3-Ethynyltriimidazo[1,2-a:1',2'-c:1″,2″-e][1,3,5]triazine Dual Short- and Long-Lived Emissions with Crystallization-Enhanced Feature: Role of Hydrogen Bonds and π-π Interactions

Organic room temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) materials with stimuli-responsive, multicomponent emissive behaviour are extremely desirable for various applications. The derivative of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with an ethynyl group, TT-CCH, is isolated and investigated. The compound possesses crystallization-enhanced emission (CEE) comprising dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of both molecular and supramolecular origin with aggregation-induced components highly sensitive to grinding. The mechanisms involved in the emissions have been disclosed thanks to combined structural, spectroscopic and computational investigations. In particular, strong CH⋯N hydrogen bonds are deemed responsible, for the first time in the TT family, together with frequently observed π⋯π stacking interactions, for the aggregated fluorescence and phosphorescence.

Design of mechanical-robust phosphorescence materials through covalent click reaction

It remains a great challenge to engineer materials with strong and stable interactions for the simultaneously mechanical-robust and room temperature phosphorescence-efficient materials. In this work, we demonstrate a covalent cross-linking strategy to engineer mechanical-robust room temperature phosphorescence materials through the B-O click reaction between chromophores, polyvinyl alcohol matrix and inorganic layered double hydroxide nanosheets. Through the covalent cross-linkage between the organic polyvinyl alcohol and inorganic layered double hydroxide, a polymeric composite with ultralong lifetime up to 1.45 s is acquired based on the inhibited non-radiative transition of chromophores. Simultaneously, decent mechanical strength of 97.9 MPa can be realized for the composite materials due to the dissipated loading stress through the covalent-bond-accommodated interfacial interaction. These cross-linked composites also exhibit flexibility, processability, scalability and phosphorescence responses towards the mechanical deformation. It is anticipated that the proposed covalent click reaction could provide a platform for the design and modulation of composites with multi-functionality and long-term durability.

Direct observation on argon tagging nitrobenzene radical anion in gas phase: Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and theoretical calculation

The infrared photodissociation spectroscopy was applied to characterize nitrobenzene radical anion (NB^-). NB^- tagged by argon [NB(Ar)^-] was prepared by a mixture of nitrobenzene/Ar through a supersonic ion source and then selected by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Eight strong peaks observed at 977.9, 999.6, 1059.8, 1275.7, 1309.7, 1339.7, 1367.6 and 1581.7 cm^-1 in the fingerprint region were assigned to NB(Ar)^-, corresponding to CC bending, CC stretching, CC bending + symmetric O-N stretching vibration, antisymmetric O-N and CC stretching vibration, antisymmetric O-N stretching and CH rocking vibration, CC stretching + antisymmetric O-N stretching vibration, C-N stretching vibration, and symmetric CC stretching vibration. Most interestingly, the distinguishable CH stretching vibrations were observed at 3006.5, 3048.6 and 3084.5 cm^-1 absorptions. Combined with density functional theoretical (DFT) calculation, five tagging argon NB^- isomers were optimized and analyzed with no imaginary frequency. The results indicated that most bond lengths in NB^- become longer than those of neutral NB, except for the C1-C2/C4-C5 bonds, which are only slightly shorter than those of neutral NB, and the C-N bond, which is 0.085 A shorter in the anion. The NB^- tagged by argon located on the nitro group had no change on bond parameters with Ar-tagging or not theoretically. Natural population analysis (NPA) show that the negative natural charges are mainly distributed on both oxygen atoms. And the one electron resonates between the nitro group and benzene ring. N-O bonds in NB^- become much more polar than those of the neutral NB. This paper proved the usefulness to characterize NB(Ar)^- and further explore the structures of NB_n^- (n > 1) clusters by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy combining with the time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

Recent advances in room temperature phosphorescence materials: design strategies, internal mechanisms and intelligent optical applications

