Bisindeno Fusion on the Zigzag Edge of Bis(benzooxa)-2,6-anthraquinodimethane: Effect on Diradical Character, Photostability, and Redox Properties

We report the synthesis of the bis(benzooxa)-2,6-anthraquinodimethane (BAQ) derivative and its bisindeno fused analogue BIBAQ. We found bisindeno fusion on the quinoidal zigzag edge of BAQ results in decreased diradical character and corresponding increased photostability. Furthermore, BAQ could only be oxidized into its cationic species, while BIBAQ showed balanced redox properties.

Indenoannulated Tridecacyclene: An All-Carbon Seven-Stage Redox-Amphoter

We disclose an indenoannulated tridecacyclene comprising a central cyclooctatetraene moiety with multiple adjacent pentagonal rings which is accessible in a concise synthetic sequence. The saddle-shaped geometry of the non-benzenoid polycyclic scaffold and its unique packing behavior in the solid state were characterized by X-ray crystallography. In electrochemical studies, the compound undergoes seven reversible redox events comprising five reductions and two oxidations. The dicationic and dianionic species obtained by chemical oxidation and reduction, respectively, were characterized spectroscopically in solution. Density functional theory calculations were applied to provide insights into aromaticity evolution in the respective charged species, highlighting the beneficial effect of the non-benzenoid moieties on charge stabilization.

Straightforward Synthesis of Pentagon-Embedded Expanded [11]Helicenes for Radiative Cooling Property

Two new pentagon-embedded carbo[11]helicenes have been designed and synthesized in a three-step process, which are the first example of carbo[11]helicenes through the post-functionalization of twistacene. TD-DFT analyses indicate that both of them possess high enantiomerization barriers of 42.29 kcal/mol and 40.76 kcal/mol, respectively. They emit strong red fluorescence and can be chemically oxidized into stable cationic radicals upon addition of AgSbF6 evidenced by the bathochromic-shifted absorption spectra and the appearance of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals. In addition, such helical derivatives can be chosen as radiative cooling materials in a glass model house, and the maxima of 5.4 °C for the former and 6.5 °C for the latter are found in the comparative tests, which might be caused by the NIR reflective response.

Functionalization of Pentacene: A Facile and Versatile Approach to Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

In this work, a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) starting from the functionalized pentacene was established. A series of novel PAHs 1-4 and their derivatives were synthesized through a simple two-step synthesis procedure involving an intramolecular reductive Friedel-Crafts cyclization of four newly synthesized pentacene aldehydes 5-8 as a key step. All the molecules were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied in detail. Interestingly, the most striking feature of 1-4 is their highly contorted carbon structures and the accompanying helical chirality. In particular, the optical resolution of 2 was successfully achieved by chiral-phase HPLC, and the enantiomers were characterized by circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy. Despite the highly nonplanar conformations, these contorted PAHs exhibited emissive properties with moderate-to-good fluorescence quantum yields, implying the potential utility of this series PAHs as high-quality organic laser dyes. By using a self-assembly method with the help of epoxy resin, a bottle microlaser based on 3 a was successfully illustrated with a lasing wavelength of 567.8 nm at a threshold of 0.3 mJ/cm2 . We believe that this work will shed light on the chemical versatility of pentacene and its derivatives in the construction of novel functionalized PAHs.

Synthesis and Properties of Rubicene-Based Aromatic π-Conjugated Compounds as Five-Membered Ring Embedded Planar Nanographenes

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consisting of two or three rubicene substructures were designed as π-conjugated compounds embedding five-membered rings. The target compounds with t-butyl groups were synthesized by the Scholl reaction of precursors consisting of 9,10-diphenylanthracene units, even though a partially precyclized precursor was required for the synthesis of the trimer. These compounds were isolated as stable and dark blue solids. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed the planar aromatic framework of these compounds. In the electronic spectra, the absorption and emission bands were considerably red-shifted compared with those of the reference rubicene compound. In particular, the emission band of the trimer extended to the near-IR region while retaining the emissive property. The narrowed HOMO-LUMO gap with the extension of the π-conjugation was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations.

Azaarenes: 13 Rings in a Row by Cyclopentannulation

Cyclopentannulation was explored as a strategy to access large, stable azaarenes. Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of previously reported di- and tetrabrominated cyclopentannulated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacenes furnished stable azaarenes with up to 13 six-membered rings in a row and a length of 3.1 nm. Their optoelectronic and semi-conducting properties as well as their aromaticity were investigated.

