Engineering the surface roughness of the gold nanoparticles for the modulation of LSPR and SERS

In this work, we reported that by using a strong thiol ligand as the morphology-directing reagent, a series of Au nanoparticles with plate-like surface sub-structures could be successfully obtained via a one-pot seedless synthesis. The size and the density of the plates on the surface of Au can be readily tuned with the amount of the thiol ligand, resembling different roughness of the surface. Arising from the different surface roughness, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of these shape and morphological alike Au nanoparticles can be continuously tuned within the visible-NIR region. The broad LSPR absorptions and feasible tunability make the Au nanoparticles suitable candidate for plasmonic-related applications. Interestingly, huge SERS enhancement was simultaneously achieved based on the specific surface roughness. Our results demonstrate the great potentials for tuning the LSPR and SERS of Au nanostructures through the engineering of the surface morphologies, which would assist for the design, synthesis, and applications of Au-based plasmonic nanomaterials in various fields.

Semi-invasive wearable clinic: Solution-processed smart microneedle electronics for next-generation integrated diagnosis and treatment

The integrated smart electronics for real-time monitoring and personalized therapy of disease-related analytes have been gradually gaining tremendous attention. However, human tissue barriers, including the skin barrier and brain-blood barrier, pose significant challenges for effective biomarker detection and drug delivery. Microneedle (MN) electronics present a promising solution to overcome these tissue barriers due to their semi-invasive structures, enabling effective drug delivery and target-analyte detection without compromising the tissue configuration. Furthermore, MNs can be fabricated through solution processing, facilitating large-scale manufacturing. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the recent three-year advancements in smart MNs development, categorized as follows. First, the solution-processed technology for MNs is introduced, with a focus on various printing technologies. Subsequently, smart MNs designed for sensing, drug delivery, and integrated systems combining diagnosis and treatment are separately summarized. Finally, the prospective and promising applications of next-generation MNs within mediated diagnosis and treatment systems are discussed.

Plasmon-Induced Hot Electrons in Nanostructured Materials: Generation, Collection, and Application to Photochemistry

Plasmon refers to the coherent oscillation of all conduction-band electrons in a nanostructure made of a metal or a heavily doped semiconductor. Upon excitation, the plasmon can decay through different channels, including nonradiative Landau damping for the generation of plasmon-induced energetic carriers, the so-called hot electrons and holes. The energetic carriers can be collected by transferring to a functional material situated next to the plasmonic component in a hybrid configuration to facilitate a range of photochemical processes for energy or chemical conversion. This article centers on the recent advancement in generating and utilizing plasmon-induced hot electrons in a rich variety of hybrid nanostructures. After a brief introduction to the fundamentals of hot-electron generation and decay in plasmonic nanocrystals, we extensively discuss how to collect the hot electrons with various types of functional materials. With a focus on plasmonic nanocrystals made of metals, we also briefly examine those based upon heavily doped semiconductors. Finally, we illustrate how site-selected growth can be leveraged for the rational fabrication of different types of hybrid nanostructures, with an emphasis on the parameters that can be experimentally controlled to tailor the properties for various applications.

Quantum engineering of the radiative properties of a nanoscale mesoscopic system

Despite the recent advances in quantum technology, the problem of controlling the light emission properties of quantum emitters used in numerous applications remains: a large spectral width, low intensity, blinking, photodegradation, biocompatibility, etc. In this work, we present the theoretical and experimental investigation of quantum light sources - mesoscopic systems consisting of fluorescent molecules in a thin polydopamine layer coupled with metallic or dielectric nanoparticles. Polydopamines possess many attractive adhesive and optical properties that promise their use as host media for dye molecules. However, numerous attempts to incorporate fluorescent molecules into polydopamines have failed, as polydopamine has been shown to be a very efficient fluorescence quencher through Förster resonance energy transfer and/or photoinduced electron transfer. Using the system as an example, we demonstrate new insights into the interactions between molecules and electromagnetic fields by carefully shaping its energy levels through strong matter-wave coupling of molecules to metallic nanoparticles. We show that the strong coupling effectively suppresses the quenching of fluorescent molecules in polydopamine, opening new possibilities for imaging.

Site-Selective Deposition of Silica Nanoframes and Nanocages onto Faceted Gold Nanostructures Using a Primer-free Tetraethyl Orthosilicate Synthesis

The Stöber method for forming spherical silica colloids is well-established as one of the pillars of colloidal synthesis. In a modified form, it has been extensively used to deposit both porous and protective shells over metal nanomaterials. Current best-practice techniques require that the vitreophobic surface of metal nanoparticles be primed with a surface ligand to promote silica deposition. Although such techniques have proved highly successful in forming core-shell configurations, the site-selective deposition of silica onto preselected areas of faceted metal nanostructures has proved far more challenging. Herein, a primer-free TEOS-based synthesis is demonstrated that is capable of forming architecturally complex nanoframes and nanocages on the pristine surfaces of faceted gold nanostructures. The devised synthesis overcomes vitreophobicity using elevated TEOS concentrations that trigger silica nucleation along the low-coordination sites where gold facets meet. Continued deposition sees the emergence of a well-connected frame followed by the lateral infilling of the openings formed over gold facets. With growth readily terminated at any point in this sequence, the synthesis distinguishes itself in being able to achieve patterned and tunable silica depositions expressing interfaces that are uncorrupted by primers. The so-formed structures are demonstrated as template materials capable of asserting high-level control over synthesis and assembly processes by using the deposited silica as a mask that deactivates selected areas against these processes while allowing them to proceed elsewhere. The work, hence, extends the capabilities and versatility of TEOS-based syntheses and provides pathways for forming multicomponent nanostructures and nanoassemblies with structurally engineered properties.

Tailor-Made Gold Nanomaterials for Applications in Soft Bioelectronics and Optoelectronics

In modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, gold nanomaterials are indispensable building blocks that have demonstrated a plethora of applications in catalysis, biology, bioelectronics, and optoelectronics. Gold nanomaterials possess many appealing material properties, such as facile control over their size/shape and surface functionality, intrinsic chemical inertness yet with high biocompatibility, adjustable localized surface plasmon resonances, tunable conductivity, wide electrochemical window, etc. Such material attributes have been recently utilized for designing and fabricating soft bioelectronics and optoelectronics. This motivates to give a comprehensive overview of this burgeoning field. The discussion of representative tailor-made gold nanomaterials, including gold nanocrystals, ultrathin gold nanowires, vertically aligned gold nanowires, hard template-assisted gold nanowires/gold nanotubes, bimetallic/trimetallic gold nanowires, gold nanomeshes, and gold nanosheets, is begun. This is followed by the description of various fabrication methodologies for state-of-the-art applications such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, electrochemical sensors, electrophysiological devices, energy-storage devices, energy-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, and others. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Magnesium Nanoparticles for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering and Plasmon-Driven Catalysis

Nanostructures of some metals can sustain localized surface plasmon resonances, collective oscillations of free electrons excited by incident light. This effect results in wavelength-dependent absorption and scattering, enhancement of the incident electric field at the metal surface, and generation of hot carriers as a decay product. The enhanced electric field can be utilized to amplify the spectroscopic signal in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), while hot carriers can be exploited for catalytic applications. In recent years, cheaper and more earth abundant alternatives to traditional plasmonic Au and Ag have gained growing attention. Here, we demonstrate the ability of plasmonic Mg nanoparticles to enhance Raman scattering and drive chemical transformations upon laser irradiation. The plasmonic properties of Mg nanoparticles are characterized at the bulk and single particle level by optical spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy-loss spectroscopy and supported by numerical simulations. SERS enhancement factors of ∼102 at 532 and 633 nm are obtained using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrobenzenethiol. Furthermore, the reductive coupling of 4-nitrobenzenethiol to 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene is observed on the surface of Mg nanoparticles under 532 nm excitation in the absence of reducing agents, indicating a plasmon-driven catalytic process. Once decorated with Pd, Mg nanostructures display an enhancement factor of 103 along with an increase in the rate of catalytic coupling. The results of this study demonstrate the successful application of plasmonic Mg nanoparticles in sensing and plasmon-enhanced catalysis.

