Occurrence, distribution and risks of antibiotics in urban surface water in Beijing, China

Spatiotemporal variations and priority ranking of emerging contaminants in nanwan reservoir: A case study from the agricultural region in huaihe river basin in China

The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in drinking water sources is an increasing concern, yet limited data exists on their occurrence and risk in the upper Huaihe River Basin, an important agricultural region in Central China. This study investigated 70 ECs, including pesticide and antibiotics in surface water from drinking water source areas in Nanwan Reservoir along the upper reaches of the Huaihe River Basin to prioritize the ECs based on ecological risk and health risk assessment. A total of 66 ECs were detected in the surface water at least once at the selected 38 sampling sites, with concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 2508 ng/L. Ecological risk assessment using the risk quotient (RQ) method revealed high risks (RQ > 1) from 7 ECs in the dry season and 15 ECs in the wet season, with triazine pesticides as the main contributors. Non-carcinogenic risks were below negligible levels, but carcinogenic risks from neonicotinoid and carbamate pesticides and macrolide antibiotics were concerning for teenagers. Ciprofloxacin exhibited a high level of resistance risk during the wet season. A multi-indicator prioritization approach integrating occurrence, risk, and chemical property data ranked 6 pesticides and 3 antibiotics as priority pollutants. The results highlight EC contamination of drinking water sources in this agriculturally-intensive region and the need for targeted monitoring and management to protect water quality.

Pollution levels and ecological risks of PPCPs in water and sediment samples of Danjiangkou Reservoir

The concentrations and distribution patterns of three typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water and sediment samples obtained from Danjiangkou Reservoir during two seasonal sampling periods were studied to determine their impact on water quality. The temporal and spatial variations in concentrations measured were analyzed and related to ecological risks with data obtained during the mean-flow period (in June) and the dry period (in November). We found a high detection rate of ketoprofen (KTP) in water samples from Danjiangkou Reservoir; the concentrations ranged from not detected (ND) to 46.80 ng/L with the highest values measured in the Hanku tributary samples followed by the samples collected in the main body of Danjiangkou Reservoir. The KTP concentrations in the Danku tributary samples were the lowest measured in this study. In addition, the concentrations of KTP in the Shending River, Sihe River, Jianghe River, Guanshan River, and Jianhe River water samples were relatively high in the mean-flow period. The water sample detection rates and concentrations of triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) were low in both the mean-flow period and the dry period. All three kinds of PPCPs were detected in the sediment samples with the concentrations of KTP, TCS, and TCC ranging from 0.76 to 7.89 μg/kg, 0.01 to 0.59 μg/kg, and 0.01 to 11.36 μg/kg, respectively. Overall, the concentrations of the three measured PPCPs in the water and sediment samples were all relatively low compared to results reported in the recent literature. The dry period concentrations of PPCPs in the water samples were lower than the concentrations measured in the mean-flow period. However, dry period concentrations were higher in the sediment samples compared to those in the mean-flow period samples. Our interpretation of the spatial and temporal patterns of PPCPs in Danjiangkou Reservoir suggests that these compounds were likely mainly derived from wastewater discharge in the upper reaches of the reservoir. The risk quotient (RQ) method was used for an ecological risk assessment of the detected PPCPs in this study. We found that TCS in water and sediment posed medium ecological risks to algae at different times of the year. In view of the extreme importance of water safety in Danjiangkou Reservoir, the ecological risks of PPCPs require additional attention.

Urban agglomerations as an environmental dimension of antibiotics transmission through the "One Health" lens

The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in different media have been widely reported; however, their occurrence in the environmental dimension of the Chinese urban agglomerations has received less attention, especially in bioaccumulation and health risks of antibiotics through the "One Health" lens. The review presents the current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation, as well as health exposure risks in urban agglomerations through the "One Health" lens, and identifies current information gaps. The reviewed studies suggested antibiotic concentrations in water and soil were more sensitive to social indicators of urban agglomerations than those in sediment. The ecological risk and resistance risk of antibiotics in water were much higher than those of sediments, and the high-risk phenomenon occurred at a higher frequency in urban agglomerations. Erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O), amoxicillin (AMOX) and norfloxacin (NFC) were priority-controlled antibiotics in urban waters. Tetracyclines (TCs) posed medium to high risks to soil organisms in the soil of urban agglomerations. Health risk evaluation based on dietary intake showed that children had the highest dietary intake of antibiotics in urban agglomerations. The health risk of antibiotics was higher in children than in other age groups. Our results also demonstrated that dietary structure might impact health risks associated with target antibiotics in urban agglomerations to some extent.

Micropollutants but high risks: Human multiple stressors increase risks of freshwater ecosystems at the megacity-scale

Micropollutants in water environments have attracted widespread attention, but how human and natural stressors influence the risks of micropollutants has not been comprehensively revealed. A megacity-scale study of the ecological risks of micropollutants in the surface water of Beijing, China is presented to illustrate the magnitudes of the influences of multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors. A total of 133 micropollutants representing typical land use patterns in Beijing, were quantified with the mean concentration range of ND (not detected) to 272 ng·L-1. The micropollutant concentrations in the south were obviously higher than those detected in the northern areas, and neonicotinoid pesticides showed the highest mean concentration of 311 ng·L-1. The chronic and acute risks of micropollutants to algae, invertebrates, and fishes were determined, and herbicides, organophosphorus esters, and insecticides account for the primary risks to algae, invertebrates, and fishes, respectively. The cropland and impervious cover cause the differences in the pollution and risks of micropollutants. The land use in riparian zones greater than 2 km shows a great influence on the chronic chemical risks (CCRs) for the three groups of species, indicating that too local scale does not explain the local pollution status. Climate conditions and human land use are important drivers explaining the CCRs to which various trophic levels of species are exposed. Results demonstrate that multiple categories of micropollutants pose adverse risks to freshwater in the megacity of Beijing, while climate conditions, pollution discharge, and human land use induce the chemical risk of micropollutants to aquatic organisms, and the land use in different riparian zones show different effects on the risks.