Substituted Cyclopentannulated Tetraazapentacenes

Brominated pentannulated dihydrotetraazapentacenes were prepared by gold- or palladium-catalyzed 5-endo-dig cyclization of TIPS-ethynylated dihydrotetraazaacenes (TIPS = triisopropylsilyl). Post-functionalization was demonstrated by Sonogashira alkynylation and Rosenmund-von Braun cyanation. Calculations predict these species to act as n-type semiconductors, which was verified for two derivates through characterization in organic field-effect transistors.

π-Extended S-Heterocyclic Naphthoquinodimethane with Dual Diradical and Dipolar Character

The 2,6-naphthoquinodimethane (2,6-NQDM) containing S-heterocyclic molecule 6-S was synthesized, and its dual open-shell diradical and dipolar characters were revealed via both experimental and theoretical studies. Unlike the shorter p-quinodimethane (p-QDM)-containing analogue 5-S, which possesses a closed-shell ground state (y₀ = 0%) with small dipolar character, 6-S possesses enhanced dipolar character with a singlet diradical ground state (y₀ = 23.3%) and a thermally accessible triplet excited state (ΔE_ST = -4.13 kcal/mol). Despite this, it displays good stability (t_1/2 = 41days) under ambient air and light conditions due to its distinctive dipolar character and kinetic blocking of reactive sites.

Rubicene, an Unusual Contorted Core for Discotic Liquid Crystals

Rubicene, an unusual contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, was realized to function as a novel core fragment for discotic liquid crystals. The central π-conjugated motif was prepared from dialkoxyiodobenzene via Sonagashira coupling followed by pentannulation and Scholl cyclodehydrogenation. The synthesized rubicene derivatives were found to be thermally stable and exhibit enantiotropic columnar mesophases. The columnar arrangement of these derivatives has been validated using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry & small-angle X-ray scattering.

Cyclopentannulated Dihydrotetraazapentacenes

The transition-metal-catalyzed cyclization of bissilylethynylated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacene (TIPS-TAP-H2 ) into bissilylated cyclopenta[fg,qr]pentacenes is reported. Depending on the catalyst either none, one or two silyl groups migrate and change their positions in the formed five-membered rings. The optoelectronic properties are quite similar, whereas the packing motifs differ dramatically. Control experiments and quantum chemical calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism of the reaction and the selectivity of the silyl shift.

Corannulene-based acenes

Synthesis of diacenes still represents a considerable challenge due to their poor stability and low solubility.

Pd-Catalyzed Indolization/peri-C-H Annulation/N-Dealkylation Cascade to Cyclopenta-Fused Acenaphtho[1,2-b]indole Scaffold

A novel Pd-catalyzed cascade reaction of N,N-dialkyl-substituted o-alkynylanilines involving an indolization/peri-C-H annulation/N-dealkylation sequence has been developed to construct a cyclopenta-fused acenaphtho[1,2-b]indole (ANI) scaffold. A variety of aromatic hydrocarbons having a peri-C-H bond at the alkynyl terminus, such as naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene, were employed, affording the corresponding π-extended ANI derivatives. The ANI molecules showed relatively narrow energy gaps by increasing HOMOs and lowering LUMOs, implying their potential applications as π-segments in low-band-gap materials.

Construction of Heptagon-Containing Molecular Nanocarbons

Molecular nanocarbons containing heptagonal rings have attracted increasing interest due to their dynamic behavior, electronic properties, aromaticity, and solid-state packing. Heptagon incorporation can not only induce negative curvature within nanocarbon scaffolds, but also confer significantly altered properties through interaction with adjacent non-hexagonal rings. Despite the disclosure of several beautiful examples in recent years, synthetic strategies toward heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons remain relatively limited due to the intrinsic challenges of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks. In this Review, recent advances in solution-mediated and surface-assisted synthesis of heptagon-containing molecular nanocarbons, as well as the intriguing properties of these frameworks, will be discussed.

Domino Cross-Scholl Reaction of Tetracene with Molecular Benzene: Synthesis, Structure, and Mechanism

A domino-type multiple C-H functionalization of tetracene with molecular benzene is reported. Under the typical conditions of the Scholl reaction, a domino reaction occurs between tetracene and six molecules of benzene in one pot to furnish an aromatic compound with a curved π-system. This reaction sequence involves oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling/annulation and Friedel-Crafts-type reactions. Eight C-C bonds are formed via this intermolecular domino reaction without mediation by a metal or the assistance of a specific substituent.