Highly luminescent, fast switching electro-optical device based on core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles/ ferroelectric liquid crystal composites

Owing to the passive nature of liquid crystal (LC) materials, achieving luminous displays using pure LC materials is challenging. In addition, it is difficult to achieve a fast switching time using pristine ferroelectric LC devices without compromising their cell thickness. Herein, we have developed a fast switching and highly luminescent electro-optical device by dispersing a minute concentration of bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs) having a spherical gold core and a silver shell within a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) host matrix, ZLI3654. Au@Ag core-shell NPs having synergic attributes of both counterparts were successfully synthesized by a facile seed-mediated route. The Au core helps to tune the shape of the Ag shell and provides enhanced electron density as well as improved stability against oxidation. Introducing nanoparticles induces little structural modifications to the host FLC, resulting in an improvement in the mesogenic alignment. Interestingly, ∼29-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is observed on dispersing 0.25 wt% of Au@Ag NPs into the FLC host matrix. The enhanced electromagnetic field in the FLC-nanocomposite is attributed to the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of Au@Ag NPs, which strengthens the photon absorption rates by the FLC molecules, culminating in the massive enrichment of the PL intensity. In addition, the improved localized electric field inside the FLC device led to a noticeable enhancement in the spontaneous polarization, dielectric permittivity, and, most interestingly, ∼53% fastening in the switching time at an optimum concentration (0.25 wt%) of Au@Ag NPs. The improved electro-optical parameters of the Au@Ag NPs/FLC composite have been compared with the performance of both pristine Au NPs/FLC and Ag NPs/FLC composites, respectively, for the comprehensiveness of the study. The present study paves a systematic way to develop FLC-based advanced electro-optical devices with faster switching and higher luminescence properties.

Integrating microneedles and sensing strategies for diagnostic and monitoring applications: The state of the art

Microneedles (MNs) offer minimally-invasive access to interstitial fluid (ISF) - a potent alternative to blood in terms of monitoring physiological analytes. This property is particularly advantageous for the painless detection and monitoring of drugs and biomolecules. However, the complexity of the skin environment, coupled with the inherent nature of the analytes being detected and the inherent physical properties of MNs, pose challenges when conducting physiological monitoring using this fluid. In this review, we discuss different sensing mechanisms and highlight advancements in monitoring different targets, with a particular focus on drug monitoring. We further list the current challenges facing the field and conclude by discussing aspects of MN design which serve to enhance their performance when monitoring different classes of analytes.

Capillarity-Driven Enrichment and Hydrodynamic Trapping of Trace Nucleic Acids by Plasmonic Cavity Membrane for Rapid and Sensitive Detections

Small-reactor-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has attracted considerable attention. A significant number of tiny reactors must be prepared in parallel to capture, amplify, and accurately quantify few target genes in clinically relevant large volume, which, however, requires sophisticated microfabrication and longer sample-to-answer time. Here, single plasmonic cavity membrane is reported that not only enriches and captures few nucleic acids by taking advantage of both capillarity and hydrodynamic trapping but also quickly amplifies them for sensitive plasmonic detection. The plasmonic cavity membrane with few nanoliters in a void volume is fabricated by self-assembling gold nanorods with SiO2 tips. Simulations reveal that hydrodynamic stagnation between the SiO2 tips is mainly responsible for the trapping of the nucleic acid in the membrane. Finally, it is shown that the plasmonic cavity membrane is capable of enriching severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genes up to 20 000-fold within 1 min, amplifying within 3 min, and detecting the trace genes as low as a single copy µL-1. It is anticipated that this work not only expands the utility of PCR but also provides an innovative way of the enrichment and detection of trace biomolecules in a variety of point-of-care testing applications.

BODIPY directed one-dimensional self-assembly of gold nanorods

The assembly of anisotropic nanomaterials into ordered structures is challenging. Nevertheless, such self-assembled systems are known to have novel physicochemical properties and the presence of a chromophore within the nanoparticle ensemble can enhance the optical properties through plasmon-molecule electronic coupling. Here, we report the end-to-end assembly of gold nanorods into micrometer-long chains using a linear diamino BODIPY derivative. The preferential binding affinity of the amino group and the steric bulkiness of BODIPY directed the longitudinal assembly of gold nanorods. As a result of the linear assembly, the BODIPY chromophores positioned themselves in the plasmonic hotspots, which resulted in efficient plasmon-molecule coupling, thereby imparting photothermal properties to the assembled nanorods. This work thus demonstrates a new approach for the linear assembly of gold nanorods resulting in a plasmon-molecule coupled system, and the synergy between self-assembly and electronic coupling resulted in an efficient system having potential biomedical applications.

Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence for biophotonics and bio-analytical applications

Fluorescence spectroscopy serves as an ultrasensitive sophisticated tool where background noises which serve as a major impediment to the detection of the desired signals can be safely avoided for detections down to the single-molecule levels. One such way of bypassing background noise is plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF), where the interactions of fluorophores at the surface of metals or plasmonic nanoparticles are probed. The underlying condition is a significant spectral overlap between the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the nanoparticle and the absorption or emission spectra of the fluorophore. The rationale being the coupling of the excited state of the fluorophore with the localized surface plasmon leads to an augmented emission, owing to local field enhancement. It is manifested in enhanced quantum yields concurrent with a decrease in fluorescence lifetimes, owing to an increase in radiative rate constants. This improvement in detection provided by PEF allows a significant scope of expansion in the domain of weakly emitting fluorophores which otherwise would have remained unperceivable. The concept of coupling of weak emitters with plasmons can bypass the problems of photobleaching, opening up avenues of imaging with significantly higher sensitivity and improved resolution. Furthermore, amplification of the emission signal by the coupling of free electrons of the metal nanoparticles with the electrons of the fluorophore provides ample opportunities for achieving lower detection limits that are involved in biological imaging and molecular sensing. One avenue that has attracted significant attraction in the last few years is the fast, label-free detection of bio-analytes under physiological conditions using plasmonic nanoparticles for point-of-care analysis. This review focusses on the applications of plasmonic nanomaterials in the field of biosensing, imaging with a brief introduction on the different aspects of LSPR and fabrication techniques.

