Pentafluorophenyl Copper-Biarylsulfoxide Complexes: Synthesis and Photoreactivity

Pentafluorophenyl copper(I)-biarylsulfoxide complexes, existing as [Cu(C6F5)]4L2, both in solution and in the solid state, were prepared and thoroughly characterized. Subsequently, the photochemistry of the complexes was explored, showing inherent photoreactivity of the biarylsulfoxide moiety within the coordination sphere of the copper. Photoinduced cross-coupling reactions between the anthryl moiety of bis-anthracenylsulfoxide and pentafluorobenzene, and synthesis of Cu2O (cuprite), were demonstrated.

Aryl Sulfoxides: A Traceless Directing Group for Catalytic C-H Activation of Arenes

The transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation of arenes directed by sulfoxides represents a compelling strategy in organic synthesis, owing to its exceptional regioselectivity and high efficiency. This innovative approach stands out for its traceless character, enabling the direct functionalization of arenes, before the easy removal or conversion of the key sulfinyl moiety. Beyond their utility as a directing group, sulfoxides have proved particularly valuable to mediate as chiral auxiliaries, presenting exciting prospects for the synthesis of stereo-enriched compounds upon C-H functionalization. The versatility demonstrated by the method paves the way to different structures with potential applications ranging from medicinal chemistry to organic electronics.

Template Synthesis of Cyclometalated Macrocycle Iridium(III) Complexes Based on Photoinduced C-N Cross-Coupling Reactions In Situ

The synthesis of metal macrocycle complexes holds paramount importance in coordination and supramolecular chemistry. Toward this end, we report a new, mild, and efficient protocol for the synthesis of cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes: [Ir(L1)](PF6) (1), [Ir(L2)](PF6) (2), and [Ir(L3)](PF6) (3), where L1 presents 10,17-dioxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclooctadecaphane, L2 is 10,13,16,19,22,25-hexaoxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexacosaphane, and L3 is 4-methyl-10,13,16,19,22,25-hexaoxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexacosaphane. This synthesis involves the preassembly of two symmetric 2-phenylquinoline arms into C-shape complexes, followed by cyclization with diamine via in situ interligand C-N cross-coupling, employing a metal ion as a template. Moreover, the synthetic yield of these cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes, tethered by an 18-crown-6 ether-like chain, is significantly enhanced in the presence of K+ ion as a template. The resultant cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes exhibit high stability, efficient singlet oxygen generation, and superior catalytic activity for the aerobic selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides under visible light irradiation in aqueous media at room temperature. The photocatalyst 2 demonstrates recyclability and can be reused at least 10 times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. These results unveil a new and complementary approach to the design and in situ synthesis of cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes via a mild interligand-coupling strategy.

BF3·Et2O-assisted synthesis of sulfinylated spiro[5.5]trienones from biaryl ynones

Sulfinyls are valuable structural moieties used for developing synthetically new pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Herein, we disclose a straightforward synthesis of sulfinylated spiro[5.5]trienones proceeding via an unprecedented BF3·Et2O-promoted spirocyclization of biaryl ynones. The availability of relatively inexpensive BF3·Et2O to carry out transformations on a bulk scale along with its further application towards the synthesis of dibenzocyclohepten-5-ones delivers a unique opportunity to deploy it in various synthetic directions.

Two 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Purine Carboxylic Acid Ligands for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides and CO2 Chemical Fixation

Two two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Yb(L)(H2O)2NO3]·2H2O}n (Yb-MOF) and [Er(L)(H2O)3Cl]n (Er-MOF) (H2L = 5-((6H-purin-6-yl)amino)isophthalic acid), were constructed by a solvothermal method and characterized. The catalytic performance study showed that the Yb-MOF could efficiently catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under 15 W light-emitting diode (LED) blue light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction process involved •O2-, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Moreover, Er-MOF exhibited good catalytic efficiency and excellent substrate tolerance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2, and the reaction conditions were mild. After 5 cycles, the catalytic activities of two MOFs did not significantly decrease, and the framework structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the Yb-MOF and Er-MOF were considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

Neighboring Effects of Sulfur Oxidation State on Dynamic Covalent Bonds and Assemblies

The impact of a varied sulfur oxidation state (sulfide, sulfoxide, and sulfone) on imine dynamic covalent chemistry is presented. The role of noncovalent interactions, including chalcogen bonds and CH hydrogen bonds, on aldehyde/imine structures and imine exchange reactions was elucidated through experimental and computational evidence. The change in the sulfur oxidation state and diamine linkage further allowed the regulation of imine macrocycles, providing a platform for controlling molecular assemblies.

