systems. Metallotweezers with square-planar d8 transition metal complexes emerge as promising candidates for achieving this objective. Specifically, metallotweezers, comprising platinum(II) terpyridine and gold(III) diphenylpyridine pincers on a diphenylpyridine scaffold, have been designed and synthesized. Due to the preorganization effect rendered by the diphenylpyridine scaffold, the resulting metallotweezers are capable of complexing with each other and forming quadruple stacking structures. The phosphorescent emission is enhanced owing to the synergistic rigidifying and shielding effects. Meanwhile, the steric effect of chiral (1R) pinene units on the platinum(II) terpyridine pincers results in a stereospecific twist for the quadruple stacking structures. Thus, the chirality transfers from the molecular to the supramolecular level. By a combination of phosphorescent enhancement and supramolecular chirality for the clipping complex, circularly polarized phosphorescent emission is achieved. Overall, noncovalent clipping of metallotweezers exemplified in the current study presents a novel and effective approach toward solution-processable circularly polarized phosphorescent materials.

Wavily Curved Perylene Diimides: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photovoltaic Properties

Solubility enhancement is a key issue for developing the perylene diimide-based functional materials. Introduction of curved structure proved an effective solubilizing method without employing steric repulsion. In this work, wavily curved perylene diimides were developed as a new family of highly soluble curved perylene diimides. Moreover, their conformational dynamics, aggregating properties, electronic properties, and photovoltaic performances were thoroughly examined in comparison to the previously reported isomer exhibiting an arched curvature. The waved isomer demonstrated heightened rigidity and a greater propensity for aggregation compared to the arched isomer, likely attributed to its more planar structure. Each benzoxepin unit played a role in cancelling out the curvature on the opposite side. While the difference in the molecular curvature did not cause significant alterations in the photophysical and electron-accepting properties, we identified that the modulation of the curved structure is effective in controlling the morphology of the photoelectric conversion layer.

Self-Assembly Behavior, Aggregation Structure, and the Charge Carrier Transport Properties of S-Heterocyclic Annulated Perylene Diimide Derivatives

The construction of high-performance n-type semiconductors is crucial for the advancement of organic electronics. As an attractive n-type semiconductor, molecular systems based on perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) have been extensively investigated over recent years. Owing to the fascinating aggregated structure and high performance, S-heterocyclic annulated PDIs (SPDIs) are receiving increasing attention. However, the relationship between the structure and the electrical properties of SPDIs has not been deeply revealed, restricting the progress of PDI-based organic electronics. Here, we developed two novel SPDIs with linear and dendronized substituents in the imide position, named linear SPDI and dendronized SPDI, respectively. A series of structural and property characterizations indicated that linear SPDI formed a long-range-ordered crystalline structure based on helical supramolecular columns, while dendronized SPDI, with longer alkyl side chains, formed a 3D-ordered crystalline structure at a low temperature, which transformed into a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal structure at a high temperature. Moreover, no significant charge carrier transport signal was examined for linear SPDI, while dendronized SPDI had a charge carrier mobility of 3.5 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 2.1 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 in the crystalline and liquid crystalline state, respectively. These findings highlight the importance of the structure-function relationship in PDIs, and also offer useful roadmaps for the design of high-performance organic electronics for down-to-earth applications.

Tuning the Liquid Crystallinity and Electroluminescence via Sulfonation of S-Annulated Perylene Tetraester

This study presents a comparative analysis of S-annulated perylene tetraester (PTE-S) and its sulfone (PTE-SO2) analogue. This sulfone modification reduced melting point and stabilized a room temperature columnar rectangular (Colr) phase in contrast to its parent PTE-S which showed a crystalline behaviour at room temperature. This molecular design also leads to red-shifted absorbance and emission in comparison to PTE-S, along with a tuning of photoluminescence from sky blue to green, achieving an impressive quantum yield of 85 %. OLED devices fabricated using PTE-SO2 as emitter material at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 wt.% in CBP as host material. A maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.9 % was observed with the 0.5 wt.% PTE-SO2 in CBP with CIE coordinates of (0.45, 0.35), accompanied by an orange luminance of 848 cd/m2. Notably, a device with a 0.5 wt% doping concentration of PTE-S demonstrates an EQE of 3.5 %, and cyan luminance of 2,598 cd/m2.

Investigating the diastereoselective synthesis of a macrocycle under Curtin-Hammett control

This work sheds new light on the stereoselective synthesis of chiral macrocycles containing twisted aromatic units, valuable π-conjugated materials for recognition, sensing, and optoelectronics. For the first time, we use the Curtin-Hammett principle to investigate a chiral macrocyclisation reaction, revealing the potential for supramolecular π-π interactions to direct the outcome of a dynamic kinetic resolution, favouring the opposite macrocyclic product to that expected under reversible, thermodynamically controlled conditions. Specifically, a dynamic, racemic perylene diimide dye (1 : 1 P : M) is strapped with an enantiopure (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol group (P-BINOL) to form two diastereomeric macrocyclic products, the homochiral macrocycle (PP) and the heterochiral species (PM). We find there is notable selectivity for the PM macrocycle (dr = 4 : 1), which is rationalised by kinetic templation from intramolecular aromatic non-covalent interactions between the P-BINOL π-donor and the M-PDI π-acceptor during the macrocyclisation reaction.