Multiscale modeling of surface enhanced fluorescence

The fluorescence response of a chromophore in the proximity of a plasmonic nanostructure can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude, yielding the so-called surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF). An in-depth understanding of SEF mechanisms benefits from fully atomistic theoretical models because SEF signals can be non-trivially affected by the atomistic profile of the nanostructure's surface. This work presents the first fully atomistic multiscale approach to SEF, capable of describing realistic structures. The method is based on coupling density functional theory (DFT) with state-of-the-art atomistic electromagnetic approaches, allowing for reliable physically-based modeling of molecule-nanostructure interactions. Computed results remarkably demonstrate the key role of the NP morphology and atomistic features in quenching/enhancing the fluorescence signal.

Time-dependent Kohn-Sham electron dynamics coupled with nonequilibrium plasmonic response via atomistic electromagnetic model

Computational modeling of plasmon-mediated molecular photophysical and photochemical behaviors can help us better understand and tune the bound molecular properties and reactivity and make better decisions to design and control nanostructures. However, computational investigations of coupled plasmon-molecule systems are challenging due to the lack of accurate and efficient protocols to simulate these systems. Here, we present a hybrid scheme by combining the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) approach with the time-domain frequency dependent fluctuating charge (TD-ωFQ) model. At first, we transform ωFQ in the frequency-domain, an atomistic electromagnetic model for the plasmonic response of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (PMNPs), into the time-domain and derive its equation-of-motion formulation. The TD-ωFQ introduces the nonequilibrium plasmonic response of PMNPs and atomistic interactions to the electronic excitation of the quantum mechanical (QM) region. Then, we combine TD-ωFQ with RT-TDDFT. The derived RT-TDDFT/TD-ωFQ scheme allows us to effectively simulate the plasmon-mediated "real-time" electronic dynamics and even the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics by combining them with the nuclear dynamics approaches. As a first application of the RT-TDDFT/TD-ωFQ method, we study the nonradiative decay rate and plasmon-enhanced absorption spectra of two small molecules in the proximity of sodium MNPs. Thanks to the atomistic nature of the ωFQ model, the edge effect of MNP on absorption enhancement has also been investigated and unveiled.

Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence combined with aptamer sensor based on Ag nanocubes for signal-amplified detection of berberine hydrochloride

Plasmon enhanced fluorescent (PEF) with more "hot spots" play a critical role in signal amplified technology to avoid the intrinsic limitation of fluorophore which ascribed to a strong electromagnetic field at the tip structure. However, application of PEF technique to obtain a highly sensitive analysis of medicine was still at a very early stage. Herein, a simple but versatile Ag nanocubes (Agcubes)-based PEF sensor combined with aptamer (Agcubes@SiO2-QDs-Apt) was proposed for highly sensitive detection of berberine hydrochloride (BH). The distance between the plasma Agcubes and the red-emitted CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were regulated by the thickness of silica spacer. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulation further revealed that Agcubes have a higher electromagnetic field than Ag nanospheres. Compared with PEF sensor, signal QDs-modified aptamer without Agcubes (QDs-Apt) showed a 10-fold higher detection limit. The linear range and detection limit of the Agcubes@SiO2-QDs-Apt were 0.1-100 μM, 87.3 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the PEF sensor was applied to analysis BH in the berberine hydrochloride tablets, compound berberine tablet and urine with good recoveries of 98.25-102.05%. These results demonstrated that the prepared PEF sensor has great potential for drug quality control and clinical analysis.

Analyte-perturbed balance between reducibility and fluorescence of Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots for label-free, dual-mode detection of silver ions

BACKGROUND

As an emerging and attractive low-dimensional functional materials, Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots (QDs) enlarge the toolbox of fluorescence sensing. However, monochromatic fluorescence, which only provide one single signal, is often beset by challenges such as false-positive readouts and limitations in selectivity. Consequently, to improve the sensing accuracy by means of cross-verified dual-signal authentication, the endeavor to engineer dual-mode nanoprobes based on Ti3C2 QDs, incorporating both the capability of fluorescence and an alternative sensing mechanism, emerges as a compelling avenue.

RESULTS

Here, based on the alterations in colorimetric and fluorescent signals of Ti3C2 QDs with the addition of Ag+, we propose a dual-mode sensor obviating the necessity for nanoprobe labeling. Owing to the decent reducibility of Ti3C2 QDs, Ag+ is adsorbed and reduced, resulting in the generation of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs), which simultaneously trigger colorimetric responses of the solution and enhance the fluorescent emission of Ti3C2 QDs. The confluence of colorimetry and fluorometry within this strategy optimally harnesses the modulating role of the acquired Ag NPs on the reducing capability and fluorescence characteristics of Ti3C2 QDs. The equilibrium imparts versatility and promising prospects to this analyte-triggered label-free method, which enables a remarkable specificity and an excellent detecting limit (0.45 μM) for Ag+.

SIGNIFICANCE

The balance between reducibility and fluorescence of Ti3C2 QDs for dual-mode detection is inventively demonstrated. With the exemplification of a direct influence of both features of the nanoprobe via the introduction of analytes, this study opens the feasibility of the analyte-perturbed felicitous equilibrium, which endows label-free methods with versatility and promising prospects. This design may evoke more biosensing strategies with the function of double-signal mutual verification.

The Optimization of the One-Pot Synthesis of Au@SiO2Core-Shell Nanostructures: Modification with Dansyl Group and Their Fluorescent Properties

This work describes the optimization of the one-pot synthesis of fine core-shell nanostructures based on nanogold (Au NPs) and silica (SiO2). The obtained core-shell nanomaterials were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM and by the method of spectroscopes such as UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). In addition, the measurement of the zeta potential and size of the obtained particles helped present a full characterization of Au@SiO2 nanostructures. The results show that the influence of reagents acting as reducers, stabilizers, or precursors of the silica shell affects the morphology of the obtained material. By controlling the effect of the added silica precursor, the thickness of the shell can be manipulated, the reducer has an effect on the shape and variety, and then the stabilizer affects their agglomeration. This work provides also a new approach for Au@SiO2core-shell nanostructure preparation by further modification with dansyl chloride (DNS-Cl). The results show that, by tuning the silica shell thickness, the intensity of the fluorescence spectrum of Au@SiO2-(CH2)3-NH-DNS nanocomposite is about 12 times higher than that of DNS-Cl.

Long-Term Intracellular Tracking of Label-Free Nanoparticles in Live Cells and Tissues with Confocal Microscopy

The label-free imaging of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) provides a powerful and versatile tool for studying interactions between NPs and biological systems. Without the need for exogenous labels or markers, it simply benefits from the differential scattering of visible photons between biomaterials and inorganic NPs. Validation experiments conducted on fixed and living cells in real-time, as well as mouse tissue sections following parenteral administration of NPs. Additionally, by incorporating reporter fluorophores and utilizing both reflectance and fluorescence imaging modalities, the method enables high-resolution multiplex imaging of cellular structures and NPs. Different sizes and concentrations of Au NPs are tested as for Ag, Fe3O4, and CeO2 NPs, all with biological interest. Overall, the comprehensive study of NP imaging by confocal microscopy in reflectance mode provides valuable insights and tools for researchers interested in monitoring the nano-bio interactions.