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials comprising organic-inorganic hybrid, pure organic, and polymer RTP materials have been a research focus due to their tunable molecular structures, long emission lifetimes and extensive optical applications. Many design methods including halogen bonding interactions, heavy atom effect, metal-organic frameworks, polymerization, host-guest doping, and H-aggregation have been developed by RTP researchers. Narrowing the energy gap between the S₁ and lowest T_n states, enhancing the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate, increasing the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) value and stabilizing triplet emission states are the core factors to promoting RTP performance. In this review, lots of cases of organic-inorganic hybrid, pure organic, and polymer RTP materials with advanced design strategies, excellent RTP properties and intelligent applications have been classified and sorted. Their molecule structural designability and stimulus responsiveness endow them with RTP adjustability, which makes them excellent phosphors for modern optical applications. This review provides a systematic case elaboration of typical RTP systems in recent years and identifies the future challenges to improving RTP performance and finding novel applications.

Crystallization-Enhanced Emission and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Cyclic Triimidazole-Monohexyl Thiophene Derivatives

The development of organic room-temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) materials represents an active field of research due to their significant advantages with respect to their organometallic counterparts. Two cyclic triimidazole (TT) derivatives bearing one and three hexyl-thiophene moieties, TT-HThio and TT-(HThio)₃, have been prepared and characterized. Both compounds display enhanced quantum yields in their crystalline form with respect to those in a solution state, revealing crystallization-enhanced emissive (CEE) behavior. Importantly, while single fluorescence is observed in solution, crystalline powders also feature dual ORTP, whose respective molecular and aggregate origins have been disclosed through X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT/TDDFT calculations. The relation between the photophysical properties of TT-HThio and its crystallinity degree has been confirmed by a decrease in photoluminescent quantum yield (Φ) and loss of vibronic resolution when its crystals are ground in a mortar, revealing mechanochromic behavior and confirming CEE features.

Molecular Organization in Exponentially Growing Multilayer Thin Films Assembled with Polyelectrolytes and Clay

Multilayer thin film assembly by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique offers an inexpensive and versatile route for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials. In the case of polymer-clay systems, however, the technique faces the challenges of low clay loading and lack of tunability of the film characteristics. This is addressed in the present work that achieves exponential growth in clay-containing polyelectrolyte films having high clay loading and tailored properties. Our approach involves the incorporation of a weak polyelectrolyte and a clay with relatively high charge density and small particle size. The system of investigation comprises poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as the polycation and laponite clay and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as polyanions that are used alternately to create multilayers. Successful high clay loading and exponential growth were achieved by two different approaches of polyanion incorporation in the multilayers. A progressive increase in the degree of ionization of PAA was shown to contribute to the exponential growth. Our findings also include novel pathways to manipulate thickness, surface topography, and clay content. The strategy presented here can lead to novel approaches to fabricate tailor-made nanomaterials for distinct applications.

Fabrication of a nanocomposite film decorated with highly dispersive nanoparticles by following an interface-induced strategy

A polymer nanocomposite film decorated with highly dispersive nanoparticles was prepared by a liquid-liquid interface induced self-assembly method based on a breath figure process. The distribution as well as the orientation preference of the Janus particles within the polymer matrix could be dynamically controlled by adjusting the environmental conditions. Antibacterial and photocatalytic functionality was obtained for the nanocomposite films decorated with silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, respectively.

Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds

This paper provides an overview of recent developments in the field of volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors, which are finding uses in healthcare, safety, environmental monitoring, food and agriculture, oil industry, and other fields. It starts by briefly explaining the basics of VOC sensing and reviewing the currently available and quickly progressing VOC sensing approaches. It then discusses the main trends in materials' design with special attention to nanostructuring and nanohybridization. Emerging sensing materials and strategies are highlighted and their involvement in the different types of sensing technologies is discussed, including optical, electrical, and gravimetric sensors. The review also provides detailed discussions about the main limitations of the field and offers potential solutions. The status of the field and suggestions of promising directions for future development are summarized.

