Surface functionalisation of polymers

Lipases for targeted industrial applications, focusing on the development of biotechnologically significant aspects: A comprehensive review of recent trends in protein engineering

Lipases are remarkable biocatalysts, adept at catalyzing the breakdown of diverse compounds into glycerol, fatty acids, and mono- and di-glycerides via hydrolysis. Beyond this, they facilitate esterification, transesterification, alcoholysis, acidolysis, and more, making them versatile in industrial applications. In industrial processes, lipases that exhibit high stability are favored as they can withstand harsh conditions. However, most native lipases are unable to endure adverse conditions, making them unsuitable for industrial use. Protein engineering proves to be a potent technology in the development of lipases that can function effectively under challenging conditions and fulfill criteria for various industrial processes. This review concentrated on new trends in protein engineering to enhance the diversity of lipase genes and employed in silico methods for predicting and comprehensively analyzing target mutations in lipases. Additionally, key molecular factors associated with industrial characteristics of lipases, including thermostability, solvent tolerance, catalytic activity, and substrate preference have been elucidated. The present review delved into how industrial traits can be enhanced through directed evolution (epPCR, gene shuffling), rational design (FRESCO, ASR), combined engineering strategies (i.e. CAST, ISM, and FRISM) as protein engineering methodologies in contexts of biodiesel production, food processing, and applications of detergent, pharmaceutics, and plastic degradation.

Adhesion Properties and Stability of Polar Polymers Treated by Air Atmospheric Pressure Plasma

This study continues the discussion on the surface modification of polymers using an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) reactor in air. These results complement prior research focusing on nonpolar polymers. Polymers, such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyetheretherketone, and polymethyl methacrylate, containing structurally bonded oxygen are studied, representing a range of properties such as oxygen content, crystalline/amorphous structure, polarity, functionality, and aliphatic/aromatic structure. APP induces superior wetting properties on the hydrophilic polymer surfaces with rapid and uniform modification within 0.5 s of exposure. The amorphous structures undergo additional modification for longer exposure. Moreover, the aliphatic chain structures require longer plasma exposure to reach surface modification equilibrium. The polar polymers reach a limit level of modification corresponding to a minimum water contact angle of about 50°. The surface polarity increases on average by a factor of approximately two. The equilibrium values of the adhesion work attained after post-processing recovery fall within a limited range of about 100-120 mJ/m2. The enhancement of surface functionality through the creation of oxidized groups primarily depends on the initial oxygen content and reaches a limit of about 40 at.% oxygen. The surface properties of the treated polar surfaces exhibit good stability, comparable to that of the previously tested nonpolar polymers.

An overview of electrochemical biosensors used for COVID-19 detection

This short review presents the latest advances in the field of electrochemical biosensors, focusing particularly on impedimetric biosensors for the direct measurement of analytes. As a source of study we have chosen to describe these advances in the latest global health crisis originated from the COVID-19 pandemic, initiated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In this period, the necessity for swift and precise detection methods has grown rapidly due to an imminent need for the development of an analytical method to identify and isolate infected patients as an attempt to control the spreading of the disease. Traditional approaches such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), were extensively used during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, but their drawbacks, including slow response time, became evident. In this context, the potential of electrochemical biosensors as an alternative for COVID-19 detection was emphasized. These biosensors merge electrochemical technology with bioreceptors, offering benefits such as rapidity, accuracy, portability, and real-time result provision. Additionally, we present instances of electrochemical biosensors modified with conductive polymers, eliminating the necessity for an electrochemical probe. The adaptability of the developed materials and devices facilitated the prompt production of electrochemical biosensors during the pandemic, creating opportunities for broader applications in infectious disease diagnosis.

Effects of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet on 3D-Printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

Polymers are essential in several sectors, yet some applications necessitate surface modification. One practical and eco-friendly option is non-thermal plasma exposure. The present research endeavors to examine the impacts of dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric pressure plasma on the chemical composition and wettability properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene surfaces subject to the action of additive manufacturing. The plasma source was produced by igniting either helium or argon and then adjusted to maximize the operational conditions for exposing polymers. The drop in contact angle and the improvement in wettability after plasma exposure can be due to the increased oxygen-containing groups onto the surface, together with a reduction in carbon content. The research findings indicated that plasma treatment significantly improved the wettability of the polymer surface, with an increase of up to 60% for both working gases, while the polar index increased from 0.01 up to 0.99 after plasma treatment. XPS measurements showed an increase of up to 10% in oxygen groups at the surface of He-plasma-treated samples and up to 13% after Ar-plasma treatment. Significant modifications were observed in the structure that led to a reduction of its roughness by 50% and also caused a leveling effect after plasma treatment. A slight decrease in the glass and melting temperature after plasma treatment was pointed out by differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Up to a 15% crystallinity index was determined after plasma treatment, and the 3D printing process was measured through X-ray diffraction. The empirical findings encourage the implementation of atmospheric pressure plasma-based techniques for the environmentally sustainable manipulation of polymers for applications necessitating higher levels of adhesion and specific prerequisites.

