Abstract
The aim of this work was to develop a fluorescence method based on the polydopamine-polyethyleneimine (PDA-PEI) copolymerization, which was subsequently applied for the determination of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) in food contact papers (FCMs). PEI could provide an alkaline environment and then react with dopamine (DA) to produce copolymers by Michael addition and Schiff-base reactions. This copolymer has a strong fluorescence emission at 527 nm. We found that amino groups of DA and PEI could also react with 3-MCPD in an alkaline medium, which improved the morphology and fluorescence intensity of PDA-PEI copolymers. The fluorescence intensity of the polymers was linear but inversely proportional to the concentration of 3-MCPD in the range of 10.0-500.0 μg kg-1 and the detection limit was 2 μg kg-1. The standard addition method was used in FCMs to demonstrate the practical applicability and the spiked recoveries ranged from 99.8 to 110.3 %. Finally, the levels of 3-MCPD in different FCMs (n = 70) were determined by the proposed method. The detection frequencies ranged from 25 % to 100 % and both the highest detection frequency and levels were observed in kitchen papers. More than half of the samples did not comply with the limits recommended by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, suggesting that 3-MCPD released from FCMs is a major route of human exposure.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is a key neurotransmitter whose concentration affects various neurological disorders. Unlike previous methods that synthesize non-fluorescent polydopamine (NFL-PDA) under alkaline conditions, this study introduces a novel "turn-off" sensing method for DA using NFL-PDA synthesized through a unique reaction pathway. In our approach, CuO2 nanodots, created via a simple reduction method, catalyze the formation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in acidic conditions, triggering the oxidative polymerization of DA into NFL-PDA. The reaction between DA and CuO2 nanodots in acidic solution was examined to understand the process. UiO-66-NH2 was then used to test NFL-PDA's fluorescence quenching ability and to further investigate the DA determination mechanism. Results showed that fluorescence quenching was due to enhanced non-radiative energy transfer and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NFL-PDA and UiO-66-NH2. This led to the development of a simple "turn-off" fluorometric DA determination method with a linear range of 0.1-200 μmol/L and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0575 μmol/L. Although this method does not outperform existing NFL-PDA synthesis methods under alkaline conditions, it provides a new synthesis approach and application for sensing DA, contributing to the basic theory of chemical sensing. Additionally, DA determination in human serum samples was successfully achieved, with results consistent with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract
Nowadays, researchers are looking for green synthesis methods of polymers that solve the disadvantages of polymerization with different initiators and traditional methods. In this work, the self-polymerization process of benzidine by anodic exfloated graphene oxide Nanosheet electrode (AEGO Nsh) is reported for the first time in the world. The self-polymerization of benzidine onto AEGO Nsh electrode was done by an easy and simple method by anodizing the graphite sheet followed by immersing the AEGO Nsh electrode inside the benzidine monomer dissolved in organic and inorganic acid media. The surface morphology of the self-polymerized benzidine (SPB) onto the AEGO Nsh (SPB/AEGO Nsh) electrode was investigated by phone camera and scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) imaging. The chemical characterization of the SPB/AEGO Nsh electrode was verified through XPS and ATR-IR analysis. Additionally, the self-polymerization of benzidine onto AEGO Nsh electrodes was confirmed by electrochemical tests using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The results from these investigations unequivocally confirm the self-polymerization of benzidine onto the AEGO Nsh electrode.

Abstract
After skin tissue trauma, wound infections caused by bacteria posed a great threat to skin repair. However, resistance to antibiotics, the current treatment of choice for bacterial infections, greatly affected the efficiency of anti-infection and wound healing. Therefore, there has been a critical need for the development of novel antimicrobial materials and advanced therapeutic methods to aid in skin repair. In this paper, rGO-PDA@ZIF-8 nanofillers were prepared by coating graphene oxide (GO) with dopamine (DA), followed by in situ growth of zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CS) as matrix materials, along with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore-forming agent, and rGO-PDA@ZIF-8 as an antimicrobial nano-filler, we successfully prepared rGO-PDA@ZIF-8/PVA/CS composite hydrogels with a directional macroporous structure using bidirectional freezing method and phase separation technique. This hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties, good solubility and water retention capabilities. In addition, the hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. Most notably, it not only exhibited excellent bactericidal effect against E. coli and S. aureus (99.1 % and 99.0 %, respectively) under the synergistic effect of intrinsic antibacterial activity and photothermal antibacterial, but also exhibited the ability to promote wound healing, making it a promising candidate for wound healing applications.