Room temperature tunable multicolor phosphorescent polymers for humidity detection and information encryption

Amorphous polymer-based room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials exhibiting tunable emission colors have received tremendous attention and are extremely challenging to prepare. Herein, polyacrylamide-based RTP materials with tunable multicolor emission were prepared via copolymerizing phosphor with concentration dependent luminescence colors and acrylamide with different molar ratios. The hydrogen bonding interactions and chemically crosslinked structures in these polymers effectively restrict the mobility of phosphors and activate efficient RTP emission. The molar ratio of phosphor and acrylamide has a significant influence on the photophysical properties of these polymers, which can be used to fabricate multicolor materials. In addition, the RTP intensity decreases with increasing humidity due to the disassociation of hydrogen bonding by adsorption of water, manifesting as a humidity sensor. Benefiting from the distinguishable RTP lifetimes and the responsiveness to humidity, triple encoding for information encryption is successfully realized.

Tunable Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties from Room Temperature Phosphorescent Cyclic Triimidazole-Pyrene Bio-Probe

Organic materials with multiple emissions tunable by external stimuli represent a great challenge. TTPyr, crystallizing in different polymorphs, shows a very rich photophyisics comprising excitation-dependent fluorescence and phosphorescence at ambient conditions, and mechanochromic and thermochromic behavior. Transformation among the different species has been followed by thermal and X-ray diffraction analyses and the emissive features interpreted through structural results and DFT/TDDFT calculations. Particularly intriguing is the polymorph TTPyr(HT), serendipitously obtained at high temperature but stable also at room temperature, whose non-centrosymmetric structure guarantees an SHG efficiency 10 times higher than that of standard urea. Its crystal packing, where only the TT units are strongly rigidified by π-π stacking interactions while the Pyr moieties possess partial conformational freedom, is responsible for the observed dual fluorescence. The potentialities of TTPyr for bioimaging have been successfully established.

Polyacrylamide-Based Binary Luminescent Copolymer Materials Exhibit Color-Tunable and Efficient Long-Lived Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Polymer-based pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have garnered considerable interest, among which RTP systems with prolonged lifetimes and tunable emission colors are promising for applications in sensing, flexible electronics, bioassay, anti-counterfeiting, and data encryption. Herein, facile doping method is reported based on two types of copolymers with benzene/biphenyl-based light-emitting cores as their side chains, whereby the two copolymers are robustly crosslinked via noncovalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding that occur between the light-emitting cores and polyacrylamide backbones. Persistent RTP emission with prolonged lifetime up to 1.9 s and phosphorescence quantum yield as high as 40.1% are obtained in single copolymers, attributed to the conformation restriction of phosphorescent dyes originating from the rigid microenvironment. Furthermore, multicolor phosphorescence signals are observed in the doped binary luminescent copolymer systems that can be effectively regulated by the feed ratio of luminescent cores and irradiation wavelengths. Possible mechanisms for this efficient and long-lived color-tunable RTP system are discussed on the basis of the experimental data and theoretical calculations. In addition, it is also demonstrated that the color-tunable RTP emission of the doped copolymer systems under ambient conditions allows for further exploitation in the application of dynamic information encryption.

Light-Controlled Friction by Carboxylic Azobenzene Molecular Self-Assembly Layers

Nowadays, reversible friction regulation has become the focus of scientists in terms of the flexible regulatory structure of photosensitive materials and theories since this facilitates rapid development in this field. Meanwhile, as an external stimulus, light possesses great potential and advantages in spatiotemporal control and remote triggering. In this work, we demonstrated two photo-isomerized organic molecular layers, tetra-carboxylic azobenzene (NN4A) and dicarboxylic azobenzene (NN2A), which were selected to construct template networks on the surface of the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to study the friction properties, corresponding to the arrangement structure of self-assembled layers under light regulation. First of all, the morphology of the self-assembled layers were characterized by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), then the nanotribological properties of the template networks were measured by atomic force microscope (AFM). Their friction coefficients are respectively changed by about 0.6 and 2.3 times under light control. The density functional theory (DFT) method was used to calculate the relationship between the force intensity and the friction characteristics of the self-assembled systems under light regulation. Herein, the use of external light stimulus plays a significant role in regulating the friction properties of the interface of the nanometer, hopefully serving as a fundamental basis for further light-controlling research for the future fabrication of advanced on-surface devices.