Chiral Thianthrenes

The absolute configuration and stability of two thianthrene chiral sulfoxides has been determined by means of X-ray single-crystal structure determinations. The analyses and configurations allow verification that the diastereomeric sulfoxides are stable in solution and are not interconverting, which has been suggested in some studies of sulfoxides. The two thianthrene sulfoxides have slightly different Rf values, which allowed their separation using flash chromatography on silica. The spots run back-to-back, which posed a challenge for their separation. The pure, separated compounds in solution remain as separate, single spots on a Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plate.

A Porous Carbazolic Al-MOF for Efficient Aerobic Photo-Oxidation of Sulfides into Sulfoxides under Air

A robust, microporous, and photoactive aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Al-MOF, LCU-600) has been assembled by an in situ-formed [Al3O(CO2)6] trinuclear building unit and a tritopic carbazole ligand. LCU-600 shows a high water stability and permanent porosity for N2 and CO2 adsorption. Notably, the incorporation of photoresponsive carbazole moieties into LCU-600 makes it a highly efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for aerobic photo-oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides under an air atmosphere at room temperature. Mechanism investigations unveil that photogenerated holes (h+), superoxide radical anion (O2•-), and singlet oxygen (1O2) are critical active spices for the photo-oxidation reaction performed in an air atmosphere.

Phenylbenzothiazole-Based Platinum(II) and Diplatinum(II) and (III) Complexes with Pyrazolate Groups: Optical Properties and Photocatalysis

Based on 2-phenylbenzothiazole (pbt) and 2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)benzothiazole (Me2N-pbt), mononuclear [Pt(pbt)(R'2-pzH)2]PF6 (R'2-pzH = pzH 1a, 3,5-Me2pzH 1b, 3,5-iPr2pzH 1c) and diplatinum (PtII-PtII) [Pt(pbt)(μ-R'2pz)]2 (R'2-pz = pz 2a, 3,5-Me2pz 2b, 3,5-iPr2pz 2c) and [Pt(Me2N-pbt)(μ-pz)]2 (3a) complexes have been prepared. In the presence of sunlight, 2a and 3a evolve, in CHCl3 solution, to form the PtIII-PtIII complexes [Pt(R-pbt)(μ-pz)Cl]2 (R = H 4a, NMe2 5a). Experimental and computational studies reveal the negligible influence of the pyrazole or pyrazolate ligands on the optical properties of 1a-c and 2a,b, which exhibit a typical 3IL/3MLCT emission, whereas in 2c the emission has some 3MMLCT contribution. 3a displays unusual dual, fluorescence (1ILCT or 1MLCT/1LC), and phosphorescence (3ILCT) emissions depending on the excitation wavelength. The phosphorescence is lost in aerated solutions due to sensitization of 3O2 and formation of 1O2, whose determined quantum yield is also wavelength dependent. The phosphorescence can be reversibly photoinduced (365 nm, ∼ 15 min) in oxygenated THF and DMSO solutions. In 4a and 5a, the lowest electronic transitions (S1-S3) have mixed characters (LMMCT/LXCT/L'XCT 4a and LMMCT/LXCT/ILCT 5a) and they are weakly emissive in rigid media. The 1O2 generation property of complex 3a is successfully used for the photooxidation of p-bromothioanisol showing its potential application toward photocatalysis.

Nickel-Catalyzed Enantioselective Synthesis of Dienyl Sulfoxide

Sulfoxides are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and as ligands in asymmetric catalysis. However, the efficient asymmetric synthesis of this structural motif remains limited. In this study, we disclosed a Ni-catalyzed enantioconvergent reaction that utilizes both racemic allenyl carbonates and β-sulfinyl esters. Our method employs cheap and more sustainable Ni(II) as a precatalyst and successfully overcomes the challenging poisoning effect and instability of sulfenate generated in situ. This enables the synthesis of a series of dienyl sulfoxides with enantioselectivity of up to 98 % ee. The product exhibits tremendous potential in various applications, including diastereoselective Diels-Alder reactions, coordination with transition metals, and incorporation into medicinal compounds, among others. Using a combination of experimental and computational methods, we have uncovered an interesting associated outersphere mechanism that contrasts with conventional mechanisms commonly observed in asymmetric transition metal catalysis.