Increased solar-driven chemical transformations through surface-induced benzoperylene aggregation in dye-sensitized photoanodes

The impact of benzo[ghi]perylenetriimide (BPTI) dye aggregation on the performance of photoelectrochemical devices was explored, through imide-substitution with either alkyl (BPTI-A, 2-ethylpropyl) or bulky aryl (BPTI-B, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) moieties, to, respectively, enable or suppress aggregation. While both dyes demonstrated similar monomeric optoelectronic properties in solution, adsorption onto mesoporous SnO2 revealed different behavior, with BPTI-A forming aggregates via π-stacking and BPTI-B demonstrating reduced aggregation in the solid state. BPTI photoanodes were tested in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) before application to dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DSPECs) for Br2 production (a strong oxidant) coupled to H2 generation (a solar fuel). BPTI-A demonstrated a twofold higher dye loading of the SnO2 surface than BPTI-B, resulting in a fivefold enhancement to both photocurrent and Br2 production. The enhanced output of the photoelectrochemical systems (with respect to dye loading) was attributed to both J- and H- aggregation phenomena in BPTI-A photoanodes that lead to improved light harvesting. Our investigation provides a strategy to exploit self-assembly via aggregation to improve molecular light-harvesting and charge separation properties that can be directly applied to dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical devices.

Competitive Charge Separation Pathways in a Flexible Molecular Folda-Dimer

We report the photophysical properties of a molecular folda-dimer system PDI-AnEt2-PDI, where the electron-donating N,N-diethylaniline (AnEt2) moiety bridges two electron-accepting perylene diimide (PDI) chromophores. The conformationally flexible PDI-AnEt2-PDI adopts either an open (two PDIs far apart) or folded (two PDIs within π-stacking distance) conformation, depending on the solvent environment. We characterized the photoinduced charge separation dynamics of both open and folded forms in solvents of varying polarity. The open form undergoes charge separation to give PDI•--AnEt2•+-PDI (Bridge electron transfer) independent of solvent polarity. The folded form exhibits two charge separation photoproducts, yielding both PDI•--AnEt2•+-PDI and PDI•--AnEt2-PDI•+, the latter of which is formed via symmetry-breaking charge separation (SBCS) between the two π-stacked PDI chromophores. Our results further indicate that the conformational flexibility of the folda-dimer leads to unexpected excimer formation in some open form conditions. In contrast, no excimer formation is observed in the folded form, indicating that this geometry preferentially yields the SBCS instead. Our results provide insight into how conformationally flexible folda-dimer systems can be designed and built to tune competitive photophysical pathways.

Self-Assembly of Discrete Oligomers of Naphthalenediimides in Bulk and on Surfaces

Here, we report on the synthesis of discrete oligomers of alkyl-bridged naphthalenediimides (NDIs) and study their molecular nanostructures both in bulk, in solution, and at the liquid-solid interface. Via an iterative synthesis method, multiple NDI cores were bridged with short and saturated alkyl-diamines (C3 and C12 ) or long and unsaturated alkyl-diamines (u2 C33 to u8 C100 ) at their imide termini. The strong intermolecular interaction between the NDI cores was observed by probing their photophysical properties in solution. In bulk, the discrete NDI oligomers preferentially ordered in lamellar morphologies, irrespective of whether a saturated or unsaturated spacer was employed. Moreover, both the molecular architecture as well as the crystallization conditions play a significant role in the nanoscale ordering. The long unsaturated alkyl chains lead preferably to folded-chain conformations while their saturated analogues form stretched arrangements. At the solution-solid interface, well-defined lamellar regions were observed. These results show that precision in chemical structure alone is not sufficient to reach well-defined structures of discrete oligomers, but that it must be combined with precision in processing conditions.

Supramolecular Large Nanosheets Assembled at Air/Water Interfaces and in Solution from Amphiphilic Heptagon-Containing Nanographenes

We report the synthesis of a new set of amphiphilic saddle-shaped heptagon-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) functionalized with tetraethylene glycol chains and their self-assembly into large two-dimensional (2D) polymers. An in-depth analysis of the self-assembly mechanism at the air/water interface has been carried out, and the proposed arrangement models are in good agreement with the molecular dynamics simulations. Quite remarkably, the number and disposition of the tetraethylene glycol chains significantly influence the disposition of the PAHs at the interface and conditionate their packing under pressure. For the three compounds studied, we observed three different behaviors in which the aromatic core is parallel, perpendicular, and tilted with respect to the water surface. We also show that these curved PAHs are able to self-assemble in solution into remarkably large sheets of up to 150 μm2. These results show the relationship, within a family of curved nanographenes, between the monomer configuration and their self-assembly capacity in air/water interfaces and organic-water mixtures.