Plasmonic Gold Nanostar-Based Probes with Distance-Dependent Plasmon-Enhanced Fluorescence for Ultrasensitive DNA Methyltransferase Assay

The ultrasensitive DNA methyltransferase (Dam MTase) assay is of high significance for biomedical research and clinical diagnosis because of its profound effect on gene regulation. However, detection sensitivity is still limited by shortcomings, including photobleaching and weak signal intensities of conventional fluorophores at low concentrations. Plasmonic nanostructures with ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and fluorescence enhancement capability that can overcome these intrinsic defects hold great potential for ultrasensitive bioanalysis. Herein, a silica-coated gold nanostars (Au NSTs@SiO2)-based plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF) probe with 20 "hot spots" was developed for ultrasensitive detection of Dam MTase. Here, the Dam Mtase assay was achieved by detecting the byproduct PPi of the rolling circle amplification reaction. It is worth noting that, benefiting from the excellent fluorescence enhancement capability of Au NSTs originating from their 20 "hot spots", the detection limit of Dam Mtase was reduced by nearly 105 times. Moreover, the proposed Au NST-based PEF probe enabled versatile evaluation of Dam MTase inhibitors as well as endogenous Dam MTase detection in GW5100 and JM110 Escherichia coli cell lysates, demonstrating its potential in biomedical analysis.

Plasmonic silver and gold nanoparticles: shape- and structure-modulated plasmonic functionality for point-of-caring sensing, bio-imaging and medical therapy

Silver and gold nanoparticles have found extensive biomedical applications due to their strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and intriguing plasmonic properties. This review article focuses on the correlation among particle geometry, plasmon properties and biomedical applications. It discusses how particle shape and size are tailored via controllable synthetic approaches, and how plasmonic properties are tuned by particle shape and size, which are embodied by nanospheres, nanorods, nanocubes, nanocages, nanostars and core-shell composites. This article summarizes the design strategies for the use of silver and gold nanoparticles in plasmon-enhanced fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), electroluminescence, and photoelectrochemistry. It especially discusses how to use plasmonic nanoparticles to construct optical probes including colorimetric, SERS and plasmonic fluorescence probes (labels/reporters). It also demonstrates the employment of Ag and Au nanoparticles in polymer- and paper-based microfluidic devices for point-of-care testing (POCT). In addition, this article highlights how to utilize plasmonic nanoparticles for in vitro and in vivo bio-imaging based on SERS, fluorescence, photoacoustic and dark-field models. Finally, this article shows perspectives in plasmon-enhanced photothermal and photodynamic therapy.

Spectroscopic Identification of Charge Transfer of Thiolated Molecules on Gold Nanoparticles via Gold Nanoclusters

Investigation of charge transfer needs analytical tools that could reveal this phenomenon, and enables understanding of its effect at the molecular level. Here, we show how the combination of using gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and different spectroscopic techniques could be employed to investigate the charge transfer of thiolated molecules on gold nanoparticles (AuNP@Mol). It was found that the charge transfer effect in the thiolated molecule could be affected by AuNCs, evidenced by the amplification of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal of the molecule and changes in fluorescence lifetime of AuNCs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that AuNCs could amplify the charge transfer process at the molecular level by pumping electrons to the surface of AuNPs. Finite element method (FEM) simulations also showed that the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism along with chemical enhancement determines the SERS improvement in the thiolated molecule. This study provides a mechanistic insight into the investigation of charge transfer at the molecular level between organic and inorganic compounds, which is of great importance in designing new nanocomposite systems. Additionally, this work demonstrates the potential of SERS as a powerful analytical tool that could be used in nanochemistry, material science, energy, and biomedical fields.

Construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities and their applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy

Plasmonic nanocavities exhibit exceptional capabilities in visualizing the internal structure of a single molecule at sub-nanometer resolution. Among these, an easily manufacturable nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavity is a successful and powerful platform for demonstrating various optical phenomena. Exciting advances in surface-enhanced spectroscopy using NPoM nanocavities have been developed and explored, including enhanced Raman, fluorescence, phosphorescence, upconversion, etc. This perspective emphasizes the construction of NPoM nanocavities and their applications in achieving higher enhancement capabilities or spatial resolution in dark-field scattering spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. We describe a systematic framework that elucidates how to meet the requirements for studying light-matter interactions through the creation of well-designed NPoM nanocavities. Additionally, it provides an outlook on the challenges, future development directions, and practical applications in the field of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

Surface-enhanced photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy of single molecule confined in coupled Au bowtie nanoantenna

Optical nanoantennas possess broad applications in the fields of photodetection, environmental science, biosensing and nonlinear optics, owing to their remarkable ability to enhance and confine the optical field at the nanoscale. In this article, we present a theoretical investigation of surface-enhanced photoluminescence spectroscopy for single molecules confined within novel Au bowtie nanoantenna, covering a wavelength range from the visible to near-infrared spectral regions. We employ the finite element method to quantitatively study the optical enhancement properties of the plasmonic field, quantum yield, Raman scattering and fluorescence. Additionally, we systematically examine the contribution of nonlocal dielectric response in the gap mode to the quantum yield, aiming to gain a better understanding of the fluorescence enhancement mechanism. Our results demonstrate that altering the configuration of the nanoantenna has a significant impact on plasmonic sensitivity. The nonlocal dielectric response plays a crucial role in reducing the quantum yield and corresponding fluorescence intensity when the gap distance is less than 3 nm. However, a substantial excitation field can effectively overcome fluorescence quenching and enhance the fluorescence intensity. By optimizing nanoantenna configuration, the maximum enhancement of surface-enhanced Raman can be turned to 9 and 10 magnitude orders in the visible and near-infrared regions, and 3 and 4 magnitude orders for fluorescence enhancement, respectively. The maximum spatial resolutions of 0.8 nm and 1.5 nm for Raman and fluorescence are also achieved, respectively. Our calculated results not only provide theoretical guidance for the design and application of new nanoantennas, but also contribute to expanding the range of surface-enhanced Raman and fluorescence technology from the visible to the near-infrared region.

Peeking into the Femtosecond Hot-Carrier Dynamics Reveals Unexpected Mechanisms in Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Plasmonic-driven photocatalysis may lead to reaction selectivity that cannot be otherwise achieved. A fundamental role is played by hot carriers, i.e., electrons and holes generated upon plasmonic decay within the metal nanostructure interacting with molecular species. Understanding the elusive microscopic mechanism behind such selectivity is a key step in the rational design of hot-carrier reactions. To accomplish that, we present state-of-the-art multiscale simulations, going beyond density functional theory, of hot-carrier injections for the rate-determining step of a photocatalytic reaction. We focus on carbon dioxide reduction, for which it was experimentally shown that the presence of a rhodium nanocube under illumination leads to the selective production of methane against carbon monoxide. We show that selectivity is due to a (predominantly) direct hole injection from rhodium to the reaction intermediate CHO. Unexpectedly, such an injection does not promote the selective reaction path by favoring proper bond breaking but rather by promoting bonding of the proper molecular fragment to the surface.