Synthesis of Large Macrocycles with Chiral Sulfur Centers via Enantiospecific SuFEx and SuPhenEx Click Reactions

Here we report the first asymmetric synthesis of large chiral macrocycles with chiral sulfur atoms. Building on stereospecific SuFEx and SuPhenEx click chemistries, this approach utilizes disulfonimidoyl fluorides and disulfonimidoyl p-nitrophenolates─which are efficient building blocks with two chiral sulfur centers, and diphenols to efficiently form novel S-O bonds. Characteristic results include the enantiospecific one-step synthesis of rings consisting of 21-58 members and characterization of both enantiomers (R,R and S,S) by e.g. X-ray crystallography.

Efficient oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides catalyzed by heterogeneous Zr-containing polyoxometalate grafted on graphene oxide

In this study, a tri-component composite named Zr/SiW12/GO was meticulously prepared through an ultrasonic-assisted method. This composite incorporates zirconium nanoparticles (Lewis acid), a negatively charged Keggin type polyoxometalate, and graphene oxide, and serves as a remarkable heterogeneous catalyst. The Keggin component plays multiple roles as reducing, encapsulating, and bridging agents, resulting in a cooperative effect among the three components that significantly enhances the catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Zr/SiW12/GO was thoroughly investigated in the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under mild conditions, employing H2O2 as the oxidant. Remarkably, this composite exhibited exceptional stability and could be effortlessly recovered and reused up to four times without any noticeable loss in its catalytic activity.

Hypervalent Iodine Mediated Synthesis of Sulfinamidines from Sulfenamides

In this study, we present a novel, efficient method for the oxidative amination of sulfenamides using diacetoxyiodobenzene (PhI(OAc)2) and amines under basic conditions. This innovative technique streamlines the synthesis of sulfinamidines under mild, metal-free conditions, achieving outstanding yields of up to 99%. Furthermore, we propose possible pathways that elucidate the observed molecular sequence of events in this reaction. This cutting-edge approach not only advances the synthesis of valuable sulfinamidine compounds but also expands the synthetic toolbox available to chemists, paving the way for future discoveries in organic synthesis and potential applications in medicinal chemistry.

The First Enantiomeric Stereogenic Sulfur-Chiral Organic Ferroelectric Crystals

Chiral ferroelectric crystals with intriguing features have attracted great interest and many with point or axial chirality based on the stereocarbon have been successively developed in recent years. However, ferroelectric crystals with stereogenic heteroatomic chirality have never been documented so far. Here, we discover and report a pair of enantiomeric stereogenic sulfur-chiral single-component organic ferroelectric crystals, Rs -tert-butanesulfinamide (Rs -tBuSA) and Ss -tert-butanesulfinamide (Ss -tBuSA) through the deep understanding of the chemical design of molecular ferroelectric crystals. Both enantiomers adopt chiral-polar point group 2 (C2 ) and exhibit mirror-image relationships. They undergo high-temperature 432F2-type plastic ferroelectric phase transition around 348 K. The ferroelectricity has been well confirmed by ferroelectric hysteresis loops and domains. Polarized light microscopy records the evolution of the ferroelastic domains, according with the fact that the 432F2-type phase transition is both ferroelectric and ferroelastic. The very soft characteristics with low elastic modulus and hardness reveals their excellent mechanical flexibility. This finding indicates the first stereosulfur chiral molecular ferroelectric crystals, opening up new fertile ground for exploring molecular ferroelectric crystals with great application prospects.

A New Gold(III) Complex, TGS 703, Shows Potent Anti-Inflammatory Activity in Colitis via the Enzymatic and Non-Enzymatic Antioxidant System-An In Vitro, In Silico, and In Vivo Study