Photophysical Properties of Homo- and Hetero-Aggregate Assemblies Made of N-Annulated Perylene Derivatives

We report the absorption spectra and photophysical properties of homo and hetero-aggregate assemblies of a strongly emissive N-annulated perylene dye (P) and of a dyad made of P and a methyl viologen derivative (P-MV), in ethanol-water solutions. In homo-aggregate assemblies of P, the π-π* fluorescence of the isolated chromophore is replaced by excimer emission at lower energy, with a lifetime of 900 ps, due to excimer formation from the initially prepared excitons. In homo-aggregate assemblies of P-MV, photoinduced charge separation, with formation of P+ -MV- species, occurs in 3 ps with a charge recombination of 20 ps. In hetero-aggregate P/P-MV systems, the light energy absorbed by the P components delocalizes over various P subunits, and when a P-MV unit is reached, charge separation occurs; however, excimer emission is present for P/P-MV ratio larger than 3 : 1, indicating that delocalized excitons within the hetero-aggregate systems extend over a limited number of P chromophores.

Light-Controlled Switching of Perylene Bisimide Assemblies

Light-driven changes in supramolecular interactions in perylene bisimides (PBIs) with pendant sulfur-containing functional groups at the bay position are demonstrated. In the ground state, a noncovalent S···X interaction between the σ-hole on sulfur and a heteroatom, X (X = O, N, S), of a neighboring molecule is the main driving force for intermolecular interactions, while in the excited state it is the π-π interaction between PBI scaffolds which drives assembly. The presence of heteroatoms in the solvent results in acceleration of the π-stacking process via the formation of a PBI-solvent complex. The excited-state dynamics involved in the assembly process were revealed via time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, while steady-state spectroscopy was used to evaluate the structure of the supramolecular assembly.

Donor-acceptor complex formation by social self-sorting of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and perylene bisimides

Self-assembly versus complexation with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) guest molecules is studied for a series of perylene bisimides (PBIs). Bulky imide substituents at the PBI guide their self-assembly into dimer aggregates with null-type exciton coupling. Host-guest titration experiments with perylene and triphenylene PAHs afford 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes whose properties are studied by single crystal X-ray analysis and UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.

The interplay between hydrogen and halogen bonding: substituent effects and their role in the hydrogen bond enhanced halogen bond

The hydrogen bond enhanced halogen bond (HBeXB) has recently been used to effectively improve anion binding, organocatalysis, and protein structure/function. In this study, we present the first systematic investigation of substituent effects in the HBeXB. NMR analysis confirmed intramolecular HBing between the amine and the electron-rich belt of the XB donor (N-H⋯I). Gas-phase density functional theory studies showed that the influence of HBing on the halogen atom is more sensitive to substitution on the HB donor ring (R1). The NMR studies revealed that the intramolecular HBing had a significant impact on receptor performance, resulting in a 50-fold improvement. Additionally, linear free energy relationship (LFER) analysis was employed for the first time to study the substituent effect in the HBeXB. The results showed that substituents on the XB donor ring (R2) had a competing effect where electron donating groups strengthened the HB and weakened the XB. Therefore, selecting an appropriate substituent on the adjacent HB donor ring (R1) could be an alternative and effective way to enhance an electron-rich XB donor. X-ray crystallographic analysis demonstrated that intramolecular HBing plays an important role in the receptor adopting the bidentate conformation. Taken together, the findings imply that modifying distal substituents that affect neighboring noncovalent interactions can have a similar impact to conventional para substitution substituent effects.

Distinct seed topologies enable comparison of elongation and secondary nucleation pathways in seeded supramolecular polymerization

The influence of seed topologies on seeded supramolecular polymerization was examined using helicoidal and toroidal supramolecular polymer seeds. The addition of these seeds to a supersaturated solution of monomers led to distinct nucleation-growth kinetics, which were attributed to the significant difference between the elongation from helicoid termini and secondary nucleation catalyzed by the toroid surface.

Spectroscopic and Spectroelectrochemical Studies of Hexapentyloxytriphenylene-A Model Discotic Molecule

The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of the discotic mesogen 2,3,6,7,10,11-pentyloxytriphenylene (H5T) were studied with the use of cyclic voltammetry combined with UV-Vis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in solution. The UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy of H5T in dichloromethane showed its monomeric state in a concentration range up to 10^-3 mol dm^-3. The reversible process of the electrochemical formation of the radical cation was evidenced within the experimentally accessible potential window. The in situ UV-Vis spectroelectrochemical measurements further enabled identification of the product of the redox process and evaluation of the effect of aggregation in the concentration range of 5 × 10^-3 mol dm^-3. The results are discussed in the frame of solvent effects on the self-assembly propensity of solute molecules, in a wide range of concentrations. In particular, the crucial role of the solvent polarity is indicated, which contributes to the understanding of solution effects and pre-programming of supramolecular organic materials, in particular anisotropic disc-shaped hexa-substituted triphenylenes.