Review of Gold Nanoparticles in Surface Plasmon-Coupled Emission Technology: Effect of Shape, Hollow Nanostructures, Nano-Assembly, Metal-Dielectric and Heterometallic Nanohybrids

Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic platforms are globally employed in modern smart technologies to detect events or changes in the analyte concentration and provide qualitative and quantitative information in biosensing. Surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) technology has emerged as an effective POC diagnostic tool for developing robust biosensing frameworks. The simplicity, robustness and relevance of the technology has attracted researchers in physical, chemical and biological milieu on account of its unique attributes such as high specificity, sensitivity, low background noise, highly polarized, sharply directional, excellent spectral resolution capabilities. In the past decade, numerous nano-fabrication methods have been developed for augmenting the performance of the conventional SPCE technology. Among them the utility of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has enabled the demonstration of plethora of reliable biosensing platforms. Here, we review the nano-engineering and biosensing applications of AuNPs based on the shape, hollow morphology, metal-dielectric, nano-assembly and heterometallic nanohybrids under optical as well as biosensing competencies. The current review emphasizes the recent past and evaluates the latest advancements in the field to comprehend the futuristic scope and perspectives of exploiting Au nano-antennas for plasmonic hotspot generation in SPCE technology.

Advances in three dimensional metal enhanced fluorescence based biosensors using metal nanomaterial and nano-patterned surfaces

Metal enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is a phenomenon that increases fluorescence signal through placement of metal near a fluorophore. For biosensing applications, MEF-based biosensors are becoming increasingly popular as it enables highly sensitive detection of molecules, important for early diagnosis. The structure and size of the metal influence the optical properties through enhancing the fluorophore photostability and light absorption and emission. In recent years, many metal nanostructures have been fabricated and examined for their effectiveness in developing MEF-based biosensors. This review focuses on the latest applications of three-dimensional nanostructures and nano-patterned surfaces used to develop and improve fluorescence sensing via MEF. Current reviews mostly discussed the applications of two dimensional MEF and metal-nanoparticles-based MEF with a focus on fabrication of nanoparticles and metal substrates. In this article, we focused more on the effect of the metal nanostructure and size on MEF and then provided an in-depth summary of the performance of the state-of-the-art three dimensional MEF-based biosensors. While more work is needed to demonstrate applicability for complex samples, it is evident that with the use of metal nanoparticles and three dimensional nano-patterns, the assay sensitivity of fluorescence-based detection can be greatly improved, making it suitable for use in early disease diagnostics.

Luminescence-Based Infrared Thermal Sensors: Comprehensive Insights

Recent chronological breakthroughs in materials innovation, their fabrication, and structural designs for disparate applications have paved transformational ways to subversively digitalize infrared (IR) thermal imaging sensors from traditional to smart. The noninvasive IR thermal imaging sensors are at the cutting edge of developments, exploiting the abilities of nanomaterials to acquire arbitrary, targeted, and tunable responses suitable for integration with host materials and devices, intimately disintegrate variegated signals from the target onto depiction without any discomfort, eliminating motional artifacts and collects precise physiological and physiochemical information in natural contexts. Highlighting several typical examples from recent literature, this review article summarizes an accessible, critical, and authoritative summary of an emerging class of advancement in the modalities of nano and micro-scale materials and devices, their fabrication designs and applications in infrared thermal sensors. Introduction is begun covering the importance of IR sensors, followed by a survey on sensing capabilities of various nano and micro structural materials, their design architects, and then culminating an overview of their diverse application swaths. The review concludes with a stimulating frontier debate on the opportunities, difficulties, and future approaches in the vibrant sector of infrared thermal imaging sensors.

Surface-enhanced fluorescence for lipopolysaccharide analysis based on shell-isolated nanoparticle

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as the component of cell membrane on gram-negative bacteria played a central role on inflammatory inducer to stimulate a multi-system host response. Herein, a surface-enhanced fluorescent (SEF) sensor was developed for LPS analysis based on shell-isolated nanoparticles (SHINs). The fluorescent signal of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) was amplified by silica shell-coated Au nanoparticles (Au NPs). The 3D finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulation revealed that this enhancement was due to local electric field amplification. This method has a linear detection range of 0.1-20 μg/mL and a detection limit of 64 ng/mL for LPS. Furthermore, the developed method was successfully applied for LPS analysis in milk and human serum sample. The results indicated that the as-prepared sensor has significant potential for selective detection of LPS in biomedical diagnosis and food safety.

Probing Interactions between Chiral Plasmonic Nanoparticles and Biomolecules

Chiral plasmonic nanoparticles (and their assemblies) interact with biomolecules in a variety of different ways, resulting in distinct optical signatures when probed by circular dichroism spectroscopy. These systems show promise for biosensing applications and offer several advantages over achiral plasmonic systems. Arguably the most notable advantage is that chiral nanoparticles can differentiate between molecular enantiomers and can, therefore, act as sensors for enantiomeric purity. Furthermore, chiral nanoparticles can couple more effectively to chiral biomolecules in biological systems if they have a matching handedness, improving their effectiveness as biomedical agents. In this article, we review the different types of interactions that occur between chiral plasmonic nanoparticle systems and biomolecules, and discuss how circular dichroism spectroscopy can probe these interactions and inform how to optimize systems for biosensing and biomedical applications.

Role of probe design and bioassay configuration in surface enhanced Raman scattering based biosensors for miRNA detection

The accurate design of labelled oligo probes for the detection of miRNA biomarkers by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) may improve the exploitation of the plasmonic enhancement. This work, thus, critically investigates the role of probe labelling configuration on the performance of SERS-based bioassays for miRNA quantitation. To this aim, highly efficient SERS substrates based on Ag-decorated porous silicon/PDMS membranes are functionalized according to bioassays relying on a one-step or two-step hybridization of the target miRNA with DNA probes. Then, the detection configuration is varied to evaluate the impact of different Raman reporters and their labelling position along the oligo sequence on bioassay sensitivity. At high miRNA concentration (100-10 nM), a significantly increased SERS intensity is detected when the reporters are located closer to the plasmonic surface compared to farther probe labelling positions. Counterintuitively, a levelling-off of the SERS intensity from the different configurations is recorded at low miRNA concentration. Such effect is attributed to the increased relative contribution of Raman hot-spots to the whole SERS signal, in line with the electric near field distribution simulated for a simplified model of the Ag nanostructures. However, the beneficial effect of reducing the reporter-to-surface distance is partially retained for a two-step hybridization assay thanks to the less sterically hindered environment in which the second hybridization occurs. The study thus demonstrates an improvement of the detection limit of the two-step assay by tuning the probe labelling position, but sheds at the same time light on the multiple factors affecting the sensitivity of SERS-based bioassays.

Polydopamine-Based Nanoprobes Application in Optical Biosensing

Polydopamine (PDA), the synthetic counterpart of melanin, is a widely investigated bio-inspired material for its chemical and photophysical properties, and in the last few years, bio-application of PDA and PDA-based materials have had a dramatic increase. In this review, we described PDA application in optical biosensing, exploring its multiple roles as a nanomaterial. In optical sensing, PDA can not only be used for its intrinsic fluorescent and photoacoustic properties as a probe: in some cases, a sample optical signal can be derived by melanin generation in situ or it can be enhanced in another material thanks to PDA modification. The various possibilities of PDA use coupled with its biocompatibility will indeed widen even more its application in optical bioimaging.

