Abstract
A new amphiphilic azo-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) derivative was synthesized by functionalizing octa(3-aminopropyl)silsesquioxane (OAS-POSS) with 4-((4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)benzoic acid, affording a hydrophilic amino POSS head and hydrophobic dodecyl tail with a diphenyl-azo connector. Prepared amphiphilic azo-functionalized POSS (azo-POSS) exhibited high ability for encapsulation and transferring cationic dyes into the organic phase by vigorously mixing with aqueous solutions of each dye. The photo-controlled encapsulating properties of the synthesized phase transfer reagent was studied using cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and thymol blue in acidic conditions. Results showed more than 95 % encapsulation of MB. However, no considerable encapsulation was shown in the case of anionic dyes such as eriochrome black T (EBT) and thymol blue in alkaline solutions. By trans/cis isomerization of the azo moiety of the phase transfer reagent by UV irradiation (365 nm), the amount of dye encapsulation was decreased, which could be attributed to the formation of cis isomer that led to the folding of the dodecyl alkyl tail on the POSS moiety, and therefore prevent to lay the 3-aminopropyl moieties of POSS head to the water/DCM interface to adsorb and encapsulate MB molecules.

Abstract
A synthesis of a series of mono-T8 and difunctionalized double-decker silsesquioxanes bearing substituted triazole ring(s) has been reported within this work. The catalytic protocol for their formation is based on the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) process. Diverse alkynes were in the scope of our interest-i.e., aryl, hetaryl, alkyl, silyl, or germyl-and the latter was shown to be the first example of terminal germane alkyne which is reactive in the applied process' conditions. From the pallet of 15 compounds, three of them with pyridine-triazole and thiophenyl-triazole moiety attached to T8 or DDSQ core were verified in terms of their coordinating properties towards selected transition metals, i.e., Pd(II), Pt(II), and Rh(I). The studies resulted in the formation of four SQs based coordination compounds that were obtained in high yields up to 93% and their thorough spectroscopic characterization is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first example of the DDSQ-based molecular complex possessing bidentate pyridine-triazole ligand binding two Pd(II) ions.

Abstract
The recent demand for fluorescent-labeled materials (FLMs) in forensic security concepts such as latent fingerprints (LFs) that encode information for anti-counterfeiting and encryption of confidential data makes necessary the development of building new and innovative materials. Here, novel FLMs based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) functionalized with fluorophores via "click" reactions have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized. A comprehensive study of their photophysical properties has displayed large Stokes's shift together with good photostability in all cases, fulfilling the fundamental requisites for any legible LF detection on various surfaces. The excellent performance of the hetero-bifunctional FLM in the visualization of LF is emphasized by their legibility, selectivity, sensitivity and temporal photostability. In this study, development mechanisms have been proposed and the overall concept constitute a novel approach for vis-à-vis forensic investigations to trace an individual's identity.

Abstract
The thermal and mechanical properties of polysiloxane foam are greatly improved by the addition of acrylolsobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA0701, hereinafter referred to as MAPOSS), which has double bonds. The morphologies and properties of the polysiloxane composite foam were characterized. The average cell diameter of the composite foams decreased, while the cell density increased with increasing MAPOSS. Meanwhile, MAPOSS can enhance thermal conductivity and thermal stability. Thermal conductivity increased by 25%, and the temperature at the maximum weight loss rate increased from 556 °C to 599 °C. In addition, MAPOSS also promoted heterogeneous nucleation by functioning as a nucleating agent, which can increase cell density to improve the mechanical properties. The compressive strength of the composite foam increased by 170% compared with that of pure foam. In the composite, MAPOSS increased the cross-linking density by acting as a physical cross-linking point and limited the movement of the segments.

Abstract
An efficient process for the synthesis of degradable hydrogels containing octa-betaine ester polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) through efficient thiol-ene and Menschutkin click reactions was developed. The hydrogels exhibited a yield strength of 0.36 MPa and a compressive modulus of 4.38 MPa and displayed excellent flexibility as well as torsion resistance. Antibacterial efficacy of hydrogels (and degradation products) was evaluated using Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). Efficacy was found to increase with the concentration of cetyl chloroacetate (CCA) in the hydrogel network, reaching 93% and 99% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Degradation of hydrogels was observed in weak alkali conditions (pH = 8) and at physiological conditions (pH = 7.4). The degradation time of the hydrogels could be finely tuned by variation of the CCA content in the hydrogel and environmental stimulus. The tunable degradation behavior under physiological conditions combined with high antibacterial efficacy could render the presented materials interesting for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has drawn extensive attention as a promising cancer treatment modality. However, most PDT nanoagents suffer from insufficient drug loading capacity, a severe self-quenching effect, premature release of drugs and/or potential toxicity. Herein, we rationally designed an inorganic-organic nanohybrid with high drug loading capacity and superior chemical stability for enhanced PDT. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), an amine-containing cage-shaped building block, was crosslinked with chlorin e6 (Ce6), a carboxyl-containing photosensitizer, via the amine-carboxyl reaction. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers were further modified on the surface of the nanoparticle to improve the aqueous dispersibility and prolong the circulation time of the final nanoconstruct (POSS-Ce6-PEG). The as-prepared POSS-Ce6-PEG has a considerably high loading rate of Ce6 (19.8 wt%) with desirable fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen generation. Besides, in vitro experiments revealed that the nanoagent exhibited enhanced cellular uptake and a preferred intracellular accumulation within mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, resulting in high anticancer efficiency under light irradiation. Furthermore, in vivo imaging-guided PDT was also successfully achieved, showing the effective tumor targeting and ablation ability of POSS-Ce6-PEG. More importantly, the nanoagent possesses negligible dark cytotoxicity and systemic side effects. Therefore, POSS-Ce6-PEG as an eligible PDT theranostic agent holds great potential in clinical applications.