Abstract
Cationic polymers have recently attracted considerable interest as research breakthroughs for various industrial and biomedical applications. They are particularly interesting due to their highly positive charges, acceptable physicochemical properties, and ability to undergo further modifications, making them attractive candidates for biomedical applications. Polyethyleneimines (PEIs), as the most extensively utilized polymers, are one of the valuable and prominent classes of polycations. Owing to their flexible polymeric chains, broad molecular weight (MW) distribution, and repetitive structural units, their customization for functional composites is more feasible. The specific beneficial attributes of PEIs could be introduced by purposeful functionalization or modification, long service life, biocompatibility, and distinct geometry. Therefore, PEIs have significant potential in biotechnology, medicine, and bioscience. In this review, we present the advances in PEI-based nanomaterials, their transfection efficiency, and their toxicity over the past few years. Furthermore, the potential and suitability of PEIs for various applications are highlighted and discussed in detail. This review aims to inspire readers to investigate innovative approaches for the design and development of next-generation PEI-based nanomaterials possessing cutting-edge functionalities and appealing characteristics.

Abstract
A sensitive method for the detection of β-glucuronidase was established using functionalized carbon dots (β-CD-SiCDs) as fluorescent probes. The β-CD-SiCDs were found to be obtained through in situ autopolymerization by mixing the solutions of methyldopa, mono-6-ethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin and N-(β-aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane at room temperature. The method has the characteristics of low energy consumption, simple and rapid. β-CD-SiCDs exhibited green fluorescence at 515 nm emission with a quantum yield of 7.9 %. 4-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucuronide was introduced as a substrate for β-glucuronidase to generate p-nitrophenol. Subsequently, p-nitrophenol self-assembled with β-CD-SiCDs through host-guest recognition to form a stable inclusion complex, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of β-CD-SiCDs. The linear range of β-CD-SiCDs for detecting β-glucuronidase activity was 0.5-60 U L-1 with a detection limit of 0.14 U L-1. For on-site detection, gel reagents were prepared by a simple method and the images were visualized and quantified by taking advantage of smartphones, avoiding the use of large instrumentation. The constructed fluorescence sensing platform has the benefits of easy operation and time saving, and has been successfully used for the detection of β-glucuronidase activity in serum and cell imaging.

Abstract
Polydopamine (PDA), the synthetic counterpart of melanin, is a widely investigated bio-inspired material for its chemical and photophysical properties, and in the last few years, bio-application of PDA and PDA-based materials have had a dramatic increase. In this review, we described PDA application in optical biosensing, exploring its multiple roles as a nanomaterial. In optical sensing, PDA can not only be used for its intrinsic fluorescent and photoacoustic properties as a probe: in some cases, a sample optical signal can be derived by melanin generation in situ or it can be enhanced in another material thanks to PDA modification. The various possibilities of PDA use coupled with its biocompatibility will indeed widen even more its application in optical bioimaging.

Abstract
Flexible strain sensors have attracted substantial attention given their application in human-computer interaction and personal health monitoring. Due to the inherent disadvantages of conventional hydrogels, the manufacture of hydrogel strain sensors with high tensile strength, excellent adhesion, self-healing and antimicrobial properties in vitro, and conductive stability is still a challenge. Herein, a conductive hydrogel consisting of polydopamine-coated cellulose nanofibers (CNF@PDA), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was developed. The CNTs in PVA/CNF@PDA/CNT hydrogels were uniformly dispersed in the presence of CNF@PDA by hydrogen bonding, resulting in a nearly threefold increase in conductivity (0.4 S/m) over hydrogels without PDA. The hydrogel exhibited satisfactory tensile properties (tensile stress up to 0.79 MPa), good fatigue resistance, self-recovery and excellent antimicrobial activity in vitro. It showed excellent adhesion, especially the adhesion strength of pigskin was increased to 27 kPa. In addition, the hydrogel was used as a strain sensor, exhibiting excellent strain sensitivity (strain coefficient = 2.29), fast response (150 ms), and great durability (over 1000 cycles). The fabricated strain sensors can detect both large and subtle human movements (e.g., wrist bending and vocalization) with stable and repeatable electrical signals, indicating potential applications in personal health monitoring.