Enhancement and quenching of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy of single molecule confined in metallic nanoparticle dimers

We present a theoretical analysis of plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF) and Raman scattering (PERS) spectroscopy of a single molecule confined in the laser-irradiated metallic nanoparticles (NPs) dimer, focusing on the origin of the spectral enhancement and quenching effects. The theoretical method ofD-parameters has been used to calculate the dimer distance-dependent nonlocal dielectric effect in Ag and Au NPs. Meanwhile, other damping rates and electric field enhancements are quantitatively computed by finite element method. Moreover, PEF and PERS spectra of rhodamine 6G are obtained within the density-functional theory. Our calculated results show that the PERS mainly depend on the excitation and emission field enhancements, and thus it occurs at the narrower dimer gap due to the stronger localized plasmon coupling. The PEF is related to fluorescence rate caused by the competition between excitation electric field and quantum efficiency, and the increase of former may enhance the fluorescence intensity while the lower latter lead to reduce the intensity as decreasing the dimer distance. The contribution of nonlocal dielectric effect can significantly reduce the quantum efficiency at smaller distance so that it overcomes the excitation field enhancement, leading to the fluorescence quenching for Au NPs dimer. Furthermore, by optimizing the dimer distance and NPs size, the maximum PERS and PEF cross sections reach 10-14and 10-15under 2.45 eV laser excitation for Ag NPs dimer, and 10-18for Au NPs. Our study finely explains the experiment results showed either fluorescence enhancement or quenching with the change of molecule-NPs distance, and better guidance for optimizing the experiments.

Bright and Stable Nanomaterials for Imaging and Sensing

This review covers strategies to prepare high-performance emissive polymer nanomaterials, combining very high brightness and photostability, to respond to the drive for better imaging quality and lower detection limits in fluorescence imaging and sensing applications. The more common approaches to obtaining high-brightness nanomaterials consist of designing polymer nanomaterials carrying a large number of fluorescent dyes, either by attaching the dyes to individual polymer chains or by encapsulating the dyes in nanoparticles. In both cases, the dyes can be covalently linked to the polymer during polymerization (by using monomers functionalized with fluorescent groups), or they can be incorporated post-synthesis, using polymers with reactive groups, or encapsulating the unmodified dyes. Silica nanoparticles in particular, obtained by the condensation polymerization of silicon alcoxides, provide highly crosslinked environments that protect the dyes from photodegradation and offer excellent chemical modification flexibility. An alternative and less explored strategy is to increase the brightness of each individual dye. This can be achieved by using nanostructures that couple dyes to plasmonic nanoparticles so that the plasmon resonance can act as an electromagnetic field concentrator to increase the dye excitation efficiency and/or interact with the dye to increase its emission quantum yield.

Tailoring Fluorescence-Phosphorescence Emission with a Single Nanocavity

Realizing the dual emission of fluorescence-phosphorescence in a single system is an extremely important topic in the fields of biological imaging, sensing, and information encryption. However, the phosphorescence process is usually in an inherently "dark state" at room temperature due to the involvement of spin-forbidden transition and the rapid non-radiative decay rate of the triplet state. In this work, we achieved luminescent harvesting of the dark phosphorescence processes by coupling singlet-triplet molecular emitters with a rationally designed plasmonic cavity. The achieved Purcell enhancement effect of over 1000-fold allows for overcoming the triplet forbidden transitions, enabling radiation enhancement with selectable emission wavelengths. Spectral results and theoretical simulations indicate that the fluorescence-phosphorescence peak position can be intelligently tailored in a broad range of wavelengths, from visible to near-infrared. Our study sheds new light on plasmonic tailoring of molecular emission behavior, which is crucial for advancing research on plasmon-tailored fluorescence-phosphorescence spectroscopy in optoelectronics and biomedicine.

Molecularly imprinted polymers-isolated AuNP-enhanced CdTe QD fluorescence sensor for selective and sensitive oxytetracycline detection in real water samples

A molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs)-isolated AuNP-enhanced fluorescence sensor, AuNP@MIPs-CdTe QDs, was developed for highly sensitive and selective detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) in aqueous medium. The developed sensor combined the advantages of strong fluorescence signal of metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF), high selectivity of MIPs, and stability of CdTe QDs. The MIPs shell with specific recognition served as an isolation layer to adjust the distance between AuNP and CdTe QDs to optimize the MEF system. The sensor demonstrated the detection limit as low as 5.22 nM (2.40 μg/L) for a concentration range of 0.1-3.0 μM OTC and good recovery rates of 96.0-103.0% in real water samples. In addition, high specificity recognition for OTC over its analogs was achieved with an imprinting factor of 6.10. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was utilized to simulate the polymerization process of MIPs and revealed H-bond formation as the mainly binding sites of APTES and OTC, and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis was employed to obtain the distribution of electromagnetic field (EM) for AuNP@MIPs-CdTe QDs. The experimental results combined with theoretical analyses not only provided a novel MIP-isolated MEF sensor with excellent detection performance for OTC but also established a theoretical basis for the development of a new generation of sensors.

Hot-Electron Dynamics Mediated Medical Diagnosis and Therapy

Surface plasmon resonance excitation significantly enhances the absorption of light and increases the generation of "hot" electrons, i.e., conducting electrons that are raised from their steady states to excited states. These excited electrons rapidly decay and equilibrate via radiative and nonradiative damping over several hundred femtoseconds. During the hot-electron dynamics, from their generation to the ultimate nonradiative decay, the electromagnetic field enhancement, hot electron density increase, and local heating effect are sequentially induced. Over the past decade, these physical phenomena have attracted considerable attention in the biomedical field, e.g., the rapid and accurate identification of biomolecules, precise synthesis and release of drugs, and elimination of tumors. This review highlights the recent developments in the application of hot-electron dynamics in medical diagnosis and therapy, particularly fully integrated device techniques with good application prospects. In addition, we discuss the latest experimental and theoretical studies of underlying mechanisms. From a practical standpoint, the pioneering modeling analyses and quantitative measurements in the extreme near field are summarized to illustrate the quantification of hot-electron dynamics. Finally, the prospects and remaining challenges associated with biomedical engineering based on hot-electron dynamics are presented.