Intramolecular and Intermolecular Interaction Switching in the Aggregates of Perylene Diimide Trimer: Effect of Hydrophobicity

The research on perylene diimide (PDI) aggregates effectively promotes their applications in organic photovoltaic solar cells and fluorescent sensors. In this paper, a PDI fabricated with three peripheral PDI units (N, N’-bis(6-undecyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide)) is investigated. The trimer shows different absorption and fluorescence properties due to hydrophobicity when dissolved in the mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water. Through comprehensive analysis of the fluorescence lifetime and transient absorption spectroscopic results, we concluded that the trimer underwent different excited state kinetic pathways with different concentrations of water in THF. When dissolved in pure THF solvent, both the intramolecular charge-transfer and excimer states are formed. When the water concentration increases from 0 to 50% (v/v), the formation time of the excimer state and its structural relaxation time are prolonged, illustrating the arising of the intermolecular excimer state. It is interesting to determine that the probability of the intramolecular charge-transfer pathway will first decrease and then increase as the speed of intermolecular excimer formation slows down. The two inflection points appear when the water concentration is above 10% and 40%. The results not only highlight the importance of hydrophobicity on the aggregate properties of PDI multimers but also guide the further design of PDI-based organic photovoltaic solar cells.

Efficient Photoredox Cycles to Control Perylenediimide Self-Assembly

Photoreduction of perylenediimide (PDI) derivatives has been widely studied for use in photocatalysis, hydrogen evolution, photo-responsive gels, and organic semiconductors. Upon light irradiation, the radical anion (PDI⋅^- ) can readily be obtained, whereas further reduction to the dianion (PDI^2- ) is rare. Here we show that full 2-electron photoreduction can be achieved using UVC light: 1) in anaerobic conditions by 'direct photoreduction' of PDI aggregates, or 2) by 'indirect photoreduction' in aerobic conditions due to acetone ketyl radicals. The latter strategy is also efficient for other dyes, such as naphthalenediimide (NDI) and methylviologen (MV²⁺ ). Efficient photoreduction on the minute time-scale using simple LED light in aerobic conditions is attractive for use in dissipative light-driven systems and materials.

The Pink Box: Exclusive Homochiral Aromatic Stacking in a Bis-perylene Diimide Macrocycle

This work showcases chiral complementarity in aromatic stacking interactions as an effective tool to optimize the chiroptical and electrochemical properties of perylene diimides (PDIs). PDIs are a notable class of robust dye molecules and their rich photo- and electrochemistry and potential chirality make them ideal organic building blocks for chiral optoelectronic materials. By exploiting the new bay connectivity of twisted PDIs, a dynamic bis-PDI macrocycle (the "Pink Box") is realized in which homochiral PDI-PDI π-π stacking interactions are switched on exclusively. Using a range of experimental and computational techniques, we uncover three important implications of the macrocycle's chiral complementarity for PDI optoelectronics. First, the homochiral intramolecular π-π interactions anchor the twisted PDI units, yielding enantiomers with half-lives extended over 400-fold, from minutes to days (in solution) or years (in the solid state). Second, homochiral H-type aggregation affords the macrocycle red-shifted circularly polarized luminescence and one of the highest dissymmetry factors of any small organic molecule in solution (glum = 10-2 at 675 nm). Finally, excellent through-space PDI-PDI π-orbital overlap stabilizes PDI reduced states, akin to covalent functionalization with electron-withdrawing groups.

Direct Participation of Solvent Molecules in the Formation of Supramolecular Polymers

This article reports supramolecular polymerization of two bis-amide functionalized naphthalene-diimide (NDI) building blocks (NDI-L and NDI-C) in two solvents, namely n-heptane (Hep) and methylcyclohexane (MCH). NDI-L and NDI-C differ only by the peripheral hydrocarbon wedges, consisting of linear C7 chains or cyclic methylcyclohexane rings, respectively. UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy studies reveal distinct internal order and H-bonding pattern for NDI-L and NDI-C aggregates irrespective of the solvent system, indicating the dominant role of the intrinsic packing parameters of the individual building block, possibly influenced by the peripheral steric crowding. However, NDI-L produces a significantly stronger gel in Hep compared to MCH as evident from the rheological and thermal properties. In contrast, NDI-C exhibits a clear preference for MCH, producing gel with moderate strength but in Hep it fails to produce 1D morphology or gelation. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies corroborate with the experimental observation and provide the rationale for the observed solvent-shape effect by revealing a quantitative estimate regarding the thermodynamics of self-assembly in these four combinations. Such clear-cut shape-matching effect (between the peripheral hydrocarbon wedge and the solvent system) unambiguously support a direct participation of the solvent molecules during supramolecular polymerization and presence of a closely-adhered solvent shell around the supramolecular polymers, similar to the first layer of water molecules around the protein surface. Solvent induced CD experiments support this hypothesis as induced CD band was observed only from a chiral co-solvent of matching shape. This is reconfirmed by the higher de-solvation temperature of the shape-matching NDI/solvent system combination compared to the shape mis-match combination in variable temperature UV/Vis experiments, revealing transformation to a different aggregate at higher temperatures rather than disassembly to the monomer for all four combinations.