Ranking the risks of eighty pharmaceuticals in surface water of a megacity: A multilevel optimization strategy

Pharmaceuticals in freshwater posed ecological risks to aquatic ecosystem, however, most risk assessments of pharmaceuticals were conducted at screening level, which were limited by the availability of the toxicity data. In this study, risks of 80 pharmaceuticals including 35 antibiotics, 13 antiviral drugs, 13 illicit drugs, and 19 antidepressants in surface water of Beijing were assessed with a proposed multilevel environmental risk optimization strategy. Target pharmaceuticals were detected in surface water samples with the detection frequency from 1.7 % to 100 % and the total concentrations from 31.1 ng/L to 2708 ng/L. Antiviral drugs were the dominant pharmaceuticals. Preliminary screening-level risk assessment indicated that 20 pharmaceuticals posed low to high risks with risk quotient from 0.14 (chloroquine diphosphate) to 27.8 (clarithromycin). Thirteen pharmaceuticals were recognized with low to high risks by an optimized risk assessment method. Of them, the refined probabilistic risk assessment of joint probability curves coupling with a quantitative structure activity relationship-interspecies correlation estimation (QSAR-ICE) model was applied. Clarithromycin, erythromycin and ofloxacin were identified to pose low risks with maximum risk products (RP) of 1.23 %, 0.41 % and 0.35 %, respectively, while 10 pharmaceuticals posed de minimis risks. Structural equation modeling disclosed that human land use and climate conditions influenced the risks of pharmaceuticals by indirectly influencing the concentrations of pharmaceuticals. The results indicated that the multilevel strategy coupling with QSAR-ICE model was appropriate and effective for screening priority pollutants, and the strategy can be used to prioritize pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment.

Occurrence, spatial distribution and ecological risks of antibiotics in soil in urban agglomeration

Antibiotics in soil environment are regarded as emerging pollutants and have introduced increasing risks to soil ecosystem and human health in rapid urbanization areas. Identifying the occurrence and spatial variability of antibiotics in soils is an urgent issue in sustaining soil security. In this study, antibiotics in soils were investigated and analyzed in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration. The occurrence, spatial distribution, and related affecting factors of antibiotics in soils were identified and ecological risks of antibiotics in soil environment were assessed. Results showed that (1) The mean concentration of soil antibiotics in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration was 21.79 µg/kg. Land use substantially affected the occurrence and concentration of antibiotics in soils. Concentrations of antibiotics in cropland and orchard soils were 2-3 times higher than the other land use types. (2) The concentrations of antibiotics in soils in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration presented a spatial pattern of high values in southeast, and low values in northwest. Spatial variability of antibiotics in soils was closely related to the application of organic fertilizer and wastewater irrigation as well as topographical features. Furthermore, soil properties and land management policy had substantial influences on soil antibiotics, and soil heavy metals may aggravate the accumulation of antibiotics in soils. (3) Ecological risks assessment of antibiotics in soils demonstrated that erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and doxycycline (DOX) may introduce high risks to soil ecosystem health, and more attention should be paid to the areas with intensive human activities that had potential high risk to soil ecosystem health. This study suggests that scientific land and soil management should be considered to prevent soil antibiotic pollution and sustain soil security in urban agglomeration.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the surface water of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section)

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly seen emerging organic contaminants in aquatic environments. The transects for the occurrence and distribution of 24 PPCPs along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section) were investigated in this study. All 24 targeted compounds were detected in surface water, with concentrations in the range from not detected (ND) to 527.4 ng/L. Among these PPCPs, caffeine is found to have the highest concentration and its detection frequency is 100%. The total PPCP concentration ranged from 136 ng/L to 916 ng/L (median, 319.5 ng/L). Spatial analysis showed that the pollution level of PPCPs in the trunk stream was lower than that in most tributaries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that norfloxacin, azithromycin, estrone, and triclosan posed high risks to aquatic organisms (RQ > 1), roxithromycin and oxytetracycline imposed moderate risks (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1), and the tributary Jindi River had the highest mixed risk (MRQ = 222).

Seasonal variation and ecological risk assessment of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in a typical semi-enclosed bay - The Bohai Bay in northern China

The Bohai Bay as a typical semi-enclosed bay in northern China with poor water exchange capacity and significant coastal urbanization, is greatly influenced by land-based inputs and human activities. As a class of pseudo-persistent organic pollutants, the spatial and temporal distribution of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) is particularly important to the ecological environment, and it will be imperfect to assess the ecological risk of PPCPs for the lack of systematic investigation of their distribution in different season. 14 typical PPCPs were selected to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution in the Bohai Bay by combining online solid-phase extraction (SPE) and HPLC-MS/MS techniques in this study, and their ecological risks to aquatic organisms were assessed by risk quotients (RQs) and concentration addition (CA) model. It was found that PPCPs widely presented in the Bohai Bay with significant differences of spatial and seasonal distribution. The concentrations of ∑PPCPs were higher in autumn than in summer. The distribution of individual pollutants also showed significant seasonal differences. The high values were mainly distributed in estuaries and near-shore outfalls. Mariculture activities in the northern part of the Bohai Bay made a greater contribution to the input of PPCPs. Caffeine, florfenicol, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin were the main pollutants in the Bohai Bay, with detection frequencies exceeding 80 %. The ecological risk of PPCPs to algae was significantly higher than that to invertebrates and fish. CA model indicated that the potential mixture risk of total PPCPs was not negligible, with 34 % and 88 % of stations having mixture risk in summer and autumn, respectively. The temporary stagnation of productive life caused by Covid-19 weakened the input of PPCPs to the Bohai Bay, reducing the cumulative effects of the pollutants. This study was the first full-coverage investigation of PPCPs in the Bohai Bay for different seasons, providing an important basis for the ecological risk assessment and pollution prevention of PPCPs in the bay.