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Exposure of Polylactic Acid Surfaces for Better Adhesion: Plasma Parameters towards Polymer Properties

Polymers play a crucial role in multiple industries; however, surface modification is necessary for certain applications. Exposure to non-thermal plasma provides a viable and environmentally beneficial option. Fused deposition molding utilizes biodegradable polylactic acid, although it encounters constraints in biomedical applications as a result of inadequate mechanical characteristics. This study investigates the effects of atmospheric pressure plasma generated by a dielectric barrier discharge system using helium and/or argon on the modification of polylactic acid surfaces, changes in their wettability properties, and alterations in their chemical composition. The plasma source was ignited in either He or Ar and was tailored to fit the best operational conditions for polymer exposure. The results demonstrated the enhanced wettability of the polymer surface following plasma treatment (up to 40% in He and 20% in Ar), with a marginal variation observed among treatments utilizing different gases. The plasma treatments also caused changes in the surface topography, morphology, roughness, and hydrophilicity. Plasma exposure also resulted in observable modifications in the dielectric characteristics, phase transition, and structure. The experimental findings endorse the utilization of plasma technologies at normal air pressure for environmentally friendly processing of polymer materials, specifically for applications that necessitate enhanced adhesion and have carefully selected prerequisites.

Tuning the Functionality of Self-Assembled 2D Platelets in the Third Dimension

The decoration of 2D nanostructures using heteroepitaxial growth is of great importance to achieve functional assemblies employed in biomedical, electrical, and mechanical applications. Although the functionalization of polymers before self-assembly has been investigated, the exploration of direct surface modification in the third dimension from 2D nanostructures has, to date, been unexplored. Here, we used living crystallization-driven self-assembly to fabricate poly(ε-caprolactone)-based 2D platelets with controlled size. Importantly, surface modification of the platelets in the third dimension was achieved by using functional monomers and light-induced polymerization. This method allows us to selectively regulate the height and fluorescence properties of the nanostructures. Using this approach, we gained unprecedented spatial control over the surface functionality in the specific region of complex 2D platelets.

Adhesion Properties and Stability of Non-Polar Polymers Treated by Air Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma

Atmospheric-pressure plasma (APP) has advantages for enhancing the adhesion of polymers and has to provide uniform, efficient treatment, which also limits the recovery effect of treated surfaces. This study investigates the effects of APP treatment on polymers that have no oxygen bonded in their structure and varying crystallinity, aiming to assess the maximum level of modification and the post-treatment stability of non-polar polymers based on their initial structure parameters, including the crystalline-amorphous structure. An APP reactor simulating continuous processing operating in air is employed, and the polymers are analyzed using contact angle measurement, XPS, AFM, and XRD. APP treatment significantly enhances the hydrophilic character of the polymers, with semicrystalline polymers exhibiting adhesion work values of approximately 105 mJ/m² and 110 mJ/m² for 0.5 s and 1.0 s exposure, respectively, while amorphous polymers reach approximately 128 mJ/m². The maximum average oxygen uptake is around 30%. Short treatment times induce the roughening of the semicrystalline polymer surfaces, while the amorphous polymer surfaces become smoother. The polymers exhibit a limit to their modification level, with 0.5 s exposure being optimal for significant surface property changes. The treated surfaces remain remarkably stable, with the contact angle only reverting by a few degrees toward that of the untreated state.

Can Superhydrophobic PET Surfaces Prevent Bacterial Adhesion?

Prevention of bacterial adhesion is a way to reduce and/or avoid biofilm formation, thus restraining its associated infections. The development of repellent anti-adhesive surfaces, such as superhydrophobic surfaces, can be a strategy to avoid bacterial adhesion. In this study, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was modified by in situ growth of silica nanoparticles (NPs) to create a rough surface. The surface was further modified with fluorinated carbon chains to increase its hydrophobicity. The modified PET surfaces presented a pronounced superhydrophobic character, showing a water contact angle of 156° and a roughness of 104 nm (a considerable increase comparing with the 69° and 4.8 nm obtained for the untreated PET). Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to evaluate the modified surfaces morphology, further confirming its successful modification with nanoparticles. Additionally, a bacterial adhesion assay using an Escherichia coli expressing YadA, an adhesive protein from Yersinia so-called Yersinia adhesin A, was used to assess the anti-adhesive potential of the modified PET. Contrarily to what was expected, adhesion of E. coli YadA was found to increase on the modified PET surfaces, exhibiting a clear preference for the crevices. This study highlights the role of material micro topography as an important attribute when considering bacterial adhesion.

Polymeric Materials, Advances and Applications in Tissue Engineering: A Review

Tissue Engineering (TE) is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses materials science in combination with biological and engineering sciences. In recent years, an increase in the demand for therapeutic strategies for improving quality of life has necessitated innovative approaches to designing intelligent biomaterials aimed at the regeneration of tissues and organs. Polymeric porous scaffolds play a critical role in TE strategies for providing a favorable environment for tissue restoration and establishing the interaction of the biomaterial with cells and inducing substances. This article reviewed the various polymeric scaffold materials and their production techniques, as well as the basic elements and principles of TE. Several interesting strategies in eight main TE application areas of epithelial, bone, uterine, vascular, nerve, cartilaginous, cardiac, and urinary tissue were included with the aim of learning about current approaches in TE. Different polymer-based medical devices approved for use in clinical trials and a wide variety of polymeric biomaterials are currently available as commercial products. However, there still are obstacles that limit the clinical translation of TE implants for use wide in humans, and much research work is still needed in the field of regenerative medicine.