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and their main representatives, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are worldwide health-care problems with constantly increasing frequency and still not fully understood pathogenesis. IBD treatment involves drugs such as corticosteroids, derivatives of 5-aminosalicylic acid, thiopurines, and others, with the goal to achieve and maintain remission of the disease. Nowadays, as our knowledge about IBD is continually growing, more specific and effective therapies at the molecular level are wanted. In our study, we tested novel gold complexes and their potential effect on inflammation and IBD in vitro, in silico, and in vivo. A series of new gold(III) complexes (TGS 404, 512, 701, 702, and 703) were designed and screened in the in vitro inflammation studies. In silico modeling was used to study the gold complexes' structure vs. their activity and stability. Dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model of colitis was employed to characterize the anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cell experiments proved the anti-inflammatory potential of all tested complexes. Selected on the bases of in vitro and in silico analyses, TGS 703 significantly alleviated inflammation in the DSS-induced mouse model of colitis, which was confirmed by a statistically significant decrease in the macro- and microscopic score of inflammation. The mechanism of action of TGS 703 was linked to the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems. TGS 703 and other gold(III) complexes present anti-inflammatory potential and may be applied therapeutically in the treatment of IBD.

Discovery and Rational Mutagenesis of Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Biocatalysts To Expand the Substrate Scope of the Kinetic Resolution of Chiral Sulfoxides

Methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) enzymes have recently found applications as nonoxidative biocatalysts in the enantioselective kinetic resolution of racemic sulfoxides. This work describes the identification of selective and robust MsrA biocatalysts able to catalyze the enantioselective reduction of a variety of aromatic and aliphatic chiral sulfoxides at 8-64 mM concentration with high yields and excellent ees (up to 99%). Moreover, with the aim to expand the substrate scope of MsrA biocatalysts, a library of mutant enzymes has been designed via rational mutagenesis utilizing in silico docking, molecular dynamics, and structural nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies. The mutant enzyme MsrA33 was found to catalyze the kinetic resolution of bulky sulfoxide substrates bearing non-methyl substituents on the sulfur atom with ees up to 99%, overcoming a significant limitation of the currently available MsrA biocatalysts.

Hypervalent Iodine-Mediated Synthesis of Sulfinimidate Esters from Sulfenamides

In this study, we present a novel and efficient approach for the oxidative esterification of sulfenamides using phenyliodonium diacetate, enabling the synthesis of sulfinimidate esters and sulfilimines under mild and metal-free conditions, with yields reaching up to 99%. The protocol is readily scalable and compatible with a diverse range of substrates and functional groups, and we demonstrate its potential for late-stage functionalization of pharmacologically relevant molecules. Furthermore, we propose a plausible reaction mechanism to account for the observed sequence of events.

Hybrid Materials Based on Imidazo[4,5-b]porphyrins for Catalytic Oxidation of Sulfides

Heterogenized metalloporphyrin catalysts for oxidation reactions are extensively explored to improve chemical production. In this work, manganese meso-tetraarylporphyrins were immobilized on hydrated mesoporous titanium dioxide (SBET = 705 m2 g−1) through carboxylate or phosphonate anchoring groups separated from the macrocycle by the 2-arylimidazole linker fused across one of the pyrrolic rings of the macrocycle. The element composition of two mesoporous hybrid materials thus obtained were investigated and the integrity of the immobilized complexes was shown by different physicochemical methods. Finally, the catalytic efficiency of the more stable material Mn(TMPIP)/TiO2 with the phosphonate anchor was evaluated in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides by molecular oxygen in the presence of isobutyraldehyde (IBA). The heterogenized complex has shown excellent catalytic activity exhibiting a turnover (TON) of ~1100 in a single catalytic run of the sulfoxidation of thioanisole. The catalyst was successfully reused in seven consecutive catalytic cycles.

Visible-Light-Induced Phenoxyl Radical-based Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Photooxidation of Sulfides

Phenoxyl radicals originating from phenols through oxidation or photoinduction are relatively stable and exhibit mild oxidative activity, which endows them with the potential for photocatalysis. Herein, a stable and recyclable metal-organic framework Zr-MOF-OH constructed of a binaphthol derivative ligand has been synthesized and functions as an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst. Zr-MOF-OH shows fairly good catalytic activity and substrate compatibility toward the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under visible light irradiation. Such irradiation of Zr-MOF-OH converts the phenolic hydroxyl groups of the binaphthol derivative ligand to phenoxyl radicals through excited state intramolecular proton transfer, and the excited state photocatalyst triggers the single-electron oxidation of the sulfide. No reactive oxygen species are produced in the photocatalytic process, and triplet O₂ directly participates in the reaction, endowing Zr-MOF-OH with wide substrate compatibility and high selectivity, which also proposes a promising pathway for the direct activation of substrates via phenoxyl radicals.