Abstract
A unique feature of nanoparticles for bio-application is the ease of achieving multi-functionality through covalent and non-covalent functionalization. In this way, multiple therapeutic actions, including chemical, photothermal and photodynamic activity, can be combined with different bio-imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance, photoacoustic, and fluorescence imaging, in a theragnostic approach. In this context, melanin-related nanomaterials possess unique features since they are intrinsically biocompatible and, due to their optical and electronic properties, are themselves very efficient photothermal agents, efficient antioxidants, and photoacoustic contrast agents. Moreover, these materials present a unique versatility of functionalization, which makes them ideal for the design of multifunctional platforms for nanomedicine integrating new functions such as drug delivery and controlled release, gene therapy, or contrast ability in magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging. In this review, the most relevant and recent examples of melanin-based multi-functionalized nanosystems are discussed, highlighting the different methods of functionalization and, in particular, distinguishing pre-functionalization and post-functionalization. In the meantime, the properties of melanin coatings employable for the functionalization of a variety of material substrates are also briefly introduced, especially in order to explain the origin of the versatility of melanin functionalization. In the final part, the most relevant critical issues related to melanin functionalization that may arise during the design of multifunctional melanin-like nanoplatforms for nanomedicine and bio-application are listed and discussed.

Abstract
Polydopamine fluorescent organic nanomaterials present unique physicochemical and biological properties, which have great potential application in bio-imaging and chemical sensors. Here, folic acid (FA) adjustive polydopamine (PDA) fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FA-PDA FONs) were prepared by a facile one-pot self-polymerization strategy using dopamine (DA) and FA as precursors under mild conditions. The as-prepared FA-PDA FONs had an average size of 1.9 ± 0.3 nm in diameter with great aqueous dispersibility, and the FA-PDA FONs solution exhibit intense blue fluorescence under 365 nm UV lamp, and the quantum yield is ~8.27%. The FA-PDA FONs could be stable in a relatively wide pH range and high ionic strength salt solution, and the fluorescence intensities are constant. More importantly, here we developed a method for rapidly selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) within 10 s using FA-PDA FONs based probe, the fluorescence intensities of FA-PDA FONs presented a great linear relationship to Hg2+ concentration, the linear range and limit of detection (LOD) were 0-18 µM and 0.18 µM, respectively. Furthermore, the feasibility of the developed Hg2+ sensor was verified by determination of Hg2+ in mineral water and tap water samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The presented study focuses on the modification of polypropylene (PP) film with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) under heterogeneous conditions via polydopamine/polyethylene imine (PDA/PEI) chemistry using a facile dip-coating procedure to attain hydrophilic mineral-rich surfaces. Thus, the resulting PP-based films were further immersed in ion-rich simulated body fluid (SBF) to deposit Ca-based minerals onto the film's surfaces efficiently. In addition, the chemical reaction mechanism on PP film was proposed, and mineralisation potential inspected by determination of functional groups of deposits, zeta potential, hydrophilicity and surface morphology/topography using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, streaming potential, water contact angle (WCA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results show the improved wettability of samples on account of PDA inclusion (WCA was reduced from 103° for pure PP film to 28° for PDA-modified film), as well as the presence of functional groups, due to the PDA/PEI/TEOS surface functionalisation, increased the ability of minerals to nucleate on the PP film's surface when it was exposed to an SBF medium. Moreover, the higher surface roughness due to the silica coatings influenced the enhanced anchoring and attachment of calcium phosphate (CaP), revealing the potential of such a facile approach to modify the chemically inert PP films, being of particular interest in different fields, including regenerative medicine.