Dual color pH probes made from silica and polystyrene nanoparticles and their performance in cell studies

Ratiometric green-red fluorescent nanosensors for fluorometrically monitoring pH in the acidic range were designed from 80 nm-sized polystyrene (PS) and silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs), red emissive reference dyes, and a green emissive naphthalimide pH probe, analytically and spectroscopically characterized, and compared regarding their sensing performance in aqueous dispersion and in cellular uptake studies. Preparation of these optical probes, which are excitable by 405 nm laser or LED light sources, involved the encapsulation of the pH-inert red-fluorescent dye Nile Red (NR) in the core of self-made carboxylated PSNPs by a simple swelling procedure and the fabrication of rhodamine B (RhB)-stained SiO₂-NPs from a silane derivative of pH-insensitive RhB. Subsequently, the custom-made naphthalimide pH probe, that utilizes a protonation-controlled photoinduced electron transfer process, was covalently attached to the carboxylic acid groups at the surface of both types of NPs. Fluorescence microscopy studies with the molecular and nanoscale optical probes and A549 lung cancer cells confirmed the cellular uptake of all probes and their penetration into acidic cell compartments, i.e., the lysosomes, indicated by the switching ON of the green naphthalimide fluorescence. This underlines their suitability for intracellular pH sensing, with the SiO₂-based nanosensor revealing the best performance regarding uptake speed and stability.

Nanomaterials as Photocatalysts-Synthesis and Their Potential Applications

Increasing demand for energy and environmental degradation are the most serious problems facing the man. An interesting issue that can contribute to solving these problems is the use of photocatalysis. According to literature, solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can effectively (i) be converted into electricity/fuel, (ii) break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and (iii) help water purification. Therefore, the search for new, efficient, and stable photocatalysts with high application potential is a point of great interest. The photocatalysts must be characterized by the ability to absorb radiation from a wide spectral range of light, the appropriate position of the semiconductor energy bands in relation to the redox reaction potentials, and the long diffusion path of charge carriers, besides the thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical stabilities. Meeting these requirements by semiconductors is very difficult. Therefore, efforts are being made to increase the efficiency of photo processes by changing the electron structure, surface morphology, and crystal structure of semiconductors. This paper reviews the recent literature covering the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in photocatalysis.

The Effect of Combined Atmospheric Plasma/UV Treatments on Improving the Durability of Flame Retardants Applied to Cotton

Application of a combined atmospheric plasma/UV laser to cotton fabrics impregnated with selected non-durable flame retardants (FRs) has shown evidence of covalent grafting of the latter species on to cotton fibre surfaces. As a result, an increase in their durability to water-soaking for 30 min at 40 °C has been recorded. Based on previous research plasma gases comprising Ar80%/CO220% or N280%/O220% were used to pre-expose cotton fabric prior to or after FR impregnation to promote the formation of radical species and increased −COOH groups on surface cellulosic chains, which would encourage formation of FR-cellulose bonds. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal analysis (TGA) suggested that organophosphorus- and nitrogen- containing flame retarding species in the presence of the silicon-containing molecules such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APTS) resulted in formation of FR-S-O-cellulose links, which gave rise to post-water-soaking FR retentions > 10%. Similarly, the organophosphorus FR, diethyl N, N bis (2-hydroxyethyl) aminomethylphosphonate (DBAP), after plasma/UV exposure produced similar percentage retention values possibly via (PO).O.cellulose bond formation, While none of the plasmas/UV-treated, FR-impregnated fabrics showed self-extinction behaviour, although burning rates reduced and significant char formation was evident, it has been shown that FR durability may be increased using plasma/UV treatments.

Sulfonated calixarene modified Poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles:A promising adsorbent for Removal of Vanadium Ions from aqueous media

The poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based nanoparticle was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization method and then post modified with Calixarene using (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane organo-silane as a linker after OH-treatment. The prepared structure was applied for efficient adsorption of Vanadium ions in the aqueous solution after characterization by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, DLS, and EDX. Additional investigations discovered that the prepared adsorbent has a good capacity to adsorb vanadium ions. The effect of key experimental factors was studied to find the optimal point of adsorbent efficiency including the initial concentration of analyte, sorbent dosage, pH of the solution, contact time, and type/quantity of the eluents. It was specified, the maximum adsorption capacity for the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained about 322 mg g^-1. The adsorption mechanism was revealed that the model of Langmuir isotherm well-matched compared to the others due to the calculated equilibrium data. Besides, the kinetics of the adsorption process was fitted with pseudo-second-order. Eventually, the prepared adsorbent was successfully applied in vanadium adsorption from real water media.

Surface Functionalities of Polymers for Biomaterial Applications

Changes of a material biointerface allow for specialized cell signaling and diverse biological responses. Biomaterials incorporating immobilized bioactive ligands have been widely introduced and used for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications in order to develop biomaterials with improved functionality. Furthermore, a variety of physical and chemical techniques have been utilized to improve biomaterial functionality, particularly at the material interface. At the interface level, the interactions between materials and cells are described. The importance of surface features in cell function is then examined, with new strategies for surface modification being highlighted in detail.