Rigid Bay-Conjugated Perylene Bisimide Rotors: Solvent-Induced Excited-State Symmetry Breaking and Resonance-Enhanced Two-Photon Absorption

Intramolecular charge transfer and excited-state symmetry breaking have a significant effect on the nonlinear optical properties of multipolar chromophores. Rigid and nonplanar perylene bisimide derivatives (PBIs) functionalized at bay positions were comparatively and comprehensively investigated. In apolar solvents, two quadrupolar molecular rotors showed an obvious decrease of the A_0-0/A_0-1 ratios, suggesting strong exciton coupling with the adjacent PBI units initiated by the π-π stacking. The vanishment of the preferable dimer emission in polar solvents supported the plausible phenomena of excited-state symmetry breaking, thanks to the facile rotation around the rigid linkers. Comparative femtosecond transition absorption studies confirmed their notable differences in relaxation dynamics and the generation of radical anions (PBI^•-) and cations (PBI^•+). The maxima two-photon absorption (2PA) wavelengths obtained for the molecular rotors were slightly red-shifted to 670 nm with intrinsic resonance-enhanced characteristics, reflecting the synergistic effect of functional positions and molecular architectures. Meanwhile, the obvious increase of significant 2PA cross-section values in polar solvents illustrated the stabilization of the symmetry-broken dipolar states. Further femtosecond Z-scan also manifested the contribution of excited-state dynamics on the nonlinear optical properties of multipolar chromophores.

How the Interplay among Conformational Disorder, Solvation, Local, and Charge-Transfer Excitations Affects the Absorption Spectrum and Photoinduced Dynamics of Perylene Diimide Dimers: A Molecular Dynamics/Quantum Vibronic Approach

In this contribution we present a mixed quantum-classical dynamical approach for the computation of vibronic absorption spectra of molecular aggregates and their nonadiabatic dynamics, taking into account the coupling between local excitations (LE) and charge-transfer (CT) states. The approach is based on an adiabatic (Ad) separation between the soft degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the system and the stiff vibrations, which are described by the quantum dynamics (QD) of wave packets (WPs) moving on the coupled potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the LE and CT states. These PESs are described with a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian, parameterized by an overlap-based diabatization on the grounds of time-dependent density functional theory computations. The WPs time evolution is computed with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method, using effective modes defined through a hierarchical representation of the LVC Hamiltonian. The soft DoFs are sampled with classical molecular dynamics (MD), and the coupling between the slow and fast DoFs is included by recomputing the key parameters of the LVC Hamiltonians, specifically for each MD configuration. This method, named Ad-MD|gLVC, is applied to a perylene diimide (PDI) dimer in acetonitrile and water solutions, and it is shown to accurately reproduce the change in the vibronic features of the absorption spectrum upon aggregation. Moreover, the microscopic insight offered by the MD trajectories allows for a detailed understanding of the role played by the fluctuation of the aggregate structure on the shape of the vibronic spectrum and on the population of LE and CT states. The nonadiabatic QD predicts an extremely fast (∼50 fs) energy transfer between the two LEs. CT states have only a moderate effect on the absorption spectrum, despite the fact that after photoexcitation they are shown to acquire a fast and non-negligible population, highlighting their relevance in dictating the charge separation and transport in PDI-based optical devices.

Chromonic nematic liquid crystals in a room-temperature ionic liquid

Planar multiaromatic molecules hierarchically and selectively arrange into nematic chromonic liquid crystals in the room temperature ionic liquid 2-hydroxyethylammonium formate. In a proof of concept, these liquid crystals were used as reaction media to produce mesostructured silica materials under mild biomimetic conditions. Several other applications are envisaged.