Abstract
As the main inorganic component of human bones and teeth, hydroxyapatite (HA), with excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility, shows great potential in the bone tissue engineering field. Marine mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) possesses unique functional groups and thus can absorb the calcium ions from extracellular fluid, thereby triggering the precipitation of HA. This study is based on a two-step strategy. Using the chemical activity of PDA, polyvinyl alcohol/polylactic acid (PVA/PLA) braids were coated with a PDA layer that served as a template for the electrochemical deposition of a HA layer. The test results indicate that the resulting HA crystals were assembled on the polymer fibers in an urchin-like mannerwith a stratified structure. Subsequently, the HA/PDA-PVA/PLA braided bone scaffolds were immersed in simulated body fluid for ten days, after which the bone scaffolds were found to be completely coated with HA, indicating a good biomineralization capability. Cell activity of HA/PDA-PVA/PLA scaffolded by dopamine-assisted electrodeposition was 178.8% than that of PVA/PLA braids. This HA coating layer inspired by biochemical strategies may be useful in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Dopamine and polyethyleneimine (PEI) copolymerized nanodots (PDA-PEI nanodots) with both fluorescence emission and quenching features were synthesized by a simple one-step reaction at room temperature. By adjusting the dopamine and PEI ratio as well as the chain length of PEI, the fluorescence emission and quenching properties of PDA-PEI nanodots can be controlled well. Under optimal conditions, the nanodots showed strong green fluorescence emission with an absolute quantum yield of 1-2% and a quenching efficiency of more than 99% to several fluorophores with emission wavelengths ranging from blue to red light regions. The nanodots with a large number of functional groups also showed strong affinity to nucleic acid strands, excellent solubility in aqueous solution, long-term stability, and uniform size distribution. Integrating these attractive features with the specific enzymatic digestion reaction of the DSN enzyme, a highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe for miRNA analysis was developed. Aminomethylcoumarin acetate (AMCA), which possesses the same excitation wavelength but a well-resolved blue fluorescence emission with PDA-PEI nanodots, was selected as the signal-reporting unit for capture probe labeling, while the inherent green fluorescence of PDA-PEI nanodots served as the reference. According to the ratiometric fluorescence signal, the ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobes showed high sensitivity and good accuracy for the miRNA assay. Because of the high and universal quenching efficiency, stable fluorescence emission, easily assembled interface, and uniform morphology, the nanodots may have great application prospects to serve as a universal nanoplatform for the fabrication of ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobes.

Abstract
Development of a simple and efficient dual-mode analytical technique with the built-in cross reference correction feature is benefit to achieve the highly accurate detection of the target pollutants and avoid the false-positive outputs in environmental media. Here, we synthesized a Fe-doped polydopamine (Fe@PDA)-based nanozyme with prominent peroxide-mimetic enzyme activity and high fluorescence emission ability. On this basis, we designed a dual-recognition strategy-driven fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode detection platform, consisting of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) recognition aptamer-modified Fe@PDA (apt/Fe@PDA) and vancomycin-functionalized Fe3O4 (van/Fe3O4), for L. monocytogenes. Owing to van/Fe3O4-powered magnetic separation, there was a L. monocytogenes concentration-dependent fluorescence enhancement of apt/Fe@PDA for performing fluorescence assay in the precipitate. In this case, the prominent peroxide-mimetic enzyme activity of the residual apt/Fe@PDA in the precipitation could catalyze H2O2 to further oxidate colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, which displayed a L. monocytogenes concentration-dependent absorbance enhancement for carrying out colorimetric assay as well. As a result, a fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode analytical platform was proposed to successfully detect the residual L. monocytogenes in real environmental media with acceptable results. This work showed the great prospects by integrating dual-recognition strategy into fluorescence nanozyme to develop efficient and reliable dual-mode analytical platforms for safeguarding environmental health.

Abstract
The exploitation of selective and sensitive dopamine (DA) sensors is essential to more deeply understand its biological function and diagnosis of related diseases. In this study, gold nanocluster-encapsulated hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (hPEI-Au NCs) has been explored as the specific and ratiometric DA nanoprobe through hPEI-assisted DA self-polymerization reactions. The Au NCs encapsulation not only provides a fluorescent internal reference but also enhances the DA self-polymerization by weakening the proton sponge effect of the hPEI layer. Rapid and sensitive DA detection is realized through the proposed hPEI-Au NC nanoprobe with a limit of detection of 10 nM. The favorable selectivity over other possible interferents including amino acids, sugars, and salts is due to the specific self-polymerization reaction. The DA analysis in urine samples with small relative standard deviations has been accomplished with an hPEI-Au NC nanoprobe.