The Bioanalytical and Biomedical Applications of Polymer Modified Substrates

Polymers with different structures and morphology have been extensively used to construct functionalized surfaces for a wide range of applications because the physicochemical properties of polymers can be finely adjusted by their molecular weights, polydispersity and configurations, as well as the chemical structures and natures of monomers. In particular, the specific functions of polymers can be easily achieved at post-synthesis by the attachment of different kinds of active molecules such as recognition ligand, peptides, aptamers and antibodies. In this review, the recent advances in the bioanalytical and biomedical applications of polymer modified substrates were summarized with subsections on functionalization using branched polymers, polymer brushes and polymer hydrogels. The review focuses on their applications as biosensors with excellent analytical performance and/or as nonfouling surfaces with efficient antibacterial activity. Finally, we discuss the perspectives and future directions of polymer modified substrates in the development of biodevices for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases.

Residue-Specific Incorporation of the Non-Canonical Amino Acid Norleucine Improves Lipase Activity on Synthetic Polyesters

Environmentally friendly functionalization and recycling processes for synthetic polymers have recently gained momentum, and enzymes play a central role in these procedures. However, natural enzymes must be engineered to accept synthetic polymers as substrates. To enhance the activity on synthetic polyesters, the canonical amino acid methionine in Thermoanaerobacter thermohydrosulfuricus lipase (TTL) was exchanged by the residue-specific incorporation method for the more hydrophobic non-canonical norleucine (Nle). Strutural modelling of TTL revealed that residues Met-114 and Met-142 are in close vicinity of the active site and their replacement by the norleucine could modulate the catalytic activity of the enzyme. Indeed, hydrolysis of the polyethylene terephthalate model substrate by the Nle variant resulted in significantly higher amounts of release products than the Met variant. A similar trend was observed for an ionic phthalic polyester containing a short alkyl diol (C5). Interestingly, a 50% increased activity was found for TTL [Nle] towards ionic phthalic polyesters containing different ether diols compared to the parent enzyme TTL [Met]. These findings clearly demonstrate the high potential of non-canonical amino acids for enzyme engineering.

Reinforced Epoxy Composites Modified with Functionalized Graphene Oxide

The possibility of using graphene oxide as a modifying additive for polymer fiber-reinforced composites based on epoxy resin and basalt roving has been studied. The content of graphene oxide in the system has been experimentally selected, which has the best effect on the physico-mechanical properties of the obtained polymer composite material. The efficiency of the modification of the graphene oxide surface with APTES finishing additives and aminoacetic acid, which provides chemical interaction at the polymer matrix–filler interface, has been considered. The influence of graphene oxide and functionalizing additives on the polymer curing process was investigated using the thermometric method and differential scanning calorimetry.

Oriented immobilization of antibodies onto sensing platforms - A critical review

The immunosensor has been proven a versatile tool to detect various analytes, such as food contaminants, pathogenic bacteria, antibiotics and biomarkers related to cancer. To fabricate robust and reproducible immunosensors with high sensitivity, the covalent immobilization of immunoglobulins (IgGs) in a site-specific manner contributes to better performance. Instead of the random IgG orientations result from the direct yet non-selective immobilization techniques, this review for the first time introduces the advances of stepwise yet site-selective conjugation strategies to give better biosensing efficiency. Noncovalently adsorbing IgGs is the first but decisive step to interact specifically with the Fc fragment, then following covalent conjugate can fix this uniform and antigens-favorable orientation irreversibly. In this review, we first categorized this stepwise strategy into two parts based on the different noncovalent interactions, namely adhesive layer-mediated interaction onto homofunctional support and layer-free interaction onto heterofunctional support (which displays several different functionalities on its surface that are capable to interact with IgGs). Further, the influence of ligands characteristics (synthesis strategies, spacer requirements and matrices selection) on the heterofunctional support has also been discussed. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives for the real-world application of stepwise covalent conjugation are discussed. This review provides more insights into the fabrication of high-efficiency immunosensor, and special attention has been devoted to the well-orientation of full-length IgGs onto the sensing platform.

Local Surface Chemistry Dynamically Monitored by Quantitative Phase Microscopy

Surface modification by photo grafting constitutes an interesting strategy to prepare functional surfaces. Precision applications, however, demand quantitative methods able to monitor and control the amount and distribution of surface modifications, which is hard to achieve, particularly in operando conditions. In this paper, a label-free, cost-effective, all-optical method based on wavefront sensing which is able to quantitatively track the evolution of grafted layers in real-time, is presented. By positioning a simple thin diffuser in the close vicinity of a camera, the thickness of grafted patterns is directly evaluated with sub-nanometric sensitivity and diffraction-limited lateral resolution. By performing an in-depth kinetic analysis of the local modification of an inert substrate (glass cover slips) through photografting of arydiazonium salts, different growth regimes are characterized and several parameters are estimated, such as the grafting efficiency, density and the apparent refractive index distribution of the resulting grafted layers. Both focused and widefield-grafting can be quantitatively monitored in real time, providing valuable guidelines to maximize functionalization efficiency. The association of a well-characterized versatile photografting reaction with the proposed flexible and sensitive monitoring strategy enables functional surfaces to be prepared, and puts surface micro- to submicro-structuration within the reach of most laboratories.