Antibiotics and antimycotics in waste water treatment plants: Concentrations, removal efficiency, spatial and temporal variations, prediction, and ecological risk assessment

For investigating the spatial, temporal variations and assessing ecological risk of 10 antibiotics and 6 antimycotics, influent sewage water and treated effluent were collected during three different seasons in 19 waste water treatment plants of Tianjin. High performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used to analyze 16 substances. The concentration range of influent samples was not detected (nd) -547.94 ng/L and the concentration range of effluent samples was nd-52.97 ng/L. By calculating the removal efficiency, it was found that Ciprofloxacin (CIP), Ofloxacin (OFL) and Clotrimazole (CTR) were effectively removed. There were significant spatial and temporal differences, the concentration in the dry season was evidently higher than that in the wet and normal seasons, and the northeast was lower than that in the northwest and southeast. By establishing a data set of influent and effluent, the priority features were extracted by feature engineering, which were temperature and NH₃-N. Under the condition of ensuring the best performance of the models, the influent model with 9 features and the effluent model with 4 features were established, and the quantitative relationship between the above features and concentration was obtained through partial dependence analysis. Except for Moxifloxacin (MOX), Norfloxacin (NOR) and OFL in the influent samples, the RQ values for other antibiotics and antimycotics were less than 0.1. Among the effluent samples, only NOR had an RQ value greater than 0.1, and OFL, MOX, and Pefloxacin (PEF) had RQ values between 0.01 and 0.1. Comparing the observations and predictions individual RQ values, the predictions were ideal and matched the observations. This work effectively assessed environmental impact and provided a valuable reference for evaluating antibiotics and antimycotics ecological toxicity.

Unraveling the effects of sulfamethoxazole on the composition of gut microbiota and immune responses in Stichopus variegatus

The aim of this work was to reveal the changes in gut microbiota composition and immune responses of sea cucumber (Stichopus variegatus) after being affected by different doses of sulfamethoxazole. In this study, the bacterial 16S rRNA of gut microbiota were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing, and the activities of immune enzymes [lysozyme (LZM), phenoloxidase (PO), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and acid phosphatase (ACP)] in the gut of S. variegatus were determined. The results showed that the gut microbiota presented a lower richness in the antibiotic treatment groups compared with the control group, and there were significant differences among the dominant bacteria of different concentration treatments. At the genus level, the abundance of Escherichia, Exiguobacterium, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Thalassotalea were significantly decreased in the 3 mg/L treatment group, while Vibrio was significantly increased. Furthermore, the 6 mg/L treatment group had less effect on these intestinal dominant bacteria, especially Vibrio. The changes in relative abundance of Vibrio at the species level indicated that lower concentrations of sulfamethoxazole could enhance the enrichment of Vibrio mediterranei and Vibrio fortis in S. variegatus more than higher concentrations of sulfamethoxazole. Meanwhile, the 3 mg/L treatment group significantly increased the activities of PO, AKP, and ACP, and decreased the activity of LZM. These results suggested that lower doses of sulfamethoxazole have a greater effect on the gut microbiota composition and immune responses in S. variegatus and may increase the risk of host infection.

Antibiotic resistome and its driving factors in an urban river in northern China

Urban rivers dynamically interfered by anthropogenic activities are considered as a vital reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Here, a total of 198 ARGs and 12 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were profiled in water and sediment from the Chaobai river, Beijing. The total abundances of ARGs (1.01 × 10⁶-4.58 × 10⁸ copies/L in water and 2.92 × 10⁶-3.34 × 10⁹ copies/g in sediment), which were dominated by beta-lactamase genes, exhibited significant seasonal variations (p < 0.05). Significant linear correlations between the total abundances of ARGs and MGEs were observed in both water and sediment (p < 0.01). Variance partitioning analysis disclosed that environmental variables (i.e., water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients, metals, etc.) and antibiotics were the main contributors to the variations of ARGs and MGEs, and explained 55-80 % and 27-67 % of the total variations in ARGs and MGEs, respectively. The partial least-squares path model revealed the ARG abundances in water and sediment were affected by environmental variables and antibiotics both directly and indirectly but by MGEs directly. Moreover, random forest algorithm explored that WT, Ni, DO, Co, and polyether and macrolide antibiotics were the main drivers (>10 %) of ARGs dissemination in water, whereas the transposase genes of Tp614, tnpA, and IS613 were the main drivers of ARGs dissemination in both water and sediment. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the driving factors for the ARGs dissemination in an urban river, which is of great significance for risk management of antibiotic resistome.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in the Aquatic Environment of the Karst Plateau Wetland of Yangtze River Basin, Southwestern China

In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 40 commonly used antibiotics, including 15 sulfonamides (SAs), 9 fluoroquinolones (FQs), 7 macrolides (MCs), 3 tetracyclines (TCs), 2 chloramphenicols (CAPs), and 4 other categories, in the aquatic environment of the karst plateau wetland Caohai of the Yangtze River basin in southwestern China are reported. In total, 27 antibiotics were detected, with the detection rate ranging from 5% to 100%. The total concentration at each site ranged from 21.8 ng/L to 954 ng/L, with the average concentration being 189 ng/L. FQs and MCs were the most predominant categories, contributing 29.3% and 25.0% of the total antibiotic burden. The five most commonly detected antibiotics were ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC), acetyl sulfamethoxazole (ASMZ), norfloxacin (NOR), and florfenicol (FF). The spatial distribution of the total concentration at each site demonstrated a decreasing trend from the southeastern area upstream adjoining the main counties to the northwestern area downstream, indicating that human activities have a great impact. Meanwhile, the natural attenuation rates of different types of antibiotics in the direction of flow ranged from 17.6% to 100%, which implied the natural purification potential of the wetland for antibiotics. The cluster analysis results indicated that domestic sewage and wastewater from agriculture and animal husbandry were the main sources of contamination in the surrounding wetland. Risk quotients (RQs) assessment showed that most of the individuals were at low to medium risk and that the adverse risks posed by mixtures of antibiotics were higher than those posed by the individual antibiotics.