Abstract
Fluorescence nanoparticles have gained much attention due to their unique properties in the sensing and imaging fields. Among the very successful candidates are fluorescent polydopamine (FPDA) nanoparticles, attributed to their simplicity in tracing and excellent biocompatibility. This article aims to highlight the recent achievements in FPDA materials, especially on the part of luminescence mechanisms. We focus on the intrinsic fluorescence of PDA and will not discuss fluorescent reaction with a fluorometric reagent or coupling reaction with a fluorophore, which may cause more in vivo interferences. We believe that intrinsic FPDA presents great potential in bioapplications.

Abstract
For the first time, boronic acid-modified polymer dots (B-PDs) were fabricated by a "synthesis-modification integration" route using polyethylenimine (PEI) and phenylboronic acid as precursors. Under optimized preparation conditions, the B-PDs exhibited an average size of 2.2 nm, good water solubility, and high fluorescence quantum yield of 8.69%. The B-PDs showed reversible fluorescence response in acid solutions (blue emissions) and alkaline solutions (green emissions). The fluorescence emissions of B-PDs demonstrated an obvious red shift with varying the pH value from 1 - 13. Moreover, glucose could assemble on the surface of B-PDs due to the reversible reaction between boronic acid and cis-diols, which resulted in a blue shift of emission wavelength and an obvious increase of FL intensity at λex = 380 nm based on the aggregation-induced enhancement effect. The glucose sensing method was thus developed in the range 0.0001 - 1.0 mol L-1. Applications to real human blood and glucose injection samples demonstrated satisfactory results. The B-PDs based on the analytical method display good selectivity, wide detection range, and simplicity in preparation and detection, implying promising applications as a practical platform for biosensing.

Abstract
A highly effective fluorescent molecularly imprinted sensor (F-PDA-MIS) based on fluorescent polydopamine (F-PDA) was successfully synthesized for selective and ultrafast detection of p-nitrophenol (P-NP) in drinking water. F-PDA with abundant surface functional groups has been artfully modified to firstly serve as both fluorescent monomer and functional monomer in the synthesis of a uniform luminous F-PDA-MIS, which can greatly improve the detection efficiency. As expected, F-PDA-MIS had an obvious emission wavelength of 535 nm with the optimal excitation wavelength at 400 nm. Specially, F-PDA-MIS could detect P-NP in the range 100 to 1100 nM with much lower detection limit of 24.2 nM within 120 s compared with other conventional imprinted fluorescent sensors based on pure quantum dots (QDs) or dyes. This excellent test phenomenon is mainly ascribed to the rapid electron transfer between F-PDA and P-NP. Satisfactory recovery of 98.0-104% for mineral water and 98.6-106% for boiling water were obtained with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.7-3.4% and 2.6-3.5% respectively. The detection reliability of F-PDA-MIS was verified by the comparison with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV). Consequently, F-PDA as a fluorescence functional monomer has been shown to be a possible strategy to effectively improve the detection limit and shorten response time of the target determination in water..

Abstract
The physiologically important biomolecule, dopamine (DA), shows strong self-oxidation and aggregation behaviors, which have been controlled and modulated to result in fluorescent polydopamine (F-PDA) nanoparticles. On the other hand, the simultaneous binding of two diverse deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) binding probes, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) and ethidium bromide (EtBr), has been elaborately established to follow the Förster-based resonance energy transfer (FRET) pathway. The comparative understanding of this DNA-mediated FRET in three media, phosphate buffer saline (PBS) of pH 7.4, DA, and F-PDA, has concluded that the FRET efficiency in the three media follows the order: PBS > DA > F-PDA. This controlled FRET in the fluorescent F-PDA matrix serves a pivotal role for efficient white light (WL) generation with excellent Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) parameters that match well with that of pure WL emission. The obtained WL emission has been shown to be very specific with respect to concentrations of different participating components and the excitation wavelength of the illuminating source. Furthermore, the optical properties of the WL emitting solution have been observed to be retained excellently inside the well-known agarose gel matrix. Finally, the mechanistic pathway behind such a FRET-based WL generation has been established in detail, and to the best of our knowledge, the current study offers the first and only report that discloses the influence of a fluorescent polyneurotransmitter matrix for successful generation of WL emission.