Resonance-Enhanced Two-Photon Absorption and Optical Power Limiting Properties of Three-Dimensional Perylene Bisimide Derivatives

Push-pull organic structures characterized by an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process and π-electron delocalization are potentially interesting luminescent materials. A series of three-dimensional o-carborane-containing perylene bisimide derivatives (PBIs) were synthesized, and their optical properties were systematically investigated to illustrate the stereo effect, especially on the two-photon absorption (2PA) and optical power limiting (OPL) properties. Open-aperture Z-scan curves showed that all four PBIs displayed strong and broad two-photon absorptivities based on the resonance-enhanced phenomenon. The maximum degenerate two-photon absorption cross section (δ_2PA) increased with the number of PBI substituents. The derivative CB-PBI possessed a δ_2PA value of ∼2400 GM at 650 nm, a significant enhancement in comparison with that of the parent PBI (∼719 GM), ascribed to the present stereo effect. When the aromatic-donating units changed from naphthyl and pyrenyl to PBI, the generated multidimensional intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the aromatic units to the o-carborane cage contributed to the 2PA processes. All of the fluorophores exhibited excellent optical power limiting (OPL) performances as well as a minimum limiting threshold of ∼4.98 mJ/cm² for CB-PBI. These significant results not only allow us to get deep insight into the nature of the fundamental stereo effect and nonlinear optical (NLO) response involved but also guide us toward the design of new multifunctional luminescent materials.

Chiral Supramolecular Polymers Assembled by Amphiphilic Oligopeptide-Perylene Diimides and High Electrochemical Sensing

Various secondary structures, for example, β-sheet hydrogen bonds formed by oligopeptides exhibiting high directionality and selectivity provide a new avenue to regulate optoelectronic performances of supramolecular assemblies constructed by π-conjugated chromophores. In this work, oligopeptide-perylene diimides (AUPDIs) are synthesized to generate β-sheet strands which guide the formation of chiral supramolecular polymers with a diversity of morphologies in combination with the π-π stacking even in aqueous media. Complex morphology transitions are successfully controlled by simply adjusting the water volume fraction in the binary solvent of water and tetrahydrofuran from spherical hollow aggregates to long helical nanowires and to short nanofibers. The mechanism of the assembly changes from cooperative to the isodesmic model relying on AUPDI concentrations. This originates from the transformation in the β-sheet that regulates profoundly the arrangement of the AUPDI molecules. Prominently efficient and positive electronic sensing to triethylamine for highly helical nanowires engenders due to the highly ordered helical arrangement within the nanowires, fourfold of the short nanofibers.

Charge-Delocalized State and Coherent Vibrational Dynamics in Rigid PBI H-Aggregates

Herein, the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics and vibrational coherences for two perylenebisimide (PBI) H-aggregates showcase the formation of the excimer state and the delocalized radical anion state in the excited state, respectively. Using femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) and time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (TR-ISRS) measurements, we unveiled excited-state dynamics of PBI H-aggregates in two aspects: (1) the intermolecular interactions between PBI units in H-aggregates induce the formation of new excited states, excimer and delocalized radical anion states, and (2) the intermolecular out-of-plane along the aggregate axis and the PBI core C═C stretch Raman modes can be a crucial indicator to understand the coherent exciton dynamics in H-aggregates. Notably, those excited-state Raman modes showed stationary peak positions during the excited-state dynamics. TR-ISRS analysis provides insights into the excited-state vibrational coherences concerning the formation of the excimer and charge-delocalized state in each aggregate system.

Columnar Mesomorphism of Board-Shaped Perylene, Diketopyrrolopyrrole, Isoindigo, Indigo, and Quinoxalino-Phenanthrophenazine Dyes

The properties of organic dyes depend as much on their intermolecular interactions as on their molecular structure. While it is generally predictable what supramolecular structure would be ideal for a specific application, the generation of specific supramolecular structures by molecular design and suitable processing methods remains to be a challenge. A versatile approach to different supramolecular structures has been the application of mesomorphism in conjunction with alignment techniques and self-assembly at interfaces. Reviewed here is the columnar mesomorphism of board-shaped dyes perylene, indigo, isoindigo, diketopyrrolopyrrole, and quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine. They generate a larger number of different supramolecular structures than conventional disc-shaped (discotic) mesogens because of their non-circular shape and directional intermolecular interactions. The mesomorphism of all but the perylene derivatives is systematically and comprehensively covered for the first time.

Hierarchical self-assemblies of carnosine asymmetrically functioned perylene diimide with high optoelectronic response

HYPOTHESIS

Taking advantage of photoinduced electron transfer, one dimensional organic nanomaterials with tunable donor-acceptor (D-A) interface provide a promising avenue to get high optoelectric properties. However, strong charge transfer interaction between D and A segments impedes the formation of long-range ordered structure, which limits the charge transport through efficient π electronic delocalization. Incorporation of chiral peptide offering various hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) along with asymmetric molecular structure enables substantially controllable D-A interface and tunable organization of the π-conjugates.

EXPERIMENTS

A new amphiphilic perylene diimide (CUPDI) with PDI as an acceptor is designed and synthesized. A polar chiral dipeptide composed of β-alanine and l-histidine with the imidazole ring as the donor i.e., l-carnosine, is incorporated at one of imides. Transition of various supramolecular assemblies of CUPDI is realized by changing CUPDI concentration and solvents. The photoelectronic properties of the assemblies are investigated as well as their association with the microstructure of the nanomaterials.