Environmental and human health risk assessment of mixture of Covid-19 treating pharmaceutical drugs in environmental waters

This study identified ecological and human health risks exposure of COVID-19 pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in environmental waters. Environmental concentrations in aquatic species were predicted using surface water concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds. Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNEC) in aquatic organisms (green algae, daphnia, and fish) was estimated using EC50/LC50 values of pharmaceutical compounds taken from USEPA ECOSAR database. PNEC for human health risks was calculated using the acceptable daily intake values of drugs. Ecological PNEC revealed comparatively high values in algae (Chronic toxicity PNEC values, high to low: ribavirin (2.65 × 105 μg/L) to ritonavir (2.3 × 10-1 μg/L)) than daphnia and fish. Risk quotient (RQ) analysis revealed that algae (Avg. = 2.81 × 104) appeared to be the most sensitive species to pharmaceutical drugs followed by daphnia (Avg.: 1.28 × 104) and fish (Avg.: 1.028 × 103). Amongst the COVID-19 metabolites, lopinavir metabolites posed major risk to aquatic species. Ritonavir (RQ = 6.55) is the major drug responsible for human health risk through consumption of food (in the form fish) grown in pharmaceutically contaminated waters. Mixture toxicity analysis of drugs revealed that algae are the most vulnerable species amongst the three trophic levels. Maximum allowable concentration level for mixture of pharmaceuticals was found to be 0.53 mg/L.

Antibiotics adaptation costs alter carbon sequestration strategies of microorganisms in karst river

Karst ecosystems make an important contribution to the global carbon cycle, in which carbon-fixing microorganisms play a vital role. However, the healthy functioning of karst ecosystems is threatened because pollutants easily diffuse and spread through them due to their strong hydraulic connectivity. The microbiome of a karst river contaminated with antibiotics was studied. Through co-occurrence network analysis, six ecological clusters (MOD 1-MOD 6) with different distribution characteristics were determined, of which four were significantly correlated with antibiotics. The carbon fixation pathways in different ecological clusters were varied, and the dominant hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutyrate cycle and reductive acetyl-CoA pathway were negatively and positively correlated with antibiotics, respectively. Long-term antibiotic contamination altered the selection of carbonic anhydrase (CA) encoding genes in some of the CA-producing mineralization microorganisms. The selection of different carbon fixation pathways is a possible strategy for the microbial community to compensate for the adaptation costs associated with the pressure of antibiotics contamination and emergence of antibiotics resistance. Bayesian network analysis revealed that some carbon sequestration functions (such as β-CA and reductive acetyl-CoA pathway) surpassed certain antibiotic resistance genes in the regulation of environmental factors and microbial networks. An ecological cluster (MOD5) that possibly homologous to antibiotic contamination was the final node of the microbial community in karst river, which indicated that ecological clusters were not only selected by antibiotics, but were also regulated by multiple environmental factors in the karst river system. The carbon sequestration pathway was more directly reflected in the abundance of ecological groups than in the influence of CA. This study provides new insights into the feedback effect of karst system on typical pollutants generated from human activities.

Long-term low-dose oxytetracycline potentially leads to neurobehavioural changes

Trace levels of oxytetracycline (OTC)-a veterinary antibiotic and feed additive-are widespread in the environment. Studies revealed that OTC potentially impairs thyroid function, which may affect neurobehaviour; however, the impact of exposure to environmental concentrations of OTC on adult neurobehaviour is unknown. In this study, the effects of OTC on zebrafish after 30-day exposure were investigated. The total swimming distance was significantly increased under vibration and light/dark stimulation, while time spent in the white area was prolonged during the black/white preference test, indicating that the zebrafish became bolder and more impulsive under low OTC exposure. Additionally, monoamine neurotransmitter (5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, norepinephrine) levels were decreased and gene expression of monoamine oxidase (mao) involved in neurotransmitter metabolism was upregulated at the transcription level after OTC exposure. Because triiodothyronine (T3) levels were enhanced following exposure to OTC, we speculated that T3 may mediate OTC damage to the nervous system. Our simulated molecular docking analysis showed that OTC combined with the sodium iodide cotransporter protein may result in excessive T3 synthesis. We further exposed zebrafish to T3, and they exhibited similar behaviour to the OTC exposure group. In conclusion, environmental OTC may activate monoamine oxidase and enhance the metabolism of monoaminergic neurotransmitters via T3, thereby inducing abnormal neurobehaviour.

Antibiotic residues in the aquatic environment - current perspective and risk considerations

Antimicrobial resistance is a major concern for human and animal health, projected to deteriorate with time and given current trends of antimicrobial usage. Antimicrobial use, particularly in healthcare and agriculture, can result in the release of antimicrobials into surface waters, promoting the development of antibiotic resistance in the environment, and potentially leading to human health risks. This study reviews relevant literature, and investigates current European and Irish antimicrobial usage trends in humans and animals, as well as potential pathways that antibiotics can take into surface waters following use. Reported levels in the aquatic environment are summarized, with particular focus on Ireland. There are relatively few studies examining Irish water bodies or sewage effluent for antibiotic residues, however, five antibiotics, namely azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, and trimethoprim, have been measured in Irish waters, in concentrations predicted to select for resistance. Numerous isolates of multi-drug resistant bacteria have also been found in water bodies throughout Ireland and Europe. The value of risk assessment methodologies in understanding risks posed by antibiotic residues is reviewed including the advantages and disadvantages of specific approaches. Hazard quotient and bespoke Monte Carlo approaches are predominant risk assessment tools used to examine antimicrobial release and their complex pathways. This study highlights the need for monitoring of antimicrobial releases and the potential for resistance development, persistence and transmission while highlighting the role of risk assessment methodologies in assessing potential human and environmental health impacts.