Response of a Zn(II)-based metal-organic coordination polymer towards trivalent metal ions (Al3+, Fe3+ and Cr3+) probed by spectroscopic methods

A new zinc-based two-dimensional coordination polymer, [Zn(5-AIP)(Ald-4)]·H2O (5-AIP = 5-amino isophthalate, Ald-4 = aldrithiol-4), 1, has been synthesized at room temperature by the layer diffusion technique. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 showed a two-dimensional bilayer structure. An aqueous suspension of 1 upon excitation at 300 nm displayed an intense blue emission at 403 nm. The luminescence spectra were interestingly responsive and selective to Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions even in the presence of other interfering ions. The calculated detection limits for Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ were 0.35 μM ([triple bond, length as m-dash]8.43 ppb), 0.46 μM ([triple bond, length as m-dash]22.6 ppb) and 0.30 μM ([triple bond, length as m-dash]15.85 ppb), respectively. Notably, with the cumulative addition of Al3+ ions, the luminescence intensity at 403 nm decreased steadily with a gradual red shift up to 427 nm. Afterward, this red shifted peak showed a turn-on effect upon further addition of Al3+ ions. On the other hand, for Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions, there was only drastic luminescence quenching and a large red shift up to 434 nm. This indicated the formation of a complex between 1 and these metal ions, which was also supported by the UV-Visible absorption spectra of 1 that showed the appearance of a new band at 280 nm in the presence of these three metal ions. The FTIR spectra revealed that these ions interacted with the carboxylate oxygen atom of 5-AIP and the nitrogen atom of the Ald-4 ligand in the structure. The luminescence lifetime decay analysis manifested that a charge-transfer type complex was formed between 1 and Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions that resulted in huge luminescence quenching due to the efficient charge transfer involving the vacant d-orbitals, whereas for Al3+ ions having no vacant d-orbital, turn-on of luminescence occurred because of the increased rigidity of 1 upon complexation.

Four new Cu6S6 cluster-based coordination compounds: synthesis, crystal structures and fluorescence properties

A hexagonal prismatic Cu₆S₆ cluster exhibits excellent near-infrared fluorescence properties due to its short Cu-Cu bonds, however, the construction of Cu₆S₆ cluster-based compounds with extended structures is still a challenge. Here, four new Cu₆S₆ cluster-based coordination compounds, formulated as Cu₃(pymt)₃ (1), {(CuCN)₂[Cu₃(mpymt)₃]}_n (2), {(CuSCN)[Cu₃(mpymt)₃]}_n (3) and {(CuCN)₂[Cu₃(dmpymt)₃]·CH₃CN}_n (4) (Hpymt = pyrimidine-2-thiolate, Hmpymt = 4-methyl-pyrimidine-2-thione and Hdmpymt = 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine-2-thione), have been synthesized through the reactions of mercaptopyrimidine derivatives and CuCN or CuSCN under solvo-thermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 is a zero-dimensional Cu₆(pymt)₆ molecule containing a distorted pseudo-hexagonal prismatic Cu₆S₆ core. Compounds 2 and 4 with isomorphic frameworks but different organic linkers show a rare three-dimensional framework with nor topology constructed from Cu₆(mpymt)₆ units and one-dimensional chiral [Cu(CN)]_n chains; compared with compound 2, a more hydrophobic one-dimensional channel in compound 4 is observed due to the increase of the methyl groups on the pyrimidine ligand, in which acetonitrile molecules are filled in the channels of compound 4. Compound 3 shows a rare two-dimensional layer constructed from Cu₆(mpymt)₆ units and one-dimensional puckered (CuSCN)_n chains. For the first time, Cu₆S₆ clusters are connected to one-dimensional inorganic CuCN (or CuSCN) chains through mercaptopyrimidine derivatives to obtain extended arrays in compounds 2-4. The crystals of compounds 1-4 in the solid state all show apparent red light emission. Compound 4 shows sensitive luminescence quenching response to nitrobenzene (NB), and the corresponding quenching constant (K_sv) and detection limit are 2.06 × 10³ M^-1 and 9.27 ppm, respectively. This study provides a new strategy to construct Cu₆S₆ cluster-based coordination polymers that have great potential in various applications such as luminescence sensing.