Optical Binding-Driven Micropatterning and Photosculpting with Silver Nanorods

Controlling the nano- and micropatterning of metal structures is an important requirement for various technological applications in photonics and biosensing. This work presents a method for controllably creating silver micropatterns by laser-induced photosculpting. Photosculpting is driven by plasmonic interactions between pulsed laser radiation and silver nanorods (AgNRs) in aqueous suspension; this process leads to optical binding forces transporting the AgNRs in the surroundings, while electronic thermalization results in photooxidation, melting, and ripening of the AgNRs into well-defined 3D structures. This work call these structures Airy castles due to their structural similarity with a diffraction-limited Airy disk. The photosculpted Airy castles contain emissive Ag nanoclusters, allowing for the visualization and examination of the aggregation process using luminescence microscopy. This work comprehensively examines the factors that define the photosculpting process, namely, the concentration and shape of the AgNRs, as well as the energy, power, and repetition rate of the laser. Finally, this work investigates the potential applications by measuring the metal-enhanced luminescence of a europium-based luminophore using Airy castles.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Photonic Noble-Metal Nanomaterials

Colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are composed of metal cores and organic or inorganic ligand shells. These NPs support size- and shape-dependent plasmonic resonances. They can be assembled from dispersions into artificial metamolecules which have collective plasmonic resonances originating from coupled bright and dark optical electric and magnetic modes that form depending on the size and shape of the constituent NPs and their number, arrangement, and interparticle distance. NPs can also be assembled into extended 2D and 3D metamaterials that are glassy thin films or ordered thin films or crystals, also known as superlattices and supercrystals. The metamaterials have tunable optical properties that depend on the size, shape, and composition of the NPs, and on the number of NP layers and their interparticle distance. Interestingly, strong light-matter interactions in superlattices form plasmon polaritons. Tunable interparticle distances allow designer materials with dielectric functions tailorable from that characteristic of an insulator to that of a metal, and serve as strong optical absorbers or scatterers, respectively. In combination with lithography techniques, these extended assemblies can be patterned to create subwavelength NP superstructures and form large-area 2D and 3D metamaterials that manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of transmitted or reflected light.

Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence for ellagic acid detection based on surface structure of gold nanoparticles

Ellagic acid (EA), as a natural polyphenolic acid, is considered a naturally occurring inhibitor of carcinogenesis. Herein, we developed a plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF) probe for EA detection based on silica-coated gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). A silica shell was designed to control the distance between silica quantum dots (Si QDs) and Au NPs. The experimental results indicated that an 8.8-fold fluorescence enhancement was obtained compared with the original Si QDs. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulations further demonstrated that the local electric field enhancement around Au NPs led to the fluorescence enhancement. In addition, the fluorescent sensor was applied for the sensitive detection of EA with a detection limit of 0.14 μM. It can be used to detect EA in pomegranate rind with a recovery rate of 100.26-107.93%. It can also be applied to the analysis of other substances by changing the identification substances. These experimental results indicated that the probe provides a good option for clinical analysis and food safety.

Plasmonic Bound States in the Continuum to Tailor Exciton Emission of MoTe2

Plasmon resonances can greatly enhance light-matter interactions of two-dimensional van der Waals materials. However, the quality factor of plasmonic resonances is limited. Here, we demonstrate a plasmonic quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC), which is composed of gold nanorod pairs. Through controlling the rotation angle of the nanorods, the quality factor of the plasmonic BIC mode can be tuned. Simulation results show that the plasmonic BIC combines the advantages of high-quality factor from the BIC effect and small mode volume from plasmonic resonance. Experiment results show that the designed plasmonic BIC mode exhibits a quality factor higher than 15 at the wavelength of around 1250 nm. Through integrating the plasmonic bound state structure with monolayer molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe₂), the exciton emission of MoTe₂ in the PL spectrum split into two exciton-polariton modes, which is attributed to the high Q factor and strong interaction between the BIC mode and excitons of MoTe₂.

Smartphone-Based Attomolar Cyanide Ion Sensing Using Au-Graphene Oxide Cryosoret Nanoassembly and Benzoxazolium-Based Fluorophore in a Surface Plasmon-Coupled Enhanced Fluorescence Interface

Photoplasmonic platforms are being demonstrated as excellent means for bridging nanochemistry and biosensing approaches at advanced interfaces, thereby augmenting the sensitivity and quantification of the desired analytes. Although resonantly coupled electromagnetic waves at the surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) interface are investigated with myriad nanomaterials in order to boost the detection limits, rhodamine moieties are ubiquitously used as SPCE reporter molecules in spite of their well-known limitations. In order to overcome this constraint, in this work, a benzoxazolium-based fluorescent molecule, (E)-2-(4-(dimethylamino)styryl)-3-methylbenzo[d]oxazol-3-ium iodide (DSBO), was synthesized to selectively detect the cyanide (CN^-) ions in water samples. To this end, the sensitivity of the fabricated SPCE substrates is tested in spacer, cavity, and extended cavity nanointerfaces to rationalize the configurational robustness. The performance of the sensor is further improved with the careful engineering of gold (Au)-graphene oxide (GO) cryosoret nanoassemblies fabricated via an adiabatic cooling technology. The unique dequenching (turn-on) of the quenched (turn-off) fluorescent signal is demonstrated with the hybridized metal-π plasmon synergistic coupling in the nanovoids and nanocavities assisting delocalized Bragg and localized Mie plasmons. The spectro-plasmonic analysis yielded highly directional, polarized (>95%), and enhanced emission attributes with an attomolar limit of detection of 10 aM of CN^- ions with high linearity (R² = 0.996) and excellent reliability, in addition to an exceptional correlation with the theoretically obtained TFclac simulations. The CN^- ion sensing is experimentally validated with the smartphone-based cost-effective SPCE detection technology to render the device amenable to resource-limited settings. We believe that the unique fluorophore-cryosoret nanoassemblage presented here encourages development of frugal, unconventional, and highly desirable strategies for the selective quantitation of environmentally and physiologically relevant analytes at trace concentrations for use in point-of-care diagnostics.

Spiropyran-Based Soft Substrate with SPR, Anti-Reflection and Anti-NRET for Enhanced Visualization/Fluorescence Dual Response to Metal Ions

The photoluminescence of modified spiropyran on solid surfaces is poor, and the fluorescence intensity of its MC form is weak, which affects its application in the field of sensing. In this work, a PMMA layer containing Au nanoparticles and a spiropyran monomolecular layer are coated on the surface of a PDMS substrate with inverted micro-pyramids successively by means of interface assembly and soft lithography, and the overall structure is similar to insect compound eyes. The anti-reflection effect of the bioinspired structure, the SPR (surface plasmon resonance) effect of the Au nanoparticles and the anti-NRET (non-radiation energy transfer) effect of the PMMA isolation layer raise the fluorescence enhancement factor of the composite substrate vs. the surface MC form of spiropyran to 5.06. In the process of metal ion detection, the composite substrate can achieve both colorimetric and fluorescence response, and the detection limit for Zn²⁺ can reach 0.281 μM. However, at the same time, the lack of the ability to recognize specific metal ions is expected to be further improved by the modification of spiropyran.

Plasmonic-Enhanced Bright Single Spin Defects in Silicon Carbide Membranes

Optically addressable spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have emerged as attractable platforms for various quantum technologies. However, the low photon count rate significantly limits their applications. We strongly enhanced the brightness by 7 times and spin-control strength by 14 times of single divacancy defects in 4H-SiC membranes using a surface plasmon generated by gold film coplanar waveguides. The mechanism of the plasmonic-enhanced effect is further studied by tuning the distance between single defects and the surface of the gold film. A three-energy-level model is used to determine the corresponding transition rates consistent with the enhanced brightness of single defects. Lifetime measurements also verified the coupling between defects and surface plasmons. Our scheme is low-cost, without complicated microfabrication and delicate structures, which is applicable for other spin defects in different materials. This work would promote developing spin-defect-based quantum applications in mature SiC materials.