Evaluation of 2-Bromoisobutyryl Catechol Derivatives for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization-Functionalized Polydopamine Coatings

The use of α-bromoisobutyryl-functionalized polydopamine (PDA), derived from an in situ mixture with dopamine (DA) and α-bromoisobutyryl bromide, enables surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of a broad range of methacrylate monomers for surface functionalization. Although the putative intermediate 2-bromo-N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)-2-methylpropanamide 1 has been proposed to account for the SI-ATRP activity of α-bromoisobutyryl-functionalized PDA, there has not been a systematic investigation on the efficacy of other catechol-derived 2-bromoisobutyryl derivatives for SI-ATRP. In this work, a number of catechol-derived ATRP initiators containing the 2-bromoisobutyryl moiety were designed and synthesized, in an effort to investigate the effect of changes in structure on initiator immobilization, and subsequent ATRP performance. The change in the length of the linker unit bearing the 2-bromoisobutyryl moiety, the introduction of a free amine group, or the replacement of the amide with an ester were found to have profound effects on the ability of the molecule to deposit ATRP-initiator-modified PDA coatings, as well as the subsequent SI-ATRP performance. Among the ATRP initiators synthesized, 5-(2-aminoethyl)-2,3-dihydroxyphenethyl 2-bromo-2-methylpropanoate hydrobromide 4·HBr was most efficiently incorporated into ATRP-initiator-modified PDA coatings and also the best at effecting SI-ATRP with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate; the high performance of this initiator is likely due to the presence of a free amine and an appropriately long methylene linker unit to the 2-bromoisobutyryl moiety. This methodology was found to be suitable for the functionalization of a range of organic and inorganic surfaces, for the fabrication of high-value surface-grafted polymer brush coatings for various applications.

High-throughput screening and rational design of biofunctionalized surfaces with optimized biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity

Peptides are widely used for surface modification to develop improved implants, such as cell adhesion RGD peptide and antimicrobial peptide (AMP). However, it is a daunting challenge to identify an optimized condition with the two peptides showing their intended activities and the parameters for reaching such a condition. Herein, we develop a high-throughput strategy, preparing titanium (Ti) surfaces with a gradient in peptide density by click reaction as a platform, to screen the positions with desired functions. Such positions are corresponding to optimized molecular parameters (peptide densities/ratios) and associated preparation parameters (reaction times/reactant concentrations). These parameters are then extracted to prepare nongradient mono- and dual-peptide functionalized Ti surfaces with desired biocompatibility or/and antimicrobial activity in vitro and in vivo. We also demonstrate this strategy could be extended to other materials. Here, we show that the high-throughput versatile strategy holds great promise for rational design and preparation of functional biomaterial surfaces.

"CHicable" and "Clickable" Copolymers for Network Formation and Surface Modification

In this study, we present the generation of novel, multifunctional polymer networks through a combination of C,H-insertion cross-linking (CHic) and click chemistry. To this, copolymers consisting of hydrophilic N,N-dimethylacrylamide as matrix component and repeat units containing azide moieties, as well as benzophenone or anthraquinone groups, are generated. The benzophenone or anthraquinone groups allow photo-cross-linking, surface attachment or covalent immobilization of adjacent (bio)molecules through CHic reactions. The azide moieties either can react with available alkynes through conventional click reactions or can be activated to form nitrenes, which can also undergo CHic reactions. By choosing appropriate reaction conditions, the same polymer can be used to follow very different reaction paths, opening up a plethora of choices for the generation of functional polymer networks. In the exemplary presented case ("CHic-Click"), irradiation of the copolymers with UV-A light (λ_irr = 365 nm) leads to cross-linking (network formation) and surface attachment simultaneously. The azide units remain intact during this cross-linking step, and alkyne-modified (bio)molecules can be bound through click reactions. Biofunctionalization of the polymer network with alkynylated streptavidin, followed by application of biotin-conjugated antibody and a model analyte, highlights the potential of these surface architectures as a toolbox which can be adapted for diverse bioanalytical applications.

Is Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) a Suitable Substrate for ALD?: A Review

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a thermoplastic synthetic polymer, which displays superior characteristics such as transparency, good tensile strength, and processability. Its performance can be improved by surface engineering via the use of functionalized thin film coatings, resulting in its versatility across a host of applications including, energy harvesting, dielectric layers and water purification. Modification of the PMMA surface can be achieved by atomic layer deposition (ALD), a vapor-phase, chemical deposition technique, which permits atomic-level control. However, PMMA presents a challenge for ALD due to its lack of active surface sites, necessary for gas precursor reaction, nucleation, and subsequent growth. The purpose of this review is to discuss the research related to the employment of PMMA as either a substrate, support, or masking layer over a range of ALD thin film growth techniques, namely, thermal, plasma-enhanced, and area-selective atomic layer deposition. It also highlights applications in the selected fields of flexible electronics, biomaterials, sensing, and photocatalysis, and underscores relevant characterization techniques. Further, it concludes with a prospective view of the role of ALD in PMMA processing.