Recent advances in persistent luminescence based on molecular hybrid materials

Molecular persistently luminescent materials have received recent attention due to their promising applications in optical displays, biological imaging, chemical sensing, and security systems. In this review, we systematically summarize recent advances in establishing persistently luminescent materials-specifically focusing on materials composed of molecular hybrids for the first time. We describe the main strategies for synthesizing these hybrid materials, namely: (i) inorganics/organics, (ii) organics/organics, and (iii) organics/polymer systems and demonstrate how molecular hybrids provide synergistic effects, while improving luminescence lifetimes and efficiencies. These hybrid materials promote new methods for tuning key physical properties such as singlet-triplet excited state energies by controlling the chemical interactions and molecular orientations in the solid state. We review new advances in these materials from the perspective of examining experimental and theoretical approaches to room-temperature phosphorescence and thermally-activated delayed fluorescence. Finally, this review concludes by summarizing the current challenges and future opportunities for these hybrid materials.

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of slow release phenobarbital in the control of convulsions triggered by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), verifying the time of permanence in the anticonvulsant effect through behavior and electroencephalographic records. A total of 162 male Wistar rats weighing between 100 and 120 g were divided into two groups, one for behavior analysis (n = 90) and biochemistry, and another for the acquisition of electrocorticographic record (n = 72). Hepatic enzymes were measured by obtaining a blood sample from the animals studied by means of a biochemical analysis. The procedures for electrode implant and electrocorticographic recordings were performed. The intercalation of phenobarbital in layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocarrier allowed us to evaluate a new slow release pharmaceutical formulation based on methodologies that have proven longer residence time and lower side effects. This study demonstrates that phenobarbital can be a new perspective pharmaceutical formulation.

Unravelling the intricate photophysical behavior of 3-(pyridin-2-yl)triimidazotriazine AIE and RTP polymorphs

The development of purely organic materials showing multicolor fluorescent and phosphorescent behaviour represents a formidable challenge in view of practical applications. Herein the rich photophysical behaviour of 3-(pyridin-2-yl)triimidazotriazine (TT-Py) organic molecule, comprising excitation-dependent fluorescence and phosphorescence under ambient conditions in both blended films and the crystalline phase, is investigated by means of steady state, time resolved and ultrafast spectroscopies and interpreted on the basis of X-ray diffraction studies and DFT/TDDFT calculations. In particular, by proper excitation wavelength, dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of molecular origin can be observed together with low energy phosphorescences resulting from aggregate species. It is demonstrated that the multiple emission properties originate from the copresence, in the investigated system, of an extended polycyclic nitrogen-rich moiety (TT), strongly rigidified by π-π stacking interactions and short C-H···N hydrogen bonds, and a fragment (Py) having partial conformational freedom.

Reprogrammable fluorescence logic sensing for biomolecules via RNA-like coenzyme A-based coordination polymer