FINDINGS

Delicately tuned hydrogen bonds between the peptides and π-π interaction between PDI cores in different solvents enable the formation of assemblies with multifarious microstructures such as small spherical aggregates, nanowires with uniform diameter, nanobelts, and irregular aggregates. The maximum amount of photocurrent enhancement is up to 1.08 µA observed for the nanobelt, four times higher than that of irregular aggregates. However, the nanowires show the best performance of 7.1-fold in response to ammonia. Thus, the photoelectric performances are strongly dependent on the the molecular arrangement within the nanomaterials.

Solvent Effects in Supramolecular Chemistry: Linear Free Energy Relationships for Common Intermolecular Interactions

The proper choice of solvent is of major importance for all studies in supramolecular chemistry, including molecular recognition in host-guest systems, intramolecular folding, self-assembly, and supramolecular polymerization. In this Perspective, the usefulness of linear free energy relationships (LFERs) is highlighted to unravel the effect of solvents on coordinate bonding (e.g., cation-crown ether), hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding, dipolar aggregation, and π-π-stacking. For all of these intermolecular interactions widely applied in supramolecular systems, LFER relationships between the Gibbs binding energies and common solvent polarity scales including E_T(30), π*, α or β based on solvatochromic dyes, scales derived from binding processes such as Gutmann donor and acceptor numbers or hydrogen bond donor and acceptor scales, or physical functions like the Kirkwood-Onsager or the Liptay-Onsager functions could be demonstrated. These relationships can now be applied toward a better understanding of the prevailing intermolecular forces for supramolecular interactions. They further enable a rational selection of the most suitable solvent for the preparation of self-assembled materials and the estimation of binding constants without the need for time-consuming comprehensive investigations of solvents.

Atomistic simulation studies of ionic cyanine dyes: self-assembly and aggregate formation in aqueous solution

Cyanine dyes are known to form large-scale aggregates of various morphologies via spontaneous self-assembly in aqueous solution, akin to chromonic liquid crystals. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on four cyanine dyes: pseudoisocyanine chloride (PIC), pinacyanol chloride (PCYN), 5,5',6,6'-tetrachloro-1,1',3,3'-tetraethylbenzimidazolylcarbocyanine chloride (TTBC) and 1,1'-disulfopropyl-3,3'-diethyl-5,5',6,6'-tetrachloro-benzimidazolylcarbocyanine sodium salt (BIC). Simulations employed an optimised general AMBER force field and demonstrate the organisation of the dyes into stacked structures at dilute concentrations. The thermodynamics of self-assembly was studied by calculating potentials of mean force for n-mers (n = 2, 3 or 4), from which the free energies of association are determined. We report binding free energies in the range of 8 to 15k_BT for dimerisation, concordant with typical values for ionic chromonics (7 to 14k_BT), and examine the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the aggregation process. The self-assembly of these dyes yields two distinct classes of structures. We observe the formation of H-aggregate stacks for PCYN, with further complexity in these assemblies for PIC; where the aggregates contain shift and Y junction defects. TTBC and BIC associate into a J-aggregate sheet structure of unimolecular thickness, and is composed of a brickwork arrangement between molecules. These sheet structures are characteristic of the smectic chromonic mesophase, and such assemblies provide a route to the emergence of nanoscale tubular architectures.

Deciphering the evolution of supramolecular nanofibers in solution and solid-state: a combined microscopic and spectroscopic approach

Supramolecular self-assembly of small organic molecules has emerged as a powerful tool to construct well-defined micro- and nanoarchitecture through fine-tuning a range of intermolecular interactions. The size, shape, and optical properties of these nanostructures largely depend on the specific assembly of the molecular building units, temperature and polarity of the medium, and external stimuli. The engineering of supramolecular self-assembled nanostructures with morphology-dependent tunable emission is in high demand due to the promising scope in nanodevices and molecular machines. However, probing the evolution of molecular aggregates from the solution and directing the self-assembly process in a pre-defined fashion are challenging. In the present study, we have deciphered the sequential evolution of supramolecular nanofibers from solution to spherical and oblong-shaped nanoparticles through the variation of solvent polarity, tuning the hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions. An intriguing case of molecular self-assembly has been elucidated employing a newly designed π-conjugated thiophene derivative (TPAn) through a combination of steady-state absorption, emission measurements, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and electron microscopy. The FCS analysis and microscopy results revealed that the small-sized nanofibers in the dispersion further agglomerated upon solvent evaporation, resulting in a network of nanofibers. Stimuli-responsive reversible interconversion between a network of nanofibers and spherical nanoaggregates was probed both in dispersion and solvent-evaporated state. The evolution of organic nanofibers and a subtle control over the self-assembly process demonstrated in the current investigation provide a general paradigm to correlate the size, shape, and emission properties of fluorescent molecular aggregates in complex heterogeneous media, including a human cell.