Building Tailored Interfaces through Covalent Coupling Reactions at Layers Grafted from Aryldiazonium Salts

Aryldiazonium ions are widely used reagents for surface modification. Attractive aspects of their use include wide substrate compatibility (ranging from plastics to carbons to metals and metal oxides), formation of stable covalent bonding to the substrate, simplicity of modification methods that are compatible with organic and aqueous solvents, and the commercial availability of many aniline precursors with a straightforward conversion to the active reagent. Importantly, the strong bonding of the modifying layer to the surface makes the method ideally suited to further on-surface (postfunctionalization) chemistry. After an initial grafting from a suitable aryldiazonium ion to give an anchor layer, a target species can be coupled to the layer, hugely expanding the range of species that can be immobilized. This strategy has been widely employed to prepare materials for numerous applications including chemical sensors, biosensors, catalysis, optoelectronics, composite materials, and energy conversion and storage. In this Review our goal is first to summarize how a target species with a particular functional group may be covalently coupled to an appropriate anchor layer. We then review applications of the resulting materials.

Hybrid polyurethanes composed of isobutyl-substituted open-cage silsesquioxane in the main chains: synthesis, properties and surface segregation in a polymer matrix

The resulting polyurethanes exhibited excellent optical transparency and surface hydrophobicity and acted as effective surface modifiers in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by surface segregation.

Surface modification of electrospun silk/AMOX/PVA nanofibers by dielectric barrier discharge plasma: physiochemical properties, drug delivery and in-vitro biocompatibility

The naturally obtained protein Bombyxmori silk is a biocompatible polymer with excellent mechanical properties and have the potential in controlled drug delivery applications. In this work, we have demonstrated dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) oxygen (O2) plasma surface modified electrospun Bombyxmori silk/Amoxicillin hydrochloride trihydrate (AMOX)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers for drug release applications with controlled plasma treatment duration (1-10 min). The findings indicate that plasma treated electrospun nanofibers for 1-3 min exhibited significant enhancement in tensile strength, Young's modulus, wettability and surface energy. The plasma treated electrospun nanofibers for 1-5 min showed remarkable increase in AMOX released rate, whereas the electrospun nanofibers treated with plasma irradiation beyond 5 min showed only marginal increase. Moreover, the plasma treated nanofibers also exhibited good antibacterial activity against both E. coli (gram negative) and S. aureus (gram positive) bacteria. The untreated and the plasma treated silk/AMOX/PVA electrospun nanofibers for 1-3 min showed enhanced viability of primary adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) growth on them and much less hemolysis activity (< 5%). The in vitro biocompatibility of various electrospun nanofibers were further corroborated by live/dead imaging and cytoskeletal architecture assessment demonstrating enhanced cell adhesion and spreading on the plasma treated nanofibers for 1-3 min. The findings of the present study suggest that the silk/AMOX/PVA electrospun nanofibers with plasma treatment (1-3 min) due to their enhanced drug release ability and biocompatibility can be used as potential wound dressing applications.

Surface Modification of Parylene C Film via Buchwald-Hartwig Amination for Organic Solvent-Compatible and Flexible Microfluidic Channel Bonding

Surface modification offers an efficient and economical route to installing functional groups on a polymer surface. This work demonstrates that primary amine groups can be introduced onto a polymer surface via Buchwald-Hartwig amination, and the functionalized substrates can be chemically bonded to produce functional microfluidic devices. By activating the CCl bond in commercially used poly(chloro-p-xylylene) (parylene C) by Pd catalyst and substituting Cl with the amine source, the amine groups are successfully installed in a facile and recyclable manner. The substrates can be covalently bonded with each other via amine-isocyanate chemistry, providing much higher bonding strength compared to previous methods based on noncovalent adhesive coatings. As a result, transparent and flexible microfluidic channels can be fabricated that are compatible with organic solvents and high pressure. Retention of amine group reactivity in the channel suggests the potential of this methodology for the surface immobilization of functional molecules for microfluidic reactors and biosensors.

Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity of Thin Film Coated on Polycarbonate Surface with N- and Ni-Codoped TiO2 Photocatalyst

N- and Ni-coated TiO2 (NNT) were prepared by a facile sol-gel method as a photosensitive photocatalyst to visible light. NNT sol was used to coat the surface of an LED lamp cap and body made of polycarbonate with a thin NNT film. The coated thin film was dried in an oven at 130 °C. This NNT thin film had an amorphous TiO2 structure and absorbed 600 nm of visible light. The decomposition properties of formaldehyde on the NNT photocatalyst after irradiation with visible light were investigated. The LED lamp was irradiated with visible light at 500–620 nm and 6 W. Formaldehyde was decomposed by a photocatalytic reaction by visible light irradiation on the NNT-coated polycarbonate surface. Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were also used to examine the sterilizing properties of pathogenic bacteria using an LED lamp kit. The pathogenic bacteria on the NNT-coated polycarbonate surface were sterilized by irradiation with visible light.