In this study, coenzyme A (CoA)-based coordination polymers (CPs) have been generated in situ by exploiting the reaction of thiols with metal ion (Au(III) or Ag(I)), which are dependent on both thiol-metal and aurophilic metal∙metal interaction. It is interesting to note that CPs-related biosensing capabilities toward some biomolecules including ascorbic acid (AA), cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH) are also investigated via SYBR Green II (SGII)-derived fluorescence switchable mechanisms. The synthesized CPs display especial RNA-like structure and are capable of initiating the fluorescence of SGII. Conversely, AA, Cys or GSH can give rise to the structural destruction of RNA-like CPs, thus inhibiting the fluorescence signal, and quantitative detection of these biomolecules are achieved favorably with a detection limit of 7.2, 0.55 and 0.48 nM, respectively. Meanwhile, the fascinating fluorescence on-off property and simple synthetic process are employed to build a series of basic logic gates (YES, NOT, OR, AND, INHIBIT and NOR) and multiple configurable logic gates (OR-AND and OR-OR-INHIBIT) along with different logic inputs. In view of these, developing CoA-based CPs as a new material to execute logic operations provides a valuable platform to establish the next generation of advanced molecular devices for clinic diagnostic and biomedical research.

Color-Tunable Polymeric Long-Persistent Luminescence Based on Polyphosphazenes

Organic long-persistent luminescence (OLPL) materials have attracted wide attention on account of their fascinating luminescence properties, presenting application prospects in the fields of bioimaging, information security, displays, anti-counterfeiting, and so on. Some effective strategies have been developed to promote the intersystem crossing (ISC) of the excited singlet state to triplet state and limit nonradiative transition, and thus OLPL materials with long lifetime (more than 1s) and high quantum yield have been explored. However, OLPL materials with dynamic and excitation-dependent characteristics are rarely reported. In this work, two novel polyphosphazene derivatives containing carbazolyl units are designed and synthesized successfully, and then they are doped into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films to achieve polymeric long-persistent luminescence (PLPL). Unexpectedly, excitation-dependent PLPL (ED-PLPL) is obtained under ambient conditions (in air at room temperature), and the persistent luminescence color can be changed from blue to green upon varying the excitation wavelength. At the same time, a dynamic cycle of ED-PLPL is realized based on the formation and destruction of hydrogen bonding interactions between the PVA chains and polyphosphazene phosphor. This work provides a new strategy for the design of color-tunable polymeric luminescent materials under ambient conditions.

Highly Efficient Organic Afterglow from a 2D Layered Lead-Free Metal Halide in Both Crystals and Thin Films under an Air Atmosphere

Organic afterglow materials (OAMs) with a lifetime longer than 0.1 s have recently received much attention for their fascinating properties meeting the critical requirements of applications in newly emerged technologies. However, the development of OAMs lags behind for their low luminescence efficiency. Usually, enhancing the phosphorescence efficiency of organic materials causes a short lifetime. Here, we report two kinds of OAMs, two-dimensional (2D) layered organic-inorganic hybrid zinc bromides (PEZB-NTA and PEZB-BPA), obtained in an environmentally friendly ethanol solvent by a low-temperature solution method. They display highly efficient and persistent luminescence in air in both crystals and thin films with phosphorescence quantum yields up to 42% in crystals and 27% in films. For OAMs, the two quantum yields are the highest values ever reported for crystals and films. Due to the excellent crystalline and film-forming ability, PEZB-NTA and PEZB-BPA in ethanol can be used as inks to construct patterns on various rigid and flexible substrates, including paper, iron, plastic, marble, tin foil, and cloth. Consequently, the novel OAMs show great application prospects in the fields of anti-counterfeiting and information storage because of their economic synthesis, solution processing, and easy operation.

1,3,5-Trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene: A neglected NIR phosphor with prolonged lifetime by σ-hole and π-hole capture

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have become a hot topic in fields of organic light-emitting dioes, biological sensing and imaging. The present work reports firstly that 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (TITFB) can act as a simple pure organic NIR phosphor due to its novel function in promoting n-π∗ transition. Also, TITFB crystal has longer phosphorescence lifetime than other ordinary multiiodoluminophors and TITFB powder. Based on the TITFB crystal structure, σ-hole and π-hole capture mechanism of n-electron is proposed, i.e., the excited state energy is decreased and n-electrons are stabilized to cause slower radiative decay rate due to the restriction of σ-hole and π-hole bond. Both computational and experimental studies support the mechanism. The new electron-capture mode is more conducive to understanding pure organic ultralong lifetime RTP.