Double π-Extended Helicene Derivatives Containing Pentagonal Rings: Synthesis, Crystal Analyses, and Photophysics

Two novel double π-extended [n]helicene (n = 5, 6) derivatives (7b and 9) including pentagonal rings have been synthesized and characterized. Both of them have three isomers containing two enantiomers (P₆), (M₆), and a diastereoisomer in a meso form (P,M). X-ray single crystal analyses suggest that molecules 7b and 9 exhibit offset packing models of (P₆,P₅)- and (M₆,M₅)-isomers. Optical resolution of the resultant compound 7b was finished, and their chiroptical properties, as well as the DFT calculations, were also examined.

Scholl reaction as a powerful tool for the synthesis of nanographenes: a systematic review

Nanographenes, or extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, have been attracting increasing attention owing to their widespread applications in organic electronics. However, the atomically precise fabrication of nanographenes has thus far been achieved only through synthetic organic chemistry. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are popular research subjects due to their high stability, rigid planar structure, and characteristic optical spectra. The recent discovery of graphene, which can be regarded as giant PAH, has further stimulated research interest in this area. Chemists working with nanographene and heterocyclic analogs thereof have chosen it as their preferred tool for the assembly of large and complex architectures. The Scholl reaction has maintained significant relevance in contemporary organic synthesis with many advances in recent years and now ranks among the most useful C-C bond-forming processes for the generation of the π-conjugated frameworks of nanographene or their heterocyclic analogs. A broad range of oxidants and Lewis acids have found use in Scholl-type processes, including Cu(OTf)2/AlCl3, FeCl3, MoCl5, PIFA/BF3-Et2O, and DDQ, in combination with Brønsted or Lewis acids, and the surface-mediated reaction has found especially wide applications in PAH synthesis. Undoubtedly, the utility of the Scholl reaction is supreme in the construction of nanographene and their heterocyclic analogues. The detailed analysis of the progress achieved in this field reveals that many groups have contributed by pushing the boundary of structural possibilities, expanding into surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation and developing new reagents. In this review, we highlight and discuss the recent modifications in the Scholl reaction for nanographene synthesis using numerous oxidant systems. In addition, the merits or demerits of each oxidative reagent is described herein.

Pentagon-Containing π-Expanded Systems: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

We have designed and synthesized three novel twistacene-modified enlarged pentagon-containing π-systems (6 and 9) with mismatched structures. The introduction of electron-withdrawing cyclopenta rings in the parent skeleton effectively stabilizes the electron-rich arenes. Their optoelectronic properties were studied via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In addition, chemical oxidation of the as-prepared compounds with nitrosonium hexafluoroantimonate could form the corresponding cationic radicals.

Scholl Reaction of Perylene-Based Polyphenylene Precursors under Different Conditions: Formation of Hexagon or Octagon?

A planar dibenzo-peri-hexacene derivative (2) was synthesized via FeCl₃ -mediated Scholl reaction from a cyclopenta-fused perylene (CP) based polyphenylene precursor (1). However, an unexpected octagon-containing, negatively curved molecule (3) was obtained in nearly quantitative yield when 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and methanesulfonic acid (MeSO₃ H) were used. Similar results were observed when two smaller-sized precursors containing one (4) or two CP units (5) were tested. X-ray crystallographic analysis also revealed that there is no close π-π stacking between neighboring π-conjugated skeletons. DFT calculations suggest a radical cation mechanism in the presence of FeCl₃ while an arenium ion pathway for the DDQ/MeSO₃ H mediated Scholl reaction, which can well explain the selective formation of hexagons and octagons under different conditions. The obtained compounds showed tunable optical and electrochemical properties.

A Tetraindeno-Fused Bis(anthraoxa)quinodimethane with Nine Consecutively Fused Six-Membered Rings

A tetraindeno-fused bis(anthraoxa)quinodimethane RBR with nine consecutively fused six-membered rings in a row was synthesized. Its structure was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR measurement. Compared with an unfused analogue ABA, the indeno fusion onto the zigzag edges not only enhanced the photostability but also dramatically tuned the electronic properties. Due to the existence of two rubicene units, RBR can also be readily reduced to form a radical anion and dianion.