Abstract
Zinc-based biometal is expected to become a new generation of biodegradable implants. Due to its antibacterial and biocompatibility in vivo, zinc metals is recently considered to be the most promising biodegradable metal, However, cytotoxicity is the thorny problem that currently restrict its application, due to the excessive Zn ions released during degradation. In order to solve these problems, dopamine modified strontium-doped hydroxyapatite coating (SrHA/PDA) was fabricated on alkali-treated pure zinc to improve its corrosion rate and cytocompatibility by electrodeposition for the first time. The obtained coating showed a dense structure and high crystallinity, which was attributed to the attraction of Ca2+ ions by polydopamine. The results showed that the SrHA/PDA coating delayedthe degradation rate of zinc metal, which reduced the release of Zn2+, thereby reducing its cytotoxicity. Additionally, electrochemical tests showed that SrHA/PDA coating can reduce the corrosion rate of pure zinc. In vitro cell viability showed that even at high Zn2+ concentrations (3.11 mg/L), preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) cells proliferated at a high rate on SrHA/PDA, thus confirming that Sr2+ counteracted the cytotoxic effects of Zn2+ and promoted cell differentiation. Moreover, the SrHA/PDA coating still maintained excellent antibacterial effects against pathogenic bacterial strains (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus). Mild pH changes had no significant effect on the viability of cells and bacterias. Collectively, the present study elucidated that by coating SrHA/PDA/Zn(OH)2 on Zn, a controllable corrosion rate, original antibacterial properties and better cell compatibility can be achieved. This provided a new strategy for the surface modification of biodegradable Zn.

Abstract
Multifunctional nanocomposites have drawn great attention in clinical applications because of their ability to integrate diagnostic and therapeutic functions. Manganese dioxide (MnO2), owing to its biocompatibility and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties, has been widely applied in biomedical research. Our previous work on biogenic MnO2 nanoparticles (Bio-MnO2 NPs) revealed that intrinsic photothermal properties and stimuli-responsive MRI imaging are particularly promising for the development of theranostic systems. However, further improvement in the photothermal therapy (PTT) performance of Bio-MnO2 NPs is still required. Herein, we have improved the PTT efficiency of Bio-MnO2 NPs by in situ synthesis of fluorescent polydopamine (PDA) while generating additional stimuli responsive fluorescence properties in this system, thus further broadening the scope of their theranostic functions. These synthesis conditions are mild and green. The fluorescence of PDA was quenched by capping Bio-MnO2 NPs and could be recovered upon degradation of Bio-MnO2 NPs inside tumour cells. Additionally, Mn2+ released from the nanoparticles can support T1-weighted MR imaging. Compared to the Bio-MnO2 NPs alone, the integration of Bio-MnO2 NPs and PDA significantly enhances the photothermal performance in vitro and in vivo. With their high biocompatibility, these multifunctional composite nanodevices hold great potential for fluorescence imaging and MRI-guided photothermal therapy.

Abstract
Phenolics are ubiquitous in nature and have gained immense research attention because of their unique physiochemical properties and widespread industrial use. In recent decades, their accessibility, versatile reactivity, and relative biocompatibility have catalysed research in phenolic-enabled nanotechnology (PEN) particularly for biomedical applications which have been a major benefactor of this emergence, as largely demonstrated by polydopamine and polyphenols. Therefore, it is imperative to overveiw the fundamental mechanisms and synthetic strategies of PEN for state-of-the-art biomedical applications and provide a timely and comprehensive summary. In this review, we will focus on the principles and strategies involved in PEN and summarize the use of the PEN synthetic toolkit for particle engineering and the bottom-up synthesis of nanohybrid materials. Specifically, we will discuss the attractive forces between phenolics and complementary structural motifs in confined particle systems to synthesize high-quality products with controllable size, shape, composition, as well as surface chemistry and function. Additionally, phenolic's numerous applications in biosensing, bioimaging, and disease treatment will be highlighted. This review aims to provide guidelines for new scientists in the field and serve as an up-to-date compilation of what has been achieved in this area, while offering expert perspectives on PEN's use in translational research.