A review of distribution and risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the aquatic environment in China

Due to the extensive use and pseudo-persistence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), they are frequently detected in the aqueous environment, which has attracted global attention. In this paper, accumulation data of 81 PPCPs in surface water or sediment in China were reported. In addition, 20 kinds of PPCPs with high frequency were selected and their ecological risk assessment was conducted by risk quotient (RQs). The results indicated that the concentration detected in surface water and sediment ranged from ng/L (ng/kg) to μg/L (μg/kg) in China, which was similar to concentrations reported globally. However, contamination by certain PPCPs, such as caffeine, oxytetracycline, and erythromycin, was relatively high with a maximum concentration of more than 2000 ng/L in surface water. RQs revealed that 14 kinds of PPCPs pose no significant risk or low risk to aquatic organisms, while 6 kinds of PPCPs pose a high risk. Additionally, the pollution characteristics of PPCPs in each watershed are different. The Haihe River watershed and the central and lower Yangtze River were the regions of high concern for erythromycin. Triclosan has potential risks in the Pearl River watershed. This study determined the occurrence and risk of PPCPs in China in the past decade, providing a scientific basis for PPCPs pollution control and risk prevention.

Antibiotic pollution promotes dominance by harmful cyanobacteria: A case study examining norfloxacin exposure in competition experiments

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in freshwater lakes across the globe are often combined with other stressors. Pharmaceutical pollution, especially antibiotics in water bodies, poses a potential hazard in aquatic ecosystems. However, how antibiotics influence the risk of cyanoHABs remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of norfloxacin (NOR), one of the most widely used antibiotics globally, to a bloom-forming cyanobacterium (Microcystis aeruginosa) and a common green alga (Scenedesmus quadricauda), under both mono- and coculture conditions. Taxon-specific responses to NOR were evaluated in monoculture. In addition, the growth rate and change in ratio of cyanobacteria to green algae when cocultured with exposure to NOR were determined. In monocultures of Microcystis, exposure to low concentrations of NOR resulted in decreases in biomass, chlorophyll a and soluble protein content, while superoxide anion content and superoxide dismutase activity increased. However, NOR at high concentration only slightly affected Scenedesmus. During the co-culture trials of Microcystis and Scenedesmus, the 5 μg · L^-1 NOR treatment increased the ratio of Microcystis to co-cultured Scenedesmus by 47.2%. Meanwhile, although Scenedesmus growth was enhanced by 4.2% under NOR treatment in monoculture, it was conversely inhibited by 63.4% and 38.2% when co-cultured with Microcystis with and without NOR, respectively. Our results indicate that antibiotic pollution has a potential risk to enhance the perniciousness of cyanoHABs by disturbing interspecific interaction between cyanobacteria and green algae. These results reinforce the need for scientists and managers to consider the influence of xenobiotics in shaping the outcome of interactions among multiple species in aquatic ecosystems.

Antibiotics in the surface water of Shanghai, China: screening, distribution, and indicator selecting

The widespread existence of antibiotics has caused inevitable influence on ecology and humans. In this study, we screened the most commonly used antibiotics, and 64 antibiotics were detected in Shanghai, an international metropolis. Most of the target substances were detected in all 46 water samples including main rivers and districts in Shanghai, with concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 502.43 ng L^-1. In particular, sulfadiazine (502.43 ng L^-1) had the highest maximum concentration. Besides, risk quotients based on fish suggested that sulfonamides had a medium risk (0.12) in Shanghai. Correlation studies had shown that most compounds with frequencies exceeding 60% were significantly positively correlated with the total concentration. Based on further analysis, sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfapyridine were screened as indicators to reflect the pollution status of antibiotics in Shanghai for a long time. The screening conditions for these indicators include detection rate (> 60%), maximum concentration (> 100 ng L^-1), RQ (> 0.01), and correlation (> 0). In addition, population density may be the main factor for antibiotic pollution through regional comparison. In a word, this work can systematically reflect the overall situation of Shanghai antibiotics and provide support for global data comparison in the future. Meanwhile, we provided the potential indicators that can be applied in the long term and economical monitoring of antibiotics.

Mixture toxicity effects of chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, florfenicol in Daphnia magna under different temperatures

Acute toxicities of chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP), and florfenicol (FLO) and their mixtures on Daphnia magna under two representative temperatures of the aquatic environment (20 and 25 °C) have been examined. Their toxicities depicted with an order of 72-h EC₅₀ values were as follows: CAP > FLO > TAP and CAP ≈ FLO > TAP under 20 and 25 °C, separately. Furthermore, the acute toxicity significantly increased with the rise of temperature from 20 to 25 °C in nearly all separate and mixture phenicol antibiotics. Meanwhile, the most toxic combination under two different temperatures was diverse. The nature of toxicological interactions of phenicol antibiotic mixtures was analyzed by Combination Index (CI) equation. In general, a dual synergism-antagonism effect was dominant in nearly all mixtures at both temperatures. The prediction suitability of Concentration Addition (CA), Independent Action (IA) models, and CI method was compared, suggesting that the CI equation seems to be more appropriate for predicting the toxicity values of phenicol drugs than CA and IA models. In brief, phenicol antibiotic mixtures with temperature variation may pose more significant hazards and risks to aquatic organisms; hence, the environment.

Response of microbial communities of karst river water to antibiotics and microbial source tracking for antibiotics

In southwestern China, karst river water is the main source of water for humans. As emerging pollutants, antibiotics have contaminated karst river water in some areas for a long time. Microbiota is highly susceptible to environmental changes, and can be used in tracing the source of antibiotics in complex systems such as karst water. Ten karst river water samples were collected along the river flow. The diversity and structure of the microbial community were analyzed together with environmental factors through correlation analysis, the random forest algorithm and co-occurrence network analysis. At genus level, Arcobacter was significantly positively correlated with the antibiotics, indicating that Arcobacter and antibiotics probably came from the same source. Based on co-occurrence network analysis between microbes, the microbial community was divided into eight modules, and the relative abundance of three modules was significantly correlated with antibiotics. The co-occurrence networks between bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) showed that pathogenic bacteria potentially carried multiple ARGs. This could increase the disease risk to humans and disease transmission in the study area. When river water flowed underground, the concentration of antibiotics decreased for the two underground river outlet sites, but abundance of bacteria and ARGs increased. Microbial source tracking studies showed that contamination was derived from humans rather than livestock. The ranking importance of prediction for antibiotics in this study area from random forest follows: specific bacteria Arcobacter > ARGs > ecological clusters. This study will be helpful in identifying the effect of antibiotics discharge on the microbial community, improving evaluation of antibiotics' risks and contaminants source tracking.