Organocatalytic asymmetric deoxygenation of sulfones to access chiral sulfinyl compounds

Over the past decades, many efficient methodologies have been developed that allow for the enantioselective synthesis of chiral sulfinyl compounds. However, the enantioselective deoxygenation of hexavalent sulfones for the formation of chiral sulfinyl compounds still remains one of the major challenges in the fields of asymmetric synthesis and organosulfur chemistry. Here we have demonstrated that a synergistic combination of organocatalysis and the incorporation of a cyano group into the sulfone generates a chiral sulfinic species as an active intermediate. A wide range of chiral sulfinates with high enantioselectivities could then be acquired using alcohols as nucleophiles, and the subsequent transformations allowed the collective preparation of a variety of chiral sulfinyl compounds. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the catalytic cycle involves a quinuclidine-assisted stepwise 1,2-cyano group transfer, base-assisted intermolecular substitution with alcohol and regeneration of the active catalyst. The enantioselectivity was determined by the cyano migration step.

Oxidative Dehydrogenative Coupling of Thiols with Alkanes for the Synthesis of Sulfoxides

An oxidative dehydrogenative coupling of thiols with alkanes via direct C(sp³)-H bond functionalization to form a new C-S bond and S═O double bond was developed. The present reaction features the use of readily available reagents and high step- and atom-efficiency, thus providing an efficient access to sulfoxides. A possible mechanism is proposed.

Rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H alkynylation of sulfoxides in diverse patterns: desymmetrization, kinetic resolution, and parallel kinetic resolution

Rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H alkynylation of achiral and racemic sulfoxides is disclosed with alkynyl bromide as the alkynylating reagent. A wide range of chiral sulfoxides have been constructed in good yield and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee, s-factor up to > 500) via desymmetrization, kinetic resolution, and parallel kinetic resolution under mild reaction conditions. The high enantioselectivity was rendered by the chiral cyclopentadienyl rhodium(iii) catalyst paired with a chiral carboxamide additive. The interactions between the chiral catalyst, the sulfoxide, and the chiral carboxylic amide during the C-H bond cleavage offer the asymmetric induction, which is validated by DFT calculations. The chiral carboxamide functions as a base to promote C-H activation and offers an additional chiral environment during the C-H cleavage.

Synthetic Access to α-Oxoketene Aminals by the Nucleophilic Addition of Enol Silane-Derived Palladium(II) Enolates to Carbodiimides

Synthetically important α-oxoketene aminal intermediates can now be accessed from readily available and inexpensive carbodiimides as starting materials via the nucleophilic addition of palladium enolates derived from enol silane precursors. This operationally simple method features mild reaction conditions, including open air atmosphere, ligand-free metal catalysis, broad substrate scope, and multi-gram scalability. Select synthetic applications that take advantage of the enamine character of α-oxoketene aminals and involve C-nucleophilic additions to electrophilic systems, including an α,β-unsaturated ester, an azo dicarboxylate, an aralkyl halide, and an aldehyde, are demonstrated.

Chalcogen bond-guided conformational isomerization enables catalytic dynamic kinetic resolution of sulfoxides

Conformational isomerization can be guided by weak interactions such as chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions. Here we report a catalytic strategy for asymmetric access to chiral sulfoxides by employing conformational isomerization and chalcogen bonding interactions. The reaction involves a sulfoxide bearing two aldehyde moieties as the substrate that, according to structural analysis and DFT calculations, exists as a racemic mixture due to the presence of an intramolecular chalcogen bond. This chalcogen bond formed between aldehyde (oxygen atom) and sulfoxide (sulfur atom), induces a conformational locking effect, thus making the symmetric sulfoxide as a racemate. In the presence of N–heterocyclic carbene (NHC) as catalyst, the aldehyde moiety activated by the chalcogen bond selectively reacts with an alcohol to afford the corresponding chiral sulfoxide products with excellent optical purities. This reaction involves a dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) process enabled by conformational locking and facile isomerization by chalcogen bonding interactions.

Conformational isomerization of organic molecules can be guided by noncovalent interactions. Here, the authors report the synthesis of chiral sulfoxides catalyzed by N-heterocyclic carbenes; intramolecular chalcogen bonding interactions are key for conformational locking.