Carbon Dots-in-Matrix Boosting Intriguing Luminescence Properties and Applications

As a new class of luminescent nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have aroused significant interest because of their fascinating photoluminescence properties and potential applications in biological, optoelectronic, and energy-related fields. Strikingly, embedding CDs in host matrices endow them with intriguing luminescent properties, in particular, room temperature phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, due to the confinement effect of the host matrix and the H-bonding interactions between CDs and the matrix. Here, the state-of-the-art strategies for introducing CDs in various host matrices are summarized, such as nanoporous materials, polyvinyl alcohol, polyurethane, potash alum, layered double hydroxides, amorphous silica, etc. The resultant luminescent properties of the composites and their emission mechanisms are discussed. Their applications in bioimaging, drug delivery/release, sensing, and anticounterfeiting are also presented. Finally, current problems and challenges of CDs-based composites are noted for future development of such luminescent materials.

One-step synthesis and growth mechanism of nitrate intercalated ZnAl LDH conversion coatings on zinc

An approach for the synthesis of ZnAl-NO3 LDH conversion coatings on zinc in an aqueous acidic Al(NO3)3/NaNO3 solution is demonstrated for the first time. The growth mechanism has been investigated using time resolved structural, microstructural and analytical methods. A LDH growth model involving both electrochemical and chemical processes is suggested.

Bisimidazole-based phosphorescent thiocyanatocadmates

Simple room-temperature self-assemblies between Cd2+ salts, SCN- and bisimidazole molecules at pH = 2 created three new organically templated thiocyanatocadmates [H2(L1)][Cd(SCN)4]·H2O (L1 = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene) 1, [H2(L2)][Cd(SCN)4] (L2 = 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)propane) 2, and [H2(L3)][Cd2(SCN)6] (L3 = 1,4-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane) 3. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that (i) in 1-3, the SCN- groups doubly bridge the Cd2+ centers to form different thiocyanatocadmates: a linear chain in 1; a zigzag chain in 2; and a 2-D layer network (63 net) in 3; and (ii) in 1, via Nbase-HNSCN interactions, the L1 molecules extend the thiocyanatocadmate chains into a 2-D supramolecular layer, whereas in 2, the zigzag thiocyanatocadmate chains self-assemble into a 3-D supramolecular network via weak SS interactions. Photoluminescence analysis indicates that the three title compounds all emit light: blue light for 1 and 2 and green light for 3. At low temperatures, the emission positions of the three compounds hardly change, but the emission intensities are largely enhanced. Interestingly, after turning off the UV lamp, 1 and 2 still briefly emit light (ca. 2 s), which means that 1 and 2 possess phosphorescence properties. Phosphorescence lifetimes at 77 K are 1619 ms for 1 and 247 ms for 2.

Efficient and Long-Lived Room-Temperature Organic Phosphorescence: Theoretical Descriptors for Molecular Designs

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with long afterglow from pure organic materials has attracted great attention for its potential applications in biological imaging, digital encryption, optoelectronic devices, and so on. Organic materials have been long considered to be nonphosphorescent owing to their weak molecular spin-orbit coupling and high sensitivity to temperature. However, recently, some purely organic compounds have demonstrated highly efficient RTP with long afterglow upon aggregation, while others fail. Namely, it remains a challenge to expound on the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we present the molecular descriptors to characterize the phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime. For a prototypical RTP system consisting of a carbonyl group and π-conjugated segments, the excited states can be regarded as an admixture of n → π* (with portion α) and π → π* (portion β). Starting from the phosphorescent process and El-Sayed rule, we deduced that (i) the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate of S₁ → T _n is mostly governed by the modification of the product of α and β and (ii) the ISC rate of T₁ → S₀ is determined by the β value of T₁. Thus, the descriptors (γ = α × β, β) can be employed to describe the RTP character of organic molecules. From hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations, we illustrated the relationships among the descriptors (γ, β), phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime, and spin-orbit coupling constants. We stressed that the large γ and β values are favorable for the strong and long-lived RTP in organic materials. Experiments have reported confirmations of these molecular design rules.