Abstract
Ratiometric fluorescence sensors that are achieved via the ratiometric fluorescence intensity changes of emission peaks based on multi-emission fluorescence probes show a huge advantage. However, the preparation of these multi-emission fluorescence probes is a key challenge, as it is related to having more fluorescence groups with the same excitation but different emission wavelengths, and their assembly is not a simple mixing process. More fluorescent groups or molecules can be assembled into the multi-emission fluorescence probe by covalent bonds and coordination interactions, or by loading in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are excellent candidates for constructing complexes with the capability of multicomponent ratiometric fluorescence sensing, but there are some problems that need to be considered. For example, not all fluorophores can be stably loaded in the MOFs' pores, usually due to the size, surface charge and intrinsic properties of the fluorophore. In turn, it is also related to the structure of the MOF, metal nodes, and properties of the organic ligands. This review first introduces the advantages of the MOF-based multi-component fluorescence sensors, and then discusses the synthesis, classification and application of fluorescent MOFs or MOF composites for multi-component ratiometric fluorescence detection. Particular emphasis is focused on the potential, types and characteristics for sensing and biological applications, and the main challenges and limitations are further explored. This review might be helpful for those researchers interested in the application of multi-component ratiometric fluorescence sensing based on fluorescent MOFs or MOF composites.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has been widely applied to medical interventions for prevention, diagnostics, and therapeutics of diseases, and the application of nanotechnology for medical purposes, which is called as a term "nanomedicine" has received tremendous attention. In particular, the design and development of nanoparticle for biosensors have received a great deal of attention, since those are most impactful area of clinical translation showing potential breakthrough in early diagnosis of diseases such as cancers and infections. For example, the nanoparticles that have intrinsic unique features such as magnetic responsive characteristics or photoluminescence can be utilized for noninvasive visualization of inner body. Drug delivery that makes use of drug-containing nanoparticles as a carrier is another field of study, in which the particulate form nanomedicine is given by parenteral administration for further systemic targeting to pathological tissues. In addition, encapsulation into nanoparticles gives the opportunity to secure the sensitive therapeutic payloads that are readily degraded or deactivated until reached to the target in biological environments, or to provide sufficient solubilization (e.g., to deliver compounds which have physicochemical properties that strongly limit their aqueous solubility and therefore systemic bioavailability). The nanomedicine is further intended to enhance the targeting index such as increased specificity and reduced false binding, thus improve the diagnostic and therapeutic performances. In this chapter, principles of nanomaterials for medicine will be thoroughly covered with applications for imaging-based diagnostics and therapeutics.

Abstract
Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) have attracted broad interest for preparation of functional nanomaterials especially for the synthesis of functional polymers. Herein, we utilized an "old" MCR, the four-component Ugi reaction, to synthesize disulfide bond containing poly(PEG-TPE-DTDPA) amphiphilic copolymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. This four-component Ugi reaction was carried out under rather mild reaction conditions, such as room temperature, no gas protection and absent of catalysts. The amphiphilic poly(PEG-TPE-DTDPA) copolymers with high number-average molecular weight (up to 86,440 Da) can self-assemble into claviform fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) in aqueous solution, and these water-dispersed nanoparticles exhibited strong emission, large Stokes shift (142 nm), low toxicity and remarkable ability in cellular imaging. Moreover, owing to the introduction of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid with disulfide bond, the resultant AIE-active poly(PEG-TPE-DTDPA) could display reduction-responsiveness and be utilized for synthesis of photothermal agents in-situ. Therefore, the AIE-active poly(PEG-TPE-DTDPA) could be promising for controlled intracellular delivery of biological activity molecules and fabrication of multifunctional AIE-active materials. Therefore, these novel AIE-active polymeric nanoparticles could be of great potential for various biomedical applications, such as biological imaging, stimuli-responsive drug delivery and theranostic applications.