Direct Utilization of Near-Infrared Light for Photooxidation with a Metal-Free Photocatalyst

Near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered photoredox catalysis is highly desirable because NIR light occupies almost 50% of solar energy and possesses excellent penetrating power in various media. Herein we utilize a metal-free boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivative as the photocatalyst to achieve NIR light (720 nm LED)–driven oxidation of benzylamine derivatives, sulfides, and aryl boronic acids. Compared to blue light–driven photooxidation using Ru(bpy)₃Cl₂ as a photocatalyst, NIR light–driven photooxidation exhibited solvent independence and superior performance in large-volume (20 mL) reaction, presumably thanks to the neutral structure of a BODIPY photocatalyst and the deeper penetration depth of NIR light. We further demonstrate the application of this metal-free NIR photooxidation to prodrug activation and combination with Cu-catalysis for cross coupling reaction, exhibiting the potential of metal-free NIR photooxidation as a toolbox for organic synthesis and drug development.

Highly Effective Photocatalytic Radical Reactions Triggered by a Photoactive Metal-Organic Framework

On account of their inherent reactive properties, radical reactions play an important role in organic syntheses. The booming photochemistry provides a feasible approach to trigger the generation of radical intermediates in organic reaction processes. Thus, developing effective photocatalysts becomes the key step in radical reactions. In this work, the triphenylamine moiety with photoactivity is successfully embedded in a highly porous and stable metal-organic framework (MOF), and the obtained MOF, namely, Zr-TCA, naturally displays a photoactive property derived from the triphenylamine-based ligand. In photocatalytic studies, the triphenylamine-based Zr-TCA not only exhibits a high catalytic activity on the aerobic oxidation of sulfides via the generation of the superoxide radical anion (O2•-) under light irradiation but also shows good efficiency in the trifluoromethylation of arenes and heteroarenes by the formation of the trifluoromethyl radical (CF3•) as an intermediate. Moreover, the high performance of Zr-TCA can be well maintained over a wide range of substrates in these radical reactions, and the recycled Zr-TCA still retains its excellent photocatalytic activity. The high recyclability and catalytic efficiency to various substrates make the constructed triphenylamine-based Zr-TCA a promising photocatalyst in diverse radical reactions.

Electrochemical Sulfoxidation of Thiols and Alkyl Halides

Sulfoxides are actively engaged as versatile synthetic building blocks, chiral ligands, bioactive molecules, and function materials. However, their oxidative syntheses from thioethers are inevitably impeded by overoxidation, excess oxidants, and the tedious preparation of thioethers. To address these shortcomings, we report herein a highly selective electrochemical sulfoxidation reaction featuring the use of simple starting materials, i.e., thiols and alkyl halides, in a single operation.

Visible light-promoted photocatalyst-free activation of persulfates: a promising strategy for C-H functionalization reactions

The employment of renewable energy resources is highly desirable according to the twelve principles of green chemistry. In this context, visible light promoted organic transformations have gained much attention from synthetic chemists due to the employment of renewable energy. However, the inability of the majority of organic molecules to absorb visible light encouraged the use of photocatalysts in visible light-mediated organic transformations. As a result, different types of photocatalysts like transition-metal containing photoredox catalysts, organophotoredox catalysts, heterogeneous photocatalysts, etc. have emerged over the years. On the other hand, persulphates (K₂S₂O₈, Na₂S₂O₈, and (NH₄)₂S₂O₈) have been widely used as oxidants in various oxidative organic transformations under thermal and photochemical conditions. The initial formation of an active persulfate radical anion from a persulfate anion is the crucial step for these oxidative transformations and the conversions under visible light are generally carried out employing different photocatalysts. Although numerous methodologies have been successfully developed employing these photocatalysts, the development of new processes under photocatalyst-free conditions are more preferable from the viewpoint of sustainable development. Persulphates could be very useful for various organic transformations through C-H functionalizations under photocatalyst-free visible light irradiation. In this review, we will exemplify the efficiency of persulphates in various oxidative organic transformations under visible light irradiation without the employment of any photocatalysts. The utilities and mechanistic pathways of the methodologies will also be highlighted.