Bright and Robust Phosphorescence Achieved by Non-Covalent Clipping

Phosphorescent materials with bright emission in versatile media are important for their practical applications, which require to lower the susceptibility of triplet excitons to surroundings. Herein a non-covalent clipping strategy has been developed to attain this objective, by designing a tweezer receptor to encapsulate Pt^II -based triplet emitters through two-fold π-stacking interactions. The Pt^II emitters display robust phosphorescence by virtue of synergistic rigidifying and shielding effects, which are hardly influenced by emitter concentration, oxygen content, and solvent polarity changes. The phosphorescent colors are elaborately modulated by varying ligand substitutes on Pt^II emitters. Circularly polarized phosphorescence is further amplified for chiral Pt^II emitters, by taking advantage of dual phosphorescence and chirality enhancement upon non-covalent tweezer complexation. Overall, the clipping approach paves the way for the development of high-performance phosphorescent materials with bright emission, environmental robustness, and facile color tunability.

Singlet Fission in a Flexible Bichromophore with Structural and Dynamic Control

Singlet fission (SF), i.e., the splitting of a high-energy exciton into two lower-energy triplet excitons, has the potential to increase the efficiency for harvesting spectrally broad light. The path from the photopopulated singlet state to free triplets is complicated by competing processes that decrease the overall SF efficiency. A detailed understanding of the whole cascade and the nature of the photoexcited singlet state is still a major challenge. Here, we introduce a pentacene dimer with a flexible crown ether spacer enabling a control of the interchromophore coupling upon solvent-induced self-aggregation as well as cation binding. The systematic change of solvent polarity and viscosity and excitation wavelength, as well as the available conformational phase space, allows us to draw a coherent picture of the whole SF cascade from the femtosecond to microsecond time scales. High coupling leads to ultrafast SF (<2 ps), independent of the solvent polarity, and to highly coupled correlated triplet pairs. The absence of a polarity effect indicates that the solvent coordinate does not play a significant role and that SF is driven by intramolecular modes. Low coupling results in much slower SF (∼500 ps), which depends on viscosity, and leads to weakly coupled correlated triplet pairs. These two triplet pairs could be spectrally distinguished and their contribution to the overall SF efficiency, i.e., to the population of free triplets, could be determined. Our results reveal how the overall SF efficiency can be increased by conformational restrictions and control of the structural fluctuation dynamics.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) and oligo(dimethylsiloxane) solvent effects on aromatic donor-acceptor interactions

Solvents with a wide range of polarities, including poly(dimethylsiloxane) and oligo(dimethylsiloxane), were used to evaluate aromatic donor-acceptor interactions between pyrene and pyromellitic diimide derivatives. The donor-acceptor interactions were stronger in siloxane solvents than in aliphatic solvents, possibly because of the poor solubility of the aromatics in siloxanes.

Giant spin pumping at the ferromagnet (permalloy) – organic semiconductor (perylene diimide) interface

Pure spin current based devices have attracted great interest in recent days. Spin current injection into non-magnetic materials is essential for the design and development of such pure spin current based devices. In this context, organic semiconductors (OSCs) can be potential non-magnetic materials over widely explored heavy metals. This is due to the relatively low spin–orbit coupling of OSCs, which is essential to host the spin current with a large spin diffusion length and long spin-relaxation time. This research work demonstrates the harvesting of spin currents at the perylene diimide (PDI)/permalloy (Py) based OSC interface. The observed high linewidth broadening of 2.18 mT from the ferromagnetic resonance spectra indicates the presence of giant spin pumping from Py to PDI. The resultant spin-mixing conductance, 1.54 × 10¹⁸ m⁻² quantifies the amount of spin current injected from Py to PDI, which is in a similar range to ferromagnet/heavy metals.

The spin injection from permalloy into an adjacent perylene diimide (PDI) layer is demonstrated via ferromagnetic resonance associated linewidth broadening. The spin mixing conductance is found to be 1.54×10¹⁸ m⁻² in a similar range to FM/heavy metal.

Supramolecular Chirogenesis Induced by Platinum(II) Tweezers with Excellent Environmental Tolerance

Supramolecular chirogenesis has emerged as an effective strategy to access symmetry breaking in artificial systems. However, the chirogenic signals suffer from high susceptibility toward environmental variations. An effective strategy has been developed to address this issue by constructing platinum(II)-based tweezer/guest complexes stabilized by two-fold donor-acceptor and Pt^II -Pt^II metal-metal interactions. Upon guest encapsulation, the two pincers on the achiral Pt^II tweezer undergo a stereospecific twist to minimize steric repulsion, thus locking tweezer/guest complexes into the preferred chiral conformations. The induced chiroptical effects display outstanding solvent and temperature tolerance, ascribed to the balance between electrostatic and desolvation effects for the involved non-covalent interactions. Moreover, hierarchical and multi-component supramolecular assembly of tweezer/guest complexes provide a convenient way to modulate chirogeneic signals for their intensities.