Light-Triggered Reversible Tuning of Second-Harmonic Generation in a Photoactive Plasmonic Molecular Nanocavity

The ultrasmall mode volume and ultralarge local field enhancement of compact plasmonic nanocavities have been widely explored to amplify a variety of optical phenomena at the nanoscale. Other than passively generating near-field enhancements, dynamic tuning of their intensity and associated nonlinear optical processes such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) play vital roles in the field of active nanophotonics. Here we apply a host-guest molecular complex to construct a photoswitchable molecule-sandwiched metallic particle-on-film nanocavity (MPoFN) and demonstrate both light-controlled linear and nonlinear optical tuning. Under alternating illumination of ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, the photoactive plasmonic molecular nanocavity shows reversible switching of both surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and plasmon resonance. Surprisingly, we observe more significant modulation of SHG from this photoactive MPoFN, which can be explained qualitatively by the quantum conductivity theory (QCT). Our study could pave the way for developing miniaturized integrated optical circuits for ultrafast all-optical information processing and communication.

Photonic Crystal Enhanced Fluorescence: A Review on Design Strategies and Applications

Nanoscale fluorescence emitters are efficient for measuring biomolecular interactions, but their utility for applications requiring single-unit observations is constrained by the need for large numerical aperture objectives, fluorescence intermittency, and poor photon collection efficiency resulting from omnidirectional emission. Photonic crystal (PC) structures hold promise to address the aforementioned challenges in fluorescence enhancement. In this review, we provide a broad overview of PCs by explaining their structures, design strategies, fabrication techniques, and sensing principles. Furthermore, we discuss recent applications of PC-enhanced fluorescence-based biosensors incorporated with emerging technologies, including nucleic acids sensing, protein detection, and steroid monitoring. Finally, we discuss current challenges associated with PC-enhanced fluorescence and provide an outlook for fluorescence enhancement with photonic-plasmonics coupling and their promise for point-of-care biosensing as well monitoring analytes of biological and environmental relevance. The review presents the transdisciplinary applications of PCs in the broad arena of fluorescence spectroscopy with broad applications in photo-plasmonics, life science research, materials chemistry, cancer diagnostics, and internet of things.

Nickel-Laden Dendritic Plasmonic Colloidosomes of Black Gold: Forced Plasmon Mediated Photocatalytic CO2 Hydrogenation

In this work, we have designed and synthesized nickel-laden dendritic plasmonic colloidosomes of Au (black gold-Ni). The photocatalytic CO₂ hydrogenation activities of black gold-Ni increased dramatically to the extent that measurable photoactivity was only observed with the black gold-Ni catalyst, with a very high photocatalytic CO production rate (2464 ± 40 mmol g_Ni^-1 h^-1) and 95% selectivity. Notably, the reaction was carried out in a flow reactor at low temperature and atmospheric pressure without external heating. The catalyst was stable for at least 100 h. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy studies indicated indirect hot-electron transfer from the black gold to Ni in less than 100 fs, corroborated by a reduction in Au-plasmon electron-phonon lifetime and a bleach signal associated with Ni d-band filling. Photocatalytic reaction rates on excited black gold-Ni showed a superlinear power law dependence on the light intensity, with a power law exponent of 5.6, while photocatalytic quantum efficiencies increased with an increase in light intensity and reaction temperature, which indicated the hot-electron-mediated mechanism. The kinetic isotope effect (KIE) in light (1.91) was higher than that in the dark (∼1), which further indicated the electron-driven plasmonic CO₂ hydrogenation. Black gold-Ni catalyzed CO₂ hydrogenation in the presence of an electron-accepting molecule, methyl-p-benzoquinone, reduced the CO production rate, asserting the hot-electron-mediated mechanism. Operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that CO₂ hydrogenation took place by a direct dissociation path via linearly bonded Ni-CO intermediates. The outstanding catalytic performance of black gold-Ni may provide a way to develop plasmonic catalysts for CO₂ reduction and other catalytic processes using black gold.

Plasmon enhanced fluorescence from meticulously positioned gold nanoparticles, deposited by ultra sonic spray coating on organic light emitting diodes

Enhancement of the spontaneous emission of fluorophores aided by plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) prompts the growth of plasmonic organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Together with the spatial dependence of the fluorophore and PNPs on enhanced fluorescence, the surface coverage of the PNPs controls the charge transport in OLEDs. Hence, here, the spatial and surface coverage reliance of plasmonic gold nanoparticles is controlled by a roll-to-roll compatible ultrasonic spray coating technique. A 2-fold enhancement in the multi photon fluorescence is seen by two-photon fluorescence microscopy for a polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) stabilized gold nanoparticle located 10 nm away from the super yellow fluorophore. Fluorescence enhancement combined with ∼2% surface coverage of PNPs, provides a 33%, 20% and ∼40% increase in the electroluminescence, luminous efficacy and external quantum efficiency, respectively.

Plasmon-Enhanced Fluorescence of Single Quantum Dots Immobilized in Optically Coupled Aluminum Nanoholes

Fluorescence-based optical sensing techniques have continually been explored for single-molecule detection targeting myriad biomedical applications. Improving signal-to-noise ratio remains a prioritized effort to enable unambiguous detection at single-molecule level. Here, we report a systematic simulation-assisted optimization of plasmon-enhanced fluorescence of single quantum dots based on nanohole arrays in ultrathin aluminum films. The simulation is first calibrated by referring to the measured transmittance in nanohole arrays and subsequently used for guiding their design. With an optimized combination of nanohole diameter and depth, the variation of the square of simulated average volumetric electric field enhancement agrees excellently with that of experimental photoluminescence enhancement over a large range of nanohole periods. A maximum 5-fold photoluminescence enhancement is statistically achieved experimentally for the single quantum dots immobilized at the bottom of simulation-optimized nanoholes in comparison to those cast-deposited on bare glass substrate. Hence, boosting photoluminescence with optimized nanohole arrays holds promises for single-fluorophore-based biosensing.

Recent advances in plasmon-enhanced luminescence for biosensing and bioimaging

Plasmon-enhanced luminescence (PEL) is a unique photophysical phenomenon in which the interaction between luminescent moieties and metal nanostructures results in a marked luminescence enhancement. PEL offers several advantages and has been extensively used to design robust biosensing platforms for luminescence-based detection and diagnostics applications, as well as for the development of many efficient bioimaging platforms, enabling high-contrast non-invasive real-time optical imaging of biological tissues, cells, and organelles with high spatial and temporal resolution. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of various PEL-based biosensors and bioimaging platforms for diverse biological and biomedical applications. Specifically, we comprehensively assessed rationally designed PEL-based biosensors that can efficiently detect biomarkers (proteins and nucleic acids) in point-of-care tests, highlighting significant improvements in the sensing performance upon the integration of PEL. In addition to discussing the merits and demerits of recently developed PEL-based biosensors on substrates or in solutions, we include a brief discussion on integrating PEL-based biosensing platforms into microfluidic devices as a promising multi-responsive detection method. The review also presents comprehensive details about the recent advances in the development of various PEL-based multi-functional (passive targeting, active targeting, and stimuli-responsive) bioimaging probes, highlighting the scope of future improvements in devising robust PEL-based nanosystems to achieve more effective diagnostic and therapeutic insights by enabling imaging-guided therapy.
