Abstract
A bioinspired design built around a neutral flavin-triphenylamine core has been investigated for selective mitochondrial bioimaging capabilities in different microenvironments. Significant advantages with respect to long-term tracking, faster internalization, penetrability within the spheroid structures, and strong emission signal under induced hypoxia conditions have been observed, which could offer an alternative to the existing mitotrackers for hypoxia-related biological events.

Abstract
Fifteen push-pull dyes comprising the tetracyclic polyaromatic pyrene have been designed and synthesized. The optical properties of the fifteen dyes have been examined in twenty-two solvents of different polarities. Surprisingly, contrarily to what is classically observed for push-pull dyes of D-π-A structures, a negative solvatochromism could be found for numerous dyes. The photoluminescence and thermal properties of the dyes were also examined. Theoretical calculations were carried out to support the experimental results.

Abstract
Flavins are central to countless enzymes but display different reactivities depending on their environments. This is understood to reflect modulation of the flavin electronic structure. To understand changes in orbital natures, energies, and correlation over the ring system, we begin by comparing seven flavin variants differing at C8, exploiting their different electronic spectra to validate quantum chemical calculations. Ground state calculations replicate a Hammett trend and reveal the significance of the flavin π-system. Comparison of higher-level theories establishes CC2 and ACD(2) as methods of choice for characterization of electronic transitions. Charge transfer character and electron correlation prove responsive to the identity of the substituent at C8. Indeed, bond length alternation analysis demonstrates extensive conjugation and delocalization from the C8 position throughout the ring system. Moreover, we succeed in replicating a particularly challenging UV/Vis spectrum by implementing hybrid QM/MM in explicit solvents. Our calculations reveal that the presence of nonbonding lone pairs correlates with the change in the UV/Vis spectrum observed when the 8-methyl is replaced by NH2, OH, or SH. Thus, our computations offer routes to understanding the spectra of flavins with different modifications. This is a first step toward understanding how the same is accomplished by different binding environments.

Abstract
Surface acid site regulation of photocatalysts is a promising strategy to improve their performance. Herein, surface acid sites of cadmium sulfide were rationally regulated by cerium doping, which resulted in significantly increased photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation. The generated Brønsted acid sites were verified to favor the adsorption of organic molecules because of their strong affinity. Meanwhile, Lewis acid sites acted as the active sites for C-C bond cleavage via a nucleophilic substitution process, which was testified by the Fukui function and electrostatic potential. Besides, Ce3+ doping suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, which also boosted the performance of TC-HCl degradation. Moreover, the degradation pathway of TC-HCl was deduced based on theoretical calculations and HPLC-MS results. The toxicity of pollutants and intermediates was also evaluated. This work provided new insight into the rational design and preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental purification.

Abstract
Lumichrome (7,8-dimethylalloxazine, LC) is a natural photodegradation product and catabolite of flavin coenzymes. Although not a coenzyme itself, LC is used for biosignaling in plants and single-celled organisms, including quorum sensing in the formation of biofilms. The noninvasive detection of in vivo lumichrome would be useful for monitoring this signaling event. For molecules that undergo significant charge redistribution upon light excitation (e.g., intramolecular charge transfer), there are optical detection methods (e.g., second-harmonic generation) that would be well suited to this task. Here, we have used Stark spectroscopy to measure the extent and direction of charge redistribution in photoexcited LC. Stark and low-temperature absorption spectra were obtained at 77 K on LC in ethanol glasses and analyzed using the Liptay analysis to obtain the difference dipole moments and polarizabilities. These data were complemented by a computational analysis of the excited states using density functional theory (DFT) at the TD-B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level of theory.

Abstract
A series of novel soluble nature-inspired flavin derivatives substituted with short butyl and bulky ethyl-adamantyl alkyl groups was prepared via simple and straightforward synthetic approach with moderate to good yields. The comprehensive characterization of the materials, to assess their application potential, has demonstrated that the modification of the conjugated flavin core enables delicate tuning of the absorption and emission properties, optical bandgap, frontier molecular orbital energies, melting points, and thermal stability. Moreover, the thin films prepared thereof exhibit smooth and homogeneous morphology with generally high stability over time.