Synthesis of a Highly Fluorescent Bis(1,4-oxaborine)pentacene

1,4-Oxaborines represent an expansion of the current array of heteroborines. Herein, we report a new ladder-type bis(1,4-oxaborine)pentacene (BO-Pen), the backbone of which can be regarded as an isoelectronic structure of pentacene. The synthesis begins with a two-fold nucleophilic aromatic substitution followed by a ring-closing reaction. The structure was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Compound BO-Pen is stable (even after 160 h) under ambient condition and exhibits very different electronic properties as compared to its all-carbon pentacene analogue (Pen-M). Particularly, it shows bright photoluminescence (73 % relative quantum yield) in both solution and in solid state.

Hysteretic Three-State Redox Interconversion among Zigzag Bisquinodimethanes with Non-fused Benzene Rings and Twisted Tetra-/Dications with [5]/[3]Acenes Exhibiting Near-Infrared Absorptions

Octaaryl-substituted bisquinodimethanes (BQDs) with a zigzag structure were designed as redox-switchable molecules that undergo four-electron oxidation to produce tetracationic pentacenes with a doubly twisted structure. In contrast to one-stage four-electron oxidation of BQDs, stepwise two-electron reduction of tetracationic pentacenes occurs to give dicationic anthracenes and then the original BQDs, step-by-step. Since both tetracations and dications exhibit near-infrared (NIR) absorptions (-1400 nm) based on an intramolecular charge-transfer interaction, changes in not only their structures but also their UV-vis-NIR spectra can be controlled by redox stimuli. In this Communication, we present an unprecedented one-step π-extension to pentacene from non-fused benzene rings by oxidation, and subsequent two-stage deannulation to benzene rings via anthracene upon reduction. All structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray analyses, and their properties were characterized by spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

Synthesis of a Sidewall Fragment of a (12,0) Carbon Nanotube

Synthesis of a carbon nanobelt (CNB) is a very challenging task in organic chemistry. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of an octabenzo[12]cyclacene based CNB (6), which can be regarded as a sidewall fragment of a (12,0) carbon nanotube. The key intermediate compound, a tetraepoxy nanobelt (5), was first synthesized by Diels-Alder reaction, and subsequent reductive aromatization gave the fully conjugated CNB 6. X-ray crystallographic analysis unambiguously confirmed the belt-shaped structure of 6. ¹ H NMR spectrum and theoretical calculations (ACID, NICS, and 2D/3D ICSS) revealed localized aromaticity and stronger shielding chemical environment in the inner region of the belt. The optical properties (absorption and emission) of 6 were studied and correlated to its electronic structure. Strain analysis indicates that the phenyl substituents at the zigzag edges are crucial to the successful synthesis of 6. This report presents a new strategy towards highly strained CNBs.

One-pot synthesis of dicyclopenta-fused peropyrene via a fourfold alkyne annulation

A novel dicyclopenta-fused peropyrene derivative 1 was synthesized via a palladium-catalyzed four-fold alkyne annulation of 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-2,7-diphenylpyrene (5) with diphenylacetylene. The annulative π-extension reaction toward 1 involved a twofold [3 + 2] cyclopentannulation and subsequent twofold [4 + 2] benzannulation. The structure of 1 is unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography; 1 adopted a twisted geometry due to the steric hindrance of the phenyl rings and the hydrogen substituents at the bay regions. Notably, compound 1 exhibits a narrow energy gap (1.78 eV) and a lower LUMO energy level than the parent peropyrene without the fusion of the five-membered rings. In addition, the effects of the peri-fused pentagons on the aromaticity and molecular orbitals of 1 were evaluated by theoretical calculations. This work presents an efficient method to develop π-extended aromatic hydrocarbons with cyclopenta moieties.

Synthetic Applications of Oxidative Aromatic Coupling-From Biphenols to Nanographenes

Oxidative aromatic coupling occupies a fundamental place in the modern chemistry of aromatic compounds. It is a method of choice for the assembly of large and bewildering architectures. Considerable effort was also devoted to applications of the Scholl reaction for the synthesis of chiral biphenols and natural products. The ability to form biaryl linkages without any prefunctionalization provides an efficient pathway to many complex structures. Although the chemistry of this process is only now becoming fully understood, this reaction continues to both fascinate and challenge researchers. This is especially true for heterocoupling, that is, oxidative aromatic coupling with the chemoselective formation of a C-C bond between two different arenes. Analysis of the progress achieved in this field since 2013 reveals that many groups have contributed by pushing the boundary of structural possibilities, expanding into surface-assisted (cyclo)dehydrogenation, and developing new reagents.