Abstract
Three polysiloxane/epoxy hybrids obtained by evolving cage- or linear-structured polysiloxane into poly glycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) matrix are compared used as coatings. One is the cage-structured hybrid of P(GMA/MA-POSS) copolymer obtained by GMA and methacrylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA-POSS) via free radical polymerization, the other two are PGMA/NH2-POSS and PGMA/NH2-PDMS hybrids by cage-structured aminopropyllsobutyl POSS (NH2-POSS) or linear-structured diamino terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (NH2-PDMS) to cure PGMA. The effect of MA-POSS, NH2-POSS and NH2-PDMS on polysiloxane/epoxy hybrid films is characterized according to their surface morphology, transparency, permeability, adhesive strength and thermo-mechanical properties. Due to caged POSS tending to agglomerate onto the film surface, P(GMA/MA-POSS) and PGMA/NH2-POSS films exhibit much more heterogeneous surfaces than PGMA/NH2-PDMS film, but the well-compatibility between epoxy matrix and MA-POSS has provided P(GMA/MA-POSS) film with much higher transmittance (98%) than PGMA/NH2-POSS film (24%), PGMA/NH2-PDMS film (27%) and traditional epoxy resin film (5%). The introduction of polysiloxane into epoxy matrix is confirmed to create hybrids with strong adhesive strength (526-1113N) and high thermos-stability (Tg=262-282°C), especially the cage-structured P(GMA/MA-POSS) hybrid (1113N and 282°C), but the flexible PDMS improves PGMA/NH2-PDMS hybrid with much higher storage modulus (519MPa) than PGMA/NH2-POSS (271MPa), which suggests that PDMS is advantage in improving the film stiffness than POSS cages. However, cage-structured P(GMA/MA-POSS) and PGMA/NH2-POSS indicate higher permeability than PGMA/NH2-PDMS and traditional epoxy resin. Comparatively, the cage-structured P(GMA/MA-POSS) hybrid is the best coating in transparency, permeability, adhesive strength and thermostability, but linear-structured PGMA/NH2-PDMS hybrid behaviors the best coating in mechanical property.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate a facile methodology to synthesis a novel methacrylic phosphonic acid (PA)-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) via thiol-ene click reaction using octamercapto thiol-POSS and ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (EGMP) monomer. The presence of phosphonic acid moieties and POSS-cage structure in POSS-S-PA was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H, 29Si and 31P-NMR) analyses. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrum of POSS-S-PA acquired in a dithranol matrix, which has specifically designed for intractable polymeric materials. The observed characterization results signposted that novel organo-inorganic hybrid POSS-S-PA would be an efficacious material for fuel cells as a proton exchange membrane and high-temperature applications due to its thermal stability of 380 °C.

Abstract
Hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) (HPAMAM), structurally analogous to polyamidoamine dendrimer (PAMAM) dendrimers, has been suggested to be an effective carrier for gene delivery. In the present study, glutamic acid-modified hPAMAM was developed as a novel non-viral gene carrier for the first time. The hPAMAM was synthesized by using a modified one-pot method. DNA was found to be bound to hPAMAM at different weight ratios (WhPAMAM/WDNA). The resulting HPAMAM-Glu20 was able to efficiently protect the encapsulated-DNA against degradation for over 2 h. In addition to low cytotoxicity, the transfection efficiency of hPAMAM-Glu20 represented much higher (p < 0.05) than that of Lipofectamine 2000 in both MCF7 and MDA-MB231 cells. Cellular uptake of the hPAMAM-Glu20 in MDA-MB231 cells, 173.56 ± 1.37%, was significantly higher than that of MCF7 cells, 65.00 ± 1.73% (p < 0.05). The results indicated that hPAMAM-Glu20-mediated gene delivery to breast cancer cells is a feasible and effective strategy that may provide a new therapeutic avenue as a non-viral gene delivery carrier. In addition, it was found that hPAMAM-glutamic amino acid (Glu)-based gene delivery is an economical, effective and biocompatible method.