Spiramycin adsorption behavior on activated bentonite, activated carbon and natural phosphate in aqueous solution

Efficacy of activated bentonite, activated carbon, and natural phosphate under experimental conditions was tested as low-cost adsorbents for spiramycin antibiotic removal from aqueous solution. Equilibrium kinetic and isotherm adsorption process are well described by pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm models for activated bentonite and activated carbon, while natural phosphate follows pseudo-first order and Freundlich models, respectively. Obtained results revealed that activated bentonite has the highest adsorption capacity (260.3 mg/g) as compared to activated carbon (80.3 mg/g) and natural phosphate (1.7 mg/g). The adsorption capacity decreases for all adsorbents in the presence of NaCl. The adsorption processes are facilitated in the alkaline pH range for activated bentonite and activated carbon, whereas, for natural phosphate, the acidic pH range is favorable. They are involving ion exchange and hydrogen bond mechanisms as well as Van der Waals forces and also π interactions for activated carbon. Thermodynamic calculation shows that spiramycin adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous on all adsorbents. The activated bentonite reusability is more efficient by more than 95% in two-step desorption using NaOH and HCl eluents compared to activated carbon. Thus, activated bentonite is a promising adsorbent for spiramycin removal from aqueous solution.

Occurrence and fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in typical urban water of Beijing, China

The pollution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has been highlighted on a global scale because of their serious threats to the environment and human health. Typical urban water in cities with high population density are ideal mediums for the acquisition and spread of antibiotics and ARGs. The pollution level of a broad range of antibiotics and ARGs in hospital wastewater, groundwater and the Wenyu River, and their fates through three sewage treatment plants (STPs) were investigated in this study. The concentrations of the 11 detected antibiotics ranged from not detected (ND)-16800 ng L^-1 in diverse water samples from Beijing, and fluoroquinolones were detected at the highest concentration, especially in the hospital samples. The maximum concentrations of antibiotics in STPs and hospital were 1-3 orders of magnitude higher than those in the surface water from Wenyu River and groundwater. Good removal efficiencies by treatment processes were observed for tetracyclines and quinolones, and low removal efficiencies were observed for sulfonamides and macrolides. These results also revealed that the sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2) and macrolide resistance genes (ermB) were detected at the highest relative abundances (7.11 × 10^-2-1.18 × 10^-1) in the water bodies of Beijing. It was worth noting that sul1 abundance was the highest in groundwater samples. The relative abundance of most ARGs in STPs exhibited a declining trend in the order of influent > secondary effluents > effluent. However, the relative abundance of sul 1, sul 2 and tetC in the effluent was higher than those in the influent. The incomplete removal of antibiotics and ARGs in STPs poses a serious threat to the receiving rivers, and affects ecosystem security. Overall, our findings provide favorable support for a further investigation of the spread and risk of antibiotics and ARGs from diverse sources (e.g., STPs and hospitals) to the aquatic environment.

Antibiotic distribution, risk assessment, and microbial diversity in river water and sediment in Hong Kong

For the past fewer years, environment antibiotic residues have got more and more attention. The occurrence and distribution of eight common antibiotics, belonging to five classes, were determined in both water and sediment of eleven rivers of Hong Kong. The target antibiotics were found to be widely distributed. Sulfamethoxazole (n.d.-79.9 ng/L), sulfadimidine (n.d.-29.9 ng/L), and ofloxacin (n.d.-75.5 ng/L) were the dominant antibiotics in river water, with detection rates of 84.6, 76.9, and 69.2%, respectively. Tetracycline (n.d.-9.8 ng/g) was the dominant antibiotic in sediment, with a detection rate of 60%. The concentrations of all antibiotics in river water of Hong Kong were lower than which in various rivers of Europe, North America and Australia, as well as the Pearl River Basin of China. All sediment sites exhibited significant bacterial diversity. Gammaproteobacteria (0.08-12.7%) and Flavobacteria (0.14-14.1%) were the dominant bacterial classes in all sediments. The bacterial compositions varied between sites; areas polluted with high levels of antibiotics had rich and highly diverse bacterial communities. The environmental risk assessment determined that the antibiotics in 73.1% of the samples posed ecological risks to algae, and two samples posed low risks to invertebrates. Ofloxacin was the main contributor of risk to aquatic organisms, while the antibiotics in 11.5% of the samples posed resistance selection risks. Environmental concentrations of antibiotics impair zebrafish gut health

Antibiotics have been widely used in human and veterinary medicine to both treat and prevent disease. Due to their high water solubility and low bioavailability, many antibiotic residues have been found in aquatic environments. Fish are an indispensable link between the environmental pollution and human health. However, the chronic effects of environmental concentrations of antibiotics in fish have not been thoroughly investigated. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and oxytetracycline (OTC) are frequently detected in aquatic environments. In this study, zebrafish were exposed to SMX (260 ng/L) and OTC (420 ng/L) for a six-week period. Results indicated that exposure to antibiotics did not influence weight gain of fish but increased the metabolic rate and caused higher mortality when treated fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Furthermore, exposure to antibiotics in water resulted in a significant decrease in intestinal goblet cell numbers, alkaline phosphatase (AKP), acid phosphatase (ACP) activities, and the anti-oxidant response while there was a significant increase in expression of inflammatory factors. Antibiotic exposure also disturbed the intestinal microbiota in the OTC-exposed group. Our results indicated that environmental antibiotic concentrations can impair the gut health of zebrafish. The potential health risk of antibiotic residues in water should be evaluated in the future.