Tribological and nanomechanical properties of a lignin-based biopolymer

A research is reported on the nanomechanics and tribology of the Arboblend V2 Nature biopolymer (a 100% bio-based material, biodegradable, or resistant depending of application), being a mixture of different biopolymers such as lignin, polylactic acid, cellulose, biopolyamides, and other natural additives. The specimens were made by an industrial-scale injection molding machine. The nanoindentation characterization have unveiled that an increase in processing temperature from 160°C to 170°C produces a rise in hardness and elastic modulus of ∼20%. Tribological characterization against a bearing-steel counterface has shown that for both processing temperatures, the increase of the applied load or the increase of sliding speed will produce an increase of the friction coefficient (µ) and wear. At an applied load of 1 N (contact pressure of 104 MPa) and tracks in a direction perpendicular to the surface textured lines, the lowest µ ∼ 0.148 are for samples made T = 170°C, while for tracks parallel to the textured lines, the lowest µ ∼ 0.059 is obtained for samples made at T = 160°C. Experiments made at different ambient humidity have established that friction coefficient is higher at 0% RH or at 75% RH than at 33% RH. Our results show that the biopolymers Arboblend V2 Nature is a candidate to substitute some popular fossil-based thermoplastics in numerous tribological industrial applications.

Surface Segregation of a Star-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane in a Polymer Matrix

A simple way to control only the surface properties of polymer materials, without changing the bulk properties, has long been desired. The segregation behavior when a component with a tiny amount fed into the matrix is thermodynamically enriched at the surface is one of the candidate methods. This capability was examined herein by focusing on a star-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (s-POSS), where the central POSS unit is tethered to eight isobutyl-substituted POSS cages as a surface modifier. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the surface of a film of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was almost completely covered with POSS units by adding just 5 wt % s-POSS to it. The segregated POSS dramatically altered the physical properties such as molecular motion and the mechanical and dielectric responses at the surface of the PMMA film. These findings make it clear that s-POSS is an excellent surface modifier for glassy polymers.

Controlled drug release performance of plasma modified slab and mat matrices: A model study with "Ampicillin"

Two types of ampicillin carrier platforms were prepared with polycaprolactone (PCL) and the release behavior of a hydrophilic model drug (ampicillin sodium salt) from those matrices was investigated. Spin coating and electrospinning techniques were used to prepare slab and mat platforms, respectively. Ampicillin sodium salt (ASS) at 5% (w:w) concentration was loaded into the slab or mat structures of PCL. The thickness of the slab was measured 3.349 ± 0.345 μm and surface morphology of the slabs showed uniform PCL spherulites. On the other hand, fiber diameter of PCL and ASS loaded PCL (ASSLPCL) was measured 604 ± 176 nm and 549 ± 119 nm, respectively. The dynamic behavior of the controlled release was improved by a very thin film (<100 nm) formation of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) over the surface via plasma polymerization. Plasma coating was facilitated and speed up the drug diffusion, then led to 45.60 ± 6.46% and 63.67 ± 4.33% enhancement of drug from slab and mat, respectively. Transport mechanism from all matrices showed a Fickian diffusion behavior and plasma modification of the surface did not affected the mechanism. The in vitro antibacterial property of ASS loaded matrices against S. aureus and E. coli was studied through the comparison of bacterial inhibition zones and ASS showed antibacterial effect after all processes.

Functionalized multiscale visual models to unravel flow and transport physics in porous structures

The fluid flow, species transport, and chemical reactions in geological formations are the chief mechanisms in engineering the exploitation of fossil fuels and geothermal energy, the geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO₂), and the disposal of hazardous materials. Porous rock is characterized by a wide surface area, where the physicochemical fluid-solid interactions dominate the multiphase flow behavior. A variety of visual models with differences in dimensions, patterns, surface properties, and fabrication techniques have been widely utilized to simulate and directly visualize such interactions in porous media. This review discusses the six categories of visual models used in geological flow applications, including packed beds, Hele-Shaw cells, synthesized microchips (also known as microfluidic chips or micromodels), geomaterial-dominated microchips, three-dimensional (3D) microchips, and nanofluidics. For each category, critical technical points (such as surface chemistry and geometry) and practical applications are summarized. Finally, we discuss opportunities and provide a framework for the development of custom-built visual models.

Preparation of Biomass-Based Ester End-Capped Hyperbranched Poly(ether)s via Facile One-Pot Reaction and Their Performance as Non-Toxic Plasticizers

The aim of this study was to develop a facile one-pot reaction for the synthesis of biomass-based hyperbranched poly(ether)s end-capped as acetate esters (BHE) for use as a sustainable, safe and feasible plasticizer for flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) materials. BHE is completely miscible with PVC but shows weaker plasticizing effect than dioctyl phthalate (DOP) (EΔTg value of BHE reaches 64.8%). PVC plasticized with BHE displays greater thermal stability than that of PVC or PVC plasticized with DOP materials. BHE improves the thermal stability and flexibility of PVC materials. As a plasticizer, BHE displays lower solvent extractability and greater volatilization resistance than DOP. Acute oral toxicity indicates that BHE has toxic doses of 5 g/kg, suggesting that BHE is non-toxic.