Hybrid Mesoporous Silicas and Microporous POSS-Based Frameworks Incorporating Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly. NANOMATERIALS 2015; 5:1087-1101. Abstract
We fabricated a series of mesoporous silicas and mesoporous organosilicates with hierarchical porosity through evaporation-induced self-assembly using Pluronic F127 as a template in this study. We could tailor the mesophase of each mesoporous silica sample by varying the weight ratio of its two silica sources: tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and triethoxysilane hydrosilylated octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OV-POSS-SILY). The mesophases ranged from an ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) structure (TEOS alone) to ordered face-centered cubic (fcc) structure (10 and 20 wt.% of OV-POSS-SILY) and finally to disordered spherical pores (≥30 wt.% of OV-POSS-SILY). We used small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the transformations of these mesophases, while N2 isotherm sorption curves revealed the porosities of these mesoporous silicate samples. Moreover, 29Si CP/MAS solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy allowed us to analyze the compositions of the POSS-containing silicate frameworks. Such functional mesoporous silica samples incorporating microporous POSS building units have potential applications in various systems, including optical and electronic devices.

Abstract
An enzyme-free electrochemical immunosensor based on the host-guest nanonets of N,N-bis(ferrocenoyl)-diaminoethane/β-cyclodextrins/poly(amidoamine) dendrimer-encapsulated Au nanoparticles (Fc-Fc/β-CD/PAMAM-Au) for procalcitonin (PCT) detection has been developed in this study. The signal probe was constructed as follows: amine-terminated β-CD was adsorbed to PAMAM-Au first, and then the prepared Fc-Fc was recognized by the β-CD to form stable host-guest nanonets. Next, secondary antibodies (Ab2) were attached into the formed netlike nanostructure of Fc-Fc/β-CD/PAMAM-Au by chemical absorption between PAMAM-Au and -NH2 of β-CD. Herein, the PAMAM-Au act not only as nanocarriers for anchoring large amounts of the β-CD and Ab2 but also as nanocatalysts to catalyze the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) for signal amplification. Moreover, the Fc-Fc could be stably immobilized by the hydrophobic inner cavity of β-CD as well as improving solubility by the hydrophilic exterior of β-CD. With the unique structure of two ferrocene units, Fc-Fc not only affords more electroactive groups to make the electrochemical response more sensitive but also plays a role of combining dispersive β-CD-functionalized PAMAM-Au to form the netlike nanostructure. Furthermore, Fc-Fc exhibits good catalytic activity for AA oxidation. When the detection solution contained AA, the synergetic catalysis of PAMAM-Au and Fc-Fc to AA oxidation could be obtained, realizing enzyme-free signal amplification. The proposed immunosensor provided a linear range from 1.80 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL for PCT detection and a detection limit of 0.36 pg/mL under optimal experimental conditions. Moreover, the immunosensor has shown potential application in clinical detection of PCT.

Abstract
Dual clickable nanospheres (DCNSs) were synthesized in one step using an efficient approach of ultrasonic-assisted azide-alkyne click polymerization, avoiding the need of surfactants. This novel approach presents a direct clickable monomer-to-nanosphere synthesis. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and dynamic laser scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the synthesized DCNSs. Numerous terminal alkynyl and azide groups on the surface of DCNSs facilitate effective conjugation of multiple molecules or ligands onto a single nanocarrier platform under mild conditions. To exemplify the potential of DCNSs in biological applications, (1) multivalent glyconanoparticles (GNPs) were prepared by clicking DCNSs with azide-functionalized and alkyne-functionalized lactose sequentially for the determination of carbohydrate-galectin interactions with quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor. Using protein chip (purified galectin-3 coated on chip) and cell chip (Jurkat cells immobilized on chip), the QCM sensorgrams showed excellent binding activity of GNPs for galectins; (2) fluorescent GNPs were prepared by clicking DCNSs with azide-functionalized Rhodamine B and alkyne-functionalized lactose sequentially in order to target galectin, which is overexpressed on the surface of Jurkat cells. The fluorescent images obtained clearly showed the cellular internalization of fluorescent GNPs. This fluorescent probe could be easily adapted to drugs to construct lectin-targeted drug delivery systems. Thus, DCNSs prepared with our method may provide a wide range of potential applications in glycobiology and biomedicine.

Abstract
Head diversification of shape amphiphiles not only broadens the scope of supramolecular engineering for new self-organizing materials but also facilitates their potential applications in high technologies. In this letter, T10 azido-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle was used to construct new shape amphiphiles via sequential "click" chemistry for addressing two issues: (1) new symmetry of T10 POSS head could enrich the self-assembly behaviors of shape amphiphiles, and (2) copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC)-based head functionalization strategy allows the introduction of diverse functionalities onto POSS heads, including bulky ligands (i.e., isobutyl POSS) and UV-attenuating ones (i.e., ferrocene and 4-cyano-4'-biphenyl). This study expands the library of POSS-based shape amphiphiles with numerous possibilities for head manipulations, offering an important step toward new shape amphiphiles beyond traditional hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature for potential applications in giant molecule-based nanoscience and technology.