A review on environmental monitoring of water organic pollutants identified by EU guidelines

The contamination of fresh water is a global concern. The huge impact of natural and anthropogenic organic substances that are constantly released into the environment, demands a better knowledge of the chemical status of Earth's surface water. Water quality monitoring studies have been performed targeting different substances and/or classes of substances, in different regions of the world, using different types of sampling strategies and campaigns. This review article aims to gather the available dispersed information regarding the occurrence of priority substances (PSs) and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) that must be monitored in Europe in surface water, according to the European Union Directive 2013/39/EU and the Watch List of Decision 2015/495/EU, respectively. Other specific organic pollutants not considered in these EU documents as substances of high concern, but with reported elevated frequency of detection at high concentrations, are also discussed. The search comprised worldwide publications from 2012, considering at least one of the following criteria: 4 sampling campaigns per year, wet and dry seasons, temporal and/or spatial monitoring of surface (river, estuarine, lake and/or coastal waters) and ground waters. The highest concentrations were found for: (i) the PSs atrazine, alachlor, trifluralin, heptachlor, hexachlorocyclohexane, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate; (ii) the CECs azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, diclofenac, 17α-ethinylestradiol, imidacloprid and 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate; and (iii) other unregulated organic compounds (caffeine, naproxen, metolachlor, estriol, dimethoate, terbuthylazine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, ketoprofen, atenolol, Bisphenol A, metoprolol, carbofuran, malathion, sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine and ofloxacin). Most frequent substances as well as those found at highest concentrations in different seasons and regions, together with available risk assessment data, may be useful to identify possible future PS candidates.

Antibiotics in the coastal water of the South Yellow Sea in China: Occurrence, distribution and ecological risks

The occurrence and distribution of 25 antibiotics from 5 categories in Yancheng coastal area of the South Yellow Sea were investigated using solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Results showed that these antibiotics were widely present in this region with the total concentration up to 1349.2ng/L. Fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides were the most abundant categories contributing 46.5%, and 21.4% to the total antibiotics burden. Trimethoprim was the antibiotic detected in all the samples. The detection rates of erythromycin-H₂O, sulfamethoxazole and florfenicol were 70.0%, 56.7% and 53.4%, respectively. The distribution of antibiotics demonstrated a seaward decreasing trend with the attenuation rate ranging from 0.07 to 0.19km^-1 in this region. Log total antibiotic concentrations was significantly correlated with DOC (dissolved organic carbon) contents, salinity and distance from the coast (p<0.05), which indicated the vital effect of these factors on the transport and fate of antibiotics. Risk assessment revealed that individual antibiotic could mainly pose a low to medium ecological risk, while the risk of antibiotic mixture on aquatic organisms needed further investigation.

Assessment of veterinary drugs in plants using pharmacokinetic approaches: The absorption, distribution and elimination of tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole in ephemeral vegetables

The present study was carried out to demonstrate novel use of pharmacokinetic approaches to characterize drug behaviors/movements in the vegetables with implications to food safety. The absorption, distribution, metabolism and most importantly, the elimination of tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in edible plants Brassica rapa chinensis and Ipomoea aquatica grown hydroponically were demonstrated and studied using non-compartmental pharmacokinetic analysis. The results revealed drug-dependent and vegetable-dependent pharmacokinetic differences and indicated that ephemeral vegetables could have high capacity accumulating antibiotics (up to 160 μg g-1 for TC and 38 μg g-1 for SMX) within hours. TC concentration in the root (Cmax) could reach 11 times higher than that in the cultivation fluid and 3-28 times higher than the petioles/stems. Based on the volume of distribution (Vss), SMX was 3-6 times more extensively distributed than TC. Both antibiotics showed evident, albeit slow elimination phase with elimination half-lives ranging from 22 to 88 hours. For the first time drug elimination through the roots of a plant was demonstrated, and by viewing the root as a central compartment and continuous infusion without a loading dose as drug administration mode, it is possible to pharmacokinetically monitor the movement of antibiotics and their fate in the vegetables with more detailed information not previously available. Phyto-pharmacokinetic could be a new area worth developing new models for the assessment of veterinary drugs in edible plants.

Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics in the Songhua River in China

The occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics in freshwater systems are receiving global attention, because of their impact on the environment and human health. However, few studies have focused on this topic in Northeast China and its Songhua River, the third-largest river in China. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of 12 antibiotics, including three cephalosporins (cefazolin, cefmetazole, cefotaxime), three macrolides (azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin), three fluoroquinolones (ofloxacin, norfloxacin, flumequine), and three sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfapyridine, sulfamethoxazole) in the mainstream and tributaries of the Songhua River. A total of 152 surface water samples were collected in January, May, July, and October 2016. These samples were analyzed using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The results indicated the wide use of all 12 antibiotics in the mainstream of the Songhua River. Sulfamethoxazole and cefazolin were the dominant antibiotics, with maximum concentrations of 73.1 and 65.4 ng L^-1, respectively. Other antibiotics were present at mean concentrations below 15 ng L^-1, except cefmetazole, present at a mean concentration of 35.6 ng L^-1. The spatial distribution of antibiotics showed that unbalanced regional development may lead to the distribution pattern of the antibiotics in the tributaries and the mainstream. Thus study also assessed the seasonal variation of antibiotics in urban surface water; cephalosporin, sulfonamide, fluoroquinolone, and macrolide concentrations were significantly higher during the icebound season than during non-icebound season. This may be due to the low temperature and water flow of the river in winter. Risk assessment showed that azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, flumequine, and sulfamethoxazole posed a low or median risk to the aquatic organisms in the mainstream. The potential risks created by antibiotics to the aquatic environment should not be neglected in the Songhua River. Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of antibiotics in 12 wastewater treatment plants from Dalian, China