Abstract
Bioinspired nanomaterials are ideal components for nanomedicine, by virtue of their expected biocompatibility or even complete lack of toxicity. Natural and artificial melanin-based nanoparticles (MNP), including polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NP), excel for their extraordinary combination of additional optical, electronic, chemical, photophysical, and photochemical properties. Thanks to these features, melanin plays an important multifunctional role in the design of new platforms for nanomedicine where this material works not only as a mechanical support or scaffold, but as an active component for imaging, even multimodal, and simple or synergistic therapy. The number of examples of bio-applications of MNP increased dramatically in the last decade. Here, we review the most recent ones, focusing on the multiplicity of functions that melanin performs in theranostics platforms with increasing complexity. For the sake of clarity, we start analyzing briefly the main properties of melanin and its derivative as well as main natural sources and synthetic methods, moving to imaging application from mono-modal (fluorescence, photoacoustic, and magnetic resonance) to multi-modal, and then to mono-therapy (drug delivery, anti-oxidant, photothermal, and photodynamic), and finally to theranostics and synergistic therapies, including gene- and immuno- in combination to photothermal and photodynamic. Nanomedicine aims not only at the treatment of diseases, but also to their prevention, and melanin in nature performs a protective action, in the form of nanopigment, against UV-Vis radiations and oxidants. With these functions being at the border between nanomedicine and cosmetics nanotechnology, recently examples of applications of artificial MNP in cosmetics are increasing, paving the road to the birth of the new science of nanocosmetics. In the last part of this review, we summarize and discuss these important recent results that establish evidence of the interconnection between nanomedicine and cosmetics nanotechnology.

Abstract
In the last decades, numerous attempts have been made to prevent microbial pollution spreading, using antibacterial agents. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) belongs to a subgroup of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) merits of attention due to the zinc ion clusters and its effective antibacterial activity. In this work, Ag-doped magnetic microporous γ-Fe2O3@SiO2@ZIF-8-Ag (FSZ-Ag) was successfully synthesized by a facile methodology in room temperature and used as an antibacterial agent against the growth of the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Several characterization methods were applied to analyze the properties of the materials, and the results confirmed the accuracy of the synthesis procedure. Silver ions have employed to enhance the efficiency of antibacterial activity. As the results illustrated, FSZ-Ag nanostructured material had superior performance to inactive E. coli and S. aureus in growth inhibition test in liquid media. The best antibacterial activity as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 100 mg/L of FSZ-Ag against both bacteria. Leaching rates of silver ions showed that 80% of Ag released in the solutions, which was responsible for inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Also, fluorescence microscopy was used to investigate bacterial viability after 20 h contacting FSZ-Ag to distinguish live and dead bacteria by staining with DAPI and PI fluorescence stains. This novel magnetic nanostructured material is an excellent promising candidate to use in biological applications as high potential bactericidal materials.

Abstract
Herein, we report a degradable film that can be coated on various substrates by the codeposition of dopamine and cystamine. The thickness of the resulting film (pDC) varies depending on the initial ratio of dopamine/cystamine dissolved in a solution; the thickest film (ca. 60 nm) is obtained under optimized codeposition conditions. Selective degradation of pDC occurs in the presence of tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP), the reaction kinetics of which are highly dependent on the TCEP concentration. For further application as a drug-delivery platform, doxorubicin can be loaded within the pDC film, which is released actively under film degradation in response to TCEP. We expect that the developed pDC film will be a useful tool for developing drug delivery cargo, antibacterial surface, and cell surface coating for various biomedical applications.

Abstract
The controlled release of a drug considers the key feature of the delivery carrier that enhances therapeutic efficacy. This study was aimed at design, synthesis of nano valve and capping systems onto caged functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (SBA15) with nanoflowers polylactic acid (PLA-NF). Levofloxacin (LVX) as a specific model drug was encapsulated onto series; SBA15, SBA15@NH2, and SBA15@NH2/PLA. The examined nanocarriers released in a controlled fashion by external stimuli. The delivery vehicle based on PLA-NF coated SBA15@NH2, potent conjugated with LVX with experienced a high extent of trapping content with fast releasing by pH regulating mechanism. In vial LVX released profile and in vitro antifungal forceful of the selected microbes were detected. However, SBA15@NH2/PLA exhibited pore size, surface area and pore volume 5.4 nm, 163 and 0.011 respectively, but the significantly clear zone was obtained with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (G+ve), Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (G-ve), Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (yeast) and Aspergillus niger NRRL A-326 (fungus). Viability test avouch that rising functionality enhanced cytocompatibility and non-toxicity profile. Based on the aforementioned promising data, this type of nanocarriers offers when functionalized with targeting cells, the accessibility to deliver antibiotics onto nanosystem for increased potency against microbes and reduce side effects.