Abstract
Flavins are a diverse set of compounds with a wide variety of biological and nonbiological applications. Applications of flavins receiving attention recently consist of electro- and photocatalytic oxidation of substrates for organic synthesis, bioengineered nanotechnology, and water splitting catalysts, among others. While there is vast knowledge regarding the structure-property relationships of flavins and their electrochemistry, there is much less work elucidating the structure property relationships as they pertain to flavinium photochemistry. Herein, we report the effect of molecular tailoring on the molecular properties of N(5)-ethyl-flavinium cation (Et-Fl+), a derivative of the biocatalytic coenzyme riboflavin, by incorporating electron withdrawing and donating groups at the C7 and C8 position of the isoalloxazine ring. The presence of electron withdrawing groups at the C8 position caused a red shift in the absorption spectrum, while the electron donating groups caused a blue shift. Functionalization at the C7 position had the opposite effect on the absorption spectrum. The effects of single substitution were relatively negated with simultaneous functionalization at both the C8 and C7 positions. Difference density plots indicate no change in the nature of the S1 excited state, which was confirmed by optimization of the excited state geometries. The results presented in this study indicate that functionalization of the isoalloxazine unit affects the photophysical properties of N(5)-ethyl-flavinium cations.

Abstract
The search for advanced optical materials, in particular, materials with nonlinear optical responses, has, in the last years, experienced substantial growth due to their vast applications in the photonics field. One of those applications is ultra-fast optical frequency conversion, in the optics communications field. Organic compounds have emerged as promising candidates for raw materials to develop nonlinear optical devices, such as optical converters, due to their intrinsic ultra-fast electronic responses. Also, the easy tailoring of organic molecular structures makes organic materials much more appealing than the inorganic ones. In this work, we have performed a linear and nonlinear optical characterization of a set of dibenzylideneacetone derivatives. The nonlinear optical responses investigated correspond to second- and third-order nonlinear processes, namely, first electronic molecular hyperpolarizability and two-photon absorption cross-section, respectively. The value of the first electronic molecular hyperpolarizability, up to 52 cm4·statvolt−1, could be considered a robust value when compared to the short-sized π-electron backbone length of the studied compounds. Such results suggest that these compounds exhibit the potential to be used as optical frequency converters. Quantum chemical calculations were used to predict the theoretical value of the first molecular hyperpolarizability, as well as to simulate the one- and two-photon absorption spectra for all compounds.

Abstract
A series of push-pull heterocyclic N,N-diphenylhydrazones were prepared to study the effect of structural modifications (different π-spacers and electron-withdrawing groups) on the optical (linear and nonlinear) and electronic properties of the molecules. The photovoltaic response of dye-sensitized solar cells assembled using nanocrystalline titania photosensitized with the synthesized dyes was also studied. These heterocyclic push-pull conjugated dyes involve N,N-diphenylhydrazones as electron donors linked to bithiophene or thieno[3,2-b]thiophene spacers and were functionalized with carboxylic acid, cyanoacetic acid, or dicyanovinyl acceptor groups. A combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, Vilsmeier formylation, and condensation reactions was used to synthesize the intermediates and final products. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-DFT calculations were used to obtain information on conformation, electronic structure, and electron distribution, both for the free dyes and those adsorbed on TiO2. The results of this multidisciplinary study indicate that dyes 5b and 6b have the strongest second-order nonlinear optical response with hyperpolarizability values in the range of β = 2330 × 10-30 to 2750 × 10-30 esu, whereas photovoltaic power conversion efficiencies reach values in the range of 0.7-3.0% for dyes 5a-b and 7c and were enhanced by coadsorbing deoxycholic acid (0.8-5.1%).

Abstract
A series of dipyrrolopyrazine (DPP) based chromophores featuring thiophene and varied donor (N,N-dimethylamine, NH2, OMe) and acceptor (CF3, CN, NO2) appendages have been synthesized. The structures and properties of the chromophores were investigated by absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates a planar geometry for the molecule 7g. Surface morphological studies reveal the formation of microrods and nanorods. The acidochromic behavior of the chromophore which shows a prominent red-shift in the absorption spectra owing to the protonation of the pyrazine segment provides a valuable opportunity to assess the sensory response. Acid dependent spectral changes could be successfully applied to detect pH in biological fluids and acid impurities in solvents. A series of dipyrrolopyrazine (DPP) based chromophores featuring thiophene and varied donor (N,N-dimethylamine, NH2, OMe) and acceptor (CF3, CN, NO2) appendages have been synthesized.![]()