Acenes beyond organic electronics: sensing of singlet oxygen and stimuli-responsive materials

Although they are often detrimental in organic electronics, the cycloaddition reactions of acenes, especially with singlet oxygen, are useful in a range of responsive materials.

Functionalized Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by a One-Step Cyclopentannulation and Regioselective Triflyloxylation

The oxidative cyclodehydrogenation (often named the Scholl reaction) is still a powerful synthetic tool to construct even larger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by multiple biaryl bond formations without the necessity of prior installation of reacting functional groups. Scholl-type reactions are usually very selective although the resulting products bear sometimes some surprises, such as the formation of five-membered instead of six-membered rings or the unexpected migration of aryl moieties. There are a few examples, where chlorinated byproducts were found when FeCl₃ was used as reagent. To our knowledge, the direct functionalization of PAHs during Scholl-type cyclization by triflyloxylation has not been observed. Herein we describe the synthesis of functionalized PAHs by the formation of five-membered rings and a regioselective triflyloxylation in one step. The triflyloxylated PAHs can be used as reactants for further transformation to even larger contorted PAHs.

Dicyclopenta[ghi,pqr]perylene as a Structural Motif for Bowl-Shaped Hydrocarbons: Synthetic and Conformational Studies

Dicyclopenta[ghi,pqr]perylene (DCPP) is a substructural fragment on the surface of C₇₀ yet not on C₆₀. Unlike its intensely investigated buckybowl cousins, corannulene and sumanene, DCPP is largely ignored due to the lack of synthetic accessibility. This communication describes the first preparation of a DCPP derivative from bay substituted perylene bis(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)methanol as the key cyclization precursor. Further incorporation of indeno substitutions at peri positions was accomplished through Suzuki-Heck benzannulation. DCPP derivatives 4 adopts a planar structure in crystal. On the contrary, indeno DCPP 5 and bis-indeno DCPP 6 adopt the bowl-shaped conformation in both the solid state and solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the lowest-energy conformations of 4, 5, and 6 are all bowl-shaped. Nevertheless, small bowl-to-bowl inversion barrier for 4 (3.4 kcal/mol) is overcome by the crystal packing force, which leads to its observed planar structure. However, the bowl-shaped structures of 5 and 6 are affirmed by DFT calculation with intermediate and high bowl-to-bowl inversion barriers (10.4 and 18.5 kcal/mol, respectively).

The role of steric hindrance in the intramolecular oxidative aromatic coupling of pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles

The presence of steric hindrance triggers different reaction pathways in the intramolecular oxidative aromatic coupling of tetraaryl-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles and leads to the formation of a fluorene moiety and a new cationic π-system linked together by a spiro carbon atom. Computational studies elegantly rationalized these results. These previously unknown functional dyes emit red light with reasonable efficiency.

Low Bandgap Bistetracene-Based Organic Semiconductors Exhibiting Air Stability, High Aromaticity and Mobility

The benchmark of soluble organic semiconductors based on acenes is the 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-PEN). However TIPS-PEN still suffers from photoinduced oxidation due to its low degree of aromaticity. Increasing the aromaticity while keeping similar optical and electrochemical properties as well as a shape suitable for good hole transport can be achieved with two-dimensional polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (2D-PAHs). Herein, we present an efficient synthesis and characterization of bistetracene derivatives that exhibit a band gap up to 1.71 eV and an increased stability up to 21 times compared to TIPS-PEN and mobility over 0.1 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 in solution-processed organic field-effect transistors. Based on simple structural consideration, the high stability is attributed to the aromaticity of the bistetracene which is comparable to an anthrancene along each tetracene. According to Clar's sextet rule, the bistetracene should be best regarded as two anthracenes fused at the face bridged by two ethylenic spacers. The synthesis path paves the way towards the preparation of ambipolar and/or longer 2D-PAHs such as bispentacenes and could give rise to organic semiconductors with interesting properties.

Strategies for the Synthesis of Higher Acenes

The outstanding performance of pentacene-based molecules in molecular electronics, as well as the predicted enhanced semiconducting properties of extended acenes, have stimulated the development of new synthetic methods and functionalization strategies for the preparation of stable and soluble acenes larger than tetracene with the aim of obtaining improved functional materials.