In this study, the occurrence and removal efficiencies of 31 antibiotics, including 11 sulfonamides (SAs), five fluoroquinolones (FQs), four macrolides (MLs), four tetracyclines (TCs), three chloramphenicols (CAPs), and four other antibiotics (Others), were investigated in 12 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Dalian, China. A total of 29 antibiotics were detected in wastewater samples with the concentration ranging from 63.6 to 5404.6 ng/L. FQs and SAs were the most abundant antibiotic classes in most wastewater samples, accounting for 42.2 and 23.9% of total antibiotic concentrations, respectively, followed by TCs (16.0%) and MLs (14.8%). Sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin were the most frequently detected antibiotics; of these, the concentration of ofloxacin was the highest in most of influent (average concentration = 609.8 ng/L) and effluent (average concentration = 253.4 ng/L) samples. The removal efficiencies varied among WWTPs in the range of -189.9% (clarithromycin) to 100% (enoxacin, doxycycline, etc), and more than 50% of antibiotics could not be efficiently removed with the removal efficiency less than 65%. An environmental risk assessment was also performed in the WWTP effluents by calculating the risk quotient (RQ), and high RQ values (>1) indicated erythromycin and clarithromycin might cause the ecological risk on organisms in surrounding water near discharge point of WWTPs in this area, which warrants further attention.

Drugs of abuse and their metabolites in the urban rivers of Beijing, China: Occurrence, distribution, and potential environmental risk

The occurrence and distribution of five drugs of abuse and their metabolites, namely, methamphetamine (METH), amphetamine (AMP), ketamine (KET), ephedrine (EPH), and hydroxylimine (HY), were investigated in the surface water in urban rivers in Beijing, China. A total of 117 surface water samples were collected from the seven rivers in the Beijing urban areas during four different seasons. Laboratory analyses revealed that EPH and METH were the most predominant drugs, with detection frequency ranging from 94% to 100% and from 65% to 100%, respectively. High levels of METH and KET were observed in the center part of the urban areas, which was likely associated with the drug abuse and the entertainment activities. Seasonal variation of the drug occurrence showed that the highest concentration of drugs of abuse was found during winter, which was likely due to the high consumption, low temperature, and low water flows during the cold weather. By contrast, the concentration and detection frequency of AMP and HY were relatively low. Risk assessment by the risk quotient method indicated that the five drugs of abuse and their metabolites were not likely to exert biological effects on the aquatic ecosystems at current levels in the surface water. However, the potential adverse effect of drugs of abuse and their metabolites on ecosystem functioning and human health should not be neglected.

Steady-state equation of water vapor sorption for CaCl2-based chemical sorbents and its application

Green CaCl₂-based chemical sorbent has been widely used in sorption refrigeration, air purification and air desiccation. Methods to improve the sorption rate have been extensively investigated, but the corresponding theoretical formulations have not been reported. In this paper, a sorption system of solid-liquid coexistence is established based on the hypothesis of steady-state sorption. The combination of theoretical analysis and experimental results indicates that the system can be described by steady-state sorption process. The steady-state sorption equation, μ = (η − γ_T) , was obtained in consideration of humidity, temperature and the surface area. Based on engineering applications and this equation, two methods including an increase of specific surface area and adjustment of the critical relative humidity (γ) for chemical sorbents, have been proposed to increase the sorption rate. The results indicate that the CaCl₂/CNTs composite with a large specific surface area can be obtained by coating CaCl₂ powder on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The composite reached sorption equilibrium within only 4 h, and the sorption capacity was improved by 75% compared with pure CaCl₂ powder. Furthermore, the addition of NaCl powder to saturated CaCl₂ solution could significantly lower the solution’s γ. The sorption rate was improved by 30% under the same environment.

Simultaneous detection of antibiotics and other drug residues in the dissolved and particulate phases of water by an off-line SPE combined with on-line SPE-LC-MS/MS: Method development and application

Due to their widespread use in human and animal healthcare, antibiotics and other drug residues are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment. Given their potential impacts on ecosystem functioning and public health, the quantification of environmental drug residues has become a necessity. Various analysis techniques have been found to be suitable for reliable detection of such compounds. However, quantification can be difficult because these compounds are present at trace or ultra-trace levels. Consequently, the accuracy of environmental analyses depends on both the efficiency and the robustness of the extraction and quantification method. In this work, an off-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) combined with on-line SPE-LC-MS/MS was applied to the simultaneous extraction and quantification of 26 pharmaceutical products, including 18 antibiotics, dissolved in a water phase. Optimal conditions were determined and then applied to assess the contamination level of the targeted drug residues in water collected from four sites in Northern France: a river, the input and output of an aerated lagoon, and a wastewater treatment plant. Drug residues associated with suspended solid matter (SSM) were also quantified in this work using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) combined with an on-line SPE-LC-MS/MS system in order to complete an assessment of the degree of total background pollution.

Occurrence and risk assessment of antibiotics in river water in Hong Kong

The occurrence and distribution of six typical antibiotics in the main rivers of Hong Kong were investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ES-MS/MS). The results revealed that the antibiotics were widely distributed in the area studied. Of the target antibiotics, ofloxacin was the most frequently detected in the rivers, with a detection rate of 69.6% and a median concentration of 0.7ng/L. Sulfadimidine (n.d-580.4ng/L) and doxycycline (n.d-82.2ng/L), with detection frequencies of 65.2% and 30.4%, respectively, were found at the same level as in rivers in North America, Spain, France, Australia, and in the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers of China, while the other target antibiotics were found at lower levels. According to the ratios of the measured environmental concentration to the predicted no-effect concentration, ofloxacin and doxycycline could present a medium to low ecological risk to algae, while sulfonamides posed no obvious ecological risk to the relevant aquatic organisms (algae, Daphnia magna, and fish). A high detection rate of antibiotics occurred in densely populated areas, revealing that population activities might be greatly contributing to the increasing levels of antibiotics in the area. Thus, the residues of antibiotics present in the waters of Hong Kong need to be closely monitored.