Enhanced Protein Immobilization on Polymers-A Plasma Surface Activation Study

Over the last years, polymers have gained great attention as substrate material, because of the possibility to produce low-cost sensors in a high-throughput manner or for rapid prototyping and the wide variety of polymeric materials available with different features (like transparency, flexibility, stretchability, etc.). For almost all biosensing applications, the interaction between biomolecules (for example, antibodies, proteins or enzymes) and the employed substrate surface is highly important. In order to realize an effective biomolecule immobilization on polymers, different surface activation techniques, including chemical and physical methods, exist. Among them, plasma treatment offers an easy, fast and effective activation of the surfaces by micro/nanotexturing and generating functional groups (including carboxylic acids, amines, esters, aldehydes or hydroxyl groups). Hence, here we present a systematic and comprehensive plasma activation study of various polymeric surfaces by optimizing different parameters, including power, time, substrate temperature and gas composition. Thereby, the highest immobilization efficiency along with a homogenous biomolecule distribution is achieved with a 5-min plasma treatment under a gas composition of 50% oxygen and nitrogen, at a power of 1000 W and a substrate temperature of 80 °C. These results are also confirmed by different surface characterization methods, including SEM, XPS and contact angle measurements.

Improvement of rBMSCs Responses to Poly(propylene carbonate) Based Biomaterial through Incorporation of Nanolaponite and Surface Treatment Using Sodium Hydroxide

Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) has aroused extensive attention in the biomaterial field because of its excellent biocompatibility and appropriate degradability, but surface hydrophobicity and bioinertness limit its applications for bone repair and tissue engineering. In this study, a bioactive PPC/laponite (LAP) nanocomposite (PL) was prepared by a melt-blending method, and a microporous surface on PPC and PL (PT and PLT) was created by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment. The results demonstrated that the surface roughness, hydrophilicity, surface energy, and degradability as well as protein adsorption of PLT were obviously improved compared with PPC. Moreover, the degradability of PLT was remarkably enhanced with a slight increase of pH values in Tris-HCl solution. Furthermore, adhesion and proliferation as well as osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) to PLT were significantly promoted compared with PPC. The results suggested that incorporating LAP into PPC obviously improved the surface performance of PL (with nanotopography), and surface treatment with NaOH further enhanced surface properties of PLT (with micronanotopography and hydrophilic groups), which significantly promoted responses of rBMSCs. In short, PLT displayed excellent cytocompatibility, which would have great potential for bone regeneration.

Multimodal Cleavable Reporters for Quantifying Carboxy and Amino Groups on Organic and Inorganic Nanoparticles

Organic and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly used as drug carriers, fluorescent sensors, and multimodal labels in the life and material sciences. These applications require knowledge of the chemical nature, total number of surface groups, and the number of groups accessible for subsequent coupling of e.g., antifouling ligands, targeting bioligands, or sensor molecules. To establish the concept of catch-and-release assays, cleavable probes were rationally designed from a quantitatively cleavable disulfide moiety and the optically detectable reporter 2-thiopyridone (2-TP). For quantifying surface groups on nanomaterials, first, a set of monodisperse carboxy-and amino-functionalized, 100 nm-sized polymer and silica NPs with different surface group densities was synthesized. Subsequently, the accessible functional groups (FGs) were quantified via optical spectroscopy of the cleaved off reporter after its release in solution. Method validation was done with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) utilizing the sulfur atom of the cleavable probe. This comparison underlined the reliability and versatility of our probes, which can be used for surface group quantification on all types of transparent, scattering, absorbing and/or fluorescent particles. The correlation between the total and accessible number of FGs quantified by conductometric titration, qNMR, and with our cleavable probes, together with the comparison to results of conjugation studies with differently sized biomolecules reveal the potential of catch-and-release reporters for surface analysis. Our findings also underline the importance of quantifying particularly the accessible amount of FGs for many applications of NPs in the life sciences.

Robust chemical bonding of PMMA microfluidic devices to porous PETE membranes for reliable cytotoxicity testing of drugs

Here, we report a simple yet reliable method for bonding poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) track-etched membranes using (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GLYMO), which enables reliable cytotoxicity tests in a microfluidic device impermeable to small molecules, such as anti-cancer drugs. The porous PETE membranes treated with 5% GLYMO were assembled with microfluidic channel-engraved PMMA substrates after air plasma treatment for 1 minute, followed by heating at 100 °C for 2 minutes, which permits irreversible and complete bonding to be achieved within 1 h. The bonding strength between the two substrates (1.97 × 10⁷ kg m^-2) was robust enough to flow culture medium through the device without leakage even at a gauge pressure of above 135 kPa. For validation of its utility in drugs testing, we successfully demonstrated that human lung adenocarcinoma cells cultured in the PMMA devices show more reliable cytotoxicity results for vincristine in comparison to conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) devices due to the inherent property of PMMA of it being impervious to small molecules. Given that the current organ-on-a-chip fabrication methods mostly rely on PDMS, this bonding strategy will expand simple fabrication capability using various thermoplastics and porous track-etched membranes, and allow us to create 3D-micro-constructs that more precisely mimic organ-level physiological conditions.