Reversible Ultralong Organic Phosphorescence for Visual and Selective Chloroform Detection

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widespread in our daily life and greatly harmful to human health, as well as to the environment. To date, it remains a formidable challenge to develop a highly sensitive visual system for selective detection of VOCs. Herein, we report on a metal-free organic molecule of 2,4-di(10 H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TDP) with ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) feature as a visible chemical probe for chloroform detection. In the pristine solid state, this phosphor shows a green UOP with a lifetime of 56 ms after the removal of excitation light source; however, the UOP greatly diminishes when fumed with chloroform, which is ascribed to the variation in both radiative and nonradiative transitions in crystal with embedded chloroform. Remarkably, TDP materials demonstrate great potential as a visual chemical probe for chloroform, showing high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and good repeatability. The limitation for chloroform detection is as low as 5 ppm. Combining experimental data and theoretical calculations, it is reasoned that the space confinement via intermolecular interactions between chloroform and TDP molecules play a vital role for high selectivity of chloroform detection. These results pave the way toward expanding the scope of organic luminogens with UOP as well as their applications.

Fluorescence of Nonaromatic Organic Systems and Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Organic Luminogens: The Intrinsic Principle and Recent Progress

Following the development of photoluminescence systems with various compositions, some nontraditional structures, including nonaromatic organic systems as fluorophores and organic luminogens as the source of phosphorescence emission at room temperature, have attracted considerable attention for their advantages in biological and medical applications, and for the updated photophysical understandings in science. In this Review, the recent progress in understanding these organic compounds or polymers for fluorescence and phosphorescence is briefly summarized, with the aim of exploring the intrinsic principle of these novel photoluminescence systems and providing reasonable constructs for molecular design. Finally, some prospects are suggested for further development of this continually expanding area of research, with the coined concept of Molecular Uniting Set Identified Characteristic (MUSIC).

Nano-photosensitizer based on layered double hydroxide and isophthalic acid for singlet oxygenation and photodynamic therapy

Singlet oxygen has won a great deal of attention to catalysis and biological studies due to its strong oxidizing properties. However, the photosensitizers which require for the generation of singlet oxygen remain inadequate because of their lack of long-wavelength absorption, weak hydrophilicity, and poor biocompatibility. Here, we develop near-infrared laser activated supramolecular photosensitizers (isophthalic acid/layered double hydroxide nanohybrids) for efficient two-photon photodynamic therapy. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of nanohybrid is up to 0.74. Critically, in vitro tests verify the superior anti-cancer properties of nanohybrid with an IC50 determine to be 0.153 μg mL-1. The nanohybrids take advantage of the superior tissue penetration of 808 nm laser irradiation and exhibit a dramatically strong ability to ablate tumors in vivo, with extremely low toxicity. This work provides the proof of concept that ultralong-lived triplet excitons can function as two-photon-activated photosensitizers for an effective singlet oxygen generation.

Optical Humidity Sensing Using Transparent Hybrid Film Composed of Cationic Magnesium Porphyrin and Clay Mineral

A transparent hybrid film composed of cationic magnesium porphyrin and clay mineral was developed, and its chromic behavior depending on relative humidity (RH) was investigated. The hybrid film was obtained via intercalation of magnesium porphyrin into clay film; magnesium porphyrin was intercalated into the interlayer spaces of the clay mineral without aggregation. The absorption spectra of the hybrid film showed red shifts compared to the aqueous solution of magnesium porphyrin because of the π-conjugated system extension with coplanarization of the meso-substituted pyridinium group and porphyrin ring. The absorption maximum of the hybrid film was gradually shifted to a shorter wavelength, and the color of the hybrid film was changed with increasing RH. The X-ray diffraction measurement suggested that the basal space of clay was expanded with increasing RH, indicating that the interlayer space of clay was expanded by water adsorption, and the spectral shift was induced by the change in coplanarization degree between the porphyrin ring and meso-substituted pyridinium groups.