Orchestrating a β-Hydride Elimination Pathway in Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Arylation/Alkenylation of Cyclopropanols Using Organoboron Reagents

The scope of chemoselective β-hydride elimination in the context of arylation/alkenylation of homoenolates from cyclopropanol precursors using organoboronic reagents as transmetalation coupling partners was examined. The reaction optimization paradigm revealed a simple ligand-free Pd(II) catalytic system to be most efficient under open air conditions. The preparative scope, which was investigated with 48 examples, supported the applicability of this reaction to a wide range of substrates tolerating a variety of functional groups while delivering β-substituted enone and dienone derivatives in 62-95% yields.

Highly Crystalline Ag-based Coordination Polymers for Efficient Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides

Coordination polymers (CPs) display great potential for the development of highly active photocatalysts. Herein, we report the fabrication of a highly crystalline CP, [Ag₂ BTT]_n (BTT=benzene-1,2,4,5-tetrathiol). The crystal structure of [Ag₂ BTT]_n was resolved and its performance for photocatalytic oxidation of thioanisole was explored. [Ag₂ BTT]_n is highly active and selective for the photo-oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under mild conditions, that is, in air, at room temperature and in the absence of a sacrificial reagent, co-catalyst or redox mediator.

Synthesis of Polysubstituted Ferrocenesulfoxides

The purpose of the study is to design synthetic methodologies, especially directed deprotometalation using polar organometallic reagents, to access polysubstituted ferrocenesulfoxides. From enantiopure 2-substituted (SiMe₃, PPh₂) S-tert-butylferrocenesulfoxides, a third substituent was first introduced at the 5 position (SiMe₃, I, D, C(OH)Ph₂, Me, PPh₂, CH₂NMe₂, F) and removal of the trimethylsilyl group then afforded 2-substituted ferrocenesulfoxides unreachable otherwise. Attempts to apply the “halogen dance” reaction to the ferrocenesulfoxide series led to unexpected results although rationalized in light of calculated pK_a values. Further functionalizations were also possible. Thus, new enantiopure, planar chiral di- and trisubstituted ferrocenes have been obtained, in addition to several original 2-substituted, 2,3- and 2,5-disubstituted, 2,3,5-trisubstituted and even 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted ferrocenesulfoxides, also enantiopure.

Enantiopure ferrocene-1,2-disulfoxides: synthesis and reactivity

The rational use of directed deprotometallation, sulfur oxidation and sulfoxide/lithium exchange allowed the synthesis of enantiopure ferrocene-1,2-disulfoxide derivatives. Not only do they represent the first members of this original family, but some of them have shown promise as ligands in rhodium-catalysed conjugate addition.

Asymmetric transformations from sulfoxonium ylides

Sulfoxonium ylides are important surrogates for diazo compounds, and their use in industry as safer alternatives has been evaluated during recent years. Beyond the known classical transformations, these ylides have also been used in a surprising plethora of novel and intrinsic chemical reactions, especially in recent years. Bench stability and handling are also an advantage of this class of organosulfur molecules. Despite this, efficient asymmetric transformations, specifically catalytic enantioselective versions, have only recently been reported, and there are specific reasons for this. This perspective article covers this topic from the first studies up to the latest advances, giving personal perspectives and showing the main challenges in this area in the coming years.

Electrochemical dual-oxidation strategy enables access to α-chlorosulfoxides from sulfides

Electrochemistry contributes a strong tool for the manufacture of molecules, addressing intractable challenges in synthetic chemistry by enabling innovative reaction pathways. Herein, a bifunctional reagent, aqueous hydrochloric acid, is used to establish an electrochemical selective dual-oxidation approach that gives access to α-chlorosulfoxides from sulfides. This strategy presents broad substrate scope, high diastereoselectivity, and regioselectivity. The late-stage modification of amino acids and pharmaceutical derivatives further highlights the utility. Furthermore, detailed mechanistic studies reveal that the key success for this selective chemical transformation is the dual-oxidation process at the anode. This electrochemical dual-oxidation strategy may have wide universality; we anticipate diverse applications of this protocol across the many fields of chemistry.

An enantioselective [1,2] Stevens rearrangement was realized by using chiral guanidine and copper(i) complexes. Bis-sulfuration of α-diazocarbonyl compounds was developed through using thiosulfonates as the sulfenylating agent. It was undoubtedly an atom-economic process providing an efficient route to access novel chiral dithioketal derivatives, affording the corresponding products in good yields (up to 90% yield) and enantioselectivities (up to 96 : 4 er). A novel catalytic cycle was proposed to rationalize the reaction process and enantiocontrol.
